Can I ask how much the cameos you got at the antiques store were? I've inherited an ENORMOUS cameo collection and don't even know where to start selling off the hundreds I don't want to keep.

The main factors in pricing cameos are a) what the setting is made of and b) the quality of the carving. More unusual subjects (ie not the standard lady in profile) will also add to value.

The prices I paid for the cameos I just posted don’t really reflect retail pricing, because I was buying a big batch of jewelry all at once at dealer prices. If you’re selling to a dealer, expect to get 1/3 to 1/2 of retail; if you decide to sell them yourself online, you can try for full retail pricing but expect it to take a long time.

Just to give you a sense of the possible range, I priced the largest cameo of the batch I posted, which is large and very well-carved and has an 18k setting, at $210. The smaller profile cameos in sterling and gold fill will be $40-60. The smallest coral-colored cameo is pressed glass in a brass setting (but it’s also Victorian), so I’ll price it around $25.

An Unlikely Girls' Day Out; Princess Minerva Seen With Fiancé's Ex

oh my god okay the weirdest thing happened at work today. Like this one wins 'weirdest thing that's happened to me while working in retail' and maybe even 'weirdest thing that's happened to me in general'. Like I'm not kidding this was straight up bizarre.

Okay so for those who don't know I work retail at a supermarket, specifically in the online shopping department. And one of my jobs is serving customers who want to collect their online grocery orders in-store rather than pay extra to have them delivered. So I'm outside, I've just finished serving a customer, and another car pulls up, so I take the order name and head inside to get this lady's shopping.

So I'm inside for maybe two minutes, right? Including the time it took me to walk from the collection point to the storage area, and the time it took me to walk back up with her shopping, I'm gone for maybe four minutes. Five tops. And I get back up to the collection point and I notice something lying on the ground on the pavement, right next to the parking bay.

(To explain the geography, the booth is at the side of the store, it consists of two parking spots one behind the other under a canopy, and there's a concrete walkway between the store and the parking spots that goes under the canopy and leads up to the main road behind the store, which itself is perpendicular to a shopping mall with the entrance facing the parking lot.)

So I get closer and I see this black thing lying on the ground, and I'm thinking, "Huh, is that, like, a bin bag? A really crumpled bin bag? That wasn't there five minutes ago, did someone drop a bin bag while I was inside?"

No, not a bin bag. I get close enough to see two distinct cups, and realise that it is, in fact, a bra.

Unworn - it still has the tags on. Victoria's Secret, the most notoriously overpriced store in the mall. Padded, with underwiring, with lace detail and diamanté on the straps. Expensive, definitely - I'm guessing in the range of £70 or more (over $90 in American money). I would NOT pay that much for a bra (the most I've paid for a bra is probably around £40, and the comfiest bra I own came in a pack of 3 for £25 and is in fact so unobtrusive I sometimes forget to take it off before I go to bed) but if I DID pay that much for a bra, I would NOT abandon it on a rain-soaked concrete walkway behind a supermarket.

I'm debating what to do about the bra - do I take a picture? Do I take it inside? Do I pretend not to see it? - when suddenly I hear screaming from the direction of the main road. I turn, slightly nervously, and see a guy barrelling along the walkway towards me at full tilt.

He looks to be between 30 and 45, with a full beard, and he's clutching a Victoria's Secret shopping bag to his chest. There are lacy bits spilling out the top. And, the most distinctive detail, he's screaming at the top of his lungs. I'm talking horror movie shrieking, like this guy sounds like he's being chased by a hook-handed man wearing a hockey-mask and armed with a chainsaw. There is no one else visible on the walkway.

And this guy sprints past me, snatches up the bra like a criminally-inclined cat swiping a fresh and crispy fish-stick out of a toddler's hand, and takes off in the direction of the mall. Doesn't bother putting the bra in his bag. It's flapping over his shoulder like a double-D lace and diamanté flag of mourning (presumably in honour of his dignity). He's still screaming.

And I'm left standing there, kind of unsure of what I just saw, and the customer gets out of her car and says, almost conversationally, "He was screaming for a while there." And I just have to serve this lady and act like this was a normal experience to have while at work at 5pm on a Saturday. I've had fish thrown at me by customers before, but this couldn't even be excused as an adult temper tantrum. This was, like I said, plain fucking bizarre.

Anyway, like, I don't necessarily like having stories from working in retail, but this one hits different, I think.

Hello everyone. I’d like to give y’all a quick recap of my time in retail this holiday season:

-two guests tried to fight one of our online order guys, and from what I heard they absolutely provoked him and started the beef by stealing things from the order he was picking for

-had two female guests try to fight ME because I had the audacity to ask them why they were opening boxes of makeup, and management pretty much did nothing about it bc they continued shopping and got to checkout like nothing happened. Then had a leader, who knows nothing about my dept, try to come over and say it was my fault for not saying the exact right thing to her

-had a leader complain to upper management that I “don’t follow direction�� bc she tried to come over to my dept, completely change the way we do shit by having me and my coworker switch areas (despite me telling her that our fucking SCHEDULE literally confirms that she is wrong, which she even later admitted herself???)

