in the morning after there was a different aura surrounding both of you. the monkey king seemed to be annoyed by something he couldn't put his finger on, while you were behaving more introspective, as if your mind was so full that you couldn't escape from it even if for seconds.

sometimes you would feel like losing it, fantasizing on being even more intimate with him or touching him in a less innocent way – dear lord, he couldn't imagine the absurdities that inhabited your mind even if he tried. which was good! who knows what kind of reaction he'd have if he knew just how much you wanted him to have his way with you?

poor thing, you needed to do something as soon as possible. before your unbridled passion for him could consume you entirely. then, with that resolved, you could put your efforts into overcoming your feelings. it was ridiculous to even imagine that the sun wukong would reciprocate you.

a few days later, when your relationship with him finally seemed to be less awkward, you saw the perfect opportunity in front of your eyes. and took it.

you two were stargazing while chatting about anything and everything like you used to do, and it was like the things had never changed between the two of you. being able to hear that boisterous laugh again warmed your silly little heart – those pointy canines of him were terribly adorable so what could you do?

on that night specially his gaze towards you seemed to be sweeter than normal. he would also stop and stare whenever a loud laugh came out of your mouth, which was kind of strange from your perception. impossible.

you needed to take action and you did.

without any warnings you then started talking about how you ended up becoming attached to him regardless of his arrogant nature and, as if the "i fell in love with you" wasn't shocking enough, you went even further by ending the lengthy confession with a conformed "i'm determined to get over it".

you would definitely be rejected by him anyway, so why not get that out of your way? it would be even easier to forget him once you parted ways. perfect plan!

with a baffled tone to his voice, sun wukong promptly confronted "why would you get over it?" he forced a scandalous laugh, trying to feel more like himself. "so you're not even going to try to court me? now that's weirder than you just confessing your feelings to me." of course he would end by joking his way out.

how dare him?

your usually relaxed eyes were now fully open in surprise "so you want me to court you? that's a good one!" you let out a hearty laugh, not believing your ears or the audacity of him. "if i already know that i don't stand a chance then why should i try?" that was obvious, wasn't it? well, maybe not for him and his big ego.

his eyes gleamed, as if challenged by your words. sun wukong approached his face close enough to mix in your breathing and with a suggestive whisper he declared "heh, i only thought you were bold enough to lure me in..." his nails brushed slitghly over your exposed arm, causing a deliciously chilling sensation. you felt your legs go weak as a giggle reached your ears.

what's gotten into him? where did that came from?

even though your heart almost gave in to desire, you remained firm in your decision. that would be better. sun wukong was obviously making a fool of you, even if both his sultry gaze and provocative touch tried to make you believe otherwise – in your defense he seemed too flirtatious, like he'd never been before.

the next day the embarrassment was so much that you choose to act as if nothing happened, as if his touch wasn't ghosting over your wrist since the night before when with a sudden grip he tried to stop you from leaving him behind. you tried your best to hide how shaken you've been, not wanting to put any distance towards sun wukong who, somehow, seemed to be restless since that fatidic event. you couldn't and wouldn't go back on your plan – too prideful –, but he sure made you think on changing it...

without any discretion, he would analyze your behavior constantly while searching for any glimpse of what've been confessed by you. his eyes started to gravitate towards your figure more than he would like to admit, as if he was under some kind of spell.

whenever you caught him staring he would try to appear as indifferent as you appeared to him. his ego seemed to be hurt and it was honestly funny to think that it could be because of you. at first you were weirded out by wukong's behavior but now you could only be amused by his reactions.

"i may not be the smartest person out there, but i have a feeling that you've been staring at me quite a lot lately." unfortunately for his pride, that's how the first conversation related to that topic began. "may i ask what do you want from me, almighty monkey king?"

now that was bold of you. too bold for his liking. bold in an annoyingly enticing way. your lazy eyes were so full of expectation and need that it made his insides turn, oh, you still wanted him so bad! he just knew it.

now he was fully determined to make you regret on saying that you would get over him. just you wait and see.

I wanna talk about the MV of Frieren 2nd OP song Haru (which surprisingly doesn't mean Spring (春) but Sunny (晴る)) Almost missing out this MV because it's not done with original Frieren AMV just like the first OP. But someone recommended to watch it anyway and I did. And DAMN IT'S SAD. AND HEAVY.

