hey, it's me! i'm still alive, somehow, though just barely. this semester has been pretty tough so far and will probably remain that way until spring. despite this, i managed to add some fun new features. : ) ALSO i promise 100000% that if you sent me an ask i WILL answer it. i will. anyway, look at all those cool things! -> a system for cuts, bruises, tattoos, wounds and other decorations your whumpee's skin is an empty canvas. whether you fill it with scars and wounds or cutesy band aids is up to you!
the way this is set up is kind of like a bunch of stickers. so for example, if you decide to hurt the lil' guy with something sharp, he'll get a "stab wound" sticker in the spot you decided to target. over time, that sticker will change over to a "stab scar" one. it's a very flexible way to do things, but it still needs some work and a couple big changes, since it's very unfriendly to low-end computers. in terms of visuals though, it should look exactly the same as the decal-based "decorations" for your whumpee that you see above!
- a better way of getting that dude on camera the camera system is now a lot more immersive and will fit the story. the awkward developer cam that could clip into walls is no more.
you can drag around the view and zoom in and out by scrolling. as you progress, you'll get access to even more ways to invade your whumpee's privacy. : )
-> new ways to get horny in the last devlog post (around 1000 years ago) i said that you won't see any "horny accessories" in the upcoming updates. that was a complete lie, sorry! here's a preview of some cool new horns you can give to your whumpee.
the neat part is that the horns are customizable - other than just choosing the shape, you can modify their size and color gradient. -> other stuff + story i've made plenty of changes and additions to the back end. most of it is not flashy or super significant - most of the time and energy i could dedicate to the project went right into fueling the violent, bloody conflict between me and custom shader code. i've also made some updates to how time is simulated and fixed a bunch of bugs. there is now a sound system too! i'll look for some copyright-free sfx and music before the next update. oh, and there's some lore too!
i've been experimenting with different ways of delivering the main storyline. heavily stylized cutscene-like sequences were very fun to do! not sure if i'll stick with this style though. either way, i have the general outline of something that resembles a plot. >: ) that's it for now! again, sorry for the irregular update schedule. i've been following the "no progress for a long time, then one night you have all the energy and inspiration in the world and you zone the fuck out for an unhealthy amount of time just working on your thing then until realize that you're going to be asleep within the next 40 seconds" development strategy - hopefully, my brain will kindly allow me to switch to a more comfortable workflow. :' ) taglist below: (let me know if you want to be added OR LET ME KNOW IF I FORGOT TO ADD YOU IM SO SORRY) @whumpinthepot @andithewhumper @pigeonwhumps @monarchthefirst @scp-1296 @whumpedydump @screenys-whump-corner @whumpshaped @bloodsweatandpotato @burning-and-remembering @thealmightyconeoftruth @whimpity-whumpity @catnykit @vietbluecoeur @rainythealias @cardboardarsonist @snakebites-and-ink @lthrboy @woo-lu-woo @wingsofadragonsstuff @wecoffphm @bayvel @pics-and-fanfics @dokidokisadness @generic-whumperz @lambetjenasus @aarika-merrill @hayaneakabane @moons-cozy-corner @brittaunfiltered09 @rule-masochism @reverie1234 @oddsconvert @wh-wh-whumpified @currentlyinthesprial @cupcakes-and-pain @heavenlyden @whumpsday @likeadeadbattery @stay-on-topic1 @cyborg0109 @kawhump @astrowhump

đ cynosure status update
i mean. it's also periphery update too though. teehee. feel free to also check out the drawing here!
đ¤ New to the story? Check out the (current) wip intros: Cynosure / Periphery
omg it's been a while, hasn't it? haha. i must admit i might have gotten A Bit too deep into some university assignments (+ my thesis). I do sometimes talk about the story on my main, too, but it's nothing that important for the story itself, mostly just some fun facts about the characters, which means that most of the development I've done is in my brain. Or is nonexistent or something. ANYWAY! Here's a status update to tell what has been happening lately! Might actually make this into something I post every now and then.
In this status update I'm going to talk a little about how it's going with the story, overall thoughts, plot/character changes and some things you can expect during next few weeks (hopefully). I'll put it all under the cut to keep this short on the dashboard đĽ°
Like always, if you have any questions about the story, feel free to send an ask - I'll always be happy to answer đ¤
overall thoughts
Right now one of my top thoughts is honestly debating whether i want to, like, actually write this somewhere as a nove, or whether I should do it as a graphic novel or something. That said, if I do go with the latter, you can still expect writing bc I like to write things out to plan them. Or vise versa make some kind of sketches for writing. My brain works in a weird way, I know lol
I have been doing some worldbuilding (specifically for the story AND something for the overall story world that I have). Let me know if you'd love to hear some things I have thought about!
I've also been doing some research about *checks notes* Boston, MA. Because that's where most of the story happens :^) Though it happens in 2200's so I still have lots of room to change things around.
Definitely thinking about adding more dark/horror stuff in the world as a whole bc there's been, like, a climate crisis. AND people do interplanetary traveling. Stuff like that ought to lead to some fucked up stuff. Especially when there's megacorporations involved. Cynosure wise there's going to be something, especially in Periphery, happening to one of the main characters. đ
plot/character updates
(that have happened lately, at least)
One of the pov characters kind of got a name update! Tobias's first name has been changed to Ripley, and it's what most characters will probably referring to it as. That said, some characters (+ itself) will refer to it as Tobias bc that's its preferred name that's somethings its friends and wife call it
Another pov character (Samuel) got an interesting change of backstory, some tweaks in personality, and its plot-revelant actions have changed a little. Sammy's changes has thus made some already existing things I've posted on here non-canon.
Slowly finally putting together what I mah want to have in Klara's chapters and it's sooooo exciting.
Polished some things about the plots, especially the different parts of the acts <3
Got more thoughts about the project itself (or, well, what it should have). That also means I need to look more into pharma research or something. Very interesting...
Overall, lots to think about and lots to research about.
things to expect in next few weeks
(that is, if I won't drown in university assignments or something)
I've had some ideas for little stories that would be happening before the story, to show more information about the characters and the story itself (like what happened in the original project). Or maybe just some fun parts of characters' backstories. So I may post something if I manage to write it!
Some more character introductions + pov character post. Might make a "tag yourself" meme. Or a powerpoint wip intro
Something else, maybe? If you have an idea, let me know!
taglist (interact with this post if you want to be added or removed!)

I was reading the most recent chapter of In endless mist and rain, and I reread the tags for possible updates, but so far Weilanxie doesn't appear listed as a relationship, just its three side/inner ships. Avid fan here, I'll continue following the fic regardless of how the ships form or break up, but out of curiosity: does the lack of the Weilanxie tag indicate that there won't be a polyamorous relationship between them? Because despite the most recent events, I don't think this configures a love triangle in any way and the fic doesn't have the tag either. Can you talk a little about what to expect from the ships?
Even though the answer doesn't contain explicit spoilers, some parts are plot revelations in some way, so long text under the cut.
This is actually a very complicated question. Does this fic have polyamorous relationship? Off screen, if you count V shaped Xiao Hua/Hei Xiazi/Zhang Qiling, yet itâs only hinted that Xiao Hua is part of this relationship somehow/more than a friend, than yes - off screen because Xiao Hua doesnât appear in any scene along with Xiazi and Xiaoge so far and as both Xiazi and Xiaoge are my characters, Iâm not planning on having any scene like that, so itâs more a âtheir relationship may or may not be polyamorous/probably is platonicâ - is left for the readerâs taste and interpretation. Why am I including them in the answer of an ask about Weilanxie? Because Idk if having or not polyamory in a fic in general is the issue here or not.
We do have one(1) main character that is, in fact, polyamorous (the label never appears on screen, but the identity is there). One of them is not, like, definitely. We (me and @tazzy-ace) noticed a while ago that this character has the opposite feelings of a polyamorous person, yet he circumstantially finds himself in a very different mindset of a standard (western) monogamous person. I treasure the way I build my characters and Iâm not willing to change him, so maybe heâll end up being the the impeding factor of actual polyamorous relationship happening (or being the endgame here). We donât have A THING outlined, we write out of vibes, this is how we made this fic work, so we donât really know the ending of this. We have the goal of bringing a happy ending, and considering that this is a romantic story in the first place, a happy ending includes at least one ship staying together - will this happen? Maybe not, maybe the best ending for them will be to stay all apart (Eh, probably this wonât be the ending skjjsskj this is me being dramatic, but itâd be more likely to happen than the 3 of them ending in a polyamorous relationship). But what about a V shaped one? Not impossible, Iâd say, exactly because the characters and the vibes both me and Deputy Chief have when writing new content for this fic is what decides the plot. So I donât believe weâll have the Weilanxie and the Happy Ending tags until the day we write the last chapter for real to know.
About the Love Triangle - elements of traditional love triangles such as rivalry, unrequited love and jealousy are not present in the story, we could say that no, itâs not a suitable tag/label. But in the sense that one of the characters will be somehow romantically involved with the two other ones for a while - which doesn't exactly constitute cheating, but I can't explain further without giving spoilers - so yes, somehow you could say that a love triangle exists.Â
What to expect from the ships? Each one, you mean? Everything gets much worse before it gets any better, with all of them. With some, things get much worse more than once - weâre working hard to provide more Angst than we already had in this 125k posted.
Weilan and Shenxie share the place under the spotlight when it comes to âscreentimeâ and relationship development (or ruining relationship too kjssjjk). We didnât make any of the relationships simple and if you thought that romance between one of the Guardian mains + any grave robber from DMBJ is already unlikely to happen/hard to develop with them being their canon selves, for canon reasons, believe me, we made it even harder. You can expect pain and smut. More pain than smut, Iâm sorry. (Yet this fic is rated E and properly tagged about its sexual content, thereâs not even one sex scene that happens for the sake of smut in itself, all sex is contextual and meaningful, no matter how horny it is, we put extra efforts in the emotional part of this).
Polyamory to be depicted as realistic, is a delicate thing, and as I said above, one of our main characters is not polyamorous, one of them is (and the third one ehh I wonât reveal rn), so you can expect to see both sides of it: someone comfortable about how he feels and how he sees his (supposed/potential) relationships, as well as someone whoâs confused, trying his best, but in the end, really uncomfortable about the possibilities. No side/identity is portrayed as being better than the other, or as being more correct than the other. But the âpolyamory is the solution for love trianglesâ is definitely not what we want here. Because polyamory canât be forced, being polyamorous is NOT a decision (if youâre queer, you know what I mean). At the same time weâll have the picture of a polyamorous person being happy in a monogamous relationship (or with only one partner, if you prefer), weâll have someone that doesnât have as lifegoal a romantic relationship (except if itâs WITH ONE VERY SPECIFIC PERSON). Could he be read as aro? No. (But you can read him like that, if you want). His lack of romantic interest in general is part of his upbringing, the part of his culture that his life is based upon, and some more circumstances, but itâs not an identity. Could he be read as ace? A bit, but not really. Same explanation about the aro identity. We had long discussions about how these labels are useful HERE, but they wouldnât be the case depending on a personâs culture and upbringing.
So yeah, this character that is not polyamorous wonât be labeled as this or that, heâs just himself, thatâs all. Iâll leave to the readers to see what they want to see there in him (and please, donât try to push on me - an ace and married person - this harmful idea that aro and/or ace people canât/shouldnât be in a romantic/sexual relationship).
All that said, this fic is not about polyamory, like some of my other fics and several of Tazzy's other fics. That's not part of the central themes, it's the identity of one of the main characters and may or may not influence (for better or worse) their relationships in the future.
#ask game#on polyamory#on identity#on nuanced relationships#also on why not when it's a popular solution in fanfic#this ended up being about a lot of things#fanfiction#guardian#dmbj#shipping#hyde dual-domination

