real life BAB outlet store reconnaissance yesterday long ass post about it + nostalgia

was thinking about this post still and on my day off i happened to be traveling to a city with a mall, so, i went. i spent about 2.5 hours wandering around and i did go into build-a-bear. this particular location is still set up like the ones the youtuber's nostalgic for; it doesnt have the bland modern design, and still has features like the stuffing machine and the naming computer booths.

i will describe and interpret some customers i saw and then add my thoughts.

the first customers: young (20s-30s) white straight couple and their single daughter (less than 10). before i went to BAB i saw them leave the mall with only BAB bags (the box the bear came in and/or more bear clothes) and a clothed bear. my assumption is that they came to the mall for the sole purpose of going to BAB.

the second customers: DIFFERENT young (20s-30s) white straight couple and their single daughter (less than 10). the mother pointed out to her daughter a hello kitty plush and said that she used to have one like it. from my limited observation i don't think BAB collaborated with sanrio until a few years ago, so i'm putting this customer in the "adult who buys modern BAB out of nostalgia" category. nope, they've been doing collabs since 2006, with some drops in 2008 and 2009 before the more recent lines (thank you BAB wiki editors). so she might not have bought one since her childhood. this is still, however, an adult who obviously has nostalgia for the brand. the couple's daughter was interested in the toys on display but her parents redirected her saying they were just looking around and she couldn't get one today.

the third customers: young (20s) white straight couple. the woman dragged her entirely uninterested partner into the store. he was very obviously judging her for her interest in the toys. i was already leaving and he pissed me off so i didn't stick around to find out if nostalgia factored into her interest.

i did a couple loops of the store and inspected all the bears they had on display. the sanrio and pokemon (well it was just pikachu) plushes seemed to be of a higher quality fabric. like, if you're a fursuiter, my main audience surely, the difference between craft store faux fur and luxury shag. uhh but they still all kind of sucked i'm ngl like even those had just. lumpyish patterns, seams with fur stuck in them, strange overall shape/top-heavy, etc. the only other note i have on the plush themselves is there was a. "pineapxolotl". pineapple axolotl

i didnt spend much time looking at the bear clothes section because there were actual children looking at them and i didnt want to get in their way. i briefly noted that some of the clothes were cute but then remembered i could literally sew all of these except for like, the sneakers. but now i'm thinking why would. i want a toy on my bed to have hard rubber shoes. toy is for cuddle?

i don't have much to say about any feelings that the experience gave me, since there were very limited feelings i had. i did however circle back to the bear display wall maybe 3-4 times, as if i'd just missed seeing something more noteworthy. but in the end i hadn't, or i continued to miss it. i think both of those are true. there was nothing more noteworthy, since the store has experienced a fundemental change from its former self as the youtuber above expresses. and my gaze passed over the 'spark' that might've been there, because i was too jaded against capitalism from the hours-long mall experience to feel any nostalgia or interest.

youtube recommended me an hour long video where someone rants about the decline of build a bear as a brand and I decided to watch maybe 15 minutes or so not for any insight, but instead as a form of people watching. what kind of life would an adult my age lead to feel that kind of consumer betrayal? not because build a bear is cringe but because build a bear is expensive. ridiculously expensive. the only time in my life where i walked into a build a bear and did not immediately walk out was when my old-old ex took me there for my 18th birthday and got me a twilight sparkle plush because we were looking at the cost of these custom bears and their clothes and going "holy fuck whaaaaat". a build a bear ride or die is built very different from me.

you probably deduced from the thumbnail (as well as from the nature of these consumer grievance type videos) that the thing this person has an issue with is the overall modern day "aesthetic". the store has downsized considerably in the last decade and resembles a regular toy store moreso than its older workshop-like setup. at one point she near-tearily mulls over how many malls only have a "dinky little kiosk" instead of an actual location. she hates the fluorescent lights and minimalist style shelves. she doesn't get why things that were once painted surfaces are now interactable screens. she gushes over the things she loved about the old store as if she's seeing it all for the first time in between talking extensively about her personal relationship to certain accessories and plush types. she hates that so many of the plushies are just licensed characters now. she misses the experience of being in the store as a child. she misses the bears from her childhood that she regretfully gave away. she doesn't like that these things that meant so much to her are going away and that she doesn't know how to get them back. at one point, she mentions that she tried to go back to the store a few years ago and (pausing repeatedly as if hovering above some kind of inscrutable alien truth) that buying a bear and paying $30+ for clothes "just wasn't...fun?" but immediately combats the instinct to investigate these feelings by arguing that this is the store's fault for not being fun. that build a bear is failing because it is not more accommodating to adults.

