I seriously plundered the tumblr hipster blogs circa 2013 for this story, lads, let me tell you!! I’m not sure I described very well the fashions everyone in this story is wearing lest I fall into Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way territory but these are the sorts of images I had in mind for each of the characters who have made an appearance so far (sorry in advance for the potato quality of some of these images… also just in case it needs to be said, the hair & skin colors of these clothing/hairstyle models may not necessarily reflect those of the Hadesgame versions of these characters, which are the versions I’m working with in this story):

ZAGREUS

Recently Super Groupies came out with this literal Zagreus inspired zipper jacket… it only came out this year but I can still see someone in the 2010s wearing something like it so I just described him as having this exact jacket LOL. I imagined him arranging it a bit differently than the model however, instead he wears it with black skinny jeans and colorful high top converse shoes.

It’s actually really easy to imagine Zagreus as your typical millennial/gen Z college kid without too many alterations…

just look at these boys with their extremely Zagreus-looking hairstyles haha! The boy wearing blue in particular was the inspiration for Zag having those chunky square-cut diamond earrings… it’s cute to imagine them poking out from under one of those knitted caps!

ACHILLES

I like to imagine that the Achilles of this story has a bit of a gender-fluid/genderless approach to fashion, so I picture him wearing a lot of the things that were popular with hipsters of all genders, such as flannel, low-cut t-shirts & tank tops, long necklaces, chunky/slouchy cardigan sweaters, skinny jeans, and wide-brimmed hats. He wears his hair long or ties it up into a messy bun.

At home both he & Patroclus do a bit of the athleisure thing, so especially pretty soon he’s gonna be in crop/tank tops and sweatpants a lot (or in nothing at all haha!!!)

PATROCLUS

Idk I think I just see Pat as that sort of natural class-act who can wear a plain t-shirt or a band collar shirt with a nice pair of slacks and dressy shoes and look ultra sophisticated without even trying. Maybe he does that 2010s thing of wearing an unbuttoned vest over the shirt or he’ll borrow a pair of suspenders from the “2010s Recession Hipster Dude Starter Pack” every once in a while, but overall he doesn’t need much (but also imagine he’s holding a book wherever he is lol.)

Also of course, that full beard and man-bun look of the era is so quintessential and fits him perfectly!

THANATOS

I actually lived in Japan for all of the 2010s haha so I pictured Than more like the sort of young men I would sometimes see around Tokyo with multiple layers of long, knee/ankle-length cardigan robes/jackets, and those wide, billowing pants in perhaps a parachute or bontan style.

As for the gorget necklace… you know how sometimes you find a cool accessory in a vintage shop or whatever and you’re like “I am going to make this thing my entire personality for the next year”? hahaha yeah that’s Than here. Something gold or brass like the top picture that he wears under his black collared shirts, like the bottom picture.

like ive seen before, on their website, their 2019 annual review also mentions the use of work tasters - that set these young men up with possible job/intern opportunities after they've graduated from key4life’s programmes. this is a really good scheme - getting these men out of their previous environments - where all the knife crime is. this focus on their future, in the programme, makes me think I should definitely strive to show the future of their life, with key4life over the knife option. 

I also loved the colour scheme of this - muted yet still recognisably them - I think this feels way more sophisticated than there more neon green and solid/screen black. so, I think ill use these as my colours for the billboard etc. - hopefully these work well in my setting! i also love there use of lines and boxes in the infographic above - reflecting their logo. could I do this in my billboard? to help show their different options/ for a future? 

overall, this was useful to look at - had a lot of information in it! and I love the muted colour scheme!

The Vinyl of the Day is ‘Dead Man’s Party’ by Oingo Boingo, 1985. Before Danny Elfman became THE movie and television soundtrack guy, he had a very successful rock career as head man of Oingo Boingo, one of the most interesting pop-punk bands of the 80s. Boingo actually began in 1972 as a performance art group, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, led by Danny’s older brother Richard - but when Richard left to pursue a filmmaking career, Danny took over and eventually shifted the band over to experimental post-punk, pop-punk, big-band, rock… and whatever other description you’d like to throw into the mix. By 1980 the band had coalesced into an octet, and early success for the group came with the song “Only a Lad” from their eponymous EP. The song aired frequently in Los Angeles on KROQ-FM and complemented the station’s then-unusual new wave format. Although their sound was classified as new wave and was compared to Devo, Oingo Boingo defied easy categorization. Their use of exotic percussion, a three-piece horn section, unconventional scales and harmony and surrealistic imagery was an unusual combination. Whatever it was, the band’s sound became hugely popular in the L.A. music scene, with well-selling records and sold-out concerts. 

‘Dead Man’s Party’ was Boingo’s masterpiece, shifting their sound into a more straightforward pop-new wave sound, and showcasing what would become their biggest selling song “Weird Science”, the title track of the John Hughes film - although the song itself was never an accurate representation of the band’s music, and even Danny Elfman wasn’t a big fan of it. Elfman had long felt that the song, a more commercial musical style than most the band’s previous releases at the time, was “not really a part of [the band’s] repertoire” - Wikipedia.

But otherwise, ‘Dead Man’s Party’ is a fantastic high-energy mix from top to bottom; this was the “OB goes Top 40” album, which they managed to pull off without losing their signature sound and tongue-in-cheek macabre. What they’ve lost in some of the early edginess they more than compensate with a mature, fat horn section. If you’re a fan of Danny Elfman, and 80s music - and you haven’t heard Oingo Boingo, THIS is the album you NEED in your music collection.

