Japanese QL Corner
ICYMI: There are so many Japanese qls airing weekly, so I’m going to start posting this little round up at the end of each week. Most of these shows are on Gaga and I highly recommend watching!
Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna 2
Another great batch of episodes this week, as Kasuga and Nomoto settled into dating life, all the gals got together for various food related events, and Nagumo began seeking treatment for her eating disorder. This show is just always so compassionate with its characters, and manages to find interesting conflicts without going for high drama. I am very much enjoying seeing Kasuga and Nomoto figure out how their relationship should look now that they're dating and also how to communicate and respect each other as they make decisions. Kasuga's tendency to let Nomoto steamroll her feels harmless when it's about picking fruit or vegetables, but it won't be when it comes to making decisions about where they live and how to set up their home, so it's great they're addressing it early. It's also awesome to see them expand their circle of friends and deepen their bonds with Yako and Nagumo--I was high key jealous of the curry and s'mores parties. And Nagumo just has my whole heart. When she expressed profound relief at learning there is a name for her illness and ways to treat it, my mind immediately jumped to Rachel Bloom. Looking forward to her healing. I can't believe there is only one more batch of episodes coming, love and gratitude to @furritsubs!
Chaser Game W
I’ll keep this brief. This show was a mess, and not even in a fun way because unfortunately it was also extremely misogynistic. @twig-tea covered the major issues well in her post. Wild that this show aired simultaneously with TsukuTabe, what a dichotomy.
My Strawberry Film
This one is really not grabbing me. It feels kind of slow and muted and uncertain about what it's doing. I am not finding the mystery or the love rhombus compelling, and this week's focus on Hikaru's infatuation with Minami had me yawning and picking up my phone a lot. But it's early, I am hopeful it will pick up some steam.
Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka
This was a cute episode about Sakae and Soga getting past their initial awkwardness, learning how to communicate with each other, and moving into a more intimate phase of their relationship, and I think I would have loved it if we'd gotten it two weeks ago. This should have been the episode that followed their initial confessions, but instead the show did a two week diversion into love triangle nonsense, and unfortunately, I think it really threw off the pacing and the connection to these characters for me. It just feels too late in the show for this relationship to still feel so new. We haven't had time to settle in with them as a couple, or for them to develop a strong foundation to make us root for them to overcome the coming obstacles in the final arc. Still, this episode had some delightful scenes--Soga finally paying a visit to the sauna was my personal fav, and I also enjoyed the metaphor of Sakae literally catching Soga's love (and knowing @bengiyo would lose it over another important SPORTS moment in bl). This is a show I really want to love, but something just isn't connecting.
Perfect Propose
I love this final episode and I love this show. Hiro quit his job, Kai resolved things with the shop owner and his son, and they finally got on the same page about their relationship and made out about it. 10/10 no notes for this finale. It was lovely to see Hiro finish his project and make a decision to quit the daily grind--I loved, too, that he is still in touch with his former colleagues--and we saw the change in him so quickly. He looked happier, lighter, brighter. His skin was cleared and his crops were watered! And Kai got to have his moment of catharsis too, sharing his fear that he is a burden on others and having Hiro affirm for him that he wants him in his life and he's a help, not a burden. And I loved that we got all that plus a great kiss, a bed scene (with a very cute leg cramp diversion) and a small peek at their new domestic life together. This show makes me happy and it will definitely be one I return to for rewatches.
Ossan's Love Returns
I'm of two minds on this finale. On the one hand, I really loved it as a single episode of the show, was happy with where all the resolutions landed, and was left with a very warm feeling toward the show overall. The cherry blossom scene especially really got me right in the feels; I've loved the progression of Maki and Haruta's relationship this season and I love the way they talk to each other. They have earned themselves a spot on my list of favorite drama couples who I actually believe are going to stay together. I also loved everything about the big chaotic group scene and all these characters coming together to pour love on Haruta; it felt earned after a season of him knocking himself out for all his loved ones. The end joke with Chief moving in next door, and getting a final Maki/Kurosawa battle, was *chef's kiss*. And Takegawa's perfect life partner being a cat? 10/10 no notes. I will be clutching my aroace Takegawa read tightly to my bosom.
On the other hand, the episode reinforced for me that the way we got to a lot of these resolutions didn't feel quite right. In particular, I don't think the way Kurosawa's health scare played out across the back half of the season worked, and I'm not too pleased about spending three episodes in a downbeat, tragic mode for the sake of a simple pun joke. I think the whole plot would have landed a lot better for me if the audience was let in on Kurosawa's mistake at the start and the tone of his overwrought goodbyes was farcical all the way through. Not only would that have maintained the comedic tone of the show, but we could have used that story time to better seed some of the themes of this episode with Haruta's crisis of confidence and yearning for family. I'm pretty much agnostic on Kiku and Izumi; they never sold me on that pairing but I wasn't mad about their ending.
Overall, I am very glad I jumped into this show and enjoyed the watch experience a lot, despite my quibbles with some of the overarching writing choices. The cast is amazing and all the characters make me smile. If they make another season, I'll be watching!
Bonus: Josi teki Saikatsu
I finally watched this drama this week--I held out for awhile hoping to find it in better quality, but no dice, it's 480p in the grey--and despite the potato lens I loved it so much. This is the story of Miki, a transfemme lesbian, just trying to live her life in the way she wants, and all the barriers she comes up against in that pursuit. Our story begins when her childhood friend, Goto, comes looking for his old pal in a moment of desperation and is stunned to see how she's changed. The show is only four short episodes, but they manage to paint a full picture of Miki's life at home, at work, with friends and lovers, and with her estranged family, and show us how she became who she is. Miki is whip smart and perceptive and generous, but also wary of trusting anyone after she's been let down by so many loved ones. I love her so much, and you will too. This story was written by a trans woman and it shows! Brave the 480p and check it out.

Don't Care for an Old Man's Underwear! Ep 6 Stray Thoughts
This watch is made possible by the continued efforts of @isaksbestpillow
Last time, Makoto kept getting praised for the progress he's been making, and then really stepped in it big time. Daichi was having a hard time because his boyfriend can't come out due to the expectation that he would return to his hometown after graduation. Mihoko chatted with Mika, and they decided to host a BBQ to give Daichi and Madoka a chance to be around people in public, and Mika hoped it would bring Kakeru out of his room. Unfortunately, Makoto was too excited and outed them. Meanwhile, Kakeru bonded with a boy in his class over skincare. I'm still rooting for Makoto.
No, noy the cake!
Moe coming through again. She's right to point out that the focus should not be on Makoto here. As a fujoshi, admitting she doesn't care about real life romance is also sending me. I think she also had that conversation in the hallway to make sure Kakeru heard it too.
Wow they brought out an even worse man.
I love Shimura so much. She's like, "He's already got what's coming to him."
Kakeru's nemesis is at this seminar!
Great comedy with the flier. Holy shit.
I'm glad we're spending time with Mika this episode.
Look at that. Kakeru is maybe starting to bond with his unexpected rival.
I'm so sad for Mika. She wanted to share something important to her with the family and no one is here to receive it.
Mika deserved to go off and she is right. You could feel a lifetime of being dismissed come out of her in that moment. It's always something small that reveals a huge burden. She wanted to share a small thing she was proud of and couldn't get that. The casual sexism has hurt her for decades, too.
Oh good, Makoto figured it out and told Moe.
Yes, Carlos, drag us back to the gays!!!
Wow. These bench scenes continue to give me so much life. It's a shame that so much of the world is covered in hostile architecture designed to keep people out of public spaces.
I'm feeling so much for Daichi and Madoka. It's hard to be mad at Makoto when what they're frustrated by are their circumstances. Madoka feels a sense of duty and responsibility to his family that he doesn't think his queerness is compatible with, and there's not much Daichi can do about that. Daichi wasn't afforded a closet. He was bullied before he could even figure himself out.
This is a phenomenal moment between Mika and Moe. In a show spending so much time about the sexism of men, I like that Moe acknowledged that she dismissed her mom, too.
I like returning to the story about the tanuki to reveal that Mika was the one who bore the brunt of caring for Moe when she was sick. Mika has done the best she can with her choices, but it's not what she wanted to do. I totally get her taking these petty wins
Okay, I love them fighting for tickets for her favorite boy band. It makes sense now that they might represent the youth she feels like she didn't get to have.
I'm crying about the tickets, and now the first family dinner of the show.
And they're having curry!
Incredible show.
This episode was one of my favorites, because we do need to reckon with the fact that many women are still alive and still unhappy about the lot they've been given. There is no way to fix everything that's happened in the last twenty years, but we can let them enjoy the things that bring them a little joy in their lives. This was also earned from the earlier work at Comica. I really loved this. It really was as simple as acknowledging all that Mika does as a first step.

thoughts. on the. curry episode? 9aka the toootally most important entry to the entirey of the danganronpa plot /s)
I knew about the aphrodisiac scene, but I didn't know what actually happened in it before watching it myself. I was not ready for it to be in the second freaking episode!
In short? That scene was hella uncomfortable! In long? Well ...
Let me clarify something that anyone who's read my fanfics may have already picked up on: I'm totally okay with seeing sexual content in fiction, whether it's dirty jokes in scripts or love scenes in movies. (For goodness' sake, Miu Iruma is one of my fave DR chars, and her whole shtick is making everything needlessly sexual!) Sex is a part of many people's lives, potentially a very important part, especially starting at around the age the characters are in the curry scene. How it's used in a story can do much to develop a character and, yes, move the plot forward.
