Jinsik is clingy, isn’t shy about wanting to hold your hand or initiate skinship with you, so when he’s unable to simply be by your side in the game he’s a little restless, so eager to get back to you asap which is why he’s so strict with Yechan, always trying to keep him in line, because it means they could collect what they came for faster and get out sooner. Admittedly he becomes a little selfish… jealous in a sense from hearing the others talk to you about something he doesn’t understand because he doesn’t have the context, all he knows is that he wants to talk to you too :(

Sumin’s really bad for being ‘forgetful’, but it’s really all a ploy so he can come back through the portal to see you. And the two of you will venture out to collect what he needs together because if you’re helping him it’ll cut down the time by half, well… from what Jinsik knows at least. Yechan a lot of the time gets distracted whilst wandering around with the other 2 and often ends up always somehow getting into a little trouble whilst entering fortresses, bastion remnants, literally anywhere dangerous by himself for the sake of getting you cool stuff. One of the loudest people in the party besides Junmin, always shrieking and screaming when a mob starts attacking him, partially kicks up the dramatics because he likes hearing you laugh when he’s scared/the silly arguments when Sumin scolds him for running off without them, runs to you when you’re present asking for help because he knows Sumin won’t be mean when you’re around.

Junmin, Yujun, and Seeun are the aforementioned mining team! The 3 who are especially deprived of your companionship because once they get to work there’s hardly time for them to leave the underground tunnels and vast expanse of caves they come across. It helps when you’re able to run them food and extra wood so they can make sticks for torches, they steal you when they can, showing you the cool places they’ve found and the pretty material they think you’d like!

Junmin is mostly by himself for a good amount of time because he’s the one who is closest to the surface, only going so deep into the ground to collect coal, iron, red stone, lapis. He enjoys hearing your thoughts on how to sort out the chests and their contents, especially when you offer to help him with rearranging everything for easier access. He makes for a nice conversation, tells you that if you need help with building anything that he’s your guy! Also offers to go out and find pretty flowers/seeds for your garden, the type to show up with the most random gifts for you, and you’re just “How did you find this” and he just tells you not to worry about it, that he’ll find even more if you want!

oh im so glad you picked up on that too! theyre literally ideological foils to each other in that episode: even as they bond over some shared values and trauma (and attraction), the key conflict between them is that gwaine's life experiences have made him a staunch anti-royalist while merlin is prophecy-pilled into believing he lucked out with "the good ones". from the moment merlin learns gwaine's dad was a knight he relentlessly uses this fact to convert gwaine back to catholicism nobility so he can stick around as a knight of camelot, which merlin rationalizes as a kindness because gwaine seems lonely and leads a dangerous life.

but the way gwaine reacts to merlin's attempts at persuasion is conflicted and suspicious because "what's this guy's agenda?" and i don't think that ever fully lets up. even as gwaine concedes that arthur is one of "the good ones" i do believe it's just for merlin's sake because there are no "good ones" in a class war lol he sees how rooted merlin is in his beliefs (not to mention the repressed sexuality) and wants to reassure him that even though he's in no rush to join him, he's not judging him either. and merlin is relieved and happy with this outcome because gwaine kindly didn't call him out on the homosexuality and he stopped trying to threaten his beliefs. that whole episode is the equivalent of being a leftist on a dating app in 2022 wondering how low you'd stoop for a cute british twink that's unironically mourning queen elizabeth. but i digress.

merwaine is toxic yaoi to ME because not only does it start with them butting heads ideologically, merlin's ideology WINS and gwaine abandons everything he stood for to become a knight in the hopes of finding love and community. and then of course by the time s4 and s5 roll in there is so much grief and shame and fanaticism in merlin that he refuses to indulge, refuses to go off-script and allow gwaine to be anything except a tool and a weapon. which is obviously not the vibe gwaine was getting off of merlin in s3, but by his last episode he's surrendered himself to the reality that that's all merlin allows himself to want from him to the point where after merlin rejects him one last time he literally gives him his sword and lets him walk away. grim!

then again, they're both complicit in making each other feel worse! gwaine sounds like he already has some mistrust of magic when we first meet him, and by s5 he's parroting camelot-isms about magic, "you are a sorcerer and a heretic", and killing sorcerers who did nothing. and then merlin quietly marks their grave and keeps repeating to himself that "it'll get better one day" while refusing to listen to anyone who has any criticism whatsoever.

