How do you feel about Christmas cracker jokes? Greg: You'd expect me to say they're awful, or be angry about them. But I quite like going through the motions and the family reading them out! Alex: I like the challenge of making them funny. I'm going to say something slightly arrogant: I will back myself in a family situation, even with a bad joke, to make it funny. I reckon comedians can still deliver it. I'll do it, whatever it takes.

Alex, you write the jokes for the Taskmaster Christmas crackers. What's the secret? Alex: You just write something that is really stupid and gets a groan. A groan is your friend. It's things like, which actor quenches your thirst the most? Leonardo DiCapri Sun. Greg: I mean, it's quite good. Alex: What about Danny DeVimto? Greg: I don't mind that, either.

What are your Christmas traditions? Greg: There's a tradition in my family that I believe to be barbaric. The rule is you can open gifts from Father Christmas in the morning, but all other gifts cannot be opened until the last dish has been washed following Christmas dinner. Alex: Whoa, not even after the meal? Greg: Nothing. Not until everything's been washed and everyone's sat down. I see the torture in my nieces' faces. It was almost the ruination of Christmas for me as a child.

Alex: We have a genuine tradition, where after dinner there's one pineapple, and everyone guesses the amount of leaves on the top of it. The oldest person in the household has to count the leaves. Greg: What a surprise that your family would have a weird tradition that no one else in the whole country does. Alex: They keep going. They get really small. You're looking at triple figures. You're looking at 100-plus. Greg: So in the Horne household, it's like, "Oh, gather round, now we're going to count the leaves on a pineapple?" It's like you're lost in some Victorian time loop. Alex: Well, we're not the ones banning our children from opening presents until it's dark...

i will never get over how genuinely fucked the tranquil are consistently treated throughout the dragon age games. like i know it's the Point. but. holy fuck.

the way they're treated as "not-quite-people", the way they're constantly put to the side, ignored, abused, and exploited for profit, the way they're killed over and over, especially in inquisiton, and the way it feels so brushed over. and it never really feels like the player reaction is Enough for what is going on in any situation surrounding them.

I find the demonization of Demeter in supposedly feminist retellings of the Hades and Persephone story thoroughly fascinating because she was actually the myth's protagonist

A lot of retellings focus on the "lovebirds" but the myth was moreso focused on Demeter's quest to bring her daughter home than any romance they might've had. In fact, the original source material is entitled "Homeric Hymn to Demeter"

It followed the goddess of harvest searching desperately for the whereabouts of her kidnapped daughter, enlisting the help of deities and mortals alike along the way, and eventually forcing Zeus himself to come to a compromise through sheer stubborness and pure love for her child

An interpretation I really like is that the tale is an allegory for mothers in Ancient Greece whose daughters were taken away from them to be married off without them having any say in the matter

Putting all that aside, I'm really curious as to what prompted people to portray Demeter as a control freak who doesn't want to see her daughter happy with the one she loves when originally, she was simply a mother who fought tooth and nail to see her Persephone returned to her

[how do you feel about your individual game lately? seems like you might’ve been trending in the right direction — how do you feel like you’ve been playing recently?] yeah, i think, um … i mean, i think december’s been trending in the right way. um, definitely feeling better, feeling better. um — thirty-five games in … you wanna try to get on a roll here. and what’s exciting is we have a whole new year coming soon, so. um, yeah, i can move on and try to build off of it and get excited for the new year.  [what’s the process been like coming back from the surgery? it’s something you’ve never had to do before, right?] yeah, i mean (brief unintelligible mumble) it’s been, you know, five — i don’t know, five months since the surgery, so, it’s been a long time, but, i mean (shrugs) still, without an off-season it’s definitely (laughs) definitely — still, you still don’t feel great without an off-season, and trying to adapt, and then you’re trying to play catch-up, and then you’re trying to forget about the catching up, and try to focus on a new page, so — i’m happy that december’s been trending in the right direction, and i’ll try to turn the page going into the new year.