with any other youtuber who was confounded by the fact that novelty things from their childhood did not survive the forces of the market 15+ years later (and had to shuffle around its brand aesthetics to see what would maybe make investors happy while also minimizing cost) I would probably have just stopped watching at the 15 minute mark, but I found myself fascinated by this humorism powered hydraulic performance. she simmers in nostalgia happily, reliving her memories with every image of old build a bear she superimposes over the screen, before snapping into a state of sadness and confusion once the image has been taken away. it takes about 25 minutes in for her to start verbalizing her frustration towards all modern day toy aesthetics. "why did they do this? what makes them do this? why does everything look like this now? I don't understand" she's less asking a question and more unable to reconcile that a part of her life which once possessed tangibility no longer exists, and the transactional nature of her relationship with build a bear is what specifically makes her unable to make peace with this. she cannot accept that she cannot buy back this time that was lost because her time as a child in build a bear was something that she purchased in the first place. the experience is tied so much to build a bear as an enterprise and transaction that to simply separate what she liked about it and pursue something that resembles that is inconceivable, and instead that the only choice is to. retvrn to build a bear.

This is a Completely Opinion list, and if you dont agree, that is fine. I am just explaining my views on each song.

None of these songs are bad, all of them are solid. This is just a List of my least fav to my most fave.

I will be ranking the song based on Lyrics, Beat, in story context, and Out of Story listen-ability.

So with that all said. Lets Go down the list.

7. Sodapop

The introduction song to the Saja boys, Whats funny is that this counts as a Villain song.

Now, the context is that this is a street performance to advertise their appearance on a show. Its a great intro to each gimmick of the boys, and the way they are stealing the girls fans.

It is an infection beat and it is a By the numbers Kpop song. That being said. Outside of that one part of the song, its not really that memorable. Its generic, its catchy, but Its not something I find myself listening when I revisit the songs from this movie.

Its actually the only song on the list that I dont love. Its fine. But its WAY overhyped

I think I agree with Rumi, the song doesnt fit what they needed to beat the Saja boys.

Oh its a catchy song, and I think Lyrically it is BRUTAL and it is a classic diss track.

Whats clever is that it started as a Take down on the Saja boys but it changed to one about Rumi. And the song really shows the mental agony Rumi goes through.

And the in context version where Rumi gets exposed is BRUTAL.

I do think its a great song, but I cant unsee how Hurt Rumi was at the end and it kind of stops me from enjoying it as much

I really love this duet. It captures both of the mental states of the other, listening to the Lyrics, you can see Rumi is conflicted trusting him so much, while Jinu WANTS to be that open with her but cant, but acknowledges that she brings out a part that he lost. But he is being honest, despite not telling her everything.

Its not a catchy bop but it is a cute love song and their voices go so well together.

Both want to escape their pasts, and both want to be the other's escape but but Jinu is the block.

This song is basically a conversation, and while its great for character and can be a nice listen, it is also keeping it down here.

4. What it Sounds Like

I wanted to put this one higher, I wanted to love this song more. And Lyrically I think it has the most moving lines, in the context of the movie, its the song that helped save everyone and Huntrix. But it doesnt really do anything musically amazing outside of being and emotional beat for the movie. Its touching and I think Rumi owning up to everything was a beautiful bit.

"My voice without the lies, this is what it sounds like." Is a beautiful line.

"The song we couldnt write, this is what it sounds like" Great lines.

But just listening to it without the visuals leaves it missing something.

This is the song that I feel like "what it sounds like" if it was a planed out song.

The music video slaps. But I love How hard the lines are in this.

Pick a line in this and I guarantee it slaps.

"I was a problem child, but I got too wild, but now thats how Im getting paid." Solid.

This song does really show the singer for Rumi demonstrating the vocal chops.

If This is What it sounds like mixed with Golden, it might be my favorite song.

But the flaws in this song is that we dont delve as much into the other girls as Rumi gets to in this song. And also the lack of a real ending.

Though Lyrically it is one of the best.