The story itself is pretty straightforward and easy to understand once you finish the entire MV. The fun part comes from the Youtube comments. There are several interesting insights about the MV, the song itself, and the relationship with Frieren series. After digging and crosschecking here and there plus some thinking, few points I'd like to bring up are:

Relation to Sousou no Frieren

This. Enough said.

On more detailed note, 晴れる (Hareru) means to clear up, to stop raining, to be sunny. Himmel in German means heaven. So it's basically turning into "clear heaven/sky"

You know Himmel's presence was so big and brought hope wherever he and his party was. Even in the Demon King era, his heroism and kindness brought light the people's life. Even now, long after he's gone, Frieren keeps meeting people who are directly or indirectly impacted by his actions, even for the smallest things like helping around the village. It was enough to cheer everyone he comes across.

I was thinking of how Serie and Frieren could end up so different despite being the same race as elves with unprecedented talent for magic and similar rather cold distant personality. Perhaps I'll talk in another post about it but for me, I feel like one of the biggest differences is that Frieren got to meet Himmel. Long after Flamme died, Serie is basically still alone at the top despite having more disciples, while Frieren meets Himmel and through him meet the others and then she walks the same path as them. Even after the two people she ever cares about die, Frieren's sky becomes clear as she learns about her own feelings and what should really be treasured in human limited time versus her own limitless one. Or at least that's how I interpret the anime.

The song itself

The lyrics often mention of how beyond the rain pouring down from the clouds, the sky up above is sunny. Beyond pain, there is peace. It's fitting the whole "clear (up the) sky" theme.

I've listened to a few Yorushika's songs before Haru, and while their songs are kinda hit and miss for my taste, I enjoy Haru a lot. And I didn't know that wordplay is Yorushika's specialty. After looking at some of their songs, I found out they like switching kanji of the titles so that the titles hold double meanings.

And honestly, whenever I picture "spring", I always pair it with "clear sky." Even though rains do fall in spring too, I always go with sunny. This whole kanji switch is genius, ngl.

Once I knew that one of the member, n-buna, is a Vocaloid composer, I was like "Huh. No wonder." Sometimes wildest profound lines do come out from Vocaloid songs.

The MV in general

The MV itself is straightfoward. The father is unaware he's dead. The son has been alone all these times. But still, the wish to live in a world of sunny days free of war and loss just like back in the day goes on.

An interesting top comment theorizes the wall here resembles the Western Wall in Jerusalem, while the tree with flowers shown in the last seconds looks like the olive tree. Olive tree means peace and reconciliation. The metaphor "offer an olive branch" means "wanting to end the quarrel and disagreement." Olive branch is present in the emblem of Israel while olive tree is considered as a national symbol for Palestinians. As of this writing I haven't found any official confirmation for those theories. But either way, this is clearly about living in war state-something that is unfortunately ever-present in the world.

I personally think that the release timing, the choice of story and certain elements in it like the wall, the plant and the sea, all make the MV extremely relevant to the genocide and occupation of Gaza now, whether it's actually intentional or not.

The director of the MV, Kohta Morie, tweeted something along the line of 'I present this work to those who did not have the chance to be "sunny."' Incredibly sad, when you think about it.

ok im not even 90 yet but ive decided picto is fun as hell!!!! compared to the other casters and most other jobs in general i like that it feels a little more freeform. plus its got a bunch of fun little things that make it enjoyable; party buff, BIG leylines, and that little bit of extra movement speed after your gap closer (which doesnt even need a target. So i saw the crack pair of isshin and enji plus ichigo as a enji's step son, so i was giggling about it because

1. The todoroki siblings might dislike or hate both of their fathers, however there is ichigo who is now their father figure, and is trying to chamge both of them for the better or will beat them up(exemple touya or shoto training and ichigo will fight both isshin and enji)

2. Given that, in certain circumstances where they need an adult 10/10 they would first call ichigo to help with their trouble, like if shoto were to call someone in this AU he is 100% calling ichigo because he trusts ichigo more than both of his dads

A fiddlehead is just the young shoot of any edible fern before it unfurls! Clan cats don't have a particular word for this, because they are obligate carnivores and don't collect them for food like humans do.