Returning after a two-year recording hiatus (during which bandleader Danny Elfman recorded a solo album), Oingo Boingo forsook the excesses of smart-aleck humor and quirky production that had led critics almost universally to dismiss the band’s first four albums. The sound is still maybe just a bit too uptight and over-determined, but the horn charts are more focused and sophisticated, and Elfman has matured considerably as a lyricist. Alongside such typically oddball fare as the title track and a surprise hit song called “Weird Science” are the faintly paranoid “Just Another Day” and the frankly romantic “Stay,” as well as a glorious Motown tribute called “Help Me.” But “Weird Science” is what really brings things to a close with a bang – though it reverts somewhat to the band’s earlier indulgence in wacka-wacka sound effects and willfully crazy production technique, it’s also one of Boingo’s most satisfying pop songs ever. Overall, this is perhaps the first Oingo Boingo album to hang together really well as a whole. Recommended.

1 “I adore watching people,” Lisa Snart proclaimed, peering through her glasses at the crowd that bustled all around them, waiting for the lights to dim properly and for the play to begin. “In fact, it is often more satisfying than the plays you drag me here for.”

They were at St James’ Theatre on King Street, a favourite of Lisa’s despite her protestations to the contrary. She liked the ostentatious Greek columns of the façade and the fact that the theatre had been built with the dress circle and boxes nearer to the stage than at any other in London. She liked being close to the action – though not so close that she’d brave the stalls without a strong incentive.

It had been many years since they’d last been here. Their livelihood had seen them travelling the continent and abroad for almost a decade and it was only recently that they had returned to Albion and taken rooms in London. St James’ had changed hands since last they were here.

This particular night they had paid the £4 for one of the private boxes, an indulgence after the success of their last venture on the continent. Their box was furnished with outer curtains of figured cherry red silk, and inner curtains of Madras muslin. Inside, the panels of the box were in gold, pale green, and cream colour. Overall, it produced a sophisticated air that Leonard appreciated.

It was not enough that they should be enjoying this opulence; the true goal was that other people should see them doing so. That Lisa had brought with her the finest fashions of Paris when they crossed the Strait of Dover only enhanced the spectacle.

Leonard would dutifully pick them out of the crowd, make an appropriate comment and then go back to watching the show.

“Look at that, Lenny.” Leonard raised an eyebrow at her as she pushed her pair of opera glasses his way with more than her usual fervour. “The boy over the way, at the back of the dress circle. He’s wearing a green carnation, though his dress is otherwise by the book. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in that hue. It can’t be natural.”

Leonard took up the glasses and followed her pointing finger to the other side of the dress circle. Indeed, there was a youth there sporting a dyed carnation in his buttonhole. “En vert.”

“En vert?” Lisa pursed her lips in thought. “Oh, I see. A French pun. Very clever. I suppose it has something to do with the playwright.”

“Wilde? Yes, I suppose so.” Leonard continued to study the lad. He was possessed of extraordinary personal beauty; Bartolini might have sculpted the gentle incarnadine bow of his lips and the peculiar dynamic quality of his eyes. “He’s always making a spectacle. I think the green carnation was à la mode while we were abroad.”

“Then the boy’s a few years out of fashion. Should we make his acquaintance?”

Leonard considered him. He was dressed fashionably enough despite the out of date buttonhole. If Leonard had to guess, taking in his age, appearance and dress, he’d place him as a student. Middle class. He didn’t seem to have a companion with him so either he was up from the country and didn’t know anyone, or he did have friends but this mission to the theatre was personal. In light of the carnation, Leonard suspected the latter. “He looks well off. I don’t suppose it could hurt. It might make an… interesting diversion from our usual routine.”

“We’ll look for him at intermission,” said Lisa, settling back in her seat and setting the glasses aside. “Buttonhole considered, I’ll let you take the lead on this one, brother dearest. I think you’ll have more luck.”

Leonard smile was languid. “Is that an admission of my superior skill?”

“No, it is an admission of your Uranian sympathies,” Lisa said, teasingly.

Leonard was about to retort when the stage curtains were drawn back on a morning-room, the first set of the main play. Lisa’s smug countenance was almost enough to make him shirk common etiquette and continue his riposte but then he thought better of it. It was the wrong kind of attention to be drawing to themselves.

On the stage, the manservant was arranging afternoon tea.

 In April 1909, Augustus had

assembled at Effingham a

compliment of six horses,

two vans, one cart, six children,

Arthur- a disastrous groom,

a stray boy,

a broken-down wagon,

Dorelia and her

younger sister Edie.

 The convoy moved off

to Epsom, Cambridge

and Norwich by July 1909.

 Augustus had a famous fist fight with Arthur given the groom's bad attitude

to leaving Cambridge.

 Augustus later fired him after the horses had begun to die off.

 In this unusually large

and rare drawing,

Augustus drew a fantasy of a

harmonious family group

with Ida and Dorelia.

 Ida had died tragically in March 1907.

The figure is not a portrait of Ida but is

John's recollection of her which explains its lack of liveliness.

 In 1908, John painted a large oil

of a family group comprising

Ida, Dorelia and children

which now hangs in

the Dublin City Gallery.