2. Your Idol

The Saja boys almost won with this one, and they took over spotify with this one. And to be honest, this one is fighting against my fave song.

Its a real villain song. The music worms its way in your ear, the Lyrics are strong and vile. It is a Villain song and you can tell that Jinu and the boys really put their all in this one.

"You gave me your heart, now Im taking your soul."

Thats diabolical.

But what really kills it is just how the chorus slaps so hard.

It is everything I love in a villain song, but I would have loved just a hint of remorse from Jinu, maybe a sign that he was reluctant in doing what he was doing. But thats a nitpick.

Overall, it has infested my brain, if not for one song.

This is the song that convinced me to watch the full movie. The opening number gave all the personality to the girls, you got to understand their dynamic, what they do, and how they are cute, dorky and absolute badasses.

The song is also an earworm with the BEST lyrics in the movie. The Chorus slaps, and I am cheering with the crowd.

"Fit Check for my Napalm era." Has been living rent free in my brain ALL WEEK

The fact that this song ISNT number 1 in most countdowns is a crime.

Its catchy, it has an amazing beat, the rap is on point. The lyrics and in universe context is phenominal.

They killed demons on stage. That is dope.

Very angsty

Heartbroken - James Potter x Reader

You had never tried harder to avoid James Potter in your life. Not even when he wouldn’t stop bothering you about a cup of tea or pestering you for a walk. No, this time it was personal.

You’d felt sure you were going to be the talk of the school by the next morning. There was no way Sirius Black could keep his mouth shut about something as juicy as this. So you secluded yourself in your dorm, thankful for the two sweet days of relief the weekend gave you. 

When Monday reared its ugly head, you’d scampered down to lessons just in time to not be late so as to minimise the amount of people you’d have to see. Where you would have usually put your hand up and answered questions, you kept quiet, huddled down in your seat, trying to draw the least amount of attention as possible. You could swear you could feel eyes all over you and whispers all around.

You squeezed your eyes shut. You’d spent a concerning amount of the weekend worrying what people would say. Dreading their judgy stares and harsh words. Of course, Potter wouldn’t get any of this though. He’d get a bloody congratulations. You fumed at that. Life was so unfair. 

Life was even more unfair when you walked out of your last lesson of the day to see James Potter hanging around outside. You’d purposefully been the last person out of the classroom, so to see him loitering filled you with dread. Pathetically, you told yourself he might be there to talk to the teacher, until he looked up and your eyes locked. 

You froze, a deer in headlights. 

He looked, absurdly, equally as shocked for two whole seconds before he shook himself and began to say something. Except he never got to because those precious two seconds he wasted gave you the perfect time to flee. 

Behind you, you could hear James’ bleat of “Wait, please,” but you ignored him. Of course you did. You could never trust him again. 

James stared after your retreating figure, cursing. He was able to guess most of the thoughts running through your head and was mentally kicking himself for them. 

He’d wanted to tell you just how sorry he was that Sirius had found you two, how that had not been the plan at all and how he was actually pretty angry with Sirius for handling the situation the way he did. He had had to heavily threaten Padfoot into silence about the whole ordeal, but he did it for you. If you heard anything even remotely related to what the two of you had done you were sure to run for the hills. 

He didn't want that.

For the next few days you were tense, waiting for the knut to drop, for someone to come and ask you about your little romp with Potter. But no one did. So you waited a bit more. Nothing. You were almost shocked that James himself hadn’t stood on Gryffindor breakfast table to announce it to the rest of your classmates. 

Your shoulders began to drop with relief. You calmed down. You were sure he’d want to entertain everyone by revealing who was at the bottom of the list. But, maybe not. Maybe he was embarrassed about it and wanted to sweep it under the rug. That was probably the best outcome for you. Just to let it go, pretend it never happened.

You had also thought there was no way James had been able to muzzle Sirius, to get him to act like nothing had happened, but maybe he had. 

You were wrong. 

You were minding your own business walking down the corridor when Sirius Black approached you. You sensed him before you saw him. Heard his shoes clomping down on the stone, the various charms he had attached to them jingling. Smelt his cologne, all manly and sexy, wafting down the empty hallway. Your shoulders hunched, you tried to walk faster, but you were no match for his long legs. 

He caught up with you. “So.”

“Leave me alone Black.” You said through gritted teeth. You still didn’t turn to look at him. He fixed that by jumping forward and into your way, forcing you to stop in your tracks. 