Even if sexual content isn't present for such functional reasons, it can still be fun, weird, dramatic, or otherwise interesting! Not every story needs or is improved by sexual content, sure, but nor does every story need to be sterilized of all sexual content.
That's why I'm gonna give this scene a Fair and Balanced assessment, starting with what I actually liked about the curry scene. Not a long list:
Akane and Nekomaru's reactions are fittingly over the top, and I think it's cute that instead of really making them horny, the aphrodisiac mostly makes them actually open up about their deeper feelings for each other?! That's so fitting for them, imo.
The bit with Kazuichi's jacket zipper is a pretty solid bit of visual comedy/innuendo, though his aiming for Sonia just makes his existing creepiness much creepier.
I was genuinely amused at the reveal that Hiyoko was the one who drugged everyone, and not for any lascivious reasons but as a prank that's misguided at best.
I didn't like Teruteru's reaction to that reveal ... but I loved seeing Chiaki Nanami go all Scott Pilgrim on his would-be rapist ass.
I'm just saying, I disagree with the notion that the curry scene was doomed in conception. It's the execution that grossed me out. I already mentioned Kazuichi and Teruteru's dark sides getting ramped up, and both cases are played too flippantly for comfort, real boys-will-be-boys kinda attitude even if nothing comes of their actions. Then there's Mikan Tsumiki, known to have experienced a lot of sexual assault in the past. Her depiction as a total horndog, not just here but throughout DR3, really icks me out. This scene is too loose about the wrong things.
At the same time, it's too restrained about the wrong things as well. This scene wouldn't be better if it actually became full-on hentai. It would've been funnier if the characters did more than just lie on the ground looking sweaty and constipated! Bits like the Kazuichi zipper thing point to an alternate version where everyone tries very hard to be normal while riding out the drug's effects, barely succeeding, and looking ridiculous along the way. Seems like they didn't want to be that suggestive ... except, of course, with the two creepiest dudes in the bunch and the sexual assault survivor. Missed opportunity, I'd say. Does Nagito even get a speech about how not whipping out his dick would help to build everyone's hope? (I think he says something silly but I can't recall lol)
Geez, I did not expect my Fair and Balanced Take on the DR3 Curry Scene to run this long ._.
In short, the curry scene simultaneously goes too far and doesn't go far enough, largely in the wrong ways. It's tough to argue against the "sexual content in stories can never be good" crowd when so many examples fall into that uncomfortable middle ground.

tgcf liveread 7
continuing porting my liveread of Pure Light And Joy In Novel Form, Heaven Official's Blessing, Tian Guan Ci Fu, from the dying twitter to the optimistically-not-dead tumblr. please support official translations of TGCF, the best novel, and maybe someday we'll get to see the COMPLETED, FILMED, EDITED LIVE ACTION if the chinese government ever quits being ragingly homophobic. enjoy season one of the donghua in the meantime and do read the original text!
originally tweeted on 3/31/2020:
I unabashedly love Xie Lian’s thrifty grandma personality & also the casual “wanna come to my ghost palace instead of always staying at your one-room apartment with three other people also living here which I never complain about even though I own a fjking palace”
I have Great Fondness for the ghosts in Ghost City being overly protective of Hua Cheng & Xie Lian (even if it is just to try to curry favor)
hahahaha oh my god this scene of sexytimes on an altar on top of poetry about Longing....
I’m. VERY PUMPED ABOUT SEEING MOUNT TONG’LU
tomorrow. i guess ill be responsible & start CHAPTER 128 TOMORROW THANKS EVERYBODY THIS IS THE ONLY THING BRINGING ME JOY AS I WORK THRU THIS PANDEMIC
yall Lang Ying THOUGHT HUA CHENG LIVED WITH THEM im dying....
He didnt think he could hide his feelings HE DIDNT THINK HE COULD HIDE HIS FEELINGS HEAAAAAAAAA
He’s really going straight WE USED TO SLEEP IN THIS BED TOGETHER level melancholy oh my god
This is a little nightmare story, the kind at which MXTX excels
Oh my god hes the crown prince of PINING AWAY TO NOTHING
okay mxtx it is Not At All Obvious that Hua Cheng is this Lang Ying & this gratituitious bathing scene is.... amazing omg
more like dianxia babysitter of errant dieties
-shi qingxuan
-quan yizhen
-qi rong
Heavenly Babysitter Dianxia confirmed with DONT PUT THAT IN YOUR MOUTH and DONT SET THAT ON FIRE
Think of the donghua playing with this scene of attacking empty clothes
his whole “this is the robe! no THIS is the robe! just kidding it was never here! now ive trapped you!” feels a little Princess Bride iocane powder reasoning
the boyfriends being Soft sustains me
hahahahahahaha god xie lian’s cooking is so amazingly terrible how is this book so great in its most domestic scenes
OUR BOY SNAPPED
bitches destroy Puqi Shrine gotta contend with the Flower Crown Martial Prince
hahahaha hua cheng really had to turn into a child for Flimsy Plot Reasons didn’t he
this Ghost Inn scene is pure chaos and slapstick & detail & action, and this is the cherry on top of the elaborately-crafted layers of this cake of a scene
Im sad about ling wen???? I love her???? She’s the most competent character in this book sorry hua cheng
“He might spit in the water of someone he doesn’t like....or put laxatives....but not poison...” Lolololol
Let’s pause mid-investigation so we can appreciate hualian holding hands
fetuses don’t have teeth......LIES EXPOSED
fetus eyes also don’t yoke together in utero this is a real medical fact unrelated to the fetus ghost in tgcf
ah yes, sitting in the window in the glowing, luminious moonlight, with your weapon-pet-scarf, an excellent time for a heart to heart confessional with your beloved
this is on level with Single Plank Bridge as a life philosophy / love confessional
so many important scenes happen over a table here. Jun Wu + Xie Lian + Hua Cheng taking tea without dissembling is A Mood
“Sometimes three with a single move” Lololol I Love Him
This adorable little exchange where they just talk about how much they belong to each other
Let’s stop here a second, pause the film on Puppet Master boyfriends, and do a bit of Plot Dissection:
-Jun Wu has sent Xie Lian to Mt TongLu to...become the next Ghost King
-Hua Cheng, the most recent Ghost King, is with him
-don’t you have to kill all the other ghosts to win
Let’s also stop & think about our Magical Girl Dianxia becoming A Ghost King:
I have no idea how this plot is gonna turn out but it’s always fun & fruitful to examine your thoughts & expectations the first time through something & wonder why you want or fear a certain outcome
Hua Cheng would be devastated if Xie Lian became a fierce ghost king capable of murdering millions. In fact it’s so antithetical to everything he is that, at that point, Xie Lian wouldn’t be the same person anymore.
(contrast this to wwx & lwj, both of whom have proven themselves capable of Big War Murder when pushed hard enough)
he contrast of soft sideplot of boyfriends being The Most Obviously In Love But Afraid To Say It and the extremely harsh main plot of What The Fuck, Did God Just Send Xie Lian Into A Literal Torture Volcano With Like, Real High Stakes
... but also does anyone else wanna see ghost king boyfriends
these gays obviously
but this plot, lighthearted flirting aside, is going to a real dark place??? & i see the end of book 3 coming with xie lian in a real bad cliffhanger of a situation for me to sit through while reading another painful flashback
Lolololol more fuckin on the altar i guess
The General Who Broke His Sword !!!!
let’s take a roll call:
(check) the general who broke his sword
(check) the prince who pleased the gods
[ ] the princess who slit her own throat
(check) the young lord who poured wine
OKAY BRING OUT THE REST IM READY!
continue Mt Tong'lu next time on TGCF Liveread livetweets part 8 or whatever part is next!

Hey guys, Daiki Aomine here
We're nearing the end of the final quarter of the match, but Satsuki ain't out yet. I think Tetsu would probably say something like, "Give it all you got! It's not over yet!" He'd be right though. Satsuki, you got more than enough experience to take this.
===
let me introduce one of my favorite bonus manga chapters just to show momoi some more!!
[Image ID: A picture introducing Momoi and Kuroko. Momoi is blushing, looking nervously to the right at Kuroko. Kuroko is simply looking ahead. The text at the top right is kanji which is translated to "TEIKO Junior High School" The text in Momoi's picture reads "MOMOI SATSUKI," and the text below her reads: MOMOI SATSUKI Birthday: 5/4 Blood Type: A Interests: Collecting bath salts The text above Kuroko reads: KUROKO TETSUYA Birthday: 31/1 Blood Type: A Interests: Reading, Observing People The words in his picture read, "KUROKO TETSUYA." End ID]
momoi gets very nervous around kuroko because she has a huge crush on him!! this is very important for this bonus chapter because it revolves around momoi and kuroko participating in their middle school's club festival!! very cute and silly hijinks occur
[Image ID: 3 manga panels about a conversation between Momoi Satsuki and her friend Izumi Yayoi. The first panel (top right) is Izumi questioning Momoi, "What, what? Satsuki, you have someone you want to enter with?" (because rumor has it the pair who wins becomes a happy couple). The second panel (top left) has Izumi putting her arm around Momoi's shoulder, wondering, "Momoi-san, hmm..." The final panel is a close up of both of their blushing faces, where Izumi asks Momoi again, "Whooo do you want to enter with?" Izumi pokes Momoi's face as she asks this. End ID]
this little scene sets up the plot, because with such a rumor going around, momoi may finally have the chance to go out with kuroko!! of course, she's too nervous to admit that... but its ok!! she is trying her best!!
