lix. Beauty and Her Beast
<<Previous || first arc || second arc || third arc || AO3 || Next>>
Parallel scene: Lovely, Dark, and Deep from Obiyuki Winter Challenge 2018.
As Kiki set the hunting lodge to order, she assessed the situation.
Truth be told, she had foreseen little good following Obi’s choices from the start, and now there was every reason to declare her fears vindicated.
She found her friend alone and forsaken, stranded somewhere along the road to nowhere and by no means in the best of health.
...
Kiki had not meant to interfere. She had understood in the couple’s sudden and silent departure, vanishing on the eve of their wedding, that they would find their own way now.
She thought of them; she wished them well; she waited.
When Shirayuki’s letters stopped, she had begun watching, listening, looking for signs of something amiss.
Had they simply disappeared again, in quest of a still more distant retreat than the one they had made for themselves in the wilds of the Haruka estate?
The message from Mitsuhide had settled this question.
...
Where Obi had gone now, why he had left — those questions Kiki could not answer, and she doubted whether Shirayuki might, either.
Perhaps Obi himself would be hard-pressed to explain.
Regardless of the case, Kiki considered such details immaterial. He had made his decision; he had broken the promise sworn before her and to his wife.
Now only one question remained: what next?
...
Shirayuki’s feelings wavered from gladness to trepidation when Kiki re-entered, bearing a bowl of something hot.
She felt herself stronger as she sat up to eat, but inwardly her spirit quailed.
Twice now Shirayuki had appealed for assistance with her quest; twice she had been refused — by the very persons she might have expected more interested, most sympathetic to her case.
Now that she faced a third prospect of rejection, Shirayuki debated whether to mount the petition at all.
...
Perhaps Kiki was too busy; perhaps it would not be fair to ask.
Shirayuki would not want to put her in an uncomfortable position…would not want to impose….
She accepted the bowl in silence and began to eat with her eyes lowered.
...
Kiki sat beside her on the bed, a gesture so familiar that Shirayuki looked up in surprise.
She met her friend’s kindest smile, the one she had encountered first in the belly of a pirate’s ship after a long nightmare of fear and isolation.
The same expression of warmth and kind understanding met her now.
...
“Shirayuki,” her friend said gently. “You’ve come a long way.”
The herbalist of Tanbarun turned royal pharmacist then princess-to-be, bereaved and betrothed again, lately a wife and now a sojourner — at this acknowledgement, she felt herself begin to tremble.
Shirayuki gripped the bowl to stop it from splashing.
...
Kiki laid her small hand, strong and sure, on her friend’s shoulder. “You’re not alone,” she said simply.
Shirayuki set the bowl aside and let herself be held as she had not for an interminable number of nights — not since Obi had left her nor Zen before him, not even since her grandparents, but perhaps all the years back to the loss of that unknown mother who had once cradled her close and secure as Kiki did now.
The fear drained away as a restful sense of comfort overtook it.
Shirayuki leaned on her friend and said, “I’m looking for Obi.”
...
Kiki nodded. She had guessed as much, but it meant something that Shirayuki spoke in the present tense. She was yet searching; she had not given up.
Bolstered by this first mark of acceptance, Shirayuki drew herself upright.
She met Kiki’s gaze and confessed, “I don’t know where he is.”
...
There it was – the shame and futility of her search, bundled together in one short phrase.
She had admitted herself completely forsaken, even as she asked an fabulous boon: help me to find a man who does not want to be found.
Help me track a flake of snow in the mountains, a fallen leaf in the forest.
Help me to journey, I know not where, for a man who may refuse me when I arrive.
Help me to do the impossible.
...
She bared the guilt and absurdity of it all before the gaze of Lady Kiki Seiran, the third nobility of her adopted country to whom she had addressed her plea.
The first had scorned both her and his son, lashing out in anger.
The second had turned from her, drawn away along his own road to somewhere she knew not, too bound in his own pain to minister to hers.
...
Now Kiki’s eyes regarded her: the pale clarity of an aristocratic line, hardened like diamonds in the forge of Kiki’s exacting mind and unrelenting spirit.
