I've been thinking a lot about how fandom attitudes towards female characters shift, and how a lot of the outright hatred that was once prevalent now is replaced by "girlboss" "mom friend" "only braincell" type discourse... and also about the Hawthorne twins and what I see of them in fandom vs canon.

It's interesting to me that I see a lot of what feels like a fandom desire to rehabilitate Dahlia as a character from a feminist perspective, sometimes taken as a given that her canon material was bad, when ...tbqh I don't really feel that she needs it. If I think of characters wronged by their canon text, Dahlia wouldn't make the list. Even a surface-level reading of Dahlia is, imo, a compelling character, with clear motivations, consistent behaviour, agency. She's funny and memorable. You can dig deeper into speculation and headcanon territory with Dahlia (and I totally get the impulse, she's great and there's lots of potential there) but I don't think you need to do that to make her a solid character, I think she already is. I don't think she's any less complex than the other trilogy villains, and if anything she's a lot more complex already than someone like Engarde, and on par with Von Karma.

On the other hand, I think Iris got some paper-thin writing as "the good twin" and, let's be honest, a feeble attempt to set up a heterosexual romance for Phoenix which gets dropped in subsequent games anyway. There are interesting possible complexities to tease out of Iris, just as with Dahlia; Iris facilitates or participates in some pretty messed-up things, but Phoenix and the story are very forgiving, which just flattens her out further into Good Twin. I don't think the canon is very interested in Iris outside of her role as plot twist doppelganger and occasional blush sprite... and mostly it seems the fanon Iris gets in response is to quadruple down on those things. She's pure and kind and sweet, besties with Phoenix, their relationship is cast as something wholesome and innocent, despite the uh objective reality of it.

What about the Iris who helps her sister plan harebrained criminal schemes only to back out at last second, the Iris who fell in love with Feenie despite herself and yet continued to lie and place him in danger for eight months, who watched Dahlia get a death sentence without ever coming clean ... Those things are the aspects that would make her a multidimensional character, imo, but they're ignored and/or glossed over in the story and (what I've seen of) fandom. And I don't say this to mean that she's evil or irredeemable or something, she isn't -- just that the basic fact of her actions is a lot messier than is usually acknowledged, by canon or fanon. For the canon I think the reasons are obvious and not flattering; for fandom, I think the intentions are generally positive, trying to correct for the opposite end of the spectrum (and 20 years ago the attitude was probably quite different), but I still wish female characters were given more space to be complicated in ways that include being kind of fucked up actually.

If it's not at least sort of hereditary, then how was she able to become the leader so young?? I mean, it's clearly not entirely so, but if it's not at least a little or is just more likely to be passed down because children of leaders get specialized training for it, then surely someone older would have been chosen instead? But in any case, it would explain Irida having no playmates as a kid, if she had a parent run away to be with a Diamond Clan member to make Volo her half-brother. It'd be such a scandal, and if she was young enough she might not have had strong enough friend bonds to weather that fallout. Assuming there were even many kids around her age anyway, most of the other adult Clan members only look about mid-twenties maybe, but that'd still make her quite a few years younger than them. Wait, to have Volo be as old as he is, they'd at the very least have to be born right around the same time, so even bigger scandal: her dad is the one who ran off while her mom was pregnant, because he found out his Diamond Clan mistress was also pregnant. (New au idea where she and Volo are actually twins that were separated when one of her parents ran off and took him with them, but neither of them know it. She and Ingo have a "leaders/bosses who were separated from their twin but don't even know they have a twin, much less who that twin is" bond.)

Yeah, Cogita's whole Thing was just kinda weird in general. I can see why you'd want to just avoid that entirely, especially if you found something that works better lol

I mean, who wouldn't want to live on an active volcano?? Or maybe she just lives with Iscan. That's how they got together, she took one look at that volcano and was like, hell no. Not that I think she'd want to live there anyway after her noble died. Oh that's true, it might still be a little contentious but I think that's an argument that'd work well on dissenters, especially the point that they're not damaging the original room, they're just adding onto it.

