Since I don't rly have preference for big nails bc I find them unhygienic I heard something called "wudu nail rings" which are popular by muslim women bc they can take them off while praying. I'm so happy

YES OMG. I went to an anime convention a few months ago and saw SO many cheap bootlegs being sold as if they were authentic items. Being an experienced collector, I have a good eye for bootlegs so it didn't affect me, but I couldn't help but think of all the people who were duped into buying a crappy $30 bootleg that they could have gotten on Aliexpress for like $2.
#the most egregious case was this one person selling these beautiful light-up displays of fake bonsai trees with figures perched on them#they were going for well over $100 each#but when I actually looked at the figures it was obvious they were cheap bootlegs that probably cost the seller less than $10#the light up displays were probably from AliExpress or Temu as well#it just pissed me off because finding authentic figures for relatively cheap is very possible on sites like Yahoo Auctions Japan#but it's not as easy and cheap to use a proxy as it is to just order directly through a site like Temu#so guess what people choose to do instead#dropshipping#anti dropshipping#anime#figure collecting

Good morning! I recently came across your beautiful plate with the unicorn breaking out of the garden. I would love to adapt it into an embroidery design for my personal use, a decorative hoop piece. Would that be okay? If not I of course understand.
Hello!
Absolutely, I do not mind at all. but I would love it if you’d send me pictures once it’s finished!
this goes for other artists too, if you want to make your own version of one of my pieces, please do, and please share it with me.
#I love seeing other artists taking inspiration from my art#to the point that they want to make their own 🤍#I love seeing my pottery adapted into paintings and cross stitch#companies who want to print out cheap copies can fuck right off however lol#but copying other artists is an important way to develop your own style as an artist#you figure out what feels right and what doesn’t#and you gain a deeper understanding of that artist imo#you can look at and admire a painting and know it#but to copy it and make your own you will learn more—how it was made and how much time it took#and how much skill and practice it took!#I know a lot of artists feel very protective of their art and in the age of temu I get it#but another artist making a copy is so different#ask#asks

I don't understand people who buy things they don't need.
#txt#My mom just blew like $200 on a dresser (from temu of all places) and a heater#when she already has a dresser#(a solid wood one#which she is replacing with a cheap temu plastic one) and a working heater. Then she tries to dump#her old stuff on everyone else#but nobody else needs it#because we also already have clothes storage and a heater. Why are you buying things you already have??#and replacing them with something cheaper that wont last as long!#growing up poor has made me very careful with money#she grew up poor and seems to want to buy everything that she sees for some reason#which we can not afford to do#to be clear i am talking about buying something that you already own#that is functional and in good condition#just for the sake of it#not as in like...buying yourself something like food or entertainment that you do not already have even if you do not 'NEED' need it

Howdy, my name is Critter. Have y'all heard of this lil thing called Craftivism? Here are 5 types of Punk/DIY Crafts I think we need to embrace, sooner rather than later!
Crochet/Knitting
Yarn and crochet/knitting supplies are relatively easy and inexpensive to get your hands on, and learning to crochet/knit is relatively easy with video tutorials. Once you learn the basics, you can create patches and clothing items that support certain causes. You can also do yarn-bombing (essentially graffiti using crochet/knitting) as a way to spread awareness about certain issues. Here are the patterns I listed above:
LGBTQ Pride Keychains
BLM Patch
Palestine Flag Heart
LGBTQ Pole Wrap
Womens March Hat
Pins
All you need is something hard and sturdy to act as the base for your pin (bottle caps work best), soda tabs + a safety pin, and some glue to secure everything. Paint or decorate them however you please. Let people know who you are and what you stand for.
Kandi
While Kandi can be a way to express yourself and your identities, it is also a way to make community. Kandi-trading is huge in the EDM scene, and it is a huge part of why that community is so tight. You don’t need to make anything elaborate, especially to start out - just get some cheap pony beads from the dollar store, some letters, make some pretty bracelets. Keep them, trade them, give them away.
Embroidery
Embroidery is a very fun and useful skill to develop, as you can basically put whatever you like wherever you want. Mend your socks, personalize your jacket, make some patches. Stop buying those shitty embroidered clothes from temu or shein and make your own one-of-a-kind pieces. Learning embroidery is pretty easy, just get some fabric, some thread, a needle, and go ham.
Zines
Zines are not only a way to spread awareness about certain issues, but they are a way to express yourself and talk about your personal experiences. I’ve included instructions on how to fold a zine, as well as some examples of zines. If you would like to learn more about zines & their history, I recommend @/decolonizationcoven on Tiktok. If you would like more examples of zines, check about any social media platform, but especially Pinterest. Lastly, if you would like inspiration for zines, Canva has lots of templates of zine layouts that are easy to replicate.