remembering all the insanely long marauders fics ive brainrotted over because i kinda forgot all of them. roughly in the order i read them.
Whatever happened to the young, young lovers?
355k, jegulus wolfstar rosekiller. post war (ended by regulus) where they just hang around grimmauld place all day. i literally cant remember anything that happened. but i liked how they stayed home and didnt go outside, because i relate to that. it was alternating chapters between post war and pre war, honestly i dont even know it was just so much relationship angst and regulus being incredibly competent and hurt.
All The Young Dudes
526k, the character development and buildup, its like the level of the actual series without the annual voldemort attack. i was DESTROYED by the ending, it lived in my brain rent free for like a week. why did it have to be canon compliant???! the way they spent so much time pining, so much time apart, and so little time together. but that theyre literal soulmates, which is so sad for grant (he suffered true emotional damage) lmfao. I guess this is the basis (canon??) of marauders era
we can be heroes, for ever and ever
102k alternate happy ending to atyd - yes PLEASE this is what i needed to heal the pain after reading atyd.
choices
624k. lowkey feel the same way towards this as atyd, except it didnt live in my brain rent free for a week. in that i respect that it's good and got heartbroken when everyone died and they didn't get their happy ending, but it did get me into jegulus so I'm not complaining. IDK it's just sad, but i love regulus and evan and cerci. even though i deadass can't remember anything else.
crimson rivers
865k actually SOBBING this fic is everything. so much plot and so much hurt, it is amazing and painful and intense. it has the most picturesque scenes, beautiful happy ending. but i did kinda get sick of it near the end cos its so fuckin long, and i was not into the girls in the fic so i was kinda cbs
holding onto the self
76k and it was so good i felt so sad for sirius. this is the type of fic which makes me jaw drop and suck in breath like poor baby honestly. no summary needed cos ill never forget what its about lmfao....
just lovers
321k fake dating au. this is GREAT. its so light hearted which is a great change from the akckdjebakzj. this is the climb to the top for regulus being my favourite character. lowkey can't remember shit but i liked it and i need more fics like it because it was creative and there's not much room for that in marauders verse
only the brave
645k and The fic of my dreams. this is everything and i loved every second of it. every character is so great, and it got me into pandalily!!! perfect amount of hurt (a lot), and such good plot. it has every ship i like, i was like drowning in a hot spring of happiness while reading this
ecliptic
147k, oh it's so creative and new. it was so suspenseful cos we got 0 answers, and the fic is deadass incomplete wtf!! i love how everyone is sad but mostly rational. the jegulus was really really nice, and i liked how the cruciatus was made out to be a big deal so the hurt/comfort is better. i feel like the plot is better than the delivery
wolfstar my one true pair, jegulus my second true pair, evanÂŽulus has a special place in my heart, marauders fanfiction a permanent space in my mind for at least the next few weeks
new edit: shit! i forgot to update and i read so many more long fics and can barely remember them now
mastermind
311k i cant even remember anything that happened ... except i liked the dynamic between narcissa and regulus, and narcissa is so damn pretty. this was the one where regulus made james and sirius go with him to the cave, and then james had to force him to drink the potion, so much angst arghhhh.
all along there was some invisible string (tying you to me)
103k spiderman AU + high school and all i can say that its an original setting... the pining was great, and the spiderman kiss!! but other than that like it was good, i guess
I adored you madly, extravagantly, absurdly
243k Victorian AU with arranged marriage trans regulus. I loved regulus' character, he was so spiteful and petty but also down bad, and jegulus matched so perfectly together. i want his life so bad because his literal job was being married, like deadass he didnt do shit all day except read, play with his cats and pine for his husband...
a violent kind of spin
212k not going to lie, my favourite/most striking parts of this fic were the $h scenes... and i just finished it last night so I dont even have an excuse. james asking sirius to turn around and not even waiting for him to do it??? oml hes unhinged and it was so well written. the bathtub scene when he was on a timer and then just walked out like everything was fine!!! help it was so angsty im in love. i feel like i speedran this fic and didnt read it properly, which is probably accurate
Im not gonna teach him how to dance with you
122k. rosekiller is the BEST. i love the whole plot tbh and it was so well paced. love that for evan because nobody else is gonna keep by with barty's crazy. i would have liked it more if it had crack undertones but yknow whatever, cant have everything. i thoroughly enjoyed all the romantic tension in the leadup, the way they were both so in love im gone.
All the young dudes - Sirius' Perspective
628k, let me tell you, canon has no right being that sad, and the beloved author just fed off that like a parasite. i should have expected how this fanfic would destroy me, but the delivery made it so much more painful. i sobbed reading the Halloween and Azkaban chapters. and sirius,,, like why did you have to be so angry all the time. and so obsessed with remus from day 1. it was great. although like halfway through i just felt like ... wolfstar is so basic. jegulus once jegulus forever i guess.
whatever our souls are made of
157k hanahaki where we really gotta work for the happy ending. OML it was so beautifully sad. reggie đđ. sirius said nobody on the earth deserves his baby brother, but if he had to pick someone, it would be James đđ I'm a broken man
oml i havent updated in 2 months... its ok i didnt read that much cos i was too tired with uni and work. anyway i found all my fics through tiktok, tumblr, or thru the author cos this gold mine is too big sorry chief. which is like. someone recommended this following fic :skull:
I'm not okay (I solemnly swear)
107k and unfinished :000 cant believe it i read something unfinished but when i read the tags i was like ok yeah im in. my secret is that i read fics like these!!! and most of them are not well written but this one is. and so was that other one about sirius but it was only like 78k so i didnt write it up. anyway poor reggie is going through it, and idk if its ever getting finished cos the poor author might be going through it too. additional note: idk if this is the one but bestie has so many problems like get help fr.
the veil of secrecy
100k but its unfinished and let me tell nobody i was devastated. omg it was so sad so the summary is after reggie defected voldymouldy found out and like --- got all his remaining horcruxes and stuffed them inside his chest and abdominal cavity in some crazy ass surgery. and then he sewed his mouth shut and broke his fingers and kept him around him like some porcelain doll/pet and thats the punishment????? oml how do u think of that... anyway so he dissociates into his fabric walls of occlumency so voldy doesnt know where the locket is. ok whatever they escape and he falls in love with jamie idk. its unfinished.
to the boy who...
238k its similar to the previous one (written by the same author ibbsterkisster) and i found it to read to cope with the first one not being finished. yes this is like 3x as long sighs we all know how it is. anyway its similar except reggie is like his boy toy instead... which is even worse. anyway i cant remember anything about the jegulus but i DO remember that evan was so sweet (as he is) he like stroked the bruise on reggies wrist very gently  and that scene lives rent free in my brain.
blood on my shirt, heart in my hand
22k and id just like to say, this is the kind of horror that i like. its kinda a mystery at first but its not so creepy, and the jegulus endgame is stronger than a bulletproof vest. so james is having dreams which are vaguely murderous, and when he wakes up the events like kinda match up. turns out hes like having some repetitive dissociative episode every night at 12.37am and getting up to murder people. and after the first time reggie was just like 'well if ur in then im in too' and straight up helps him murder people ?!? i loved it. murder husbands.
the long game
250k and this is the most unique fic youll get here. modern high school au where reggie is like this god genius talented painter and they work on a musical set together, and reggie gets an art show and idk why this stood out to me but he drew like a green soft and a purple cushion and was like... this represents me and evan, cos were ok separately but great together. i read this so long ago i cant even remember what i thought of it
jealousy, jealousy
85k + unfinished again!! anyway so bartylus fake date so james and evan can get jealous and then they both end up together. i just remember it was so cute because they would just hug each other like constantly all the time, and cry at the smallest inconvenience, then their friend/boyfriend would go and lie with them in bed and hug them and that was like a very significant portion of it. and im not even complaining this is the type of physical affection they deserve
pathological people pleaser
114k but it passed so fast?!?! james is so fuckin unstable man like get a therapist. ok i actually enjoyed this so much because for some reason i was really into horror (it was literally 2 days ago) and this wasnt horror but they did not reveal like why james was so fucked, and which parts of his narration were unreliable until quite a bit in. also there was more than a month gap between me bookmarking this one and the last one and like i dont even know what i did with myself??? (actually i lied i read more fanfiction i just forgot i did cos i forgot to bookmark it) (summary: summer holiday where starchaser fall in love also effie died in a car crash on the way to james after he called and was like mom im gonna kms. ok but it was really well written and full of suspense)
anti-hero
237k and i just finished it so its fresh in my mind (for once) ok now that i think about it i have no idea why regulus lived that first time... maybe i didnt read closely enough but like when fics are that long i kinda just miss some stuff or forget it and they all blur together anyway. ok so firstly i want a story of james and regulus in this universe when they were still at hogwarts because like having a secret relationship for 2 years and also doing drugs.. just the hurt comfort ahhh maybe without all the hurt and yelling but whatever. cant have it all. anyway this was so well written i always like narcissa tbh. glad james and regulus sorted out their shit eventually even though it took so. fucking. long. anyway yikes (summary: reggie lives after the cave and they go horcrux hunting and kill voldy but then reggie fucks off to america and becomes a drug addict again but comes back, and james has anger issues but only when it comes to regulus anyway they kept hurting each other that i didnt even feel sad anymore when it happened) addition: oml reggie being an addict + nic in beautiful boy the stars aligned finally i get some visual scenes in this fandom
doing a word count sum of the above and its: 6 million and 476 thousand...
meetings that start in the dark
656k and oml i was SEMI HOOKED. honestly like why did it take them so fucking long to get back together like the moment Voldemort dropped dead James should have been unable to stay away from regulus. anyway love how they're obsessed with each other, love how Luna and Harry are playing matchmaker. and i especially love how Sirius was the lame embarrassing parent ahah. also the amount of bs evan has to put up with from reg and barty... jesus christ i loved them in this except for how he was buff girl no evan is a twink and this fic wont change my mind
sometimes, running away does solve all your problems
15k so reggie literally walks out of his house and his parents dont even notice and he runs away and meets james and they live together it was perfect omfg i loved it so so so much. it had the same sad, resigned tone as the dsmp fics that i was obsessed with before and would reread over and over. and the small village quiet life is a dream
27 club
27k and why was it so heavy oml like i didn't sign up for this sadness. ok so reggie is DEAD but before that he and James were like lovers and drug buddies but also lacked healthy communication. james is like bye imma get clean without u, the literal love of my life. the whole thing was so sad because it would be like one bit of 'oh and they were in love and making music' and then another bit of 'james was mourning so hard he couldnt get out of bed'. it was lowkey magical to read except for how hes dead.
you missed my heart
100k and omfg im in shock tbh. like what the actual fuck. I'm in shock in an "im unsettled and creeped out" way. i don't even know why because ive read serial killer jegulus fics before and it was all peachy, but maybe this one was so creepy because we were in the dark, and the killing isn't unrealistic and romanticised. James was so smitten with regulus too I'm crying i was actually convinced that reggie wasn't the killer. i need soft regulus fluff to cope with this. to erase the image of reggie being a psychopath. omg Sirius after finding out the truth.. poor boy was like catatonic. I'm never reading unhappy ending fics again I've become weak my heart can't take it
I'm going to start including the shorter fanfics that i read and are memorable as well because i don't discriminate
which means i have a lot of catching up to do
the moment and the sound
29k so james runs away with harry to escape voldemort and meets reggie by chance. they live together and james is like straight up depressed. i liked this fic but also forgot what it was like.
raise hell
30k it's basically about them being angels and demons and working together to idk stop the world from ending. i liked the tone of the fic in that everyone was like set in their ways and was like wtf at everyone else but also i wish it was longer and there was more about each person's like representation like Sirius being the angel of justice. also it was so funny regulus the angel of diligence and James the demon of lust.
blackpool
63k and omg it was so well written but i was so confused the whole time cos i have no literary ability. like regulus being a straight up unreliable narrator?!?! deadass in shock half the time reading this tbh
calm before the storm
51k and i could draw a graph of the shock factor of this fic and it would look like a staircase with 3 steps. at the start it was so happy and cute and i was like omg why did i click on this again and then sirius dies and james loses his memory and reggie is like fucked up that's the first step up and then they heal whatever but then reggie straight up starts murdering people and making a show out of it i read it all like đłđł. unhinged fr, and also everyone tried to kts at least once like besties go see a therapist please
pink lemonade
121k band tour au where they sing (i think mostly) arctic monkeys songs and kudos because the lyrics all fit so well to whatever clown ass miscommunication situation jegulus have going on. it was relationship angst and maybe i would have enjoyed it more if i read it earlier but rn i need action and thrill. i was like to my irl friend like miscommunication angst isn't enough for me anymore i need murder and she was like girl wtf.
youngblood

