how i think different hq couples get engaged

kageyama and hinata are dating and living together for over a decade before they get engaged. there's just always something more pressing going on - usually their pro-volleyball careers - and they're both just so content with how their relationship is, marriage just seems kind of like an unnecessary hassle and a logistical nightmare that neither of them want to deal with. once they reach their 30s though, and they've both settled a bit more into their careers, i can see one of them casually proposing one day - they don't even have rings - because at this point, they both know they are going to spend the rest of their lives together, why not make mrs. hinata happy and make it official. plus, a wedding is an excuse to get together with all their friends again. when they buy their rings, they buy chains at the same time so they can still wear their rings on the court.

tsukishima and yamaguchi get engaged a lot earlier than kghn, i think they get engaged a year after they both graduate from undergrad. tsukki bought yams' engagement ring in their second year at uni after saving up basically since they got together in high school, but he waited to propose until after they lived and worked "in the real world," just in case yamaguchi found someone better or if their relationship changed when they didn't have school as an excuse to see each other all the time (kei eventually admits this to tadashi years down the line and tadashi scolds him - the efficacy being undercut by the kisses he gives kei at the same time - for ever thinking their relationship was so fragile). obviously yamaguchi was over the moon when tsukki proposed, and takes to calling him "his fiance" at every chance he gets. they wait to actually have a wedding until after tsukki has finished his masters, and they've both started working, so that they can actually enjoy the event with as little stress as possible

iwaizumi and oikawa get engaged around their mid-20s as well. i think oikawa is the kind of person that has had their whole life planned out in a scrapbook since they were 10, and he knows exactly when and how he planned to propose to iwa, so when iwaizumi beat him to the punch - an evening complete with a romantic dinner in a jazz cafe that iwa scouted for the occasion, roses, and a walk to the playground where they first met where upon iwa finally got down on one knee - tooru was so shocked and generally overcome with emotion that he burst into tears and forgot to say yes until hours later, when iwaizumi asked him again after many kisses and sweet words. ofc, after the shock has worn off, Oikawa Tooru's Dream Wedding Plans are back on, and iwa lets him take over planning the most elaborate and expensive wedding japan has ever seen

Thinking about Tobio learning that Tooru is going away to Argentina and, one evening, his feet bring him to Tooru's house.

He doesn't have any plan. So, once he's there he just stands in front of the gate, eyeing the door, until deciding that this was a stupid idea.

He begins walking away but bumps into Tooru, who's on his way home from somewhere. Tooru is really surprised to see him.

"Tobio-chan? What are you doing here?"

The mix of panic and desperation render Tobio completely speechless (not like he had any words prepared to begin with, anyway). So he just blinks at Tooru for a moment and then lunges forward and kisses him on the mouth.

Tooru is frozen in shock, at first. He furrows his brow and asks quietly, "What was that for?"

Realizing what he has done, Tobio flushes red, icy terror crawling down his spine. He forces himself out of his initial paralysis and just bolts away, leaving Tooru standing there, his questions unanswered.

i don't get how oikage is not a popular ship in the hq fandom with how much CANON material they have and instead they're actually one of the most hated ships for reasons that don't even make any sense.

you don't like oikage because of their age gap? you mean their 2 and a half years age gap? i don't see anything wrong with it there are couples out there with an even bigger age gap.

you don't like shipping first years w third years? fair but i would have to remind you that they're 30 years old and 28 years old now.

"oikawa abused/bullied kageyama!" god forbid a man be petty 🤦🏻‍♀️ and if you're pertaining to that ONE moment oikawa almost hit kageyama i would like to remind you that between the two of them, it's oikawa that remembers it the most. you've seen the look he had on his face when he realized what he had almost done and you know he regrets it. i know it was bad that he almost took it out on kageyama but he was just a child that time and you can't exactly blame him for lashing out because of his emotions. children are bound to make stupid actions! but it would have been a different story if he actually did hit kageyama so we have iwaizumi to thank for being there to stop him. it did not happen and that's what matters the most but the memory of that moment still haunts him. kageyama might have remembered a thing or two but i don't think he made a big deal out of it, but oikawa was a different story. i just know he still remembers that day when he had a flashback after trying to stop tobio's setter dump.

oikage has soooooo much going on between them and that's what makes their ship so flavorful literally why is this ship not popular i thought people liked a good enemies/rivals to lovers trope i believe they SHOULD be the face of that trope because isn't oikage literally one of the first rivalries introduced and EMPHASIZED in the series 🤓☝ karasuno vs aoba johsai is literally just oikage tension on court they literally had a dramatic moment after the match telling each other that now they're tied.