I hope he makes a mint from this (he won't), because it is a beautiful song. I wholeheartedly agree: you don't ever want to lose her. [7]

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Slightly surreal to hear Flo Milli in such soft focus. Babyface Ray and 42 Dugg used this Jin Kirigaya loop the way they tend to use '80s R&B of its ilk, a gleaming counterpoint to the grime of their raps; Flo Milli plays it straight but subverts her own reputation. If she didn't sound so poised here, it'd be easy to write this off as a crass bit of pop crossover. Instead, it comes off as a bit of a flex, a demonstration that she can be nearly as compelling when her taunts are buried under layers of gloss. [7]

Dave Moore: Finding a midpoint between hypertrap drone and the cheesy demo instrumental for a new DAW plugin isn't a bad look for Flo Milli, whose best track from last year was kinda her worst: PG-13 "BGC," which would have sounded great soundtracking the kind of teen sex comedy they stopped making at least a decade ago. But her personality doesn't quite work for modal rap. I hate to say that she should be selling out harder, but fake suits her. [5]

Taylor Alatorre: Not the complete abdication to romantic and sexual bliss that it might seem at first -- the title is an implicit threat, after all, and the secondhand beat carries the air of something unsettled, as if searching for a steady focal point that just isn't there. Flo Milli doesn't prod at these nuances because she doesn't need to, and also because it would eat up too much of the two-minute runtime if she tried. [6]

Katherine St. Asaph: The insistent repetition of "tell me you'll never want to lose me" -- I measured, and the line makes up about one-quarter of this 2:07 song -- lends "Never Lose Me" a palpable possessiveness that's a touch Fatal Attraction, in a good way with interesting subtext. Between this and "Kill Bill" -- maybe add in various reappraisals of that film and similar -- we've got ourselves enough for a trendpiece! [7]

Leah Isobel: Flo Milli is irrepressible; even when she's drafted into this glittering dreamscape, she finds ways to push her voice outward, away from the aqueous sensuality of the piano and toward the straightfoward throb of the drum track underneath. It's nice! And a little awkward. [6]

Ian Mathers: There's enough sustain on the piano that it feels warm, layered, almost humming. For an interlude (sorry, TikTok) length track like this, something that just sounds good like that, plus a pretty basic beat and a winning/punchline-dense performance on top, are really all you need.  [8]

hey! i've been meaning to get back into the sonic the hedgehog, and since you have a pretty good handle on the games, i'd thought i'd ask which game you'd recommend for someone who's only had experience with Sonic 2 and S3&K? i can only count riders as one of the more story-oriented games i've played, but i know there's more out there and would love to hear your opinion on what'd be fun to just dive into :3

Ah, the eternal question I simply can't find an answer to ���� I don't know why it's much easier for me to help people get into Megaman, Metroid or Castlevania than the series I grew up with lmao

Sonic 1: playing the series in chronological order is always a valid option, and since you are familiar with S2 and 3&K, why not complete the Classics with the original one? Its biggest hurdle is that it suffers from a noticeable case of Early Installment Weirdness: no Spin Dash (in the original version, it was put in nearly every subsequient re-release), 3 acts instead of 2, and generally speaking a much more platform-y level design. But I have fun replaying it every June 23rd, I think it's still a solid game that was perfectly designed to be mastered.

Sonic Adventure: my personal first Sonic game. I love it to death despite its flaws :P Sonic's story is, for me, peak 3D Sonic with spacious and complex level design, graphics and music are on point, the plot is moderately engaging... yeah the other characters range from "they're there" to "i hate everything you stand for", but personally I don't find them too intrusive. I recommend the PC version (either 2004 or Steam, I have the former) with mods that "Dreamcastify" it and fix some of its issues; alternatively, the Gamecube version of Sonic Adventure DX is a good compromise. Do not play the vanilla Steam version or anything that came after it.

Sonic Adventure 2: everyone else's first Sonic game lmao. If you found SA1 too bloated, or the cutscenes too ridiculous, or the hub world too annoying, SA2 fixes all of this. It's a game that was meant to be mastered, thanks to its introduction of the ranking system. It's also the game that introduced fandom blorbos Shadow and Rouge! The Battle remaster also came out on Steam.