Inktober 2024 day 1: paw
I promised myself I'd do inktober this year, even though I don't have all that much time and I haven't been drawing etc etc. I saw someone carving erasers online and thought oh, that's something I can probably do.
Turns out not every eraser is good for carving and not every cheap tool is good for carving even if it says on the packaging that's precisely what it's for, and even once you have acceptable tools and non-crumbling erasers, you still have to remember that it's now October and therefore inktober.
#ink and cheap ass linocut tool on temu eraser#in honor of a very good girl who hates getting her nails clipped#I have a list of like 50 prompts that's just a ripoff of about 7 different inktober prompt lists with some of my own thrown in the mix#and I'll just decide each day which one to do based on the vibes and time available#my phone also refused to take a normal image of this#like sorry I don't have a lightbox my dude but can we make the light less pink#inktober#art#artists on tumblr#inktober 2024#linocarving#eraser carving

beauty on a budget for someone new to the lifestyle?
since you’re only starting out, you’ll probably want to focus on affordable products and diy and at home beauty treatments.
you can get affordable skin care products from brands like cerave, cetaphil, and the ordinary. you’ll find all your essential cleansers, serums, exfoliators and moisturizers. you can order facial sheet masks in bulk cheap from amazon. you can also use aztec secret healing clay as a clay masque. skip the guasha altogether and follow a youtube tutorial for face sculpting massages instead.
good quality affordable makeup brands I used when I was nearly broke included e.l.f., nyx, wet n’ wild, maybelline, and makeup revolution. look into some other drug store brands within your budget and check reviews before you buy anything so you don’t waste your money. get generic beauty blenders and powder puffs, you’ll be replacing them often anyway so it’s best to get them cheap. you can buy cheap big makeup brush sets on amazon that’ll last a long time if you clean them regularly and take care of them.
press on nails and home manicures / pedicures will save you a ton of money and time. find a good manicure kit and pumice stone. buy a dollar store basin and some epsom salts to soak your feet. for press on nails I usually get mine from temu or brands like kiss and impress. if you just want to paint your natural nails, get a gel polish like l.a. colors color craze gel or sally hansen miracle gel. if you want to go the extra mile, invest in the supplies and learn how to do your own acrylics or gel manicures.
learn how to wax, shape, and tint your own eyebrows. you can buy an affordable diy wax kit like this one and use youtube tutorials on how to find the most flattering brow shape. (as a bonus, the hard waxing kit can also be used to remove unwanted hair on the rest of your body.) you can also find cheap brow tinting kits that usually last up to five uses at sally’s beauty supply and various other stores online.
if you want your lashes done, you can either get really, really good at applying a strip lash – my go to affordable brands are ardell and kiss – or you can invest in some bulk lash clusters and the falscara diy eyelash extension kit. figure out what lash placement will best compliment your features, then watch lots and lots of youtube tutorials on how to use it and practice, practice, practice. they take some getting used to.
when it comes to hair care, the very first thing you want to do is figure out your hair type with a quiz like this one and find what it needs to look and feel healthy. I have 2A hair, so I would pretty much always spring for nexxus for something moisturizing and lightweight, but I’ve heard great things about ogx, shea moisture, not your mother’s, maui moisture, l’oreal elvive, and garnier whole blends which are great for other hair types, densities, and textures. all these brands carry a wide variety of products from shampoo, to leave in treatments, to hair masques, to curl cream — you get it. again, read reviews. you can also use a cotton t-shirt to dry and plop your hair instead of spending money on a microfiber towel, and a satin scarf wrapped around your head to protect your hair while sleeping instead of a silk bonnet and pillow case.
if you’re into styling your hair, two of my favorite methods are heatless styling and blowouts. for heatless styling, you may not even need to purchase any new styling tools. I started out using this heatless robe curl method and eventually started doing other heatless styling methods like the ones on this playlist once I started buying more tools, and did styles like these when I didn’t feel like setting my hair at all. for styles that require heat, a highly suggest investing in a dyson airwrap – which can do pretty much everything – so you don’t end up spending even more on an arsenal of hot styling tools.
good luck, sugar
xoxo