You glared at him. 

He pressed on, amused by your irritation. “So, how was it?” 

You certainly hadn’t been expecting that question. You’d expected teasing or mockery, not interrogation. 

You looked up at him, confused. He rolled his eyes. 

“C’mon,” He continued, “Was Prongs as good as you’ve heard?” He wiggled his eyebrows, “‘Cause I know you’ve heard about him.” 

You swallowed. Was he really interested in his best friend’s sex life? You supposed you would be too, if yours was as interesting. 

You were just about to respond in confirmation of all the whispers when a thought popped into your head. A small thought. A simple one really. Only one word. Except the weight it held was astronomical. 

You debated it for all of a millisecond. You were compromising your anonymity but maybe, by embarrassing James as much as he had you, you could get a sliver of revenge. 

You looked Sirius square in the face. “No.” 

You watched his eyebrows shoot up his forehead quicker than McGonagall hounding after a student without their homework. 

“No?” He confirmed. 

“No.” You said firmly, there was no going back now. “Potter was the worst shag I’ve ever had. He flopped around like a dead fish for about four minutes before he said he’d finished. I didn’t know we’d started.“ You paused for dramatic effect, “He couldn’t even make me cum. Very disappointing.” 

You didn’t stick around to hear Sirius’ reaction, his open mouth of surprise was enough. You marched on, heart pounding, heart pounding. What can of flobber worms had you opened now? 

Behind you, Sirius’ cackling laughter filled up the corridor in your absence. 

You would be the first person to admit you hadn’t thought that through. Did Sirius actually believe you? Would he tell James straight away or sit on the information for a few days, biding his time? You gulped. Would James believe you? 

Probably not. You hadn’t exactly faked it. 

Now it was just the waiting game. You chewed your nails, chastising yourself for putting your mind in these anxious situations but what could be done now? You’d just have to wait for James Potter to explode. 

And explode he did. 

Unfortunately for James, probably fortunately for you, he exploded in the common room. 

You had been curled up next to the dark window, reading, keeping half an ear on the Marauders and their friends, who had congregated next to the fire. You still didn’t know when Sirius would drop the bomb so you had to be prepared at all times. Lucky for you. 

You were just getting sleepy, eyes barely focusing on the words in front of you when James shot up from his seat in the middle of his circle of friends, cheeks blazing. The rest of them were clutching one another with laughter, tears streaming down a couple of faces. You sat bolt upright, no drowsiness now. There was probably only one thing that could’ve caused a reaction like that. 

James’ eyes sought out yours in the room. 

You stared back, unafraid. This boy would not make you any more ashamed of yourself than you already had been. 

He stepped over his friends, who were still rolling around on the floor, and strode over to you. You waited, unblinking. He stopped right in front of your chair, a threatening tactic perhaps? 

“So.” He said heavily. His breathing was deep and fast. You vaguely thought he sounded like an out-of-breath bull. 

“I flopped like a fish did I?” His silky tone could only mean trouble. Definitely a threat. 

You did not look away from his gaze.

“Why so quiet about it Potter?” You said loudly, theatrically even. Everyone was going to hear this. 

You watched him falter a little, falling back. Perhaps he had thought he could bully you into retracting your words. Fat fucking chance. 

“Why shouldn’t I say anything about it hm? I’m only saying what happened. Is that so wrong? Why shouldn’t I talk about how you lasted four fucking minutes before calling it a day? Why is it only you that gets to talk about your escapades? Godric knows we probably haven’t been getting the whole story from you.”

As you said all of this, you had slowly risen out of your chair to face him, eyes shining brightly. Your voice rose with every word until you were borderline shouting and the whole common room didn’t mss a single word. Nobody spoke, no one dared to interrupt this glorious display. You could hear a pin drop as you dared James to respond, to deny all allegations. 

But would that only make him look more guilty? It only took one rumour to destroy a reputation, you’d seen that happen plenty of times before. Could this be James Potter’s downfall? 

James only looked at you, blinking slowly, as if he was confused. As the seconds ticked past and he stayed quiet, you began to feel worried. What on earth was going on in his head that was so complex he had to think this hard. You didn’t think he possessed enough brain cells to do that. 

