A Note on Severus Snape as a Teacher
In Order of the Phoenix, Snape makes his O.W.L. warning speech the first day and says he expects the class to maintain his high-pass level. This implies that he has better statistics than previous professors, or perhaps he is comparing to equivalent tests at the other European magic schools. He makes other comments to this effect and nobody contradicts him. Harry takes the fact that Umbridge doesn't go after Snape so much as being because they are both horrible people, but he clearly hates her just as much as the rest of the staff and it seems she's scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to get something to hold against him. If he had poor statistics, an auditor type like that would have been all over it. Either way, the implication is that despite being an absolute trash fire of a person and tearing down student confidence as a hobby, he's managing to actually teach potions well.
I read so many fanfics that imply or directly state that the reason Harry isn't doing well in potions is because Snape is bad at the job: He never learned basic prep skills, Snape only shoots recipes up on the board and doesn't explain, all his lessons are practical with no lectures. I submit that this isn't the case. Never was, as we do hear about lectures even if the books aren't great at giving us any kind of sensible timetable. Harry is distracted in Potions by the hostile environment, and that is Snape's fault, but the curriculum as presented isn't the problem. It's the fact that the class is with the Slytherin students, and that Snape makes a lot of ad-hominem attacks instead of telling Harry or Neville exactly what went wrong. Harry, because he is the living embodiment of all Snape's trauma just walking around giving the man flashbacks. Neville, because Snape gave up on him rather quickly. That's bad, flat out, and he even grades Harry unfairly... but Harry is still learning the material.
In Half-Blood Prince, we can even see that if Harry could learn from a version of Snape who wasn't hostile to him for some reason, he'd do fantastically well. Unfortunately, nobody told Snape to go talk to a therapist after the war, and frankly with how he treats Harry's Gryffindor class that should have been made a requirement for keeping his job. Handle your trauma, do not give it to a new generation of kids.
This is not an excuse for the way he acts as a bully, but Harry being 'bad' at potions isn't because Snape isn't presenting the material to him correctly. When acting like a teacher instead of like a bully, Snape is clearly very good at his job. He puts his everything into it, and can have the high bar of only accepting O students into his N.E.W.T. classes because he has enough students getting Os that the school board never had to call him out for not having enough students in the class.
Finally, Harry isn't bad at potions! This is before grade inflation, look that up if you aren't familiar or have a very different school system to the UK. Getting a top-level grade in any class was HUGE. The tests are hard enough the average person would not know all the answers. I took a science exam in the 90's and placed 4th in my state. I'd gotten 2 questions completely wrong (I'll never forget the differences between types of clouds again) and it was better than the thousands of high-school kids who took the test, except for the one person who got 1 partly wrong and 2 people who got 1 question wrong. Nobody, and I mean nobody, got a perfect score that year. That's what these tests used to look like. Hermione is a BEAST. Harry and even Ron are doing great! Straight Cs (or As in the HP world) used be fine. Average, even, and you could graduate with Ds even if you might not want any potential employer knowing about that if it was relevant.

Hello it's me with another very naive computer question!
One of the really common complaints you see about modern software (from Adobe, Microsoft, etc.) is the move from the single-purchase model to a subscription-based model. While I understand that people are upset about paying more money over time, this also feels like the only viable option for shipping products that work with modern OSes, especially Windows (I don't have any experience with MacOS). Windows pretty regularly updates, and if you want your product to continue to work, you have to continue paying your engineers to maintain compatibility through time.
Obviously I understand that there are lots of FOSS options out there, but for the companies that are built on making money from these sorts of software products, I don't see another way. Am I way off the mark here?
This is a really good question. I don't have a great answer, but the model I have in my head is that "traditional software distribution" is partially an artifact of an era where companies were starting to use computers but internet use was still spotty so providing support for software was just a very different ballgame. A lot of what I'm saying here is not like. Fact as much as it is my understanding of The Software Business from the side of someone who is a little involved in that but mostly not in that.
(This is mostly about "business software", that is to say, accounting packages, creative suites, design packages, modelling tools, etc. This model does not explain like. Spotify. But that's much easier to explain.)
You're not wrong that the subscription model really make sense given modern software development, where patches come out continuously and you get upgraded to the latest version every time something changes, but there has been a significant change in how software is developed and sold that makes it noticeably different. I think that the cause of this is mostly because it's finally practical to do contract-style deals with hundreds of thousands of customers instead of doing one-off sales like we used to do.
In the Traditional model you charge a pretty sizeable upfront cost for a specific version of the software, you buy Windows XP or Jasc Paint Shop 7 or whatever and then you get That Version until we release The Next Version, plus a couple years of security and support. When the next version hits, we stop adding any new features to your version, and when that hits end of life, you maybe get offered a discount to buy licensing for the latest version, or you drop out of support.
Traditional software with robust support typically costs an awful lot, Photoshop CS2 was $600 new in 2005, or $150 to upgrade from CS, because you're paying for support and engineering time in advance. A current subscription for just Photoshop is $20/mo, and that's after twenty years of inflation. Photoshop is also cheap, a seat for something like SolidWorks 2003 could probably have run you $3000-4000 easy. I can't even give you a better guess there because SolidWorks still doesn't sell single commercial licenses online, you have to talk to their salespeople.
The interesting thing to me about Traditional pricing was that I think it was typically offered to medium to small businesses or individuals, because it's an easy way to sell to smaller customers, especially if it's the 90's and you're maybe selling your software through an intermediary reseller who works with local businesses or just a store shelf.
Independent software resellers were a big business back in the day, they served as a go-between for the software company and smaller businesses, they sold prepared packages in a few sizes and handled the personal relationship of phoning you up and saying "Hey there's a patch for your accounting software so that it doesn't crash when someone's surname is Zero, we'll send you a floppy disk in the mail with some instructions on how to install it." Versioned standard releases are a thing you can put in a box and give to resellers along with a spec sheet and sales talking points. This business still exists but it's much smaller than it once was, it's largely gone upmarket.
If you were bigger, say, if you were a publishing house that needed fifty seats of editing software you'd probably call the sales department of Jasc or whoever and get a volume deal along with a support contract.
Nowadays why would you bother going through resellers and making this whole complicated pricing model when you could just sell subscriptions with well-established e-commerce tools. You can make contract support deals with individuals at scale, all online, without hiring thousands of salespeople. You can even provide varying support levels at multiple cost brackets directly, so you don't need to cultivate a direct business relationship with all your customers in order to meet their needs. Your salespeople handle the really big megacorp and government deals and you let everyone else administer themselves.
It also makes development easier. You can also deploy patches over the net, you just do it in software. You can obsolete older versions faster, since you can make sure most people are using the latest version, and significantly cut down on engineering time spent backporting fixes to older versions. I think a lot of this is straightforwardly desirable on most software.
Now, there are still packages sold by the version, and there are even companies selling eternal licenses.
Fruity Loops Studio is still a "Buy once forever" type deal.
MatLab can be purchased as a subscription or as a perpetual one-version license.
Windows is still sold like this, but also direct to customer sales of Windows are minimal, Windows is primarily sold to OEM's who preinstall it on everything.
But it's a dying breed, your bigger customers are going to want current support and while there are industries where people want to hang around on older versions, for a lot of software your customer wants the latest thing with all the features and patches, and they'd rather hold on to their money until later using a subscription rather than spend it all upfront. Businesses love subscriptions, they make accounts books balance well, they're the opposite of debt.
Personal/private users who might just want the features of Photoshop CS2 and that's fine forever don't matter to you. They're not your major customers. This kind of person is not a person who your business cares to service, so you don't really care if you annoy them.
Even in the Open Source business world, subscriptions are how the money is made, just on support rather than for the software itself. You can jump through relatively few hoops to run Ubuntu Enterprise or SUSE Enterprise Linux on your own systems for free, but really there's not much benefit to that unless you pay for the dedicated support subscription.
In many ways I think a lot of things have changed in this way, I have a whole thing about the way medium-scale industrial manufacturing has changed in the past thirty years somewhere around here.
While there are valid reasons you might want to buy a single snapshot of some software and run that forever, the reality is that that's a pretty rare desire, or at least that desire is rarely backed by money. If you want to do that you either need access to the source code so that you can maintain it yourself, or you need to strike a deal with someone who will, or it needs to be software so limited that it (and the system it runs on!) never need updates. Very few useful programs are this simple. As a result subscription models make sense, but until recently you couldn't really sell a subscription to small businesses and individuals. Changes in e-commerce and banking have enabled such contracts to be made, and hey presto, it's subscription world.

