hello again!! as someone who comes from the 2020 fandom resurgence I am. SO SORRY. that happened a lot unfortunately. yeah we did NOT know how to act early on (ToT). I had the vibe it was a lot of people's first online fandoms.

the ship with two guys in it being dubbed butter pecan because of something something 'a lot of nuts' is again, so, so funny. Thank you for enlightening me on this, I know it's probably wild to be asked about this stuff like a decade after. This is like honestly a bit of a mystery in the fandom so it's insane finding out the source!! A real miracle the person who coined it so long ago is still active on tumblr

And speaking, it is and was INSANELY hard to dig for any 'fandom history' or even just any sort of Old post on here and I hate it.

another little question if that's okay- I'd assume that seeing the change in reception to freemance and freehoun kinda swapping around must've been bizarre as an older fan considering this was a fandom for a fps game in the early 2000's-early 2010's, in my head the vibes were kinda reversed where freemance was the big ship and freehoun was less well received by most

i think it's super funny because both half-life: alyx and hlvrai came out within weeks of each other so you had this sort of resurgence on here of old fans returning/posting and getting excited for alyx and then a huge wave of people getting into hl in general because of the audience that hlvrai introduced. personally, i still haven't watched hlvrai because it doesn't really seem like my thing, but i'm still glad that there were so many people who enjoyed it to the point where they actually ended up playing and loving the games too!!

freemance definitely was the big ship on tumblr back in the day so yes it was very interesting to see that reversal!!!! honestly i don't think i was on tumblr too much during that time where hlvrai/freehoun really took off, and so the drama surrounding ship wars or whatever was mentioned to me secondhand. 2020 was just like the worst year of my life for personal reasons, as i'm sure for a lot of people, and i can't remember really any of it tbh LOL but you've got nothing to apologize for! i think you're definitely right, it seemed like a first fandom for many people, and that generally skewed younger. i think (hope) it's a better now at least!

tumblr's tagging/tracking/search is HORRIBLE i completly understand. i still think tumblr is the best place for fandom centralized stuff (pictures, art, gifs, etc) and until there's a new platform that does it better, i'll probably still be here, if super sporadically!

1. “Tumblr is not easy to use” the rest of us got it, didn’t we? Also it got significantly harder and messier to use based on what changes were made since 2017!

2. “Experiment with logged-out Tumblr” take it back to how it looked in 2017 where the signup page promoted a single, classy-looking work of art (left), instead of whatever this is (right):

3. "We must deliver great content each time the app is opened." Yes but No. Yes you want the content to be representative of what Tumblr is about and to be of high quality. But don't go searching for something forcefully. CREATING that content is NOT your job. That's OURS. You need to encourage Tumblr users to produce so much high quality content on their own (again) that it simply becomes the average view upon opening the app. That happens by making the users relaxed and worriless, by giving them ease and control. Right now, the very crashing use of this site seems a hotter topic than to make art and write poems. Why are we engaging in the Twitter war instead of baking elephant-shaped raisin bread? Because we're too worried we could lose this site. STAY AWAY FROM ALGORITHMS.

4. "Addressing the confusion within replies and reblogs." We tag each other. Problem solved. The only real problem that makes everyone very uncomfortable and sents them rightfully running from a post is this:

We'd rather see everything than wonder what happened. This creates too much insecurity and is the start of censorship. If there's an unwanted comment there, we can just block the person. Just get rid of the pornbot infestation.

5. "Lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs." No. Lack of feedback stems from the fact that I can't search for new blogs (also a feature from back in 2017). I haven't really followed a new person in years. Why? Because blogs aren't recommended in the search function. WHERE I SEARCH FOR THEM. Which I want to do. Which I don't anymore because unwanted stuff is shoved onto my dashboard. Now I just want to get rid of the annoyance. Let people search for what they want.

There's also the aspect where Tumblr has lost almost all its visual appeal due to the shitty blog view. It was a calm side drawer which allowed a quick overview, like this (left):

The central pop-up (right) is so messy and non-functional. Notice how the description and the first post are entirely cut off. You don't know where to look first, where to click, what to do.