I DON'T APPRECIATE how people don't acknowledge oikage when all oikawa had done in the series is yap about tobio tobio chan tobio wa TOBIO !!! you can say he hates him but you can't deny how much he admires him too. he knows tobio is skilled, that he'll eventually surpass him, and he hates how it makes him feel inferior but that feeling is exactly what drives him to work even harder. kageyama is HIS rival, just as he is kageyama's.

both of them holds each other in high regards but i don't think they would ever realize how much they had affected each other. oikawa had always felt scared that kageyama would take away his position, he was scared of the /genius/ that suddenly came and gave him the impending feeling of something being taken away from him. kageyama was scared of him too, he was overwhelmed with his senior's skills, doubting that he could ever reach his level. he had always been watching oikawa, learning and picking up his serving habits, seeing how he manages to bring the best out of his team. they both threaten each other, but that's because they both recognize how great the other is.

they're an incredibly frustrating ship because they're both idiots that think they won't ever reach each other's levels but that's what makes me love them more

they're so angsty i think they should just talk it out and kiss 😊

While I'm not sure I have the right understanding of what "headcanon" is, if you'll listen to my ramblings for a bit, I'll gladly use the excuse.

ー The line between Oikawa-san's mild teasing and his derogation of Tobio is very fine, but the recipient can't clearly tell the difference either way and thus mostly ignores it. Wait, he doesn't like it, does he???

ー Would either ever admit to being the first one to catch feelings? No, of course not. Don't be silly.

ー They live together less like a couple and more like co-existing beings. Who just happen to come into 'physical contact' a lot.

ー I like to think that Oikawa-san's hands are often cold and all of Tobio is very warm.

ー They have matching necklaces. Not because they want to, but because of a sponsorship, where they picked out the same style, unknowingly.

ー Tobio likes Oikawa-san's hands a lot. Perhaps too much. Actually, his fascination is slowly getting out of control.

Oikage in planetarium (first Oikage of the year!)

Oikawa invited Tobio to the planetarium. Tooru thought it would be a good idea to go there. Kageyama didn't mind at all. He would go anywhere with Oikawa.

They went inside. The session was just for them. 40 minutes in the dark and alone. Oikawa was very worried about this. His mouth stretched into a crooked smile at the mere thought: *me, Tobio, and the stars*

They sat down. The lights went out, a starry sky appeared on the ceiling, and a deep, low voice began to talk soporificly about space.

Everything was fine for the first 5 minutes, but then Kageyama started to feel sleepy. Well, that's not surprising. The darkness is really soporific.

Oikawa wanted to take advantage of this, and as long as no one sees (even though they're the only ones here, lol), intertwine his fingers with Tobio's. He slipped his hand under his. And what was Tooru's surprise when Tobio's hand grabbed him like a trap. The grip wasn't too strong, but Oikawa wasn't expecting it anyway.

He looked at Tobio. He was asleep. Although when the brown-haired man continues looking at him, Kageyama opened his right eye. Tooru abruptly turned away and blushed (although you can't see it in the dark)).

They were still holding hands. Kageyama looked around. He carefully leaned to the right and rested on Oikawa's shoulder. The brown-haired man shuddered. He glanced at Kageyama from the corner of his eye. Out of excitement, Oikawa just continued to looked up at stars. Kageyama cunningly took advantage of this.

He reached out and kissed Oikawa on the cheek, and then came back to his shoulder. Tooru's insides exploded, flared, sparkled, mixed up, and went crazy because they were still holding hands in a planetarium just for the two of them.

Oikawa grinned, put his head on Tobio's head, and released his arm to hug him.

They sat how until the end. Or not?

The lights turned on, a worker came in and was like: "uuummm?"