WOW!!!!!! Can you believe it? We're done and it's time for the CSSNS23 Roundup!!!
Tumblr media
Before we get started, I need to recognize and thank my team of mods, @winterbaby89 @jrob64 @stahlop and @ultraluckycatnd, without whom this event wouldn't have happened this summer! Please join me in giving them all the long distance internet group hugs!!!!
Tumblr media
And NOWWWWWWWW... Here we GOOOOO!!!!! Under the cut, unless Tumblr ate it.
@hufflepuffinstorybrooke opened us up this year on July 1 with a wonderful soulmates OS called If You're Lucky, Love Leaves Scars, that I was privileged to make artwork for. The fic left me in tears and melting at the same time!
On July 3, @teamhook posted the first chapter of her fic The Last Witch Hunter, inspired by the Vin Diesel movie of the same name. Only one ch so far, but I'm absolutely captivated and eagerly awaiting more! Very intriguing artwork by herself.
@spartanguard dropped her Killian's evil twin MC on July 5, Sons of Love and Death, with artwork by herself. That artwork, of two incredibly handsome guys shouldn't be as chilling as it is, but IT IS... The fic is completely written and she's been updating weekly, so we're on ch9 of 13. Just sayin, but I'm about ready to use a certain dagger on a certain evil twin.
July 7 @goforlaunchcee posted Smoke and Mirrors, a HOOT of a ghost story, with such lovely artwork by @piinfeathers that perfectly captures CS in this fic. Three chapters are up so far, and I can't wait for more!!!
July 10, @killiansprincss posted her OS A Court of Vines and Shadow inspired by A Court of Thorns and Roses, with absolutely gorgeous artwork by @hollyethecurious. I was not familiar with the source material, so I was completely surprised and delighted with this fic!!!
@athenascarlet posted her merman Killian OS on July 13, The Merman with a wonderful visual on Tumblr 😏 Just a regular night between a sheriff and her merman pirate... Would love to see more of this, but it's staying a OS... for now, she says...
Also on July 13, @anmylica posted the first chapter of Fly With the Black Swan with amazing artwork by @zaharadessert. We have two chs of ten up so far, and I'm sitting on pins and needles waiting for more!!!!
On July 15, @whatevenisthisbloganymore posted the first chapter of Forest View Apartments, a ghost story that has the questions swirling through my mind and eagerly awaiting the next installment! Amazing artwork by @undercaffinatednightmare!
Speaking of @undercaffinatednightmare, real life has been very rude lately and has left her unable to post her two planned fics for this summer, but she has managed to make the artwork for them both that you can find here and here! I love her writing so much and I know whenever RL lets up, both these fics are going to be wonderful!!! *EDITED* The first of her fics, A Charming Curse, has now posted and it promises to be FUN!!!
July 19, @deckerstarblanche posted An Offer She Can't Refuse, with more lovely artwork by @undercaffinatednightmare. Emily only planned two chs for this very hot and sexy Omegaverse fic, but she took it in a very angsty direction in the final scene of ch2, and so has now promised that she'll come back and add one more ch to give us all the happy ending we deserve!
July 22, @zaharadessert posted a very hot demon Killian OS, Sacrificial Lamb that made bloodthirsty Krystal VERY happy. I was once again privileged to make artwork for the fic, with an assist by @motherkatereloyshipper who was responsible for the Emma edit I used.
July 23, @mie779 posted the first chapter of Finding Caldera: The Hidden World of Dragons, with just lovely artwork by @undercaffinatednightmare. The adventure of this fic is just wonderful! We're on ch9 and nearing the end!
On July 25, it was my turn to post for the event! Into the Light was inspired by the 1987 movie The Lost Boys, my very first introduction to vampires and it has never left me! Incredible artwork was created by @motherkatereloyshipper that still just leaves me staring at it slack jawed!
@hollyethecurious posted the first chapter of The Law of Surprise on July 28. Now complete in three parts, this beautiful BEAUTIFUL but also heartbreaking fic was inspired by the law of surprise from The Witcher. Breathtaking artwork was provided by @eastwesthomeisbest and can be found here, here, and here.
@xarandomdreamx posted her CS Practical Magic AU A Crystalline Knowledge of Love and Magic on July 30. Beautiful artwork by @hollyethecurious. Only one chapter so far and my heart is so broken for Emma and Elsa but also completely in love with the story!!!!
Rounding out July, @caught-in-the-filter posted original artwork featuring ghost Emma and vampire Killian that was absolutely CHILLING!!!!
@snowbellewells started Aug off on the 2nd with an incredible one shot, Deluge! Gorgeous artwork by @eastwesthomeisbest. I am so hopeful that Marta will eventually write more of this wonderfully intriguing fic!!!
Then, @eastwesthomeisbest was so inspired by Marta's fic, she made her own original art in the same vein as the art she made for the fic. Absolutely breathtaking!!!
On Aug 8, @booksteaandtoomuchtv posted the Prologue and ch1 of Witchy Woman. I have sooooo been waiting for this fic and so far, four chs in, it is hitting ALL my buttons! Artwork coming soon from @cocohook38.
On Aug 10, @cs-rylie posted The Journal, a seriously SCARY fic, only 3 chs in, inspired by Native American legend. Artwork by me, again with a much needed assist from @motherkatereloyshipper who was responsible for Milah and the journal itself.
@iamstartraveller776 posted her new fic, To Cleave Destiny on Aug 13. Featuring Demon Killian, just this Prologue has me on the edge of my seat!!! Artwork coming soon from @cocohook38.
@exhaustedpirate posted Parent for Hire on Aug 14. A Mandalorian inspired fic, Caro has melted my Captain Cobra heart so many times already, only four chs in. She also did moodboards to accompany each ch that you can find on each of the Tumblr ch posts x x x and I was also privileged to make a banner for the fic.
On Aug 16, @grimmswan posted the first chs of TWO fabulous fics!!! Dracula in Storybrooke comes from the woefully underutilized Land of Untold Stories arc, and Love Bites (But So Do I) is a supernatural adventure of vampire Emma and werewolf Killian. Artwork coming soon from @cocohook38.
On Aug 18, @snowbellewells posted her second fic of the event, Carolina Moon. A fic inspired by the Nora Roberts novel of the same name, my heart is already, only two chs in, broken for Emma and on the edge of my seat waiting for more! Beautiful artwork again done by @eastwesthomeisbest!
@jrob64 posted Saying Goodbye and Moving On on Aug 20, a DESPERATELY NEEDED and ABSOLUTELY PERFECT fix-it fic from the Underworld arc. I was again privileged to make artwork for it, and I'm just gonna have to accept that I almost can't make picsets anymore without the aid of @motherkatereloyshipper. For this one, she was again responsible for ghost Milah.
Aug 22, @padfootprongslet posted the Prologue for Like Our Love (Falling Down and Over Again). A Mr. and Mrs. Smith inspired fic, my heart was absolutely SHATTERED in this first ch and I can't wait for more! I was again privileged to make a picset for this with @motherkatereloyshipper coming in the clutch entwining the rings.
On Aug 24, @jonesfandomfanatic posted Stolen From Time. Now complete in three parts, this fic was absolutely BRILLIANT!!! @motherkatereloyshipper made a beautiful video to accompany it.
Our final fic by @wyntereyez will post in the next few days. She’s dealing with a hurricane at the moment, so she’s excused! Artwork by spartanguard. Can't wait! *EDITED* the fic and art are both now posted!!! I melted at Kait’s artwork, and I cackled and melted repeatedly reading the fic!!!! AND I am BEYOND EXCITED that Jamie has more to come in this universe, because I NEEEEEEEEEEEED it!!!!!
That's it everyone! Please enjoy all these FABULOUS fics and artworks and be sure to give the authors and artists all the love they deserve!!!