[Image ID: 4 manga panels detailing Kuroko's sudden appearance in front of Momoi. The top panel shows Momoi's eye, as she hears someone say, "Momoi-san, would you like to have some curry?" The next panel is Momoi lowering a piece of paper she was looking at upon noticing the voice. The third panel has her looking much more surprised with a very visible blush as three arrows stab through a heart. The final panel on the left shows her full visible shock as she exclaims, "Te.. Tetsu-kun!!" Kuroko is standing on the left with his back facing the viewer. End ID]
once again, it really shows how nervous momoi gets around kuroko! she likes him ALOT! its kinda endearing really! kuroko is a really nice guy too who is VERY kind to momoi!! this will be the start of their silly school adventure!! its very cute trust me!!
i only have space right now to introduce this chapter but it gets really wild later with more of the generation of miracles showing up!! (specifically, momoi, kuroko, aomine, and kise all make major appearances in the rally). please vote and support momoi because she is trying her best out here!!
Daiki Aomine heading out

Kalim Al Asim - Master Chef
You can unlock this story by getting Kalim’s SR Master Chef
Translation under the cut
Chapter 1
Cafetaria - Judging Venue
A little while before the cooking preparations start-
Kalim: Chef! Please take care of me!
Trey: Well, aren’t you excited?
Ghost chef: He certainly is. Were you perhaps looking forward to the Master Chef program?
Kalim: Yeah! I’ve always been told that “I’m not allowed to use kitchen knives or stoves because they’re dangerous”. That’s why I pretty much never cooked before. But they gave me the okay because a professional is instructing me today! So I’m super excited to try some real cooking!
Ghost chef: S-So, they forbid you to touch knives and stoves? You must’ve grown up in quite an overprotective household. Nevertheless, I am elated that you were looking forward to this program so much! I am eager to teach you. Let me list the meals we’re going to make today.
Kalim: We’re going to make biryani, right?
Ghost chef: Yes. Biryani is a seasoned rice with meat and all kinds of ingredients and spices. We steam curry and rice together, alternated on top of each other in layers. Originally it was a dish of the royal court, and is served a lot at festivals~
Kalim: That’s great! Seems like a perfect dish to welcome guests with.
Trey: Hey Kalim. I have one question… You’re always hosting the banquets. Have you never worked behind the scenes? If you never did, I understand why you wouldn’t know how to cook on purpose but…
Kalim: Now that you say it, Jamil always takes care of the preparations, not me. But this time I know that it’s the host's job to cook the meals to entertain the guests at the banquet. Seeing a chunk of meat roast in front of you, cutting stuff up… I really wanted to try it myself!
Trey: I see. So that’s why you took up Master Chef.
Kalim: Yeah. I can entertain more guests by learning more ways to delight them. By the way, you’re in charge of making the sweets at Heartslabyul’s tea parties, aren’t you? You seem like an expert at receptions, so if you have any secrets, please tell me.
Trey: I don’t think you should use our Unbirthday parties as reference. It’s basically just a gathering of people of our own. It’s different from your parties with guests from all over. And even if you were to use it as a reference… Don’t you want to try making sweets for divided preferences?
Kalim: Huh! So you do it like that. I just want to make everyone eat whatever I like… But yeah, there probably are some people who don’t like peculiar tasting herbs. I realized that next time I hold a feast, I should have a menu that everyone loves and not only ornate dishes. I just want to please as many people as I can!
Ghost chef: Indeed, the guests’s wishes are most important for hospitality. I too stand in the kitchen every day to see the smiles of our students. But enough chattering. It’s about time to cook!
Kitchen
Ghost chef: Kalim, there are enough ingredients to make this recipe three times. In the unlikely event that you fail, we’ll be fine. Relax and enjoy the process.
Kalim: Gotcha! I’ll do my best!
Ghost chef: First, we should cut the ingredients. I’ll have you cut the ginger, garlic, onions and tomatoes. Let’s start with the tomato. Put the flat side on the chopping board. That makes it easier to cut.
Kalim: The flat side… Like this?
Ghost chef: Yes! Now you take the knife with your dominant hand. Hold the tomato down with your other hand so it won’t move when cutting. Put the knife in front of you and press down the middle, while moving back and forth to cut it. Try to use big movements instead of force.
Kalim: Softly with big movements… Wow, I cut the tomato in half!
Ghost chef: Yes, well done! Continue cutting it like that.
Ghost chef: Okay, we finished cutting everything. Next up is…
Kalim: Hm? Hey, chef. There are still some uncut ingredients on the table, can’t we use them?
Ghost chef: Those were just spares in case you failed. You can add ingredients to your preference if you want to?
Kalim: Really? I’m going to use everything!
Ghost chef: E-Everything!? That’s about three times more than the recipe calls for. If you do that our next step might become problematic… Are you sure?
Kalim: Yeah. The more ingredients, the more our guests can eat to their heart's content. Okay, I’m cutting the rest!
Ghost chef: We have now finished cutting up all the spares. Next up is a vital part of biryani’s flavor… the curry! First, heat oil in a saucepan. Stir-fry the green cardamom, clove and cinnamon.
Kalim: Gotcha. ...Ah, wait! You know, I think it’d be splendid if we add more spices, considering we also added more ingredients.
Ghost chef: Right. If you added three times the ingredients, we should also add three times the spices…
Kalim: Great! Okay I’m adding all the spices!
Ghost chef: What?
/Pouring noise
Ghost chef: (H-HE POURED IN ALL THE SPICES~~!)
Kalim: Hahaha! I’m sure this will turn out great with all these ingredients and spices! Let’s continue cooking!
Chapter 2
Cafetaria - Judging Venue
Ruggie: Lalalalala~ Man, bein’ chosen as judge is so great for my food expenses. I’m so looking forward to it. I can already smell the aromas from the kitchen… BLERGH!! T-This intense smell… are those spices!? What the heck happened there!?
Kalim: Hey, Ruggie! So you’re the judge. That’s great! I got some biryani to serve.
Ruggie: No… I have to judge Kalim’s food…
Kalim: Here you go, bon appétit.
Ruggie: Bon appétit, he says… wait, why is there a mountain spilling off this large plate!? How many servings are there!?
Kalim: Uh, I used all the spare ingredients… I wonder how many servings there are? Anyway, it was a huge pot!
Ruggie: O-Okay. (Just as I expected, this seems spicy…) But not eating it would be a waste… I just gotta dig in!
/Chomp
Ruggie: HHHHHHHOOOOOT!! This is too spicy! Is this a punishment!?
Kalim: A-Ah? I wanted you to eat your fill, so I put in a lot of ingredients but did I overdo it? … Ruggie! You’re dripping in sweat after only one bite of the biryani! Hm… and Trey even told me that thinking about the preferences of the guests is important in hospitality. If you don’t like biryani I should just serve another…
Ruggie: ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Eatin’ what’s served is my creed. Even if I take it home, I’ll finish it! I’m very happy that there are so many ingredients… I’ll be fine, I’ll eat it!
Kalim: H-Hey. This is the first time you made such a cornered expression!? To think I made such an inedible thing for you to persist like that… Sorry, Ruggie! I’m not used to cooking…
Ghost chef: Oh, calm down, you two! It’s fine to remake it instead of being pessimistic.
Kalim: If it weren’t that spicy you should be able to enjoy it right!?
Ruggie: Now that’s a wonderful idea!
Kalim: Okay, let me make something that you won’t regret! But how should I remake it?
Ghost chef: Right, how about this?
/Placing cutlery down
Ruggie: Hmpf… I’m so full! I’m satisfied! And the way you wrapped the spicy biryani in an omelet like omurice, and how you stewed it in coconut milk. That got me. Kalim, your do-overs were all amazing.
Kalim: Great! What a relief.
Ruggie: By the way, can I take the leftovers home?
Kalim: Of course!
Ruggie: Shshshs. I won’t have to worry about food for a few days with these!
Kalim: … While the biryani was a failure, I still learned a lot of skills and satisfied Ruggie. Thank you, chef!

How to Find Love
Summary: Iwaizumi is on a quest to find love with an old friend. What can he do to get there?
Iwaizumi x fem!reader/Oc || Read it on A03
Genre : romance, friends to lovers
Hajime Iwaizumi ran into the cafe, eyes wide and panicky. “I’m already twenty minutes late for the date.”
As he composed himself before he entered the place, he took a deep breath. He was determined to enjoy this date because it might be their last. Hiromi had never taken lateness kindly.
“Gomen, the meeting ran longer than expected,“ he said, nodding his head into a bow, too embarrassed to meet her eyes, “I’m so sorry.”
She looked up from her books with a weary smile. Beside her was a pile of four or five books, some of which were beginning to yellow, meticulously tabbed with colorful post-its.
“You still made it,” she said, closing her book “I usually walk out if my date was a full hour late.”
It was a Thursday. She had an afternoon at the library while he had an early off (if it wasn’t for his work meeting). Neither of them worked traditional 9 to5 jobs. He began to wonder if seeing each other would be easier if they did. Iwa was leaving on a Friday for Osaka for the rest of the weekend. He was a physical trainer for a professional volleyball team, which meant that he travelled with them during their season.
