Inktober 2024 day 1: paw

I promised myself I'd do inktober this year, even though I don't have all that much time and I haven't been drawing etc etc. I saw someone carving erasers online and thought oh, that's something I can probably do.

Turns out not every eraser is good for carving and not every cheap tool is good for carving even if it says on the packaging that's precisely what it's for, and even once you have acceptable tools and non-crumbling erasers, you still have to remember that it's now October and therefore inktober.

Witch/Tarot PSA: DO NOT BUY COUNTERFEIT DECKS.

What is a counterfeit deck?

These are “decks” are illegal manufacture of actual real tarot decks that are not created by the actual publishing houses or the artist or author. These were copy pasted terribly on small cheap card stock in plastic folded boxes rather than the regular boxes that the publishing company would use. These cards will not sometimes credit the author or artist, do not use the copyrighted company which is illegal and it will not come with a guidebook but a QR code on the back.

Why are they bad?

Yes buying regular and legit decks can be expensive in my country US it’s about $30 if the deck is brand new. Not that expensive but if you can’t spare $30 save your money or wait till they go on sale. Tarot is a luxury not a necessity remember that. When one buy these decks their money will not go to the artist or author or even publishing company but a Chinese factory most likely a sweatshop that are treating their workers terribly. I’d rather pay full priced for an artist and authors hardwork that they deserve knowing they put their blood, sweat, and tears for. Also creating these inauthentic decks harms the environment as well.

Keep in mind publishing houses like Llewelyn or Us Game systems are not big, their not penguin books or Harper Collins these are small publishing companies that need to have a percentage of the sales.

Author Ciro Marchetti known for his Glided Tarot said that he doesn’t want to continue his art career for tarot because of this reason, of his deck being illegal pirated and sold for a very cheap price that isn’t worth it because the quality is terrible and unethical. It affects the artists and authors mostly because their work is being produced by companies that they won’t get rightfully paid for.

Also here’s one of the most messed up thing I discovered, I love my small metaphysical shops and my family likes to explore all kinds of shops in my state of Connecticut. But when I go into a shop and I see those counterfeit decks now unlike Temu where they sell them for less than $10 these owners would sell them for full price. This is a scam because people who are unaware just brought a pirated item thinking it’s legit and actually produced by an actual publishing company when it’s a cheaply made deck and the pictures are terrible quality very pixelated. I get angry when I see these decks and I’m taking my business somewhere else.

There have been cases where people are selling AI versions of tarot decks for instance, The Dark Wood Tarot by Sasha Graham (wonderful deck highly recommend) the art was stolen and reused for a AI tarot deck that used the same name and everything. Beware of that and I know that isn’t a common but AI tarot exists so be careful especially on sites like Etsy, Etsy has a lot of AI decks, do your research and message the seller if possible at times the seller will even put in the bio of what it is their selling if it’s made from AI.

How to Prevent It

Spread awareness, US game systems made an excellent statement on counterfeit decks and telling customers how to spot them. If you see counterfeit decks in your metaphysical shop you can confront them if you want I know confrontations can be difficult especially for small businesses but again it’s important to bring it up even asking politely, “I noticed you have counterfeit decks and selling for full price why is that?” But if not take your business elsewhere maybe leave a review warning others about them. But I find it hard to believe that a lot of these shop owners don’t know what their doing when selling these decks, unless they’re very irresponsible or just don’t care about ethics of business or even laws of their business.

Cues when you are checking a counterfeit deck?

Does it have the artist’s and author’s name sometimes the person is both author and artist.

Does it come with a guidebook when the normal deck usually does. Some of these illegal decks will remove “guidebook” from the title and have a small QR Code on the back of these decks that’s your NUMBER ONE CLUE when you spot these decks THEY DO NOT HAVE GUIDEBOOKS BUT QR CODES FOR THE SAID GUIDEBOOK. THEIR VERY SMALL COMPARE TO THE AUTHENTIC DECKS.

Do they put the Publishing Company’s name for copyright? For instance those annoying US Game systems borders usually will have their copyright (within good reason to not let the cards to be ripped off that’s why you don’t see many us game system tarot rip offs). To spot the copyright title it’s on the box usually on the back, it will be small but it will have ©️ then the publishing company’s name.