His breathing slowed, though his cheeks were still flushed red. His lips parted slightly as he stared down at you. You were almost ready to falter when he simply turned away. He walked past his friends who now resembled a gang of squawking parrots, past all the other Gryffindors who were now whispering like their lives depended on it. No doubt this would be all over the school before breakfast tomorrow morning. He left through the portrait hole. 

You, on the other hand, didn’t quite know what to do with yourself now. Sure that had felt really really good in the heat of the moment, but now the fire had burnt out you could see what was left in the ashes. And you didn’t like it. 

Were you as bad as Potter and Black now? Starting socially ruinous, untrue, rumours for your own personal revenge. Sure, they’d probably started worse rumours than you, but that’s what made you feel self-righteous, made you think you were better than them. You felt around in your chest to check if this had really been worth seeing James’ dejected, confused face. 

No, it hadn’t.

What the fuck were you going to do now?  

The next few days were spent worrying about how best to apologise to James. You really felt truly shitty for having embarrassed him like that in front of everyone, even though it had soothed some small part of you. 

But, low and behold the boy was nowhere to be found. You kept a careful eye out for his unruly hair and listened carefully for his peals of laughter, but none came to you. He was never in the library, or the common room, or the grounds or at meals. Unless you had the same lesson, it was as if James Potter didn’t exist. 

Of course, that was only to you. The rest of the school had heard about your argument by now. You couldn’t walk from one class to the next without being glanced or pointed at. You’d never known so many people to actually know your name and recognise you in the corridors. You supposed this was what it felt like to be a Marauder; although they were known for their pranks while you were known for one big mistake. 

Because that’s what it was. A big, huge fucking mistake. You really should’ve left everything alone, let James Potter be, protected your own peace or whatever the fuck they said. But now, you had to live with this new side of yourself that you hadn’t known you had, nor did you like at all. 

You’d been meandering back up from the kitchens after a late night ice cream craving when you finally saw him. James Potter in the flesh. This was it, your chance. Gathering whatever courage you could find at this unholy hour, you hurried over to him. You were just about to call out his name when Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew appeared from seemingly nowhere, supporting an ill-looking Remus Lupin between them. 

You blinked. Stopped. How the fuck had they appeared in the middle of the hallway when you could’ve sworn half a second ago James was alone. This made things a lot more awkward. Still, you thought, moving forwards again, maybe James would like to hear you grovel in front of his friends. 

You just saw James stuff what looked like a cloak into his pockets when he looked your way and saw you. He visibly tensed, holding a hand up to stop the others and you winced. You’d really done a number on him. 

“James.” You said softly, “Can we talk?” 

“No.” The answer was swift and harsh. It battered your ears painfully. You blinked. Steeled yourself. Tried again

“Please? I really want to apolog-“ 

He cut you off. “I said no,” He said your name like it disgusted him, “Fuck off will you?” 

Even though it sounded like a question, it was clear it was a demand. James had glanced down at a piece of parchment before beckoning his friends to keep going, muttering to them, “If we’re quick we’ll get to Poppy before dawn.”

Despite the fact you were still reeling from James’ harsh words, concern quickly grew for Lupin. He was unable to stand on his own, his friends acting like crutches and now you were closer, it looked like he was covered in blood. His clothes, skin, hair, it was everywhere. 

Your brow furrowed and you hurried forwards, “Is he okay? Can I help?”

Sirius glared at you but James got there first. 

Swinging round with a growl, he said “It’s all under control, thank you very much, now fuck off to whatever hole you crawled out from before another rumour starts.” 

Ouch. Low blow but thats almost what you were expecting. Potter would have to try harder than that. 

You swallowed. “Please, just let me help.”

James exploded. He strode forward, right into your space, forced you to tilt your head all the way back to meet his angry eyes. 

“Get it though your thick fucking skull,” He snapped, “We don’t want you. I don’t want you. You’re at the bottom of the list for Godric’s sake, nobody wants you.” 

Tears filled your eyes. You blinked, embarrassed, but James saw he had hit you where it hurt and was eager to continue. 

“Y’know what I did with the money Sirius gave me? I took Rachel Robbins out to Hogsmeade for dinner before I fucked her in the alleyway until she couldn’t walk straight. And I loved every second of it.” His eyes were locked on yours, “Y’know what I think?” 

He was impossibly close now, voice dangerously low, “I think you’re jealous that I didn’t immediately fall in love with you when we fucked. Did you think we’d have some sort of instant connection?” He laughed humourlessly and you shrunk in on yourself, “You’re just another mark, babe, that’s all there is to it. Business is business. Game is game.” 

