Mood. We've had to stop playing games like this because we'd get unhealthily addicted to "number go up"

Like we'd get a withdrawal like effect, we'd get anxious about missing out on potential number going up if we didn't have whatever idle game we were obsessing over running in the background of our computer 24/7. Doing schoolwork? Keep it in the background and tab in like every 5 minutes to check in on it and buy upgrades. Planning D&D? Same thing.

Other games that use the "number go up" formula often got greedy with their players and kept trying to exploit their addiction to make them spend money, they made it more and more grindy until it was impossible for free-to-play people like us to keep up. (We didn't have a job, so no consistent money, so that's a reason why we were FTP. I dunno if we would've fallen into the trap of spending tons of money on games like these if we had a consistent income)

After getting disillusioned with our latest "number go up" simulator, I decided to try cookie clicker because I heard it wasn't pay to win. Yeah, I used an autoclicker too. And CC was pretty neat and all, it wasn't exploitative, which I appreciate- it was a grindy game in its purest state, grinding for the sake of grinding, gaining numbers for the hell of it, instead of trying to make money off of players- but since it wasn't actively trying to exploit us with FOMO it let us stop and think, and we realized we don't even enjoy these kinds of games that have taken up hours and hours of our lives.

So we made a rule for ourselves. No more of these games. From now on, we only play games if we're actually enjoying them, not just playing it out of obligation to make the number go higher. And it was really hard to stop playing since we got that same kind of withdrawal effect, the little itch in the back of the head that "I could be more productive right now, if I just had one of those games open in the background while I write I would be more productive" but we had to just fight that.

Anyway, that's not to say nobody should play these games. I'm not writing this to shame anyone for playing them, I'm not trying to sound preachy and hope that it doesn't come off that way- this comic just reminded me of our experience with these types of games and I felt like talking about it since we were addicted to these kinds of games for a good while. Some people will definitely be able to handle the addicting nature of these games better than we can. Some people genuinely enjoy the grind because it lets them just turn off their brain for a little while or not have to focus too much on something. Just be mindful to not let it become an addiction, is all.

#video game addiction #game addiction #emyr post #we used to play idle champions of the forgotten realms an unhealthy amount since we really like D&D #to be fair that game taught us about a lot of important D&D figures we otherwise wouldn't recognize so we're grateful for that #Like Jarlaxle. we wouldn't have known who the hell he was while prepping our out of the abyss campaign without that game having him #and that game gave us an idea for his personality which will be really useful for playing him as an npc #and it also made him grow on us #idk how accurate the game's personality was of him but still we started out indifferent and ended up liking him #as much as we'd like to our adhd prevents us from reading the books with the big famous characters like him and drizzt and bruenor #so we would've had very little exposure to characters like these otherwise #maybe we should listen to audiobooks more. but i digress #they ended up introducing a battle pass thingy and we dipped #because the entire point of season pass battle pass whatever they're called is to exploit FOMO to get you to pay money and we have no money #So we got disillusioned and moved onto the next game #We also played creatures of sonaria on roblox for a very long time #it's not really an idle game in the traditional sense it's supposed to be a creature survival game #honestly the creature designs are awesome and the flight mechanics in that game really feels satisfying to use #like there's flapping and gliding and soaring and wind currents and you have to manage your stamina and aiming downwards makes you faster #really pleasing for me since i'm otherkin #most games just make flight like creative mode minecraft and it's boring #unfortunately it has a gacha system for getting new creatures and the only reliable way to get currency is to afk and check in now and then #so you don't get kicked for afk or die of hunger or thirst #the intention is that you get currency for playing the game more but there's nothing to do as long as you keep your creature fed and watere #the missions system helped this problem a little bit but not a huge amount in our experience #so that's why it becomes afk hell unless you want to hunt other players for sport but killing for fun is generally frowned on by many #since most players are just trying to afk for money since there's nothing else to do #so if you kill them it's really inconvenient for their grind but it's also the only form of entertainment unless a seasonal event is on #and if the seasonal event is on then you feel rushed to grind for event currency to get the cool new creatures #oh today i learned there's a maximum tag cap oops

I simply think this fandom doesn't give Wei Wuxian enough credit for the various ways in which he saved Lan Wangji