They called for a menu and began to order what would be their dinner.
“How’s work?” he asked, surveying her through the menu.
“It’s a lot of reading,” she gestured towards her stack of books, “But we’re at the beginning of a new research-heavy campaign so it’s normal. How about you?"
“Mmm…it’s still the start of the season so most of the team is quite healthy. Some of them are a little excited so we’re just trying to reign them in to keep them from straining themselves.” he said, thumbing through the pages.
He had settled for a hamburg curry rice while she had gone for a bowl of tuna pasta. She looked distracted.
“What’s up?” he asked, leaning into the table now that the niceties were done with.
“I like my job. I like my team. But why do I feel like I’m just grinding day in and day out." she sighed, resting her chin on her books, “There’s got to be more in adult life than this."
“You’ve got to find the reason out on your own because your employer won’t do it for you. Not that I’m qualified to give advice or anything.” he said, looking up from his drink.
“I know,” she murmured, her head rested between her folded arms “It’s just so difficult to find the energy for it sometimes.”
Iwaizumi nodded. He knew what she meant. No one job could fulfill all his desires for accomplishment. He liked his job, but it wasn’t a perfect job. He wished that he didn’t need to spend so many weekends away from home.
Man, this date was sobering.
“You sound burnt out. Maybe take it slower at work?” he quirked his head to match the angle of hers.
“What is it that you want to do that you’re not doing for work?” he asked. Despite less than a year in the workforce, she already looked so glum.
She pulled herself up and swept her books aside, “I don’t know to be honest. Within the next two years, I just want to be published in other big publications. It doesn’t have to be necessarily on food, more like the stuff I write for fun. The stuff I’m willing to freelance while I have a day job, y’know?”
“Like what?”
Their order had arrived. She stabbed her fork into her pasta and gently twirled it around.
“The New York Times has a column called Modern Love where you write a long essay about some type of love. It doesn’t have to be romantic. It can be platonic, familial, or even failed love as long as it is set in modern day. I’ve been meaning to write about my failed relationships.” she said thoughtfully.
Iwa choked on his first spoonful.
“Well, if this doesn’t work out, I can at least write about it. Get three hundred dollars and buy you dinner to thank you for the experience.” she laughed drily.
“Are you always this pessimistic on your first dates?” he coughed, taking a sip of water “Either ways, I’m glad to be of help.”
She perked up a bit and grinned. Her whole face lit up when she smiled. A wave of warmth washed over him.
“Send me a copy when you get published.” he added, “I want to see what you write about me.”
“I’m definitely going to writet that you were late on the first date.” she said without skipping a beat. She was grateful that they had chosen this cafe. There were not too many people even if it was dinner time, yet the ambient noise that filled the air kept their pauses from being too silent.
Iwa stopped eating and squinted his eyes at her, “You are not gonna let me live this down, huh?" She winked at him with a glint in her eye. He smiled in response.
He couldn’t care less about what the New York Times was but she was evidently fascinated by it. He wasn’t going to own up to uncultured swine he was on a first date. He had already been late.
“Anyways tell me more about this Modern Love.” he settled back into his dinner.
She pulled out her phone and began typing, “The Modern Love column came out with questions to help get to know someone. This could be a fun date activity.”
“Sure, you want to give it a go?”
She shoved the phone in his face and scrolled through the questions. “There are three sets of questions. Each set more intimate than the last. You can choose from the first set.”
Iwa lightly held the phone, his fingertips grazing the back of her hand. He chose the first question that caught his eye.
“Number 4. What would constitute a ‘perfect’ day for you?” he read out loud. Hiromi took her phone back and read the question to herself.
“What’s your answer?” she asked.
“I just got back, I hadn’t figured out what a perfect day would be like here.” he shrugged sincerely.
She snorted loudly, “What a cop out answer!”
Iwa looked up and thought for a bit, “A day spent walking around in the city…maybe a day that starts with a morning jog and a hot unrushed breakfast after. Catching up with friends sounds good too.”
Hiromi nodded. She was fully absorbed as he talked. It was like she was going through the scenes of his day in his mind as he described them.
“What about you?” he asked, snapping out of her out of her reverie.
“A day at the market,” she said quietly. ”Any market day is a good day really.”
“To be honest, it doesn’t depend on the activities so much at times. The people you’re with is definitely important. A day at the market can still be terrible with the wrong company.” she added.
“I wasn’t subpar last weekend, was I?” he asked.
“No...you weren’t.” she replied a little more shyly than usual.
They moved onto the next question.
“What roles do love and affection play in your life?” she read out loud, “Doesn’t have to be romantic again.”
Iwaizumi inhaled sharply. That was such a loaded question.
“If you’ll use this for an article and it gets published, you better buy me dinner someplace nice.” he tutted.
“Then make this one good.” she smirked.
Iwaizumi stopped eating for a few minutes to think through the question. Before he answered, he closed his eyes and breathed out slowly.
“It defined my entire career in volleyball. My best friend and I watched a game and we kind of chose to go into the same school team after that because we were both so obsessed with the sport. Our connection was almost telepathic. We barely used signals when it was just the two of us. We basically ran off instinct.” said he softly, his eyes reminiscing a different time.
“Although we went our separate ways after high school, I spent so much time in volleyball that it defined a huge part of who I was too. I mean, if I didn’t play volleyball, I would probably be in another sport, but I’d still think I’d be different, y’know?”
You could tell he was avoiding the word “love.” Iwa was not one to be vulnerable.
“In college when I was in my first serious relationship, it was the type of love that gave me confidence and assurance. But I guess it wasn’t enough…for me to say it deeply impacted my later choices on career and other decisions, unlike volleyball.”
“I can’t help but feel that any defining…relationship I have romantically will be weighed against with my time with volleyball…my first real love…" he tried to laugh it off, but you felt the weight off his words, “And I’ve been lucky enough to have enough love in my life that I don’t need to constantly be in a relationship to feel complete.”
A moment of silence fell in between the two.
“That’s a lot to heap on a relationship.” she whispered in contemplation.
Iwa awkwardly scrambled for damage control, “…no pressure.” was all he managed to say.
“So why try to date? When it’s so tough to find someone who can match up with volleyball?” she asked.
“Companionship?” he shrugged, “It’s still nice to date around.”
“And you’re…nice. I’ve been wanting to date you since we were in college. I’ve liked you for a long time…” his entire face flushed pink.
Her eyes fluttered wide open. Since college? Is he serious?
“Our friends were right,” she said in a hush, “You did have a thing for me. I thought they were just teasing us.”
“You had a boyfriend back then and when you broke up with him, I was seeing someone else.” he exhaled, looking her earnestly in the eye, “Wasn’t it obvious to you?”
Iwaizumi couldn’t tell if Hiromi just didn’t want to speak or was too busy contemplating. She was too stunned to speak.
“It felt like fate seeing you on the plane.”
A million things were going through her mind, she slowly opened her mouth, “Now that we’ve been on two half dates, what’s it like? Is this what you’d thought it would be?”
“College is very different from now, but the short answer is yes.” he nodded, rolling his shoulders back. “Everything just clicks. I’m so comfortable with you. It’s so easy for us to talk. I like you just as much as I did in college…I just really like you. Time hasn’t changed that at all.”
Hiromi looked overwhelmed. She was unable to look him in the eye. She was barely getting to know him romantically and he had long been decided about his feelings for her.
“Do you wanna ask if they sell alcohol here? You look like you need a drink.” he joked. Hiromi didn’t look like she heard him.
"This is so intense for a first date.” she shook her head in what seemed like regret.
“We can stop,” he gently interjected, “We can talk about something else.”
She finally looked up to him and whispered, “Hajime, you’ve just dumped a lot of pressure on me.”
“Sorry, didn’t mean to do that,” he smiled apologetically, “Anyways, I’m aware that we’re both at different…stages of attraction. Besides, I think this would be way more awkward if we both were pining.”
“Wouldn’t that be sweeter?” she asked.
“Way too sappy for me.” he waved with his hand. Hiromi let out a small chuckle. Iwa secretly sighed in relief.
——————————————————————————— After dinner, they headed to the arcade to blow off some steam. Iwaizumi offered to carry some of her books to which he somewhat regretted. Her books were like rocks. How the hell was she lugging them on her own in the city?
“I could carry them on my own if it’s too heavy.” she offered.
Iwaizumi looked at her incredulously. She was at least half a foot shorter and much smaller in build. His biceps weren’t going to buck in front of her.
They wandered around the arcade for a bit, unsure what to do first. Iwa silently prayed they didn’t have to do any dancing. Just when they were about to decide on the claw machine, Hiromi pointed towards a small karaoke booth at the corner of her eye.
“Let’s go in there.” she tugged at his jacket.
Iwaizumi flipped through the songs. None of them seemed to be in Japanese. All of them were in English.
“Did you pick up a default english karaoke song?” she asked, browsing through the catalogue. The room was clearly designed for kids. It was so small their knees touched and Iwa could barely sit up without hitting his head on the ceiling.
“Nah,” he shook his head, “I don’t really sing…in English. Any suggestions?”
Hiromi typed in the number of a song.
“I’m about to introduce you to your first usable English karaoke song.” she grinned at him mischievously. Iwa looked at her suspiciously.
