A requested Dae-ho x reader Fic
a/n: Aazix!! is here! This is my first decently written fic. I hope the anon who requested got everything they asked for in the fic. Since the anon didn’t make it clear on what gender they wanted, the reader, I decided to make the reader, gender neutral, with very little implications to gender.
additionally the title is a reference to a song, take a guess and see!

You woke up to the blinding lights and blaring music. 
“Yo, [____]” Your boyfriend called out for you from under your bed. You called back in a sleepy mumble.
“I’m here.” 
He hopped out from the bed and gestured for you to do the same. Climbing down and standing next to him. You attempted to grab his hand but being the fucking prick he is, he yanks his hand away.
“Listen here, we are here to make money. Not to drain me of my mental, when you’re scared shitless for no reason.” His usual venom was present in his voice. 
“I-I’m sorry…it’s just there are so many strangers her-“ He cuts you off.
“Shut the fuck up. All you ever do is ruin my fucking life and bitch away at everything.” You look down and take notice of his number, 445.
You looked at yours. 389.
That’s when the guards come in. 
They explained that you’ll be playing games in exchange for a whopping 45.6 billion won in six days. 
“See? Whining my ear off for no reason.” Your boyfriend can’t help but belittle you.
After signing the consent form, you were taken to a set of photo booths. You try to again reach for his hand but you gripe at the air. You whipped around and saw him barking like a dog at another woman. 
It saddened you. He forced you into these games and he’s acting like it’s your fault for him being here. 
When you first met him, he had a debt of 45 million won. He promised you the world and you fell for his cheap romantics. Soon, the abuse started happening. First, he would come home drunk and yell at you. Then, he would slap you across your face for any little reason and lastly, he would beat you for absolutely no reason at all. 
And supposedly his growing gambling debt is your fault too. 
As time passes you reach a field where a giant doll stands in front of a tree. The doll looked like the schoolgirl doll you had as a child. It was kind of cute. 
“You will be playing red light, green light. Players must go when the doll says ‘green light’ and stop when the doll says ‘red light’. If players are caught moving, you will be eliminated.”
A player runs forward and shouts about how there are guns in the walls and how elimination means death. Something about his mannerism told you, he was telling the truth. 
But of course, most thought he was crazy. 
‘Drunk’, ‘Absolute lunatic’, and ‘Paranoid asshole’ you heard some of the many things the crowd called him. 
456 is his number.
The announcer started the game. 
“Green light.” the doll called.
Everyone played along for a while. Until a girl screamed about a bee on her when it was red light. Then…
A gunshot then a thud.
A woman screamed, and then the piercing sound of screams, running, and gunshots rang out. You were frozen with fear. 
“Get behind someone taller than you! And form lines!”
“Green light.”
You were grabbed and covered by a taller player. You saw the number on his back.
388.
“You okay?” He asked, holding your hand tightly. His hands were warm and strong. It made you want to cry. It had been so, so long since a man treated you this nicely. 
“Y-yeah…” you answered back.
“Just stay behind me. I’ll protect you.” His words carried a strong sense of conviction. You immediately believed him. 
He made you want to stand up and be proud of yourself, but the condescending comments your boyfriend made prevented that. You remain shaking through this game of stop and go.
To calm you down, he asked you questions and answered when you asked them back. 
“What’s your name?”
“It’s [____]. Yours?”
“Dae-ho. Kang Dae-ho.”

Your boyfriend was by your side when the pink guards organized a vote. Player 456 went in the vote. He voted to leave. 
Your boyfriend subtly gripped your neck. “Vote to stay, baby.” That pet name made you want to vomit and jump off a 500-story building. 
The voting continued until it reached your boyfriend’s turn. He walked and voted to stay. The girl he was flirting with voted to stay after him.
You felt a hand entwined with yours. You remember that warmth. That sweet, comforting warmth. 
“Vote on your own accord.” You stayed silent as Dae-ho advised you to make your own choices. 
Then, it was your turn. You, very reluctantly, let go of Dae-ho’s hand and go to make your vote.
You close your eyes and think quietly. You have about 20 million in debt because you funding your boyfriend’s gambling addiction. So, since the current prize money is at 24 million, you can get yourself out of debt and still have 4 million to keep you going and start the company of your dreams. But, your boyfriend will stomp on plans the first chance he gets. 
‘Vote on your own accord.’
You made your decision and voted.
You voted to leave.
You accepted the X patch and walked over to the X side of the room. You looked over and you saw the absolute rage on your boyfriend’s face. 
You were fucked.