50% of 118 is 59; 75% of 118 is 88.5; 90% of 118 is 106.2
Periodic Symbols are: H He Li Be B C N O F Ne Na Mg Al Si P S Cl Ar K Ca Sc Ti V Cr Mn Fe Co Ni Cu Zn Ga Ge As Se Br Kr Rb Sr Y Zr Nb Mo Tc Ru Rh Pd Ag Cd In Sn Sb Te I Xe Cs Ba La Hf Ta W Re Os Ir Pt Au Hg Tl Pb Bi Po At Rn Fr Ra Ac Rf Db Sg Bh Hs Mt Ds Rg Cn Nh Fl Mc Lv Ts Og Ce Pr Nd Pm Sm Eu Gd Tb Dy Ho Er Tm Yb Lu Th Pa U Np Pu Am Cm Bk Cf Es Fm Md No Lr
EDIT: As of November 14th 2023, I've decided to start keeping track of when a post does not include a single-letter element. Single-letter elements are, in order: H B C N O F P S K V Y I W U. These posts will be tagged with "missing single".
Spaces, capitalization, emojis, numbers, and punctuation will not be taken into account. For example, the term "lush🍃13garden" would still count for Mercury (Hg). Letters are the only thing that interrupt symbols.
Anything that isn't a tally is tagged with "not a tally", asks are tagged with "Arsenic Potassium Sulfur", and posts people tagged me in are tagged "Thanks for the tag!" (because "tag" and "tags" unfortunately can't be made with only elemental symbols. they could if we had G but we do not)
Some things to keep in mind:
I try to avoid any piece of moving media (video/gif) that has words in it of any kind. I'm already a transcriber as a job, and while I love it, I'm not gonna do it on my silly little side blog.
I usually don't analyze anything fandom-related, since nothing good can come from a fandom post leaving its circle. There are some exceptions I'll make, though.
I use a script to search for the symbols, but it can't read the words in images, so they have to be retyped into the script 100% manually. I'll most likely still do it, but just keep that in mind when sending in posts with lots of images.
I'll only analyze posts where it's very clear what order things are read in; charts, graphs, doodle pages, and other images with words all over the place won't be counted.
When it comes to URLs, I don't count them for the main tally unless they show up in a screenshot or as a tag somewhere in the thread; instead, the URLs of the users in the thread are listed out afterwards in their own separate tallies, with the elements listed in the order that they appear in the person's URL (this does not include URLs that only appear in screenshots/tags).
If you tag me in a post, I won't be counting anything that you added to the thread, though you will still be part of the secondary URL tally.
When I make a tally, I (usually) won't be adding my own comments, and on the occasions that I do, whatever is in my comment is not added to the final tally.
I tend to stray away from analyzing posts with other similar gimmick blogs already in them these days. This is because we all tend to influence each other's results- for example, if I analyzed a post where alphabetcompletionist tallied up all 26 letters, that would (potentially) artificially add Cd, Mn, and No to my tally. If I did end up doing this, I would be highlighting Cd, Mn, and No in a different color to denote that they would not have been there had I not reblogged from alphabetcompletionist directly.
My main account is not disclosed at this time; please do not try and find out what it is or I will block you. Another blog I run that is publicly known is @cantheykillmacbeth, if you just want to see more from me.
There might be times where I will accidentally reblog from someone other than the source of the post, or where I can't due to the source having been deactivated. If you go digging into the people that I reblog posts from, I am not responsible for what you see. If you blame me for what you saw from the people I happen to follow, then you shouldn't have gone looking in the first place. That's on you.
I will not be adding my gimmick to posts about serious topics. This is not because I do not care about these topics, but the exact opposite: I do not want the gimmick of this blog to be used to detract from anyone's message. These sorts of gimmicks are meant to add to the humor of a post, not act as a twisted punchline to a serious discussion. If you tag me in a serious post, you will be ignored (at best).
I don't care how you feel about gimmick blogs. I'm having fun and you can't change that. Seethe.

My Fic List
A virtual bookshelf of my Captain Swan fics! Links are for ao3. You will find: Finished Works Unfinished Words Coming Soon
Some of these pics are.. bad. But I’ve grown in my art attempts, so I keep them to remind myself.. no matter where we start, we always have room to grow.
Finished Works:
Tumblr media
Murphy’s Law - 28k words - 8 chapters Emma dreams about the first 6 seasons of OUAT, and then wakes up to the real world. Except now, weird shit keeps happening.
Tumblr media
Alternate Timeline - 143k words - 15 chapters AKA Captain Swan Kitchen Sink. Enchanted forest, no curse. This was basically a practice document. Test myself, see what I was capable of writing. There are some moments I am so very proud of.. and some that are cringe.
Shipping Wars - 1620 words - OS Rewrite of Emma arriving in SB in a modern AU. No EF, no magick, no curse, yet canon events stay pretty similar. I meant to continue this, but I can’t bring myself to write Emma with anyone other than Killian, so it’s staying as is. (Belongs in Graveyard WIPS, last on the list.)
Time after Time - 1230 words - OS Another OS that I meant to turn into something bigger. This one is about 9/11 and nods to the real “man with the red bandana”. Never Forget.  (Belongs in Graveyard WIPS, last on the list.)
Tumblr media
Regina’s Revenge - 32k words - 8 chapters (part one) A story about Regina dealing with Cora’s death, and what she could do to break Emma in revenge against Snow. Emma breaking is part two, and is in progress.
Collision - 367 words - OS Me attempting to write sad emotions, SF breakup. CS ideas on the back burner.  (extra chapters belong in Graveyard WIPS, last on the list.)
Pre-Wedding Scene - 569 words - OS Just a little snippet of Emma and Killian not meeting before their wedding. This led me to write Irish Betrothal.
Heat & Ice - 6k words - OS No curse AU, Emma finds herself in a frozen pickle, while Hook is struggling through the worst heatwave of his life. Opposites collide.
NYE One Shot - 1500 words - OS Just a little meet-cute.
Unexpected Miracles - 558 words - OS Teeny-Tiny OS to help grieve a lost friend.
Unfinished Works: (less details until these are complete)
Tumblr media
Irish Betrothal Emma realizes a few things about her life, and runs. Far, far away. It’s only by chance that the timing, and circumstances, lead her to a small town in Ireland, where Killian is figuring out his own life during a festival.. of love.. Where they still support strangers getting betrothed and married off like it’s 1825. Because.. why not?
Extras - Irish Betrothal Bonus content for IB.
Tumblr media
Chaos (the unplanned pregnancy one) A one night stand. A coma. And two people who feel drawn to each other. What could possibly go wrong?
Tumblr media
Connect the Prompts The CS story YOU, the reader, directs. Chapter one was a whim from a conversation, and the rest is reader guided. (And this is so. much. fun. to write!)
Virginity for Sale  At 17, Emma decides she’ll sell her virginity as soon as she’s legal..
Lost Memory Amnesia, witness protection, the fickle memory.. Emma doesn't even know her real name yet.
Smutcapades Um. The smutty one.. for practice purposes lol (prompts and criticism are welcome)
Tumblr media
Graveyard WIPS I blame Muse for this. So, whenever I find a scrapped WIP, I'll post here.. because I have saves everywhere, and I can never bring myself to fully delete..
Coming soon to ao3:
Threads of Destiny - Coming  Aug. 3 Hurt/Comfort for Jrob64 So this starts with a bang and it just keeps going. Jrob64 gave me a bingo card of pain that I used to make a rough plot..
The Journal - Coming Aug. 10 My CSSNS ghost story fic for 2023! It all begins with a book lost to time A story unfinished, dying to be told
S1Cursed!Killian fic Now I have to decide if I’m going ahead with the chapter in Graveyard (that got a lot more love than I was expecting), or the story idea that put it in the Graveyard. Or both?

