reading dungeon meshi
#random thoughts#it has the kind of plot i hate where you retread the same plot point repeatedly while making progress elsewhere#like hi falin bye falin#like i cared about them finding falin. then they found her. and now she's gone again.#i don't like marcille but in like. a compelling way. she's my favorite archetype of character who is specifically female for some reason?#lady who thinks her way is the right way and she's morally right and therefore everyone else is wrong#high conscientiousness with low openness to experience. see themselves as agreeable dutiful and restrained while not being any of that#they tend to take on moralistic causes but they usually don't have a defined reason for WHY they're doing it so it just comes off as preachy#and the narrative tends to take their side with no basis in why#like when marcille tried to prove herself with the mandrakes and put everyone in danger and senshi conceded he was ALSO in the wrong???#and even marcille was like 'that wasn't my point at all'#that entire chapter made me mad it was so good#it's also doing that thing i hate when a piece of media introduces too many characters at once#like who's who what's what who is important who should i remember#i love the detail put into the cooking sessions!!!#i love how all the characters are so fucked up and not even in plot-important ways#like chilchuck's cowardice is very important to the plot but senshi was straight-up willing to let a man die for his flavorful cooking lmao#laios is. my man. i need him carnally.#i get that the whole 'got eaten by dragon' thing was not meant to be the Whole Plot but i feel like the background plot is just not my thing#either that or it wasn't set up in a compelling enough way?#idk. im still reading#all in all i think dungeon meshi might just not be my thing? plot-wise i mean. i love the characters and the general premise#of monster biology and environmentalism and cooking and augh#i don't like how everytime senshi corrects marcille on something so far he ends up going 'i guess i also need to learn a thing or two'#like on the mandrakes? the man has FIELD EXPERIENCE he was entirely in the right to prefer his method!!!#and on the environment thing? first of all marcille's whole thing is building artificial dungeons she SHOULD care about the food chain#SECOND OF ALL telling marcille she shouldn't kill so many fishmen isn't playing GOD or whatever#that kraken was a fucking. extenuating circumstance. it was literally there just to make marcille's argument credible#animals killing each other through the food chain is different from marcille using what is essentially a rocket launcher#god i ran out of tags. peace and luv bruvs 🤟 kind of have a hate crush on marcille now. need her

OCT 3 - RHETORIC
Practice the art of persuasion. Enjoy rigorous intellectual discourse.
ahhh Rhetoric. I hated him in my first playthrough. I became a true blue moralist in my attempts to stay away from the politics he was constantly spewing. And ended up realizing Moralism was just as extreme as the other options. Now I'm very fond of him.
He's also very fun to draw with 4 arms!! (and he's not the only skill I've given 4 arms to, these poor guys) No WIPs in this one, but i can share if anyone wants to see haha.
As usual, lots of dialogue and musings under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This exactly, is why I hated Rhetoric at first. It was all I could see in him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
echem vs rhetoric!
Tumblr media
lol
Tumblr media
Perception repeatedly telling you that they can't smell communists never stops being funny to be.
Tumblr media
I know it's Rhetoric day but Volition ily. He's the lone supporter of building communism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ty rhetoric, dispelling these myths
Tumblr media
inexplicable feminist rhetoric is my best friend. He doesn't care what it is, if Harry wants to stand for it rhetoric is ON BOARD. I do find it a little off-putting... but that's okay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second one is re. communism if you're a moralist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the rhetoric fail against Titus is so painful. it's not as bad as the authority fail, but...
all of these damage morale too! gotta love how you get scolded for going off script if you choose anything but the fiddle option... and your delivery sucked if you do choose it. thanks rhetoric
Tumblr media
aw :(
Tumblr media
The highest rhetoric check! difficulty 18 (Impossible)
Tumblr media
he backs down so easy sometimes, and it's completely random when it will be
Tumblr media
listen to your stomach harry
Tumblr media
If your rhetoric is high enough, he knows some German! his translation isn't quite right, I'm pretty sure. it seems to be a pale radiation incident...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my, admittedly limited, search I actually found no reference to Rhetoric advising you to say any of these things. Harry comes up with this shit all on his own!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
he just wants you to share your opinion...
also Rhetoric's nickname! He's called Goldmouth (or Gold Mouth) by Volition (x2) and Empathy, and Golden Mouth Man by Harry and Drama. From what I can tell, the name doesn't seem to have much meaning outside DE. But there is this mention in the Innocences book...
Tumblr media
Perhaps it's a nickname Rhetoric gave to himself pre-Martinaise that has stuck, based off the Perikarnassian innocence? It's fun to think about.
Going to leave it there. There's a lot of other really good Rhetoric with Other Skills dialogue, but I put a lot of it in a previous post and don't want to repeat it, so it's been left out. If you read this far... you're crazy haha.

In Defense of Shinji/Rei
Tumblr media
Out of all the pairings in the Evangelion fandom, Shinji/Rei is one of the most controversial and least popular, especially here on tumblr. It did have some popularity at one point but that has died down in favor of Kawoshin and Asurei. It’s a ship that I, and many others, feel is often mischaracterized and dismissed due to its more controversial elements but one that is honestly very emotional and deserves less hate in my opinion, as do it’s shippers who people also have a misguided view of. Fandom in general has become more moralistic and puritanical in recent years. It’s like no one learned a thing from the SU fandom discourse where people were bullied or called homophobic for liking a certain pairing over the other.
Argument 1: she’s his mother/sister
The most common criticism of the pairing is that it’s incest and that their relationship is that of a brother-sister or mother-son. First, Rei’s whole arc in the show is that she’s not just a clone or copy of Yui or Lilith. She’s her own person with her own desires which is why her loyalty to Gendo wanes as she becomes more of an individual. Her DNA also isn’t that similar to Shinji and only a small amount of Yui’s was used. The rest was affected by Lilith hence the differences in their appearance. So there is a little bit of blood relation but it’s not on the same level of say Bwen or Pinecest. Incest is terrible because it’s a betrayal of family trust and abuse but Shinji and Rei met as teens and were not raised as siblings, nor did he know of her origin until Ritsuko explained it.
I’ve also seen the argument that their bond is sibling-like or Shinji views her as a Madonna/mother figure. Anno has stated that he intended there to be a “love triangle” with the pilot trio and show’s proposal described Rei as having “learned about feelings when she fell in love”. While that info comes from Reddit and may not be reliable, it does challenge the idea that there was no intention for their dynamic to be romantic.
Next, antis really take that elevator scene out of context where Shinji was complimenting her on being like a mom while ignoring him telling her she’d make a good housewife. The rebuilds and manga make their connection more blatant but it was always there. Misato, Toji and Kensuke all tease Shinji about his crush and the two act as friends after warming up despite their icy first interactions. There may be some maternal aspects to it but it’s rather simplistic to dumb their bond down to a family connection. It seems antis argue that they’re siblings because the romantic implications are uncomfortable and antis don’t want to admit that they do have feelings for each other.
Tumblr media
Argument 2: it’s misogynistic and queer erasure
Okay, this is a less common argument against it but one I’ve seen from popular Eva analysis writers that view Kawoshin as the only valid pairing for Shinji. I’ve seen it used against Asushin and Marishin too. This goes hand and hand with the idea that Shinji views Rei as a Madonna and is misogynistic. I have a lot of thoughts about the “Shinji is an incel misogynist and Asuka did nothing wrong” discourse but that’s for another day. He’s not a perfect uwu soft boy but fans seem to base his entire characterization off the hospital scene in rather single issue Eva analyses that cherry-pick certain scenes or dialogue.
The argument that it’s queer erasure is one I’m starting to despise. Yes, there are homophobic dudebro fans who hate Kawoshin but not everyone who prefers a “straight” pairing is anti gay. Shinji could still be bisexual and be in a m/f relationship. I’ve also seen some ship him in a polycule with Rei and Kaworu. Plus, not everyone has to interpret the show or character the same way. The writers made it so people can view Kawoshin as romantic and Shinji as queer, but never demanded that be the only possible interpretation.
This kind reminds me of something I’ve occasionally seen in the Ben 10 fandom too. A few fans, not all of them, treating the wholesome gay ship as the only good pairing because of the problematic elements in the m/f ships or because they view the male protagonist as a misogynist. The “male character is sexist or a bad boyfriend so let’s make him gay” is also a fandom trope that kind of irritates me. Not every ship has be gay or a girlboss romance either.
Argument 3: they’re kids and you can’t ship them
This is one of the least common criticisms but one that I’ve occasionally encountered. First, they’re 14 which is around the time a lot of teens start dating. Second, romance =/= sex and child/teen characters can have romantic feelings for each other. Yes, ship wars over fictional kids can escalate but there’s nothing wrong with just liking a pairing. This post about Chihiro and Haku’s bond from Spirited Away kind of applies here too.
My thoughts: why do I love this pairing?
I first fell in love with this ship because I watched the rebuilds first on Amazon Prime and didn’t know the series was on Netflix because my account, embarrassingly, still has parental controls on it. I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea but I liked them. Shinji was a character I really connected to and so was Rei. Their relationship got me a bit emotional and the scene where Shinji attempts to save her had me on the edge of my seat, while the scene where Shinji accepts Rei Q got a tear out of me as did the apology scene in 3.0+1.0.
If I had to compare them to any other pairing, which I’ve done before, it would be Hodaka/Hina from Weathering with You which also is a bit divisive and a bit of a tearjerker. Ironically, EoE is one of Makoto Shinkai’s favorites and he considers Anno an inspiration. Everything from their bond to Hodaka’s character and Hina’s arc of a blue haired girl, blackish-blue in Hina’s case, that’s lived a difficult life and who’s only purpose is to be a sacrificial lamb, learning to pray for herself is a lot like Shinji/Rei, down the ending of WWY being a lot like that of 2.22. The scene where Hodaka gives Hina a promise ring is also a little like the “smile” moment from Episode 6/1.11.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
In short, Shinji/Rei isn’t a bad pairing and is overhated and misrepresented by many in the fandom. It’s fine to dislike it or prefer another ship but one can do so without chomping at the bit to paint its shippers as homophobes, misogynists or people with incest fetishes or Oedipal complexes. Many of us like it because it’s one of the least toxic relationships in the series and is honestly a very powerful story. Are there some questionable elements in it? Sure, but you can like a ship even if it’s not up to golden moral standards and expecting every pairing to be unproblematic is ridiculous. Real life is much more grey than what moralistic fans claim.