Witch/Tarot PSA: DO NOT BUY COUNTERFEIT DECKS.
What is a counterfeit deck?
These are “decks” are illegal manufacture of actual real tarot decks that are not created by the actual publishing houses or the artist or author. These were copy pasted terribly on small cheap card stock in plastic folded boxes rather than the regular boxes that the publishing company would use. These cards will not sometimes credit the author or artist, do not use the copyrighted company which is illegal and it will not come with a guidebook but a QR code on the back.
Why are they bad?
Yes buying regular and legit decks can be expensive in my country US it’s about $30 if the deck is brand new. Not that expensive but if you can’t spare $30 save your money or wait till they go on sale. Tarot is a luxury not a necessity remember that. When one buy these decks their money will not go to the artist or author or even publishing company but a Chinese factory most likely a sweatshop that are treating their workers terribly. I’d rather pay full priced for an artist and authors hardwork that they deserve knowing they put their blood, sweat, and tears for. Also creating these inauthentic decks harms the environment as well.
Keep in mind publishing houses like Llewelyn or Us Game systems are not big, their not penguin books or Harper Collins these are small publishing companies that need to have a percentage of the sales.
Author Ciro Marchetti known for his Glided Tarot said that he doesn’t want to continue his art career for tarot because of this reason, of his deck being illegal pirated and sold for a very cheap price that isn’t worth it because the quality is terrible and unethical. It affects the artists and authors mostly because their work is being produced by companies that they won’t get rightfully paid for.
Also here’s one of the most messed up thing I discovered, I love my small metaphysical shops and my family likes to explore all kinds of shops in my state of Connecticut. But when I go into a shop and I see those counterfeit decks now unlike Temu where they sell them for less than $10 these owners would sell them for full price. This is a scam because people who are unaware just brought a pirated item thinking it’s legit and actually produced by an actual publishing company when it’s a cheaply made deck and the pictures are terrible quality very pixelated. I get angry when I see these decks and I’m taking my business somewhere else.
There have been cases where people are selling AI versions of tarot decks for instance, The Dark Wood Tarot by Sasha Graham (wonderful deck highly recommend) the art was stolen and reused for a AI tarot deck that used the same name and everything. Beware of that and I know that isn’t a common but AI tarot exists so be careful especially on sites like Etsy, Etsy has a lot of AI decks, do your research and message the seller if possible at times the seller will even put in the bio of what it is their selling if it’s made from AI.
How to Prevent It
Spread awareness, US game systems made an excellent statement on counterfeit decks and telling customers how to spot them. If you see counterfeit decks in your metaphysical shop you can confront them if you want I know confrontations can be difficult especially for small businesses but again it’s important to bring it up even asking politely, “I noticed you have counterfeit decks and selling for full price why is that?” But if not take your business elsewhere maybe leave a review warning others about them. But I find it hard to believe that a lot of these shop owners don’t know what their doing when selling these decks, unless they’re very irresponsible or just don’t care about ethics of business or even laws of their business.
Cues when you are checking a counterfeit deck?
Does it have the artist’s and author’s name sometimes the person is both author and artist.
Does it come with a guidebook when the normal deck usually does. Some of these illegal decks will remove “guidebook” from the title and have a small QR Code on the back of these decks that’s your NUMBER ONE CLUE when you spot these decks THEY DO NOT HAVE GUIDEBOOKS BUT QR CODES FOR THE SAID GUIDEBOOK. THEIR VERY SMALL COMPARE TO THE AUTHENTIC DECKS.
Do they put the Publishing Company’s name for copyright? For instance those annoying US Game systems borders usually will have their copyright (within good reason to not let the cards to be ripped off that’s why you don’t see many us game system tarot rip offs). To spot the copyright title it’s on the box usually on the back, it will be small but it will have ©️ then the publishing company’s name.
Do you know of the tarot deck is a mini? Sometimes authors and publishers will republish regular decks for minis. Be sure the deck says mini or look up to see if the publishing company republished a tarot mini compare the decks if they match.

