Giggles

“I’m in love with a complete idiot.” Yosano announced, trying her hardest to keep a straight face.

“As if you didn’t find that one funny, c’mon.” She did, and both Ranpo and her knew, but still. She wanted to resist, at least just a bit.

Needless to say, it was just a matter of time, and barely a couple of minutes later all her attempts ended up being futile; first there came a giggle, then a few more, and soon enough Akiko was letting out a roaring laughter with tears threatening to come down her face. And her laughter seemed to be contagious, because even when he had been the one telling the joke, it didn’t take much time for Ranpo to join her as well.

They laughed like carefree children who had just gotten away with the best prank ever, and kept laughing for a while, sitting real close to each other and with their hands entwined. They laughed until the sudden movement of the door opening surprised them enough to look.

“Is everything alright?” The president asked, and Yosano couldn’t answer with anything more than a brief nod in his direction.

She had managed to make eye contact with Fukuzawa while keeping a calm demeanor, but once her glance met Ranpo again and they shared a look, giggles started coming again with no way to keep them at bay.

“Alright, I’ll leave you to it.” Instead of appearing bothered, or even impressed, Fukuzawa shrugged with the expression of someone who had gone through that exact same scenario a ton of times and wouldn’t mind another ton more. And as he said, he went about his day after saying goodbye with a nod and closing the door on his way out.

Their giggles, of course, increased again once alone.

" carry on cowboy, " she drawled listlessly, barely glancing over her shoulder as she reached the fence, hoisting the skirt of her dress up slightly so she could move to climb over it, sitting on the ledge with one leg on either side.