Sonic Heroes: the one game designed to introduce newcomers to the series! A flawed game, even more bloated than SA1, that I nonetheless like for the bright aesthetic, fresh soundtrack, and richness of level design, my second favorite after SA1. I recommend the Gamecube version, as it's the least buggy of the bunch.

Sonic Colors: I was actually going to recommend either Unleashed or Generations when it comes to Boost games, but the former is rather complex and divisive, and the latter is mostly a "best of" of the series from S1 to Colors. I haven't played Colors myself, but it looks to me that it was meant to 1) introduce another wave of newcomers, and 2) fix the complaints that Unleashed received at the time. Colors is a pretty simple game with unintrusive gimmicks, mostly about Boosting, platforming, and exploring the levels thanks to the Wisps. Either find the original Wii version, or try the recent Ultimate remaster.

Sonic Mania: technically, this is a love letter to the Classic series (and a few nods to more minor games, too), but it builds up on 3&K's foundations and at its core is a solid, well-designed, charming Classic game. With the Plus DLC, you can play up to 5 different characters!

the Advance trilogy: very cute games that put a modern spin on the 2D formula. Advance 1 is a simple, straightfoward 2D game, with its most memorable feature being that you can play as Amy and her gameplay style is very unique. Advance 2 is all about building and mantaining speed in levels that resemble rollercoasters, and it introduced Cream, the Goddess of Destruction. Advance 3 is all about teamwork, as you combine two characters to get an unique way to traverse levels. You're bound to like at least one :)

the Rush duology: made by the same devs of the Advance games, these ones are technically the first Boost games, but in 2D. They were my shit when I was a kid lmao. They're fast, stylish and fun! And they introduced Blaze :>

What I was theorizing is that her role would've been a secondary antagonist to Guts, someone who wants to kill Griffith herself, and who sort of makes Guts realize that his feelings about revenge are more complicated and not straightfoward. He wants to kill Griffith himself, but is there more to him not wanting Casca to kill him? It would also be a good embodiment of revenge as self-destruction, as Casca takes up the revenge mantle while Guts waffles about it. Plus you could get a good scene where Casca swoops in for a kill and Guts is the one to stop her.

Of course that was if Casca went apostle on Elfhelm. If it happens now it would probably be at the climax, and tbh I'm not sure what purpose that could serve plot-wise, beyond calling up the Godhand to set the stage for a confrontation of sorts, and vengeful apostle Casca maybe killing Griff at a vulnerable moment (eg after he kills Guts), or being a timely distraction, or getting killed to piss Guts off lol.

Oh plus I was thinking Casca would hate Guts too under these circumstances, remembering how he treated her, how he ditched her to pursue Griffith, etc. At the very least he'd still be an object of fear and resentment. So they could clash directly too. I'm also very into the idea of Guts killing Griffith, and then Casca killing Guts, a la the wolves when he was a kid, eg.

Thematically it could still work as a dark counterpoint to Guts potentially, and I dig the idea of Casca living on as a new Zodd the Immortal esque figure - the theory that she's named after a fantasy book about the dude who stabbed Jesus on the cross and was then cursed to roam the earth as an immortal definitely intrigues me there lol, even if it is just coincidence, or irrelevant to Miura taking name inspiration.

I don't think much focus would be on her mentality, but like all apostles sacrificing Moonbaby would make her darker and more fucked up and monstrous. Considering some of the gender essentialism that goes into her character, maybe she'd go full ruthless obsessive bloodlusty type, as Miura seems to associate her softening to her femininity, and sacrificing a baby would probably get rid of that according to that kind of logic lol.

Color Thumbnailing Guide

people have expressed interest in knowing how i do my color thumbnails, which i whip out EXTREMELY fast, so i’m writing up this little guide to talk about it. It’s a pretty simple and straightfoward process so it won’t be a long writeup, but i’ve got a lot of images. 

Anyway here goes nothing.

First things first, you need a sketch. I like to keep my sketch somewhere in the warm purple range because purple looks decently overlaid on both warm colors and cool colors. 

I set my sketches on a multiply layer and lower the opacity pretty low, because you dont want the color from your sketch weighing too heavily in the overall palette. 