Do they know how to unfrenzy alphas at that point though? The only way to really do that I think is to catch them, and they don't use pokeballs even if Ingo somehow figured that out (since I don't think he goes around actually catching many, just his team). They didn't know how to calm the frenzied nobles at first, so they might not know how to help the gallade even if they wanted to, and that's assuming that it even works on alphas the same as it does the nobles. Maybe the reason it's in Snowpoint is so that it doesn't go around hurting more things. This way at least it's mostly isolated. 

How would that work for like Avalaugg, Electrode, and Basculegion? Or maybe it's not a requirement to go through with their noble, but it's an option if both parties agree? Especially if they don't already have a partner to help. 

Now that they know where they stand with him, all they ask is that he turn the crazy eyes down to at least a 7 when he's talking to them. And also, yes, they'd prefer if he would stop dying, it'd be pretty inconvenient to have to find another warden, and it's probably bad luck to let someone Almighty Sinnoh sent them die. They don't need divine wrath rained down upon them just because he has a delicate constitution.

"how did irida become leader so young" is something id like to know too tbqh. were she and palina like. literally the only available candidates? if that's so, and if the theory's true that lord arcanine died during the trials and that "failure" is what removed palina from consideration—but i feel like surely wardens aren't allowed to become clan leader?? like once you're warden that's it for life, surely, unless you do something so heinous that every other warden in the region agrees you've violated your duty and need to be outcast.

maybe, like the wardens are partly chosen by their nobles, the leader candidates are partly chosen by almighty sinnoh. there's some sort of test of approval that potential candidates have to undergo, maybe involving the lustrous, and then the leader is selected from among those. and if all the other candidates were eliminated, maybe irida just. won by default, despite being so young. (and that would add another layer to adaman's whole Thing, if leaders are typically chosen by sinnoh—and either it marked him but still refuses to acknowledge him, or it has marked nobody and he was chosen as leader by the clan despite sinnoh's silence but there's still something illegitimate about his status. mm love the vibes of that second one actually.)

(either way, though, i still don't think wardens can be leaders?? wtf is the timeline of palina becoming a warden?? CAN wardens be leaders?? then why didn't they just choose calaba??)

yeah, i feel like, if it is true that there was a war or some other disaster that all but wiped out that middle generation of the clans, irida belongs to sort of an awkward time where there weren't many/any other kids bc the older adults were gone and most of the survivors hadn't grown up enough to have kids of their own. i feel like another possibility is that volo is older than irida by a few years but actually spent the first few years of his life living with the diamond clan, until his parents finally couldn't take the fighting anymore and both ran away, his father leaving behind an unborn half-sister he may or may not have ever known existed. (or, the same thing, but he's lived in the guild his entire life—his mother left diamond for the guild when he was born, but it took a few years for her to convince his father to do the same, and irida was conceived in the meantime.) the idea of them being twins is really fascinating actually. that also means that irida just has perpetual babyface and/or volo looks older than he is ghskshj

i think defeating alphas in battle is also a valid way to unfrenzy them? especially since that's what mai asks you to do with the first one you face (you CAN catch it but it's not required). and yeah agreed that ingo probably only catches his main team permanently, he might use pokeballs as a method to transport other ones but he releases them right afterwards. (i have been thinking that he's probably befriended a ton of pokemon via his warden duties, and could theoretically call on them for battle, but they just. don't want to be Caught, and his main six are just the ones he's closest to. yanno) but oh that's an interesting thought that they've isolated the gallade in snowpoint for safety, but still wouldn't they be worried about it damaging the temple?

mm yeah you're right it probably is more of an optional thing than a required one. the nobles could probably also use their status with the wild pokemon in their region to find a partner, if temporary, for their warden, too. if they haven't befriended one yet.