You were roughly shoved into the wall, the scene shielded by the beds. 
“You fucking bitch. You think you could make a difference by voting to leave.” The bastard of a boyfriend pushes you again into the wall.
“I-i want to leave. Your debt isn’t my debt. I got into debt because of yo-“
He delivered a harsh slap to your face.
“Listen here, you rotten whore.” he wrapped a hand around your neck and pressed against it.
“You’re mine, so don’t get all brave just because you think you’re sneaky about holding hands with another man. He’s only acting nice because he wants you for your worthless body.”
He caught you holding Dae-ho’s hand. 
“From now on, you listen to me. You got that?”
You wanted to shake your head no, you didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of total control over you. 
He delivered another swift slap to your face. This time, with more force. 
“Do you got that?”
Before you could respond, The announcements signaled lights out in five minutes.
You settled into your bed without another word to your boyfriend. 
You soon woke up with the urge to pee. Climbing down slowly and making your way to the door. You knocked softly.
“Excuse me. I need to use the restroom.”
“I’m sorry but no access is permitted at this time.” The pink guard voiced.
“I’m really sorry but it’s just that it’s an emergency.”
That familiar warmth touches your shoulder. 
“Y’know, we can’t control it. Human nature, am I right?” Your warmth speaks in your defense.
Eventually, the guards let both you and Dae-ho in the hallways to head up to the bathrooms. You use it quickly and try to head back to the dorms, Dae-ho grabs your wrist.
“I wanna talk for a second.” He gently cradles your wrist. 
“If you need to get away from your-uh friend, you can join my team anytime you want.” He offered with a warm smile.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” You look away from him. With the way he is looking at you right now, you’re ready to drop everything for him.
“Who’s thinking for you right now? You or that piece of shit boyfriend of yours?” Dae-ho’s tone was sharper than intended.
“I saw what he did to you. I watched him stare at you like he wanted to tear you apart.” His grip on your hand tightens.
“I could-“ He’s interrupted by the guard.
“That’s enough. Time to get back to the dorms.”
You and Dae-ho walk back to the dorms in an uncomfortable silence. You wished you could run away to Dae-ho’s arms, but being in this place with your boyfriend lingering around…
It would end well in your favor. 
Dae-ho whispered in your ear. “Just think about it, okay?”
He didn’t wait for a response after reaching the dorms. You watched as he approached player 456 and sat down to stand guard while 456 went to rest. You make your way back to your bunk and try to sleep with a fast-beating heart that pulses at the very mention of Dae-ho.

“You have 10 minutes to form a group of 5 players.”
You and your boyfriend search for a team, he scoffed as he saw most people have formed a team.
He spots a team of three and approaches them. “Yo, need two for a team?” He asked.
“Nah, just one. One of our guys went looking for a guy but looks like we have our fifth man right here.” Your boyfriend smiles and turns to you. 
“Sorry, babe. Looks like you need to get lost.”
“Huh? You’re leaving me? W-why?” You grew angry. This fucker has the audacity to drag you to the middle of nowhere and then leave you like you’re the burden.
You don’t even want to hear his reasoning. Your boyfriend, no, your EX boyfriend means nothing to you anymore.
You walk from group to group, asking if they need one more person. Their responses were ‘Sorry, we already have five.’ or ‘You’re not capable enough.’
You’re running out of time. You’ll get eliminated if you don’t find a team. 
Every rejection causes tears in your eyes. You accidentally bump into someone, looking up and your eyes lock with Dae-ho’s. 
“Dae-ho…” You nearly broke down in tears.
“Hey, hey now. It’s okay. Relax.” He hugs you tightly. He gives the warmth and comfort that you thought you would never have again. 
“Is that offer still up?” You bury your face into his warm, strong chest.
“Of course, it still is.” He rubbed the top of your head, consoling you. 
Dae-ho takes you back to his group and introduces you to the others.
456, 001, and 390. All men that are quite older than you are. Dae-ho had to be your age or older. You felt safe. Dae-ho’s hand at the small of your back is a constant reminder of his vow to protect you.
He vowed to protect you since the moment he saw your ex put his hands on you after the vote. Dae-ho swore to treat you better, better than he can.

Who do you think is the guy who "seemed like he would've bullied you in school" in COSOSOM? I've always thought it referred to Calvin as she talks about 'the decade' in the previous line meaning that this guy went out with her during the course of the previous decade...
But some people on Twitter seem to vehemently believe that it's about Travis. Tbf Travis does fit the description quite well and people were also making jokes about him taking on her other exes in a fight way before TTPD came out. So what's your opinion on it?
i think cososom is about matty on the surface, so imo it's calvin. i think people making jokes about travis beating matty's ass cannot be taken as proof of what taylor meant about a song she wrote before those jokes were even made?
anyway, using this ask as a jump off point to a more in-depth discussion:
but she's also addressing and playing with the feelings she's had many times before. she's been marooned before, she's been haunted by what ifs her whole life, she's reflecting not just on matty but the whole concept of what ifs. similar to the 1, where she straight up says that she has this habit of digging up graves, wondering what could've been. in the 1, she's saying, the greatest films of all time are never made because they don't exist, just like she and that person never had a chance. but here she is, creating folklore in her mind, saying they could've been. it's one of the themes of folkore as an album.
in cososom, she's saying a similar thing: could i live my life, and watch you live your life, and be okay with it? because we can't force it, because the greatest films of all time are never made, will i always wonder?
we already know from the rest of the album that's not true: cososom and fortnight tell the same story, of not being able to let go - and we know she pursued things with matty because she HAD to stop wondering and just do it. but we also know in her discography that she's haunted by certain relationships, it's a huge theme in her work preceding ttpd. and not just about matty, but about jake, john, and others.