Remus groaned from behind you two and James’ head snapped back to his friends. It was clear where his priorities lay. He began to leave, before another idea seemed to strike him. “I’d stop reading so many stories if I were you, they seem to be giving you the wrong idea.”

With that final blow, he left. Returned to his friends and began guiding them away down the corridor. 

He left you standing there. Tears in your eyes, cheeks flushed, feeling even more stupid that when Sirius had found you two. At least then you could convince yourself that James hadn’t meant Sirius to do what he did. But now, there was no twisting those words. There was no more lying to yourself. 

You dreaded to think what the rest of the school would say when they heard about this. But deep down, something inside you had shattered irreparably at having your worst fear confirmed. 

Nobody wanted you. James Potter would make sure of that.

The way with which it navigates displaying all of the mens misogyny (which is varying in levels) where it manifests in their interactions with fujiko and how it comes to frame their view of her vs the way fujiko lives her life, her self assured nature about who she is and what she wants to do, where the show never ever demonises her or punishes her for her actions in some kind of comeuppance how some of the older stuff would frame her vs the men (cough part 2 when theyd make her seem stupid and just blindly betraying lupin and then everything blows up in her face and all the guys go heh.. thats what she gets!)

The show displaying just what about all five makes them so engaging and endearing, what ends up making their group function, what drives each of their lives on a level that actually gives the time to their individual thought processes. All while centring it around how Fujiko navigates the four of them (not Lupin!) WHILE ALSO BEING A PREQUEL TO PART 1 is insane. When women get to write and direct Lupin🤯🤯🤯🤯

Anyway. All that to say. Crazy how the blueprint on why fujiko is important and how good she can be when written with care and with a womans perspective in mind is Right There its crazay that it doesnt seem to influence alot of fanwork. So personally i dont think they really liked each other in the academy years (despite me wtiting fic where they sorta did whoops🤪), although the the foundation was there and they maybe might not have fully realized the depth of how much they cared. It truly was platonic, because they didnt bother to imagine it as much else.

When does Gray’s cognition of his own feelings start? I think when he meets her on the train to Paris. He is confronted with this grown up, beautiful woman that he cant reconcile with the girl he used to know. He’s attracted, but hes held back because of the way he used to view her. And he doesnt get enough time to work through any of this, obviously, due to the arrest & memory wipe debacle🫣

We can point to the opera ep as the first sign of overt interest. Gray has no memory of their baggage/friendship to have any reservations about pursuing Carmen. The only knowledge he has at his disposal is the fact that here’s this pretty lady in front of him, and that he can do something about it or not. Its not messy. Not from his POV at least. (But carmen’s!! Oof!!)

Where it gets complicated for Gray is obviously when he gets his memories *back.* Its obviously a high-stakes moment when he does because he goes from ACME custody to being back in VILE’s grip. A lot is happening, leaving not much time to contend with his feelings.

But now its confusing, because he *knows* he was attracted to Carmen in Sydney. He was pretty obvious about it, too. She hadnt seemed uninterested. But she also left him in the dark about quite obviously a lot.

But now Gray also remembers their old relationship and what Carm used to mean to him, back when she was blacksheep. Aka a little sister figure. Heres where it gets weird for him. Now, Gray’s a side character, so we dont get to see his internal struggle with how to view her like we do from Carmen. But i absolutely believe he went theough the same thing. Its messy AF here because Gray’s working out not only the dichotomy of his feelings towards carmen and balcksheep, but hes also fitting that in with his own choice to stay with VILE and the knowledge that she purposefully let him live a lie for more than a year.

By the time the Himalayas roll around, i think its clear hes set aside any ill feelings towards her. Contrary to (popular?) opinion, I dont think hes fully accepted that he loves her (romantically) yet. but Gray IS clear on the fact that she means the world to him, and that he doesnt wanna put her in harms way ever again. That confrontation ends the way it does, aka…explosively 😗 (dont block me pls).

Gray is left thinking that theyll be on the outs now forever.

Only for VILE to yank Carmen back into the fold. Suddenly, Gray is presented with everything hes ever wanted: the two of them not at odds but side by side. From the start, he feels odd about it, having gone through mindwiping himself, but he doesnt tell her the truth for the same reason Carmen didnt tell him: He truly believes this is the safest option for her, being under VILE’s wing instead of galivanting around as public enemy number 1.