Do you know of the tarot deck is a mini? Sometimes authors and publishers will republish regular decks for minis. Be sure the deck says mini or look up to see if the publishing company republished a tarot mini compare the decks if they match.

learn how to wax, shape, and tint your own eyebrows. you can buy an affordable diy wax kit like this one and use youtube tutorials on how to find the most flattering brow shape. (as a bonus, the hard waxing kit can also be used to remove unwanted hair on the rest of your body.) you can also find cheap brow tinting kits that usually last up to five uses at sally’s beauty supply and various other stores online.

if you want your lashes done, you can either get really, really good at applying a strip lash – my go to affordable brands are ardell and kiss – or you can invest in some bulk lash clusters and the falscara diy eyelash extension kit. figure out what lash placement will best compliment your features, then watch lots and lots of youtube tutorials on how to use it and practice, practice, practice. they take some getting used to.

when it comes to hair care, the very first thing you want to do is figure out your hair type with a quiz like this one and find what it needs to look and feel healthy. I kept seeing this skirt on Pinterest, and I loved it, so I made it. Out of curiosity, I timed how long it took me. Without counting cutting and adjusting a basic skirt block and making and adjusting a mock-up, this skirt took me 14 hours to make. I fiddled with the pleats and decided I wanted the waist band to sit differently, and took it apart and restyled and put it back together, so maybe cut it down to 11 hours of actually producing the skirt, which includes French seams, and hand stitching the waistband, buttons and hem.

I used OKEO-TEX Tencel, this two and a half yards was around 60 bucks.

Tencel is a fabric produced like rayon, from wood or bamboo fibers broken down by a chemical process and extruded into a yarn that can be woven into fabric. The process for rayon uses highly caustic and poisonous liquids, which are very often dumped in a way that destroys the environment (Rayon cannot legally he produced in the US because it can’t meet *any regulations*) The process for Tencel uses slightly less toxic chemicals, but more importantly is circular, meaning 99% of the materials used are recovered and reused, and it’s fully biodegradable making it one of the more sustainable types of fabric,even though it is a man made fiber.

I used kind of cheap buttons, and together with thread and interfacing that’s probably another 10 dollars.

So 70 in materials.

A living wage in the Twin Cites is about 23 an hour. That’s what it takes just to make rent and buy food and get by.

At 23 an hour the labor cost is $253.00.

But I have years of experience, I used some advanced techniques, and a living wage should be a base salary, so let’s call a fair, mid career wage for producing a product everyone needs, clothes, 36 an hour.

Labor cost now $396.00

Plus 70 in materials: $466.00

A little wear and tear on machinery and tools and incidentals like needles and chalk, maybe add 2 more dollars.

This one-off bespoke skirt costs $468.00 dollars. Theoretically.

Mara Hoffman sells a very similar skirt, with a Tencel/Linen blend and a catch stitch hem for $405.

Darling has a Linen/Rayon Blend without fine finishing for $135

Amazon has a polyester version for $30

Temu has a polyester one for $12

The point here is not “Only buy 500 dollar skirts” but all clothes are hand made and that labor has value.

All labor has value. We all should buy fewer clothes, but we should all be able to afford decent clothes.

A 12 dollar skirt is *nonsense* but so is only being able to afford clothes that won’t last more than a couple washes.

So probably unneeded advice but to like anyone reading this who is wanting to build up any sort of alternative fashion wardrobe or probably even just generally change your wardrobe up

I have a fairly decent sized goth wardrobe at this point but it's the result of like a couple of years work and there's also the time required to basically work out what look I wanted and learning how to construct outfits and I def did do some things a bit backwards and probably did go a bit spend crazy at points and there's some stuff I probably would've done a bit different if I had to start over again but here's some tips

Look at what you wear already chances are that will give you some idea about what you actually wear and then you can find alternative versions of those items

Take it slow if you're say not used to wearing skirts it can be a bit jarring to suddenly put one on or doing any sort of like really full on Outfit (TM) if you tend to largely wear a hoodie and jeans all the time

Accessories are your friends, it's very easy to say 'goth up' a fairly basic outfit with a cool belt and some jewellery