Rules post!
Hey, I'm Aso!
To keep this short and sweet, I'm setting up ground rules. Especially considering I know some folks will try to cross this into the drama blog sphere.
This is purely for ARPGs(art roleplaying games) and original species! Do not send in unrelated content
Anon is allowed only for reviews from people in the CS, OS, and ARPGs that wish to stay anonymous. I will turn off anon if this is abused to spread gossip.
It is preferred if species owners send their own species/ARPGs in for my own ratings.
All species sent in must be viewable without joining a discord server. I can only join so many discords. This means that if you send in a discord-only species, it will not be rated.
All reveiws and rating are to be taken with a grain of salt.
I will not be hosting any PSAs. Nor will I be entertaining any claims of wrongdoing. This is not the space for it.
In fact, any ask that's 'x did y' or just 'x is a mean poopyhead' will be deleted. It's not constructive and helps noone.
On that note: gossip, slurs, aggressiveness, insulting, and namecalling will get deleted. Keep things neutral.
I will also answer questions.
In regards to my own species reveiws, I will be sticking purely to mechanical judgements. Specifically, how the species looks to someone clicking on it for the first time. my rating system is the same as from the toyhou.se thread.
Info on my ratings will be under the cut, as well as info to include when sending a species or ARPG in to review.
Original species
Species sent in for rating will be judged by the following, on a 1-5 scale
Affordability(adopts) - How affordable official adopts appear to be(0 being that you can expect to pay close to 4 digit sums, 5 being that the adopts hover around 2 digit sums in IRL currency) Afordability(MYOS) - How affordable MYOs are(See above, however, this will also look at species currency, too. 0 means the species has no MYOs(such as open species)) Ease of entry - How easy it is to join in (0 being that you could take 6 or more months to get a character without buying an adopt, 5 being that you're able to get a MYO almost immediately) Prompt payouts - How balanced the payouts for prompts are (0 being that there's no prompts at all, 5 being that prompts are balanced) Art payouts - How decent art payouts are outside of prompt art(0 being that there' no art payout outside prompt art, 5 being that they're generous) Ease of use - How easy it is to participate(0 being that onboarding is complex or confusing, 5 being that your grandma could figure it out) Ease of voiding - How easy it is to get a character taken out of the species(0 being that you cannot void your characters at all, 5 being that you can easily take your characters out without doing much more than asking they get deleted from the species databanks) Activities - If there's any activities outside of doing prompts or if there's events. (0 being no events or non-art activities, 5 being that there's frequent, balanced events or non art activities)
I need the following to rate a species:
The species name(or name of the species group)
A link to the species group(no discord servers!)(It has to be publicly viewable)
Whether the species is open, semiopen, or closed(If MYOs are involved in any way, it's closed)
ARPGs
ARPGs that do not involve original species will only be judged by Ease or Entry, Ease of Use, Prompt Payouts, Art Payouts, Ease of Voiding, and Activities, but still will use the 0-5 scale.
These include: Fandom ARPGs, Animal ARPGs, Genre-based ARPGs, basically ARPGs that are not focused on/limited to original species.
For regular ARPGs, I need the following:
ARPG name
Link to the ARPG(Again, no discord servers)
Regardless of if it's an original species or a nonspecies ARPG, I will be tagging with the species/ARPG name and a few descriptive tags for ease of searching. I will also be tagging with #rateyourspecies for tag blocking purposes.

Hiatus Just Became Indefinite
......If I ever find Murphy, I’m going to beat him to death with his damn law. And they’re never going to find the body.
SO! I’ve been getting increasingly fed up with Windows. Of course, I also am not a fan of Mac. What to do, what to do? Well, Mum has a friend who’s a computer wiz who swears by Linux. He got her set up with it and she’s not been having any problems, so why not? Back in February - 2020 - I gave him my desk top to overhaul, figuring I could use my laptop (which was never meant to be more than a portable around-the-house entertainment center) for a month or two.
...
By which we, of course, mean over a year.
I got my desk top back this past November and immediately realized that Mum does less with her computer than I do. I have tried - and failed - to figure out how to do things on my own, but have been too stressed out to contact her friend with a list o’ questions until recently.
By recently I mean ‘this was on the docket for this week’s days’ off’. In the meantime it was fine! I had my lap top. Things were great.
...
Yesterday the latest attempt by Microsoft to update FUBAREDed my lap top. After many hours running the Dell OS reinstall, having it fail, rerunning it, etc. I finally got to the point where it told me to restart my laptop so I could finish things.
It couldn’t find a bootable OS and turned off.
I SERIOUSLY CAN NOT EVEN TURN THIS THING ON.
Now, the good news it that I backed everything up on my external hard drive not too long ago. Okay, yeah, it’s been a few months, so I’ve lost stuff, but with, like, three exceptions it’s stuff that I have up on the internet someplace, so it’s not the end of the world.
The bad news is that my external drive is password protected and, like most things, only has options to open it on Windows and Mac. Which means all of my data is safe and sound and inaccessible! Not that it really matters because all of my big writing projects are on Scrivener and while they are working on a Linux version, it’s still in beta.
So, until I can figure out how to get Scrivener, Photoshop CS2, etc. all up and running on this machine - or access my old Windows drive that is mounted to the computer but is not opening (this is going to require not only an email, but screen captures), my existing writing projects are dead in the water.
YES I KNOW LINUX HAS A MILLION YOUTUBE HOW TO VIDEOS!!!!! I HAVE BEEN WATCHING THEM!!!!
The videos and such I’m finding are only really helpful if you have the exact Linux build they’re using. I don’t.
PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE COMMENTS WITH ‘I GOOGLED THE THING FOR YOU HERE ARE LINKS YOU’RE WELCOME!’
I’m a ludite, yes, but I’m not incompetent. Unless you specifically have sources to tell me how to install WINE, Scrivener, and Photoshop CS 2 on Xubuntu, or on that build in general, please just let me work this out with Mum’s friend. If he can get a 70 year old up and running on this softwear, he can do it with me. I have my list of questions, all I need are screen caps and I’m ready to start seriously trouble shooting this.
Now, I do have Libra Office and am familiar with it, so any new writing projects I come up with will go forward without a hitch and I can move them to Scrivener when I’m able. I’m not broke, so I can get my laptop looked at. Even if they can’t save the date, I should be able to access my external drive again, etc. Also, just before the system completely died I figured out how to turn OFF the stupid auto updates and do it manually, so I shouldn’t run into this again.
Basically I’m just super frustrated and about to go even quieter than planned and giving everyone a head’s up.
Hope you’re all having a better time than I am.