During Evil!Carm’s 6 months back with VILE, he and Evil!Carm are BFFs and partners in crime again. She has no memories of him except from the island, so she doesnt remember him ever showing romantic intetest in her. Gray forces himself to be happy about having Carmen back and tamps down any new, alien feelings.

Due to 6 months transpiring off screen i think im allowed to interpret what happened there as i like 🙂‍↔️ so i think Evil!Carmen flirts with him at times. Tbf, She flirts with everyone, its one of the “carmen” tendencies that the mindwiping didnt bother circumventing. But its different when its with him, because of what they already obviously mean to one another. Its not harmless. Evil Carmen is devoid of empathy for much, but she still has a soft spot with Gray.

When she shows any romantic inclination, Gray is reminded of his own repressed feelings for her. I’d like to think that he flirts back (its his personality) but he shuts it down from ever escalating further out of his own version of the “sHeS lIkE a SiStEr To mE” crash out, because hes confused not only about THIS but also if carmens really fully there to begin with. It feels wrong, initiating things with someone who isnt fully themself.

I think when hes confronted with his internal want to reciprocate whatever Carmens trying to do is when hes forced to realize: Hes loves her, and not in a friend way. So to answer your question, i think he mostly realizes sometime during the 6 months evil period. Closer towards the end i would say.

All the while, his discomfort with allowing her to remain mindwiped builds and builds upon itself. When Gray catches Carmen crossing lines she swore to never cross, lines that she literally upended his and her own lives for, thats when he finally makes up his mind to save her.

Gray, when hes fully himself, is not someone who does the right thing. None of VILE are. For whatever reason, life shaped him into a person who discards morals when they get in the way of his personal advancement. But the one wild card in the face of his standard motivations is the lady in red. The one thing that confuses him more than anything else is what he feels for Carmen.

For so much of the show, Gray and Carmen are at odds, even if he doesnt even know it, split apart by their different outlooks on life. But in the end, Gray chooses her over himself.

When he helps bring her memories, he doesnt mind dying (by her hand or VILE’s should he fail), getting arrested, being kicked out of the only thing close to a family hes got, as long as it means he can bring her back. And he isnt doing it so that he can have a relationship with her guilt-free. Even when things work out, even when the opportunity for reconciliation is offered, Gray makes the active choice to walk away. He believes that whatever they have, no matter how much it means to him, is too broken to fix. (Biased but, BS i say!)

Although Gray may have realized his feelings for Carmen earlier, i think this is the point where he fully *accepts* them. At the very, very end, where the possibility of meeting her again is banished.

They dont account for the person in trans people, the person who may have totally different desires, boundaries, and ideas to communicate.

This is the difference between a chaser and someone whos is attracted to trans people: you must remember the people part. If youre treating trans possible-sexual partners as whole people, who can consent and discuss and remove consent and have their own desires and belong to a group of people with huge anatomical, sexual, and personal variety, then you are not a chaser my friend.

You just have good taste.

Also, anon, you may want to spend some time thinking about why seeing trans people makes you so excitable, even/especially when it isnt sexual attraction. Is it because youre cis but also queer, and their presence reassures you that things are safe? Do you admire them? What is it about them you admire? Are those qualities you wish you had in yourself? Is it possible that the presence of trans people excites you because you could be questioning your gender, but maybe havent been ready to admit that to yourself yet? Is the excitement actually aspiration to be like them? I'm not saying youre trans and dont realize it, Im saying that when our brains keep returning to certain trains of thought, its helpful to dig deeper and find out why we're so fascinated. It could be any number of answers to those questions, but its the *asking* of it all that helps us. Give it a shot when you have some time and see if something else may be there. Might be, might not, and either way is okay. Youre still not being a chaser or a creep. That you even cared enough to ask trans people for their thoughts shows me that you arent dehumanizing them.

I feel the need to watch this in a room where my baby brothers aren't in. And again - this moment proves why their relationship is built on physical touch. them just breathing and 'looking at each other'. they are romance at its peak. they are so awkward with each other.

A: "There's my girl! Oh, I knew you'd come." like I said, she knows her dragon.