An Apology, Reflection, Staying true to yourself, and Some News: Updates on 'The Girl in IT' and 'My Wife in IT'
Hey Guys.
I owe you all a huge apology. It's been a rough ride lately, and I want to take a moment to explain what's been going on. I think it's important to have this conversation, even if it scares the shit out of me. So, before I dive in, I want to say sorry in advance for what I'm about to share.
Firstly, I want to say sorry for my absence. Back in February, I got hit with a nasty virus right when 'The Girl in IT' was really taking off. Seeing the story gain traction was incredible, but it also came with its own set of challenges. Suddenly, I was getting hundreds of notes instead of the usual handful, and it was overwhelming, to say the least.
At the end of the day, I'm just like anyone else â human. I write because it's a passion of mine, but I also want to create something that resonates with all of you. However, in the pursuit of trying to make everyone happy, it's easy to lose sight of your own vision. That's exactly what happened with 'The Girl in IT'. I got so caught up in trying to cater to my self-created expectations that I lost touch with what I originally wanted Sugar's journey to be. Adapting to all the changes I've made from the original story became a real challenge for me, and I just... felt so lost.
Then came the burnout. After being sick, I hit a wall. I just couldn't find the energy or motivation to write, no matter how hard I tried. Burnout is real, guys, and it's something I wouldn't wish on anyone.
The turning point in all of this coincided with a major plot development in 'The Girl in IT'. Originally, my intention was to shed light on PCOS and its painful realities. However, in my eagerness to please what I thought everyone wanted and to avoid delving too deeply into darker themes, I ended up complicating matters for myself.
Enter 'My Wife in IT'. I had a clear timeline in mind for Joel and Sugar's relationship progression, but the unexpected turn of events forced me to rethink my plans. This had a ripple effect on 'My Wife in IT', leaving me facing a significant roadblock. I started to hate everything I attempted to write for Wife, and it didn't feel right to post something I wasn't 100% okay with.
I really want to take the time to emphasize that this is no one's fault but my own.
But here's the thing â I'm not giving up. I'm taking this as a learning experience and using it to grow as a writer and as a person. Which brings me to the big news...
I've decided to go back and rework the last few chapters of 'The Girl in IT' to align with my original vision. Think of it as 'The Girl in IT: Christine's Version'. But don't worry â we'll still get our happy ending. And once that's done, I'll be diving headfirst into 'My Wife in IT'.
I want to take a moment to apologize for any disappointment or frustration this may have caused. Looking back, I realize that I lost sight of staying true to myself and the story I wanted to tell. I got caught up in the numbers and metrics, instead of focusing on what truly mattered â telling a story that resonated with me and hopefully with you, too.
I want to express how incredibly thankful I am for all the love and support you've shown Joel and Sugar. Your encouragement has been like a beacon of light, guiding me through this journey. But you know, sometimes life throws us curveballs, and I've realized that I owe it to Joel and Sugar, and to all of you, to stay true to the story I set out to tell from the very beginning.
I'm truly sorry for any bumps in the road or delays that may have caused frustration. Your understanding means the world to me. Thanks for being there, for listening, and for being a part of this adventure with me. Hopefully, you'll love what I have planned for Joel and Sugar... for real, this time.

Made Marion Development Update, October 2023
Robin Beta and Early Access Cometh!
Happy spooky month, everyone!
Our excellent news for the month is that we are on-track to release Robin's route in early November as targeted!
Are you ready to storm the castle?
As of today, I have 1.5 scenes left to code in Chapter 3 (by far the longest chapter). I'll have the chapter 4s ready by the weekend of the 28th, when I'll start the full Robin beta. Â I'll give the beta at least two weekends (especially since the first is Halloween weekend), so as long as Steam certification goes well I will be releasing Early Access before November 15.
Anybody who has pre-ordered Made Marion will be able to download and play their copy when Early Access releases. I will announce an exact release date once our beta client is ready and we're certified for Steam (I wish to release on Steam and Itch at the same time). I will extend our special pre-order pricing for a couple weeks after Early Access is available as thanks for everyone's patience.
This Early Access release will contain Robin's route only, but it is Robin's complete route. Once it is released, there will be no major plot changes (only minor edits if anybody finds bugs or typos that were missed in beta). The only additions in the future will be some minor cut-ins and a few secondary character plot sprites that are currently silhouettes (there will still likely be some silhouette characters in the final version, but some characters who play a very minor role in Robin's route have major roles in other routes and will receive sprites). I am confident that the first release of Robin's route will be fully enjoyable to early players, with the complete story and all major graphics, sound, and all CGs included!
Robin is ready for romance, are you?

One year since Fateheart
A year ago I posted Fateheart: A Starless Seaquel to Ao3 (link here) - the mammoth fanfic sequel to Erin Morgenstern's The Starless Sea.
Fateheart has had an incredible year, and has completely changed my life, by all measures. Posting it has connected me to so many wonderful people and helped bring together a genuine community over on the Starless Sea discord (which you should join hey here's a link) who have supported me through the last hellish few weeks of uni assignments as well as months and months of creative projects and ambitious fic writing.
So on this blessed solstice day, here is a lil update for those who are following the slow progress of the unofficial Starless Sea canon as developed in Fateheart.
Oh that's right, baby. It ain't just one fan sequel. It's gonna be uhhh (checks notes) at least four.
I really really wanted to get the next book out at this year mark - on the solstice and year anniversary - but despite hitting that 50k mark for NaNoWriMo last month it just didn't happen (it's been a rough couple months - I am currently doing a master's course that is kicking my ass).
But I am determined to get Fever Pitch, the next full-novel-length follow-up story, out in full as soon as humanly possible. Toward that end I have gone ahead and made a posting for it. The first few chapters are done and have been done for a while, so I shall slowly be posting them as I work on the rest.
Watch this space!!!!
I never really intended Fever Pitch to be a fully-fledged sequel. Mind you, I didn't intend that with Fateheart either, but in a different way. In my mind the next book in the sequence is and always has been a story called The Lotus Flowers. Nearly 180k words of that one exist, but it is too important a story not to get right. So I'm gonna give it as much time as it needs - and it may need quite a lot.
But in working on Lotus Flowers, I came to realise that a lot of the world-building and character development which I was taking for granted was in fact not as obvious to the reader as it would be to me - LF is, after all, set ten or so years after Fateheart, and considering all of The Starless Sea (at least for Zachary and Dorian) takes place in about two weeks, ten years is space enough for a LOT of story.
So in order to strengthen my sense of where Zachary, Dorian, and Kat have found themselves by the ten year mark, I started noting down some of the more important moments from that decade of time. And then just kept writing. And writing and writing and writing until a handful of them were fully fledged novellas.
I have put up the polished ones - they are collected together on Ao3 as 'Fateheart: The Extended Canon'. Which is. A bit pretentious. But whatever. (Also I'm not kidding myself that all the fics in this collection are vital plot points, but there are a couple standout ones which are Canon Events in my mind, that will be referenced in later full-length fics. Namely A Heart That Won't Break, Death in the Valley, and The Man Named Sky.)
But one of these short (aspirationally) stories seemed as I wrote to have particular space in it for so much of that world-building and exposition, and that was Fever Pitch.
Fever Pitch takes place five years after the birth of the Harbour, and the events of Fateheart, and is an Alice-in-Wonderland themed story which explores the lives of all the main Fateheart characters (Zachary, Dorian, Kat, and Leander, namely), introduces some new players (shoutout Tabuzae and Kirsty Baudeville), as well as establishing the limits and life of the Harbour they live in.
I'd say a solid sixty percent of this story currently exists, and I'm gonna amp up the pressure on myself to complete it by posting it as I go - something I've never done before, so bear with me.
It means so much to me that there are people out here who care as much about these people and this little world on the Starless Sea as I do - even more so that so many people have loved my offerings of more story. The above photo is of my christmas present from a housemate who was one of Fateheart's earliest readers. It's so beautiful it makes my heart leap.
We rise, we fall - as stories do.
I am committed to seeing this story through, by the way - all the way to the end - and that is gonna take years. But we start here - with the next book in the series. First few chapters to appear over Christmas.
Until then, happy solstice. To seeking x