The eyes of a basilisk when angered, the eyes of a sphinx when calm, they weighed up all who came before them and found most wanting.
Shirayuki met these eyes unflinching, firm in the courage that rarely wavered and never deserted her for long, and awaited her judgment.
...
Kiki rose from the bed and walked to the window, every step precise. She stood gazing out at the forest around them, lately streaked with white.
They were in the depths of cold yet; spring had not thawed the roads.
It would be a difficult journey under the best of circumstances, like and unlike the one she and Shirayuki had undertaken alongside two men now lost to them. Then they had traveled from the border with Tanbarun all the way to the capital of Clarines, and Shirayuki had arrived a fugitive from injustice.
...
Shirayuki was hardy and wise to the natural world, Kiki knew, but her health was flagging; at the very least, she had suffered a shock.
Besides this, the long distance of that first journey had followed known routes.
Shirayuki had stuck to the main roads in her flight from Tanbarun – speedy, but not secretive, as the untimely gift of apples had proved.
The four of them together had preferred the open country, but still along familiar paths, with known supply points.
In this situation, such a method of travel would never serve their purpose.
...
“Obi had made a life of secrecy and flight,” Kiki said. “For his kind, the woods are the nearest they have to a home. He is skilled above all in the art of vanishing without a trace, of leaving false trails, of assuming multiple identities to conceal his passage.
“Beyond this, he will have allies equally if not better skilled, some situated to provide just such a service as preventing discovery — by bolt holes, hidden passages, even arranging stowaways aboard ships.”
She turned to read Shirayuki’s face as she spoke, watching for the emotions that overtook it.
...
“When Obi fell to our supervision, Zen instructed us in the case of his disappearance, that we were not to follow.
“It would be useless, a fruitless waste of our resources. To track him with no idea of his whereabouts or purpose may cost months… even years.
“He may never be found.”
...
“Even if it takes my whole life,” Shirayuki answered, eye blazing, “I won’t stop looking! I won’t give up on him. It doesn’t matter how long.”
“Long,” Kiki repeated. “It will be long.”
The two women stood in silence for a moment. Hard sunlight slanted in through the window and struck the floor in long bright bars.
...
Then Kiki smiled. “So,” she said, “there is no time to waste. Let us start at once.”

I think we should just bring back Wungo Wednesday and start a fandom collective anime rewatch
#Because otherwise I can feel I won't last much longer#Because like. The last two hyperfixations of mine ended the moment I started feeling like there wasn't any new content#And two days ago in one day I started a new manga a new book and rewatching a favourite show#Whereas I hadn't started anything new in the two years ever since I got into bsd. Which makes it NOT a good sign#But the bsd anime has now ended for one month and 25 days and that's the last time the plot actually moved forward.#And if I counted right. The manga took 4 chapters (that is chapters 110-111) to adapt 6 minutes#That means it's going to take another 12 months (18 minutes left to adapt. that's 12 more chapters) to catch up with the anime#Yeah I'm not. sticking around this long with nothing new to see I'm sorry#Best case scenario I take a one year hiatus but that doesn't make it sound likely that I'll be back#And I know it's fresh news as early as this morning that author said they were introducing a new character but like.#They also said they finished writing this arc like. One year and half ago if I remember correctly?#And we still have yet to see the end of i t so...#That is to say. I'll probably be starting an anime rewatch starting next Wednesday. I've been meaning to do it for a while anyway#I don't want to leave the fandom I like the one chapter a month format#On the positive news I still have a queue of original posts that spans over ten months#And I was meaning to start the reblogs queue too in these days. So there's that#random rambles

013. Recommendation (pt. 4/5)
♡ Pairing - Vash x Reader
♡ Word count - 1.1k
♡ Warnings - none
♡ Description - Vash finally caves and sees you again.
Part of the 150 Bullets drabble series on AO3.