and to circle back to the point of "they figured each other out": THAT'S WHY IT'S SO POTENT. TO ME. merlin knows that gwaine loves him best of all but whenever gwaine tries to act on his love merlin recoils because of catholic fanaticism he's convinced everyone he shares his secrets with will die. the repression is off the charts. and gwaine resents repression but he's forced to abide by it because he's disarmed by merlin's apparent selflessness and bravery (and the fact that merlin gets to live a life of adventure and self righteous fighting while not actually being a noble - that's literally gwaine's dream!) but i simply cannot look at gwaine in honestly ANY of the seasons he's in and go "oh he doesn't mind :) he just wants to be involved!" the man practically died of a broken heart. merlin broke his heart. and gwaine let him, he was also an active participant! i like to overanalyze eoin's acting decisions and try and pinpoint moments where he bites his tongue lest he says something that goes against merlin's (and the show's) ideology that will cost him his place. which is not unlike hiding a secret identity if you think about it

MAJOR BABEL SPOILERS AHEAD //

cohortswap is basically an au eren @chromathesia came up with where griffin and robin swap places in the story; robin is now the older golden child gone astray, and griffin is now the younger second failure. and the rest of the cohorts get swapped with them!

we have a lore doc that is like over 14 pages long but we are keeping the full thing under wraps for now because eren is writing a massive fic they don't want to spoil too early lmaooo

some foundational deets:

ramy still dies... so sorry. except in this case he and robin planned to run and leave babel for the hermes society together (the um. romantic eloping is implied but unfortunately i don't think either of them get a real chance to act on it), and they plan for victoire to stay behind to keep leaking information out to them. letty finds out and betrays them the same way; calling the cops and barging in with a gun and. yeah. except this time, because it happens outside their dorm rooms, robin manages to escape, and drags ramy's body across half of oxford to bury him in the garden of the old library. he is deeply deeply fucked up from this

professor lovell doesn't die... so sorry. furious about robin's betrayal, he blames it on robin being corrupted by spending too long in his home country, and rips griffin out of china early. but he realises very quickly that griffin isn't fluent in chinese and can barely hold a candle to robin's talent. he never tells griffin about robin but very much takes it all out on griffin, who grows up feeling compared to a ghost his whole childhood. when he first meets robin it all clicks, and he can't help but resent his older brother for the hell he got put through

to save herself, victoire sucks up to letty, tells her that she almost got hooked by hermes and wants out and to put it behind them after everything, and letty is so desperate to believe it that she pulls all her strings to vouch for her and keep her safe. victoire remains at babel and she keeps working covertly with hermes under letty's nose. my comic was about letty and victoire first seeing griffin in babel, and mistaking him for robin. letty doesnt take it well lmao but also in her bullheaded stubbornness starts to treats griffin as her second chance to prevent robin's "mistakes" from happening again lollll

so that's like the general premise! here's some other fun deets:

robin is... severely depressed but is determined to follow through on hermes' work and not give himself an easy out like ramy implied. griffin is so desperately eager for more of hermes when he finds out, but robin keeps him at an arms' length for ages because he's literally been wanting to die for years and is not prepared or willing to have a little brother to look after now. they end up butting heads more often than not and it's a very strained relationship (as griffin and robin's relationship is in canon)

when griffin fails his silver-working test, it's because robin tries to help offhand by giving him a matchpair he came up with. griffin can't get it to work in the exam, but worst of all, chakravarti recognises it as robin's work. he doesn't report griffin for it since he's also a part of hermes, but he tries to give griffin a second chance to come up with his own, and griffin can't, so he fails. up until that point griffin had been trying to hide from robin how little he knew, so the look on robin's face when griffin next sees him is unbearable, like, the mix of pity and anger that griffin didn't tell him, the disappointment that griffin wasn't the connection to robin's culture he wanted, the guilt that robin let lovell rip someone else out of their home, and now griffin knows exactly what letting down an older brother feels like. but it all happens in the half second before robin squashes it all down and gets down to business because there are more important things to worry about and maybe it's good that can't get caught up in griffin's life like this. to quote eren: "i think the worst part to griffin would be that robin just treats it like a setback. like okay, that's one less tool for you to use, you'll have to make up for that deficiency somewhere, moving on, when he wants robin to react as though it's personal to him that griffin doesn't measure up because it should be, because griffin's not good enough for their father (and robin always rolls his eyes when griffin tries to claim lovell and griffin knows why but lies to himself that he doesn't) so he must not be good enough to this tarnished golden child, the prodigal son that lovell tried to recreate. but no, he's just slightly more ineffectual gear within the revolution now, that's a slight hiccup at best and not an entire childhood snatched away from a boy whose clearest memory of canton is the smell of sesame oil in a wok" 

robin warns griffin about recruiting evie very early on, but doesn't tell him about letty or ramy for a long while because the wound is still fresh. griffin still persists, and robin is forced to whisk griffin out of babel after he kills evie. and he's just a mess whispering "you were right you were right im sorry im so sorry" because robin told him this could happen, but he let love and idealism cloud his judgments with evie, and robin has NEVER seen griffin like this, and any angry berating about griffin's stupid misjudgments die on his lips

