The only shitty thing about being a self-shipper in some fandoms is when you want to connect with people who are in that same fandom as you and share your love of the characters you ship with, whether with fanfics you wrote or art you drew/commissioned, but having this gut feeling that you just KNOW that people are going to laugh at your or call you gross or whatever, and it sucks. You basically have to tread so lightly and tiptoe around glass with how you talk positively about certain characters because otherwise people will bully you for it in any way they can and almost force you to isolate yourself from the majority of the fandom, if not completely ruin your love for that source- and that shouldn't happen, but it does.

Whether just for fun or actually serious about it, LET PEOPLE SELF-SHIP. So long as they're not hurting or offending anyone, the character and person shipping themselves with them are both adults, and are happy with how they live and express themselves, it shouldn't be an issue. Who fucking cares if people call it "cringe" or "stupid" or whatever words they come up with? It's something we love, and characters we love, and us self-shippers deserve to be able to feel safe and accepted in the sources we love without worrying about being insulted by it. Let us love what we love- we're not stopping you from enjoying your fandoms, so don't do it to us.

One thing I love and miss about SA2 Shadow that we’re likely never getting back is how smart, sneaky, and mischievous he was. How he was the kind of guy who could play the long game and trick a person into being their own worst enemy.

‘Cause here’s the thing. After Heroes, Shadow became a “I take orders from NO ONE!” kind of guy, and him boasting that constantly makes it impossible for him to ever play the long game again. Because in SA2, he still didn’t take orders, but he pretended he did. His first words to Eggman are him sucking up to the guy about how grateful he is to be released and how he will grant his master one wish.

He took one look at Eggman, thought “Oh, this guy definitely seems like the type who wants to be worshipped and has a weakness for flattery. I can use that.” And then he pretended to be a loyal and obedient servant so he could gain Eggman’s trust and stab him in the back later.

Modern Shadow would never do that. He wouldn’t have the patience to pretend. He would never refer to someone as his master even as a trick because now he values his pride more than he values efficiency. And while he isn’t unintelligent, he sometimes feels like more brawn than brain, whereas in SA2, he had both.

Tricking Eggman in SA2 is a pretty big deal considering how smart and effective he is in that game. Sonic and Tails try to trick him via the fake emerald and it doesn’t work. He doesn’t fall for it. But he does fall for Shadow’s trick. Because Shadow is cunning and clever in how he goes about it, and most importantly, he’s patient.

I wish we could see that again instead of it always being a contest of who can throw the hardest punch. Because the former is much more interesting.

‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.

‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.

even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.

I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.

fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.

idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.