(inspired by that post you were talking about + other comments I’ve noticed around recently) I think it’s funny how people will conflate the word “abuse” with “assault” to make Jason look extra bad (he did not abuse Mia or Tim. He is not in an intimate relationship with them. He’s an enemy that attacked them, these are superhero comics you would not call Two Face Dick’s “abuser” be serious for one moment), but when it comes to situations where there is a relationship with an ingrained power imbalance (Bruce and his children for example), nobody knows how to use the word “abuse” anymore
People can't simply say they dislike a character because they don't vibe with them and that's it anymore. I just can't get behind that, personally. (But then again, for me, the worst sin a character can "committ" is being boring and uninteresting...)
Everything has to be dressed up in therapy speak and words that don't mean exactly what people think they mean... such as abuse, like you said, which would imply a power imbalance which does not exist between Jason and Mia or Jason and Tim (of course, though, if you want to write an *AU* where he gets into a relationship with either of those characters (or any other character), and abuses them due to the dynamic you're going to develop, I say go for it, you do you.)
Although *personally* I think it's kinda a bit out there to put Jason in the role of an abuser, tbh... he doesn't really have that kind of power over anyone (arguably he has over Bruce, but does he really? I think you could write him that way in fic and it would be reasonable depending on how you write it, because Bruce is (very) susceptible to some kinds of moralistic manipulation, but in canon, of course, we only see the opposite where the dynamic of Jason and Bruce is concerned (or Bruce any of the other "batkids").
The damage to fandom's perception of Jason simply because in a lot of his official art he looks like a forty year old is so bad (though I don't particularly think he looked that old in the GA issues in particular, from what I remember). (Or because he's ugly too, let's not forget that DC (well, actually, not exclusive to DC by any means) is always pushing the ugliness = evilness thing. And like, Jason is so ugly in a lot of his comics, including UTH).
And the damage that Teen Titans Vol 3 29 caused for the experience of being a Jason fan is... [redacted]
Also, let me take the opportunity to say that I don't think either of those situations were OOC for Jason. I mean, not that I've heard that many opinions that the GA issues were OOC for him, but I definitely have seen a lot of "Titans Tower was OOC, Jason would never." (that difference is, of course, due to the fact that a lot more people care about Tim Drake than about Mia Dearden, because both situations are quite similar).
*CANON* Titans Tower, as it happened (i.e. Jason beat Tim, skill issue, Tim was sassing Jason *while* being beaten) was not OOC.
Going back to the "abuse" thing, and also to the age-difference that people love to stretch - Jason was treating both Mia and Tim as equals when going after them like that... there wasn't in any way a vibe of "going after kids because they are easy" (and of course, if we analyse these events from the standpoint of Jason having been dead + catatonic for a long period, in the meta we could propose that that sort of idea would've never even crossed his mind).
*ALSO* you do you, and you write anything you want in fanfic. Believe me, I'm not a stickler to canon in the fanfic I read/write in most fandoms I'm in (and even if I were, the "you write whatever you want" still stands). And fandom is fandom, so of course a thing like Teen Titans Vol 3 29 would be explored to hell and back in fanfic. I just complain a lot about it because, mind you, I nowadays filter out Tim's character tag (unless I'm in the mood to maybe look for a Jaytim fic that I can read, since, on average, the Tim/Jason fics are better characterized than Tim & Jason ones), and I still get sooooo many fics where Jason is angsting about "the horrors he committed" there. I guess that made me bitter. But oh well... it is what it is.
Thank you for the ask! And sorry for derailing lol

Sorry I keep getting weirdly moralistic in the Hazbin Hotel fandom of all things, but I'm having Staticmoth thoughts again and need to get them out-
We don't know a lot about their dynamic, so I think it's fine to assume Vox is horrible to Val in other ways, but can we PLEASE acknowledge that nothing Vox does to Val in *specifically* their interactions during Radio Killed the Video Star is actual abuse? Like can we???
All of the yelling and manhandling in that scene is initiated by Valentino. He's the one that starts the interaction by screaming at Vox. He's the one that throws a glass at Vox's presumably very fragile head. He's the one that breaks Vox's phone. Vox doesn't start yelling until Val starts taking things too far and literally threatens to shoot up the hotel. After Vox successfully calms Val down, Val turns around and immediately starts manipulating(?) him into fighting Alastor(It's really lowkey and Vox probably would've done it anyway but I still think the way Val behaves in this scene is fishy asf). And while Vox is very nonchalant about most of the physical violence Val throws at him, I'd argue that kind of makes it kind of worse? Because it implies this shit happens regularly enough that he just. Puts up with it. Which isn't good.
Anything Vox does in that scene that could be considered abusive is a reaction to all the shit Val already did. Yelling at and manhandling somebody who's been throwing a violent tantrum at you for several minutes isn't. Bad. It's not a bad thing to do. Especially when there's no other way to get them to stop and the stakes are as urgent as "this guy is going to go shoot up a fucking building"(note Vox is absolutely not concerned about this for the right reasons, he only cares about his image, but to him that's still pretty damn important). Reactive abuse isn't abuse, if somebody fights back against their shitty partner they are not just as bad as them(Vox is still terrible in other ways but this post isn't about that). Using this scene to prove Vox is just as bad as Val has really bad implications. There are other scenes and bits of context clues you can use, I'm not trying to invalidate any larger arguments here, and I'm not trying to fucking. Accuse anyone of being a bad person. All I'm saying is to please, for the love of god, stop using this scene as proof Staticmoth is mutually toxic, because it is well and truly Not Proof Of That.

I was trolling mr overwatch url. After seeing how after pedojacketing a trans woman instead of deleting and either keeping quiet or mumbling out a half-hearted apology, he decided to double and triple down, making himself look worse and worse, I realized he was very easy to troll.
I was making a genuine point about his hypocrisy, but also poking the self-described bear to see how he would respond. And respond he did. A smarter man would have just blocked and ignored me, realized i was goading him, but he just kept justifying himself, incriminating himself in the process
(he never answered my original accusation that he thinks it's okay to tell writers of incest fics to kill themselves, probably because it's true. He said he finally blocked me in his last reply, but I think he might be mistaken, probably confusing me for another trans woman he blocked?)
He is a true crank , in the sense of a writer for the journal Nature defined it in 1906: "A crank is defined as a man who cannot be turned." Once challenged, he will just keep digging.
Of course, he will walk away from all this unscathed. TME people accused of transmisogyny always do. He walked way from his previous transmisognyistic harassment campaign unscathed too. That is why what I did wasn't actually callout culture, I can't have that power. Our society doesn't listen to transfems criticizing transmisogyny, it does however listen to tme people painting transfems as dangerous predatory sex perverts.
He is a self-righteous moralist and when criticized by the degenerate transfems he despises, he feels the need to ardently defend his honor, never admitting fault at all. I think he is sincere in his moralistic anti-kink outrage about incest fanfic or whatever, but like all those he naturally hates trans women. Being disgusted by fetishes and weird sex and hating perverts, leads naturally to hating trans women, we are fetishized and sexualized and painted as disgusting perverts.