Alternatively, clicking on a blog was used to open a new tab. In 2017, people made use of their blog page filling the entire screen. They made elaborate and complex blog designs, bought templates and experimented with the HTML. Every blog was beautiful and showed the user's investment like a Carrd (left). They also counted on the entire internet reading their blog, not just Tumblr users. With the sign-up wall, this is no longer possible, so why bother? Now, everyone uses basic templates because nobody actually goes on people's full blog views anymore (right). The art of blog design has been lost. Gosh we had music players on there! Less artsy pages means cheaper memes and shitposts which means less quality art and less engagement with fanart, which makes Tumblr slowly become a text-only-based site that talks about nothing but its own function. It's as if Whatsapp users kept saying "Whatsapp is so shitty why are we still here" instead of messaging others, which is its use. A site's use must become an art or become invisible, but it can NEVER be the content of its own conversation.

6. "Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral." Turn off notifications, done.

7. "Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr." I don't want to be spammed by e-mails. People will come when the site is amazing enough. It used to be (guess when. Guess). And it can be again. People need to be drawn to this site, not to be reminded that it exists. Tumblr has the potential to be fascinating.

8. "Improve performance, stability, and quality" Yes. But don't shove Tumblr Labs on us. We will come, attracted like mice, if something is good. THAT'S HOW TUMBLR WORKS.

Please think about what "letting the user control their experience" means.

Social media becomes an increasingly passive advertising game. The user has no control over their experience. The user must receive tools to create, not have their experience thrown at them by math. Users like to act intelligent, not to look at artificial intelligence.

TLDR: @staff If you went fully, 100% back to 2017 Tumblr, I would scream with joy. The crabs and frogs felt like that. That's why we liked them. Because it was harmless art. Fix the following things: Bot infestation, blog view should be sidebar not central, enable people to search for blogs again, don't hide replies, get rid of the sign-up wall and bring the more beautiful log-in page back. Additional: Get rid of Community Labels and Tumblr Live.

Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy

Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. We’re publishing it publicly for the first time, in an effort to work more transparently with all of you in the Tumblr community. This strategy provides guidance amid limited resources, allowing our teams to focus on specific key areas to ensure Tumblr’s future.

The Diagnosis

In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience. 

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content. 

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Retain and grow our creator base.

Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

Principle 1: Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Tumblr has a “top of the funnel” issue in converting non-users into engaged logged-in users. We also have not invested in industry standard SEO practices to ensure a robust top of the funnel. The referral traffic that we do get from external sources is dispersed across different pages with inconsistent user experiences, which results in a missed opportunity to convert these users into regular Tumblr users. For example, users from search engines often land on pages within the blog network and blog view—where there isn’t much of a reason to sign up. 

We need to experiment with logged-out tumblr.com to ensure we are capturing the highest potential conversion rate for visitors into sign-ups and log-ins. We might want to explore showing the potential future user the full breadth of content that Tumblr has to offer on our logged-out pages. We want people to be able to easily understand the potential behind Tumblr without having to navigate multiple tabs and pages to figure it out. Our current logged-out explore page does very little to help users understand “what is Tumblr.” which is a missed opportunity to get people excited about joining the site.

Actions & Next Steps

Improving Tumblr’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to be in line with industry standards.

Experiment with logged out tumblr.com to achieve the highest conversion rate for sign-ups and log-ins, explore ways for visitors to “get” Tumblr and entice them to sign up.

Principle 2: Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

We need to ensure the highest quality user experience by presenting fresh and relevant content tailored to the user’s diverse interests during each session. If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product.

The default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application. Additionally, we need to ensure that when people search for content related to their interests, it is easily accessible without any confusing limitations or unexpected roadblocks in their journey.

Being a 15-year-old brand is tough because the brand carries the baggage of a person’s preconceived impressions of Tumblr. On average, a user only sees 25 posts per session, so the first 25 posts have to convey the value of Tumblr: it is a vibrant community with lots of untapped potential. We never want to leave the user believing that Tumblr is a place that is stale and not relevant.

Deliver great content each time the app is opened.

Make it easier for users to understand where the vibrant communities on Tumblr are. 

Improve our algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds. 

Principle 3: Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Part of Tumblr’s charm lies in its capacity to showcase the evolution of conversations and the clever remarks found within reblog chains and replies. Engaging in these discussions should be enjoyable and effortless.

Unfortunately, the current way that conversations work on Tumblr across replies and reblogs is confusing for new users. The limitations around engaging with individual reblogs, replies only applying to the original post, and the inability to easily follow threaded conversations make it difficult for users to join the conversation.