-had a lady throw boxes of makeup sponges at me

-had to tell multiple groups of very obviously rich and entitled teens/kids that is in fact extremely shitty to get the electric scooters meant for disabled guests and instead use them to race, play bumper cars, or stack three people in the basket on the front of it

Also. A VERY SPECIAL FUCK YOU to some specific customers. An hour after I got screamed at and threatened by the two customers I mentioned above, I guy walking through my area then drops an entire like 24 pack of topo Chico onto the floor and there’s fuckifn glass and water everywhere. Since I had just been screamed at and my leaders did nothing to have my back, I was little bit in a bad mood by the time the broken glass happened. Fucking sue me right?? Wel two guests who SAW ME cleaning up the glass (didn’t even fucking interact with me, I remember) and I guess thought that I didn’t look happy enough while I was doing that and decided to fucking FILE A COMPLAINT ABOUT IT.

Literally what fhe FUCK is wrong with you that you see a worker clearly having a very hard day, in the middle of holiday season, and you then think to yourself, “you know what? That worker needs to be smiling while being plowed in the ass by capitalism. And the fact that they’re not deriving physical, spiritual and sexual pleasure from their shitty retail job offends me so much I think I’ll have to complain about them and make it even worse.”

I even remember who might’ve complained too. Bc the guy that dropped the damn bottles in the first place didn’t even stick around to see it resolved (naturally) and so I didn’t even interact with any customers while cleaning it. HOWEVER, there was a couple standing nearby that when it happened, they immediately ran to his side like “oh man that’s so terrible you must be having a bad day? Are you alright? Do you need help?” So I guess fuck the person who actually has to clean this all up, no instead we should fawn over the jackass who broke all this glass and couldn’t even pretend he cared about it. Because that makes perfect fucking sense. Also love the casual implication that retail workers must be smiling deliriously all the fucking time and that I am not allowed to show any emotions besides that bc I am subhuman and not deserving of any grace or empathy. So dear customers who complained… I’m literally BEGGING the universe to fuck you over and YOU personally because if you truly had nothing better to do than scrutinize the facial expressions of a retail worker you never even interacted with, you are truly a waste of oxygen and are detrimental to society. I hope your nastiness comes back to bite you in the ass. I hope someone kicks YOU while you’re down and I hope it fucking sucks, you worthless piece of shit.

How long would the boys survive in retail?

James- Until he gets promoted to manager. Man’s ability to control a situation and lead makes him a better manager than most of the other managers. He would be climbing up the ranks so quickly.

Erik- Until he gets promoted to a Sales Representative. He’s amazing at calming dissatisfied customers and promoting products. He’s the used car salesman stereotype but actually effective. Especially with the ladies.

Sam- Not a goddamn week. He hates the entitlement of these people and how quick some are to get mad at the employees just doing their job. Plus he wouldn’t be satisfied in a “sit down for hours” job. He would quit so fast.

Matthew- A month at most. He did not escape his father yelling at him to be yelled at by humans. Maybe his more upbeat personality would endear him to some customers so he’s last more than Sam but after the fifth time being told to “grow up” he’d be gone.

Damien- A long time, though it wouldn’t be the best for him. His mind reading would make it easier to know what people want but he’d still do something wrong every once in a while. And if someone starts yelling at him, on the outside he seems stone faced to an unnerving degree, but on the inside, he is preparing himself for violence. And he’d probably accidentally say that to his coworkers and they’d be like “Are you okay??”. Plus I imagine all the thoughts at once wouldn’t be great for the mind reader. Maybe an online job is better.

PREVIOUSLY ON…

A being known as the Anti-Monitor has destroyed all but 5 of the universes in existence) with a single survivor on Earth-6 (Lady Quark) and Earth-Prime (Superboy) along for the ride)

Unfortunately, the process was unstable, meaning that time has merged (meaning mammoths and futuristic aliens are among modern skyscrapers) in the areas where the Earths are merged (which are called “Warp Zones”)

The Anti-Monitor’s last three attempts to destroy the multiverse have been thwarted (at the cost of many lives, including Supergirl and Earth-1’s Flash)

The Anti-Monitor’s fourth attempt brought the battle to the Dawn of Time, where the Anti-Monitor attempted to destroy the multiverse before it began, but his efforts were thwarted by the Spectre.

…or were they? As the pair fought for control, reality shattered around them and the assembled heroes!