Part 1 ---- Part 2 ---- Part 3 ---- Part 4 (you are here!) ---- Part 5
Tumblr media
So it goes for the next nine years. Letters are constantly exchanged between you two. Trinkets and baubles pass between envelopes, too. Vash’s pockets fill with the papers you send, and he pulls them out on lonely nights to thumb over the ink and laugh at the bad jokes. Some letters fall apart from bullets he dodges, and he mourns their loss every time. It’s like losing you all over again. But, he reminds himself that he chose to leave, not you.
He wonders if you look older. If you’ve cut your hair. He still expects you to write one day, telling him you’ve found a partner, that you’ve started a relationship, that your partner doesn’t like that you’re constantly writing letters to another man and you’ll have to cut contact. He dreads those thoughts, those days. A secret part of him hopes it never comes to that, selfish as it is.
He tells himself he hopes you find happiness wherever you go.
Your latest letter is long, filled with anecdotes of your days and funny stories. Near the end, your letter takes a turn:
I’ve also heard about someone taking the Plants, too. Several towns have been wiped off the map recently. Do you know anything about that? It’s crazy, what some bandits will do to get money or power.
One of my towns was hit, actually. Henna. I rode to it one day and just found it in fresh ruins. Some of it was still smoldering with fire. Most of everyone had left by then, and those who hadn’t…I had to leave quickly and sent word for help to go to them. I couldn’t do anything, not without outside help. They tried to take my bird. I think they planned to eat her. Desperate people do desperate things.
Please be careful out here, birdie.
You end with a joke, as always, but Vash barely reads it. He looks up, around at the small camp he’s made for himself that night, the bottle of alcohol sitting by his hip. A sinking feeling settles in his chest. He’d heard about the Plant thefts, too. It was part of the reason he’d travelled to the southernmost part of the region. The other, well…he can’t admit it to himself, but he wants to be close by in case something goes wrong for you. Bandits, bullies, robbers – they just get more numerous the further from cities one gets. Not that he’d get there in time. He wouldn’t even know something happened to you until your letters just stop coming.
That thought settles something in him. He’s known, of course, that there’s no way to help you unless by chance. But maybe it’s the alcohol, or a fierce want to just see you again that finally, finally takes over. He pulls out his pen and paper and writes a simple letter he’ll send tomorrow:
                ______,
Do you want to meet at the town Gregarious for dinner sometime soon?
Vash
Of course you say yes.
Gregarious is a bigger town, up-and-coming on its milling and water production. They even added a third Plant to their arsenal recently. Everyone is in high spirits, and Vash receives friendly nods when he walks in.
The Mom and Pop’s is crowded for dinner. He’s happy, seeing so many people out and about. But there’s one person he’s looking for. His eyes scan the room in quick flits, jumping from one person to another. Have you dyed your hair? Cut it?
Someone taps him on the shoulder, and he turns, and his breath leaves him. It’s you. You, with your hair in a braid, the same color it’s always been. You look hesitant, even with recognition in your eyes. “Vash?” your quiet voice asks.
Without preamble, Vash opens his arms wide. Your face breaks into a grin, and you hug him just as tightly as he hugs you. He can smell the apple lotion on your skin, along with the dust of the day, the suns in your hair.
Dinner isn’t awkward like he feared it would be. Nine years of letters will do that, he supposes. You both chatter to each other about your day, how you got here, where you’re staying, how each of your goals are going. It’s nice. It’s so nice. Vash can’t keep a smile off his face the whole time. Your cheeks turn red with your own smiling.
“So what are your plans now?” He asks, taking a sip of beer.
You push your vegetables around on your plate for a moment. “Well, the library exchange program is pretty well set up. A lot of young people – especially girls – are reading and writing and going to college, or planning on it. HQ has been so impressed with my progress that they want me to move to Octovern and be on the board.” You push a carrot around on your plate. “I turned them down.”
Vash gawps and leans forward. “What? Why?”
You smile. “I like being out here. I like seeing people, strange as that is to say. I usually hate people.” You and he share a knowing laugh. “But I like seeing how I’m actually making a difference, and I don’t want to sit in a stuffy board room giving orders to other librarians, where to go, whatever. That’s just not the kind of work I like. Plus, I…was hoping to travel with you again.”