i was thinking about mizuki's gender being listed as unknown again and how everyone else has an explicit mention. people tried to point at that to say she's either not trans OR that she isn't a tgirl (instead a different kind of trans) at some point, but i think that… actively misunderstands the internal intent of the game. like this was done so people wouldn't assume she's a cis girl and i also think there's an active intent in noting that, but not wanting to say "gender = male" bc this would be misgendering (duh) and for a character who's burying so much of her gender struggles bc of how others deny it, i think it makes sense. there's a struggle, i think, in writing and exploring trans narratives that engage with that… question? idk. maybe it would be better if she was just noted as female from the start and i think she's overdue for that especially after ena5, but i also think there's so much nuance in how she's portrayed that i see saying her gender is "?" isn't meant to actually be a declaration of her gender or meant for the reader to question what her gender is.

in many cases, trans girls are already automatically shunted into that expectation of either a fetish or wish fulfillment (which in many ways are the same thing at a certain point) and that's the conceit of her introduction in the main story in terms of how everyone treats her as an exhibition at school - she's fetishistically mythologized and vilified as an Other type of girl, which is something she tries to reclaim by hiding behind the facade of the Mysterious Manic Pixie Dream (Cis) Girl when she's around niigo bc it's the only way she feels like she can be with them without imposing on them or getting close enough to them to the point of having to reveal her secret due to her desire to avoid being hurt. it's wild to me that the consensus in the past about her was that she's anything but a trans girl when the treatment she's subjected to at the school is textbook transmisogyny and this is something we see immediately in the main story.

people are constantly fetishizing her and treating her like an object to be ogled at. she's constantly under the threat of violence. even when she puts so much work into pushing back just through being full of energy and looking "past" it all, they never stop. there's nothing she can do about a society that refuses to recognize her as a person, much like mafuyu can't do anything to change her own mother.

at most she gets told by others that this person is "just not used to her yet". terrible implications all around bc she's made to feel as though people are just putting up with her existence instead of making the effort to understand something that should be simple about who she is, which makes her feel terrible after she's put so much effort into both explaining herself and making herself as palatable as possible?
i think there are some valid criticism to be raised about how marking mizuki as "unknown" and how it might've contributed to people writing her off as "neither a girl nor boy" and the unfortunate parallels with degendering/third sexing therein. if i were to engage in good faith, i'd say the intent is draw attention to mizuki's gender struggles and make the reader interrogate that (and then ideally arriving at the answer being that she's a trans girl), but i still stand by my take that ena5 should've had her refer to herself as a girl explicitly to reclaim the way she was outed previously. it also always felt like the equivalent of mafumom being 'hidden' due to mafuyu's perception of her as a figure of authority rather than a person until kanade saw her for the awful person she is. in this case mizuki's "unknown" is also meant to tie into her own internalized transmisogyny (e.g. referring to herself as an artificial flower in many songs). mizuki herself plays into the degendering she's been subjected to for her entire life in many ways … we know that in the beginning of high school she actually made effort to explain herself to others and they didn't get it? she presumably said that she's a trans girl but she wasn't taken seriously. now she just finds it exhausting to explain anything and she doesn't want to feel like she constantly has to prove that a trans girl is just a type of girl so she's just like "that's me. i do this bc i wanna be me. this is the person i am, why the hell do you think i would do this, why would i dress this way, why would I put up with people like you if it wasn't obvious." i think there's also a lot we can engage with in terms of the presentation of mizuki which is wholly under her own control vs that which is outside of her control... mizuki finds comfort in niigo and connecting with girls over discord bc she can rewrite her life in such a way to as to obscure her own transness like when she narrates her backstory. the fact that the details of her trauma are so carefully hidden carries a strong intent bc it reads as mizuki's renarrativization due to not wanting to get too much into detail about her own trauma? it feels very meta considering mizuki's genre saviness and the fact that most transfeminine narratives tend to indulge in transmisogynistic violence in really voyeuristic ways... we know mizuki had numerous traumatic coming out moments and i think there's so much to read into the ambiguity around this... she's frankly constantly under the treat of SA as well as a trans girl, but i just appreciate that this is something the writing treats respectfully and affords her so much dignity. to be trans in many contexts is to be expected to give over so much of yourself to people who frequently won't care, won't actually understand how much of yourself you're giving over, and will actively rewrite your narrative to define who you are for you based on their own prejudices… and mizuki communicates that well bc she's allowed to be almost wholly in control of her presentation and her narrative.