i rly enjoy it when there are hints to specific monster schools outside of monster high that cater to one kind of monster. i couldnt quite makeout what the twins were saying but it sounded like "meowton academy"? i remember in g1 there was some stuff abt dracula wanting to send draculaura to a vampire specific academy iirc. i like details like that because like for one thing i like knowing there are other academic options in the monster world besides this one school, plus it sorta established monster high as a place thats notable for its inclusion of multiple different species learning together under one roof which feels in line with like the core messaging of the series and would both make sense for why young monsters might want to go there over other schools, as well as for why older monsters more set in their ways might be antsy about sending their kids there if they hadnt graduated from there themselves.

since it came up yesterday: syd isn't actually exclusive with anyone @ perceives, as our wonderful mutual mutual meg also writes laura. i understand the confusion since we come in a little ship-ready package a lot of the time, and we do write together a lot here! but the concept of mains just seems kind of snotty to me tbqh --- if it doesn't merit setting apart as The Only Way You'll Accept it seems just about as practical as a friendship bracelet? i'd rather encourage potential duplicates of canon muses, because i feel like that's half the fun of writing canon-based material to begin with. i love seeing other people's takes on things! you literally just never know what might happen and i think that is wonderful [and strange]!

the only relevant note i'll make (that i will also add to my exclusives page) is that we've done a lot of work regarding laura's relationship with sarah, sarah in general because i am obsessed with her, and judy. because of this --- and how Mother/Daughter Issues are so so prominent in The Narrative --- i probably would not engage with another sarah (and if i did, i would be careful not to share my pre-established takes on things that are out of laura's hands). i don't foresee this as a problem as people don't really write 1) Actual Adult Characters or 2) twin peaks characters in general all that much, but! basically, if you're a huge sucker for Development Work and we are mutuals, i would do the thing with you. if not, consider syd's sarah as a one-way exclusive.

aka I’ve been seeing a few flavors of people exhausted by several of the most popular podcasts around here being pretty dark right now & I have attempted to put together a tasting menu of some stuff I think might help alleviate that burnout (& which also deserves some more love)

1. I'm okay with stuff that’s still on the dark or macabre side, I'd just like something that isn’t 100% characters I care about suffering horribly all the time, maybe some laughs in there

The Beef and Dairy Network: Like a seriously disturbing body horror podcast, except British satirical comedy! About cows! You kind of have to listen to it to get what’s going on tbqh it’s nearly impossible to explain but if you like horror and are just tired of being depressed about it maybe try this one. NOT for the easily nauseated.

Wooden Overcoats: black comedy sitcom about two rival funeral homes on a small island, one run by The Most Perfect Man On Earth (tm) and the other run by two misanthropic twins with a knack for disaster (and their hypercompetent assistant (and a mouse who wants to be an author)). this one is about watching the protagonist suffer horribly all the time but like, this time it’s usually a lot funnier and honestly he deserves it

Death by Dying: (so far very short) dark comedy about the resident obituary writer of idyllic Crestfall, Idaho, who sets out to tell the stories of how the town’s residents died and ends up uncovering a lot of other things, like conspiracies, and man-eating cats, and a poet’s vanishing childhood home, and what his friend the Angel of Death isn’t telling him about what’s in the dark woods. has very strong ASOUE or Pushing Daisies vibes, that sort of dark whimsy and really distinct narrative voice

Arden: “true crime” comedy-ish mystery podcast feat. two of the best bickering hosts anywhere and a whole third host called homoerotic tension, trying to solve a decade-old Hollywood mystery. secretly a shakespeare adaptation. one of the hosts is michelle agresti. an airline run by killer robots is involved, somehow. it’s a perfect storm

2. I’m good with some plot and higher stakes, but I need something more kind and hopeful right now:

Middle:Below: 10-minute episodes about a man who travels between the worlds of the living and the dead to solve the problems of restless ghosts, and the three friends he does it with -- a ghost, a cat, and a writer. their tagline is “remember: bad things will happen.” this is basically a lie, this show is extremely sweet

Alba Salix: high fantasy medical workplace comedy about hospital staff in a fairytale-ish kingdom, namely one grouchy witch, one distracted fairy, and one extremely disgruntled teenager sentenced to community service. also comes with the miniseries The Axe And Crown, which is about a gay troll bartender, his clueless landlord, and his bombastic niece, and also is one of the most heartfelt touching pieces of audio fiction I’ve ever heard?