Hey, I saw your post about people being nice to "guests in the house" (which is honestly such a great way to put it). Could you explain more?
I've seen a lot on TikTok hearing about how China is amazing and has all these things ahead of America (which I don't completely disbelieve, but the perfection is concerning) so I'm just wondering if you know how much of what's being said is true.
Honestly the thing I hate the most is when western people who haven’t (and will never, because even if you go live in China you will not experience the same China as underprivileged Chinese people) experienced what it’s like to be Chinese speak over us and either tell us this country is irredeemably evil or Big Communist Wonderland (what communism? this country is super capitalist lmao).
I’m too tired to link a source for every single thing here, you simply have to take my word for it, as someone who has family and friends in China and observe current happenings on Chinese social media all the time), but a lot of the amazing things in China ARE true (more accessible & fast public transportation, lots of convenient things, ambulances not costing an arm and a leg etc.), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t downsides/hidden costs of things.
For instance, food delivery in China is super fast and super cheap, with a lot of stuff to choose from, which is good! But the delivery apps are incredibly exploitative (not saying food delivery isn’t kind of a problem in general due to capitalism), they actively punish delivery people for slower trips–I’ve even seen a thing trending about a year or two ago on how they’re timed and your own record can be used against you). If you search the key terms on weibo you see tons and tons of posts about this: https://s.weibo.com/weibo?q=%E7%BE%8E%E5%9B%A2%E5%8E%8B%E6%A6%A8. Here's an actual news article: https://www.163.com/dy/article/GC7M3EUI052184FQ.html
The same thing goes for a lot of stuff - it's insane to claim that everything Chinese ever was made in a sweatshop but inhumane labour conditions are very widespread. Beyond Temu and Shein which the west knows about, a lot of big companies have extremely unethical practices that arise from loopholes in the labour laws. Big tech companies are notorious for firing people right before ten years or so so that they don’t have to sign a permanent contract with their employees (sorry idk what the exact term is in English), they also have absolutely batshit insane work hours which is by no means legal but they’ve never gotten actual trouble for it because people are desperate and hey, everybody is doing it.
I would say healthcare in China in general is more accessible and cheap, but the flipside is because of the huge population there are simply Not Enough Doctors. I watch a bilibili channel featuring a group of Chinese ex- (the ones who quit did so because of how taxing it is) and current doctors, they talk about the pros and cons of the Chinese healthcare system a lot. The Chinese government is recently also pushing Chinese-made medication & medical equipment which is much cheaper (& therefore accessible), however their quality pale in comparison. It's becoming increasingly difficult to purchase more effective foreign drugs at public hospitals.
Above pictures (feel free to translate yourself):
this is a nurse on xiaohongshu talking about how the chinese-made syringes are poor quality (they broke), and how the new celecoxib (pain med I think) isn’t at all effective. More screenshots of comments sharing their experience
Two people talking about their negative experience with new Chinese hemodyalisis machines
And I won’t even attempt to get into the Chinese education system & how oppressive it is. In the ideal world country-wide entrance exams can ensure that everyone, no matter the rich or poor, have the same opportunity to get into good middle/high schools or universities, but I’m sure everyone can see the problem with mass standardised testing (e.g. the fucking ablelism). Rich people also get many. more opportunities to study outside of school so the equal opportunity thing isn’t even true. Not to mention, in order to vie for the top universities, a lot of parents enroll their children in extremely strict (called "military-style") schools where the hours are much longer, you aren’t allowed any personal freedom, and a lot of abuse at the hands of teachers occur. These schools are especially common in less-affluent provinces with bigger populations, as it’s objectively harder for these people to get into a good school compared to say, Beijing (known for having much easier exams than other regions lol). No sources here because this is also a thing that can be easily researched (by going on Chinese social media, if you are suspicious of traditionally western-biased news sources).
Ethnic minorities are also experiencing intentional assimilation, I have family from Inner Mongolia, I know the Mongol schools there are increasing the erasure of Mongolian from the curriculum. Same applies elsewhere. And the discrimination against ethnic minorities are pretty significant lol.
Another person in the reblogs of my xiaohongshu post has asked about the condition of Chinese queer people, so I’m not gonna elaborate here, but just know it’s real fucking bad. Recently I’ve seen asks for help on weibo by friends of Trans women who essentially got kidnapped by their families and sent to conversion "schools" (think American military-style boot camps) where there's a lot of physical/sexual abuse and even shock therapy.
As for government bs in general the covid lockdown was certainly an era lmao. Bolted doors QR codes as a method of mass-control forced removal from homes etc etc oh and how can I forget power-tripping sanitization personnel beating the left-behind pets of people forced into quarantine areas to death. Tons of accounts of people sick with things other than COVID left to fend for themselves (many died). Wuhan was obviously bad but Shanghai was also really really really really bad. And before people come for me I don’t agree at all with how the US and a lot of western countries handled things either.
This post is kind of all over the place because I’m rambling what I can remember as I wait for my screenprints to dry. Ultimately I just want to say that it means a lot to us Chinese people if others would look into things and help us remember the unsavoury things that the government will try to bury. Every day tons of call out posts get taken down, etc. a good majority of the population will happily pretend nothing ever happened and call us traitors 🤷 Already revisionism surrounding the covid era is happening so.
#passive mention of sexual/physical abuse at the very end (no details it's a single sentence) so#once again before non-chinese tankies come for me I must stress that I AM NOT CALLING MY OWN COUNTRY INHERENTLY EVIL#ask to tag#em speaks#long post#china#politics#world politics#tw death