I just "remembered" (found saved code files) that back in 2014, that is to say in the last couple years of my undergrad schooling, I coded a workaround for a broken or incomplete pthreads implementation on my Nokia N900.
I wrote functions called `pthread_{create,join,exit}_KLUDGE` which called `pthread_{create,join,cancel}`, but also managed a linked list with one entry per thread.
There are actually two files. In one, each list node holds a boolean called "done". In the other, each list node holds a void * called "retval".
I don't feel like reverse-engineering what this was for and I'm going to just delete the files, but I think I have vague memories of something either not working or not being implemented because I had an old version of glibc. So I actually manually rolled my own backport/implementation which did enough of what I needed I guess.
Not too surprising, because that's the kind of person I am, and I was already technical enough to do that within a couple years into my CS education, but I wouldn't have remembered off the top of my head that even in my early twenties I was already doing that kind of stuff.
To be clear it wasn't elegant or neat or reusable. There's prints to stdout woven into these functions, dumping information about the linked list to the output so I could manually check that my code was doing the right thing. And it only worked at the source level by using macros to redirect standard functions like `pthread_create` to my wrappers like `pthread_create_KLUDGE`.
Also in one of the files, the "join" was very crude: it indefinitely loops over the linked list, breaking if the done variable is set to true, or sleeping for a second before trying again if not. To be best of my recollection I basically needed to implement my own joining because the underlying joining was misbehaving - returning before the other thread was really done - or maybe even pthreads synchronization primitives were misbehaving more generally.
So it's obviously one of those "good enough to get stuff done" solutions, not a "proper" one falling back to the right OS level theading/sychronization primitives or whatever. And there is a chance that I was actually doing something wrong... I doubt it, because by then I think I had good habits for carefully reading and following the documentation for interfaces, but nowadays I can see many more possible ways for code to be subtly broken in ways that might only be exposed on some systems, so it's possible.
Anyway, it was enough to let me test homework assignment code locally on my Nokia N900.
Just a neat little historical artifact from my life.

Sooo. I decided to draw V's sister from that ask I made yesterday and this is how far I've gotten with it (so yea its unfinished if you couldn't tell).
I gave her her father's eyes and mother's hair. Though she honestly looks more like her mom, maybe? Eh idk.
Also info:
Myung Kim
First Name Meaning: Brightness
Nicknames: Myu (Referred to by most people, including her parents, V, Jaehee, Zen, Yoosung, and Seven. I don't think Jumin is one to use nicknames lol)
Mungle (Jokingly by Seven, referring to how when she is angry she can be more terrifying than the Mongol warriors of the Mongol Empire)
*Age: 23 (AS) 24 (OS)
*Note: This is internationally. Korean she is 24 (AS) and 25 (OS)
Blood Type: A
Birthday: August 19th
Zodiac: Leo
Height: 5'3 ft (161 cm)
Weight: 125 lbs (56 kgs)
Status: Alive (All routes but Secret Ending)
*Missing (Secret Ending)
*Note: She is missing because after V died she became extremely withdrawn and depressed (even a bit suicidal) and eventually disappeared. She's fine (well she's alive at least) but has disconnected from everyone and nobody knows where she is. She moved away from Seoul to the southernmost area of South Korea (evading police officers because of a missing person report the RFA filed) to get away from everything. She battles with suicidal thoughts every day. This is assuming she is not the MC. If she were she would still become extremely depressed and withdrawn, but Seven and the RFA would be there so she would likely be ok. Mostly.
Occupation: Freelance Digital Artist
Affiliations: RFA (CS and DS)
Mint Eye (AS If MC)
Hobbies: Painting, Taking Walks In Gardens and Parks, Visiting Her Mother's Grave Weekly (AS Only)
Relatives: Father
Mother (Deceased In AS)
Step Mother (AS Only)
Jihyun Kim/V (Older Brother)
Sister (Half/Step-Sister in AS)
Lucy (Adoptive Niece; V's AE "Forgive Ending" Only)
Personality and Background kind of, just a description I suppose: Myung may appear to be a happy-go-lucky and cheerful girl, but she really isn't as cheerful as you may think. She is usually a mixture of calm as well as bright, and is also very perceptive. She can easily read people based on a variety of things, mostly facial expressions and body language. She also isn't a half-bad singer. She is extremely close to her brother, V, and is also in turn fiercely protective of him- in AS, he's the only family she has left (she honestly just doesn't like her father and really doesn't care about him whatsoever) and due to that she does everything in her power to make sure he's ok and always tells him that "Please tell me anything and everything that's bothering you, and let me help you whenever you need it." Of course, V doesn't take her up on her offer, instead lying to her about everything going on with Rika (knowing she would likely kill Rika the moment she found out what she had done) and Saeran. Myung may be V's little sister, but she can be very big-sisterly, and often people have mistaken her for being his twin or older sister because of the way she acts. When V dies in SE, Myung is extremely devastated, depressed, and due to having witnessed it (if she is the MC) she would be traumatized due to it and would obtain a severe phobia of guns. In SE if she is the MC she would be very, VERY conflicted about Saeran, but if she is not, it is likely she would never know what truly happened to V in the SE and as stated above, she would flee Seoul and start a new life in the southern area of South Korea without telling anyone, and there is a 50/50 chance she would either live out the rest of her days there, return to Seoul eventually, or commit suicide because of her brother's death and the chaotic mess Rika created. She also would, before going missing, always violently lash ou at the sight of Rika, with Zen and Jumin having to restrain her many times because she was just so enraged and upset with Rika that she honestly just wanted her dead. The violent lashing out at Rika thing happens regardless whether she is the MC or not in the SE. She avoids Saeran as much as possible if she is the MC of the SE.
This was a long post, sorry oof 😅 — Submission
You know I love seeing and reading about MCs! So, it’s really not a bother to me to see it. I love how you drew her, it really captures the personality that you were making yesterday. It sounds like a really tragic tale, but hey, not everyone has a really happy story. The pinks in her outfit make me really happy. But, she does sound like she needs a hug.
And, clearly, for her brother to be there for her just as much as she should try to pull him out of the darkness.

