Small town America is a torture chamber

Parents move to small rural towns so they can have total control of their children.

Control their flow of information, isolate them, abuse them.

No friends, no boyfriend, no fun.

Police and school likely to ignore abuse, or be ill-informed about the signs.

Deny kids opportunities, and a life.

Most of the neighbors are just as shitty. Most of the kids you’re in school with are also isolated and clueless about how badly they’re being abused, how abnormal their home life is.

Effortlessly, the small town silences victims and keeps them imprisoned. Psychopaths are allowed to get away with bad behavior while the authorities turn a blind eye; here, more so than other places, the abuser is allowed to win; and this impresses on the victim that the victim always loses, a warped lesson that may fuck with their head for the rest of their life.

A horrid display of quiet, lock-tight order, small town America.

And all disguised with a wreath of nice foliage.

Here, do not expect reason to prevail. Do not expect the truth to out. Not until it is too late. Or until after you are gone.

Thoughts about association. In light of the Neil Gaiman article today, and previously too with anyone else who falls from grace (/were never in a position to be looked up to anyway), there start to be citizen investigations into who all is still 'associating' with the perpetrator. I've seen people talking about going through Neil Gaiman's followers to note/harass/condemn anyone who still follows them.

And honestly, I don't think following is a very good metric of association. I know, we place importance on the act of unfollowing and all of that, but like news journalists must continue to follow the vilest people on the planet, because have to keep up with current developments. Journalists can't unfollow Donald Trump, he's going to be the literal president. For other reasons too, people may want to keep up with a developing story, or know responses, especially where there's a chance they might get deleted under fire. Sometimes I don't even remember that I'm actively following a specific celebrity; our algorithms have a way of just pushing whatever the fuck they want you to see whether or not you follow an account, so it's not unreasonable to think you're not following someone even if you see their posts because that's just what algorithms do.

This time, I've seen people wondering whether stars of Gaiman's TV series would unfollow him, and whether or not they'd be 'bad people' or 'implicitly supporting him' by not doing so. But does that really make sense? Don't you think that say, if Michael Sheen or David Tennant were asked about something Neil Gaiman said, they'd rather first know what he said so they can be prepared to talk about it, rather than like, sitting in an interview going 'oh, what did he say?' and having to make shit up from there. Or forget interviews, even. Of course, if they're on a PR outing, they will absolutely be briefed beforehand. But they have private lives beyond what you and I read about, surely they'll be keeping an eye on it as people who think they know the man well and have worked with him?

Information isn't the enemy, that's all I'm saying. I also don't think performing angelic ignorance and purging yourself of any outward association is going to do much. What I'm saying is, the Neil Gaiman Vulture story had me clamping a hand to my mouth in shock throughout, it's absolutely sickening, but I don't think people following or unfollowing him is that significant. His following obviously won't drop to 0 from this, but also I'd be more concerned with real-world consequences in this case. Networks dropping him and his shows, that matters more to me than whether David Tennant still follows Neil Gaiman. Even if in this specific case I don't imagine Gaiman is going to say too much, there are other instances where people will be busy on social media either doing damage control or digging their own grave deeper. Information isn't the enemy. That's the talkings of book-banners that think you can 'sin' by association or knowledge of 'bad things' or people.

I'm sick and fucking tired of all the "hopefully a meteor hits Earth so we don't have to deal with this" jokes. I'm especially tired of Americans acting like if the US falls, the whole world ends. How fucking self-centered can you be? Even if the US were eradicated, the rest of the world would still exist.

Just because you're still caught up in the brainwashing from your history classes, and YOU aren't ready to put in the work to confront your part in white supremacy and the things that led us here today... that doesn't mean the answer is to throw up your hands and imply everyone should die. And you know what else? The US is NOT fucking over. If you think it's over, then YOU specifically associated it with awful, awful things. If you can't fathom what needs to change in this country and what YOU need to do to start changing it, then it's time to get out of your bubble. Follow just ONE person who looks different than you online. Someone who's just living their daily fucking life. We're still so segregated, but you can get online and seek out information beyond your bubble.

Many Americans are discovering for the first time how the American government is ACTUALLY supposed to work. Don't stop there. Go find out that many of the rights you have were won for you by Black trans women. One of the most oppressed groups in society fought for EVERY LGBTQ person's rights - not just their own. When shit got hard, when the world got fucking scary, did they say "well fuck it, let's just throw up our hands and give up because it's too hard"? No!

This "end times" mentality is leftover evangelical Christian Revelations bullshit. What's happening in America right now isn't the apocalypse. Change and replacing the system we have will be hard. There will be growing pains - THESE ARE GROWING PAINS. The cracks in the system are being HELLA exposed, and millions of people who were putting their hands over their ears going "lalalalala" can't anymore.