griffin/anthony is so so very real. anthony is recruited by victoire separately, so griffin isn't even aware for a while and i think anthony actually held off on telling griffin bc of how close he was with sterling LOL. griffin and sterling had something insane going on at first, with sterling trying to be genuinely sympathetic to griffin's plight as an attempt to distinguish himself from his uncle's legacy, before the years drive them apart and griffin becomes aware that everything sterling conceded to him was merely lipservice. anthony and griffin get really close after they realise the other is already apart of hermes and post-evie as well. eren writes sterling as a critique of armchair radicals who see a sliver of violent liberation in practice and easily revert back into believing that the oppressed are savages. evie is a critique of white woman tears <3 i do believe she cries every time someone called her out for saying anything a little racist

yeah um there is way more and we both have comic/fic wips we're working on for the au but i will end this post here because it got so insanely long christ above. thank you so much for the question though i have soooo many thoughts about cohortswap au it's been absolutely taking over my brain

1. matthew definitely caught feels first, like always, because that’s just his curse in life lmfao. especially with older men of course. matt confesses!! he just can’t hold all this love in inside of him!! tolys falls harder but it’s also harder for him to express it, at first.

2. who’s more likely to confront the other? this is a FUN one. bc it leads to 99% of their angst in this ship >:) they’re both such anxious-attachment people pleasers who have been taught that speaking up gets you nowhere and/or worse off than you were before, so they tend to hold things in. as a concrete answer, it would end up being tolys, because tolys just has more years experience of bottling things up and matthew eventually gets passive aggressive and salty, and liet has been working on not accepting mean behavior that’s unwarranted. so he will confront matt when he gets too grumpy, and they’ll sort out the issue that way (usually with matt feeling bad for acting that way in hindsight, he’s so stupid)

3. I can totally see Pol third wheeling them lmfao!! he thinks because he’s an old friend he has more right to tolys’s time than some random kid. he likes butting in! matt thinks he’s funny, if not a bit intimidating. As for Gil, I really like making lietprucan a poly ship, so absolutely! he also “”third wheels”” in their bed 😊

4. I think they both watch each other while they sleep, tbh. but tolys does way way more often, because matt is such a sleepyhead, while tolys is late to bed and early to rise. matt also will nap literally anywhere, so tolys gets a lot of opportunities to watch his lover. Matthew does get small moments where he’s awake and tolys isn’t, though, and theyre always treasured. it’s so rare to see tolys rest peacefully and feel safe enough to do so around another. it always makes matt smile

5. matt gets nightmares fairly often, comes with his anxiety and depression more than it does trauma really. he doesn’t do well being alone, so he really needs to be cuddled and told it’s okay, it’s not real. he gets really caught up in his head, so another person being there and speaking to him gently helps. as for tolys, he doesn’t get nightmares much, it’s more flashbacks and panic attacks. he needs comfort, but only a hand on the shoulder and a gentle voice, really. if he’s hugged or crowded too soon he panics, doesn’t like to feel trapped. once he’s calmed down he’ll take a good cuddle :( it was weird for matt, to learn to give tolys space when he needs it, because matt can be really overbearing when he’s worried. his policy is that a good bear hug can fix most anything, but that’s not true for everyone! his restraint in the right moments shows just how much he cares for tolys <3

SoapGhost Aus that have been bouncing around in my head

I have thought way too much about these, they’re really long but I crave these fics.

Mer/Biologist Au: (this already kinda exists) Shark/or Orca mer!Ghost, Biologist!Soap who works at a rescue aquarium/museum. Ghost gets caught in one of they’re nets while tracking a recent release, while soap is on a day off. He get brought back to base(what Soap and Gaz call it) and put into a holding tank, Ghost is not very fond of that. Unknown to Ghost, there is another Mer in the aquarium already, Price a shark/or Orca as well who unfortunately cannot be released since he needs prosthetic fins after begging attacked, and lives in the main room (a huge tank, like the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom). He mostly hides during public hours in a connected tank away from eyes, but he is very kind to the staff (only 141 & laswell). How Soap and Ghost first meet is Ghost drags Soap under while he’s walking across the catwalk of the holding tank. Ensue Soap trying to befriend the grumpy Mer. OTHER CHARACTERS: Alex probably a dark blue Discus Mer (bc I think blue suits him but can be changed). Farah could be either Biologist or Mer, Graves definitely works at the aquarium and is a meanie, don’t know where Shepard fits but definitely a bad guy. Alejandro and Rudy are definitely both Mers. Valeria is baddie, but in a good way, she helps the mers but is disliked by Alejandro bc she (purposely) almost ran him over after a argument.

