orcs & humans? same hat
y'know i think, when it comes to classic western fantasy species, humans would be closest to orcs.
the most integration, the most shared history living in cooperation/proximity, on the same page, all that jazz.
'but alyson, why? why orcs?' because, imaginary question-asker i made up because i don't actually expect anyone else to be interested in this stuff but me, orcs and humans are the same: we survive. we're stubborn fucks who are very good a making the best out of bad situations.
literally, human beings as a species work on the root of adaptability. we're all over the world because we're good at change, and the constant drive to keep improving things for ourselves. we're hard coded to be social: help each other weather the storm, using the group as a way of improving anything an individual would lack. we're hardy fuckers with histories upon histories of constantly pushing the envelope, surviving all sorts of nonsense and trying to be better for it.
hey, what are orcs known for in fantasy stories? being hardy stubborn fucks who refuse to give up? being able to live in places other species have deemed inhospitable due to sheer 'no fuck u' attitudes? remember all those sci fi posts on this website that talks about how humans, in an intergalactic multi-alien-species setting would probably be seen as the 'orcs' of the setting? Yeah that's because we're the sammmmmmme.
anyways, human-orc solidarity in fantasy stories, please. lemme have it.
#come to newfoundland and you'll see the kind of attitude/way-of-being i'm thinking of#when i say orcs and humans are the same#go to any small town here (so most settlements since we have only one actual modern town really and it's the capital)#and you'll see the hardiness + the social-openness that allows survival#i mean i'm using a very personal example but obviously you can pull from any group of people on the planet really#any time period#humans have always been humans after all#and that's really comforting actually#fantasy talk#orcs#ramblings#fantasy things#what are my tags#fantasy stuff#i can see a lotta orcs being like nflders here in the 'omg you have no meat on you. HERE EAT EVERYTHING!' kinda way ;u;#'get that foods inta ya!'#have ALL the stews and soups and rabbit and fish#and root veggies

the ministry ⛧ the gardens and grounds
#i imagine the gardens being expansive and wild#not just growing things such as fruit and veggies to help provide for the ministry’s operations#but cultivating flowers and herbs that can be used both aesthetically and medicinally#where if you’re wandering the gardens every turn you take you encounter something new and exciting#an old reflection pool or an ancient tree with gnarled roots#but have caution you’re not out on the grounds after dark#lest you become prey for prowling ghouls#the band ghost#curator reader series#the ministry

pikmin

pikmin
#I hc that red pikmin have tiny little spines‚ like glochids#and that’s why they do more damage#also I tried making the white and purple ones be more root veggie like since they live in the caves#yes that is a root tail. it helps white pikmin with digging#purple also have the tail because again. root like. mayhaps it contributes to their damage too#yellow is just a creature#blue is self explanatory. made it look aquatic with the flower looking lotus like and having sorta? amphibian lookin features?#because you know. they can be in both land and water#I wanted the flowers to all look different but also make them all have 5 petals#to have that be one of the things all pikmin share#also I made purples have umbels because haha get it carrot#idk man I’m just messing around and looking things up I’m not a biology expert#oh wait yeah I made yellow a bit shorter and made the eyes round to kinda match with white?? idk why it’s just cute ig#and Yes I know yellows are the best at digging right now but I like p2 white pikmin lore ok? ok 👍#pikmin#pikmin game

WE GOT TURTLE BEANS AND LOVES LIES BLEEDING IN THE GARDEN FOLKS
#i really wish the root veggies had taken but it's prolly gonna be a while of topsoil building before that's viable in ground#meantime gonna have to be happy with the kales kicking up over winter and hopefully#the cardoon and blackberry bushes will mature by next fall#if the amaranth can do the same and we can collect some black beans to dry before winter fully sets in#we'll be good to go#god we're so close.......#i wonder how I would make large gardening sacks for roots. maybe course-weave muslin canvas? i could see if someone will sell me a full bolt#then i could make some sack cloth garden beds for roots to bury in compose for topsoil#the fabric can decompose with the compost and in the meanwhile will contain the soil inside enough to establish some root sets

Ngl while playing thru Indigo Disk I kept expecting that, like, after we beat him Kieran’s hair would fall out of its scrunchie dramatically and go back to how it looked in Teal Mask or something. I just think it would’ve been REALLY funny especially if he put it back up right after

Revenge is a dish best served cold or warm or hot it doesnt matter i am just a very very very VERY avid supporter of revenge.
An eye for an eye makes the whole worl-- WHO CARES? WHO CARREESSS about an eye when that person burned your entire body? Who cares about an eye when their words and actions skinned you alive? Who gives a shit.
Revenge is a dish that is delicious and healthy no matter what kind ♡

Roots
I've been putting off digging the carrots (because the beans and the tomatoes are visible, so they've been monopolizing my attention). This morning's pleasantly cool temps, however, motivated me to get my butt out in the garden and grab a shovel. Also a hoe, because in the last month the garden has gone from almost-weed-free to knee-deep-in-weeds. How - does that happen? so quickly?
Anyhow. I hoed two raised beds, got fatigued depressingly quickly, then grabbed the shovel. I dug potatoes, just enough for a meal or two, then three sections of carrots. We plant in raised beds about 8x4 feet, I had two beds of carrots and two single rows of them that I shoved in beside other veg. The carrot harvest was DISAPPOINTING. The "red Samuri" seed hardly produced anything. About a handful, I am not kidding, for the whole bed, 32 linear feet of carrots. Also, one of them decided to make the leap from biennial to annual, and put up a flower. Carrot flowers, you may already be aware, look exactly like queen anne's lace. The orange carrots did better, but certainly not record-breaking.
At that point, I realized my son was overdue for getting up for school. He generally gets up with his alarm, but . . I ran back inside and rousted him. Back in the garden I finished up with carrots, put the shovel away, thought about the date for a minute (it's mid-September - shouldn't the sweet potatoes be ready?) and grabbed the shovel again.
Digging sweet potatoes is a chore in that the vines are so ridiculously abundant and it can be hard to remember exactly where I planted the roots. I eventually found the source of the vines and started digging a good 15 inches (37 cm?) away so I didn't chop any of them in half. A few minutes of digging revealed two large and 2-3 small ones, dark purple. I planted purple and orange this year.

I sprayed the whole basketful vigorously with the hose, then set them on the porch to drain. Maybe I should dig the beets, too? Hmm. These garden hods are worth their weight in gold; I love them. I wish I could dig clams some day!
I don't know if the carrot issue was with the variety or the company that sold them - anybody have any recs for reliable red or purple carrots?
Well. Many joyful and tasty roots. Happy fall, y'all!

Bugtown is bustling asf today because i gave em a good water (they love and hate watering day but!!! They've been bribed with some fresh moss that was ready to harvest.
This is definitely the tank at its prettiest, i love when they have enough real greens,, but goodness. They're hasty gardeners, this batch of moss probably won't last the night!!
#isopods#isoposting#dont worry i give them LOTS of green veggies to get em their vitamins.#hella root veg too#mostly carrots and potato skins#lately we've been in a cycle where they breed too much so i give them more calcium so they feel comfortable to breed MORE#but its ok we have had minimal deaths and they aren't always out on the surface(s) this much#they just can't be in the dirt when the water is settling yk??#bugs#gotta love em

why are we as a society so hung up on tomatoes being technically fruits not vegetables, when that’s true of most of what we consider vegetables? much to think about
#like why aren’t people out there arguing the semantics of peppers being considered veggies#they’re fruits too#only like leaves roots and stems are considered veggies