Now Riot is storying who cares if NV has a Temu ring because who cares about the price. Nice of her to admit the ring is cheap. lol (I don’t think price matters but it is clear that NV very much cares about these types of things.)
She 1,000,000% cares!!
That's the only 1M she has. Because the ring sure as heck is not 🤣🤣. Even if she tried to tell tabloids different 😉.

i’m a bit behind on the timewarp au, so i’m sorry if someone’s already asked this! buuttt… how did everyones sense of fashion change in modern day?
me, sitting here in my decade's old hoodie and pikachu pajama shorts: yes, fashion
Hosea is a v subservient husband who wears anything his wife gets him. Sometimes he's the high fashion old man with the tailors pants and crisp shirt under a blazer. Sometimes it's the rattiest home-made sweater with dropped stitches that somehow matches his $4 slippers and he just looks even older than he is but so snug.
Arthur wears nothing but jeans and t-shirts with the occasional jacket unless someone else picks out clothes for him. He still wears cowboy boots.
Sean and Lenny are all walmart/shein/temu horrid patterns cheap clothing boys. The closest Sean gets to fashion is his pizza delivery uniform. Lenny learns a little bit about fashion by googling 'college outfits for men'.
Charles lives in heavy-duty trade jeans and plaid flannels. Flannel shirt. Too cold for flannel shirt? Black shirt under flannel jacket. Carries high-vis in his truck. Lumberjack core.
Kieran exclusively wears hoodies. Admittedly some are 'nice' hoodies but then comes the impossible challenge of finding pants he will willing wear. He needs to be warned if he's expected to leave the house 2 days in advance to do washing.
Javier lives for the concept of fashion and just looks like an instagram model at all times. Just a diva. It isn't until he shows up and corrects the 1899's gang sense of fashion they actually look decent.
John and Jack both fall in love with emo. Leather jackets, black jeans, chokers. Abigail spends so much on anti-fade laundry detergent.
Abigail and Karen end up with very similar fashion styles. The occasional summer dress but mostly pants, nice shirts - functional clothes for chasing around their demonic little girls. Abigail is a cardigan queen.
Grimshaw would burn her dresses if she could. She discovered the luxury of pants and never looked back. Still rocks a corset though. Anyone brave enough to catcall her is getting tased, pepper-sprayed or shot depending on her mood.
When Dutch isn't in the hospital he still wears basically just his canon era vests, buttoned shirts and fitted pants - in the hospital it's psych-ward issues jammies for him.
Molly looks like a cottage-core queen and has the rolling to pack it up.