Wolf Walker Au: Soap is a wolf walker and Ghost is a Townie who’s family was killed by wolf walkers. Soap lives with his family in the woods, he is the only male in his family (bc honestly this man acts like he grew up with all sisters) and struggles to protect them from hunters set on destroying them. Chomps down on Ghost, who tracked him down one night, he didn’t mean to but Ghost had him pinned. Now Ghost is panicking bc he is the hunter become the hunted, something he’s hated forever. Soap thinks is fun after he gets snapped at my his mother. Ghost tells Price, another hunter, who tells Gaz who tells Roach, who tells the rest of the 141 hunters. They all swear not to hunt him unless he hurts a human. Ghost agrees. Eventually Soaps family gets tracked & captured in wolf form and is held captive in the town. Soap goes feral bc we love. Ghost is torn bc he known the pain of loosing family but he can’t let soap hurt innocent people. Ghost & the others talk him down and devise a new plan to free his family. It goes side ways, but ends with them being free. The 141 hunters follow the wolf walkers to a new forest to build new away from the hate.

Dragon Rider Au: we love a classic dragon fic. This stems from another Au by someone I can’t remember their name, buts they’re is based off GOT, where Ghost is a Targaryen (I think?) I love that Au. This Au is similar but with out the GOT, where Soap is a knight that gets saved by a dragon rider during battle, he never gets the rider name but remembers the dragon vividly and the mask. Soap wanted to be a rider but his knighthood to his monarch forbids him from riding, so he often thinks of the rider. Until one day the baron of house Riley is known to visit, Soap nearly fell over when the dragon that lingered in his thoughts blasted him with strong gusts from its wings. And it’s the masked rider! Soap is excited to see him again and finally thank him for saving his life. Then Soap gets assigned to Baron Riley to aid in a soothing rising conflict in bordering lands, he is even more excited. Less excited to learn he gets stuck on the ground with his horse while his leader is overhead. Soap eventually cracks the Baron and becomes close friends, he also gets to ride the dragon when they get separated, leaving soap with Ghost’s dragon. I think Soap should get his own at some point and then they can both be menaces of the sky.

Artist/Barista 141 Mafia Au: now this is also a things but this Au is just too good. Soap is a artist who works at a local cafe with his best friend Gaz, a free lance photographer. They live together and are chaotic besties. The cafe is a front for the 141 group, the leader Price owning it, both Soap and Gaz and unaware, bc Price is a stickler for keeping everything under tight wraps. Ghost is second in command is a feared by most members for being so ruthless and cold. He hangs around in the corners menacingly but is SO smitten for Soap, he is absolute fool when he speaks to the artist, like he’s so thankful for his mask or he’d be a glow stick with how red he gets, and he always complains to Roach after he embarrasses himself again. Roach thinks it’s funny but will stick with his bestie as his wingbug. One night after closing, Gaz and soap get snatched by Shadow company, 141’s biggest rival, they destroy the cafe and hold the boys for ransom. Both a confused like “who?” Cut to hurt comfort, after the two get tortured and tossed to the street after the shadows realize they really don’t know anything and Price finds them with busted noses, wet clothes and so many bruises. Ghost is infuriated when Price returns with them all busted up but informed of what their place of employment actually is. A lot of gang fights and plan to remove shadow company from the city, Soap gets to blow stuff up, Ghost gets a lil better at voicing his feels for soap (still bright red tho) and Price gains to new members who are way better at fighting then their other jobs. Also I feel like 141 would be a classy mafia, like 3 peice suits with slim bullet vests and under arm holsters.

Story time: when I got my first full employment contract with the current school last year, the guy making our timetables was an incompetent. As in, it was the Friday before classes started again, several teachers were still meant to teach three classes at the same time, and he point blank refused to work on the thing anymore.

So, since we did need timetables and nobody was doing anything, I said "gimme some time", opened google sheets, pushed my sleeves up, and managed to have something functional by mid-Sunday. The Big Boss, who was visiting at the time, asked me to be in charge of that for the school year.

Months pass, we had way too many versions of the timetables because the school pretty much doubled numbers through the year, and also (key element) I butted heads with the admin team several times over things they asked that were either not possible or stupid, but which HQ wanted anyway bc they refuse to realize that Cambodia is not Singapore and we sometimes can't do the exact same things they do.

Anyway, a little after the middle of the year, this guy H suddenly appears at one of the meetings. I go 'can I ask why he's here?' and I'm told he's here to 'help'. From that moment on, I did not receive a single scrape of information about timetables. Decisions were made without consulting or informing me, meetings happened that I wasn't even aware of, etc.

At this point you may realize, as I did, that I was subtly pushed out. I made the passive aggressive decision not to notice this, which led to probably more stress than I should have taken on...but still, I kept it up, until a couple months into this year, when the then-Principal told me that since they couldn't have 2 people in charge of timetables, they would have to go with H.

Now, I was quite bitter about the way we'd gotten there, but considering I'd been seriously considering handing in my 'resignation' from that responsibility, I ended up feeling more relieved than anything else. (Also, because I'm not perfect, I have to admit there was a bit of schadenfreude when H's first attempts at making timetables without considering what the teachers wanted gave him noticeable backlash.) In the meantime, H continues to make himself essential to the school in an attempt to become Head of Secondary, and is put in charge of organizing progress reports and Parents/Teachers conferences.

