I never have high expectations for Tholomyès, but his song is so bad and I can’t tell if it’s intentional (to emphasize that he’s trying to show off and isn’t actually that intelligent) or if Hugo just wasn’t great at Spanish.

To be perfectly honest, Hugo loses me when he rants about love, so I’m sure there’s a lot of interesting stuff here, but most of it went over my head. One line that did stand out to me, though, was this:

“The patrician and the knife-grinder, the duke and the peer, the limb of the law, the courtiers and townspeople, as they used to say in olden times, all are subjects of this fairy.”

I think presenting love as something that strikes all equally regardless of class is meant to be part of the happy atmosphere of this chapter, but strangely, almost all of the examples here are definitely high-class (”patricians”, “dukes”, “peers,” and “courtiers”). Given his focus on artists in this paragraph, this may be a result of who would have access to “high culture” to, for example, publish poems on love. Someone writing from a court would likely differentiate between different people there and label everyone outside of that “townspeople.” And yet this group is predicated on class inequality. All of the women are workers to some extent, even if their exact situations vary, while all of the men are students from well-off families. Maybe they’re all capable of “falling in love,” but their experiences are shaped by their backgrounds.

What I find frustrating about this section is that sometimes, I can’t tell why Hugo is saying something. For instance, he writes: “Beautiful women waste themselves sweetly. They think that this will never come to an end.” “Waste” and “sweetly” is a strange combination, and he adds that poets love this. Perhaps he’s reflecting on what he considers the tragically fleeting nature of beauty in women (in short: Hugo being weird and sexist)? Or on love itself being fleeting? He also says that women “think” this will never end; with “waste”, could this be foreshadowing something bad? And yet the rest of the paragraph seems positive (?). I just don’t know what to make of it.

do yall ever think about bruce/batman!clone danny standing in front of his bathroom mirror after finding out he was a clone and silently tracing his face. The slope of his jaw and point of his chin. The high angle of his cheekbones and the shape of his eyes, the curve of his brow bones and the shape of his nose. The volume of his hair and the way it curls and gets fluffy when it gets too long.

His hair is black the same way a crow's wing is black. His dad's hair is black the same way a black bear's fur is black. His dad's eyes are blue like the ocean is blue. Danny's eyes are blue the same way a glacier is blue.

His dad has a square jaw and straight flat hair, and he tans and gets a face full of freckles when he's out in the sun for too long. Danny burns like a lobster and his face remains untouched. Danny has a sharp jaw and tall cheekbones, and Sam says when he's not smiling there's almost something regal about him. You would never call Jack Fenton "regal" when he's not smiling.

Sam says when he's not smiling he looks scary the same way a stone statue is. Jack Fenton when he's not smiling looks scary the same way that german shepherd staring at you across the street is.

Do you ever think he grew up wondering if he was adopted. Because of course, he has black hair and blue eyes like his dad. But having the same color doesn't make you someone's child.

Or, worse, things he's heard from the other kids and the other parents and even some of his teachers growing up; that he was the product of an affair. And that his dad was just too stupid to notice. And Danny would defend his parents until the day he died, because Jack Fenton wasn't an idiot and Maddie Fenton wasn't a cheater.

But doubt comes in with fickle tongue. his parents swear up and down that he is their child when he asks about either. That Danny just had his grandparents' features, but he was their son and they loved him.

But Danny doesn't look like either of his parents. His mom's eyes are blue like an aquamarine and Jazz's too. And they burn like lobsters in the sun too, but Jazz gets freckles on her face and so does Maddie. And as Danny grows up he doesn't bulk up or get stocky like his dad did, and when he hits puberty he doesn't shoot up like a tree like Jack Fenton did.

He stays small, and they say he's a late bloomer (and he is), or that he just has his mom's height. But he's fast and has good stamina, and some days it feels like he's built entirely different from his family. That the things they went through growing up just didn't apply to him. Jack and Maddie Fenton both had acne and breakouts when they hit puberty, and Jazz inherits it and he's seen the amount of skincare products she keeps on her side of the bathroom.

And then he hits puberty and breaks out maybe once or twice, but his skin stays clear for the most part and the problems and changes his dad went through just don't happen to him.