The opening notes started to play—some acoustic guitar and a trumpet. The song sounded…Mexican? For the longest time there were no lyrics on the screen. Hiromi swayed to beat as her eyes were glued to the screen. When the song finally began to hit what sounded like the chorus, the music paused for a second.
“TEQUILA!” she yelled into the mic.
Iwaizumi was so startled he jumped up and hit his head on the ceiling. Hiromi was giggling uncontrollably.
“That’s it?!” he exclaimed.
“Yeah,” she laughed, pressing the mic towards him, “You try on the next chorus.”
When the trumpets began playing, Iwa readied himself. The song hits its familiar pause soon enough and he pulls the mic closer to his lips.
“Tequila?” he said tentatively.
“With more conviction, Hajime!” she urged, taking back the mic. On the third chorus, she moved closer to him so they could share the mic.
The music hits its third pause, they looked at each other and yelled, “TEQUILA!”
They both grinned and laughed, almost as if the act of singing about alcohol was like a drink in itself. He could feel her shins pressed against him as she continued to sway for the music. A glint in her eye flickered as she nudged him to dance along with her.
Iwaizumi wasn’t going to refuse. Especially not on their first date. He swayed what he could on the tiny box while the song lasted.
————————————————————————— At the end of the night, they both sat in the train waiting to get off on their respective stops. The carriage shuttled back and forth, pushing and pulling their bodies back and forth into each other.
“Hajime,” she tapped him on his shoulder, “We didn’t finish the last set. Let’s do a quick one before I get off.”
He nodded, “Pick one we can answer with just one word.”
Hiromi swiftly browsed the list, before looking up.
“Finish the sentence, ‘Right now, we are both feeling…’"
Their faces were both so close they could feel the heat of each other’s breath. The back of their hands were touching, but neither dared to reach out or pull away.
“Hopeful.” whispered Hiromi, an evident earnestness in her voice. She was fighting off her shyness just long enough to look him in the eye when she talked.
Iwa smiled, “Smitten.”
Before she could react, the train jolted as it shuffled towards her station. The train stopped at Hiromi’s station and she got up from her seat, taking the books from Iwa’s arms.
He followed her to the exit and watched her as she got off. She gave a small wave from the platform while she watched the doors closed.
Iwa was tempted to press his hands onto the window, unwilling to end their time for the evening. His last sight of her was her smile when the train plunged itself into the night.
“Did he start out his day at the market with a morning jog?” she asked herself, watching the train swiftly pull away.
Iwaizumi took a deep breath. The night had gone differently from how he thought the date would proceed. For one thing, he didn’t expect to confess so early into the relationship.
He took his phone and curiously googled the questions she mentioned.
It turns out the title of the New York Times article was not “Questions to Get to Know Your Date” as Hiromi had led him to believe. Instead, it was titled, “Thirty Six Questions That Lead to Love”.
“Huh,” he said to himself. He shut off the screen to his phone.
36 was too much. In his opinion 3 was enough.

A War Hero’s Cry (Persona 5/Royal)
Warning for some possible spoilers. Nothing super important to the main plot but still, here’s the warning!
A/N: This is my very first P5 piece, I’m excited to share it! I love writing and want to get better at it, so I’m very open to suggestions or comments!
Warning for mild cursing.
Ships: None
Word count: 2,455
---
These were the types of mornings that kept him going. The mornings where he didn’t have to shuttle into a cramped subway, only to arrive at his destination and listen to lectures about various topics on which he’d studied before. It was also a time between targets, to play it safe and just wait for another shitty adult to show their true colors so their Palace and Treasure can be claimed by the Phantom Thieves.
These mornings, where Ren could enjoy the peace and tranquility that came with a skillfully made cup of coffee, the smell of curry preparation for the day’s customers, and the sound of Sojiro humming while he worked. These mornings are where he draws that cool and collected mentality required to be the leader of such a talented group of thieves.
He inhaled, taking in all the sensations around him, but was slightly startled by the sound of the bell’s chime, signaling a customer. Perplexed, as the store hadn’t opened yet, he turned to find Futaba wondering into the café. He exhaled and grinned, able to tell right away she’d just woken up: her amber-orange hair was still disheveled from sleep and her eyes were still drowsy looking. Not to mention she strolled in with her slippers and a pair of plush-looking pajama pants, black with green stars printed on them. They suited her.
She slumped up on the stool next to Ren and yawned in place of her usual loud and energetic “Good Morning!” while she rested her head on the bar.
“Well,” Sojiro started, not bothering to hold back a chuckle at the scene, “Look who’s decided to join us among the living.” Though teasing, there was a type of sincerity there that gave away the warmness he felt for his adopted daughter. She groaned groggily in response, pulling her hood up over her head and face.
“Long night?” Ren asked casually. He enjoyed Futaba’s company regardless; he’d grown fond of her quirks and eccentric nature, and became something of an older brother figure to her. But he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t grateful that she was still calm and quiet at the moment.
“Mmmhmm…” she groaned in response. Ren nodded and took a sip of his coffee, counting down mentally, “Three…two…one…” Sure enough, on “one” Futaba lifted her head, hood still lazily hanging onto the top, and she began to explain.
“Well last night I got bored, so I started browsing the Phan-site and looking around for potential targets and was trying to find out more about the mental shutdowns, but then I got a Discuss app notification from my Herd of Heroes team asking if I wanted to help them in a tournament. Of course, I couldn’t just leave them, my strategy and expertise are the backbone of the team! So…”
Ren and Sojiro shared a knowing smirk. Classic Futaba. Sojiro shook his head in mock exasperation.
“Staying up all night isn’t healthy, you know,” Ren began, “You ought to think about fixing your sleep schedule. For your sake and for your teammates, both on and offline. Are you listening?” He asked, poking her side to make sure he had her attention. But now she had his and Sojiro’s, as neither expected the high-pitched squeak she made.
Ren chuckled and raised an eyebrow. “What was that?”
Futaba looked a lot more awake, now that her eyes were widened, almost panicked. “N-Nothing! You just startled me, that’s all. Don’t you know its rude to pick on people, especially when they’ve just conquered ten different Herds of Heroes? I’m a war hero!”
“You’re also a pain sometimes,” Ren teased, poking at her again and eliciting the same sound.
“Ren, quit it!” Futaba whined, wrapping her arms around her sides for protection. But she was so preoccupied dealing with Ren’s antics, she didn’t notice Sojiro make his way around the bar and behind her stool, placing his hands threateningly on her sides. She was already trying to hold back the titters that began bubbling up.
“Futaba, you’ve been kept up in your room so long, I forgot you were ticklish,” Sojiro started, swiftly willing his wiggling fingers up and down her sides. She couldn’t offer much resistance as she immediately burst out in giggles and tried to grab for his wrists.
“NOOHOHO, SOHOHJIROOHOHO!” Futaba whined, not being able to say much else. She helplessly cackled and tried to push his hands away, doing an awful lot of squirming in the process.
“I remember your mom telling me she’d chase you around the house sometimes,” he recalled. While telling his story he wrapped his arms around her middle and held her back against is chest, both to better trap her in his ticklish hold and to ensure she didn’t fall off the stool. Using this new leverage, he scurried lightly over her small belly and belly button, causing a shriek, another noise neither had heard from her. Ren figured his peaceful morning was over at this point and just embraced the silly nature the room had adopted.
“SOHOOHOJIEHEROOHOO DOOHOHON’T!! BWAHAHA!” She continued to cackle and writhe while he nonchalantly continued his story. Ren could tell Sojiro was rather enjoying his position right now.
“You’d ask her to play so many times in a day, and when you wouldn’t let up she’d run around the house with you until she finally caught you. Then… she’d get you!” he finished, adopting a slightly more sinister tone for emphasis as he quickly shot his fingers up to the poor child’s underarms, switching rapidly from fluttering teasingly and vibrating his fingertips there. She jumped and squealed, but was unable to do much else in his hold.
“NOHAHAT THEERAAHEHEHAA! SOJIEHEEHAHA!” Futaba couldn’t even beg properly anymore as she threw her head back onto his shoulder, trying desperately to squirm her way out of his grip. “D’you have a strategy for getting out of this one, war hero?” Sojiro teased, causing a deeper blush on Futaba’s already reddened face.
“SOOOHOHOJEEEOROO, I CAHAHN’T!!” Not long after that did Sojiro let up, but held her still for a beat or two. Again, to make sure she didn’t fall. Futaba breathed rapidly and leaned back on Sojiro, who will never admit how much his heart swelled at the act. He chuckled again and released the child, ruffling her already messy hair.
Ren wasn’t quite sure what to do besides sit on the sidelines and watch the commotion unfold. His own parents, while supportive and caring, were never really physically affectionate toward him. He couldn’t recall if he even was ticklish. But he chuckled contently. “So, about being a war hero…”
“YOU! Don’t even say anything! YOU started it and DIDN’T BOTHER TO HELP ME! Some leader you are!” Futaba exclaimed, clearly regaining her energy as she stood quickly and drilled quick and relentless pokes to his sides. She’d only expected to get her point across but was so much more pleased when Ren sharply inhaled and flailed to keep her hands away from him. Well, that answered his question.
“Mwehehehe… Perfect!” She snickered evilly. Ren jumped back from his stool and realized he was cornered: Futaba stood between him and the front door, and the increasingly mischievous glare from Sojiro wasn’t at all comforting—it was clear he had no intention of helping Ren out of this.