Sirius is the person who cries the most at the Potters’ wedding. More than Euphemia, more than Lily’s mum, more than Mary, even more than James.
And yes, it’s because they're perfect for each other, it's because they're so happy they're glowing, it's because there’s a war going on and this is a very much needed reminder that good things exist as well.
Sirius is sobbing because of all of that, but there's also the other reason. The one he can't even fathom saying out loud.
See, the moment his sobs are at their worst is not when his sight is on the happy couple. Sirius sobs the hardest each time his gaze finds Remus.
It's a kind of sorrow that is hard to describe, that one can only understand if they experience it themselves.
It's that excruciating, all consuming longing, of craving the same thing for himself and the person that is currently sniffing at his side, trying his hardest to hold back tears.
It's that harrowing, loud void that had taken place in his chest the moment he had realised (when James had proposed to Lily) that the only reason he had ever thought he hated the mere concept of marriage had been because of what it meant for his family. It's the sudden, startling realisation that he would absolutely love the idea of marriage if it was something he could have with the person currently standing by his side.
“Do not despair, sweetheart. He's just getting married, you're still his platonic soulmate.”
Remus’ joking attempt at soothing him sends him over the edge all over again and more sobs break through.
Great, now all those attending the wedding will know he's not as badass as he wants them to believe. How is he ever going to survive that?
“‘s not that,” he mumbles anyway between sniffs.
He feels Remus’ hand graze softly against his. Sirius grabs it like an anchor. Not caring about who might see, what might they think. He doesn't care. There's so much he isn't allowed. He at least gets to have this.
By the time the first dance comes around, Sirius has recovered just enough. He has fixed his eyeliner and he's determined not to cry anymore.
Then James and Lily step on the dancefloor, they swirl to their favourite song and Sirius is once again ruined.
He can't help the sob that escapes him. The unreasonable grief where there should only be joy for his friends.
His mind goes miles away. He imagines himself slow dancing with Remus, at their own wedding, at their own first dance, surrounded by their friends and families, celebrating their love. And he wants it. He craves it. Oh, he so desperately wants it.
Remus is at his side once again and this time he's the one silently reaching out, subtly embracing him, surely thinking he can pass it off as a friendly embrace.
“Are you alright, love?” he asks in his deep, concerned voice.
Sirius considers lying, but opts for the truth. He shakes his head meekly, another sob shaking him.
“I want this, Remus,” he confesses. “I hadn't fully realised it until today, but I want this. All of this. Marriage, a house, kids. I want the whole deal.”
Remus frowns a bit. “What are you saying…?” And damn, he looks scared now. He thinks Sirius wants to leave him for a traditional marriage.
“No, silly,” he sobs once more, a breathy laugh escaping him at the absurdity, a sad smile on his lips. “I don't mean it like that. I want it with you, but we aren't allowed and it's bloody destroying me.”
“Oh.”
It's almost comical to see all of the emotions that go through Remus' face. It goes from surprise, to adoration, to sadness and everything in between.
“I love you so much, Sirius,” he vows, gaze focused on him, the rest of the world forgotten. “Me too,” is what he says next. “I also want it all. With you.”
And that's the saddest thing, isn't it? They want the same thing for each other and yet they live in a world that won't let them have it. It's a crushing realisation. Discovering something you've known all along, but have never fully realised the whole weight of it, just how much it defines your life, that something someone has arbitrarily decided long ago has the power to determine the whole course of your lives. It's painful, it's unfair, it's soul-sucking, it's enraging, it's rubbish.
For how powerful his magic is, he feels completely powerless in front of the way the rest of the world sees their love. All he can do is hold on to Remus and silently promise himself that he'll do everything in his power to get them what so many couples have the luxury of taking for granted.

Lyric Breakdown in my Last Life (mainly Martyn-centric) song, "Corners of the World"