You look up to gauge his reaction. He tries to school a neutral face, but you see right through it. “It wouldn’t be forever! I’d still hand out books and set up routes, just in a more sporadic way. We have several librarians that do it that way, travel wherever they want and switch books out when they come through a town. It gives people something to look forward to when they see us.”
You were already using “us” again. Vash feels torn. On the one hand, you’re doing exactly what he left you to do. You aren’t as safe as he’d hoped, but it’s better than traveling with him. On the other…Sigh. On the other hand, he really, really misses you.
You’ve carried on, not noticing his thoughtful look. It almost feels like a job interview – as if he needed your recommendation that you were reliable. “I’ve gotten much better at defending myself with my knife! And I’m good at making getaways on foot and on tomas. And I know you miss my cooking, you’ve said it a thousand times in your letters – “
“One month,” he hears himself say. “One month, and we see how much you still miss traveling with me. Alright?”
Your chair screeches from the force you jump out of it, and you’re on him, squealing with excitement and shaking his shoulders. Vash laughs at your enthusiasm. He’s missed it. He’s missed you.
He just hopes it isn’t a mistake to invite you along again.

Every day I am haunted by the fact JJK could be amazing but it will be just idk Bleach or something
#I've seen a lot of people complaining about the fact that it's impossible to fit the ending of every unfinished arc#in the five chapters that remain for the manga to end for good#And it all just... legitimises my fear and apprehension haha#And it's a pity! It's a pity! The dynamics were so good! And yet nothing! Sukuna was so good! And yet nothing!#It was so nice how he seemed to play with the idea of transcending human categories and values but even the values of curses so to speak#Well beyond everything. Well beyond positive/creative nihilism even! He was not like Mahito#I wonder if Mahito is more a negative nihilism with a funny edge or a positive nihilism. For now it seems positive#with how he seems to have said something like 'nothing matters so we can do whatever we want and create what matters'#But Sukuna transcends all that! It could have been interesting to see how that developed in a way that wasn't just childish edginess#But no. And then there's all the idea of curses and sorcerers not being all that different#and so not really entirely possible to say one side is good and the other bad#There was the idea of the very source of powers with fear and love playing a role here in such a juicy way#And then there's the entire thing happening with Gojo as a concept and the very concepts he plays with which I could eat like an apple#but also I would let those very concepts eat at my heart as a worm inside an apple#Full of holes and rotting inside out and yet delighting at the sweetness#It could all be so good! And yet! Most of the manga is a few sketched dynamics and concepts and a very long fight with Sukuna#promising half finished arcs#WHY it could have been so good. And I don't think criticism is a matter of 'fans being spoiled! Go write your story!' or something#It's not a matter of things not going as fans would want them to be. It's a matter of not writing well#or cohesively things established by the author themselves. And I think that's a fair criticism#If we are to take manga as an art‚ which I wholeheartedly support‚#then we can subject mangas to artistic or literary or whatever you want to call it analysis. There are works that are better constructed#than others‚ and there are works that have good ideas but poor execution. And it's always a pity#In the case of JJK it's truly breaking my heart and the comments I see around about these five last chapters are not helping xD#God it could be so good. So good. And I'm not talking about in specific to me‚ which yes that too given the topics‚#but just so good in general. It could be so good. It could have been so good#And yet it's starting to look more and more like any other shonen. It truly breaks my heart haha#I talk too much#Jujutsu Kaisen#I used Bleach because I think that's one of the mangas that has been the most a let down to the friends I have who like shonen

This is for @bluepeachstudios ‘s Ghost in a Shell. It’s really good you should read it.