Fast forward a couple months: H did not become Head of Secondary, because he point blank refused to work with one of the teachers in the department. He is still in charge of timetabling & reports & PTCs organization, and is (not unfairly) expecting a big bonus for his performance last year. Problem: H's husband has to move to Paris for his job, and H intends to follow him before the end of the year, aka before the intended end of his contract. Consequently: H does not get a bonus.

H is not happy (which to be fair: he's right there) and decides to hasten his departure to Immediately, then is convinced to come back with what I have to assume is significant incentive. H is still leaving as soon as possible, though, and has to find a replacement for his responsibilities. So, who does he ask to pick up the torch?

Little disclaimer: this is 100% me being self indulgent; most of these questions were taking from a specific post here on Tumblr (I'll try linking it here). Either way, this is just an excuse for me to ramble about my oc x canon! If you stayed and you're interested and wanna ask questions, I'm always open to add more💙

1. What are their first impression of each other?

Daisy - at first, she didn't think much of him. But after suspecting him and Leona of sabotage in book 2 she actively butted heads with him; the idea of hurting others for his own personal gain didn't sit right with her; Ruggie - a magic-less person seemed pretty odd, but it wasn't his problem. When starting the events of book 2 I believe he took pleasure in annoying Daisy whenever they interacted, especially since he thought of her as just a goody two shoes and who likes a goody two shoes? They both had a deja vu moment when they first saw each other. They felt like the other one was familiar but couldn't put their finger on it (this is a little nod to the fact that before the events of the game they saw each other in each other's dreams)

2. Did either of them tried to resist their feelings?

For a while I believe Ruggie didn't want to admit these new feelings, not because the idea felt weird, but because he is a tad bit insecure about his background + would she even like him back?

3. Who initiated the relationship? And how did it go?

Short answer: Daisy, through a normal and shoujo-ish confession Long answer: Ruggie started being way nicer and kinder to her, sometimes, though it wasn't always, he even decided to share his food with her, which made everyone weirded out. This was Ruggie's way of being able to tell her that he enjoyed her company and that he liked her without ever needing to put his feelings into words. This felt like an incentive to Daisy because if he was being so kind and thoughtful of her, despite being known for being greedy and selfish, than this meant he saw her as more than a friend, right? She built up courage and confessed to him, even asking him on a date. He accepted even though he was a bit reluctant and nervous, and after two dates they started officially dating

5. What are their primary love languages?

Daisy calls Ruggie: Ruggie-senpai (normally, later switches to just Ruggie), love (as a form of endearment when she wants to be sweet), Rugs (started as a joke but found out he actually liked it, so she continued calling him that) Ruggie calls Daisy: Daisy-kun (normally, later switches to just Daisy), flower (teasingly and as a form of endearment), Eléa (her actual name, he mispronounces it most of the time but he tries when it's just the two of them and the situation calls for it)

7. What do my other OCs think of Ruggie and Daisy's relationship?

Honestly they don't have much of an opinion, my OCs don't usually hang out much (except for maybe Jeanne and Daisy bc Daisy is close to people from Savannaclaw); but Jeanne teases them a lot, especially Ruggie lmao

Something that’s still messing me up about Lazy in Space is how in ep12 when we get the flashback to Bee and Crispin’s breakup(I assume?) Bee pokes the top of his mouth and comments on how “everyone is ticklish up there except me” bcs like...I don’t recall us every really seeing Bee comment on how she feels about being a robot/not human? Other characters comment on her being way older than them and how she never ages, and there are the little things Bee herself brings up, but there’s never any big hint that she’s struggling with acting human or upset by the differences between her and the people she cares about...EXCEPT THAT.

And is especially sad bcs her comment is made in response to Crispin accusing her of essentially not performing sadness correctly, it’s like she’s really drawing attention to the fact that she isn’t human to prove some sort of point to him, you know? Which is also interesting bcs Bee doesn’t seem to hide that fact that she’s not human, but she doesn’t really draw attention to it either? So her explicitly drawing attention to it is interesting.

It makes me wonder if that’s part of why they broke up. Maybe Crispin wasn’t good at understanding the way Bee did express her emotions--including love?--and got it in his head that she didn’t care about him the way he cared about her, or maybe Bee struggled with understanding what the average human needs out of a relationship and they started butting heads(Bee did say she was sad AND confused), but either way that’s just like, really double extra sad.