'Abridged' version here, and longer analysis (ft. a lot of Martyn character analysis... and also the full lyrics I'm actually talking about) under the cut.
"I'll lie, double cross to best them all" is yet again a reference to a line from Martyn's Last Life teaser poem ("Surpass them all/Take friends for foes"), which was from the perspective of the Watchers (and was previously referenced by them in the first song, Middle of Nowhere). Martyn using this phrasing hints that the Watchers already hold some influence over him, hence the outline of the lyrics flashing purple in the video!
"Walls, corners, edges" is taken from Martyn's speech after Ren's beheading (as is the title of this song, for the same reason):
"You took me in when I was a lowly traveler, going across the land, searching the four corners of this world. I learned there was nothing in this world for me – nothing but walls, corners, edges. And you know what, you showed me life. As much as I’ve taken it from you, you gave it back to me in buckets’ fulls."
The point here is that, after the events of 3rd Life, Martyn's reverted back to that previous worldview. That life he was shown clearly meant something to him, but ultimately, its price was far too high. So now, he's deliberately separating himself from a mindset that would allow him to care too much about others and feel that same pain: the world is walls and edges; the people in it are figures to use for his own benefit, not to care about; the world does not hold those buckets' fulls of life. As we see with his reactions to the Southlands' fall, he doesn't really end up being successful in this (and it's a major topic of exploration throughout the musical) – but it doesn't mean he doesn't want or try to be.
Of course, the wordplay this verse ("You'll be cornered in the corners, and on edge in many more/And walls you'll build and walls you'll raise(/raze), and walls will fall in war") is to establish Martyn's strengths in that area. Getting the voice right is an important part of musical characterisation too!
"Keep it a void you're fighting for" is either dramatic irony or foreshadowing depending on how much you know of his lore. Martyn's only referring to not fighting for anyone else's sake here, but between the seasons the players do spend their time falling through the void (while unconscious) – regardless of whether they win or lose. By fighting to win, you are just fighting for that same void... which of course, Martyn doesn't know (because surely winning means something). If he knew nothing changes after you win, the incentive to win would be much weaker, and I'd argue we do see that in c!Martyn post-Limited Life. But despite his cynicism and distrust, he's still naïve to this particular cruelty of the world... :) i mean lore-wise if you win a fragment of your soul does get protected but 1) no bearing on last life and so on this musical whatsoever, and 2) how is c!martyn supposed to know that even after his win
"Careful with the name you pick/Don't want it to get flamed" is (as the editing hopefully makes clear) a pun – 'you don't want your name to be made fun of', and 'your tree fort is flammable'. This is again meant to establish Martyn's quick wit as well as progressing the song/storyline, and as well as showing us him messing with people, which he very much likes to do! (I am also aware Cleo was the one who informed Lizzie, but I had to streamline various things for the sake of the medium – this is both a Martyn character establishment song and an intro to the world and various figures in it, so it's easier if Martyn is the one who introduces that to those figures (and for us to get more information about Martyn based on how he interacts with them). And Lizzie's reaction to that information was something I wanted to keep in)
Of course Skizz and Etho were in the Red Army too, Martyn's just being cheeky/faking indignation here (if there'd been space, I'd have given Skizz a line of protest, but from a musical standpoint I preferred the instant transition into Scar's section). But guys.... BEST/Dogwarts parallels... guys.....
"(...)I'll lead, not play a pawn"/"(...)little pawn" (sung simultaneously, the first by Martyn and the second by the Watchers) is a callback to the first song, Middle of Nowhere, in which there's a section of randomised lives being given out. The first line there is "Four for the traitor, four for the pawn", and this confirms/establishes 'the pawn' as referring to Martyn (referencing what he's treated as by the Watchers). Note that here Martyn's desire 'to lead' refers to being in control of his actions and not deferring to anyone, not specifically to leading an alliance. Of course, Martyn's part is full of dramatic irony on his behalf :)
Those are the 'flashier' lines and word choices I especially wanted to highlight. Now, for the version with way more character analysis!
As mentioned, Corners of the World is Martyn's – our main character's – introductory song. Regardless of whether it counts as an 'I Want' song or not (it's a bit nebulous, because yes, he does express things he wants – to win, to be in contol of his own actions and not at others' whims. But for me, the more important part of the song is what he doesn't want to do, what things he's distancing himself from that he's presumably done before, and the questions and implications that arise from that. And the core of that is explored slightly later on), it's going to be our first impression of him as a character. The traits and worldview established here will be viewed as important, and will form the basis of his arc throughout the musical.
Because of that, the two verses focus on establishing that inital worldview (as well as establishing what he's aiming for):
MARTYN (Verse 1) Right, here I go again — new world, another start. New chance to see who’ll reach the end, and who will fall apart Well, won’t be me – this time I’ll be the very last to fall No care for cost, I’ll lie, double cross to best them all
So we know he wants to survive and win the game (especially after not doing so last time), we know he's willing to play dirty to achieve that and definitely should not be trusted. We know he's under no impression that this is anything other than a death game (or death match, to quote his Limited Life self) – he doesn't hide from the knowledge that people will fall apart, that only one person will be left standing. Importantly, this means he's playing the game exactly as intended, with no intentions of defying it or even deviating slightly* from what the first song has expressed to be the goal (to 'best'/'surpass' everyone else). Even as he expresses the wish to play for himself, he's already committed himself to following others' unseen rules.
Walls, corners, edges, I’ve been this way before. You’ll be cornered in the corners, and on edge in many more; And walls you’ll build and walls you’ll raise(/raze) and walls will fall in war, Kinship destroyed, so keep it a void you’re fighting for.
And here we get an exploration of Martyn's mindset in more detail. I've touched on this already, but a major point of exploration throughout the musical is Martyn's relashionship to emotional attachment – he's coming right off the bat of Ren's death in 3rd Life, which "broke" him and made him play more selfishly since (both statements taken from the LimLife lore stream), and he is someone who tends keep his distance and who'll prioritise himself over allies whenever things get dicey. But the "life" that closeness gave him back in 3rd Life was still clearly important to that version of him, and he does inadvertently (and unwillingly) start chasing that again this season – ending up growing close to the Southlanders (bar Grian) despite his efforts, enough to hallucinate them and be manipulated by the Voice's(/Watchers') false promise to bring them back to life if he follows its commads (in a moment where he expresses resistance to following its commands, and where the Voice is clearly distressing him). LL Episode 8 intro my beloved...
Still, that's to come. At the start of Last Life, he's firmly in a reactionary mindset to the events of 3rd Life, separating himself from that life and that version of him. 3rd Life was a failure on his part (in addition to the emotional damage, but he's trying to separate himself from that side of things and to focus purely on the win), and he's absolutely not wasting this new chance at victory.