Dark Ages: also a high fantasy workplace comedy, but in this one the dysfunctional cast work at a magical natural history museum, which thanks to recent events is now hosting the mythical Dark Lord on top of all the usual problems caused by their complete incompetency.

Solutions to Problems: a sci-fi relationship advice show feat. human host Janet and alien host Loaf. also feat. banter, illegal time travel, what to do when the AI that controls the air you breathe is your on-again-off-again girlfriend, and how to avoid your many spouses when they insist you need to come back to the homeworld and spend some time with your spawn.

Victoriocity: steampunk buddy-comedy mystery show, in which misanthropic detective Archibald Fleet (aka Tom Crowley but he’s grouchy this time) and intrepid newbie journalist Clara Entwhistle (aka an absolute ray of sunshine) uncover some Secret Plots within the government of a very different victorian london. if you like the “opposing personalities come to care deeply about one another as friends” trope this one is for you

Inn Between: not an actual play, but a show about the developing relationships of a party of RPG-esque adventurers as they rest at the inn between campaigns. you don’t see the adventures, just the crew growing closer and learning about one another in their moments of peace.

The Strange Case of Starship Iris: sci-fi adventure about a stranded biologist and a ragtag crew of smugglers who set out to resist an authoritarian government, solve a mystery, and prevent a second human-alien war. as far as I can tell their plan for accomplishing this is to be as funny, gay, and adorable as possible, and to dismantle oppressive systems via the power of found family tropes. also via the power of linguistics.

3. just give me the fluffiest, funniest, sweetest, most relaxed, lowest-stakes thing you have:

Everything is Alive: meditative, deeply touching show where Guy From Public Radio holds interviews with inanimate objects. the interviews are super genuine and beautiful and I think they’re improvised, or at least they sound very natural? for people who want to be profoundly moved by a can of generic brand cola (you may not know but you are one of those people)

Standard Docking Procedure: a self-described “hopepunk” scifi sitcom about a group of employees on a space station, dealing with the little daily misadventures of difficult tourists, traffic control disasters, nonexistent love lives, and each other. Has an explicitly stated purpose of staying happy, lighthearted, and comforting.

Love and Luck: tied for absolute most heartwarming audio drama in existence. the story of the relationship between two Australian men, told through voicemail messages, as they fall in love, start a cafe, build a supportive and loving local queer community of close-knit friends and chosen family who help one another through thick and thin, and also find out that they can do magic apparently (IMPORTANT NOTE: there are some darker events and themes tackled in the plot starting around the latter half of the first season, but the focus of the story itself is always on how people support and help one another through trauma and difficulty, and the explicitly stated core premise of the show is that every character will have a happy ending and be okay.)

Quid Pro Euro: Look Around You-esque satire of old 80s and 90s instructional tapes where Felix Trench tells you what the European Union will look like in the far-off year of 2000. I don’t know anything about the European Union but I cackle like a witch when I listen to this

The Cryptonaturalist: I know you’ve seen his tweets. well it’s that but a podcast. just a man with an extremely nice voice talking about fantastical creatures like salamanders that swim through parking lot asphalt or foxes that roam the shelves of libraries at night. in between he reads poetry and generally talks about nature in the most beautiful way you could imagine. this show feels like a peaceful walk in the woods.

The Hidden Almanac: a podcast made 90% out of gentle fantasy worldbuilding, as a somewhat grumpy man in a plague doctor mask tells you about the history of his world and distributes gardening advice. has an immense archive of four-minute long episodes. it’s best to listen in order, because there is continuity, and be aware that about the first year or so has dropped off most feeds. written and performed by much-loved fantasy writer and artist Ursula Vernon and her husband Kevin.