But also...sort of remarkably human? Because a lot of relationships end when people stop being able to communicate their own needs or meet the needs of their partners, so like...maybe Bee shouldn’t have to feel alienated at all because at the end of the day she may be different physically but she’s still just as human as the people around her when you really get down to it. (Kinda gives me the same vibes as how when Puppycat found her getting her arm fixed and she comments on there being a lot about each other they don’t know he just asks what her favorite color is...kdlfk something something about being different and yet the same idk it makes me have feelings)

Anyway I’m probably reading too far into this, but I am a bit of a whore for stories about robots trying to understand their own existence and find their humanity, and upon yet another re-watch that comment REALLY sticks out to me and is making me very sad and very curious about Bee and Crispin’s relationship.

and i try to make the characters and their thoughts/feelings as real as i can. which means that they won't behave perfectly in every situation and bc of this joel quitting his job just wasn't realistic to me.

But it also wasn’t realistic for the OC to be okay dating someone that fucks other woman on the regular lol. I also remember reading this story back when you first posted it and that was the one thing that felt so out of place. The OC was so inexperienced and innocent, her being like “just don’t tell me about the women you fuck” was completely unrealistic and it made their entire relationship felt doomed from the start.

Sorry for butting in but writers so often say “I want to write realistically” but often it’s definitely not at all realistic lol

i'm sorry you feel that way. i thought i'd established her as inexperienced but never as innocent. she was supposed to be shy and anxious with some family baggage from strict parents which had made her that way, but i never meant for her to be innocent. she worked for him, knew the ins and outs of the industry but was inexperienced in experiencing sex and relationships. many inexperienced people are interested in sex and love, but it doesn't mean that they are innocent just bc they haven't experienced it themselves. to me it didn't feel out of place or unrealistic bc she worked in the business, she did know how it worked. everything happened in her head, with her anxious mind playing tricks on her. she was not a reliable narrarator, and when i wrote from joel's pov i tried to show how she'd gotten him and his feelings wrong. she didn't have anything to worry about, he was falling for her. when she told him that she was okay with it but didn't want to see it- it was her realizing that her anxious mind was wrong. at least that was my intention.

i'm fully aware that the story isn't good, and it's my fault as the writer. maybe the whole thing should've just been them breaking up instead. but that's what i meant about how i feel like i can only write things if they end up either black or white. either he quits or they break up- there is no inbetween. there is no room to give people grace or the benefit of the doubt- bc then that's unrealistic. but i can't do anything about it now, what's done is done.

misc lore drop day 28/?

Gah this has been the focus of my last two posts so this will probably end up being me just rehashing the same things BUT. I don't care, it's my post. I'm just so endeared to the idea of intense arguing being vettonso's special thing(irl, but specifically in this au.) Again, to anyone else, it comes off as very aggressive and worrying. Like wow they really aren't getting along well, is this marriage gonna crash and burn before it even really begins? Whenever they start up, people worry they're gonna have to pull them apart like fighting dogs. But, no. It's their thing! They don't get at all why everyone around them gets nervous. You call it arguing, they call it a passionate debate , a conversation even. I would use the word “friendly," but they would probably get annoyed at that. The ladies doth protest too much, methinks…

It's very interesting too how they personally view it though. Clearly it's a point of familiarity, and something they can bond over. They also fiercely defend their right to argue, I mean debate, and absolutely HATE when anyone tells them to lay off the other, like "Hey woah we're having a debate here, if you can't handle the heat, get out of the hearth." If anyone tried to get involved and defend one of them or something, said person would get annoyed at the intrusion. Imagine someone butting in and being like, “hey stop being so rude to the Emperor, this is so disrespectful!” Seb in return would yell at them, “HEY DID I SAY YOU COULD SPEAK!? WE’RE HAVING A PRIVATE CONVO RN!” Ignoring the fact they’re talking so loud that people across the continent could hear it. But, at the same time, as I said, they would deny it to an insane decree if anyone, god forbid, accused them of actually getting along.  

They're both very argumentative, demanding, opinionated people. This is obviously very hard for most people to deal with. Like, oh my god, stop turning everything into an argument, I’m just trying to make polite conversation! They've spent a lot of their lives leading up to their courtship sulking because no one will fully engage them in the way they desperately want to. Even when people do, it’s way too passive, and just ends up getting uncomfortable. Also, they hang around a bunch of yes-men most of the time so it makes sense why they aren’t getting too challenged, because it would be extremely discourteous. But then they majorly enter each other’s lives. I like to imagine it begins with one of them making an innocuous statement like "I prefer blue to red." The other can't help himself from saying "um actually red is superior bcs of xyz." And he's smacking themselves in the head internally, like oh god, he's gonna start bitching, isn’t he? Not that either of them really care deeply about offending other people, but rather it's such a hassle when the other person isn't willing to debate, and goes on and on about how irritating it is. Like damn okay, coward, I don't need your whole spiel about it. But then the other man gets a glimmer in his eye, and goes along with it. Boom. Fireworks.

On the topic of misogyny in retellings, do you have any thoughts on the male characters’ misogyny in Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles series? I feel like it could fall under “gritty realism” but sometimes it leaves a bad taste for me?