Development Sidequest: The Mystery Game Jam
Back in February, I planned out my next several months to help stay on track for Amadeus: A Riddle for Thee ~ Episode 1 ~Waltz to release this Fall. I had a good chunk of work planned for April:
Mechanics - prototype + implement all "Must-Have" new mechanics for the full game
Background Art - finish 1-2 new backgrounds (to avoid screwing up my wrists again drawing all of them at the last minute) (also because I learned that how I draw the backgrounds impacts how I write the scenes)
Sprite Art - finish 1-2 new sprites
Music - fully flesh out a placeholder track for 1-2 BGM pieces
Narrative - write first draft of all scenes through a certain point in the game (naturally these scenes will change when it comes time to implement, that's just how this goes)
Marketing - prepare + announce 100 Wishlists celebration; make + publish press kit
Which is a lot, but doable if I'm working at it consistently. I'm only working part-time, and Amadeus is my "real" job, so to speak. Right?
Wellllllllll...... there's this little thing called the Mystery Game Jam.
Suffice it to say that I did not accomplish all of the above, but I DID write an entire mystery game. More below. Stay updated here: linktr.ee/amadeusgame
I heard about the jam, and thought back to my previous devlog where I discussed at length how doing other random projects when I was "supposed" to be working on Amadeus has been so valuable for me. I also felt that it would be wise to get more mystery writing experience doing something low-stakes and small-scope, to pull away from this single massive project for a bit and just work on the craft of writing. It would help me learn more about my own process. Also, it would be fun!
So I got a group of people together and gave myself the role of writing our game. I've had a ton of help brainstorming, solving plot issues, and generally improving things thanks to my teammates; the whole process has been collaborative (which is what makes game jams fun). However, I've been responsible for actually writing all of it.
As a result Amadeus had to get put on the backburner, because it turns out that brainstorming + outlining + coordinating + finalizing + writing-with-full-implementation-directions, a complete mystery story- that doesn't have a thousand plotholes- in a month, is a ton of work. Fun work! But a lot of it. As a result, what I actually accomplished from my April to-do list for Amadeus is closer to...
Prototyped "save/load" mechanic
Implemented mechanic that can create pauses mid-text-appearance for dramatic effect
Researched and sketched 1 new point-and-click background
Have sketches for 2 BGM pieces (but both need to be more fleshed out to be usable as placeholders)
Outlined draft of narrative for 1 new scene in the intro (but needs a lot more detail/workshopping)
Planned 100 Wishlists celebration (but didn't get everything ready to announce)
Made draft + format of press kit
Which is, honestly, still a decent chunk! I'll have to do some work readjusting next month's to-do list to account for the fact I'm a little behind, but it's reassuring to see that even in a month where most of my energy was dedicated to a side project, I still got a lot done.
This is where the portion of the devlog directly relevant to the game Amadeus: A Riddle for Thee draws to a close. That 100 wishlists celebration announcement will be coming next month, along with a separate announcement. Lots of news coming in May!
As always, all relevant links here: https://linktr.ee/amadeusgame - I will also add our Mystery Jam game here for a bit when it comes out, so you all have something new to play! Check back after May 5, 10PM Pacific!
For the remainder of this log, I want to discuss the process of writing our Mystery Jam game. I have learned so much from it and it's been an incredibly rewarding (if, at times, difficult) process. Collaborations are such a completely different beast from solo projects.
Mystery Game Jam Retrospective
It's a bit strange to write a retrospective when the game jam isn't actually over yet, but my role is mostly finished and I've handed it off to our implementation guy who is hard at work. You're doing great, S1x. Keep it up!
I've done a ton of game jams in the past, but they were always weekend-long jams and I was always just doing audio for them. I've never done a month-long jam before, and I've never taken on a primary role that wasn't as a musician. This was a lot of firsts for me.
I truly believe that game jams don't teach you as much about game development as they teach you about project management. To actually finish a game, so many things have to happen that are all interdependent, and you have to figure out what to do first and who to talk to at what stage so it all somehow comes together on a super-strict deadline. This interdependency is even more apparent for mystery games, where it's fully expected that the player will be paying attention to clues all across text, visuals, and interface. You can't give a completely finalized asset list to artists until you know exactly what every aspect of your mystery will be, otherwise you'll end up forcing your icon artist to re-draw the same asset a bunch of times to match the tweaks you made to the story.
So the biggest obstacle in making this game was that we didn't reach the "details of mystery are completely finalized" stage until over halfway through the month, mostly because I kept putting it off (I'd overwhelmed myself by giving myself all this and also Amadeus homework). We also had to coordinate across time zones and work schedules which introduced additional delays. We got to that point eventually though! Notably, once I had figured out some important things...
This is a collaboration. I was trying to do too much big braining on my own at times when what I really needed to do was schedule a voice call with teammates and bounce ideas. Talking things out with our background artist in particular helped a lot with getting past some hurdles that were really not working.
I am not a writer who can design a mystery puzzle in a vacuum and then add characters as set dressing on top. Once I realized I was stuck, I decided to just start writing out the prologue scene to get a feel for the characters and setting; this forced me to create unique characters who had a reason to be there, and those reasons gave me ideas for the mystery. It turns out that designing a puzzle is a lot like solving a puzzle: if one angle isn't working, take a break and try another angle. You'll learn more about the puzzle, how it works, and eventually all that knowledge will come together and you'll figure it out.
This is a game jam game. This is (probably) not going to be anyone's magnum opus. This is going to be a very fun silly knockoff Ace Attorney game with a robot detective. I'm generally good at keeping a chill attitude for weekend-long game jams, but because we had a month I was taking it way too seriously at first.
Most importantly... it's not reasonable to write an entire new mystery from start to end in a month while also doing a ton of work on Amadeus and working part-time. So I eventually told myself it was OK to ignore everything else except work and the game jam for a while, and focus on this.
(...I also spent about 20 hours obsessively working on my Very Spoilery Ghost Trick ROMhack when I was overwhelmed, as a sort of escape. It was obvious that my brain was refusing to work on the game jam so I just let it do what it wanted for a few days. Sometimes the ADHD wins.)
Reaching that key point-- the point where all of the details were finalized and everyone knew exactly what needed to get done-- was a huge milestone. But even after that, I still had to actually write the words for all of it. Writing in the sense of "mapping out the major plot beats and details of the mystery," and writing in the sense of "actually writing, line-by-line, the text of the game along with implementation instructions" are completely different skillsets. I already knew this from my experience working on Amadeus, but I had to re-learn it here.
Fortunately, by the time I was sitting down writing words, our musician had written some total bangers for the game and I was able to listen to those to really set the tone for what I was writing. If a certain dialogue box cues the "totally-not-objection" theme, then the energy for those next few dialogue entries should be VERY high energy. Listening to that theme while writing made sure it matched! And once our player character artist had designed the MC, I was able to find that character's "voice" much more easily to match the energy of that character. The work of other teammates helped inspire me to do my own work, and have more fun doing it.
I really like doing these collaborations because it's fun to make something completely different than what I would make alone. I also like collaborating because there are certain changes I'm forced to make to my workflow in order to make life easier for my teammates. It forces me to be more organized. I have to do more pre-planning so I'm not forcing artists to revise their work 20 times, and so the implementation engineer only has to implement once with a few exceptions, and can easily swap out placeholder assets when those come in. Thinking ahead like this is a really good habit to get into in general! Even as a solo dev if I learn to make my own life easier in this way I will save myself the headache.
Will I learn that lesson? Most definitely not. But hopefully I'll take something away from this. For example, the awesome beautiful spreadsheet I made to format my scripts for implementation:
(I'm still not the easiest person to work with, though. I'm kind of bossy. While I do try to at least not be every artist's worst nightmare, it's definitely in everyone's best interest that my big major long-term project is a solo work.)
I'm excited to see how it all comes together in the very end. I'm excited to see what people think of it. Where, on the spectrum of "too obvious" to "moon logic," am I landing on average? Just how weird is the pacing of reveals? These are questions that a non-game-jam game would be able to answer in a playtesting/beta phase, but this is a game jam game, so you get what you get. Making it has been really fun. Look forward to it when it comes out! It will be posted by S1xplus, our implementation engineer. It should end up on my itch page as well.
Look out for ROBOT DETECTIVE: THE CASE OF THE AUTOMURDERATED INTERN (working title)!!

ok so let's talk about Enif!
my girl: i love her to death and think about her quite a lot! so much so that she's in my head at all times. her (general) storyline is pretty much the same one i've had since the start of her creation BUT !!! I've been racking my brain trying to make sure there are little to no plot holes. and on that quest I've made the decision to make changes. some very little and other very very consequential. here's a little list! I'll make sure to explain in detail in Enif's wiki page in a future update.
name change: Enif Bane. for the sake of the story I want for Enif, she can't go by Enif Cordero. Her birth name Laura Cordero has to be revealed later on. along with her name, there'll be changes on some key aspects, like how she became Liz's daughter and how much Enif knows about the truth (the cult, her training, and her biological family).
she is left handed. this is a small and rather irrelevant detail but I have to integrate it because I hadn't thought of it until I made a mistake while drawing her lmao.
No tattoos, no scars. again, for the sake of the story, Enif's character will be slightly tamed down. the tattoos and scars were direct consequences of her nocturnal training sessions with Liz and the cult, but I want Enif to be painfully average on surface level, so yeah. no traces on her body.
special abilities: Enif still knows how to defend herself, but she's far from a powerful fighter, physically speaking. Liz wanted her to know the basics of self defense and made sure Enif would know her way with knives and blades (for ceremonies and stuff), but I really wanted to nerf her in this aspect because I want her to have one special ability developed above any other: voice changing. in summary, Liz wanted Enif to be skilled at manipulating (much like herself) but she went even further. she made sure Enif would learn how to control her voice and tone with expertise. thanks to this, Enif essentially knows how to mimic other people's voices. I know it sounds like fantasy but at this point I'm appealing to the show's canon nonsense lmao so yeah she can do that !
Enif doesn't learn the truth. initially, I wanted Enif to confront Liz and force her to confess to all her doings, including killing Enif's parents. in this new version, Enif doesn't confront Liz and doesn't learn the truth. she could eventually (I have an idea involving Charles), but I think it's much more tragic if Enif never finds out that her parents died because of Liz. it adds another layer to how much her perception of reality has been manipulated by Liz. it also adds some realism because life's like that: there are so many things we don't know and we die without ever learning.
other stuff: for Enif's storyline, there's some things post canon that have to happen. for one, General Crozier starts working with Dethklok (I've seen people pitch this idea and I love it. credit is not mine, however). second, Charles goes on to keep working with the Church of the Black Klok. and third, Dethklok is still going strong as a band, they are self managed, and they keep the same dynamic of the show essentially, but of course with added development. some other minor things, like the klokateers still being a thing (let's just say aotd didn't kill all of them, plus new people came to sign up after the great reuniting).
that's pretty much it, for now. after all, these things caught my attention because i've been writing down Enif's story in some brief chapters! and i gotta make the pieces align as good as possible. see ya!

Progress Report - October 2024
Hello, everyone! Hope youâre all doing well. Happy first progress report, and Happy Halloween!!!
Iâve never done one of these before, so bear with me as I try to figure it out.
Very nice news to share: in the past month, Iâve gotten a lot of preliminary planning done, to the point that I have a complete first draft of the outline of Sonicâs story! Of course, thereâs still quite a bit I have to do; things will definitely be changed as I get to work on Shadow and Silverâs stories, but itâs a huge chunk of planning that I didnât expect to be done this quickly. I also made a lot of progress on planning a side story Iâm developingâŚbut I fear Iâll say too much if I elaborate. Lastly, Iâm working on - you guessed it - planning what designs I might want to change, and how I want to change them.
Anyways, I wanted to answer some questions some of you might have.
Q&A
How much of the game will you be rewriting?
Iâm actually rewriting a lot less than I thought I would be (but still quite a lot). Iâm trying to take the base concepts/structure of what was in the original game and make sense of it. Not everything will make the cut, but Iâm trying to stay as close to the original vision of the game as possible with a little bit of my headcanons sprinkled in. Think of it a bit like the Resident Evil remakes; the broad strokes are (mostly) the same, but specific details differ.
How many stories will it have?
Four: Sonicâs, Shadowâs, Silverâs, and Final, same as the original.
What inspired this?
Iâve seen a couple people rewrite Sonic â06 over the years (mainly Story Surgery and Garrulous64), and Iâve wanted to try to do it myself for a while. The fact that Mephiles showed up again in Sonic x Shadow Generations (and there is some SHIT to unpack there) was the final kick I needed to start. Thereâs also, of course, the Snapcube dub. Expect at least one reference.
Will it be playable?
Sort of. It wonât be playable like the original (Iâm nowhere NEAR able to program an entire game by myself, and I donât want the gameplay to be Sonic â06 Two: Electric Boogaloo), but I will be describing my vision for if this game was actually playable as it goes along. Instead of traditional Sonic gameplay, Iâll be presenting the story in the form of a visual novel.
What engine are you using?
RenâPy! Itâs a free, Python-based engine made specifically for visual novels thatâs really easy to learn and use! Itâs actually the engine that Doki Doki Literature Club was made in; if that doesnât speak for how versatile RenâPy is, I donât know what does.
Are you doing this all by yourself?
As of now, yes. If I do end up bringing someone else on for art, voice acting, etc., it probably wonât be for a while.
Did you say voice acting?
Yep! Ideally I do want to have voice acting. Whether or not it WILL, itâs too early to say.
Which characters will be staying?
As of now, all major characters will be returning. Whether that ends up sticking is to be determined.
And Sonic Man, of course. Who could forget Sonic Man?
Will [insert plot point] still be in the final version?
Thatâll have to wait at least until I have a concrete outline - and thereâs some things I want to keep a secret until the final release.
Will Elise still kiss Sonic?
Nope. First, I donât ship it (but no shame if you do!). Second, even if I did, the current plan is to at least try to leave any ships up to interpretation.
Is Rush/Rivals canon?
No. Silver and Blaze are going to have a new backstory whichâll probably get expanded on at some point. Canon is a sandbox and I am a five year old at play.
When is the finished game coming out?
No clue yet, I literally started this a month ago and have real life to juggle with this.
Where can I get the most up to date info?
These monthly progress reports are going to be the primary source for information. I also might be dropping things more frequently depending on what stage of production Iâm in, but that remains to be seen. Regardless, any updates will be the same on both the official tumblr (r-2006-official) and the Game Jolt page (sorry, itch.io people).
And thatâs pretty much it! Hopefully by next month Iâll have more to report on. If you have questions youâd like me to answer next month, leave a comment!
Thanks for reading, and until next time!