Startripper!!: the other forerunner for most heartwarming audio drama in existence. seriously, you cannot imagine how much joy Startripper!! will bring into your life. it’s just the travelogue of one little alien with a heart full of enthusiasm and love setting out to see the universe and making friends along the way with just about everyone he meets, including his extremely loveable spaceship AI. I really mean it. listen to this show if you listen to nothing else.

Cabin Pressure: BBC radio workplace comedy about the dysfunctional crew of the world’s smallest airline. not only utterly hilarious but will tug on your heartstrings more than you could possibly imagine (this does not look at first like a found family story but it so very much is). warning for bendytoots cucumberpatch but like, in the one and only valid role he’s ever played. you definitely cannot find this show by searching its name on the Internet Archive.

Ok but what is it about 3b that people dislike it so much 👀

The problem with 3b is not that in and of itself it is necessarily so much worse than any other season, or any other show, or whatever. The problem with 3b is it set up a whole bunch of really interesting character and lore and plot beats and then ignored all of them.

It’s like... The first two X-Men movies, (umm, 20 years ago? OH DEAR LORD, I’m old, whatever, I started this comparison I’m gonna keep going) were way better than anyone expected. And then the third movie was such a crock of bullshit in terms of the way it treated its characters that people are still mad about it (11 years later!) in a way they wouldn’t have been if those first two movies hadn’t raised the bar. (See also: asking me or the husband about Smallville or DC’s The New 52 timeline even now years after they’re both over because WTF DC. We have a lot of Superman opinions, just saying.)

But anyways! Back to Shadowhunters.

JIA AND ALEC had a really beautiful couple of prickly scenes together and then... nothing. She was nothing and nothing happened and also she’s terrible at her job because apparently Aldertree is a criminal mastermind and she’s clueless? WHAT (ALSO the whole trying to resurrect Valentine? As a single event that does nothing to anything else? THAT IS NOT A THING WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES, wtf. I’m gonna say wtf a lot in this, jsyk. Jia was so ruthless and interesting when dealing with Clary and then. Nope. Nothing.)

THE CLAVE IN GENERAL. Is apparently terrifying and torturing people but actually no they’re just incompetent and it’s Aldertree again. *shrug emoji*

The scene with Maia & Alec about Heidi was actually pretty well done, but it required so much bullshit to get there, so many things that Izzy did and apparently... never told either her brother or The Head of the Institute and then... no consequences for that either? COME ON.

MAIA IN GENERAL. She deserved a proper arc that wasn’t more about Jordan than her. She deserved to be involved in the rest of the Shadow World, to be active and doing things and being the Alpha that Luke couldn’t be, rather than just being attacked and abused and neglected over and over and over again.

Speaking of characters that deserved better: RAPHAEL.

Raphael & Magnus had a beautiful scene together right at the beginning of 3a... and then nothing else! Not when Raphael overstepped with Heidi, not when he got exiled, not when he got turned human (which would have tied in with Magnus’ plot line! IT WAS RIGHT THERE?!? SAME THING BUT NOT? SUCH A GOOD cONTRAST liek wt-ACTUAL-FUCKERY.)

Magnus & the Downworld in general. They’d made a big point about how he was very tied into all these other people, felt responsible for them, and then they were just all gone. for no reason except to make him more sad. Which, fine, if you want to make his story one about isolation, but you have to show how we got there. WHERE’s CAT? Where are all the Warlocks who survived that attack back in S1 when Magnus was sheltering them? (Where’s the Council that apparently fired Magnus? You can’t bring something like that up and then just... NOTHING IT. Well. I mean. Obviously you can because they did but it’s stupid.)

THE TWINNING RUNE

Jonathan in 3b is an entirely different character and contradicts half of what we saw in 3a which means he doesn’t make sense and it makes me mad because he could have been so amazing (And I honestly think Luke Baines did an amazing performance as someone who doesn’t know How To Human but wants to, but then the plot kept framing him as some terrifying villain when really he was just trying to run away and find a big pointy to scare people with so no one would follow him and that could have been a great story but while that was the character he was portraying that wasn’t the plot they put him in and the contrast made both things look stupid rather than poignant.)