Block in your ‘local colors’ at a low opacity. i like to keep a lot of atmosphere in my drawings when I can so the further back stuff gets the more transparent it gets. You want a low opacity so whatever you end up using as a base color tints it well enough 

I’ve got the papers and whatnot on a different later because i’m planning to hue shift those a bit as I go, since whites are tricky I want to be able to adjust them to match the background as needed.

Now here it is with the background color on

You can see how immediately this shifts the local colors a ton. That’s what you want.

Now you need a light source (at least one, you can have as many as you want obviously) and some shadows. I put the lights and shadows each on one separate layer.

here I’m doing the light in yellow and the shadows in blue because that’s just a color combo I lean to a lot, but play around with the colors. You’d end up being surprised about what color combos will work together well. I also just painted in a bit of a lighter patch in the background to give some more depth to the color. 

 Adjust the blending layer for your highlights and shadows. For the most part my shadows will be on either multiply or just normal, and either color dodge or add for the lighting. Just fuck around and play with blending modes and opacity until you find something you like.

Now, making new color thumbnails from this is as simple as locking the opacity on your highlight and shadow layers to recolor them, changing the blending modes, and using hue/saturation/brightness adjustments on the background layer 

Here’s three new thumbnails made by only change the highlights/shadows/background color. there are slight adjustments made to the hue of the paper layer, but that’s it. The local colors are entirely unchanged.

You can get a lot of mileage out of doing just this! But there’s also a bunch of other really simple color adjusting you can do with gradient maps. So let’s take a look at that.

I’m also gonna switch out my light sources, and show you how easy it is to switch that around with this method of working too

Okay, new highlights and shadow pattern. Also added the sort of starburst light in the background there just to give some more depth to the image. The group there at the bottom is the old shadows and highlights just there for posterity.

I also duplicated the local colors to make them a little bit more opaque, because I’m gonna be manually adjusting them a little bit more for this set of thumbnails instead of just relying on the ambient background color to harmonize.

Here’s this with the highlights and shadows in their appropriate blending modes.

Here it is with the light and shadows turned off, plus i’ve doubled the flats. 

Now, what i’m going to do is use a gradient map and adjust the colors on the flats

I’m making them blue to match the general feel of this palette

I’ve lowered the opacity on the gradient map layer, so now the flats have a much bluer twinge to them, but the value hierarchy is still the same. This is a really great way to make your colors more harmonious overall. 

Here’s a few more examples of thumbnails done in this manner. You can see what colors i went with for the gradient map in the layer menu on the side. play around a lot! try new things! Make a ton just fucking around. quantity is always good.

i want to show my stepmom "an evening with tim heidecker" because i know she'll get the joke and laugh at it. but in order for anyone to get anything out of that, they need to have a basis of his anti-humor. and that's, like, fine if you're in your teens-early 30s because tim & eric style humor is pretty true to a lot of internet humor.

it's also a difficult thing to convey to older gen xers

for one thing it's weird to send your step parent "you would like this, but here are some skits you should watch to get a sense of his deal". seems like a lot of commitment for watching like an hour of standup.

plus what would i even show her lmfao? i personally think, like, the "it's spaghett" skit is a good one, since it's a pretty straightfoward riff on prank shows. but a lot of tim and eric skits are very "what the entire hell is this" to older people.

so that's a dilemma

sometimes i dislike how dd acts of mulder bc i think he can be unexpressive but then i remember he's acting of a man, people in our society are demanded to be stoic and unemotional. plus his dad, that was so distant emotionally and probably expected the same. besides i think that this added more to mulder's character too: he doesn't care about expressing his emotions, he'll go straightfoward to find a solution. only when he can't take them anymore he explodes (his mother's death for example).

i still think he could be more expressive but the decisions seem to be appropiate.

I think Mulder is a very emotional man who wears his emotions on his sleeve. I agree that his parents probably expected him to be proper and not show his feelings, especially after his sister disappeared.

What I love about DD's acting is how subtle it is. His voice will crack or he'll do those sad puppy eyes. Many actors will do too much because they don't trust they can convey these micro expressions. I mean yeah, there may be moments where he could have done more but that's true of any actor. I really love the way David portrays Mulder.