Address the confusion within replies and reblogs.

Improve the conversational posting features around replies and reblogs. 

Allow engagements on individual replies and reblogs.

Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread. 

Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads. 

Explore the feasibility of removing duplicate reblogs within a user’s Following feed. 

Principle 4: Retain and grow our creator base.

Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.  

Being a new creator on Tumblr can be intimidating, with a high likelihood of leaving or disappointment upon sharing creations without receiving engagement or feedback. We need to ensure that we have the expected creator tools and foster the rewarding feedback loops that keep creators around and enable them to thrive.

The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of helping new creators. To address this, we need to prioritize supporting and nurturing the growth of new creators on the platform.

It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. Whether it be an ask from the community or engagement on a post, being successful on Tumblr should never feel like a punishing experience.

Actions & Next Steps

Get creators’ new content in front of people who are interested in it. 

Improve the feedback loop for creators, incentivizing them to continue posting.

Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral.

Expand ways to co-create content, such as by adding the capability to embed Tumblr links in posts.

Principle 5: Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Push notifications and emails are essential tools to increase user engagement, improve user retention, and facilitate content discovery. Our strategy of reaching out to you, the user, should be well-coordinated across product, commercial, and marketing teams.

Our messaging strategy needs to be personalized and adapt to a user’s shifting interests. Our messages should keep users in the know on the latest activity in their community, as well as keeping Tumblr top of mind as the place to go for witty takes and remixes of the latest shows and real-life events.  

Most importantly, our messages should be thoughtful and should never come across as spammy.  

Actions & Next Steps

Conduct an audit of our messaging strategy.

Address the issue of notifications getting too noisy; throttle, collapse or mute notifications where necessary.  

Identify opportunities for personalization within our email messages. 

Test what the right daily push notification limit is. 

Send emails when a user has push notifications switched off.

Principle 6: Performance, stability and quality.

The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. If this continues, roughly one new unresolved production issue will be created every two days. Apps and backend systems that work well and don't crash are the foundation of a great Tumblr experience. Improving performance, stability, and quality will help us achieve sustainable operations for Tumblr.

Improve performance and stability: deliver crash-free, responsive, and fast-loading apps on Android, iOS, and web.

Improve quality: deliver the highest quality Tumblr experience to our users. 

Move faster: provide APIs and services to unblock core product initiatives and launch new features coming out of Labs.

“Democracy is when you promote immigration and transgenderism. The more you promote immigration and transgenderism, the more democratic you are.” -pseudonymous internet shitposter

The above came up as a commentary on the latest crock of shit that is Freedom House’s democracy rankings, where we are told that Hungary has left the group of democracies entirely. This is patent nonsense.

As best I can tell, Freedom House is stubbornly refusing to use a thesaurus or read any political science tract more complex than ‘DEMOCRACY GOOD’, because FH is using the word “democracy” as a catch-all for every good thing they like in a government or state, such as an independent judiciary. The lack of an independent judiciary, according to FH, is undemocratic. In their own words:

Antidemocratic leaders in the region continue to pay lip service to the skeletal, majoritarian element of democracy—claiming that they act according to the will of the people—but they do so only to justify their concentration of power and escalating violations of political rights and civil liberties.

The skeletal, majoritarian element of democracy. What a wonderfully evocative, emotive phrase. What a fascinating way to brush off the defining element of democracy.

Dear Freedom House - you don’t appear to have a tumblr, so I don’t know if you’ll read this, but it’s mostly my rant to the world at large and setting my own thoughts in order anyway - read another book, and get a bigger vocabulary. Hold a rectification of names. Practice using phrases like civil society, liberalism and constitutionalism, and learn about how they are distinct things from democracy. Stop using “democratic” to mean what you like, and “undemocratic” to mean what you don’t like, you God-damned emotivists. Cut the ridiculous hyperbole. Look at the Hungarian parliament, for example. Look at it, rather than trying to brush it away with colorful pejoratives.

There’s several more minor parties that didn’t make the cut to get a seat. This flourishing multiparty system with free elections, Freedom House calls undemocratic because the two-thirds majority governing coalition (orange + supporters) is getting its way and the very small minority parties are not getting their way. Freedom House puts it this way:

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government in Hungary has similarly dropped any pretense of respecting democratic institutions.