In regards to your post “and now I'm. Just thinking about the loneliness that is SO pervasive through Elysium.”…
I have one thing to offer, or perhaps nitpick if you’d prefer it that way.
I don’t think it’s entirely fair to say the Sunday Friend isn’t a real friend. The Smoker On The Balcony believes him to be a real friend, even if he isn’t going to be there come Monday morn. But isn’t that enough? A friend on Sunday is still a friend, even if it makes waking up Monday all the worse.
Perhaps I’m biased though! Now that I think about it, most of my friends would fit the description. “Fair weather friend” feels to cold, but “sunday friend” is good enough.
And of course none of this is to say your post is at all wrong. It’s lovely and true. I just felt the need to quarrel publicly with that little detail.
To conclude, since I really just did not make myself very clear here; you are utterly correct to include the Sunday Friend in a post about loneliness but I take slight issue with saying he’s not a real friend. And so I wrote you a very long ask. And now as I reach it’s end I’m realising this was a very silly undertaking. But I’ve come this far so I’m going to grow a pair and hit “ask”.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope it isn’t too desperately obnoxious.
Peace out ✌️
Ahh man I'm sorry anon but I'm going to have to disagree with you pretty strongly here 😅 tbh I was a little too easy on him in the original post. It's not necessarily the temporary nature of their acquaintance that makes the Sunday Friend's friendship questionable on its own, although it doesn't help.
The Sunday Friend is quite literally not a friend. "Friend" in his title is a euphemism; he's not coming to visit the Smoker because he's his friend. He's coming to visit the smoker to do a bit of poverty tourism, to admire the crumbling place that his beliefs have helped to destroy, and a bit of heavily implied sex tourism too. A "first world" tourist, a bureaucrat from the international government, visiting one of the most impoverished districts of Revachol to spend his nights with a student. He's not the Smoker's friend, he's a client. They're using 'friend' as a stand-in for his actual role, which is a) as a part of the moralist bureaucratic system repressing the revolution and keeping the city as a whole trapped in a laissez faire purgatory easily exploited by foreign capitalists and ultraliberals, while still maintaining a friendly respectable face, and b) as the Smoker's customer, exploiting the poverty of Martinaise's residents to get what he wants for cheap and using the easy mobility that his money and status give him. Imo he's intended narratively as a parallel for the moralist coalition government; he views from a distance, focused on money and *ze price stabilité* but entirely divorced from the poverty and consequence of his work. Happy to dip his toe in and make use of exploitable populations in Revachol, but always ready to leave too. When asked how he became 'friends' with the smoker, his response is literally to describe the coalition occupying Revachol.
Tumblr media
He knows so little about the Smoker beyond him being there to study art, but what kind? "Perhaps graphic design? Printmaking? Who knows?" As to your point about the Smoker thinking he's a real friend, the Smoker is under no illusions about who the Sunday Friend is. An injection of money. Someone with power, someone with the mobility afforded to him by ownership of a non-Revacholian passport, someone content to watch the place decay and do nothing but indulge himself in pet projects and worry about bureaucracy. Someone with the freedom to leave when things get bad; a freedom that is narratively only assigned to a rare few extremely bourgeois characters. Dora, on her flight to Mirova, Joyce and her boat, Trant and his academic travels, and the Sunday Friend who will be out of Martinaise like a shot the moment things start to kick off despite being a part of the overarching structure that is responsible for Revachol's subjugation and rising political tensions. The Sunday Friend will use the Smoker's labour, use the vulnerability of Revachol's precarious situation to his advantage, then once it becomes too precarious or he gets bored, he'll withdraw. In answer to your question, no, I don't think that's enough. Again I probably oversimplified in my last post but the loneliness all throughout DE is not just an emotional state but a political one. Alienation is a major theme. As is the impossibility of building community in the face of capitalism relentlessly subsuming anything in its path, in the face of shallow relationships dictated by the need for survival. The Sunday Friend embodies that concept perfectly. He is exquisitely shallow in conversation, a perfect moralist who at all times strives to remain impartial and distant.
Tumblr media
Anyway. Tldr; my point is that the relationship between the Smoker and the Sunday Friend is far more transactional, and far more exploitative, than you seem to believe. "Friend" is not being used literally but euphemistically. A 'fairweather friend' is better than none, sure, but that's entirely inapplicable to this situation. Sorry for the long post and I hope it's not too rambling- I'm surviving on very little sleep right now but I hope it clears up for you a bit why I referred to the Sunday friend in that way initially.

love how so much of this arc's been invoking the theme of the dead lover & simultaneously problematising patriarchal control. both quanxi & eyepatch [i'm sure the accessory too is a deliberate similarity] operate on this basis.
but while quanxi is mute/almost awfully silent about this fact, eyepatch nigh constantly yaps about his wife -- forms her concept as a justification for his actions. it reminds me of how, on the church side, barem talks about makima & uses her to convey what he does to denji. i think viewing eyepatch from the angle of the affair (still enmeshed within his self justifying, moralistic pov) perhaps even set against quanxi's multiple partners whom she treats well & mourns v differently from how he does is intriguing.
he dies as cannibalised by the idea'd version of her [considering the CSM as a bestowal of concept], very similar to how he treats her. quanxi meanwhile while constrained by their deaths / their bodies [idea'd remnants] gives this up also in the face of the CSM.
there's sth v. interesting to consider here alongside how palpably misogynist/queerphobic many of the remarks in this arc have been (katana's character located within the yakuza's patriarchy throwing a slur at nail, asayoru being referred to as csm's woman, denji as her bf).. it's imo quite significant to the playground part 2 is working within -- where asaden's respective protagonisms conform & respond to gendered expectations & where their relationship too is built upon at many levels fleeting connection & <parasocial> idealisation on kiga's stage.

A talk about proshippers.
(A text about why i dont support proshippers, if you are one, or feel neutral about them, please dont interact with my account, thank you.)
(Theres no need to attack me because of the proshipper tag, i didnt attack anyone.)
⚠️ [TW: mentions of S/A, abuse, suicide,and pedo.] ⚠️ -----------------------------------------
For those who arent familiar with the term, proshippers is a abbreviation of "problematic shippers" and it stands for someone who likes or promotes problematic relationships, such as a minor and a adult, saying that the content is fiction and they do not support it in real life, other terms such as "darkshippers" "comshippers" basically mean the same thing, and many people that indulge in the consumption of these problematic media sometimes use emoji combos to identify eachother on the internet.
Now, where exactly is the problem with it, since they don't support it in real life?
Well, for starters, let me pick one problematic media as a example to set what type of content im talking about.
"Diabolik Lovers" will be my example.
I always loved the dark, """forbidden""" vibe that whole shit had. But something always bothered me, the way there was no consent in this situation made me not be able to like and appreciate the atmosphere because of the brutal and bad situation Yui was going through with no actual type of consent from her, made me furious.
What irritates me is the way the vampires treat her and don't ask anything, this falls to a different audience and ends up romanticizing the lack of consent because it's "just fiction" and this happens a lot with older women or teenagers who come into contact with problematic works like 50 shades of gray, after, 365 days, etc. This also has a lot to do with the sexualization that the world has done of "yanderes" and "no consent" in films or fanfics. The idea of exploring this somewhat non-moralistic side of society has been around since the beginning, of seeing or doing things considered problematic, with analogies such as the story of Adam and Eve itself, which occurs a lot in Diabolik Lovers and which even rubbed off on me a little, but this idea is not new, and even today fiction is seen as a place where there is no morality, something that ended up being in the minds of many young people, and was EXTREMELY sexualized.
The amount of "non-con" or "dub-con" fics there are on the internet is honestly disgusting, and even these romanticized terms were created for these stories that contain rape, an example of this comes from the book Kamasutra itself, where punches, slaps and pinches were forms of affection, and women were encouraged to pretend they didn't like what was happening because men liked this dominant relationship, this idea of forbidden things and even the sexualization of words like "baby" and " daddy" can also curiously come from this book along with many other works, where the man was encouraged to have an even parental stance towards the woman he loves, the thing is that to this day, the romanticization of the lack of consent occurs too much, and is seen as desired by several women and men, and for me at least all of this has a very strict limit.
Having problematic ideas happens, and it's normal, the thing is to understand that it's wrong, because the idea of human curiosity happens, and you just have to study and repress what you know is wrong.
Interesting, right? We've had this since the world has been around, and that's why even though I understand the train of "fiction" thoughts of proshippers, I don't think this is a healthy practice because in the indulgence of these games of "playing too much with the forbidden" and of course, poking a little won't kill you, but this idea of "forbidden" may very well eventually soften your morals.
The amount of times that i've heard that danganronpa will take away my notion of what's wrong and how problematic murder is, happened more times than i can count, but what about the media and stuff like that? Why so much silence?
Keep in mind that i don't support de dehumanization of proshippers, including suicide bait or threats, just block them and move on, don't do to others what you don't want it done to yourself.
-------------------------------------------------------
TLDR: The text discusses the discomfort with the lack of consent in romantically problematic works, which romanticize non-consensual situations. It criticizes how media often normalizes or sexualizes these problematic themes, particularly affecting women and teenagers. The text emphasizes that while curiosity about taboo topics is natural, it's important to recognize and understand the wrongness of these ideas to avoid moral degradation, thus being the motive that the author doesn't support any form of "proship".

Rewiew: The Amulet & The Anthem.
I confess that the lesson she needed to learn was important. However, the idea for the episode was not so well executed.
And you know that roulette of drawn names who would sing the Enchancia anthem? FRAUD! FRAUDED FOR SURE!
The guy who chose the name? He seemed very suspicious to me, not malicious in particular, but something tells me he already knew that the princess would be chosen...
( For some reason he reminded me of Sarousch from the second Hunchback of Notre Dame film? I don't know why, I think it's because he's a presenter, and he was very excited about having Princess Sofia perform at the festival. Trying to impress her with all the things she would receive if she sang. I don't know, his insistence seemed very suspicious to me. Like when a salesperson gives you a lot of compliments to make you buy a product from the store, that vibe.)
Don't you think that's too much of a coincidence that they chose the king's new stepdaughter, who was a commoner, to sing the Enchancia anthem in public?
It could have been for good, or for bad.
If someone had done it with good intentions, they would be trying to show how far a little peasant girl has come in life.
A simple peasant girl who became a princess, singing the anthem of the kingdom in which she was born and which now stands next to the throne, would show that Enchancia really is the kingdom where dreams come true.
So making her sing the anthem would be something very symbolic, encouraging unity and hope among the people of Enchancia.
If someone had done this with bad intentions, it would have been to cause some embarrassment to Princess Sofia. Or, even prove that Princess Sofia would become a "diva" like her stepsister, the moment she was at the center of the stage.
Even more so, with the number of portrait painters and interviewers around the princess. If she got angry, if she seemed spoiled, or anything less acceptable coming from a new princess, they would definitely end up reporting it.
Maybe this was actually a test for Sofia. Even coming from her own parents, to test whether his behavior would change if she received more attention.
Only instead of the accidental and sudden attention she received from being part of a new family, which would naturally make her very nervous and insecure. It would now be an intentional attention, for something she would have agreed to do on her own merit.
Honestly, I don't think Sofia was so rude to be cursed. If she had acted like James at the picnic of the three kingdoms, then I would agree that she messed up.
She was just excited to do something cool, she was going to sing her kingdom's anthem for her own people at a festival.
If you think that's bragging, then you certainly live with the most humble and sensible people in the world. Because that wasn't even close to being something arrogant, not even annoying enough I would say.
I think there's a reason: certainly the parents of the children who watched the show wanted it to be more "moralistic" to teach children better.
But an empty moral lesson is even worse than no morals at all. Because it discredits the morals themselves!
If you teach that morals are unfair and that's the way it is, children will be even less willing to follow them.
Who would enjoy playing a game if you find out that the rules are unfair? Nobody!
The same happens with empty morals.
I found it very funny how Cedric had almost no shame on his face of just turning the pages of the book in Sofia's face, and saying that he "looked" and couldn't find any spell to help her. She's not a fool Cedric, she's just innocent and has a good enough heart so as not to snitch his ill will to the king.
Even more so, him pretending that he was "worried" about her curse, and with a huge smile when he saw that she still hadn't broken the curse.