Yeah I think we're in agreement. The Winter King wasn't the worst but it certainly wasn't the greatest either. Look no further than how Ladwys was treated by Owain while everyone just listened to her scream and ignored it. Oh but she's "deserving" of rape bc Gundleus is evil so punishing her is punishing him. Or something. And matters worsened in the sequels Enemy of God and Excalibur.

Like the thing is, it felt to me as if Bernard Cornwell wrote a grimdark story, and attempted to include compelling women who go through hell, but missed the mark in a big way. All the rapist murdering shithead men die terribly (rest in piss Owain, Gundelus, Tanaburs, Lancelot etc) so they're all punished narratively for their actions sooner or later. But at the same time, I don't recall that any characters voice criticism of Merlin's sexual relationship with young Nimue or 30yo Tristan's sexual relationship with 15yo Isolde. That's where you can see the author's disturbing view of women and girls seeping through. Even if Ceinwyn was written well, what does that matter against Arthur and Derfel allowing Mark to burn Isolde at the stake bc Tristan couldn't control himself around a teenager? And then Arthur goes and marries Isolde's sister Argante in Excalibur. "She's too young for Arthur," says Derfel and Ceinwyn. That's what writers call "a sign post," which is supposed to signal to the reader that the author doesn't agree with the actions of the character by having other character's call attention to it. Okay, fine, that is there. But why is young Olwen also sexualized? Then how was Derfel persuaded to believe that Isolde/Tristan was somehow less inappropriate than Isolde/Mark? Oh right, bc Mark is fat so he's "gross," as Arthur called him, while Tristan is such a good, handsome guy. Therefore morally pure. Riiiiight. Cringe. It's deeply uncomfortable to contemplate.

My hope was the show that came out in 2023 would address a lot of this but somehow it's legit worse if you can believe it. They made Owain a decent guy. (Which actually makes his death stupid especially bc Arthur mourns his "friend?" That was his rapist thieving coworker with a good sword arm at best but okay.) And showrunners cut Tanaburs and Lancelot entirely. None of that actually benefitted the show whatsoever.

For example, in The Winter King book, Derfel returns from Ynys Trebes and Bishop Bedwin tells him Nimue has been sent to the Isle of the Dead by the local law enforcement bc she was butting heads with Christians and she ultimately killed some people in a church. Not great but I see how the narrative ended up there and Derfel went to retrieve her immediately. She had only been there so long bc Derfel wasn't even in the country. While Derfel is escaping with Nimue, Galahad comes to meet them and help.

But in the show, Derfel never goes to Ynys Trebes. He's just....around, as a side character. Meanwhile Sansum is trying to establish a church in Nimue's front yard or whatever and then his men get sick and die. They blame Nimue for "cursing" them. Arthur himself then sends Nimue to the Isle of the Dead, only for Derfel to play detective and discover the place where Sansum's men retrieved water from had a dead animal in it. They were unknowingly poisoning themselves. Nimue didn't do anything but spit on Sansum (which was deserved), she didn't kill anyone. Derfel then goes to the Isle of the Dead to retrieve Nimue. Alone. Only later does Arthur and Sagramore meet them to escape so Arthur can be like "Haha oopsie! My mistake! Will you help me talk the Druids into being my subjects--I mean working with me to get the kingdom in order for evil baby Prince--I mean normal baby Prince Mordred?" It's obscene.

So all around, The Warlord Chronicles isn't the pinnacle of literature if one is seeking an author who drinks respect women juice. Look elsewhere. But for all its faults, I don't think it's unreadable either. I don't regret reading it. There are beautiful passages and fascinating characters and I did enjoy it as a whole. But certainly there are really rough aspects that I could have done without.

I LOVE PAZZI FACETIME LORE and it really lives in my head rent free so I just couldn't resist adding it and I kinda wanted it to parallel when they were younger.

Azzi played a pretty big role in ruining the relationship in the sense she was definitely the person who put the whole thing in motion but she's not necessarily completely wrong, that's all I'll say.

Unfortunately, I miraculously still love Arturo, I looove freak characters so much (no one is surprised!!) and I do genuinely think there's potential to come out of his...... err.......... What definitely reads like blatant in-character transphobia. LOL. Seeing this man doubled over in terrifying euphoria is truly all I could've ever asked for, so I can't complain.

In general, Arturo weirdly doesn't read like a character that will progressively get worse and worse until he's put down like ol yeller, I feel that he's got some sort of redemption ahead of him,, whether or not he dies afterwards or in the middle of said redemption. Maybe with an attempt to get genuinely close to J but it's rejected and heartbreaking for him, more spiraling but you feel a little bad for him somehow. Idk. Not to be delusional but I also have this idea, that I REALLY hope is somehow true despite every piece of contradicting canon information, that Arturo is transmasc too ..... because like ..... whatever.. crosses my arms.. you wouldnt get it .........