Genuine question I'm gonna put out here:
I know shopping from Temu or Shein is bad, it's fast fashion, the clothes come from workers who are probably kids or not getting paid, their shit ends in landfills, it's all very obvious, right?
Okay, but what is the alternative? If you are broke as hell and need or want clothes, what do you do? I know shopping locally or supporting small businesses are good but you have to admit how out of range they are for a lot of people on or under the poverty line, at least most of them that I can find. Especially if you need a lot of clothes quickly (like if you've outgrown your old ones and have absolutely nothing to wear). Thrifting is also slowly becoming out of the question it seems? It can be cheap but if you live somewhere where the only "thrifting" place is Goodwill, which is jacking the prices every day, it also doesn't seem like a good option.
So what do you do? Does anyone know or have advice or anything at all?

I kept seeing this skirt on Pinterest, and I loved it, so I made it. Out of curiosity, I timed how long it took me. Without counting cutting and adjusting a basic skirt block and making and adjusting a mock-up, this skirt took me 14 hours to make. I fiddled with the pleats and decided I wanted the waist band to sit differently, and took it apart and restyled and put it back together, so maybe cut it down to 11 hours of actually producing the skirt, which includes French seams, and hand stitching the waistband, buttons and hem.
I used OKEO-TEX Tencel, this two and a half yards was around 60 bucks.
Tencel is a fabric produced like rayon, from wood or bamboo fibers broken down by a chemical process and extruded into a yarn that can be woven into fabric. The process for rayon uses highly caustic and poisonous liquids, which are very often dumped in a way that destroys the environment (Rayon cannot legally he produced in the US because it can’t meet *any regulations*) The process for Tencel uses slightly less toxic chemicals, but more importantly is circular, meaning 99% of the materials used are recovered and reused, and it’s fully biodegradable making it one of the more sustainable types of fabric, even though it is a man made fiber.
I used kind of cheap buttons, and together with thread and interfacing that’s probably another 10 dollars.
So 70 in materials.
A living wage in the Twin Cites is about 23 an hour. That’s what it takes just to make rent and buy food and get by.
At 23 an hour the labor cost is $253.00.
But I have years of experience, I used some advanced techniques, and a living wage should be a base salary, so let’s call a fair, mid career wage for producing a product everyone needs, clothes, 36 an hour.
Labor cost now $396.00
Plus 70 in materials: $466.00
A little wear and tear on machinery and tools and incidentals like needles and chalk, maybe add 2 more dollars.
This one-off bespoke skirt costs $468.00 dollars. Theoretically.
Mara Hoffman sells a very similar skirt, with a Tencel/Linen blend and a catch stitch hem for $405.
Darling has a Linen/Rayon Blend without fine finishing for $135
Amazon has a polyester version for $30
Temu has a polyester one for $12
The point here is not “Only buy 500 dollar skirts” but all clothes are hand made and that labor has value.
All labor has value. We all should buy fewer clothes, but we should all be able to afford decent clothes.
A 12 dollar skirt is *nonsense* but so is only being able to afford clothes that won’t last more than a couple washes.

Idk if I could ever fully get into goth because I feel like there are modern iterations at that very popular that I find to be like the worst aesthetic ever. Like when people are rockabilly goth 🤢 I hate that SO MUCH I can’t even say why it just irks me so bad. Or like the extremely cheap witchy goth aesthetic where they like buy a dress with a cheesy black cat print on it from hot topic. People who are obsessed with the nightmare before Christmas and have a jack skellington tattoo (why is this also lowkey the rockabilly vibe it doesn’t make sense). I just hate cheap goth and by cheap I don’t mean like thrifted because I feel like that’s one million times more authentic I mean like people who buy their whole goth fits off temu and then walk around looking like spirit Halloween. Very very annoying. The one modern iteration I do like is mall goth like that’s cool

See I’m pissed off. This pisses me off.