Bengiyo's Queer Cinema Syllabus
A few months back I was chatting with @bengiyo when the subject of queer cinema came up (unsurprising considering…ya know, the whole being BL buddies thing). As a semi-recent queerness realizer, and a Certified Baby Gay(™), Ben took it upon himself to share a post between himself and @shortpplfedup that inspired @the-conversation-pod and which also included a Completely Hypothetical Queer Cinema Syllabus Build Up to BL for Baby Gays. According to @bengiyo this started as a thought experiment.
But, unfortunately or…fortunately? for him, I constantly crave queer media, and @waitmyturtles and her Old GMMTV Challenge have inspired me to try my hand at working my way through this syllabus. I cannot guarantee that I will finish all these films. I have no idea how long it would even take, but I wanted to at least try!
I have been saying I would do this for months now, but I am inundated with BL content, and getting more every day, so I have been pushing it to the side. BUT! This evening a local movie theater played The Birdcage (1996) and I went and bought tickets and decided now was as good a time as any to get this started, I am hoping to take a page out of Turtle’s book and write notes/thoughts on the movies I end up watching. Forgive me the long winded introduction, but I figured some context would be nice if this ends up being a thing I stick with. So without further ado…
The Birdcage (1996) [Comedy]
Syllabus Unit 6: Gems
Tumblr media
Summary: A gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée's right-wing moralistic parents.
Characters:  Armand: Gay cabaret owner, played by Robin Williams  Arnold: Drag queen partner, played by Nathan Lane Val: Armand’s son, played by Dan Futterman Agador: Armand and Arnold's maid? friend? live in slutty pool boy? played by Hank Azaria Katharine: Val's biological mother, played by Christine Baranski
Overall Reflection
This is a film I had never seen before. Hell, I didn’t even know it existed until around the time Ben shared his syllabus, and someone reblogged a scene from it that ended up on my dashboard. This was an interesting film to experience in theaters, because while watching with an audience made the funny bits funnier, there were also moments that I absolutely did not read as funny that other people did, and I didn’t know how I felt about that.
This film is set primarily in South Beach, Florida and partly in a drag club, which meant that the only thing I could think about whenever the drag club was on screen was Palace, the gay bar, drag brunch, queer club spot in Miami. On the other funny casual note, as a Floridian I feel seen by the moment where Katharine calls and says she’s going to be late, and it zooms out to show she is stuck at the bridge. Real.
I feel like the majority of gay media I have consumed in my life very much centers around two very masculine characters. So it was really nice to watch a story that involved more femme characters, and that the femme characters were not left as the butt of the joke. Which I recognize might be ironic considering this is a comedy and therefore there are jokes abound. But, when you compare the femme character in something like Legally Blonde, to the femme characters here, they are allowed to be dramatic, and they are allowed to trip and fall, but the love that Armand has for Arnold is palpable, they squabble and they get annoyed at each other, and they hurt each other, but they are partners, and they love each other too, and it shows throughout the film.
This sounds fucked up, I guess, but I love the undercurrent of pain that is threaded throughout the story. The way that Val starts off seeming like he is very content with the way he grew up, the parents that he had. The way that Val feels so so loved by his Dads, and he hurts them anyway. Because he is scared, because he loves Barbara and he knows that she is good, and that her parents aren’t, and that he has to hide his family. But in making them hide who they are, he is hurting them and at first you can see and feel the ways that Armand is trying to rebel against it. You can tell that initially he is angry, disappointed, upset, incredulous:
“Yes, I wear foundation. Yes, I live with a man. Yes, I'm a middle- aged fag. But I know who I am, Val. It took me twenty years to get here, and I'm not gonna let some idiot senator destroy that. Fuck the senator, I don't give a damn what he thinks.”

It is one of my favorite lines in the film. Because Val needs to be called out on exactly what he is asking his father to do for him. Because Armand's pain is visceral in this moment. But Armand loves his son and so eventually he relents.
Arnold’s presence and importance in Val’s life are constantly disregarded and he is allowed to be upset, and Armand is allowed to constantly put his son’s engagement and wedding in jeopardy to prioritize his partner and his partner’s feelings, because Arnold is a part of this family, and to hide him away is unfair.
I certainly had to grapple with some complicated emotions around the character of Val. I could understand where he was coming from, that he loves his fiancee and that their families have to meet, and that it is almost certainly physically safer for everyone if his parents are not visibly and obviously queer around the ultra conservative moralist senator. But the ways he ends up exhibiting casual disdain, anxiety, and judgment around the aspects of his parents’ home, his parents’ friends, his parents’ themselves makes me kinda hate him a little bit. It is hard for me not to see Val as entitled, not to consider him low-key dickish, because of how frequently he seems to get annoyed and disappointed that Armand and Arnold are not acting straight enough, that their house isn’t straight enough, that their family isn’t straight enough. But the film does not shy away from the mental toll it takes.
Were there aspects of the film itself I didn’t like? Honestly, not really. There are some jokes and terminology that do not fully stand the test of time, so if I watch it with a modern lens I think I would give it a 9.5. If I watch it in the context of the time it was written, I would probably give it a 9.8. But watching it in theaters certainly altered the way I engaged in certain scenes.
Mostly with the “I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking dressed like this, I’m even more obvious” scene.
Tumblr media

Because people in the theater were laughing during this moment. Which is not to say I am judging them, I’m not mad at them for finding the moments leading up to that scene funny. I can understand how Arnold constantly having to catch himself and change his body language could come off as funny. But there is a weight to that scene for me that made the laughter feel incongruous. It is, in my opinion, an incredibly impactful scene. And it was hard for me to fully embrace that moment the way I know I would have if I was alone, after I realized that not everyone reads that scene as a serious one.
(Side Note: When I was looking for pictures of the movie poster, I found three different versions of it, and I chose the one above because it was the most intriguing to me in the way it presents Arnold. Because it is the only one of the posters that puts Arnold in a suit.)
The other moment, that I think I would have had a stronger response to if I was alone, was the moment near the end where Val takes off Arnold’s wig and introduces Arnold as his mother.

If I had watched this scene alone, I think there is a very high likelihood I would have gotten teary eyed during that moment. Because Val has spent so much time throughout this film trying to hide Arnold away. Wanting to send him off for the evening so they didn’t have to worry, trying to replace him with his biological mother, who he had never really met just for the sake of maintaining appearances.
Arnold LOVES Val. It is glaringly obvious from the first moment they share a screen that to Arnold, that is his kid. And I cannot imagine what it must have felt like for Arnold to literally have his every move critiqued and criticized for acceptable levels of gayness by his son and his partner. To feel unwanted by his son and his partner. To feel replaced by his son and his partner. He deserves to see and hear his son choose him, to know that Val considers Arnold his parent. Especially when Val’s biological mother is standing right there.
And as for the comedy aspect of this movie? I mean, it’s Robin WIlliams and Nathan Lane so it is obviously going to be a truly hilarious film all the way through.

Where does it fall in my By, For, About Queers Categorization?
Tumblr media
For and About
Any piece of media that places queer characters at the center of it is something I would categorize as “About Queers”
As far as I can tell, the writers and director are not queer. I consider films to be made By Queers when a queer person has a role in controlling how the story unfolds, usually this means a writer or director for me, actors too if they have any influence  over changing the story. (As an example, The Last of Us Episode 3 would be something that I would place in a By Queers category because Murray Bartlet who played Frank is gay and also was consulted to shape the way the characters were written and the story played out.) While Nathan Lane is gay, and I am sure a number of actors who play side characters are as well, I do not know how much influence they had over the film itself. Which is why I am currently excluding it from the By Queers categorization.
And as for the For Queers aspect? That moment where Arnold appears in a suit and tie before the dinner party, where he appears so much more obviously gay when he’s in “masculine clothes” that is written for the people who understand. The undercurrent of pain I mentioned, that exists to be recognized by the people who understand. Also, I watched this at the movie theater and I saw what kind of crowd it drew lmfao.
Favorite moment in the film?
Well, I could go sappy with it and pick one of the scenes I referenced above, but I would be lying. My absolute, hands down, no contest favorite moment in this film was seeing Agador in this cropped tank top:

Now, I know that Ben told me that the Units could be done in any order, but I think I want to start from Unit 1 and work my way through from there, so stay tuned for a write-up about Pariah (2011) from Unit 1: Coming of Age Post Moonlight.