As someone who is terrified of losing her sight, this episode is so scary to think about.

he knows HER SO WELL. He just knows she's Astrid so therefore she will always be ready to fight. I love how hiccup and toothless will do anything for her including doing what she hates; protecting her.

this actually makes me sort of emotional. They did grow up together - she was the first person to be trusted with his secrets. Before anyone else, it was Hiccup and Astrid. Them just holding hands because they can and they will. I am very happy.

HIM TACKLING HER TO PROTECT HER. AND HER JUST HOLDING ON TO HIM. THEM HOLDING EACH OTHER - LITERALLY WRAPPED IN EACH OTHER'S ARM.

any headcanons/fanfic?? on how keys and knives would have gone without rebellion. there are just soooo many possibilities to talk about like aksjxiewj where do i even start lmaooo??? like with gihun and jungbae. how would it go if they were both in red teams or they both were in blue teams. then if gihun was in read team and jungbae was in blue team and vise versa (haven't even accounted inho into this and how he would try to fuck gihun over in these possibilities). i really like s2 but after watching the 4th game maannn i wishhh everyone had played it. it was the first game to not be group based and even the same voter base was against each other. {also i know this would be repetitive of s1 marbles but if daeho was gonna go through that change just imagine him killing jungbae. poor jungbae just now he was weary of inho not trusting him and now another person from the group turned out be a completely different person :( }

{gihun and inho scene just like marbles ones where inho tells gihun it's ok and tells gihun to stab him. which i was u know making fanfic mentally and thought wait a minute just imagine if this triggered gihun actually remembering the marble game and imagining inho as ilnam. he would soooo wanna stab his ass and it is just so mwah mwah for me} ghaaa i wanna talk about so many more possibilities but wanna hear about ur thoughts first {also wanna talk about how gihun would have helped junhee during birth}

let's assume the teams are all the same, so red has gihun, junhee, geumja, and blue has myunggi, yongsik, hyunju, daeho. with inho and jungbae, i'd say inho gets blue and jungbae gets red.

now, we have a bunch of possibilities, but i think inho, manipulative bastard that he is, would either remain on the blue team so he could try to force gihun to kill him later on. and gihun would for sure remember what he had to do to ilnam and probably not want to do it at all, not until inho actually goads him to it and maybe even drops some info he should not know, like ilnam's name or saying "kill me like u did with the old man in your games". gihun would realize he never told inho that and get super suspicious and possibly realize that youngil isnt who he says he is....

inho could also switch with someone to be team red and be with gihun as he is forced to murder someone. and i think he'd try to switch with jungbae, which would freak out jungbae even more bc he knows what inho is capable of, but jungbae would refuse. he'd say that he wants to protect gihun and help him and if he's on the blue team he can't do that (i love jungbae down, but as a former marine i'm sure killing comes more easily to him than to gihun).

now, inho can't switch with him, so who would be switch with? junhee would be an obvious choice. if she doesnt trade with myunggi, that means that he doesnt go on that fuckass killing spree and doesnt end up killing hyunju. so, junhee is now blue and inho is red.

i do think daeho would consider switching with jungbae but he wouldn't have the courage. so, everything would be kinda like canon, except gihun isnt hunting down daeho and he has to kill someone to pass the games. he, inho and jungbae are all on the hunt and gihun would be horrified to have to do it (like he was in tug of war) but he'd realize that he needs to survive... meanwhile, inho would be too happy abt gihun killing someone and jungbae would notice it bc he's been keeping an eye on inho and would tell gihun abt what happened in mingle.

now, we do have a third secret option for the team - gihun and inho switch. inho is like "oh gihun i know you're too kind to kill, let me do it" and blah blah blah so gihun is like "omg my knight in shining armor" and he'd give inho cow eyes bc he's so in love its sickening

inho would hold off on killing someone until the last second bc he wants gihun to be stressing out abt him lmao and gihun is with the girls, wanting to help them along with daeho, bc them separating makes no sense in this scenario. which means that gihun will now see the baby's birth, along with daeho bc it annoyed me how he and junhee didnt speak a single word to each other in s3 :/

bc there are two other ppl, hyunju wouldn't go off alone searching for the door and so myunggi wouldn't be able to get the drop on her. maybe they have a fight of some sort and inho arrives at that moment to protect gihun and his team, and ends up killing myunggi before he can kill gihun or hyunju. jungbae is right behind him and he kills namgyu, which means that our beloved team all passes the game!!! 💖💖💖