I looked at exactly one picture of Jupiter Jim and went “yeah this should be enough to draw him.” I will not be answering if it actually was

(I love any character who can say “I don’t want to go back to prison” it’s like the funniest thing to me)
#i don’t know what compelled me to hand write that text. it’s not very good#we just don’t do things the easy way here. that’s why I render with an app on my phone. i don’t believe in simplicity#i had a plan for a lot more full body shots but then I couldn’t find any good lair references so I decided to screw it#I’ve never drawn rise characters before. this is my first time drawing them and expressions wow#I’m not very good at style copying and my default is so much rounder than rise is so that was just a woof#i should say all text in these shit posts aren’t canon at all. you can figure out where they likely take place yes#but they never show up in story#just a little fyi incase anyone decides to check it out#the entire inspiration for this post was just watching 2003 and going#WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY DID THAT??#ghost causally dropping the most wild facts about his life has like endless shit post potential#yeah I went to space. stole a ship. went to jail. aided a fugitive. held a dictator at gunpoint#and folks that’s just one arc. go watch 2003#i debated making angst as it is likely more currently topical but I’m a shit poster at heart#chapter 29. how we feeling boys? I’m actually doing rather well. i think just the fact the build up is over and I’m so tired I no longer#have emtions I’m just pumped for the next chapter whoo!#i started to lose mojo very fast while doing this but I wanted to finish today so I did. i hope it’s not too obvious#yeah anyways go read ghost in a shell#go watch 2003#go read ghost in a shell#i’m gonna go to bed now#ghost in the shell#teenage mutant ninja turtles#tmnt 2003#tmnt 2018#fan fiction recommendations#fan art of a fan fic#rottmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#teenage mutant ninja turtles 2003

THIS FIC ISN'T DEAD!!!! :D
Also, who wants more magic circles?
No I'm serious this cover has been complete for like months. The words on the other hand...
I kid you not, I had the alternate chapter title be "Jellal Delivers The Mail," but I wanted Ultear to be the star.

watching the alpines qualify dead last... my immediate thought was "oh it's going to be sympathy kisses+ for Pierre all season long in the your lips, my lips (apocalypse) universe" 💀
oh my gosh, HI 🤭😍 well this ask made me grin far too fondly down at my phone screen... it just means SO much that people are still thinking of this fic universe even though it hasn't been updated in forever. 🥺 i am really SO touched!
and i also agree COMPLETELY! sympathy kisses all night long, for sure... perhaps even a sympathy blowjob or two... or even (since charles has once again reminded us that he's not sensitive to bottoming) a sympathy fuck 😏 but whatever the case might be, you can bet your ass that they'll definitely be in each other's beds in the 2023 kisses fic 'verse <3333 😘

#Alright I got tragically interrupted while watching it but I'm finally finished watching the episode!!#It's really really good both the animation and drawings are very detailed compared to the rest of the anime but...#The pace is so off :((( Like it's not the end of the world but ugh. It's unfortunate...#So many things just don't hit off as deeply because everything is moving so fast all the time and there's no time to process anything.#They won't allow you one second for the last line of a scene to sink in that the next scene's ost is already playing.#And like it's not even the worst crime an anime can commit I guess but still...#I wish they didn't. Like rather than make a 13 episodes season and squeeze the Sky Casino arc in merely two episodes it would have been–#a lot better to finish the season at the previous episode and make 12 episodes out of everything (so that everything could be better paced)#Like yeah maybe it's not the best season ending that there can be but... It's not terrible either‚ you have Atsushi saying the line–#“there's still hope” and the season ending there‚ that's pretty cool#I don't know why everyone feels like they have to rush all the time.#Guys do I have to be the one to remind you you make more money if more season come out.#Like how can the knowledge of Sigma being made by the book have any kind of impact when we've only known him for ten minutes.#Teruko's looking mad AND looking cutesy AND blowing up the landing zone didn't have the same comedic effect they did in the manga because..#It just happened all together! There's no time to process anything. Or maybe I'm just slow idk but I mean YOU GOTTA–#MAKE TIME FOR THE OPENING AND ENDING IN THE EPISODE c'mon man#Sorry I'm complaining it's actually good. I really really love Teruko & Tachihara. Jouno too!!!#I liked the Tahihara spotlight this episode... It's so cute to see what he's like when he's not acting– well‚ not completely I guess#Mmmmhhh.#Yesterday I read an interesting post on how a lot of early dc/mk wouldn't work today because the technology of the world has changed SO muc#I think a similar reflection can be made for the doa terrorist plot. Countries are pushing towards a complete digital money transition.#In 50 years or so coins may not be circulating anymore and today already the impact of this terrorist plot would be a lot smaller–#compared to when the chapters were coming out. I think#Well. Nice episode! Forward to next week! If tomorrow's manga chapter hasn't killed me before that#random rambles