For the most part I generally don't care for Levi (just not my typea character ig, nothing personnel kid), so while it is a little YEESH that all of Ace's character rn seems to be driving towards Levi and their heads butting together, I am still a little intrigued by said interactions. They're like a chihuahua and a pitbull, ykno, ykno. Would not be surprised if Levi merked him but that might be too obvious of a kill so hmhmmhmhm.

Speaking of which;; they're also like waaaaaaayyyy playing up the possibility of either Whit and/or Eden dying soon. So I have a feeling they are safe...for now... maybe. Shrugs. I hope Eden gets another layer to her soon, either way, she is very sweet.... too sweet. Take that as you will.

With the tension in the air as it is now, I'm far less worried they're gonna pull another accidental blackened, since idk if anyone remembers but I was very concerned about that in the past. It's fine and fun for a first chapter, though! Gets things rolling I suppose :D Now everyone is incredibly scared and unbearably pissed off at everyone at all times, so yippee!

Fun motive, too, I think the whole secrets thing was a super fun concept in THH and I hope we get to learn everyone's secret at some point. PLEASE I BEG.

Sometimes I think about the moments where I was tempted to put my version of Yuu (actually named Brine) on here bc I need more oc presence. I built her up in TWST to be this orphan who dodged the questions of going home the best I could, so every time it was brought up she and Crowley were just doing this awkward "WELL GEEZ, THAT'S JUST TOO BAD" dance of not finding a way. She doesn't want to leave! She used to live in a cruddy little shack on the beach (thus why she's called 'Brine' - she smells strongly of the sea and made her way by doing odd jobs like cleaning up the waters & lighthouse and fishing). Living in Ramshackle and fixing is up is the DIY DREAM! She likes that it's weird and needs some fixing up. She likes having a home.

I hit almost every sarcastic option for her and made her charge head first into danger because she has anger issues out the wazoo and always chooses violence. But also, she pounced on overblot situations like an eager Ghostbuster because she's gained this dominating responsible sense of wanting to keep the peace level in the school. She's only known turbulence, she wants to keep the foundation stable.

When it comes to the dorm leaders...

Wow, did Brine and Riddle not get along in the beginning. After the overblot, they're on a tolerable, amicable level where she does rub him the wrong way but things don't get out of hand. They could, but the opportunity has not arose. She does not do well with authoritarianism.

Given Brine is very sea-oriented, one might expect that she and Azul get along swimmingly. Not quite. Azul tries to worm his way in, sensing she is a gal of the sea and considers it to be her home, but his smooth talk and business ethics just turn her the other way. She loves the lounge though, so she gives him props for that. She does, however, have a little bit of a soft spot for Octavinelle though, it's inevitable. It has a sense of familiarity comfort to it, and due to that, it allows leeway for those two to build upon.

She and Leona butted heads MASSIVELY and I swear they've come so close to blows, but with time, they just grew on each other like obnoxious sibling fungus. She punches and/or kicks him in passing and he does the same to her. Hitting with them is a form of affection. Definitely not a good idea to get between them when they really argue though, it gets pretty ugly since they both do not back down.

Brine and Malleus vibe wonderfully. Brine has insomnia and tends to stay up well into the AMs, leading to conversations that wile on for a good hour or so. He's come to know her the most out of all the students (outside of Grim) because of these late night chatters.

Before my iPad took a nosedive down the stairs with me and left me with no access to my gamefile from then on, I had just got into Scarabia. Brine and Kalim are chef's kiss, get along swimmingly -- though the dorm is way too dry for her to fully enjoy. The heat is much too intense! His all-welcoming flouncy personality and her roughish and socially inept self just mashed together beautifully. She will throw down for that boy SO hard. Her comfort with him is at max and she has been spotted just crashed out taking naps using his lap as a pillow.

Because I lost access, I did not really get to experience Vil and Idia. 💀 From the very, VERY basic knowledge I have of either, I really don't know if Vil would like Brine. I can see him wanting to chase her with a hairbrush because her hair always looks unruly and she has an unkempt look about her that might make his lip curl, and she would not be appreciative of that. Idia, meanwhile, I suspect might be a little skittish about her. He can probably sense this intense, pent-up stormy spirit she has and might be put off by it, but again, I don't know his character all too well.

I always visualized that after she graduates, Brine would end up becoming part of the staff as some sort of groundskeeper who keeps threat at bay. She loves to work with animals, especially mystical ones, so she might become something of a creature teacher (much to Crowley's relief /coughs).

I might actually add her to my blog way off into the future. I even had these little things prepared for when I would! Right now life is a little too chaotic, but she could be just a muse vibing in the background on the blog if anyone wanted to mess with a TW.ST au, or something.

She always has those bags under her eyes. Perpetually Tired.