Talking a lot about my AITSF fan project - Updated!
Hi!! So, a few months ago I made a post about my Pewter fan project! I've been working on it lots since then, and I have a ton of new character and story developments! I figured I have enough to make a new, more in-depth post.
If you don't already know, Dream of the Inventor is my AITSF fan story centered on my favourite character Pewter! It's a prequel to AI: The Somnium Files, and is split into two segments: Past and Present. Past follows ABIS' first case using the Psync Machine, and Present follows Pewter being pulled into a sudden murder that is more than it appears. It focuses on themes of love and creation - particularly creators' relationship to what they make. Dreams (literal and as in aspirations) are a motif as well. I'd like to also work in some themes and motifs from AITSF itself, but I'm still working on how they fit in.
I imagine it would go into some things like why Pewter is in ABIS, his relationship to Boss, his past, all that fun stuff! I haven't really thought of all that myself, but I'd like to incorporate it into the story somehow. There's also everything with Renju I'd like to include... Exploring the depth of love that makes him do the things he does in the right routes, and things like that.
As of now, I have the cast of characters and the framework of the story. I'm still working out some specific plot points, but I've got a lot more than I had last time I talked about it! I'm taking a break from the big story to focus on some of the themes, motifs, and smaller details. Things are subject to change of course, but I'm happy with the progress I've made! Mostly locations and somnia are what's being developed at the moment.
All that being said, this is going to be a long post! Characters and story under the cut!
Content warnings for discussions of death and murder, but nothing worse than what's already in AITSF.
Overview - Past
Past takes place in September 2013. The Psync machine is being trialled for the first time to investigate a large theft case. Things go well... Until Pewter and Boss discover an unintended function of the Psync machine. Rokua, the psyncer, and Kurogane, the psync subject, have their consciousnesses swapped into each other's bodies. Pewter takes responsibility and resolves to help solve the case. Stakes get higher as Kurogane disappears while in Rokua's body, and the theft case turns into a murder.
Overview - Present
Five years after the case's conclusion, in September 2018, a body is discovered outside Lemniscate by Renju Okiura. Pewter gets involved in another murder case as connections to the 2013 case become more and more apparent.
Characters (OC files at the end)
Pewter (30 in Past, 35 in Present)
Boss (35 in Past, 40 in Present)
Numea Kurogane, a cold fashion star who's the prime suspect of the 2013 case (36 in Past, 41 in Present)
Rokua Dou, a friend of Pewter's and detective who becomes the first person to psync. She studied psychology, and has a knack for getting inside people's heads. (29 in Past, 34 in Present)
Makane Amanoma, Pewter's younger sister who works as a mail carrier. She's outspoken and outgoing. (24 in Past, 29 in Present)