Lan Wangji has always certainly been trying to protect Wei Wuxian #it took him a long time to figure how to successfully do that though #rereading the books rn and noticing theres a lot of instances that could be read as lwj being frustrated over his inability to protect wwx #like he seemed ready to cry when wwx went missing for a while and then came back with the cursed leg #lwj has always been great at protecting wwx from physical threats (ex: waterborn abyss) but had no idea how to protect him from himself #meanwhile wwx has always been instictually good at saving lwj from both #like I'm 100% lwj would've become like Jiang Cheng if wwx hadn't snapped him out of the blindly following authority thing #and also like... 15 y/o lwj wasnt happy with his life. he was lonely and stressed and literally signing up to be flogged whenever he goofed #wwx is who allowed lwj to grow up by showing him what it was like to actually be a kid (shown in story whenever lwj gets drunk)#he led lwj to having a more flexible mindset. and it both let lwj relax and set lwj up to be a better parent #looking into lwj's dynamic with the juniors- he lets them break a fuck ton of the petty rules and encourages them to question authority #he also teaches them to not be married to any one meathod of problem solving #wwx is also able to save lwj from his own stubbornness #ex: carrying lwj when he broke his leg. getting lwj to cough up bad blood. getting lwj to keep the rabbits #wwx also tends to give lwj the words he has trouble saying himself. helps him communicate #wwx also protects lwj in fights a lot but thats narratively less important #except the various times wwx puts himself in danger to help lwj. those times are what made it so lwj could never move on from wwx #like with the cave incident #or when wwx helped surpress the arm instead of using the chaos to escape cloud recesses #tldr i guess: i think this fandom tends to treat lwj being the best like its natural to him when really wwx accidentaly rewired his brain #I'm looking directly at fanfic writers who act like the Lans would've treated wwx better than the Jiangs #lwj had to do so much work and self reflection post meeting wwx to be the way he is. he is not the sole product of the Lan teachings

RETURN TO MONKE (PUBERTY EDITION)

MK’s monkey form doesn’t feel right to me so i wanted to break up his transformation into stages. Maybe as he learns to accept that side of himself it becomes part of him, instead of changing between human and monkey randomly (which is probably painful). Love yourself, NOW!!!

THAT BOY NEEDS A NOSE #i like the idea of MK constantly flashing between his monkey and human forms as some sort of internal conflict or identity crisis #and he can’t hold his monkey form for very long soo. I’m going to put way too much thought into it and say its some sort of repression #also I made the hair on the sides of his face more attached or growing on the cheeks so it kind of frames it #maybe it’s because his design is so top heavy on his head and that’s why the sideburns feel wrong to me #like it’s fine with Swk and macaque because their hair is more like a tuft. but MKs hair is longer it just feels less balanced shape wise #I also don’t see his tail being very strong right off the bat because it’s. a new limb so the muscle has to be underdeveloped imo #I’m still a firm believer in the face mark XP system though. that is his Minecraft experience bar fight me #ALSO ALSO going back to him flashing between human and monkey. Okay so maybe the wrinkly split head devil isn't the Aging devil itself, since it being called aging definitelly feels like a mistranslation and and public safety wanting to erase old age by sacrificing the younger generation fits the point the chapter is trying to get across much nicer than if the devil was aging itself (+ if you think about it for 2 seconds erasing aging as a whole is a terrible fucking idea since no one will be able to grow anything anymore and people will be stuck as babies and kids forever whereas erasing old age should just make people not age past adulthood and probably cause people who are already elderly to just dissapear on the spot)

But that doesn't mean i'm keeping Cherryboy the exact same because if old age specifically is enough to achieve primal fear level then aging as a whole has gotta be one too. So hooray! someone's getting a slight revamp in the future :)

#i'm not changing his storyline in part one nor his design but his overall backstory will change slightly #but in his main design he is now the Aging fiend instead of straight up devil. i'll definitelly cook up a full devil design for him later #and you know him being a primal fear is fun because i had this idea that even after dying Cherry retains a sliver of his memories #from past iterations. if he is that strong of a devil then he can probably do that #and i can use this as an excuse to why i never made designs for him in hell :) i've got some fun ideas brewing #basic idea so far is that Cherry has a fascination with watching life (basically aging and its effects on living beings) even tho he has #hardly any attachment to life itself. dying is just a part of it same as growing old and such he doesn't feel anything when it happens #to other people and also himself #but being an enormously powerful devil in hell he can only watch this dance of life and death from afar as an outside observer #so after god knows how long he grows tired of sitting there in hell and kills himself to be reborn on earth #and immediatelly goes out of his way to become a fiend. severely weakening his strenght but bringing him closer to the lesser beings #by doing so. and now he can observe life from upclose and interact with the other creatures roaming around. which is something he finds #immense enjoyment in #think like a god that roleplays as a human every once in a while just because they're bored. and when they die they go back to godhood #so thats why all of Cherry's versions on earth are these dudes w animal skulls. little fiends #he can be strong and all-powerful when this life is over. and in hell he will look back at it quite fondly #csm #csm oc #chainsaw man #csm spoilers #csm part 2 #Cherry #hyena ramblings