The supermajority ruling coalition IS THE DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTION, you midwits, that the other institutions ought to be the ones respecting!

Here is Freedom House’s seven-factor measure of good government, which they call a measure of “democracy”, probably because that’s the magic word which roots many people’s brains.

National Democratic Governance. Considers the democratic character of the governmental system; and the independence, effectiveness, and accountability of the legislative and executive branches.

Electoral Process. Examines national executive and legislative elections, the electoral framework, the functioning of multiparty systems, and popular participation in the political process.

Civil Society. Assesses the organizational capacity and financial sustainability of the civic sector; the legal and political environment in which it operates; the functioning of trade unions; interest group participation in the policy process; and the threat posed by antidemocratic extremist groups.

Independent Media. Examines the current state of press freedom, including libel laws, harassment of journalists, and editorial independence; the operation of a financially viable and independent private press; and the functioning of the public media.

Local Democratic Governance. Considers the decentralization of power; the responsibilities, election, and capacity of local governmental bodies; and the transparency and accountability of local authorities.

Judicial Framework and Independence. Assesses constitutional and human rights protections, judicial independence, the status of ethnic minority rights, guarantees of equality before the law, treatment of suspects and prisoners, and compliance with judicial decisions.

Corruption. Looks at public perceptions of corruption, the business interests of top policymakers, laws on financial disclosure and conflict of interest, and the efficacy of anticorruption initiatives.

Lots of things in that list that sound great, I’m sure. But if you haven’t been conditioned to reflexively cheer when you hear “democracy”, you might notice some odd things about this list.

For example, the points awarded for legislative independence, executive independence, press independence, and judicial independence. Without here getting into the reactionary weeds of whether or not these things ought to exist, can we at least recognize that there’s some double-counting going on here?

Moreover, the judicial independence in particular is smuggling in a very particular definition of democracy since it’s precisely the will of the people, the elected bodies and the [spongebob voice] ‘mAjoRITariaNISM’ that the judiciary is normally expected to be independent of. Again, “democracy” is being used as a catch-all applause-light.

Then there’s that bit about human rights protections, a loophole of vagueness wide enough to drive a tank through, as well as being a kind of definitional security hole where a country’s supposed democratic-ness can be altered without altering any trait of the country itself, only altering the benchmark. Hocus pocus, I added a new human right, your country is now less democratic because your people didn’t vote for it!

Libel laws are another standout element that have a lot to do with good governance, and little to do with “democracy”, where it is very easy to imagine the people getting dinged for undemocracy because they voted the wrong way.

Let’s go back to that point about press freedom and editorial independence for a moment. Meditate on it. Then consider Freedom House complaining out of the other side of its mouth later in the same report:

In Central and Eastern European countries, Chinese diplomats have been given free rein to publish misleading op-eds that push a pro-China narrative.

Here, let me put that in a larger context screenshot:

“Weak or nonexistent democratic institutions.” As if it weren’t bad enough for Fuckwit House to conflate democratic with free press, Fartsniff House then complains the free press is simultaneously undemocratic when the Chinese get a turn at it.

The quip at the top is probably inspired by this sentence from Freedom House’s report:

In the EU, member states’ failure to tackle rule-of-law violations inside the bloc has been coupled with a slow erosion of the rights of migrants and asylum seekers.

After shotgunning all of Parks and Rec in like a week and a half for the 2nd time not too long ago, I’ve come to the conclusion that my own preferences for Starco, SVTFOE, the fandom, and romantic fiction in general (or at least my SLIGHTLY self-caricatured Brand™ on display here on tumblr dot com fairly often) is basically “Ron Swanson but with Starco and fluffy/wholesome romance in general instead of manly libertarianism”. So I present to you the start of a new series of shitposts:

Also, hot take: Parks and Rec’s handling of Leslie, Ben, and Pawnee is INCREDIBLY similar in so many ways to SVTFOE (in terms of broad concepts if not every individual detail). Jake and Amy from B99 are probably closer to Star and Marco in terms of personality and exact relationship dynamic, but Ben and Leslie’s general role of growth/development/”plot” has the exact same spirit as Starco (also we shouldn’t ignore the fact that both of those couples have at least a full 1.5 seasons of steady relationship growth AND are together as a couple for many seasons afterwards, although it’s worth noting that Starco is far more central and gets more focus in SVTFOE than Ben/Leslie or Jake/Amy do in their shows).

