Really enjoy the idea that as Gortash and Durge’s relationship progresses over however long, Gortash gets more and more used to Durge’s lurking and hiding in dark corners, and as a result it becomes more and more difficult to make him jump.

Like at the beginning of meeting and working together, Gortash’s head is on a swivel as he keeps wondering when that serial killer will seemingly appear out of nowhere once more.

But then like several years into it, he is strolling into his office which seems to be empty, but then he starts talking very conversationally at full volume about how they should now be moving on to the next part of the plan, knowing full well that a voice is going to respond from the darkest recesses of the room where you can see at most a pair of glowing eyes.

I just thought of the most hilarious next protagonist of Baldur's Gate saga.

A child of Durge and Gortash, killed inside their parent's womb when Durge denied Bhaal, resurrected alongside them by Jergal.

A child any of The Dead Three can lay a claim on because they are:

A child of previous chosen of Bane

A child of Bhaalspawn, a bhaalspawn themselves, albeit striped of that when Bhaal took his essence from Durge, killing them instantly.

DIED before even being born, so clearly Myrkul's subject.

Resurrected by Jergal, so there's ties to that as well.

Can be compelled to follow any of The Dead Three paths, or try to play them and set them against each other, or follow Jergal, or forge their own path.

Essentially a child with no fate.

Can look either as Durge (and be any race Durge presented as) or as Gortash.

The last possibility bringing unique encounters and dialogues and character never knowing they can use being Lord Gortash's child to their advantage or ppl they meet were their father's enemies and they need to dash.

Having ties to different fractions depending on who Durge romanced or if Durge not romanced anyone.

Being raised in Underdark if their parent ended up with Minthara.

Same with unascended Astarion, + lots of acquainted spawns in the Underdark.

Being raised in Hell if their parent went to Avernus with Karlach.

Being raised either in Waterdeep if Gale is their stepfather or with Duke freaking Ravengard as a step- grandfather.

Having ties with Selunites if Shadowheart is a woman they call mother.

Being raised in the nature and having Druids call them their own if Durge and Halsin were involved.

Being raised amongst githianki revolution if Lae'zel was their parent's choice of heart. Having their mother leading a rebellion against a god.

also man having an evil resist!durge who nonetheless gets everyones good endings is SOO much fun because it puts everyone in the really awkward position of walking past sprawling graveyards he singlehandedly filled (including children! an untold number of pets or other small animals!), hearing him say some insane off the cuff shit like using refugees as emergency food, and not rly feeling like you can say anything about it because he stopped you from killing yourself to win back the love of someone who never actually saw you as a fully realized person. he genuinely believes you should live because you bring something irreplacable to the world and itd be diminished with your loss so you shouldnt embrace the false independence nihilistically accepting your terminal health condition promises and continue to fight for a future with you in it knowing hes going to support you the entire time. the foulblooded son of a death god performs what could be his only miracle (in your eyes) and in a feat of impropable compassion shatters the 200 year chains binding you to a cycle of abuse and hatred and you well and truly get to taste the sunlight after two centuries in the literal and metaphorical dark.

and then he also wants to use the human leather necromancy tome to bridge the gap of living and unliving and warp the flesh of the dead into horrid vistas unseen on this world by mortal eyes by twisting their bodies and snapping their bones into nightmarish shapes dreamt of only by the maddened masses of the wailing damned and its like. what the fuck do you say to that after everything hes done. he wants to make a corpse pile of your enemies to cuddle in. he wants you to call his chimerical abomination princess and give it chin scritchies. hes REALLY invested in your opinion specifically so you cant really back out without hurting his feelings. hes making puppy dog eyes at you. fuck.

Haven't properly gotten into Durge yet but bare with me:

from what we've seen, Durge's opinion of Orin wasn't too great; complaining that she is playing with her pray and the aftermath of them as with toys, taking her damn time and not really understanding the point of their Lord Bhaal - it is not the spectacle of mxrder but the act itself that is valued - destruction of all life - and in his name.

So imagine the rage, envy and animosity Orin had felt when her (in my case) 'big sister' - the favourite in the family who starts to get an even more important role in the grand scheme - starts to get entangled with Gortash and his manipulative ways of domination - and not destruction how Bhaal wills it.

As she herself says: '…the little lordling has been whispering in your ears? He always knew how to tumble and twist your mind matter, leave you knotted in his cords.'

Now, ignoring how absolutely deranged that line makes me (lmao) I can fully understand Orin, no matter how messed up she is: besides being the preferred spawn, Durge would also be getting away with meandering or straying from the course of their goal as well- no wonder she decides that she had enough of it and if she can't make herself the favourite, she can make herself the only…

How that pans out for her depends on the Durge, but can't say all too well hah.

So, understanding and handling of mental health in the Realms is apparently a fucking delight (full sarcasm intended). I am still looking at certain characters in a whole new light.

Here's a cut because, oh boy, ableism.

General understanding of mental health is poor.

I don't know how they handle PTSD, anxiety, depression or some various personality disorders so far, though I suspect that the answer depends on exact symptoms and is ultimately 'with a great lack of sympathy.'

Your best hope is the local churches, preferably of one of the gentler gods: temples and monasteries take in many who need charity (so this covers the mentally ill and disabled, as well as the physically disabled, orphans, the homeless, etc) and feeds, clothes and shelters them in exchange for them helping around to the best of their ability. It's usually cloistered communities. They do their best to treat and manage symptoms, typically with herbal physics (medicines). Sometimes more elaborate 'cures' are attempted, and sometimes that goes down a dark path into human experimentation.

The 'slow' and those who are 'a little funny' - people whose divergencies are poorly understood, but don't instill too much fear in their neighbours (the categories also includes things like epilepsy and Traumatic Brain Injury symptoms) - are generally tolerated in society although not with much respect by and large... and you'll possibly be described by your neighbours with the charming phrase 'every village has its idiot.' People whose behaviours are deemed erratic, such as the psychotic or those with severe mood disorders, are referred to as the 'crazed witted' or 'madfolk.'

When your symptoms start to scare neurotypicals too much you may well be driven from settlements and left to fend for yourself in the wilderness. Or there's locking you up!

'Howling keeps' are what are known on Earth as asylums. They're fortress like stone constructions. They are, of course, named after the screams of the inmates. From what I remember from the Waterdhavian asylum shown in Vampire of the Mists: furnishings and clothing are spartan; you're kept in cells, like criminals; the wards are gender segregated; the food and amenities are subpar; the staff tend to be dehumanising; local priests tend to visit to administer care to the inmates/prisoners (it was a priest of Lathander in this case).

People who are highly dependent on assistance or deemed frightening are at risk of being kidnapped or deliberately sold as sacrifices to evil temples and cults shopping for an offering to their god, or for 'parts' to necromancers and evil alchemists.