Suddenly, the Phantom Thief leader did the unexpected: turned and fled up the stairs.
“HEY! Get back here, coward!” Futaba called after him, but wasn’t as fast, especially since Ren could easily climb two stairs at a time.
“I might be able to maneuver my way back down the stairs and out the door,” he thought, being sure to give himself some space as Futaba reached his room. Though he had the upper hand in skill, Futaba looked determined, almost as much as when she’s in a Palace.
“I’ll show you a war hero!” she declared, and lunged for the teen, who dodged her with relative ease. But it happened quickly: one minute he had a clear path to the stairs, and the next he was turned around with his arms pinned to his back. Sojiro chuckled.
“I didn’t think the leader would be so predictable, but Futaba read you like a book. I bet her team would be lost without her,” he commented. “And don’t look so surprised. I used to be with the Feds, remember? Catching runners just comes with the territory.” Ren swore there was some giddiness in Sojiro’s voice, he must be having fun with this. But the boy didn’t struggle against him. In wit and leadership, Ren might have the upper hand. And he was strong, too, from all the training with Ryuji and previous missions. But in pure manpower, and given the position we was in, he hadn’t a chance against Sojiro.
“Hey, you’re being awful quiet for someone who just got captured,” Futaba remarked, getting Ren out of his head and back to the moment; the moment Sojiro lightheartedly pushed the boy onto his couch so Futaba could pounce and begin her ticklish assault, starting strong by pushing up the hem of his shirt and scurrying her fingers on his bare stomach. Ren gritted his teeth, trying not to let out the giggles that were bubbling up. He went to grab at her wrists, only for Sojiro to grab his first and pin them over his head, allowing the redheaded tech-wiz full access to his torso.
“Damnhihit!” Ren muttered, trying to break Sojiro’s grip.
“Was that a laugh, mighty leader?” Futaba teased, sticking one wiggling finger in his belly button. Ren inhaled sharply again and arched his back reflexively, ironically giving Futaba better access to the sensitive area. But he shook his head violently and groaned to cover any indication of escaped giggles.
“Yeah, THAT’S convincing,” Futaba said with an eye roll, changing tactics by pinching along his sides until she reached his ribs. The moment her fingers swiped along his bottom ribs, he twisted and struggled, trying desperately to throw her off of him. But with her straddling his thighs and Sojiro holding his arms, that was not going to be an easy feat.
“Well? Was it a laugh? Is the feared leader of the Phantom Thieves ticklish?”
“Doohoohn’t Futaba!” He muttered, unable to keep his giggling completely at bay anymore while he felt his face heat up in forming a blush.
“Now I think that was a laugh,” Sojiro teased, encouraging Futaba to go in for the kill.
“Dahahamit, let mehehe go, old maahan!” Ren said. Out loud. He did not mean to say that out loud. He was trying so hard not to laugh that he didn’t (or rather, couldn’t) think, and the words just fell out. Futaba stopped tickling and both children looked to Sojiro. He just looked blankly at Ren, and took both his wrists into one hand.
“Oh ho, you’re about to get wrecked!” Futaba exclaimed giddily, waiting for Sojiro’s move.
“Sir, I didn’t mean that, I’m sorrEHEHEEHHEE! NOOHOHHOHAAHAHA!!” With his free hand, Sojiro curled and wriggled his fingers into the teen’s rib cage, and the dam holding back Ren’s giggles burst into a loud, unhindered belly laugh. Neither Futaba nor Sojiro had ever heard their quiet and composed LeBlanc tenant laugh, not like this, and they both chuckled: it seemed it was contagious.
“S-STOOHOHOP LAHAHUGHING AT M-MMEEEHEHE! AHH! HAHAHA!” He begged, and screeched in surprise when he felt Futaba pinch and scratch his bottommost ribs on the side that Sojiro wasn’t absolutely tormenting.
Sojiro switched up his methods a bit, now vibrating his fingertips in the space between Ren’s ribs and underarms, earning another shriek. “I can’t believe this guy is the one everyone’s fussing over. He looks pretty harmless to me!” The caregiver taunted. Ren shook his head, as if fighting the ever-darkening redness from appearing on his cheeks.
“So our fearless leader can be taken down with a couple good tickles, I see. Mwehehe, wait until I tell the others~” Futaba teased, and raked her nails from his ribs down his sides, and scurried them haphazardly all over his bare belly. Ren threw his head back in renewed cackles, his heels digging into the couch behind the sadistic girl.
“NOOHOO, DOHOHOHON’T T-TELL TH-THEEHEHEM! AHAHACK! SOJIHEHERO, I CAAHAHN’T AHAHA!” Ren begged as his guardian released his wrists, only to quickly attack the hollows of his underarms, kneading and vibrating in the region, and making the raven-haired boy go into hysterics, if he wasn’t already. He clamped his arms down quickly, trapping Sojiro’s hands.
“Well now my hands are stuck here. I guess I’d better make the most of it,” he taunted further, snickering at the continuous stream of boyish laugher he was eliciting from the usually stoic kid.
“DOHOHN’T TEHEHEASE MEEHEEHE, PLEEHEEASE, NOOHOHOHO!”
“Oh, now he’s learned some manners!” Sojiro responded spiritedly. Futaba relented finally, figuring her request for revenge had been satisfied. Plus, Ren looked like he could use a little mercy right now.
“Ya know, you look kinda cute like this! Maybe if I can get a picture, or a video!-”
“DOHON’T YOU DAHAHARE!”
“I know they would enjoy this dirt I’ve got on you!”
“IHEHE’LL EHEHEND YOOHOHOU!”
“Ya know,” Sojiro started, “you aren’t in any place to be making threats. Or to be calling me old, only I can do that.”
“I SAIHEHED I’M SORRYEHEHE!” Ren spat out, his laughter starting to go silent. Sojiro chuckled again and finally released the teen from his grip. They watched as Ren greedily gasped for air and rubbed his eyes to find he’d been crying mirthful tears.
“I guess I’m sorry too, I think I got carried away there. You all right?” Sojiro asked, motioning for Futaba to get off of his legs. He nodded, still breathing heavily, but starting steadying.
“Futaba was right, you are kinda cute like that,” Sojiro teased, and the teen covered his faced and groaned, followed by a muffled “I am NOT.”
“Don’t go pouting, you’re still in a pretty vulnerable position,” Sojiro replied, offering a quick poke to his side, causing a jolt and a lighter giggle. The guardian looked at his watch and sighed.
“Great, Ren, you made me late for opening up shop,” he muttered, but there was no malice behind it.
“Oh yeah, gotta open the doors for your daily swarm of customers,” Futaba commented half-heartedly.
“Hey! I have my morning regulars, young lady.” Sojiro retorted. “You need to watch your tone. You saw what happened to the last guy that had something smart to say.” Ren groaned, and finally sat up, looking at the other two people occupying his room. He watched them continue their argument as he shook his head in exasperation with a grin.

“Go Stand In the Corner”
A3 characters reaction to being told by the director to "Stand in the corner."
🌸Spring Troupe🌸
Sakuya Sakuma- This is Sakuya we’re talking about. What could he have done to get sent to the corners? Well, he just kept forgetting things. At first it was his script. Then, when he returned he realized he was wearing his normal clothes. He left got changed and came back. All was well and they could finally get started. Until he realized he had grabbed the wrong script for the wrong play.
“U-uh, Director?” “Yes Sakuya?” “I grabbed the wrong script...”
The Director just sighed. “Go...Stand in the corner and collect yourself.”
Sakuya looked like a kicked puppy but, complied. He stood in the corner and waited for the director to release him. When released he apologized and went to go get his script, making sure everything was PERFECT before heading back.
Masumi Usui- Fucking Heartbroken. His Crime? Loving too much. Today the Director got frustrated with his constant compliments and advances, they told him to go stand in corner away from them. Masumi watches them from the mirrors reflection. Once released he’s a model actor, perfect behavior, remembers all of his lines, and perfect choreography. Anything to get on the Directors good side again.
Itaru Chigasaki- “F!” He’s actually kind of pissed. He was playing a game on his phone, old habits are hard to break. He missed his cue one too many times due to this and the Director told him to stand in the corner, without his phone. They just don’t understand he hasn’t used up all of his in-game energy yet and you’ve gotta maximize that shit. “The more you complain, the more time you get in the corner.” All Itaru could do was pout like a child and stand there, without a phone. It was agony. It was only five minutes.
Tsuzuru Minagi- He was tired and needed a nap. The Director let him shut his eyes for a few minutes.
Citron- Just kept talking. An important scene was going on? Citron was talking. Stretching? Talking. Just talk talk talking. When he was told to stand in the corner you’d think you’d told him he was gonna die. “Nooo! Please! Have mercy!” He begged, apparently in his homeland being sent to the corner means you’re being exiled and dragged out by the mouth of tigers.
☀️Summer Troupe☀️
The summer troupe had been a lot more rowdier today than usual. Perhaps it was the summer heat that was making them act like a bunch of preschoolers but the Director had had enough. If they were gonna act like children, then they were gonna be treated like children.
"ALL OF YOU! GO STAND IN THE CORNER! NOW." The Director bellowed.
They all stopped and looked at the director in shock, then shifted eyes at each other and then back to the director, they looked serious. The summer troupe members all awkwardly shuffled to a corner in the room and waited out their punishment.