'Normal' stores/brands will likely have plenty of stuff you can work with, I've for example found a few really nice velvet dresses I found on sale at H and M (post the christmas/new year 'party season' is a great time to look for velvet dresses btw)

If buying from places like Killstar just... wait for their sales they do fairly big sales fairly often

Please do not buy your stuff from Shein and Temu etc just don't not worth it (Also if you shop second hand there's a glut of that stuff on the market anyway)

If using platforms like Depop and Vinted you'll likely have more luck searching for items if you say go: Velvet Dress Black then typing in 'goth'

Thrifting is great, however thrifting is not always easy and not always that accessible and if it's not an option for you that's fine

(Also personally I prefer Vinted to Depop, Vinted tends to be cheaper and also as a plus sized person I tend to find plus sized clothes on Vinted a lot more than I do on Depop)

Don't fall into the statement pieces trap, they're fun but shouldn't make up most of your wardrobe as chances are you don't live a lifestyle where you can wear stuff like that all the time , more basic items you can play with are more useful especially early on

Don't just look at alternative fashion for inspiration, I've found some outfits I really like that are essentially more 'mainstream' trends but 'make it goth'

DIY is fun but it does take time to learn, also it's not always necessarily as cheap as people make it seem but it's worth doing also be prepared for things to go wrong early on, do trial runs on things

I was surprised to see visceral backlash about the Morning Musume concert costumes (the ones where it's a mishmash of casual outfits). It turns out the outfits are from SHEIN but the cheapest designs on the site. It's getting backlash from Japanese fans because Japan recently had extensive news coverage on a Korean study that found high amount of carcinogens in SHEIN and TEMU clothes so there's a lot of fear mongering. In Japan SHEIN also has the image of being only used by teenagers because of the prices. So naturally fans are very upset about UFA being so cheap. I didn't think much of the costumes except they were overly flashy but it's bad timing for Upfront to be using SHEIN and makes them look less trustworthy to fans.

Hello everyone. I didn't want to make this post, but I feel like it's finally time i speak out about this horrible person. They go by @shawnthevampire on here. She is very popular within the Jacksepticeye community and she is a horrible person. She is Racist, Ableist, narcissistic and manipulative. This is gonna take a while..

Shawn is manipulative. She lies and gaslights people to get her own way. She once lied about one of my friends to try to convince me that he didn't care about me, saying things like "He's a rich shit" and "Why would a rich shit care about a couple of poor, mentally disabled biological females?" She did this a lot. She manipulates and lies, and then deletes all evidence of it every happening. Not to mention if your trauma is not the exact same as hers, she will invalidate it either to your face or behind your back. Personal experience: I was having a panic attack and she said it was amusing.

She silences anyone who disagrees with her. On Discord, if you say something she doesn't like? Timeout. Try to diffuse an argument? Timeout. I once got timed out for a week because I was defending my brother from her bullying. But she got rid of it a few hours later. You cannot say ANYTHING to her that she doesn't like, or.. doesn't have. If there is something she doesn't/can't have or something she just doesn't like, You can't talk about it. One time me and my friends were talking about "Amanda the Adventurer" and she banned us from talking about it all together because she didn't like it! She abused her power so much, and the changed the rules to her own server so it was convenient for her. For example, She could talk about politics but if you tried to it was against the rules and you weren't allowed.

She's abelist. Shawn will probably deny this as she is autistic, but being autistic does not give you an excuse to being abelist. I had one person tell me how she made fun of them for being hard of hearing. And there is a whole tumblr thread where she got involved in an argument over the Jacksepticeye ego character, Jameson Jackson. She says she hates her brother all because he's more autistic than her so he needs to be taken care of a little more. She went on a whole rant about how much she hates her brother and her parents, who bend over backwards to her will and anything she wants. She treats the people close to her like shit and with disrespect with no regard to the fact that they are human and have feelings too.

She is racist. Oh ho ho ho. Shawn is racist. Because why wouldn't she stop at being abelist? I have a couple of examples. On roblox she said to someone "Bro is black Irl" because they were apparently harassing her. Then she tried to defend it when called out by saying that "History is built up on racism" and that people should be used to racsim by now. The second example is she defends the infamous app "Temu" like she is the creator herself. After me and my friends sent her multiple piece of evidence that Temu still people's data, she just turns a blind eye and has blocked people over it. When defending the app she said, and I quote, "Also, if the USA truly cared about our Internet safety, they'd stop allowing apps from other countries to be approved onto the app store". And that this was all because Temu is a Chinese company, and that all the products are cheap and "suspicious" is because its a Chinese company.