CS Father’s Day OS - “Of Love and Fathers”
Rating: G
Summary: A very fluffy Father’s Day one shot featuring Killian’s first Father’s Day!
Read on ao3 here
//
As usual, Killian woke at the crack of dawn and was at Hope’s side the second she stirred awake. Emma was sure he spent hours watching Hope sleep, hopelessly wrapped around her finger. If it was up to Killian, he wouldn’t spend a second apart from his baby girl. He could watch her curious blue eyes take in the world around her for the rest of his life and never tire of it.
In her nightstand, Emma has Killian’s first Father’s Day card right under the gift-wrapped box containing her gift to him. She and Mary Margret had a few - okay a lot - of laughs while attempting to shop for both Killian and her dad. The thought of buying Captain Hook, the pirate captain from the enchanted forest who spent much of his life in Neverland, a set of power tools nearly killed them. Really, purchasing them for him might have resulted in Killian killing himself. David, on the other hand, had taken up a few too many DIY projects around the farm. And as cliche as it is, Emma thought she’d get him some kinda power tool set thing. Honestly, she got him exactly what he had asked for because really what did Emma and Mary Margret know about power tools other than that David used them and that sometimes (read: often) they were loud. All this to say that Killian’s gift took a much longer time to figure out. Emma’s lucky it was ready in time for today.
Once soft sounds of a fussy baby start seeping through the baby monitor, Emma hears Killian’s gentle coos. “Good morning my little love.”
Emma giggles right along with Hope. Hearing the fearsome pirate captain coo to a baby in the sweetest voice imaginable still made her laugh a little. Slipping out of bed, she grabs her robe from the closet and makes her way to her husband and their daughter. Killian is leaning over the crib, tickling Hope’s belly telling her over and over again how pretty she is while she laughs at the ridiculous faces he’s making.
-------------
Nearly a year ago Emma was feeling particularly miserable to the point that Killian, at times, wanted to stab himself with his own hook just to stop her from screaming at him for just about everything. If she wasn’t testing his patience, she was throwing up or crying which hurt him in an entirely different way.
After a particularly grueling morning, Emma took the day off from work. In the quiet solitude of an empty house, her mind was clear enough to recognize what might be going on which, of course, led to more crying. Because they hadn’t talked about this. Because she wasn’t sure they were ready. Because she wanted this so desperately. Because part of her knew that in their conversations about the future, the unspoken meaning of “we” was “us and our children.”
So she took a test. And it was positive. And it took every fiber of being to not run down to the station and shower Killian in a million and more kisses.
When Killian got home that night, Emma was waiting for him in the living room with a pale yellow gift bag which might have confused him if he wasn’t so happy to see her smiling at him.
“Are you feeling better, love?”
“Much better,” Emma said, handing him the bag. “I have a surprise for you.”
Killian kissed her cheek as he took the bag from her. He pulled out a small white onesie with a blue anchor on it and read the text out loud. “Daddy’s little sailor?” He asked. Then it hit him and his eyes met hers. “Swan are you pregnant?” Killian asked softly, his voice barely a whisper as tears pooled in his eyes.
Emma nodded. “We’re having a baby.”
Killian swept her up in his arms, careful not to hurt her with his hook, and spun her around. When her feet touched the floor again he kissed her. She could taste his tears against his lips. His hand was still clutching the small item of clothing. “We’re having a baby,” Killian repeated. “I’m going to be a Papa.”
----------
“A shilling for your thoughts, love?” Killian’s voice pulls her out of her thoughts. He was cradling Hope, who was clutching Killian’s hook with her tiny hands, in his arms.
“I was just thinking about how wonderful you are with her.”
Killian grins, dipping his head to press his lips against Hope’s temple. “I never thought it was possible to love someone this much.” Hope’s wide eyes watch the way the morning sunshine dances on the shiny silver of Killian’s hook that now dons a rubber pink protector to keep Hope from hurting herself on the end of it.
Emma wraps her arms around his waist from behind, resting her cheek against the back of his shoulder. “Happy Father’s Day, Killian.”
Killian is genuinely confused. “Happy what?”
“Father’s Day.”
“Are you making up holidays now, Swan?”
Emma released him from her arms and moved to step in front of him to figure out if he’s joking with her or not. He’s not. “Have you never heard of Father’s Day?”
“No.” Killian sighs. “I never had a father worth celebrating.”
Emma tries to remember celebrating in years past but the first few Father’s Days here she spent alone with Mary Margret and David and when Killian came into her life he’d cover for them at the station so they can spend the day together. This time, a new deputy was covering so that Killian could enjoy the day as well.
“Well,” Emma starts, “remember when we celebrated Mother’s Day? This day is yours, babe. You’re a wonderful father and we love you so much.” Emma turns to Hope, tickling her belly. “Isn’t that right Hope? We love Daddy very much.” Hope giggles in response, causing Killian to smile.
“Daddy loves you too my little starfish.”
Emma kisses him softly. “We’re heading to my parents for a barbecue around 3 but the whole morning is yours. We can do whatever you want.”
Killian raises an eyebrow at her. “Whatever I want?”
Emma rolls her eyes. “Aye, Captain.”
He looks at Hope. “Want to spend the morning on the Jolly, little starfish?”
They spend the morning on the Jolly, enjoying some brunch and the sea breeze while the ship remained docked. They walk Hope around the whole ship as Killian talks incessantly about the ship and his adventures and Emma listens, enraptured as always by the way Killian tells a story (even ones she’s heard multiple times). He’s a real-life storybook character albeit with a more indecent past with the women he’s seduced and the people he’s killed and stolen from. She finds it amusing how he skips over those parts when he’s talking to Hope.
Truthfully, Killian’s biggest fear is still what Hope will think of him when she finds out. It’s impossible to hide his past when it’s written in Henry’s storybook. As many times as Emma reassures him that Hope will love him not matter what because he’s her daddy and she’s his starfish and he is absolutely brilliant with her, Emma knows this fear will be something he lives with for a long time.
Time flies as Killian recounts his adventures and soon it’s time to head over to see her parents. Henry, Robin, Regina and Roland beat them there and Henry and Roland are already sparring with David by the time they park the car. Mary Margret fawns over Hope, complaining that she doesn’t get to spend enough time with her beautiful grandbaby and Killian nearly frowns when she’s no longer in his arms. Robin greets Killian with a clap on the back
“I think it’s time for presents!” Mary Margret squeals after they have dinner on the back deck. Henry leaves with her to grab everything. Somehow the two of them manage to carry everything to the table and both David and Killian blush furiously.
“Mine first!” Henry says, handing David a large wrapped box. Inside was a new saddle blanket for David’s horse in Northeastern University red and white. After a bear hug from his grandfather, Henry handed Hook a red gift bag. “Happy Father’s Day, Hook.”
It took Killian a second to process what was happening. He would’ve cried if he didn’t have a reputation to maintain. “Thank you, mate.” Inside was a dark grey t-shirt with white and gold lettering that read “Northeastern Dad.” Pulling the shirt out of the bag and reading what it said, pushed Killian over the edge, a single tear slipping from the corner of his eye. He quickly stood and pulled Henry into a tight embrace. “Thank you.”
“Mom got a Northeastern Mom one when we were moving in. I thought it was time you had a matching one. Now you can both look equally embarrassing when you’re moving me in in August.”
Killian chuckled. “Don’t give her any -”
“That’s a BRILLIANT idea!” Emma squealed.
“Ideas.” Killian sighed as he finished his sentence, still smiling brightly at the family he now had, the family he had always wanted but never believed he deserved.
“Okay okay. It’s my turn.” Emma said. David opened the set of power tool things and proceeded to explain what he would use each tool and feature for. Finally, it was time for Emma to give Killian his gift. It was a small wrapped box, only slightly larger than the size of Killian’s hand. In the box is a pocket sundial. Since Killian refuses to wear a watch, Emma thought this would suit him more. It’s solid brass and with his name engraved on the outside and a photo of him and Hope from the first time they took her to the Jolly on the inside. “Happy Father’s Day, babe.” Killian looked up from the sundial to see Emma holding their daughter. His heart was suddenly filled with more love than he ever believed was possible for one man to feel.
Robin rested his hand on Killian’s shoulder. “Happy Father’s Day, mate. Isn’t it the best feeling in the world?”
Killian grinned at his friend. “Aye. Happy Father’s Day.”
Roland gave Robin a handmade card, which was quite possibly the most adorable thing in the world, and a new set of arrows that were hand painted fun colors (which were clearly a joint effort between Regina and Roland).
Mary Margret, as a joke, had t-shirts that said “Hot Dads of Storybrooke Crew” on them made for  David, Robin, and Killian which elicited howls of laughter from all three of them when they opened them at the same time. Their last names were on the back, like a jersey, and their numbers reflected the order in which they became fathers - Nolan 01, Locksley 02, Jones 03. The rest of them roll their eyes at the men’s now even more inflated egos. Seconds after opening them, the “Hot Dads of Storybrooke Crew” plans to wear them together at Roland’s next soccer match. Town summer soccer matches turn into mini festivals with all different food being sold for fundraisers, music and dancing for the kids, and adult beverages for the parents.
Hope was fast asleep on the drive home and Emma was barely awake herself while Killian drove. He put Hope to sleep while Emma showered and got ready for bed. She read a bit of a book Killian had recommended to her while he did the same afterwards before climbing into bed.
“Emma?” Killian asks, rolling on his side to face her.
She knows by the look in his eyes that this is moving in a more serious direction. Killian clearly has something on his mind. Emma sets the book down and turns on her side to face him “What’s on your mind, Jones?”
Killian's hand rests on her hip. “I uhm -”
Not often does Killian get flustered, but now he was blushing furiously. “Talk to me, babe.” Emma cups his cheek, her thumb stroking soothingly.
“Have you thought about having another baby?” Killian whispers.
“Maybe.” Emma grins. “Have you?”
“Aye.” Killian returns her smile.
“And do you want another baby?”
Killian kisses her softly. “Aye, love.”
“Me too.” Emma rests her forehead against Killian’s. “Watching you with Hope has been the most incredible thing in the world, Killian. I love you with all my heart.”
“I love you, too. Always. To the end of the earth and time.”