[WARNING: Things are gonna get a bit weirder and more confusing than they’ve been to this point (and that’s saying something!) Furthermore, the jokes could be a bit thin here. I’m not certain if you’ll call that a bad thing or not]

We open on Clark Kent (Kal-L) as he wakes up from a bizarre dream. His wife Lois obviously let him sleep in…and redecorated? He heads to his “day job” as managing editor of the Daily Star. He enters his office and is about to get to work…

…when Perry White barges in and demands to know who’s in his office. That’s when Kal-L noticed Perry’s name on the office door. In barges Clark Kent (Superman) who apologizes to Perry and introduces his “Uncle Clark” before escorting Kal-L from the building.

On the top of the Daily Planet, they guess that somehow after the Spectre’s fight with the Anti-Monitor, they both were transported to Earth-1. They fly to the warp zone in New York…

…only it’s not there. What’s more, no one remembers there ever being anything weird in the area (though they do remember Supergirl’s death).

They then fly to Central City, where the Flash (who is still considered “missing”, as no one was present for his sacrifice) stored his cosmic treadmill…

…only to see the twin cities of Central City (home to Earth-1′s Flash) and Keystone City (home to Earth-2′s Flash) Sure enough, Jay Garrick (Earth-2′s Flash) and his wife Joan greet the pair. Joan doesn’t remember what happened, but Jay does. They fetch Kid Flash and start the cosmic treadmill and break through the dimensional barrier

…to a void; Earth-2 isn’t there! What’s more, Kal-L feels the void calling to him, like he belongs there…though the Flash doesn’t feel the same call!

They return before Kal-L can run to the void, and everyone reaches the same conclusion: there is only one universe now, but obviously elements of the old realities are different from the new reality…and some elements never existed!

While the four contact as many heroes as they can find to discuss the ramifications, we switch to deep space. Rip Hunter’s time sphere (carrying Hunter, Adam Strange, Captain Comet, Dolphin, Atomic Knight, and Animal Man) encounter Brainiac’s ship adrift.

They board to investigate and discover the corpse (if a robot can have a corpse) of Brainiac.

Back on Earth, many of the heroes have gathered at Titan’s Tower, where they’re all checking each others’ math to make sure everyone has put two and two together. Huntress and Earth-2′s Robin explain that they, like Kal-L, don’t exist in this “new Earth”. Superboy-Prime is shocked when he finds out his Earth never existed either (that’s what happens when your universe was written in just so it could become a victim. Just ask Lady Quark)

Suddenly, Harbinger appears (having somehow regained her powers due to the new reality) and confirms this fact, and explains that some elements of each individual earths’ histories no longer existed (though reality seems to have conformed around Earth-1 primarily. I guess DC would have lost a lot of readers if it conformed around Earth-X), meaning only the modern versions of the “duplicate” heroes (like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman) are part of this new reality, while heroes that share a name, but not a past (like Flash, Green Lantern, and Atom) exist alongside their younger counterparts. 

Kal-L flips out at this news, as it means that he will never see his wife Lois again.

As Kal-L flies off in a streak of self-pity, we switch to the Spirit Realm, where the Spectre lies unconscious, severely weakened by his battle with the Anti-Monitor (I’m sure this will be important later)

DOGGIE LANGUAGE WINS TWO AWARDS

The Dog Writers’ Association of America competition results for 2020-2022 are out!

I am very grateful and humbled that my first book - Doggie Language: A Dog Lover’s Guide to Understanding Your Best Friend (Summersdale Publishers, 2020) has won two awards: Best Series of Illustrations and Best Book in Behavior, Health, and Care. 

The other books in the same category are by dog advocates and authors I really  respect so to be honest, I received this news with some mixed feelings. The fact that a small illustrated book that is relatively light on text has won a Best Book award next to these amazing other nominees tells me that pictures can communicate very important information. Art can be useful and effective in helping people connect with their animals. 

Thank you to everyone who has supported my through the years! I am by no means an expert on anything and am always passionate about sharing what I am learning through my art. The learning doesn’t end!

LAST BY NOT LEAST.... Pet Portrait Commissions

I have been receiving numerous emails asking me when I will be doing pet portraits again. This is a tough question to answer.   

My work schedule has changed radically in the past 2 years, and I am still figuring out how to juggle being a new author (all the time needed for research, drawing, writing, and deadlines!) with managing online retail & wholesale shops, AND doing commissioned work. There is also the matter of work-life balance. What this means is that I have less time that I used to. 

It is likely that I won’t be doing portraits again until 2024 when my next book - Dogs of the World - has been submitted to my publisher.

met my new colleagues today. everyone seemed nice but it seemed busy despite not having a lot of customers (it's a bank). i got the real talk from one of the ladies which i would give to someone which is it's hard, you'll be tired, there's a steep learning curve and some of the customers can be horrible (honestly sounds like retail). but im just nervous because im going in knowing NOTHING. like i don't even have a banking app on my phone (im going to do that this week, i haven't told them this) and some of it is just showing people how to do online banking. i know i'll be able to learn but im just worried.