So corner to corner, I’ll keep wandering on, Border to border, through woods, through caves, through spawn, Sure, laugh with some, don’t keep it glum, so long as lines are drawn Forego the rest, and don’t invest, just keep on wandering- WATCHERS Wandering, wandering MARTYN -on.
It's Watcher manipulation time, encouraging unhealthy mindsets that help them further their own aims! The more untied he is, the easier he'll be for them to play (less loyalties to others –> the more likely he is to rely on the Voice, and the less resistance there is to doing certain things that might involve those connections). Yes, emotional connections would mean more emotional pain (and so more negative emotions for them to feed on) in the future, but Martyn's very resistant to that idea right now, so it wouldn't do much to push it. They do encourage emotional connections later, though (heavily pushing him towards Ren for example, and note that that's only once it would mean Martyn betraying his own alliance (which would mean more emotional pain for someone, regardless of its impacts on Martyn himself. Or it would've been if that was revealed)).
There's another important part here, though. After all the 'allies won't help you' etc in the first two verses, I wanted to make clear that Martyn's not against being around people, far from it – he's almost constantly around people, just not generally around the same ones for an extended period of time – it's just the emotional investment he's trying to avoid. He is a very social player, he does enjoy joking and/or messing around with others and does it constantly, that's also an important aspect to him (he's a very "you talk a lot but never say anything" type of person**). So "sure, laugh with some, don't keep it glum" is a very important line!
LIZZIE Welcome, oh welcome to my tree fort, yet unnamed. MARTYN Be careful with that name you pick — don’t want it to get… flamed. LIZZIE …Ah. They won’t demean A fellow green? …Your lives? MARTYN That’s mine to know Is that a tower over there? See you, I’ve got to go!
And immediately, here's an example of Martyn actually messing with someone (as a new player, Lizzie is fun to tease)! His "don't want it to get flamed" triples as that, as a wordplay demonstration, and as another recognition that they are living in a world where people will inevitably turn on each other. If something's flammable, it will be burned.
Lizzie's characterisation here is meant to show her as someone who wants to do her best and is establishing herself, but is unsure/nervous about how the game will unfold due to having had no past experience (, the '...your lives?' comment is prompted by the momentary urge to want to know how close Martyn is to turning Red and potentially burning down her tree fort) There is the element of naïvité coming from not having lived through a previous series, too – not thinking about how badly having a flammable base may end, 'they won't demean a fellow green' again here, etc.
Because this verse is a dialogue, I focused a lot more on trying to keep the character's voices true to themselves as well. With Lizzie, the "Welcome, oh [welcome]" is moreso there to suit the 'fairy queen' persona she was going for, but the "tree fort... yet unnamed" would be something she'd say for humour's sake, in her particular style which I cannot for the life of me describe; her 'ah' would be quite deadpan in that way too (again, not sure which words to use to describe it). With Martyn we have the aforementioned wordplay, but also his method of slipping out of situations that go in directions he wants to avoid... which is to pretend to get distracted by something else, promptly change the subject to that thing, and run off (a clear example of this is in Wild Life when Scott is questioning him about his powers, and he conveniently gets 'distracted' by a zombified Skizz dying in the distance instead (~17:30 in his vid). Maybe not the smoothest of getaways... but a habit nonetheless).
TEAM BEST BEST will be the best, and we’ll show em what we got With our matching shields, and our towering snow fort MARTYN Hold on a sec, where’s your respect? BDUBS Respect? MARTYN Yeah, that’s my bit! Same shields? Snow? A world ago? With Ren and- fine, have it
Again, this verse is largely leaning into character voices and interactions. BEST do initally set out to be the heroes of the server (eg by recovering the enchanting table and returning it to the server), and do have some very loud/enthiusiastic figures within their ranks (Bdubs and Skizz), so the tone of their lyrics is meant to reflect this (though the instrumentation, which we'll talk about in a different post, does a lot of this work as well). Of course you also have Etho who's the complete opposite of course (and Tango somewhere in the middle), but it's the louder voices that are going to be heard in the interactions so it's their side of things I'm portraying. And, as mentioned before, we also have Martyn completely going into mock-offense mode.
SCAR/BEST/LIZZIE/MARTYN No matter if you're in your sixes or twos/Let's find some ore to- I'll sell you an offer you/-mine cannot refuse/It'll be the fairy fort! Crystals for fleeing,/I'm fine just to chat Crystals for flame,/Not falling for that! Survival's the ALL Name of the game!
Pretty self-explanatory here, with Martyn not buying into Scar's deals and other alliances going about their lives. BEST heading down to mine is set-up for the next song (aptly named "Down In The Mines"), in which Bdubs reveals he was cursed with the Boogeyman curse while down there, narrating his experiences in the form of a ghost story.
SCAR/BEST/LIZZIE/MARTYN Corner to corner, I'll just keep on wandering, wandering on/Yes, join the fairy fort, I'd love to have you here!/BEST will be the best, with our diamonds and our gold We can build a secret passageway so we'll always be near!/Put us to the test, and you'll see that we won't fold/A crystal or spell, oh, Joel, you'd help me sell?/Through woods, through caves- -But still for my sake I probably should find a team: it would do me some-/We'll aid each other when we need, together we will succeed, oh-/Put us to the test and you'll see that we'll do-/Goody! Magical Mountain we'll be! ALL (including Cleo, BigB and Joel, who are now onstage with their respective alliances) Good – It's this I've understood!*
Here we see the different players' attitudes to playing the game, and what they've "understood" about how to play it, as well as more alliances forming. Nothing much to say about Scar and Martyn here (aside from Martyn expressing the fact that he does want to be part of an alliance for numbers' sake, which we'll build more on in Song 4 (A(ha)lliances) when the Southlands are formed; and also continuing the thread that he sees others as figures he can use to benefit himself. Maybe there were things to say about Martyn here!), but a lot of Team BEST's part is foreshadowing ("put us to the text and you'll see that we won't fold"... they will fold. They will) in addition to contuining the 'server heroes' thread from earlier. Meanwhile, Lizzie's part continues to show her as a player who hasn't experienced the way the server devolves into bloodshed, still having a pretty idealistic view about the co-operation between herself, BigB and Cleo without thinking about the ways they'll inevitably have to turn on each other if they get later in the game.
The part about the tunnel connecting the Fairy Fort to Cleo and BigB's base is taken directly from the first session (originally proposed as an escape tunnel, in the same conversation that Cleo pointed out that the fort was flammable).
UPPER WATCHERS/LOWER WATCHERS Oh, wander, wander on/Wonder, wonder On/When they'll all start to turn tails Wonder, wonder/Wander, wander When trust will yield to betrayals/On
I've mentioned it before, but the Watchers feed on negative emotions, which is why they run the Life series. This is one of the few times we see emotions from them, as they're very excited to see what chaos and carnage this new game they've formed will bring (which I took care to portray in my voice)!
WATCHERS/MARTYN Till the rest are gone.../Right, here I go again – I'll fight with my axe drawn* Oh, wander, little pawn/But, unlike then... I'll lead, not play a pawn.
I've talked about this in the 'abridged' version, so I won't repeat that. The other thing here is the axe being an obligatory Dogwarts reference (or, more accurately, an obligatory rhyme (with 'pawn') which gave way to a Dogwarts reference I took).