OCT 8 - VOLITION
Hold yourself together. Keep your Morale up.
Tumblr media
I had to resize this image 3 times to get tumblr to take it... it is also past midnight here, but the day change doesn't really count if I haven't gone to sleep yet, so :)
Volition. My love. my favourite skill. please enjoy. I also drew the volitions of some of my mutuals!! because I love you guys and your volitions very much (holding them gently in my hands). hopefully you guys dont mind and I didn't mess them up too badly
anyway. uhm. I'm much too tired to write anything super coherent right now. please write tags for me or write comments so I can see them when I wake up haha
and! there is a LOT under the cut. like, way more than any of the other days. it is giant. be very careful expanding it <3
ok here goes... I'm typing shorter ones out and screenshotting big ones
--------
Tumblr media
VOLITION - Stop, you're only making it worse for him -- you never help with *anything*.
Tumblr media
- Rare volition being rude to other skills!!! it only happens under pressure, too
KIM KITSURAGI - "What else could she have done? Lie? She saw there was no way to lie and get away with it."
DRAMA - You would have caught it.
VOLITION - Like hell you would have -- remember?
- you tell him volition!!
SUGGESTION - What is *wrong* with you? Why did you ask to be connected to her? Who *does* that?! Act professional now.
VOLITION - *You* told him to do that stupid thing...
- rare volition callout!!
YOU - Can I trust that guy?
VOLITION - A little. They're all still of limited use, interpreting things to the best of their ability. Maybe they add flair or something? I wouldn't know. I don't add flair.
- this is one of my favs haha. you don't need flair, love, it's ok
VOLITION - Ouch.... That's like twenty points of pride-damage right there, buddy.
- This is after Sylvie turns you down to get coffee. (and you do suffer a point of morale damage haha). him calling you buddy is so funny. it's always mildly condescending too!
- here's the other two:
VOLITION - You're no titan of Volition, buddy. He's got you in a fork. Sit down or leave.
VOLITION - You're a little more moralist now, buddy. A little more *normal*. Even if you didn't want to be.
YOU - "Cryptid extravaganza? I like the sound of that."
KIM KITSURAGI - "And I *don't*. Just one."
VOLITION - Or he'll be *disappointed* in you.
ENCYCLOPEDIA - Whooh... tough choice there.
- volition knows it's truly the most terrible thing haha
VOLITION - An enormous expenditure of willpower to build up strategic semen reserves? You had me at *willpower*. Let's do it!
ELECTROCHEMISTRY - Life is all about pleasure... why deny it?!
- these two are hilarious. poor echem. but also volition, honey, nono...
- the game implies consequences when increasing your skills too high but you don't see it with all of them. Volition's one you don't really see much downside to, but you can just. Imagine it here. Him pressuring you to do something stupid, just for the sake of it being difficult. Surely that's not healthy??
- I do think Volition has a lot of issues. I'll get into some more of them later though!!
Tumblr media
- but just... Harry wanting to do something that *is* a test of willpower and Volition is completely uninterested. But the semen retention thing is okay? sigh
- and then after that, he's just like. nope. we're not going to not swear :)
- he's so stupid sometimes. also it's absolutely hilarious to me that you can pick the "..." option over and over and Volition will match it forever. You simply cannot out-will your own willpower. It's just not possible.
Tumblr media
- I actually live for Volition being the singular voice of reason. Look at the others all chiming in!!
Tumblr media
- this one too, Volition being the only one trying to stop it! Why are they all piling on?? Composure not you too >:(
- I had excessively high Volition *and* Pain Threshold in my first run and the two of them!!! PT gets very self destructive at high levels, so seeing the relentless push and pull of PT and Volition was so good.
- This line from the description -> "Cool for: Sane People, Well-Adjusted Cops, The Non-Suicidal" yes it's cool for them, sure, but it's incredibly!!! important for NOT these people! Because Volition doesn't make you sane, or well-adjusted, or non-suicidal. He's just the one voice of reason in there trying to veer you away from making irreversibly bad decisions.
VOLITION - She tries to hide it, but some *great doubt* is spreading within her. There is a crown slowly cracking above her head.
- I need to talk about this line. Just. Volition acknowledging the existence of Joyce's own Volition (which he refers to as a crown!!!) cracking! the *great doubt* spreading and cracking apart the crown! hghh I live for any and every depiction of volition cracking apart when morale gets low and this is absolutely one of them.
AUTHORITY - Weren't you warned to *not* go down this path?! And yet you *still* go and do it...
VOLITION - Just because you *can* doesn't mean you *have to* say everything that comes to mind. Back out before the situation escalates.
- these two's dynamic is very funny to me. I love when they work together (but I also love when they fight! fight fight fight!)
VOLITION - Don't ask, don't look, don't do *anything* here. Just go away. Get back to work.
- "Just go away" ugh my guy is fighting for his life here to get you away from the cigarette and alcohol counter in the Frittte
Tumblr media
- hghhk Volition. this is a Challenging passive check too (the second one, to hang up). *one* chance, that's all he has in him. It's not possible at all in the dream, no matter how high your Volition stat is. It's just not something he can do. But here, with the distance of the payphone between you and possibly real consequences, he's able to manage one chance.
- (also did anyone see the post about the payphone conversation possibly being entroponetic crosstalk?? I could talk about that for way too long. but I am getting sidetracked)
YOU - "Yeah, I'm done talking about her. I don't want to think about her anymore."
RHETORIC - What a strange choice of words...
EMPATHY - Caustic, overflowing with negativity.
VOLITION - That can't be healthy. What's happening here? Why do you keep coming back to this window?
YOU - Nothing, everything's okay.
VOLITION - But it isn't. And you shouldn't come back to this anymore. This should be the last time. Stop talking about that damn window, please.
- this one too
VOLITION - Throw it away. Please.
- I need to talk about this. Volition dutifully directs you away from all the reminders of Dora. He does everything in his power to stop the final dream from happening.
- And I get it. He's trying to protect Harry. Because Harry isn't mentally stable right now and it could endanger the case. but... at least, when the final dream happens Kim is (usually) there when you wake up. And if all went well, you get to go back to your precinct, and take Kim with you. And Harry has support.
- If the dream doesn't happen... it will happen eventually. There are a million reminders in Martinaise in the span of a week, imagine what Jamrock is like. It's an inevitability. And then you're taking the chance that the dream happens at a time when Harry is much worse off. Maybe he's alone. Maybe Kim left, maybe he was let go from the force.
- The dream could happen at a better time too, of course. we probably all imagine harry picking up the pieces after martinaise and his life finally taking a turn for the better. and I imagine this is what Volition had in mind, by delaying the dream. Maybe it can be delayed for a long time, long enough.
- but it's a huge risk and I just... don't know if he's making the right choice here. keeping important information about Harry's past, which has shaped his relationships and life considerably, in a box so it can't hurt him
- yeah. anyway...
YOU - What if I don't want to ask questions?
REACTION SPEED - You're a cop, Harry. It is *unnatural* of you not to want to ask questions.
VOLITION - You don't have to. No one is forcing you to be a cop.
- Volition??? sometimes this guy makes no sense, he's so funny. I really think he occasionally just does something for the sake of being defiant
EGG HEAD - "Please. Please?" The young man smiles at you widely, bright and innocent as the summer sun.
VOLITION - His pleaful smile is disarming, but you can withstand it's glorious assault, if you just put your heart into it.
- why? why?? don't turn down egg head ever!
VOLITION - Alright, come on now. If *he* hasn't said anything about your lack of pants, no one will. You're only hurting yourself by not wearing them...
- this one is so funny. I love that he lets you know he *knows* you're trying to get a reaction and you're not going to get one!!
Tumblr media
- yes volition, stop himmm
ELECTROCHEMISTRY - How very astute of you! This renders it ineffectual. You should look for a *whole* cigarette. Or better yet -- an entire pack! Strike that, a CARTON! Make sure they're all healthy and able-bodied, then smoke them all.
VOLITION - Or -- you could *not* do that. No one is making you.
- volition as usual trying to stop you from picking up bad habits... I just love the way he talks. he's not even telling you not to, just voicing his disapproval in a rather passive way
INTERFACING - Wow, the gods of mass production have made this alcohol container *laughably* easy to open. A child could have done it.
VOLITION - I don't know about this...
- he still doesn't outright tell you not to drink it... :(((
ELECTROCHEMISTRY - Fine. We're not worried... you'll crawl back to this bottle soon enough. We'll give you another chance. Booze *always* gives you *another* chance.
SUGGESTION - Yes, it's *merciful* that way. It's your friend. Come back to it, we're all rooting for you to.
VOLITION - Not *all* of us...
- he's the only one rooting for you to not drink it!! he can't stop you. but he is supporting you in the only way he's able.
VOLITION - No. You *can* stop. Just wade through the hell. Month after month. Year after year -- you against the nothingness. It's possible, because *time* is possible.
- He can encourage you!!
YOU - "I *will* stop drinking."
MEASUREHEAD - "THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE. THE GAME OF *SHAH-MAT* YOU PLAY AGAINST THE GUL'S TRICKS IS UNWINNABLE. THE DAYS, THE WEEKS, THE MONTHS WILL WEAR YOU OUT. THE OCCIDENTAL HAPLOGROUP IS INCAPABLE OF LONG TERM LUCID THOUGHT."
VOLITION - NO.
- volition!!! <3 that's all he needs to say.
HORRIFIC NECKTIE - This is it. I'm gonna hit the ground and burn away now. Most of the people in this yard are gonna die -- if not all. Probably you too. It's a COMPLETE DISASTER.
PAIN THRESHOLD - Get ready for a world of pain, man.
VOLITION - No. Not a disaster. Weave this into the story of you. Walk out of its *ruins*. Save those who still can be saved -- *I'm* on your side.
ESPRIT DE CORPS - And the lieutenant too. And the men behind your back, drawing their weapons... you can live. You can get out of this.
- hnngh. this one is among my favourites too. my amazing 1 int run also had 1 motorics. at this point I had failed the rhetoric check to save ruby, failed the logic check to save lizzie, and now failed the spirit bomb throw too and was about ready to cry. Volition's quiet reassurance was very important to me in that moment. EdC too, and I did save Kim.
HAND/EYE COORDINATION - Your hand trembles as you scratch at your cheek... oh no, that's not how a grown man shaves!
YOU - Leave it for now.
HAND/EYE COORDINATION - Thank god, I would have cut your throat.
VOLITION - The centipede is exaggerating -- people don't actually cut their own throats when they're shaving. At least not accidentally.
- centipede!!! it's such a funny nickname. alternatively
HAND/EYE COORDINATION - Your hand trembles as you scratch at your cheek... oh no, that's not how a grown man shaves!
YOU - This isn't sharp enough. Scrape harder.
HAND/EYE COORDINATION - Stop, for crying out loud! You're gonna cut your own throat.
VOLITION - There's no way to salvage this.
- these guys are hilarious. why is volition even watching this mess? 'there's no way to salvage this.' ??? I'm not even sure if he's referring to you or H/E... he must be so tired.
ENDURANCE - You feel like you're about to faint and fall off the swing. Your hands get clammy and the air tastes sour to breathe.
HALF LIGHT - Oh god, Harry! Oh god, Harry, what did you do...?!
VOLITION - No! Just nope. Say no to this, Harry.
- more of this!! >:( of volition trying to just avoid anything painful. wake up man.
LOGIC - Everything is so pretty and red -- you and Leo look like brothers as you glance around with similar childlike wonder.
VOLITION - Keep it together, no need to show your wonder.
- why? :( it's not hurting anyone. legendary difficulty passive for volition, high levels of volition are sometimes questionable. I love collecting all these instances of volition making weird suggestions. it's like when people point out really weird things Kim does, that you don't really notice as weird because he does it so calmly and confidently.
VOLITION - Huh... no, Mr. Conclusion. You're always kind of limited in your analytical abilities. That's not *her* fault. But still...
- volition: you're kind of limited in your analytical abilities... meanwhile logic and viscalc and ency calling you stupid and brain damaged lol. vol is so gentle about it!!
- then again...
VOLITION - ...no? He's not going to show up? I'm sorry, your lie detection isn't working. It's not her doing, he's just totally inept. It looks like you're also an idiot. But that's not her fault.
- lol.
RHETORIC - This is good. Clear the air first -- between you two -- then move on to questions.
VOLITION - No, it's not good. It's the opposite of that. This will let her dictate the terms of your...
RHETORIC - Shush. I can't hear what she's saying.
- no. don't ever cut off or shush volition ever again
Tumblr media
- >:(
YOU - No-no-no-no...
INLAND EMPIRE - Yes, yes, yes, yes.
VOLITION - No-no, we're not starting with that. Not now. Not this time. This thought is over.
- volitionnnn... ily. my own volition also cuts off dangerous lines of thought for me. I think he's got to be constantly vigilant, in order to be so good at it. must be exhausting :(
YOU - "Can't promise that. I might attack him again." [Leave.]
KIM KITSURAGI - The lieutenant groans, but doesn't say anything.
VOLITION - That's right, you *should* do it again! It's the *last* thing he'll be expecting.
- uhm. not sure that's a good idea!!
VOLITION - You're too weak to say 'no' now. Waking up is the worst part. Maybe somewhere down the line you could decline...
- referring to declining the speed. all volition fails are very sad
VOLITION - Yes, look at yourself. What do you see?
YOU - Just a sorry stack of shit...
VOLITION - Yeah, didn't even know they stack shit *that* sorry.
- beautiful, rare volition scolding you!!!! after you disregard his advice and don't apologize to kim after the church fail. he's on your side, but he also knows he needs to tell you that this wasn't okay.
VOLITION - First the investigation, now this... how many more things do you have to fuck up?
- this one too! same scenario. this is a difficulty 16 (Godly) check...
Tumblr media
- yes this again. it just needs to be in here. the volition panic attack. if this volition passive doesn't fire, you take no volition damage. it's completely self-inflicted :(((
PAYPHONE - The headset lands in the cradle with a clank. There it sits -- still warm from your hand. You have no idea what just happened.
(heal 2 endurance and 2 volition)
- if you hang up the phone before dora picks up!
VOLITION - He subdues the feeling. Dusts himself off and moves on. So should you. There will be other chances.
(heal 2 volition)
- if Kim misses getting a picture of the phasmid
HORRIFIC NECKTIE - The necktie is guiding you through this. It's your spirit animal, both your nemesis and friend. Suddenly a feeling of ease brushes through you -- you're fine again.
(heal 2 volition and 1 endurance)
AUTHORITY - That... was the most honourable thing anyone has ever done, Harry.
(heal all volition)
- very special incidences of healing more than 1 volition at once!! the fact that healing/damaging morale is just directly called heal/damage volition in the variable naming is. yeah. I think about it constantly. does it hurt him? I think it does. and he never says anything about it (unlike endurance!) he just bears with it quietly.
VOLITION - In honour of your shit, lieutenant-yefreitor. Which you kept *together* in the face of total, unrelenting terror. Day after day. Second by second.
INLAND EMPIRE - DETECTIVE
ESPRIT DE CORPS - ARRIVING
AUTHORITY - ON THE SCENE
- obviously this one has to be in here. funnily enough, in my second playthrough I had 2 PSY but everyone had been bumped up enough that they all fired except authority... I ended up throwing a point into authority and retrying the dialogue so it could be complete haha
VOLITION - What? I thought you had your shit together! This is nearing a complete meltdown! Stop it!
- volitionnn :( if you don't stop you have a panic attack, so I guess he's only trying to help
Tumblr media
- this is too funny. volition honey, you absolutely do add flair too
YOU - Oh, you mean Cuno?
VOLITION - Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!
- yup, absolutely no flair. Super. Tip-top!
VOLITION - These guys are compromised. She's got them singing along to her tune. The little bleeps and bloops you trust for info -- you can't trust them anymore.
- it would be a crime to not include the bleeps and bloops in here! why does he call them that?? haha
Tumblr media
- rare instance of volition not being able to stop the disaster!
INLAND EMPIRE - Your surroundings are undisturbed. While you slept, you were alone. Now that you're awake -- you're still alone.
HALF LIGHT - Get the fuck out of here. Fuck this place, fuck this world, fuck this life, fuck this body -- just fucking go.
SAVOIR FAIRE - The sheets are stained red. Your blood's been running again. Keep it together. Just get out of here and finish this fucking thing.
VOLITION - Harry... I know there's not much to say -- but if nothing else, just remember that you've made it this far. And it's just a bit farther now. Let's finish this.
- this is just. it's awful, if you have the final dream all alone. but at least you have volition with you
DICK MULLEN AND THE MISTAKEN IDENTITY - Dick Mullen was made to crack skulls and solve cases. It's who he is. He could no more stop being a detective than a tiger could cease to be a predator in the night.
VOLITION - You're no tiger, though, Harry. You're a man. It's your curse to have to choose.
- I like this one.
ELECTROCHEMISTRY - That sugary black rum stain on the counter makes you teary-eyed with joy. It's almost touching how syrupy and sticky it is. How long have you been up already?
YOU - Not now.
ELECTROCHEMISTRY - Oh *excuse me*, do you have something better to do than lust for sweet syrupy rum and lemonade? With a twist of lemon? Maybe lime? Maybe who cares, just rum?
VOLITION - Yes, you do have something better to do. Stop drooling over that stupid rum stain and go. Before it's too late.
- this is a challenging (difficulty 12) check! it's very difficult to resist the sticky rum stain I guess
YOU - Give up.
LOGIC - There we go. Your mind is a relaxed muscle. It's so nice and easy to give up, isn't it? On the downside -- you have no idea what you were supposed to do now. I could have *debriefed* you.
VOLITION - Blissful idiot -- say something. You've stood there for too long.
- blissful idiot
VOLITION - Don't be an idiot and say it. In this day and age, of all times. It won't end well.
- once again, volition pushing you away from the bi-curious thing. :( he just wants to keep you safe, but it comes at a cost.
- you can't just wrap harry in bubblewrap, volition. he'll never grow
Tumblr media
- volition absolutely saving the day here. do NOT say it harry! authority's advice is SO hit or miss
VOLITION - It's time to leave it be. You're about to make a child cry. Are you proud of yourself?
YOU - Damn right I am! Proud as the Lion of Serber.
VOLITION - Excuse me, I'm not sure I heard that properly...
- volition ily. he has to deal with so much.
VOLITION - Should we? He's *nice*. I don't like *nice*.
- this is so funny. he's very suspicious.
VOLITION - Look at it, detective. And be ashamed. Until you make it right by *legally purchasing* that raincoat, I'll make sure you feel guilty every time you see it.
- YES YES conscience volition!!
YOU - Close the carabiner.
SLEEPING DOCKWORKER - The sleeping dockworker has little to say about your actions. He remains silent.
VOLITION - You're not 100% clear what you did here was *right*, but to hell with it...
- only sometimes!!
VOLITION - I can't restrain this one. The need to *cop* is too strong. You just need to ask it.
- why are you trying to restrain copping??? this guy, sometimes. he's so stupid (affectionate)
VOLITION - That's it. I'm calling it. Kim is beyond compromised.
- uhm. volition completely overcompensating with the compromised skills is quite funny. once drama wakes up, he does it too
VOLITION - See? It's oddly moderate. Probably compromised.
- oddly moderate now means compromised??
Tumblr media
- this is it. this is volition's only comment on this disastrous authority fail. he makes no attempt to stop it!!
VOLITION - Being Cuno's pig has a steadying effect on your hand. Go with the flow, man...
- volition's so silly sometimes
DAMAGED LEDGER - You feel that thing in the back of your head? That little voice, that quiet scream? You already felt this was a bad idea, but especially right now it's even worse. Try as you might, you can't read it now.
VOLITION - You've got *business* to deal with first. Talk to the Union boss first, at least... I can't stop you for long, but there's just enough of an excuse now.
- Volition fighting for his life to stop you from reading the letter :,(
VOLITION - If it's possible, then by pure willpower alone. You are going to have to become... a psycholocomotor.
- that is *not* a real word but we love you anyway vol
LOGIC - Is that how it is now? We should just try all good things *twice* and then give up? By that logic...
VOLITION - Not you too...
- he's all alone out here :(
VOLITION - Someone's been a very busy boy. Good on you...
- thank you...?
VOLITION - *Very* off. Just let her go. Listen to me for once...
- for once?? :((( but if you try...
VOLITION - I can't help you. I am totally useless. Everything I've said is lies. I want the exact same bad things you want. To stand here, like a pillar of salt, saying...
- this is probably one of the saddest lines. all the skills falling apart in the dream is awful, but volition might be the worst. it's also very important that volition *does* want the exact same thing you want. He wants to drink and smoke and think of dora and die. And he chooses to resist it anyways. To be the only thing standing in your way. But it's to the point where it's all he knows. He knows that he has to resist the things he wants, and will occasionally take it too far. Keeping Harry (and himself) from things that will make them happy. In the setting of the game, Volition keeps things together and on track. But once Harry is back in his normal life, it will become very much a double edged sword I think. Luckily(?) it will self balance a bit, where if Volition prevents Harry from being happy then he'll lose morale, weakening volition, and then vol won't prevent harry as much and it'll balance out. hopefully.
VOLITION - Despair creeps into you, getting fat on your weakness. Whatever noble intentions you once had as a police officer -- it's eating them all up now.
VOLITION - Nothing you can say would make you feel any better now...
- 😭 I hate this, I hate the volition death. the endurance one is really painful too, but this one's painful in a different way. Volition isn't getting back up from this. the awful newspaper clipping saying you go to live under a bridge... that's what happens when you let volition die?? if any of the other skills (except endurance) drop to 0 you can just raise them back up, but vollll.... ugh.
VOLITION - Listen... It's okay to take a few minutes to yourself. Sit down and have a breather.
ENDURANCE - You need to rest. Your body is aching. Getting in here has taken something out of you. Have a seat.
- our two health pool boys encouraging you to take care of yourself <3
YOU - "Kim, can *you* see it?!"
KIM KITSURAGI - "I can see it."
VOLITION - Four simple words -- thank god. If he can see, then you're not insane.
- this one is obviously very important.
YOU - "I've finally gone insane..." (Put your head in your hands.)
[...]
VOLITION - My god... maybe you *are*.
- if Kim and Cuno aren't there, and your Volition is really low, you get this very sad fail. :(
VOLITION - True, you ought not love ruins and hell -- and the fading scent of apricots.
- I like this one.
WASHERWOMAN - "I *can* wash it for you," she says after looking the jacket over, "but it's going to take about a half an hour. Think you can stay put for that long?"
VOLITION - Hell yeah!
PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT - No, we must run around ceaselessly. It would be torture to stay put.
- I really really love him.
YOU - "By the way, I'm going to sing karaoke here."
GARTE, THE CAFETERIA MANAGER - "Absolutely out of the question."
VOLITION - You wait and see, cafeteria manager!
- volition will not be told no!!
VOLITION - No one can STOP you from finding the phasmid.
PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT - WHAT IS HAPPENING TO YOU?!?! Are you going to CRY now, son?
VOLITION - You heard the coach! This is weakness. It cannot go on much longer, or you will LOSE.
- these guys are great. coach!
YOU - Right. Activate Denial Mode.
VOLITION - You're not really an automaton, you do know that?
- oh, thank you for the insight volition
Tumblr media
- even your most willful, imaginative skills know this scope creep was insurmountable...
DRAMA - But we *are* awake, sire! She has been forthcoming -- with sordid details women usually conceal! Most *shocking* details of the sexual kind! We are a bulwark, un-breached...
VOLITION - You've been breached, bulwark. You've been breached, like, a thousand times now!
- nooo poor drama (volition is right)
Tumblr media
- Volition trying to reassure you after the Tribunal is very important.
Tumblr media
- SO TRUE.
DRAMA - This may have been a *grave* mistake, sire.
VOLITION - Maybe. Maybe not. Mercy is rarely a *complete* mistake.
- I really adore this quote.
I think I'm going to leave it here. I haven't included some quotes that I put in other posts already but I might add them in later to have a comprehensive Volition post... But I've spent like 4 hours on this already so I'm giving it a rest for now :)