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6 Torrent
Adobe Lightroom 57 Download Torrent Software
Buying Lightroom used to be simple. All you had to do was buy the full version of the program, and upgrade (if you wished) every time a new version came out. But ever since Adobe announced the Creative Cloud subscription service, photographers have been faced with two choices. You can still go for the standalone version, or you can buy Lightroom as part of a Creative Cloud monthly membership. But how do you know which is the best option for you? Read on to find out.

Create incredible images of complex high-contrast scenes. The new HDR Combine dazvaliae combines more recordedimages with different exposure locations in a high dynamic image of a malicious.
Creative Cloud is announced
Adobe’s initial announcement of the Creative Cloud licensing concept was somewhat controversial as the price for a subscription to Photoshop ran at $20 a month (all prices in this article are in US dollars). For photographers who had already purchased the full version of Photoshop this represented a significant price increase. Not only was subscribing more expensive in the long run, compared to upgrading Photoshop regularly, but the license to use the software expired once monthly payments stopped.
There’s little doubt this was a raw deal, but Adobe listened and introduced a new package for photographers – a subscription to both Lightroom and Photoshop CC for $9.99 a month (or $119.88 per year).
Read about this on forums and photography websites and you will still come across a lot of negativity towards the Creative Cloud subscription model, especially from Photoshop users upset at the loss of a perpetual licence. But today, I aim to cut through this negativity and take an objective look at the differences between the two options.
Two types of Lightroom users
To start, we have to acknowledge that there are two types of Lightroom users.
The first uses Lightroom in conjunction with Photoshop and wants access to both programs. For this user, the Creative Cloud option is the only choice if you want the latest version of Photoshop CC. Alternatively, if you own a version of Photoshop CS and are not bothered about upgrading to Photoshop CC, you can buy the standalone version of Lightroom and use them together.
The second type of user carries out the bulk of their image processing in Lightroom. For tasks Lightroom can’t handle, they may use an older version of Photoshop, a less powerful program like Photoshop Elements, or a plug-in such as the Nik Collection or Perfect Photo Suite 9. These users may be wondering whether to continue using the standalone version of the software or to subscribe.
Financial considerations
If you are on a budget, and don’t need Photoshop CC, then it is definitely less expensive to buy the standalone version of Lightroom. At the moment a new version of Lightroom comes out approximately every 18 months. At $9.99 a month, the subscription service would cost you $179.82 over that period. If you are new to Lightroom, the full version (priced at $149 from the Adobe website) saves you money, and if you already own Lightroom, then the upgrade (priced at $79) is even less, saving you a little over $100 over the same time period.
As a standalone version user you get free upgrades until a full new version comes out. So, if you upgraded to Lightroom 5.0 when it first came out, you can upgrade to the latest version (5.7) for free, taking advantage of new features introduced since then. But when Lightroom 6 comes out, you will need to pay the upgrade fee to use it. Upgrading isn’t compulsory, and you can continue to use your earlier version of Lightroom as long as you want.
Adobe have stressed their commitment to continuing the standalone version of Lightroom for the foreseeable future.
Note:The standalone version of Lightroom is a little hard to find on Adobe’s website. You can get there by going to Adobe’s home page and clicking the Menu option at the top. Click the All Products button at the bottom, scroll down to Lightroom and click Buy. Or you can also find it here on Amazon.
What the Creative Cloud subscription gives you
The Creative Cloud subscription is more expensive, so what do you get for that extra money? The two headline features are Photoshop CC, a powerful image editing program that you are likely familiar with, plus access to Lightroom Mobile, a mobile version of Lightroom that works with iPads and iPhones (but not currently with devices using the Android or Windows operating systems).
There are several additional features that may interest some people, such as 2GB of online storage space, access to Lightroom Web and the ability to use Photoshop CC and Lightroom on multiple machines (although not at the same time).
What happens when the Creative Cloud license ends?
If you stop paying your subscription fee you no longer have the right to use the full versions of Photoshop CC and Lightroom. Photoshop will stop working completely (or at least until you renew the subscription).
But Lightroom is different. Bear in mind that with Lightroom your Raw files are untouched. The edits you make are stored in the Catalog. If you lose access to the Catalog, you lose access to all the edits you have made to your images, including all post-processing.

Adobe doesn’t want that to happen, so it gives you partial access to Lightroom even if you cancel your Creative Cloud subscription. You have full access to the Library, Book, Print, Slideshow and Web modules. The Develop module is severely restricted (you can’t make any adjustments using the right-hand panels) and there is no access to the Map module.
Your Catalog remains intact, including any Collections you’re created and any changes to metadata, including ratings and keywords. So does your post-processing, and the ability to make basic edits to photo files using the Quick Develop panel. You can also export your photos any time you want.
You need to have Lightroom Version 5.5 or later installed for this to work.

Conclusion
Hopefully you are now clearer about how the two ways of buying Lightroom differ, and which is best for you. If you want to use the most up to date version of Photoshop CC, or Lightroom Mobile, then the Creative Cloud subscription service is the choice for you.

However, if you don’t require the latest version of Photoshop CC, or Lightroom Mobile, then buying the standalone version is the least expensive way to go.
What do you think? Have Adobe got it right with the price and services offered for the Creative Cloud Photography plan? Do you use the Creative Cloud version of Lightroom or the standalone version? Please let us know in the comments.