sea shanty, a formula
This is my very own post! I did research to compile a guide for this purpose. ✏️
Before we get started, I post content like daily writing prompts, vocabulary word of the day, and fun content like this!
It would make me happy if you’d follow my blog, as I’ll be building a newsletter for writers like you very soon!
Now, as promised, a formula for creating your very own sea shanty 🫶🏻

Step 1:
Decide on a purpose for the shanty.
Is this going to be a working, adventuring, drinking, or mourning song?
Step 2:
Create a syllabic pattern for your verse and your chorus to help you make it have the iconic sound of a sea shanty.
8-6-8-6 is a popular choice for the verse. The numbers here are referring to the number of syllables in one line.
You may also use the same number of syllables or a pattern of your choosing. You could do 8-8-8-8 or even 6-6-8-8 if you like.
Here is one example:
(8) there once was a lady pirate queen
(6) her name Grace O’Malley
To understand more about syllabic writing, I would suggest learning about the Japanese Haiku (an easy place to begin).
Music Notes (Advanced):
You might also decide in this stage if you’re going to use a 4/4 beat or more of a 3/4 (like a waltz).
This would be relevant to the number of beats.
For example: a syllabic pattern of 8 might be more fitting to a 4/4 beat. A syllabic pattern of 6 or 9 to a 3/4.
If you’re using 8 and 6, then a 4/4 beat works well. At the end of the 6 lines you can add stomps or claps to complete the pattern.
Step 3:
We’re going to treat the next step like poetry class. Choose a pattern for your rhyme.
Commonly, you’ll find the pattern ABAB or AABB. You can choose whatever pattern you like. Some of them are more complex like ABCB. It’s your shanty, so write it how you like!
Here’s what that looks like:
(A) (8) there once was a lady pirate queen
(A) (6) her name Grace O’Malley
(B) (8) her heritage was Ireland
(B) (6) and she was a wild’n
Your pattern will depend on what feels right as you’re writing your verse.
Step 4:
Create a chorus that’s easy to remember, relevant to the story, and focuses on repetition.
“Lady of the sea
Lady pirate queen
Oh how I fancy me
A lady of the sea”
Step 5:
Put it together to tell a story! Here’s an example I wrote just for funsies:
(Grace O’Malley is a real historic figure who became a pirate and fought for Ireland!)