as someone who relates a lot to both Anakin and Padme because i grew in a stressfully abusive enviroment (not being allowed to express too honest emotions and fear, having to mask my neurodivergent tendencies, not being able to raise my voice ever or cry or be angry, etcetc) and i was a "gifted kid", and on top of that i'm queer. So for a lot of my teenhood i "attached" *badly* to anything that would remotely give me comfort, mostly objects but also people and friends, it's been quite healing to read your analysis about how "attachments" are presented in SW and how the fandom tends to twists attachments as something toxic and selfish, it's understandable when people don't like him but when everyone runs to say he was evil just for getting attached or feeling "too strongly" about something is quite hurtful
victims should be accountable for the things they do wrong, and anakin outright did so many many horrible bad things, but it's cathartic for me bc he shows how victims of abuse and trauma aren't and can't be perfect, and they react in ways that are inherently affected by the enviroment that shaped them, and in the end, anakin had one of the most famous and iconic returns ever, so it's really important to me, and your analysis are great
Thanks anon. I had a period over a couple months where I was very hardcore pro Jedi/anti anakin which in retrospect was really just to fit in with what was popular on tumblr since all the big SW blogs like Kanansdume/antianakin or GFFA are Jedi apologists. I regret a lot of my past behavior and how I treated some Anakin fans. A lot of Jedi stans like to paint anyone who likes Anakin as a right wing dudebro and it doesn’t help that there are a few people who are that way such as caripr94 or Otnesse. Yet their side isn’t much better. There’s a lot of ableism, victim blaming, and queerphobia rebranded to sound progressive. For all their pseudo-wokeness, a lot of them sound like conservatives when they put the blame entirely on Anakin for his fall and refuse to acknowledge systematic and psychological issues he had because they’d have to accept that the Jedi were flawed and not perfect.
Fandom in general has become a lot more puritanical and moralistic. People insist that you can’t show any sympathy or depth for villains, possibly as an overreaction towards movies like Maleficent or Cruella as well as the rise of Trump, hence why everyone felt Big Jack Horner was refreshing and propping up TOH as the anti SU for killing Belos. The SW fandom is no different. Antianakin has a whole pinned post ranting about not just Anakin but Padme, Ahsoka, Kallus and Crosshair too. People insist you must view Anakin as an allegory for a white boy radicalized by 4chan and Jordan Peterson but one could argue he’s closer to those in the global south who live in poverty and oppression as well as queer people who have to hide their relationships or risk being rejected by their communities.
SW isn’t even close to my top fandom or favorite media but I do post about it if it relates to stuff I do like more like anime or Ben 10. It’s easy to write off a character as just born evil which removes the tragedy knowing that he was a good person at one point and dehumanizing villains allows people to reject the idea that they could become that way. I like a lot of characters who are flawed or abrasive because of trauma or abuse they suffered such as Shinji and Asuka from NGE, Hodaka from WWY, Raven from TT or Homura from PMMM. Anakin/Vader is an interesting character who has been dumbed down to just a “fascist MAGA manchild” by some when, for all my criticism of him, is not what Lucas wrote. As a side note, knowing that all 4 OT Vader actors have passed away is sad. RIP Sebastian Shaw, Bob Anderson, David Prowse and James Earl Jones. May the force be with you all.