Also Clary under the twinning rune should have still been Clary, so her “evil” should have been self-righteous and breaking the world to do what she wanted (because that’s what she does anyways) rather than, what, weird and flirty? She absolutely should have been protecting her brother, because that’s what Clary wants at the end of the day, but she should have been doing it like Clary, not like an echo of Jonathan’s issues.

It’s supposed to be an Evil!Parabatai Rune on Steroids, right? So maybe compare it to the actual parabatai we’ve got right here in front of us?!

GIVE ME PARABATAI STUFF (especially if you’re going to use it for a Clary & Izzy beat near the end, which I loved tbqh, but it... doesn’t make a lot of sense because we don’t know what that means.)

Or I kind of enjoy the fact that Jace is suddenly over most of his issues BUT I had to figure out why i thought that worked, the show didn’t give it to me.

Mainly though.

Most people don’t like 3b because one of the core plot/character threads is of course Magnus losing his magic... and none of that plot is actually centered on Magnus, on letting Magnus process it, on Magnus doing anything... which is even worse than it sounds because 3x11 made it look like it was going to do it right. Magnus stands up to Iris without magic. Magnus accepts Alec’s help, Magnus says he’s not okay and Alec gets it... and then in 3x12 they contradict all of that. ALL OF IT. GONE. *ARGH* It was right there, they started it right and then. NOPE. Magnus lies and avoids and Alec is sad and Alec acts and Asmodeus acts and Magnus is sad and that’s it. It could have been amazing! and it wasn’t!

HE STABBED HIMSELF WITH EYELINER? Like, this is a really minor scene, but that’s something he clearly knows how to do even if he usually did it with magic, he’s got multiple character beats in earlier seasons about how he likes to do things by hand, to linger in physical, tangible action, that he knows magic is sometimes a short-cut and he doesn’t always use it AND YET. SOMEONE THOUGHT THAT WAS CUTE SO THEY FORGOT EVERYTHING ELSE?!?

And to be fair the conversation is good, the cheek kiss is good, it’s really just that one tiny detail that breaks it, and 3b is full of a lot of tiny details that break what could have been really good. Again, it’s the contrast, it’s getting so close and then not doing it right that’s so frustrating.

coni and fema are peyton’s pseudo-twins………. the working theory was that peyton and penny wanted to do the whole family thing but like the gay got a little in the way so peyton begged barnaby to be a donor (strong genes) so both peyton and penny ended up with a twin (strONG GENES) but there is no way in azkaban or beyond that peyton would ever give birth

tbqh coni and fema are generally super embarrassed by their parents bc they are super overly affectionate and “no one understands them the way they understand each other”

3. Which relative do they resemble the most? Why?

coni is like a dead ringer for a peyton/barnaby combo; he’s got that strong jaw but peyton’s complexion (and big ole eyes)

but fema barely looks like barnaby at all and looks a lot more like penny’s side of the family

Your fics makes me wonder what would have happened if both stans had been in the bubble. Would the bubble have separated them and tried to trick them with a different brother or would it had given them other fulfilled wishes besides each other? What would your take on it be?

my instinctive thought to this was them all being inside the tower and one of them getting the dreambubble twin first and some general embarrassment disguised as ‘Thing’s busted’ or a snidy comment at the other, onLY for the next one right up to be the other one and now you just got a horribly awkward and uncomfortably charged room 

i’m trying to remember if i ever actually posted my theory on how the dream bubble actually worked and i’m gonna put it under the bottom at the cut

anyways though, i think stan and ford would naturally separate after the tower scene with mabel (due to them fighting over the apprenticeship seemingly being what “allowed this to happen”)

now - personally, and i cant believe youve asked this me this question bc nOW i may wind up doing it but, i’d say after the stans naturally split up there’d still be a fake brother sent to each one.