Oikawa opened his eyes a crack and blinked. He looked to his left. He hugged Tobio, and Tobio hugged him back. They really fell asleep, in hug ~ω~

You must've already seen me losing my mind in your tags but I just wanna emphasize just how crazy your oikage is making me feel!!!!! For an unpopular ship like this, it's honestly rare to see a lot of good art, so for an artist of your calibre to just come along and start posting straight masterpieces everyday almost feels a little overwhelming (in a good way!) and is making me wanna climb the walls. YES I enjoyed the dumpster battle movie, the animation was so good, the story beats and sfx and kenma's POV and idk how they managed to make a volleyball rally seem like a fight to the death but my god. I wanted to eat the movie

I think iwaoi and kuroken are different in that iwaoi are very much "equally pulling on each other's hair and spitting into each other's desserts and running after each other with a worm on a stick" type of dynamic. it makes for a very turbulent and fun pairing, and adding to that, the angst that inevitably comes along due to oikawa being so passionate about vball and iwaizumi...iwaizumi being Just Good Enough to play with him until the end of highschool. add to that the angst of oikawa being recognized as The Grand King setter, while iwaizumi always seems like a footnote. ah the childhood friend, ah the grand king's first wing spiker yes—but not his best. although iwaizumi himself has never once said he felt inadequate or left behind, you just can't help but wonder, can't help but feel it yourself, this gulf that spans the point from oikawa to iwaizumi. I don't think iwaoi is more famous in the way that means they're better, I just think it shows that people like it when things hurt hahahah

kuroken I would say is like a ball of fluff, like cotton candy, easy to swallow and easy to enjoy. or no, maybe you could say they're definitely simply just childhood friends, without all the drama that oikawa brings to iwaoi HHAHA. I wouldn't call the ship bland though, because if you peel back the layers of fluff, you rmr it's not just about quiet x loud, or small x big, or gamer x hot guy, which are labels that kuroken is often find themselves in—but that actually, kuroo has such an understated comprehension of how kenma has such a killer instinct, that kenma actually can get Serious, if you manage to get him in the zone. people will tell him kenma doesn't seem to like vball much, or that kenma seems too frail or too lax or too unsuited to exertion, and kuroo will just hum and smile like, well. if kenma didn't like it, he wouldn't do it. and that easy acceptance, that unspoken understanding that kenma never even had to tell him—somehow it just gets me. sometimes easygoing ships just hit different, when they're so comfortable with each other. like how kenma will tease kuroo with a blank-face by giving him mint candy when he knows he doesnt like mint. like they're already settled in together, what more can you say about them. also kenma being younger than kuroo is kinda cute, considering how shy kuroo was when they first met.

as for ushioi and oikage, I can definitely see where fans of those ships are coming from. I mean I once read a Yamaguchi/Oikawa fic and i rmr it being surprisingly good. the sheer amount of content, conflict and drama that oikawa brings with him to any ship is just so typical of him. of course he has to bring out the best in everyone he's matched with, that's just what a good setter does. ushioi and oikage are so rife with history and bad blood and competitiveness and hurt pride, I can only imagine how so good it is to write and read about the journey they take to make it to an end where the 2 characters are together and united. sometimes the journey fraught with strife is just as delicious as the happy ending.

I can't rmr the exact moment I started shipping iwaoi, just because it was so long ago, but prbably...I think it was probably when iwaizumi stopped oikawa from going to jail by committing manslaughter on poor little tobio when they were in middle school. and then yelling at him to go home and take care of his knee. iwaizumi's palpable concern masked as anger was so...yeah, i was like damn oikawa if you don't wife that guy up, I will.

and lastly, all iwaoi scenes are my fav, just bc we get so little, but my favs have to be the "you're a partner I can be proud of" scene; the "when oikawa feels threatened, there's only one person he sets to" scene, set up by Kageyama himself; the scene where oikawa points at iwaizumi for his last ever set in highschool and then proceeds to do an insane long ass set from across the court straight to iwaizumi: and lastly, the little sketch where iwaizumi is showing oikawa a book of fish and there's one named 'oikawa', looking so pleased with himself while oikawa is just like "..."