Okay! Onto the story! I'll only go over the basic details since explaining the whole thing will take way too long, but I'm open to going more in depth if anyone asks! There are a lot of smaller details I still need to figure out, but these are most of the major plotpoints.
Past, 2013
The story opens with Pewter dreaming. I'm still working on what it's exactly about, but it features various parts of his life that come up throughout the story.
The recently formed ABIS has been assigned to investigate a large theft from a tech firm (TBN). Evidence found at the scene points to Kurogane as the prime suspect. However, they're lacking motive. She's not talking, and it's been decided she will be Psynced with. It'll be the first Psync after the Psync machine's completion.
Pewter has gotten in contact with a friend of his from college. Rokua happily agrees to the offer, fascinated by the idea and eager to help.
Before they see Kurogane, Boss calls Pewter into her office to discuss the case. They get talking about dreams, and Boss asks Pewter what his dream is. (I'm still working on the specifics, but it'll be a reoccurring thing as I get more sorted out.)
-
Pewter questions Kurogane before the Psync begins. She isn't fond of him or his outfit.
Kurogane's somnium (TBN) begins. Things go smoothly for about 6 minutes, until things starting getting... Unusual. Kurogane and Rokua swap bodies.
Pewter figures out why it happened and talks to Boss and Rokua after the Psync. Although the Psync system had gone through rigorous testing and research, some things can't be accounted for until it's put to use properly.
Kurogane manages to escape. Pewter takes responsibility and decides to try and fix what happened.
-
Pewter goes to the gardens (TBN) to clear his mind while he comes up with a plan. There, he runs into his sister Makane and her friend Tomorou. Tomorou is using a spare camera because he misplaced him.
Makane notices he seems out of it, and tries to cheer him up. She gets Tomorou to take a photo of them together.
Pewter is able to refocus thanks to his sister, and decides to visit the crime scene for clues on Kurogane's whereabouts.
Pewter talks to Kagami, but gets no information that narrows things down. He then meets Motofumi. They start talking, but Motofumi abruptly says he's leaving. His shift has ended, and he doesn't want to stay overtime. He offers Pewter to meet him at his house the next day since he has the day off.
Pewter leaves, and asks the investigation team to tell him if they see anything suspicious.
-
Pewter, stuck at a dead end, decides to go to Marble to ask Mama if she knows anything. He runs into Tomorou at Golden Yokocho, taking photos of the lights. They talk about Tomorou's dream of using photography to immortalise happy moments and people's memories.
I'm still figuring out what Mama and Pewter talk about, but after some conversation, Mama ultimately doesn't have anything on Kurogane's whereabouts.
Pewter goes home and invites Rokua over to talk about what they're going to do going forward. Pewter tries to be there for her, feeling she's the one who's the most at stake.
-
The following day, Pewter goes to Motofumi's house. They talk about Motofumi's passion for writing (particularly gay romance novels, which Pewter is happy to learn).
When Pewter starts asking about what the thief could've wanted, Motofumi suddenly starts avoiding questions. He shuts down anything Pewter tries asking about, becoming more and more suspicious.
Motofumi is brought in to be psynced with. Rokua insists on psyncing, and they begin his somnium (TBN). They learn of Motofumi's true passion, and that he's only doing his tech job because he can't make a living off his books. They also find out that Motofumi was leading a team looking into the Wadjet system.
After the Psync, Motofumi admits to hiding what he knew. He didn't want to be dragged into something when he already has so little time to work on what he loves. He's taken a liking to Pewter, so he decides to tell him about what's going on.
Motofumi was tasked by the company to look into uses for and experiment with the Wadjet system. It was meant to be confidential, but a data leak happened a while back. Everything the thief took seemed to be related to the work Motofumi was leading.
-
While this is happening, Makane finds and returns Tomorou's camera. She knows there's something important on it, but she doesn't snoop.
Back on the night of the theft, Tomorou got a photo of Gin at the scene. However, Gin saw him, and Tomorou dropped his camera and ran. He was too nervous to bring up what he saw because he thought no one would take him seriously without evidence.
Makane comes up with the idea to meet Pewter to talk to him. She contacts him, but he's still dealing with Motofumi so he can't. They arrange to meet at the gardens the next morning.
Later that night, Tomorou gets a NILE message from an unknown number. They ask him to come to an abandoned building (TBN) on the edge of the Kabasaki district. It was an old establishment of the tech company Motofumi works for. The sender says they can help with Tomorou's photo.
Tomorou is suspicious, but he really wants to help Makane and Pewter. He tells Makane where he's going and that he'll come to her place afterwards. He takes a boxcutter for self defence, and goes to the location.
Gin is there, waiting for him. He tries to talk Tomorou down, but his malicious intentions are clear. Tomorou tries to run, but Gin isn't having it.
Tomorou and Gin struggle. Tomorou manages to cut Gin with the boxcutter, but Gin overpowers him.
Gin destroys Tomorou's camera and takes the boxcutter. Tomorou never shows up to Makane's house.
-
After hours of waiting, Makane gets worried. She goes to find him.
She finds no trace of anyone, until she finds his body inside.
Pewter gets a call from the investigation team. Someone thought they saw Rokua around the old establishment. They also saw Makane loitering around there, and thought her behaviour seemed odd.
Pewter gets a bad feeling. He goes to find his sister, and finds her kneeling over Tomorou's body.
-
The next day, Makane has been brought in for questioning. She's not talking. Pewter is adamant that she's innocent, but knows the circumstances look suspicious.
Boss suggests that he talk to her, and to psync with her if talking is too difficult.
Pewter manages to get her to talk a little, and she agrees to his offer. He decides to be the one to Psync with her, to make it more comfortable for her and to give Rokua a break. After giving Boss an exhaustive explanation of how to make sure nothing goes wrong, they begin Makane's somnium: PSYNCIN' IN THE REPaiR.
Throughout the somnium, Pewter navigates Makane's childhood memories as they weave in with the present. At the end, he discovers a scene from when they were young: A six year old Makane crying over breaking a family belonging. A twelve year old Pewter comes and offers to fix it together. Young Makane is replaced by herself as she was when she found Tomorou's body. Pewter, taking the place of his younger self, gives her a hug.
As he's holding her, he looks up and sees what must be Kurogane in Rokua's body. She leaves before Pewter can do anything, and he runs out of time before he can find out more.
After a heart to heart, Makane is ready to talk. She says what happened, and how she caught a glimpse of Kurogane leaving.
-
Pewter decides to revisit the crime scene. Kagami tells him that they haven't found the murder weapon, and that they discovered two sources of blood. One is Tomorou's, but there's another that doesn't match their databases.
Still figuring out the specifics, but Rokua comes along for an investigation segment.
-
Later, Rokua comes to Pewter and Boss with an idea. Since she's in Kurogane's body, she might be able to find something only Kurogane would have access to. Pewter is hesitant, but Boss thinks it's a great idea.
Pewter ends up agreeing because of the raised stakes. Kurogane needs to be found.
Rokua manages to get into Kurogane's studio. She calls Pewter over to look at what she's found.
Kurogane was there recently, and had left her phone behind. There's recent messages with an unknown number, asking her to come to the abandoned establishment. Rokua and Pewter rush to get there.
Whoever Kurogane was talking to isn't there, but Kurogane is. They catch her and bring her back to be questioned. She still refuses to talk. While questioning her, Pewter notices a bad cut on her hand. He concludes that the blood at the scene must be hers.
Rokua psyncs with her to swap their consciousnesses back. Still working on Kurogane's somnium.
It's successful, and Kurogane is swiftly charged with both the theft and murder of Tomorou. Although Pewter dislikes Kurogane, he is unsure whether they should rush to conclusions. The higher ups are adamant to close the case before word about the Psync machine gets out, though.
The case comes to a close.
Before I go onto Present, here's a quick aside about what's really going on:
Kurogane is a very shut off person. She puts herself into her fashion work, and when people don't understand it, she feels they don't understand her. She shuts them down and turns away from them instead of giving them the chance to learn. The only person who feels connected to is Gin, and she's desperate to hold onto that friendship. After escaping, she went to him and told him all about what happened.
Gin thinks of her as a friend too, but his idea of their friendship... is pretty twisted. He stole from the tech firm (I'll get to that later), and asked her to help him move some things. When she showed up, he left her there. When he killed Tomorou, he escaped with his stuff and asked for her to get the boxcutter so CSI couldn't learn anything from it. But once again, she got caught and suspicion was cast on her. Still, she held onto that faith in him.
Gin caught onto what was going on and called Kurogane to get the boxcutter back. He realised Pewter and Rokua were coming, so he split.
Present (2018)
Present starts with a little prologue. Five years after the conclusion of the case, Pewter is simply living his life. He checks in with Boss, sees Rokua, and bumps into Makane. Rokua became an official psyncer at ABIS, and has befriended Makane.
It's a very special day and Pewter has a very special someone to give a very special gift to. He goes to Renju and gifts him the watch for their anniversary.
-
A couple of weeks later, Renju is working late at night at Lemniscate. When he finally leaves to go home, he stumbles upon a dead body slumped against the building.
Rokua is assigned to the case.
When Pewter finds out the next day, he immediately goes to see Renju. He asks about what happened, but Renju doesn't have anything to say beyond what he saw. Renju needs to be questioned officially, but he asks Pewter to come see him tomorrow at Lemniscate.
Pewter gets a bad feeling about Renju being involved, and decides to do some investigating of his own.
Pewter goes to the crime scene to see if he can find out anything. He learns the victim was Hiyori Kin. Kagami tells him about how they'v figured out 2 things: The murder weapon is missing, and that the true scene of the murder is somewhere else. They've had no progress finding either though.
Pewter finds a golden necklace the victim was wearing. He's permitted to take it to ask questions.
Pewter goes to Marble to ask if she knows anything about Hiyori. She doesn't have anything, but they end up talking about Renju.
-
The next day, Pewter calls Renju to ask if he can come see him. Renju says Mizuki is visiting, so Pewter encourages him to spend time with her and says he'll come around later.
Pewter goes to the gardens for a break. He's interrupted when Masaru asks him to move so he can see the scenery.
Now, this is one of the plotpoints I do not have figured out. Long story short, Pewter finds out Masaru knows Motofumi, and Masaru acts suspicious about the case when Motofumi is brought up to him. Makane and Rokua will probably be involved in this part somehow.
Masaru and Motofumi were friends, but five years ago, they had a conflict. They were making something together, Masaru making illustrations and Motofumi writing. However, Masaru's own stress began building up. He got mad at Motofumi for "not taking it seriously", and they ended up fighting. Masaru was so horrified with himself that he thought Motofumi must hate him. Masaru cut off any contact, and disappeared. Meanwhile, Motofumi was a bit frustrated but didn't think things were over. But Masaru's actions left him lost, not really knowing why his friend abandoned him.
All of that would tie in with the 2013 case and start showing how they're connected, but I'm still trialling ideas for that.
Masaru's somnium is PSYNCIN' IN THE PORTRaiT. Rokua psyncs with him and learns of how badly he wants to be with Motofumi again, but can't bear facing him after breaking their friendship. The somnium ends in him reconciling with his feelings.
After the somnium, Pewter and Rokua talk to Masaru. Pewter offers to reach out to Motofumi to help them reunite.
Motofumi and Masaru meet for the first time in years. Motofumi shouts at him... Before breaking down into tears and bringing him into a hug.
-
Masaru and Motofumi tell Pewter the information about the case. Pewter leaves the friends to talk while he goes to Lemniscate to see Renju.
When he arrives, Renju isn't there. Instead, he's greeted by Seiko, who's curious about him. She introduces herself and explains how she's a new idol.
Renju appears. Seiko introduces her boss to Pewter, clueless.
They all talk about what Seiko's been doing, and Renju encourages her to show her talents. Seiko performs her own song and dance.
After the performance, Renju excuses himself and Pewter to talk about the murder. He takes Pewter to one of the offices.
-
Seiko doesn't mistrust Pewter, but she doesn't get what his weirdly dressed old man wants with her boss! So she eavesdrops.
Seiko had heard that there'd been a body found, but she hadn't been told much about it. Renju didn't think she needed to know the disturbing details. Her TV had been broken that morning, so she missed the news too.
She hears them mention Hiyori, and realises that she knows the victim. Her shock gives herself away.
She demands that Pewter and Renju tell her about it. Pewter and Renju cave, and Pewter shows her necklace.
Turns out her father, Taichi, made the necklace. Hiyori came by his shop everyday to talk to him, so Seiko's met her a few times.
Upset over Hiyori, Seiko offers to take Pewter to Taichi. She wants the case solved.
Renju lets him go, while he thinks of ways to help Pewter.
At Seiko and Taichi's house, Pewter asks Taichi about Hiyori. He confirms he made the necklace, but can't think of anything related to the murder.
Pewter thanks Taichi for his time, and leaves. He has no leads, and Rokua hasn't found anything new either.
-
The next day, Renju comes to Pewter's house. He has been hard at work looking for information, and got something from the Kumakuras. Hiyori was connected to the Wadjet system, and that there's a chance it's related to the case.
Renju asks to help Pewter investigate. The two go see what they can learn. They visit Marble and see Mama. Then they Rokua to see how her investigation is going, then they go to Seiko to see if she knows anything else about Hiyori. She points them to her dad.
When Pewter asks if Taichi knows about Hiyori and the Wadjet system, he uncharacteristically clams up. He's clearly trying to hide something. Renju is suspicious and Pewter knows that Taichi is going to have to be psynced with.
Pewter and Renju agree to meet up later at Renju's house.
-
Rokua psyncs with Taichi. His somnium is called PSYNCIN' IN THE REMaiN.
Taichi's somnium follows his grief for his late wife, Ukana. Ukana was a sunny, zealous person who brought out the best in him. Sadly, she died in a car accident six years ago. Her death left Taichi to raise their daughter alone.
His somnium shifts to focus on Seiko. He wants to stay by her side and be the best father he can to her. He hates the idea of ever hurting her after the grief she's suffering after her mother's death.
At the end of the somnium, they learn that Taichi was blackmailed into keeping quiet. The blackmailer told him to keep quiet about Hiyori, or else they'd come for Seiko.
Pewter and Rokua approach Taichi about it. He confesses about the blackmail, and Pewter assures that it won't get out. The only people who'll know are Pewter, Rokua, and Renju - because it concerns Seiko's safety, he can keep an eye on her while she's at work.
Taichi explains about Hiyori. She told him how she was a programmer on the Wadjet system when she lived in America. She was well respected, got a lot of praise for her work, and even got promoted. Pewter keeps the information in mind, and leaves to meet Renju.
-
Pewter goes to Renju's house. (I imagine here there'd be a lot of focus on Renju, and Pewter and Renju's relationship through dialogue and the things in Renju's house.) He tells Renju about the blackmail.
Renju is concerned for Pewter, and they have a moment together.
The two go to bed together.
-
While Renju and Pewter get ready for the morning, Renju gets a panicked call from Taichi. Seiko is missing. She said (to her still mostly asleep dad) that she was going out early and that'd she back in no time. Seiko never came back. Taichi is calling everyone who knows her to help find her.
Renju is afraid. He's had an experience with a girl close to Seiko's age not coming back after they said they would.
Pewter contacts Rokua and Boss, and asks for their help. Together, they all look for her. Renju accompanies Pewter and they search and ask around.
Eventually, they do find her at the abandoned establishment on the edge of Kabasaki. They briefly panic because she's not moving. However, Renju checks and sees she's still alive. Just winded and has a few bruises.
Pewter gets in contact with Rokua and Boss to let them know what's going on. Boss suggests bringing in Seiko for psyncing.
Pewter tells Renju that he's going to look after Seiko and see if he can find anything from her. Renju goes to Taichi to tell him his daughter is safe.
-
Seiko's somnium is PSYNCIN' IN THE ENTERTaiN. Rokua psyncs with her. It's bright and flashy, but darkness creeps in between the energy.
Seiko is desperate for her music to be seen and heard, but she's also insecure about it. She holds herself to very high standards.
Not only that, she thinks of Ukana as part of her music. Her mother taught her everything she knew, so Seiko feels that if more people hear her music, her mother's spirit can live on.
At the end of the somnium, they see Gin looking over Seiko. (I was thinking that they got a description from someone, so they're able to make some connections. Still working on the specifics in a way I'm happy with.)
-
When she wakes up, Seiko explains what she was doing. Taichi doesn't carry his phone around with him, and left it behind when he went with Pewter. She found the messages from the blackmailer, and figured out the location she would've been taken to.
She didn't want to scare Taichi by telling him what she was doing, but she wanted to do something about the case. So she snuck out. She intended to just have a look and get out before anything happened.
She saw Gin, but the walkway she was watching from was unstable from age. Part of it gave way, and she fell. She was lucky to not be hurt too badly.
Gin noticed and came to her, but he heard Renju and Pewter coming. He had to leave.
-
There may be something else happening here, but for now, Pewter has his suspicions about the 2013 case. There's only two people he can ask about it. The first is Makane.
He had been putting it off because he didn't want to put her through that, but he needs to confirm some things.
He invites Makane over to his house for a talk. She confirms that never actually saw Kurogane hurt Tomorou. She doesn't have anything else for him, though.
-
The other person he needs to see is Kurogane. He makes some calls, and gets her brought in from prison. She hasn't been doing well. She tries to be proud, still.
She hates him even more than she did before. But she has finally given up on Gin. She wants him stopped... So he doesn't make things even worse for himself.
So Pewter asks if her she killed Tomorou.
She did not. It was Gin.
Pewter back to the abandoned establishment. Still working out the specifics, but he finds evidence that it's where Hiyori actually died, and that she got killed with the boxcutter.
And then Gin appears from the shadows, and calls him Pewter.
-
Gin background time. I'm not sure how it'll be communicated in the story, but I'm writing it now so there's context.
Gin lived in America for some time. He was a skilled programmer at Elgorg and was brought on to work Wadjet System.
Now, Gin views his way as the only way. He can't stand criticism, and he especially can't stand anyone being better than him. He believes that he deserves all the praise and attention.
Being brought onto such a big, advanced project only made those aspects more extreme. He had friends, but his behaviour pushed most of them away if he didn't sabotage the relationship himself. Only one person stayed with him the whole time: Hiyori Kin.
Hiyori was not a bad person, but she lacked self awareness and wasn't very considerate. She could be pretty oblivious. She simply didn't pick up on Gin's worsening behaviour, mostly thinking of herself.
Meanwhile, Gin grew increasingly bitter towards her. She was doing better than him, getting more and more praise as she established herself. Gin hated that.
One day, Gin snapped. He got into a spat with one of his co-workers, getting so angry that he physically attacked them. The incident was reported, and the people overseeing the project knew he couldn't be trusted to stay. But they needed his skills.
They kept him around as long as he was useful, and promptly fired him. He took it very badly. Immediately after, he left the country and went back to Japan. After he was gone, Hiyori was promoted in his place.
He stewed in his bitterness and jealousy. He thought that he should be getting all the praise, that without him the Wadjet system would be worthless. How dare they get rid of him and act like nothing was different?
That's when he came up with an idea. He wanted to find out how it was being used so he could tear it all down. It was a pretty nebulous plan, and not exactly... Sound. But he became convinced of it. If he couldn't be at the forefront of it, no one should get to have it.
Thus his motive behind the theft. He wanted to gather information before he figured out what he was actually going to do. Getting caught would ruin everything, so that's why he took advantage of Kurogane and killed Tomorou.
After Kurogane was out of the picture, Gin lost his scapegoat. He stewed in his anger, using what he had learnt to formulate a new plan to tear down anyone connected to the Wadjet System.
-
Meanwhile, Hiyori had been enjoying a successful career. She was perfectly comfortable. A few years before 2018, she decided to move back to Japan to pursue her own projects. There, she met Taichi and purchased the necklace.
Then she found out Gin lived in Tokyo too. She reached out to him, not thinking that he wouldn't be happy to see her.
Gin was really not happy to see her. But out of spite, he decided to see what she had to say for herself. He invited her to the abandoned establishment.
Hiyori talked about how well she was doing. She talked about her success, her praise, her promotion. She wasn't trying to brag, but Gin didn't take it that way. He grew angrier and angrier at her, finally venting all his bitter frustrations. He grabbed a hold of her, and something finally clicked for her. As Gin implied what he had done 5 years ago, Hiyori caught on. But it was too late.
In a fit of nothing but jealousy and rage, Gin murdered Hiyori with the same boxcutter he killed Tomorou with.
He had to move the body because he didn't want people investigating the place that had become a hideout for him, but he felt a need to have it found... To bring Hiyori down, to have a sort of warning. Really, it was to satisfy his own hatred despite how much easier it would be get rid of it anyway. That is why he moved it so far away, outside Lemniscate where it was sure to be found. (I'm still thinking if there's a reason as to why Lemniscate specifically.)
-
Now, when Gin found out about the Psync system and Pewter, he was immediately angry at Pewter. The engineer's use of the Wadjet system was enough to set him off, but not only that. Pewter is admired, relied on, and loved by his co-workers and friends. Gin knew Pewter was better than him, and he despised him for it. Pewter became a threat before he had even done anything.
Gin's grudge only grew as the case went on, even moreso by the time 2018 came.
He calls Pewter by his workplace nickname as a way of reducing him to just his work. He doesn't see Amanoma, the man with his own life and dreams. He just sees Pewter, the engineer whose mere actions are a threat.
-
Back to the present. Going forward, everything is a lot less defined story wise. I'm still working stuff out.
Gin confronts Pewter. He's been spying on him and the other people involved in the case. He demands that Pewter let him psync with him. I'm still not 100% sure how he convinces Pewter, but it definitely involves threatening Renju somehow. Either way, he puts Pewter in a really tight situation and Pewter gives in.
Pewter sneaks Gin back to ABIS when Boss isn't there. While he's setting up the Psync machine to run for a set time, he uses his watch to discreetly record Gin. He sends it to Boss as a last ditch effort for help.
-
Pewter's somnium is PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiNFRAME. Still figuring out what it entails.
Afterwards, Gin goes to leave with his new information. He's promptly stopped by Boss arriving in the nick of time. She knocks him out and tells Pewter she'll yell at him later. For now, he needs to psync with Gin.
Still figuring out Gin's somnium, but it shows his crimes.
Because evidence found in somnium can't be used and they have no other evidence, Pewter pursues Gin back to his hideout to put a stop to him.
-
This is the climax, and so far I have pretty much nothing, but I'll go over what I do have.
Pewter confronts Gin, but he struggles against him. During the conflict, an electrical fire from faulty wires and outlets start. Gin is so fixated on taking down on Pewter that he doesn't even care.
Rokua, Makane, and Renju appear to help.
Things happen, and the building's faulty infrastructure gives in to the fire. Pewter barely escapes when the building comes down on Gin.
-
Pewter is exhausted.
Makane, Rokua, and Renju take him back to his house to rest.
The following morning, he goes to ABIS. Boss confirms that Gin is dead. A lot of the evidence that condemned Gin was destroyed, but Boss was able to pull some strings and prove that it wasn't Kurogane. She gets to go free.
Pewter is glad it's over. The case is closed, for real this time.
Both cases are made confidential, and everyone involved is asked to keep quiet. Information about the Psync system absolutely cannot get out.
-
There's a little epilogue where Pewter goes around talking to everyone.
He gets invited to the gardens where he meets Renju. Seiko shows up, and... Cue the dance number finale!!! Roll credits!
Okay! That should be everything! This is far from everything I want to include - I want to expand on all the characters, work more on relationships, tie up loose ends, all that stuff. This is merely the overarching story, and this isn't even all the details! This isn't getting into everyone's full personalities, or the symbolism, or the motifs I want to develop on... Not to mention Pewter, he has a lot going on ofc! But it's hard to fit all that into just a plot summary.
If you're here, thanks for reading! I'm going to include the character files below as a bonus! (I might repost them separately sometime?) As always, I love questions and I will happily talk about any points of interest. There's a lot I couldn't go into here, so I'm more than willing to go over the intricacies.