Tenma Sumeragi- "This is so humiliating." He'd whine. He's a professional god dammit, and here he is standing in the corner like a child. Soon enough he realizes that he's the leader of the Summer Troupe and should’ve realized the directors frustrations sooner. When he’s finally allowed to leave the corner he apologizes and gets the troupe on track.
Yuki Rurikawa- Doesn’t even know how to respond, just stands there facing the corner, arms crossed and rolling his eyes at Tenma’s whining. You’d think they’d choose spots on opposite sides of the room. Nope. They chose corners adjacent from each other.
Kazunari Miyoshi- #FreeMiyoshi20XX is now trending, Brought his phone with him to the corner and he’s blogging to his followers. ‘why you in jail man?’ ‘I was being a dick. lol.’
Misumi Ikaruga- He’s so Happy! In the corner he becomes one with the triangle. if he didn’t have to eat he’d never leave. It reminds of his childhood, always in the corner, Isolated from the other children, but it’s okay! He’s got his triangles and maybe one day they’ll appreciate triangles too!”
Muku Sakisaka- Terrified when the Director raised their voice at him, he starts apologizing and calling himself worthless junk but the Director just repeated themselves. One problem though, the training rooms a rectangle and all the other corners are taken. The director sends him out to the hallway. Sakyo walked by him and asked what the hell he was doing?
“I was being a wet sock puppet with no buttons and the Director made me stand in the corner.” Muku said with watery eyes. Sakyo just continued his walk.
🍁Autumn Troupe🍁
Banri Settsu- Yeah, He and Juza were fighting, AGAIN. But did he deserve to be treated like a child, No. He was Banri Fuckin’ Settsu, the LEADER of the Autumn troupe, and the baddest bitch for miles around. He was trying to tell the director that but kept getting time added to his punishment, had to stand in the corner for 20 minutes.
Juza Hyodo- “Tch.” He complied much more easily than Settsu. Didn’t really care about the punishment, it gave him some time to cool his head and calm his nerves. Was only in the corner for 5 minutes. Once he got out het kept a close eye on Settsu to make sure he behaved.
“Director, Settsu’s flippin’ us off.”
“That’s another 2 minutes Settsu.”
“FUCK!”
He had fun.
Sakyo Furuchi - “No.” He’s a grown ass man, he doesn’t get sent to the corner.
“Yes!” Responded the Director. They had been fighting about the budget of the next play and things were heated.
“No.” He responded. Sakyo and the Director glared at each other for a moment.
“Fine then! Sakoda!” They Called.
Sadoka bursts into the room “Yeah Boss Lady?”
“Go stand in the corner!”
Sadoka looked confused but complied. The Director turned to Sakyo “You did this.” Sakyo just sighed and went back to the budget.
Taichi Nanao- He kept getting distracted. Was just off his game today. The Director gave him a few minutes in the corner to get himself sorted.
Omi Fushimi- Made a comment about curry that the Director would not tolerate. Was Jokingly told to go stand in the corner and he did. When he was finally allowed out he faked a tearful apology.
❄Winter Troupe❄
Tsumugi Tsukioka- I can’t think of a reason for him to get sent to the corner, but if he did he would reflect on his actions like the goody goody he is.
Tasuku Takato- He was taking his acting more seriously than usual and it was stressing the group out. To lighten the mood the director sent him to the corner. He stood there, and then started doing wall push-ups out of boredom.
Homare Arisgawa- “Solitude, Isolation, Confinement, Silence....” Like Citron he wouldn’t stop talking. Finally the director told him to just stand in the corner, Homare just talks to himself, making up new poems about his unfair imprisonment. “OHOOHOHO Director you’re attempt to silence me with a cruel and unusual punish has failed! Instead my eyes have been open to a new darker and mature form of poetry!”
Hisoka Mikage- You can’t really put him in the corners as a punishment, he’ll just fall asleep.
Azuma Yukishiro-” Oh? the Director’s giving me a punishment? How interesting~” The Director got flustered from his flirting and sent him to the corner. “I wonder what other things our Director has too offer~”

Headcanons for Bakugou, Todoroki and Shinsou for getting set up on a date with their crush atg Tokyo Disney. Oh man, I'm not even a foodie but I would kill to have the food there. I could imagine Todoroki had never even been before
this is such i sweet request?? 🥺
Characters: Bakugou Katsuki, Todoroki Shouto and Shinsou Hitoshi
Type: Headcanons
Bakugou Katsuki
☁️Bakugou had been to Tokyo Disneyland a lot of times when he was younger.
☁️So when he set up by the Bakusquad to go with you, he actually knows where to take you.
☁️He's a little annoyed his friend group set him up without him even knowing, but he would deal with them later.
☁️He totally prepared.
☁️"Okay, first stop Space Mountain!" He grinned, walking towards his favorite attraction.
☁️"Isn't that a rollercoaster?"
☁️"It's not a rollercoaster, it's THE rollercoaster."
☁️The line wasn't that long and both you and Bakugou got in fairly quickly.
☁️The ride was dark, yet incredibly beautiful.
☁️It could be a little scary at times and you found yourself holding to Bakugou's arm for protection.
☁️"That wasn't so bad!" You said once the ride was over and both of you were out.
☁️"I told you, idiot." He said, trying to ignore the fact his crush was still holding onto his arm. "Let's go grab something to eat."
☁️By the end of the meal, you had Minnie ears on (Bakugou refused to wear Mickey's ears) and a stomach full of Baymax shaped food.
☁️The rest of the day went as smoothly as possible, and you didn't even notice that it was getting really dark.
☁️You and Bakugou had just bought some cotton candy and to your surprise, he just sat on the sidewalk and pointed at the spot near his.
☁️"Why are we sitting on the floor? Why is EVERYONE sitting on the floor." You ask.
☁️"Just shut up and wait!" He said.
☁️Suddenly, every street light shut down and some music started playing.
☁️That's when you noticed various lights coming in your direction.
☁️"The nighttime parade..." You whispered. It was something you only saw on the tv, and seeing the gigantic floats so up close almost seemed like a dream.
☁️You were like Rapunzel during the lanterns scene, paying no mind to whatever was happening around you.
☁️And Bakugou was looking at you like nothing else mattered.
☁️And at that moment it didn't.
☁️"I like you." The words came out before he could even stop himself.
☁️His words woke you up from the trance you were in.
☁️You stared deeply into his red eyes, and before he could tell you to forget about what he said, you smiled at him.
☁️"I like you too Bakugou... I really do!"
☁️Both of you watched until the parade was over and walked back to the dorms hand in hand that day.
Todoroki Shouto
☁️This poor boy has never been to Disney before.
☁️The whole class (excluding Bakugou) planned to spend the day at Disneyland during the weekend.
☁️But when the day actually came, everyone had the most creative excuses to not come.
☁️So there you in Tokyo Disneyland, with your long time crush, Todoroki Shouto.
☁️You've been to Disneyland once and can still remember some places.
☁️So you decided to give Todoroki the day of his life.
☁️"Okay Todoroki! First, let's get some Minnie and Mickey ears, that's a must when you visit Disneyland." You held him by the hand and dragged him to the nearest store.
☁️You picked some classic Minnie ears with the pink bow, while Todoroki got simple Mickey ears.
☁️"You look so cute Todoroki!" you said. "Should I take a picture?"
☁️Todoroki simply nodded and you smiled brightly, using your phone to take a picture of both of you.
☁️The picture turned out pretty cute and you showed to him.
☁️You felt your heart skip a beat with the gentle smile that spread across his lips.
☁️"H-hey, wanna get some popcorn?" You asked stumbling on your own words.
☁️"Popcorn?" He tilted his head to the side. "But we eat popcorn all the time back at the dorms...?"
☁️"Oh Todoroki, but this is DISNEYLAND, it's not your typical popcorn."
☁️You led Todoroki to the nearest popcorn machine, never letting go of his hand.
☁️His eyes widened at the sight of the popcorn menu. "Y/n, they have curry popcorn!" He said, his excitement reminding you of a little kid.
☁️"Yep!"
☁️Both of you picked your popcorn. He got the curry one, while you settled for the milk chocolate one.
☁️"What are those people waiting in line for?" He asked pointing at the line next to you.
☁️"Ah! That's the line for the Dumbo attraction."
☁️"Like, the elephant dumbo?" His eyes were practically shining.
☁️"Yes?"
☁️"I wanna ride it." He stated.
☁️"Are you sure? It's mostly for kids." Todoroki ignored you and this time, he held your hand a brought you to the line.
☁️"I watched it with my mom when I was younger."
☁️You smiled, looking up at Todoroki. He seemed to be having a good time.
☁️The ride was fun and more enjoyable than you thought.
☁️You spent the rest of the day walking around with Todoroki, eating, and going on rides.
☁️It was already dark when you looked at your watch.
☁️"It's gonna start soon..." You said smiling.
☁️"What?" He asked.
☁️You didn't need to answer, because soon, fireworks were flying in the air.
☁️Todoroki was amazed and couldn't look away from the illuminated sky.
☁️But you couldn't stop staring at him.
☁️"Hey... Y/n." Todoroki called, his eyes still glued to the scenery in front of him. "Thank you, for today." He said, tightening his grip around your hand.
☁️"You're welcome!" You said smiling.
☁️You were going to say something else, but it mustn't have been important since the feeling of Todoroki's lips on yours was enough to make you forget.