need to remind myself that while damien only has one arc focused on him in post-ph so far, there’s like only a handful of actual arcs planned rn and his is probably currently the most detailed and interesting of them
#most planned bc i think its just a neat premise and one that isnt original to me#i got inspiration from stuff like darkwood and that bit at the end of ttgl which. may be a hint abt what this is#post ph#damien fletcher#idk if i should share but also if i share it might get me to plan post ph more diligently#sidenot earlier today i grabbed my earbuds off my desk and they hooked on my usb w/ the peus doc on it#so it was a clear sign to fucking work on peus. i got a few sentences out i think we’re near the end of the chapter#inspiration is great for post ph rn it really helps kickstart the more specific stuff#im putting so much time into the beginning and slice of life stuff and the group coming together#but inspiration rlly helps with individual arcs and pulling the main plot together. def gonna be dungeons those are fun setpieces#its the only damien arc rn but its honestly rlly good with it kinda being a reflection of him specifically in his relationship with linebec#and whatnot. i should put some stuff in there abt him alone. he gets some moments with bellum in the tail end of the arc#i could do some stuff with how he problem solves on his own when faced with a fantastical kind of problem#salty talks#ARC AS IN STORY ARC im going kinda light on actual character arcs tbh#linebecks technically finished his and link is. smth. and bellum is the one who’s plotline is his character arc#gotta figure out damien. his could be based around his relationships with other people maybe. his problems seem to lie in his relationships

not my dad not liking moral orel season 3 🤭🤭🤭that's so embarrassing for him (<- he's not wrong for feeling that way but i think it's like 60% because he doesn't like it when art gets weird and that's so so tragic for him)
#i actually think his points make sense this time. which tbqh is not normally how i feel when he criticizes smth i love#basically he was like s3 was a completely different show from the first two seasons#and he didn't like how all over the place and directionless it felt#and honestly yeah ok i can see that#personally i think the choice to broaden the focus to moralton broadly vs mostly just orel is really interesting#and it allows for different facets of their critique of fundie waspisms to extend to situations/characters orel wouldn't really be privy to#(could you imagine 'alone' with orel there? me neither)#and i personally liked them fleshing out the marginal characters. i never found that boring or like a major diversion#again they're like 11 min episodic(ish) things it's hard for them to feel like they drag on y'know#it shows a lot of ambition and i think they pulled it off really well tbh (cancellation aside)#but i will agree that the transition is a little sudden. nature is such a big moment for the series#and for orel's arc specifically but then we spend little time with orel post-nature so the tone shift doesn't#necessarily align with his realization (at least in terms of the canon timeline. ep release order does align)#it's sudden but we jump back to before the shattering. it's disorienting and i think it's kind of cool as hell#a realization like orel's in nature is gonna throw the past into question and color his life and thus the town#(bc let's face it orel is the real mayor of moralton kfhsjs) and while we've been seeing Some of moralton's ugliness#in every episode until now it's shown in full force in and post-nature (release-wise). so when the timeline jumps around#and it all feels twisted and hazy and sickening and it All Comes Back To The Hunting Trip as our point of reference#for when things are happening it makes it feel like the trip Caused this disturbance. it's almost a spatio-temporal THING#like orel IS the center of this universe. my point is it's weird and i like it a lot i think it works#but anyway i think s3 is a natural evolution of s1+2 albeit an accelerated one#and i really wish we'd gotten to see more of what s3 morel was cooking bc it was setting up some really cool stuff imo#like he hated everything w mommy censordoll x clay but it's SUCH a cool place to take their characters. freud would go crazy#moral orel#and i think if they knew where they had to end the season maybe focusing on other characters was a way to keep orel stagnant enough to like#end the finale where they needed him. maybe.#we actually DID finish it yesterday. i rewatched the finale the day before bc i was impatient but yeah 👍#now it's chapter black time >:}