Boundaries aren't a thing to her. If you are uncomfortable by a joke she's making and you tell her, she just thinks it's funny and does it more. These mainly include sexu@l jokes. And uh, here's a personal experience. I had a crush on a friend and I told her about it, she proceeded to give me a deadline to tell them my feelings and then decided to tell them behind my back anyway.

This is just on Discord and a couple things on Tumblr. She also caused things on Wattpad but I don't have the patience or energy to get into that.

The mirror is not a mirror. Its a jewellery holder. I bought this mirror for £5 at a car boot sale when I was about 15 years old. It's served me well for the last 27 years. I've always used it more for jewellery, the curly bits lend themselves to that, and it means when they're not being worn they're still decorative to the room.

There's far too much here for me to go through it all, though the vast majority is thrifted or I've had for decades and I forget where its from. However, shoutout to my friend for the rosary style necklace (here's a post I did about them in more detail which includes a link to her etsy shop). She also made the green lady and the heart with the eye in it at the top and the dragon eye. I think they were all done with air drying clay.

I also assembled a few myself (can't really say I properly "made" them), the ones you see on velvet ribbons, and I have a full post about how I did that here.

Many of these were found or thrifted. The two sets at the top left are my Good Omens earrings that I put together with charms and beads, the onyx teardrops were my wedding earrings, the flies are by Katie Whittle, the Krampus ones were bought at a comic con but unfortunately I've forgotten the details of the seller (a shame because she had lots of other cool stuff).

The ravens I got from Etsy, but they're originally Ali Express. Be careful with etsy, there are a lot of sellers who claim their stock is handmade but are really re-selling items from Ali Express, Wish or Temu. Initially I found these for £19 ("on sale", regular price supposedly £30). All the seller had done was put an earring hook on them, which I really don't think qualifies them as handmade or warrants such a price hike. I did a search for "crow charm" and found them being sold elsewhere on etsy for £5. Then I did a reverse image search and found the original Ali Express listing where they can be bought for £2.37.

I did buy the £5 etsy ones for the convenience of having them shipped from the UK, but I would always advise checking more than one shop, or using Google lens/reverse image searching if you suspect an etsy item might not be legit.

You may notice, none of my earrings have hooks or posts on them. This is because my ears are stretched (the right has been 16mm for many years, and I'm currently stretching up the left to match, at present it's 5mm), so I can't wear conventional earrings.

You can get special plugs or tunnels that you can hang a hook earring from, but they usually make it very front-heavy which I don't like. I prefer the weight evenly distributed across my whole ear.

So, I simply remove the hook or post from any earrings I buy using jewellery pliers, and when I want to wear a set I hang them from a hinged segment ring (bottom left on my pin board, very cheap online), and put the ring through my tunnel. You just have to make sure there is a loop of some kind left at the top of the earring that you can put the segment ring through.

I haven't been painting my nails while pregnant just on the off chance that the chemicals would do harm to baby, also I had an existential crisis after learning about drop-shippers like TEMU where I got most of my "cheap" supplies and needed to re-evaluate the ethics of my hobby, also I'm just too fucking tired to care about it.

We're in the grueling process of rearranging the entire house to build a grandpa apartment downstairs and compressing the two upstairs bedrooms into combined spaces for master bedroom/partner office and baby room/my office.

Point is, my nail polish has all been stored in a giant industrial metal desk that came out of an insurance agency, and that desk is WAYYYY too big to share space with baby furniture, so it's got to go. I've been looking at the best storage options for my nail crap, because it's always been a bit of a mess and I very much want to be able to access it all later for self-care days.

So. I thought I had a lot of nail stuff. Like, oh no, I might need to buy a whole 30" tall rolling IKEA cabinet for it. One furniture-worth seems like an excessive amount to me. I mean, I have enough nail stuff that I started a YouTube channel about it (sort of)

Turns out... after looking up "best ways to store nail polish" I uhhhh have a very entry-level amount, apparently????