i think though the bubble may adapt a bit to the situation and... mm i’m currently split between the dreambubble ford (kind of like db!wendy) pretending/leading on as being the real one and going on for a bit like that OR admitting upfront that ‘well yes i did come from this bubble’ but still going on as such

dreambubble stan meanwhile - still like the hopeful approach but hey call me a sucker i’d def write in a sort of extra deviousness where the db!stan subtly points out how the fam is still mad at him and insinuations (never fully said out loud) that maybe... it would be better for them as a whole if he just went somewhere else for a bit with the sailing proposition said out with the additional caveat of “besides might be good to let all of them let out a bit of steam for a bit”

stan would mostly stick around mabel trying to talk with her, ford trying to gather up everyone. definitely bits where ford avoids the kids which works out with the effort of trying to separate him from the party, if i went with db!ford pretending to be the real slim shady so to speak then definitely a scene with stan finally realizing it (or even just realizing it from the beginning but i do like the opposing situation where 1 set is told from the get go and the other set finds out). 

i reALLY like the db iterations of stan and ford to not use them tbqh

between the db stan who’s traits and stuff gradually wear ford down over time and exposure, and db ford who really just seems harmless like any other mabeland creation, just supportive and there for you until suddenly when it’s trying to get stan to stay and stan sees right through it

kind of something i’d like about the fic though is that despite there being these 2 adults, they wind up not actually helping out the situation due to their own well... bickering with each other and winding up trying to ‘fix this’ themselves rather than as a united front 

as for the sort of resolution... i don’t know. course i’m a sucker though and i’d like mabel and dipper pushing the stan twins to talk (post bubble popping) and they wind up talking about what happened while they were in mabeland and find out that they wind up with alternates of each other and “you wouldn’t believe it, it kept trying to get me to go sailing” / “psh, yeah right, i don’t think you ever wanted to go sailing, ha.” / “no, i did, but... well that’s not going to happen is it” --leading into thEM actually reconciling somewhat

--- to break the dream bubble theory down quick , i believe that the dream bubble operates essentially on its own and its main goal is to just keep the Prisoner(tm) inside, no matter what methods it takes. hence why it catered to everybody else’s desires and turned on dipper at the ‘you’re not real’ bit with dreambubble wendy and.... upon eventually losing its hold on mabel turned from trying to keep her there via charm/honey switching to more physically detaining her

and with that in mind - essentially i think the bubble’s goal is to assimilate people that would try to take mabel away (also further adding incentive to keep mabel inside) and get rid of anybody that not only couldn’t be convinced to stay but also convinces her to leave ~~aka like dipper in canon after the trial~~

If you wrote the epilogue for Artemis (or any of the charas tbqh) ten or fifteen years after the series, what are some of the things that you headcanon/would make canon in terms of character development + everyone's futures?

Hoo boy, this is something I’ve been thinking of for quite a while.

Artemis: Alive, mentally sound, emotionally stable, probably living part of the year with his family. Is the first human ambassador to the fairies, assists his father in running the company. Doesn’t plan to take over Fowl Inc anytime soon. I’ve never looked into the romantic aspect of his future - whatever it becomes, I just want him to be happy.

Holly: She’s all set to be the first female Commander of Recon. Probably in a committed relationship or not (never thought much of that either), visits the Fowls as often as she can. Oversees the Dept of Human Elf Cooperation.

Foaly: Still tech head at LEP; is grooming Mayne for the role. His own kid is super into tech, but he’s on the entrepreneurial side of things. Plans to become a professor at Haven U once he leaves the LEP.

Butler: He’s still Artemis’ bodyguard, but his role is a lot less taxing now. Owns a farm. Is happy and generally not stressed.

Juliet: She is assigned to the twins and loves it, and her girlfriend run an inclusive sports clothing brand.

Myles: Will run Fowl Inc full time after his dad. Grew closer to his brothers after the whole cloning fiasco, especially to Artemis. He’s currently studying in the States at the same place as Beckett. Has a boyfriend he’s a little scared to bring to his crazy ass family.