 I It’s all so... weird and surreal. One last post to honor the tradition that really did keep me hooked on here for years. Something about those 5 years just ending. Having followed wicdiv almost from the beginning, I really feel attached to it and view it through a VERY personal lens of all the changes that happened during those years. From a depressed and passively suicidal 17yo in a highschool, to an almost graduated 22yo, trying to figure out it all with a bit more hope and a bit less of mental health issues. You know how as an urban activist I’m ideologically not a big fan of cars, but damn, that McKelvie design! Reminds me of prototypes of future cars I saw in the BMW musuem, kudos for capturing that futuristic tech feel.

Also goddamn McKelvie really popped off with all the older character designs? All those little details and shout-outs to their youger selves? Umar’s line about hospitals (and the picture from #16) seems to imply Cass passed away after some illness. Eleanor saying it’s unfair that she smoked and ‘got away’ with it and Cass being prepared she’d die soon kinda ties into that theory? Was it cancer or something else?

Also yeah re: that pic (and the invitation to Was It Cam Or Cass debate) - Umar has two hands, period. And like the fact that Umar literally quotes words Cam said moments before his death in Umar’s hospital room? Yeah, it’s really raining, lieutenant...

Delivering your own eulogy via a hologram is exactly this level of gay panache that Cass would embrace, I LOVE HER SO MUCH. Also being nice AF to literally everyone but in the snarkiest way possible? Also Cass focus on how everyone changed themself and tried to change the world, so the future people are born into a better one.

And yeah, same, I also didnt always want to be buried beneath a tree but now as I’m growing out of my old edgeperson ways? It sounds wonderful, I want to be an acorn even after death.

Also yeah, the final themes of growth that takes time, becoming better and finding hope... they resonate with me now, as I also feel like I’ve been through hell for 2 (or actually more, i think) years. But you know, rip to that old me but im different (now). Thank you Kieron for luring me into a flashy colorful YA, then a messed up and depressive story, and then climbing up the walls of hell back when I did. It was not always going to be okay, but then it was okay.

And yes, to the whole fandom, fandom that let me find so many friends all over the world and grow up as a person and have so much fun with our stupid puns and shitposts: I love you. I’ll miss you. (but honestly, still feel free to HMU etc, its not like we actually die. We just lost a source of monthly engagement, thats it. Im just a dramatic lil shit too)

Tumbling in 2020

Well, Tumblr, I’ve been here since . . . 2011.  (Yikes.)  I don’t think I’m going anywhere very soon, especially now that we have somewhat more benevolent overlords.  I did try Twitter this year, which is good for the sporadic shitpost, but it doesn’t have quite the same wallowing in the decadent mudpit qualities.  There’s a certain je ne sais quoi to Tumblr that we’ve all chose to be in here together.

This was a year I haven’t been particularly active--  and I do regret that a bit.  I’ve gone cruising through several different fandoms in lurker mode.   And then I pass through out the other side with no souvenirs to show for it, which is vaguely disappointing.  I would like to try and do better about embracing in-the-moment-ness for 2020- and being braver about posting tidbits of whatever the hell I am writing regardless of what it is.

I most miss doing prompt fills, weirdly enough?  But without centralized places to post prompts/responses like memes, I don’t really know how to go about that.  Hn.

At any rate, goals for 2020: - Actually use my own dang blog - Write and post said writing more - Try not to care about what other people think when they chose to be here too

Oof, sorry for the mess that's my blog tonight. I mean, I know this dump can be shitpost central, but this was bad even for me. Not that I wouldn't reblog the same pro choice and pro sex ed posts a hundred times over, just maybe not on the same evening. A thank you is in order to the 2 of you who notified me!

We had a serious power outage here and it fried my old, yet good, router that's hooked up to the new, yet shit, modem from the shit service provider and now doing anything that requires a wifi connection is trying to say the least. So when ol' tumblr kept telling me the post wouldn't post I just kept hitting that 'retry' button like the determined fucker I am.

If the router I ordered doesn't come in tomorrow, or if I'm too wrecked after work to set it up, I'm gonna grab the LAN cable that's in some crate in the box downstairs and jack its plug straight into the base of my skull. No joke.