       ◇─◇──◇────◇────◇────◇────◇────◇─────◇──◇─◇
For someone in a quite literal life-or-death situation, you were taking the news of your possible demise rather well. Perhaps that doesn't say much for someone in your line of work. Space exploration was a risky business, and coming home was not always guaranteed. Most, if not all who worked for the Federal Alliance of Astronomic Exploration knew that possibility before they signed on the dotted line.
You didn't expect it would be on your first solo mission, though.
In hindsight, your day seemed a little bit too perfect leading up to this mess, and maybe your cynical subconscious was expecting this pivotal point where everything goes south. Regardless, you weren't one to sit by while cursing your misfortune. And overall, it could be even worse. At least the life support was still functioning.
Oh, how you wished there was wood somewhere on the ship.
Standard protocol demands that regardless of the severity of the crisis, the ship's captain - in your case, yourself - was to immediately activate the emergency beacon and contact mission control. Step one was already a fail. According to the diagnostic scans, communications, navigation, and the engines were severely damaged and would take hours or even days for the self-repair bots to make any sort of significant progress. So, channeling in your former academy student self, you skipped right on to Plan B.
"Greetings, Lieutenant."
Or rather, Plan B skipped right on to you.
You nearly jumped out of your chair but managed to only give a startled gasp. Wheeling around, you came face to face with Plan B. For a glorified chunk of metal, it sure did move quietly.
"Are you alright?" said chunk of metal asked with a surprising amount of realism to his...its tone. "I detected a sudden increase in your heart rate. Are you in need of medical attention?"
You stared, temporarily taken aback by its sudden appearance. Sure, you were briefed on the purpose of the Auxiliary Crisis Sensory Emulating Learner, or ACSEL for short, but seeing one activated was an entirely new experience. The almost lifelike expression was truly something to behold, and you really ought to give a shout-out to the techs back home who made this happen. If you made it home...
Which led back to the matter at hand.
"No, I'm okay. You just surprised me, that's all," you sighed. "I didn't receive a notification that you were activated."
The ACSEL unit tilted its head and narrowed its eyes as if contemplating. It really was going to take some time getting used to those mannerisms on an android. "Perhaps there is an error in the ship's software?" It lightly smiled while extending its right hand towards you. "The CS Zenith is equipped with self-diagnostics and repair, yes? If I may, I would like to run an additional test. Permission to proceed, Lieutenant?"
You blinked, finally breaking yourself away from your thoughts to fall back into professionalism. Standing up and squaring your shoulders, you firmly shook his - its hand. To your ever-growing surprise, it was warm and smooth, yet undeniably solid. Almost like silicone.
"Granted," you replied before stepping to the side. It easily slid into the pilot's chair and instantly brought up the ship's readings. Nothing had changed. You watched in silent fascination while the android worked the dashboard as if it had years of experience under its belt. But your curiosity returned, and you found yourself wondering just how long it took to make something as complex as the ACSEL unit. Its designer obviously modeled it off of human anatomy, not too dissimilar to a store mannequin. The white exterior was a stark contrast to the muted colors of the cockpit. Gray lines decorated its body, allowing seamless, free-range movement that added to the realism. Give it a wig, slap some clothes on it, hide the port at the base of its head and you could definitely see someone mistaking the machine for a human. It even imitated a non-robotic masculine timbre almost perfectly.
The most intriguing thing about it though was the eyes. Glowing, electric blue eyes.
"Lieutenant?"
"Yes?"
"While my system processes the damages, would you like to begin personalization?"
You raised a brow. "What for? I had thought you would be outfitted with knowledge about my basic information once you were activated?"
The android flicked a switch on the dashboard, allowing a port to be exposed before inserting its index finger. In any other situation, it would have been comical, but you surmised that this was a part of the machine's processing. "And you would be correct. However, I am referring to myself. One of my functions is personalization to assist with lessening the emotional and psychological impact that an emergency could have. Once I have established that the current environment is stable enough for such, of course," it explained before pausing. "In short, it is to make you feel more comfortable."
"Right..." you trailed off, idly scratching your cheek.
"The process is completely optional if you are satisfied with my default settings," it added gently. " I do not wish to provide you with unnecessary stress."
Chuckling, you waved him - it off dismissively. "It's not that. I just...never mind. How about starting with what I should address you as?"
It gave you a side glance, lips turned upwards once more. "I respond to my model and serial number, A.C.S.E.L. 749710145-121111117-110-103, but due to its length I can be assigned a temporary moniker of your choosing until I undergo a factory reset."
You were sorely tempted to name it something utterly ridiculous. You could almost feel the disapproval from your superior officer at the mere thought of it.
"If it aids you at all, the engineers had named me Blue during my trial period," it offered.
How innovative.
"Blue works," you said at last, much to the android's delight. Could it even feel such a thing? It certainly seemed so as you watch its smile turn into a wide grin and the blue irises rotated in recognition. Nevertheless, you returned the smile albeit hesitantly. "Status update."
"Ah...my systems have confirmed the Zenith has experienced internal engine failure, significant damage to the transmitter and faulty wiring to the navigation. Causes are inconclusive. Hull integrity and life support are operating at 100% efficiency. The estimated time of repair is between 96 and 125 hours."
You relaxed ever-so-slightly. A week wouldn't make much of an impact on your scheduled three-month journey to Alpha Centauri's space outpost. And with the beacon activated, your chances of getting out of here unscathed are highly in your favor. "Noted. Then proceed as needed. I'm going to check on the cargo," you stated.
"No need, Lieutenant," Blue assured while standing. It approached you before clasping its hands behind its back. "I will take that responsibility while you rest. You have been showing signs of minor sleep deprivation in addition to a decrease in your epinephrine levels."
Perplexed, you crossed your arms, suddenly feeling a wave of self-consciousness. "You can gauge my adrenaline? How?"
Maybe you said that a bit too forcefully because Blue actually flinched, as if surprised at your tone. Never in your life did you think you would feel regret for snapping at a machine. You must really be more exhausted than you thought.
"Not through nefarious means, I promise," he - it faltered. "My optic sensors can detect even the subtlest of movements. I...I noticed your body language gradually became more relaxed and your heart rate slowed. My intention was not to cause you distress, Lieutenant. I apologize."
Jesus Christ, you genuinely felt bad now.
"Uh, don't be. I should be apologizing. Getting snippy with you was highly unprofessional," you murmured wearily. Rubbing your left temple, you glanced up to see him observing you with an open stare. Looking closely, you could see his irises whirling. Processing information, perhaps? "Blue?"
It blinked and smiled as if amused. "Apologizing to a machine is unnecessary. I do not feel offended. Though I suppose the gesture is an indication of your good nature, so I thank you."
"You're...welcome?" That's enough weirdness for one day, you thought to yourself. "I will go take my leave then if you don't need me for anything else."
"Not at all, Lieutenant. Please sleep well."
"You too." Biting your tongue, you inwardly cringed at your automatic response. "I mean-"
Blue laughed, apparently unfazed by your slip up. "I shall, thank you."
As you departed from the cockpit, you rubbed the heel of your palm against your right eye. It was the strangest thing; talking to a machine that seemed so human. The FAAE had an abundance of the latest technology, including interactive AI programs. But Blue was the most advanced piece of work you had ever interacted with. It was almost jarring.
The walk back to your quarters was a short one, as the Zenith was one of the smaller cargo ships. Your room lacked any personal items and only housed the bare necessities such as a bed, closet, a small desk, and bathroom. The lights flickered on and the door hissed shut, leaving you to bask in privacy. Eyelids heavy, you decided to shower in the morning. A casual glance at your holopad showed the time back home: 8:47 A.M.
Make that in the evening.
Zipping down your flight suit, you tossed it on the chair before rummaging your closet for a shirt and sweatpants. "Computer. Set an alarm for 4:00 P.M."
      ◇─◇──◇────◇────◇────◇────◇────◇─────◇──◇─◇
The cockpit was relatively silent, save for the gentle hum of the reactor core only Blue could hear. Most of the overhead lights had been dimmed, indicating that the Lieutenant had gone to sleep. The android remained in the chair, perfectly still for 72.8 seconds before closing its eyes.
"ACSEL Unit reporting to Professor Thorne. Do you copy?"
Static feedback permeated its receptors. It felt its nonexistent brow crease in concentration. A few moments passed until it could faintly hear a reply.
"Proceed," was the garbled response.
"Preparing to upload visual and audio recordings as well as acquired data to the server...now." The surge of data left its system almost instantaneously, even from such a distance.
Thorne gave a pleased hum. "Continue your directive and ensure the subject remains incognizant until your arrival. Understood?" they emphasized.
"Yes, Professor."
The connection abruptly ended and Blue rapidly blinked back into focus.
Only the sight of stars and the vastness of space greeted the android. Tilting its head to the side, Blue zoomed in as much as his optics would allow on a particular star. The celestial body remained as but a speck of light to its viewpoints. These rare moments of free agency were captivating, and although it could merely emulate emotion, Blue's receptors always reacted positively. It struggled to understand why the professor always voiced against it. No matter. Such a variable was not programmed within its systems to be of concern. Even so, it remained enamored by the dangerous amalgamations of hydrogen and helium that roamed the universe.
"아름다운..." Blue whispered, unaware that it had spoken at all.