On that same note, you know what I also love about Epic???? The late-motivs, they're are the most perfect thing ever
So, this is a list (in no particular order) of the late-motivs throughout the musical:
(Disclaimer: I'm not adding things like Telemachus' sword making the rhythm to the chorus of Little Wolf in the song Odysseus because that's just insane omfg)

Honestly, one of my favorite parts about Epic it's when someone replies "what" to whatever Odysseus or anyone else is saying. So, I'm making a list of the songs where this happens:
Polyphemus (Ody being surprised that the Cyclop still wants to kill them after he just straight-up lied to Polyphemus because he didn't trust him will never cease to amuse me)

#it's so weeeeeeeird to get my parents' feedback on my songs#they're both very artistic types and i always enjoy sharing my music with them#and they tend to give extensive and always-positive feedback. which is. great?#but also they both have this weird habit of assuming that every narrator of every song is always 'in the right'#and should be respected and agreed with and supported#which... kind of makes me feel like they're assuming every narrator is me?#and that's very unsettling bc most of my fictional narrators are uh. lol. Not Great People#ranging from just kind of weak and craven and avoidant (see: the narrator of a certain recent song)#to full-on violent and cruel and fucked-up in the head#ffs i wrote a song recently from the POV of a creep who fixates on a woman he's never met#and eventually murders her (before which he may or may not have raped her. the lyric is intentionally ambiguous)#like... most of the time i thought it was pretty obvious that i'm telling a story with my songs#but either i'm really failing at accurately portraying all these flawed characters#or else my parents have some other reason for constantly reacting to every song narrator#as if said narrator were Not To Be Criticized#my mum described the narrator of this certain song as 'fearless and self-confident and in control'#and i was like... are we referring to the same song?#the one where the narrator is in a super toxic relationship but just pathetically runs away from their reality#instead of ending the relationship and getting their freedom?#the one where - despite feeling trapped by the other person's love#the narrator is also kind of shamefully addicted to being the worshipped idol on a pedestal?#none of that sounds like those positive-coded words you used#but maybe she assumed the narrator was me and therefore didn't want to say anything negative?#(in which case AARRRRGHHHH how do i make people realize that songwriting is ART NOT AUTOBIOGRAPHY???)#or maybe she visualized herself in the place of the narrator?#(in which case: oof. oh dear. but i suppose that's none of my business. i'm not a therapist)#i just get very tired of my parents' inability to accept the existence of bad things in the world sometimes#but i know it's my own problem: i can't assume people will always 'get' what my lyrics are about#once you put your art out in the world you have to accept that is not entirely yours anymore#people will take it and make it their own until you don't even recognize it anymore

i've been going into the liam tag from time to time the last year where both his fans and people who hated him were Weird about him well before there were any allegations so i would get curious, i don't even remember what started it (maybe it was merely looking for photos that update accounts wouldn't post), but i normally try to avoid going into anything but edit tags for people i enjoy bc there are so many nonsense takes
and of course happening to go through today before the news broke bc i wanted to see what was being said about the abuse as i've only gotten bits on twitter and of course there were many posts rightfully calling it out and all but there's that weird mentality which i was getting a lot more of from twitter but some on here where they're like??? celebrating it and girlboss-ing and i'm just like. okay it's great that you're believing a victim but you're making light of it by talking about it like it's just another stan thing, i have seen that time and time again when this kind of stuff comes out and if people already thought that person was annoying or whatever they're just like "oh yes! i knew it! their career is ruined haha!" and it's like. you clearly don't actually care about the horrible things this person has done and just want to brag that you somehow ~knew~ a stranger's vibes were off and it's so beyond gross like you could use that energy to support a person's victims and instead you'll just try to prove you stan the right people and never the wrong ones or whatever