[“Coming from the Bible Belt in Kansas, I knew very well where the church and conservative moralists stood. But when I moved to New York at age twenty, even my open-minded friends thought masturbation was a second-rate substitute for “the real thing.” That was in the 1950s. My only source of sex information was marriage manuals and random bits of Freudian psychiatry. When I finally made it to the couch, my therapist and I had the same romantic image—mature sex was having vaginal orgasms from intercourse within a meaningful relationship. Adult masturbation was okay if I didn’t do it too much; otherwise it would be compulsive or infantile behavior. I was sure that several times a week was too much, so with grim determination, I set out to find Prince Charming in order to live happily and orgasmically ever after.
Throughout my twenties, I had superromantic, monogamous love affairs with passionate orgasms from intercourse. My lovers and I always planned to get married, which justified the sex. Masturbating while I was involved with a man would have meant there was something terribly wrong with my sexlife. Each of these affairs lasted about two years, and the breakup was always devastating. Being romantically in love was like mainlining emotions. I was hooked on my beloved, and there was no way I could live without my fix. Never once did I become a smart romantic addict who had learned how to move along to the next lover without suffering. At the end of each affair, I nearly wiped myself out with sorrow, regret, despair, or rage.
After years of searching for love, my prince finally found me. It was a romantic dream come true, and at twenty-nine, I got married, just in time to escape the horrible fate of going over the hill alone. During the first year, I felt our sexual exchange was modest, but my therapist said we would be more passionate in bed after we made our “marital adjustments.” I quit my job and concentrated on marriage. I was now economically secure, but I was getting more and more concerned about our sexlife. In our marriage’s second year, we were having sex about once a month. When we did make love, my husband would come too fast, and I wouldn’t come at all. Afterward, we’d both be embarrassed and silent. When he was asleep, I would quickly and quietly masturbate under the covers. I’d do it barely moving or breathing, feeling sick with frustration and guilt.
Since we were in love, I couldn’t understand why we weren’t into sex. I was a doomed romantic junkie, trapped in a marriage that a wasn’t living up to my romantic ideal. Sometimes I felt it was all my fault. Our lack of sex meant I wasn’t holding up my end of the marital bargain. I had no sexual value, and he didn’t really love me. Torn between blaming myself, blaming him, or blaming the institution of marriage, I was too busy to consider sexual alternatives. With joyful masturbation, I could have had an orgasm every day and one decent fuck a month. But no! Every time I wanted sex, I had to depend on my other half, and sometimes he really did have a headache.
Over the next few years, there was so much tension and so little communication in our marriage that I stopped wanting sex with my husband altogether. Instead, I began creating monumental masterpieces of art. But in the sixth year, no matter how much I tried to sublimate my desire, hot sexual memories crept back into my consciousness. Once my husband went on a business trip and my horniness spilled over into a private one-week orgy of drawing my sexual fantasies, getting turned on, and masturbating way beyond the point of going blind. I drew all the exciting sexual perversions I could think of, which were actually very few—oralsex, fucking doggie style, and a threesome. Overwhelmed with guilt at my hedonistic debauchery, I destroyed the drawings. I actually tore them up into tiny bits and flushed them down the toilet, afraid someone might find the scraps in the garbage and put the pieces together.
Of course my marriage fell apart. I wanted orgasmic partnersex to be part of my life.”]