hi carrot
its kinda a long speech and not really a great one so iâm sorry if youâre not used to criticism(i havenât seen any of it yet) but iâve been talking about it with my friend and i canât hide the urge to ask you what happened
iâve been following OW updates for a looong long time now, and i feel like what you started with isnât really what youâre going with right now, iâm not telling you that you should change the whole plot that you have or anything, iâm just saying that OW kinda lost this vibe that iâve got while playing the first 4 arcs
before it was a disturbing, kinda frightening, messed-up in its own way story, with fucked-up characters and the same fucked-up backgrounds. while playing it iâve felt like you didnât give a shit about how gory or wicked the novel is because itâs just how the story was! you made me feel conflicted emotions towards every character, everyone had their EXTREMELY bad side but in the same amount a good one, and nothing of it was left aside like itâs nothing. Technically, the only reason why i loved OW so much is because of how much crazy stuff was going on, like literally my heart was on FIRE after each arc, i was only thinking about how fucked up(in a good way) this story is!
So⌠Since the first part of Arc 5 i knew that it wasnât it anymore, everything felt too rushed and tooâŚkind? I mean, i didnât really get the whole thing about how Iggy and Genzou just let all of the things that Gidget did slide, they didnât even really apologise for anything? I get that itâs wonderland who messed up their minds and finally theyâre free from it whoohoo but no way that it could be THAT easily forgiven. I liked the ending of second part but? Genzou was a fucking dick for more than a decade and literally ruined Orlam, and definitely did something terrible at some point(that you decided to keep behind the scenes(iâm talking about the one thing that he regrets)), itâs just NO WAY that a âsorryâ would cut it. He didnât do anything yet to earn it. And Iggy isnât a perfect guy either. Itâs okay for now, no time for heart to heart talks and stuff, but it would be really sad if everyone just gonna accept things just how they are.
so um shit thatâs a LOT of words, but i just wanted to tell that it feels like youâre either holding back or just decided to turn everything into semi-sweet story about forgiveness and mistakes and power of friendship?? i know that everyone like it right now, and you really really improved on technical and artistic side, which is fantastic
iâm just curious about how do you see OW as of now, what story is it, did i missed some parts which made me think like itâs a whole another thing? feel free to tell me âYOUâRE WRONGâ if itâs really like that
hey!! thanks so much for sending this in. i don't mind criticism at all and i would never tell you that you're wrong 𤣠i know fully well that this is far from a perfect game and there are many things wrong with it. both simply because nothing is ever perfect and also because my skills and capacity as a solo developer have their limits (even putting my own mental health on any given day aside alkdjfalsd)
this turned out really long and rambling so i've put it under a cut LOL
that's a good question tbh -- if something changed since i began working on the game. quite a few things have i will admit. many plot points weren't developed until mid-way through production. character arcs went in new ways. new characters came into being that i had never planned for. so i do think you're exactly right in that yeah, the game has taken a lot of turns and the vibe of the end is probably quite different from the earlier stuff, in particular Arc 1. actually my very first iteration of the initial idea was just to have the whole game be Arc 1! 𤣠it was only after sitting on it a while (still long before actual production began) that i happened upon the idea of the loops and then began thinking about each of the characters' initial core arcs. and then by the time production of each arc came around, they changed even more as i actually began writing them. i think Arc 2 was probably the one that changed the least from my initial ideas. then starting in Arc 3, things began to change a lot. and that compounded more and more, to the point that Arc 4 was almost nothing like my initial idea aside from the fact that I knew it would focus on Gidget. for instance, plot points like after-prom and everything involved didn't even come into being until I was working on Arc 3. so there were a LOT of like, plot lines that didn't really work their way into the game until various points throughout production. and a lot of that just comes down to me living with the characters and story more and discovering new things about them while writing. and also adding more and more of myself??? i think that was also a big thing. the more i worked on the game, the more of myself went into the game, and the more "courageous" i felt about what i was putting into the game. i will be completely honest here and say that when i released Arc 1, i was actually afraid of saying there was going to be some "gay stuff" in it đ¤ŁđŚ i was nervous about being so open and out there with my creative works, especially as someone who's a bit older and keeps to themself more in general already. but then the more i worked on the game, the more courageous i felt, and the more of myself went into the game, and the more open i started to feel, which allowed me to be myself a lot more. in a way, in my head at least, my mindset from back from when i was working on Arc 1 is a lot different from now in that at the time, my goal was to just create something horrific and more in the general horror category, but now it's become much more personal to me and i don't really care as much about being shocking and horrific as i do about about the characters themselves and how important they've become to me and how my own personal stories have evolved through them. so it is perhaps a bit of a different mindset and is probably evident even in the way i talk about the game too đŚđŚđŚ and i also realize that this might be not what a lot of people like, especially if they liked the game more for the dark and horrific aspects. so for that i apologize to anyone who also feels let down by some of the directions the game has taken that may not be in line with their expectations đ
i'm also really sorry that Arc 5 has felt rushed to you so far. for me personally it doesn't feel rushed at all as i've been working on Arc 5 on its own for over a year now and it's still not done and i've burnt out multiple times on it 𤣠but i can understand how on a player side it could feel that way, especially with all the other unmet expectations about the game and story. i have always been heading towards what i refer to as a "light in the tunnel" with the ending of the game. i think even as far back as responding to comments on itch from like Arc 1 and Arc 2 era i wrote things like that, especially when people would ask about the eventual ending LOL perhaps because with my previous game it did NOT have any kind of hopeful ending. but i did definitely want to lead into an ending that wasn't completely hopeless. that even if not everything was "fixed" (since there are some things that just will never be fixed) it's at least better off than things were before. but i freely admit that the way i handle reaching that point might not meet everyone's expectations (and this is one of my biggest fears and anxieties tbh... because there's been so much build-up and people have a lot of expectations now and there's basically no way i'm going to meet them all đŚ)
Arc 5 is interesting to me in that there are quite a few things about it that actually do match my initial ideas for it almost exactly -- even back from when i was still working on Arcs 1 and 2 and just thinking towards the future. for instance, i actually started randomly working on some Arc 5 sprites in december of 2021 (and accidentally left them in the Arc 2 game files that some people found LOL). they were similar to what they would eventually become (orlam was basically zombiefied, gidget was wearing a very fancy dress, and genzou looked mentally traumatized), though i didn't end up finishing/using them as there were slight things that changed about them and also my drawing skills had gotten better by the time Arc 5 rolled around too lol. so i did have a general idea of how each character arc would culminate even if i didn't have all the ideas worked out specifically (most of the final details weren't worked out until i was literally writing things). i also drew this picture in summer of 2022 while working on Arc 4 that would eventually become a basically 1-to-1 CG because the scene was so visceral in my mind:
however there were a lot of other parts of Arc 5 that didn't come into being until i was working on it. cecil's involvement for instance, since cecil himself didn't come into being until Arc 4. jerry's involvement, since jerry didn't become more of an actual character until i developed OFW (rather than just the one-off joke in Arc 2). the final collector scene was one i knew would happen but didn't know exactly how i was gonna do it until i actually wrote it (and was also influenced by my work on OFW). the iggy dolls i did come up with somewhat early on, though their kind of quirky manner and scenes didn't really develop until i was actually working on it. and the spider idea for gidget's finale was something that didn't develop until i was actively working on Arc 5. the scenes in orlam's castle were actually pretty close to my original visions for them (i even had the music picked out for the chase scene already since like Arc 1 or 2 LOL) even if it wasn't until i was working on 5.15 that i figured out exactly how to do the final genzou/orlam bit (i had a few different potential iterations in my mind for it, though they all had similar vibes)
i'm probably writing way too much at this point 𤣠but i guess i just wanted to show how indeed a lot has changed since production started and Arc 1 was released, though there were still other parts that did remain at least basically the same in spirit. so i guess it's kind of a mixed bag! but you're definitely right that no matter how many specific scenes might have remained the same or changed, the overall vibe likely has changed, which all comes down to me and how i've changed and how my approach and mindset has also changed
to that end, i can really only apologize đ the game is in a place where now where i'm happier than i've been with it since all of production, but i freely admit it might have turned into something that people don't like anymore or that doesn't meet their expectations. also that i could have done things better -- devoted more time to it, written it better, developed the characters better. i am only human and so the things i create will have many flaws. i'm always trying to improve! but no matter how much i improve there will always still be issues. game dev in and of itself is just something i do for fun because i want to tell stories. it's not something i ever want to make money off of for instance. i really just do it because i enjoy it (and sometimes it's the only thing that keeps me going through my mental health stuff) and i also know that i don't have the skills to make anything that will ever be more than that. i'm really sorry to anyone i've let down because of the direction of the story and the changes in how i've approached the game. i wish i could have made a better game for you đ

