Okay, I'm going to talk about the Illario comment from the AMA. This one:

It frames Illario in a way that feels like he deserves everything that happened because he is Bad. Viago, Teia, and Lucanis (and Caterina????) are Good and Illario is Bad. Illario had to be kept in check, because he is Bad. Lucanis belittles Illario because he is Bad. Caterina never respected or cared for Illario because he is Bad.

The idea that the reason Illario was treated the way he was is because everyone around him could just tell he was just inherently Not As Good As Them in some way is an awful thing to suggest, but it's also a bad storytelling choice, because it's boring? Illario is a tragedy, he's not a kids' cartoon villain. He's a victim of his circumstances, a victim of favoritism, a victim of abuse. It doesn't absolve him of his own choices (crimes), but it does explain them. In a way that is way more interesting, and tragic, and satisfying than just "well he was Bad all along".

BUT ALSO Illario isn't even that bad? Before *this*, what is the worst thing Illario has ever done? His job?? Is his crime not developing an abundance of empathy and altruism in an environment that was literally intentionally designed to turn him into a ruthless killer?? He is pretty selfish and only cares about himself and his family (which is, again, exactly how he was raised to be), but just because he isn't "good" doesn't mean he's evil.

In The Wigmaker Job when Lucanis asks him to, he rounds up the slaves and gets them to safety even though he thinks they should kill them because they're witnesses. Lucanis says he trusts Illario, says he "may be a snob, but he's true to his word", and he IS! Illario could have just left them and made up some excuse, and the only consequence would have been Lucanis being mad/disappointed, but he didn't. Both Lucanis and Teia mention that he is the one who follows Lucanis and helps put out all the proverbial fires Lucanis starts. Illario doesn't have to put up with any of this. He chooses to follow Lucanis, and chooses to help people when Lucanis asks him to. He's not evil, he is very explicitly neutral.

Because while Illario doesn't have empathy for strangers (which is a survival thing! He can't feel empathy for people he has to kill them! Lucanis is an anomaly) he has an abundance of it for Lucanis. He worries about Lucanis, he cares about Lucanis! He resents Caterina's treatment of not only himself, but Lucanis too. He wouldn't send someone he loves out to die on dangerous missions, and part of him resents that Caterina does it to Lucanis. ("If I was in charge, you wouldn't have to do this anymore.")

And, genuinely, if Caterina had spontaneously decided to retire to some remote island somewhere after The Wigmaker Job and leave Illario in charge, what would happen? What horrible crimes would an "unchecked" Illario have unleashed upon the world that Caterina had to protect us all from? Firing Lucanis? Honestly probably not even that, since it's more likely he'd play up his own rashness in an attempt to convince Lucanis that he most definitely should not leave Illario unattended and should instead stay safe and sound by his side, since that's the tactic he uses to convinced Lucanis to join him in this note ("Would you truly leave me to my own devices? What would I do without you!")

Illario isn't a bad person, and Caterina wasn't "keeping him in check" oh my god.

Elden Ring aggression mod yap fest

I've been playing the ER aggression mod since December which means that essentially all enemies that are loaded on the map attack you the second you spawn in and also chase you thru the map, plus since they are in aggro all the time you can't fast travel at all.

I have so many things to say because I absolutely love this mod and it will be weird to go back to just normal ER again but I have some funny videos to show as well. But also tumblr butchers video quality. :')

But I just wanna say that I audibly yelped when I was doing fuck-all in the Kaiden camp in Limgrave and a runebear bodyslammed me out of nowhere, he came there all the way from Mistwood, and funnily enough I have video of that too.

Another thing is that even tho you killed the archer guy golem in the Mountaintops, he is STILL loaded in after that every time unless you are right on the bridge so he will fucking exterminate you from all the way there even if you are just in Altus, or Consecrated Snowfield. The latter one is kinda impossible to do on aggression mod because of the archer, even if I take Malenia's 2nd form and her daughters as a summon, which is probably the strongest summon because of the rot kids (I luckily also have a video of that). The updated summon mod allegedly lets you upgrade the demigods as summons but I still have all of them on +0, so for example Godrick does like 70 damage per punch. Malenia's daughters tho are like Hulk on steroids even when no upgrade.

Also on this mod, the killed furnace golems also respawn, so I guess big things that are dead coming back is a bug of this mod but dear lord... and surprisingly it is a lot of fun

Thanks for tagging me! Oh my god where do I even begin?

I haven’t seen The Music Man or Fame, so I can’t speak on them (though I do believe Stella has connected Music Man to Logan, actually). I’ve actually said that I think Jess could have seen Heathers at some point, but only if Doula or Lane’s twins force him too. He’d prefer the original movie and be very uncomfortable about how much he relates to the musical version of J.D. I haven’t seen the musical version of The Apartment, but the movie definitely feels like something he’d love. And Hadestown? Yes. Just- yes. Me and @chambersofthesea have talked a lot about this and that Jess would love it. On my own post I put down the Epics, the Chants, When The Chips Are Down, Way Down Hadestown and Promises as songs he would particularly love (so like, half the musical).

As for part 2 of your post... I’ve only seen two, sorry. But they’re also the two musicals I’ve mentioned in my own elaborate Jess the musical theatre nerd posts!

From Once I would say Leave and Say It To Me Now, because they fit perfectly with season 4 Jess but could also be songs that haunt him post a certain scene in season 6.

And Company. Oh Company. I don’t think Jess is a Sondheim “stan” and I don’t actually think he’d relate all that much to Bobby, but the feelings expressed throughout the show of love and loneliness? Oh boy would he. I highlighted Another Hundred People because of his New York roots and Sorry-Grateful because it feels like his state of mind in season 3.

Jess Mariano + Musicals

Okay, I just decided to do this, because I'm really curious as to which other non-referenced musicals Jess could be a fan of, and I'm begging @stellaluna33 @butchjess and @anxiouspotatorants for your inputs on this, so I wonder whether Jess would like the following musicals-

1. The Music Man

River City, Iowa- the opposite of Stars Hollow

Jess could definitely connect to Tommy Djilis as well as his forbidden romance with Zaneeta Shynn. His favourite number would be "Marian the Librarian" as well as "You've Got Trouble" and "Goodnight My Someone"- he definitely would be affected by the last track.

2. Fame

It's kind of an underrated 80s classic, having won an Oscar for it's title track, but I think Jess would like the Bonus track- Miles from Here.

3. Heathers

He'd love the track- Lifeboat and Seventeen. Nuff said. He personally prefers the movie, but he's a sucker for the soundtrack.

4. The Apartment musical- Promises, Promises

"I'll Never Love Again"- that would definitely be on his playlist. Including the title track.

5. Hadestown

He'd think of it as "Les Miserables" with Greek tradition. He would love the opening number- Any Way the Wind Blows, and Why We Build The Wall.