some books I've read recently, attempting to become horny
rated on: narrative kinkiness, sexual horniness, completeness, non-stupidity. The last two are different aspects of overall quality. Completeness means: did it live up to the shape of what it wants to be as a book? Non-stupidity is, is that shape stupid or not?
10/10 completeness means it completely lives up to its own vision, elicits no desire in me to mentally rewrite it. The actual best books for horny/creative purposes are around a 5/10.
10/10 non-stupid means that the vision is actually good and not idiotic. Low score might mean the characters behave nonsensically, or that the conflict is resolved with deus ex machina, or that the AI who has been keeping world peace gives up its monopoly on violence for moralistic reasons and this is played as anything other than a catastrophe for mankind.
The Scholomance by R. Lee Smith
Erotic horror. Very erotic and very horrifying, but more effective at the latter. Telepath enters a rapey and murdery school run by demons to find and rescue her friend.
Narratively kinky: 6/10.
Horny: technically 9/10 but it didn't work for me because the characters' sexualities are so violent and alien (this works within the worldbuilding though) so 3/10 for me personally
Completeness: 9/10. It could be shorter but I'm glad it wasn't. I liked all the mucking about.
Non-stupidity: 7.8/10
The Last Hour of Gann by R. Lee Smith
Sci-fi with alienfucking. First half is torture because the main character has the same 100-page conflict with two people but for 400 pages. I did not care about the lizard man she falls in love with. I did care about the worldbuilding, and the reveal at the end about why the world is shaped that way. Solid prose of the kind I aspire to – descriptive, competent, neither too sparse nor too flowery.
Narratively kinky: 4/10. It was fine I guess.
Horny: Technically 9/10 but for me 4/10. Higher than the other book because I liked the long dancing around alien genitals.
Completeness: 6/10. Docking a lot of points for the repetitive first half.
Non-stupidity: 8/10.
The Tied Man by Tabitha McGowan
Famous painter gets blackmailed into being a painter in residence for a wealthy sadist with a male sex slave she pimps out for other sadists, who is wooed and rescued over the course of the book. Man, this should have been up my alley but I just did not like the ship. I liked it as a thriller but not as a romance.
Narratively kinky: 8/10
Horny: 8/10
Complete: 7/10
Non-stupid: 5/10
Its sequel, Unbound by Tabitha McGowan
The recovery arc, where the 85:15 hurt/comfort ratio flips. Ehh. I didn't care for the rescued guy's family drama, nor the previous antagonist's son stepping into her shoes. I'm not going to remember anything about this book in a year.
Narratively kinky: 2/10
Horny: 4/10
Complete: 5/10
Non-stupid: 5/10
After the Storm by a variety of authors
Guy traumatized by his previous job reenters an old job where everyone is nice and there is no conflict except for his own anxiety. If that's your thing, and it's nonzero mine
Narratively kinky: 5/10, because of the premise and the thing where he's descended from supersoldiers who weigh 300 pounds and no one understands how much he needs to eat and keeps hurting him accidentally via underfeeding
Horny: 7/10 technically but they were cheerful and bantering and cloying during the sex, so, 2/10
Complete: 6/10
Non-stupid: 7/10
Dark Rise by CS Pacat
uhh there's a reincarnation of a dark lord except he doesn't want to be dark lord. And there's the reincarnation of the dark lord's sex slave. And then there's the other stuff which should be like 65% of the book but is 95%. Horrible!
Narratively kinky: would be 9/10 for the ship but it gets very little pagetime. You know what gets pagetime? The most phoned in YA induction into a secret magical society ever. So, 2/10. Anger.
Horny: 1/10
Complete: 2/10
Non-stupid: 3/10. All of these ratings would be higher if the author had gone hard in on the ship. The book is a weird hybrid; they seem to be trying to capture the YA market and also please their hardcore D/s readership from the previous series
Its sequel, Dark Heir
Narratively kinky: 6/10, there's more of the ship, which is by far the most interesting thing going on
Horny: 3/10
Complete: 5/10
Non-stupid: 5/10. Still nerfed by trying to be generic YA
The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow
In a war-fractured post-climate-apocalypse world, an AI takes all the world leaders' children hostage and executes them if their parents start a war. Also nukes cities sometimes. The hostages are the main characters.
Narratively kinky: 5/10. I like hostages. I like the weird little world they have – many of these kids are celebrities and future world leaders, but they're also on a little low tech farm school, doing farm chores and fearing for their lives. It's a unique atmosphere.
Horny: 1/10. There's a tepid f/f hookup. It's fine. The character's sexuality is very secondary in her own interests. She wonders if she's queer but it's really not a priority to figure out
Complete: 6/10. I'm conflicted as to which metric to dock points from for the extremely annoying secondary protagonist. I've concluded it's execution not vision.
Non-stupid: 8/10
Its sequel, The Swan Riders
It gets kinkier when the MC gets uplifted into an AI (still in her own body though) and she's having a new peer relationship with the dictator of the entire world who is losing touch with his humanity. And it's kinky when one of the bodies hosting that dictator AI gets its connection permanently severed, so there's a copy of that AI newly mortal and figuring how to exist. While they're on a roadtrip with some people who might or might not want to kill them. It's a great idea. Unfortunately, the factual mystery of the book is resolved in a stupid way, and the ethical/political dilemma is resolved in the stupidest possible way ("maybe it's bad to be a dictator, let's try global anarchy" – are you shitting me). So.
Narratively kinky: 7/10
Horny: 0/10
Complete: 7/10
Non-stupid: 3/10

Hi I hope you are well, what do you think about putting characters without errors? I mean, those who are supposed to be moralists, you read them and well... you get a disappointment, the same thing happened to me with Lily Evans, I don't hate her but I don't like her either, because in the narrative she is apparently "perfect" but wasn't she the same one who said that at least the marauders don't use dark magic? I mean, how? The dark arts aren't even well defined and they want to make them out to be bad? I can understand Sirius's opinion, who is a Black and was perhaps raised to learn dark arts, but he doesn't explain why they are bad. Why is it bad to learn them if in the worst memory we see that they use a spell to wash against a person?
The context dictates that both are bad (Mulciber and the Marauders) but her saying that seems very...... silly to me, and then Lily ends up marrying HER own stalker, who kept insisting on going out with her, who mistreated her best friend to get her to go out with him....... their relationship seems very disturbing to me. Did she let herself be manipulated by James? because I don't understand why the same author makes Lily out to be a saint, when in reality she has many character flaws?
Hello anon! Sorry for the wait.
I mean, those who are supposed to be moralists, you read them and well... you get a disappointment
It's very frustrating, I know. It can make a story enjoyable if done right but fandom discourse reminds you why it's annoying.
because in the narrative she is apparently "perfect"
I think the problem with Lily is that it's hard to get a read on her because the pool of people who actually knew her is pretty limited. Her sister Petunia has a lot of conflicted feelings about her so there is a lot of resentment when she speaks about Lily. Snape has rose-tinted glasses because Lily was his only "true" friend and he feels responsible for her death. Sirius and Remus don't seem to have a deep connection with her either so they hardly talk about her beyond some vague sentiments. Teachers like Slughorn liked her but how well do teachers know their students beyond their grades most of the time?? That's why she seems so perfect. At least to me. The same thing happened with James...until SWM. Then we saw how awful this punk was. Not to mention people typically don't want to speak ill of the dead, especially to the orphan kid.
Dark magic is not explained well at all. But Lily deserves some grace: she is a muggleborne who is still new to the wizarding world. It's not her fault that she has been taught about how evil the dark arts is. Anyway, I don't think she was being a good friend in that scene. Then again, I am biased here because I don't care for Lily's paper thin character.
I also hate Jily. I doubt James was stalking her so let's give the dude the benefit of the doubt. The timeline of the Jily relationship is still very questionable. Also, I am not convinced of James' alleged change of heart. Even if Lily truly believed he changed, I don't know how he changed and how he proved it to her. Either way, there is arguably some deceit happening here. Not to mention, the war probably rushed their marriage too. I find the Jily relationship utterly disgusting and I am not too sorry that they are dead except for poor Harry becoming an orphan and living with his abusive relatives.