Hey...been a while, hasn't it?
So this comic has been at a standstill for a while now. I'd like to have a talk about that, and about how we'll be going forward from here, and I need to ask your opinion on something as well. There's a poll under the cut but I'd appreciate if you could read the rest of my ramble before voting.
So, uh...prepare for a word wall, heh. Sorry.
This year has been slow for Ask Cueball for several reasons. First, Arc 1 ended, and there was a long break because of that. Then physical injuries made me unable to draw for a long time. But neither of those really apply anymore. I've healed from my injury (and learning to help what didn't heal) and if you follow my main art blog you'd know that I've been drawing again for a while.
So I've been thinking lately about why it's been so hard for me to work on Ask Cueball, and I think it comes down to two things - one part of it has to do with my art and how it's grown and changed, and the other is my interests and how THOSE have grown and changed.
I do like Ask Cueball's art style, I like how simple and clean and consistent and expressive it is. I think Ask Cueball is really what helped me start to develop my own personal style. But at the same time...at this point, my style has evolved beyond it. Ask Cueball was drawn with a mouse on an old broken laptop. Since then, everything has updated and changed. It feels counterproductive to go back to my old methods of art, like I'm limiting myself, going backwards.
And then when it comes to interests...once again if you follow my art blog, you've probably noticed I haven't drawn anything Sonic or shapebot related in a long time. Things change, I've discovered new things, found myself in fandoms that are...honestly WAY kinder and chiller than the Sonic fandom (because let's be honest, even in our little corner of shapebot hell with a population of like 20 people there's still been some drama).
But, all that said...I still love this place. I love the story, the characters, all of it. I love my fans, especially those who have stuck around even throughout this slow, uneventful year. I love this comic. Which is why I'm refusing to end it here. I want to keep Ask Cueball going, and I've set a hard deadline for myself to release a comic post in November. After that, well...this is where I need your help.
My thought was that maybe it might be quicker for me to update Ask Cueball if I did it in sketches? But I don't want to lower the visual quality...and then that last legitimate option, the one with the comic being cancelled? I will only do that one if it gets above 90% approval. I don't want to end the comic like that, I want to see it through to completion, but if this is what we think we need to do then we will do it.
So basically, this poll is asking what's more important to you, the speed or the quality:
The first option will likely be slowest, but the comic won't lose ANY of it's quality or polish. This is what I'd like to do but I worry about how long it may be between posts.
The second option should be a little quicker, but the comic will be worse, sloppier with little-to-no color, and will no longer have its clean quality.
The third option (again, only happens if it gets above 90%) will be the quickest, as I will just tell you the remaining story over probably 1-3 posts, with little to no art at all, and then it will be done. The comic is over.
Regardless of what wins, the next post will be coming out in November, and it will be in the old style, as it is partially complete and I don't want to switch styles mid-post. I do not guarantee returning to our old weekly posting schedule, REGARDLESS of which option wins the vote.
I felt guilty that I missed the 3rd Anniversary in September, but I also felt like I hadn't done enough this year to really celebrate the 3rd year as though the blog was still going as strong as it had before. I hope that going forward, we won't have to miss the 4th too.
TL;DR - Ask Cueball hasn't been active much this year for several reasons, but it will be coming back.

i just discovered and so the moon wept recently and i adore everything about it, its very much a fic i didnt know i needed but am so happy to have found thank u for blessing us with itđââď¸ ur take on kakashi is so refreshing and well written i love him and i love u for putting him in a terrible situation and then having him utilize his intelligence and abilities to get himself out of it. would u mind sharing ur inspirations for the fic?
Haha thank you!
I've actually read through pretty much all of the Kakashi time-travel and Kakashi-centric fics and most of them felt... a bit too nice? Like the struggle wasn't enough, and often I felt that some author's writing styles were a bit difficult for me to enjoy and there just wasn't a fic that was exactly what I was looking for so I figured if no one was going to do it, I would have to... _(:С)â )_
I find the often a simple but intriguing premise makes for a good way to build an AU in a way that hooks a reader, rather than starting from an entirely established AU which can cause a lot of confusion so! It was just Kakashi takes Obito's place, but since there's no plot because he's not an Uchiha that Madara would find use in, he's just gotta deal with it. I really wanted to explore Kakashi's mental state and his perspective!
My main inspiration is my mental illness! (joking, kind of) I took the above premise and basically just tossed it around in my head over and over again for months until I decided to write it, but as someone who doesn't actually watch the source material, I take massive inspiration from other fic in the fandom, which also is where I get a lot of my information lol.
My main fandom inspirations are:
In Good Company (Sasuke-centric fic where canon diverges and he kills Orochimaru and returns to Konoha + Sasuke can see the Hokage ghosts, crazy good writing style and dips into mature subjects, but can be a bit confusing for first time readers) by weialala
The Hidden Prodigy (Kakashi-centric time-travel fic, old, but changed something fundamentally in my brain since I was reading it while it was updating so many years ago) by Applepie
Of course, Blackkkat's fics - in particular their Sakumo/Orochimaru fics, even though they're no longer in the fandom. Their fics in particular really helped me in developing my characterisation of Sakumo, even though I feel that my Sakumo is quite different from theirs.
Talking about Sakumo, I also (funnily enough) took a lot of inspiration from my own, super old fic If Only We Were Leaf-born where you can see the beginnings of the Kakashi and Sakumo characterisation that I'd only just begun to create.
Because my naruto phase rolls around only every couple of years, I actually completely forgot I created this fic and the skin I use on my Ao3 doesn't easily show that the fic was created by me so when I was scrolling through the Sakumo tag this year, I came across it and was like "damn that's crazy! this fic is like,,.. exactly what I didn't know I needed in my life" and then halfway through I was like.... hold on a second, wtf I recognise this..... IT WAS ME???
It's actually crazy how many new fics have been made since 2020 and a bit sad to see how many older fics have disappeared... I had a lot of fun reading through the new juggernauts of the naruto fandom, especially since most of them hadn't been created or were just new babies when I fell out of the fandom.
Anyway, that's enough of my blabbing haha thank you for enjoying my fic!

Making an app feel like a place: real-time, persistence, pictures and words
The first room in Experiment 2.
I've always been fascinated with apps that convey a sense of things happening "in the same place." From Minecraft servers to shared Google documents, many virtual platforms seem to foster a sense of shared geography by virtue of their design.
Ever since the research survey, I feel like I'm approaching a sense of what makes a virtual platform feel like a place, and the most succinct way to state those insights thus far is that it's a combination of:
Real-time
Persistence
Pictures, and
Words.
To break this down a little: the platform should support a back and forth of interactions between users who are present at the same time. This makes up what some refer to as co-presence (Schroeder, 2002). It should also support scattered, accumulative interactions between users who are not present at the same time. Changes made by one person should alter the app's state for everyone else, but also remain in place for subsequent users to see and engage with.
As for what media actually gets sent/placed in an app like this, this varies massively across platforms with different aims, but for something to feel like a place, it seems that the minimum is a combination of both spatial (i.e. visual or positional) and precise (textual) communication. (While media types aren't the focus of this post, it's a curious hunch that I will explore later.)
All of these traits would ideally be woven together into a single continuous interaction experience (rather than separate texting, drawing and streaming features, for example). The user does the rest of the work: the feeling of place emerges from what they do with the platform.
And it largely cannot be forced. But when it happens, it can be exciting.
---
So, let's start designing a place-like app from first principles!
It's easy to take for granted all the design elements needed to project an app's capabilities. People don't automatically "buy into" the synchronicity and asynchronicity of an app: it must be built to telegraph these features. They must be made aware that:
There are others are "present" on the same platform,
Their actions are being broadcast to all concurrent users as they happen, and,
Their changes won't simply vanish after the browser is closed.
#3 seems complex to telegraph, but it is actually the easiest solved. New users should be introduced to the app via an instance (document, room, world, whatever) that is not blank. Ideally, it would already been altered in deliberate ways.
Oftentimes, having something already there is simply the natural result of a user bringing a friend into the experience, but if you're the one launching it, you might want to put something clearly hand-made in the very first instance you publish, an exemplar to "seed" the possibilities of the app. Approach it playfully.
Now for the pricklier part. We would like our place-like app to feel synchronous, so it should update in real time. What are some ways to do this?
While I don't want to bring too much jargon into this, we can't really discuss this in abstract without at least touching on what technologies are available to us.
Before the PhD, all my synchronous apps worked by polling a server. For lightweight apps without much of a userbase, it does the job. It's how my first PhD related web project, Two Map, works, actually. An app that tacitly plots movement on a map, it sends your location data back to a server and retrieves any updates since the last call.
(My supervisor called this a "stalker app," which isn't wrong! I figured that any location-based app I made would have to explicitly request consent from the user before starting, or give the option to pick a location. But that for another post.)
But polling a server becomes a problem if more people are using an app and too many simultaneous updates emerge as a real concern.
The most accessible solution for web development is websockets, and for ease I went with Pusher, which lets you set up a websocket server with a free plan + paid tiers scaling to number of messages a day. Most programming languages/libraries that interface with the internet support TCP or UDP sockets in some form and one can pick based on needs and resources.
Whatever the protocol used, these are low-overhead connections that are kept open between app instances to relay very short segments of data - enough, usually, for you to convey and update positioning, URL pointers, and text content, or to signal for an app to refresh.
Pretty cool! But beyond the technicalities, we also need to think about how to show users that this open connection exists. The easiest and perhaps most obvious is real-time visual updates. A user adds something to the page, that thing shows up on everyone's page.
But what happens for a user who's using the app at a time when no one else is online?
That seems little outside of one's control, but there actually is a way to telegraph synchronicity even then: by letting past concurrent users record their synchronous interactions in a clear, textual way.
From the first board in Experiment 3.
This is where the persistence of communicative features is paramount: if a user sees something pop up, they can react immediately with text or an image, and said reaction is preserved on the canvas. This demonstrates to fellow users, present and future, that the interaction happened as a back and forth!
Future users may not necessarily come to this conclusion from seeing past interactions, but it certainly doesn't hurt to support it.
Finally, there are more explicit ways to show that there are other people around, from user icons in a corner, to a "N users online" slug, to cursors or avatars on the page. These are often collectively called presence indicators in corporate speak.
I like to employ spatialised presence indicators (like cursors that show "where" other users' cursors are), but implementing realtime cursor indicators can be heavy on the TCP/UDP server, so since I am lacking a budget, I settle for an indicator that updates when the user makes a significant interaction (e.g. clicking the canvas to open a form).
As with everything else, this requires buy-in from the users. They need to want to play with it! There are ways to invite play, and that could be the subject of another post. But set up the platform right, and you're at least delivering an open invitation for such interactions.
That's all for today - thanks for reading! I'm excited to delve into each of the experiments in more detail next.