And the truth is worse than all of the lies.

How horrifying.

I feel like the F1 film should be a comedy not whatever it is at the moment

for me, i think if you're going to do a serious f1 film, and make it dramatic etc. etc. you should probably respect the sport enough to make it even semi-accurate which they clearly haven't done. and if you're not going to respect the sport enough to make it accurate then you should lean into the absurdist humour inherent in f1.

because this is, objectively, a ridiculous sport. one of the sports oldest and most historic teams is essentially a genuine competitor to the catholic church in terms of italian devotion, and another uses excel to keep track of car parts. one time the drivers went on strike and slept together in a banquet hall filled with mattresses and played piano and made mpreg jokes. some of f1's most iconic figures have played characters in asterix or cars. drivers have thrown juice all over each other during a press conference, and showed up in helicopters to wake each other up in the morning. one of the most dominant forces in modern f1 is an energy drink company. multiple current drivers have instagrams for their pets where they pretend their pets can talk. drivers have shown up to track walks in their pyjamas to protest the early hour and then found out that the track was still being resurfaced. one driver once tried to push his car over the finish line and then fainted from heat exhaustion. it literally used to be run by an evil goblin and the son of a famous british fascist. one time a diamond was glued to the nose of a car for a pr stunt and then the driver crashed and the diamond was never found again. one time one of the most famous and successful drivers of all time got kidnapped and held hostage by cuban revolutionaries, which mostly consisted of him being taken to dinner and signing autographs, and afterwards he was very positive about them. it's just a ridiculous sport in so many ways and a filmmaker could do so much with it if they were willing to lean into that, rather than trying to let brad pitt live out his inane fantasies

He strikes me as the kind of guy who would pretend to have a crush on a girl because that's what he's supposed to do, right? And he doesn't understand why people make such a big deal out of it. love songs, romance movies, steamy novels, apparently everybody else is feeling some kind of feeling that Cloud just........ doesn't have access to. But he plays along with it. it's what's expected of him. It's not like there's any other options, as far as he knows.

but he's not interested in girls and he knows it, he just doesn't see anything odd about his obsession with SOLDIER. With Sephiroth. With these strong, confident men in their sleeveless tops and baggy pants and badass combat boots.

And when he finally gets to meet a real SOLDIER for the first time (Zack in CC), it's almost comical how Love At First Sight the scene is. What with its tender emotional orchestral swells and glittering snow and pretty-smiling hair-swooshing face reveal. Suddenly Cloud's got the giggles and he's trying to act all cool. then they're hanging out every chance they get. Cloud's inviting Zack to his hometown to meet his mom. somehow neither of them realize what's happening.

and it's over before it can even begin.

By AC, there are so many people who love Cloud dearly— whose love he feels unable to reciprocate because he never got the opportunity to learn what love is. He doesn't know that love is supposed to be more than just a sense of obligation. The way he sees it, he got a tiny taste of it one time, and it ruined his life and took the life of someone that, in hindsight, he loved.

Aragorn has Frodo and Sam who are super well behaved. Sam has an autograph book and Frodo is on Aragorn’s shoulders.

Boromir has Merry and Pippin who are on leashes and absolutely feral. The character actors are scared of them and Boromir is trying his best.

btvs season 7 episode 16 storyteller my beloved! episodes that start out really fun and zany but end up being surprisingly sad and poignant my beloved! reflections on the act of narration, on who is telling the story and what their perspective is my beloved! buffy being the badass speech giving girlboss general for most of the episode (because that's how andrew sees her) but then actually admitting how desperate and vulnerable she is to andrew of all people because she knows no one will believe him if he tells them about it my beloved! buffy refusing to let andrew deflect the guilt of murdering jonathan because if there's one thing buffy "you have a choice, you don't have a good choice but you have a choice!" summers can't stand it's people who refuse to take responsibility for their actions my beloved! andrew actually admitting that he murdered jonathan my beloved! the episode ending on andrew not being able to narrate to the camera anymore because he knows there's nothing he can say that can make it better my beloved!

season 7 mostly sucks but when it hits it hits okay