Shinsou Hitoshi
☁️You didn't know exactly how you found yourself at Disneyland with your friend and crush Shinsou.
☁️You were in the class with the rest of the 1-A, who knew about your crush on Shinsou.
☁️You told them how you never went to Disneyland before, and they just told you to meet them at the park for the weekend.
☁️But when you arrived, you were met with a mop of purple hair instead.
☁️It all made sense when Mina sent a message to the group chat wishing you good luck.
☁️"So, where do you want to begin?" Asked Shinsou, taking you from your thoughts.
☁️"I don't know actually, I've never been here before." You said.
☁️"Never? Well, let's grab something to eat first then." He said, taking your hand in his. "Let's be together okay? It's really easy to get lost here."
☁️"You had a bad experience with that or something?" He teased him
☁️"Yep, my mom left me alone for a while and I decided to run after Donald."
☁️"That sounds pretty traumatizing."
☁️"Yeah, for my mom, I was having the time of my life with Donald and Goofy."
☁️You both laughed as he led you to the Plaza restaurant.
☁️"Wow! There's so much to choose from, I don't even know what some of these things are." You said, scratching your head as you read through the menu.
☁️"Want me to choose for you?" He asked, and you nodded excitedly back.
☁️"Two teriyaki fried chicken sandwiches, please." He said. "And two mango boba drinks." The waiter smiled and wrote down everything.
☁️When the food arrived, you couldn't believe how beautiful it was.
☁️The sandwich was shaped like Mickey's gloves and even the tapioca pearls from the drinks were Mickey-shaped.
☁️You had to snap a picture of your lunch, and sneakingly capture Shinsou as well.
☁️You smiled down at the picture and started eating your delicious sandwich.
☁️Once both of you were done, it was time for the rides.
☁️You decided to ride in every existing rollercoaster, and by the time the sun was setting, you were getting dizzy.
☁️"We have time for one last attraction before going home."
☁️You pouted a little, sad that such a day was ending.
☁️"Don't pout, I'll bring you back whenever you want." He said, flicking your nose, before leading you to the last attraction of the day. "The Western River Railroad."
☁️You boarded the train with Shinsou and waited patiently for the ride to start.
☁️The ride was peaceful, unlike the others. And it was incredibly beautiful.
☁️You sighed as the trains passed along the river. The mix of orange, dark blue, and pink that painted the sky took your breath away.
☁️You felt Shinsou's hand sneaking into yours, and you looked at him, smiling and intertwining your fingers.
☁️"I like you, Shinsou." You said, staring into his purple eyes.
☁️"I know." He simply said, getting closer to you. "I like you too." He closed the space between you both.

God of Loss
Part Three: You and I Can Call It Home — Snippet Two
<<<—Prev
Summary: “You lied to me, you fucker,” Tommy accused, pointing a finger at the stone as he sat down and crossed his legs, sliding his backpack off into the slightly damp ground beside him.
—
Or: The AU of New Deceit’s an Old Design where Karl doesn’t show up right away, and Tommy mourns his brother’s death.
Warnings: Major Character Death, Heavy Angst, Grief/Mourning.
Note: This is an extended deleted scene from New Deceit’s an Old Design continuing after chapter four. You all asked for this.
“You lied to me, you fucker,” Tommy accused, pointing a finger at the stone as he sat down and crossed his legs, sliding his backpack off into the slightly damp ground beside him. He unzipped the top and pulled out the thermos, then a wrapped metal spoon. As he twisted the lid off, the smell of curry filled the chilly air, and Tommy inhaled a long breath of the familiar smell.
“Ah, that’s better,” he sighed, dipping the spoon into the hot food. “Tubbo was probably getting tired of me forcing him to make curry every other day.” His friend had let it happen though, every time, even if it was with an increasingly reluctant groan as he walked into the kitchen. “But that’s not the point. You told me you came up with this yourself, but no—” Tommy drawled out the last syllable, waving the spoon around in the air, “—an old lady on the bus gave this to you. You lying asshole.”
Tommy took a bite of curry, then leaned back until his head rested on the grass next to the stone. He set the thermos aside by his bag so that he wouldn’t accidentally knock it over.
“I went to the apartment yesterday,” he said, staring up at the grey clouds, the midday sun poking through the gaps in little threads of light. “I got all the stuff. Well, all the important stuff. Prime knows you would be happy to never see those fucking plastic chairs again.” He let out a short huff of a laugh.
“I got all the clothes, and the deck of cards, and the plates and your mug.” He paused to weave his fingers together on top of his stomach. “And I found the chocolate chips you hid under the sink, dickhead. I knew you hadn’t eaten them all.”
A bird chirped in the tree overhead, and Tommy caught a flash of orange as it took flight.
“I found some other things too,” Tommy added, eyes flicking to his left and right. “Things that I don’t think you wanted me to know about. I don’t—I don’t know why there was a gun under the bed. I don’t think I want to know. Or maybe I do. I’m sure you had a good reason, right? You must’ve.”
To protect me, Tommy thought and settled on that as answer enough.
It’s not safe for you to know.
He could live with those answers. Wilbur would have told him if he thought Tommy should know.
“I mean, you didn’t even like movies with a lot of shooting and shit, so I’m sure there was a reason for… that. I threw it in the river, by the way. I didn’t think you needed it anymore, and I sure as fuck don’t want it.
“There was something else too, from… before. A bunch of identification papers and shit. I know you don’t like to talk about that, and I don’t either, to be honest. But it might be a good idea, I think. I might start doing that when I come here, just saying little pieces that I remember.”
Tommy pulled himself into a sitting position as he rambled on about other things as he finished off the rest of the curry. He wanted to go back to school in a few days. Tubbo and Ranboo were going to take him ice skating when the rink opened up downtown. Ranboo got a new favourite Pokémon, and Tommy was going to make him a patch of it for his birthday in the spring.
“I miss you,” he sighed, when he had said all he could think of. “I love you. And I’ll be back soon, yeah?” Tommy put away the food and picked his backpack off the ground, starting back to the parking lot where Tubbo and Ranboo were waiting for him.
As he stepped off the grass into the paved driveway area, he caught a familiar figure leaning against an old oak tree. He squinted at them until he made out the purple of their hoodie and the familiar wave sent his way.
“Hi Karl.”

Meeting of the Minds
Valdyss has nearly completed her first phase of research into ley lines and places of magical power in Drustvar. I realized last night that, since a lot of that has been happening in one-on-one RP or 'off screen' completely, there's no way my Autumnhearth guildies and those who RP with us would know that. I'm posting this scene with my writing partner's permission to catch everyone up a little. As a bonus, y'all get to meet Faye's younger sister, Asta.
- - - - -
Valdyss may have met one of the Ladies of Frostfall, but the second remained apparently rather elusive.
Where Faye spent a good deal of time in her workshop, Asta was across the hall in the keep’s study. The other Lady Callahan slowly opened the door and took a step outside. Not out of caution, but because she was distracted. Another book sat open in her hand as she gradually walked out from the study. ‘Rumination on the Elements and Nature,’ read the title. Yet another way to feed her curiosity about the ways of nature based magic.
Asta frowned slightly as she went over one particular passage, moving down the hall with the sort of practiced, subconscious ease one might expect from a regular resident. She was headed towards the kitchen apparently, with the unconscious desire for food.
At least she was going to try and eat unlike someone else in the keep.
The portal behind Valdyss blinked from existence with a quiet whoosh, plunging the spacious guest room into darkness. A snap of the mage’s fingers conjured a tiny flame that hovered between them for a few seconds before it grew into a fiery ball the size of a marble and moved to levitate over her palm. The illumination it provided did little more than push back the shadows immediately in front of her, but it was enough light to allow her to get to the door without taking a header over anything that might be in her path.
Val opened the door with her free hand and, standing in a rectangle of light cast into the room from the hallway, she shook her other hand to extinguish the fire it held. She waved away a wisp of smoke as she stepped into the hallway… and very nearly right into a woman passing by the room. “Oh!” she yelped, unconsciously bringing a hand up to cover her galloping heart. “Light, I’m sorry. I didn’t see you coming.”
Asta subconsciously moved away from the sudden figure, but the yelp drew her eyes away from her text towards the mage. They were a much darker blue than Faye’s and currently filled with both alarm and confusion.
She shut the book in her hand sharply, giving Valdyss a once over. “That’s…fine. Who are you?” With the small number of servants they had, it wasn’t hard to recognize this was not one of their friends. And she couldn’t recognize her from the village either.
Nerd that she was, Val’s attention was almost immediately drawn to the book in the woman’s hand. That, combined with a beauty that was so familiar by now, made all the pieces click. “Asta?” she said, brow raised.
“Valdyss Duskbane, but Val’s fine.” The mage made a critical study of the other woman and, noting the alarm in her eyes, remained alert for sudden movements or any other signs of a fight. “I come in peace, I swear just don’t…” The fingers of her left hand wiggled in the general direction of the floor as she held her right one out in a defensive position. “Don’t root me, or whatever.”
Valdyss would have to look up to meet the woman's gaze, as Asta stood easily over 6' tall. The recognition was confusing up until Val introduced herself.
The alarm dropped from faintly familiar features. Asta's entire posture relaxed with a small huff. "You're Valdyss?" The younger Callahan asked, looking the mage over in a new light. She pursed her lips for a moment before humming with a shrug. "Mmm, I think I get it."
Nonetheless she offered a hand out towards Val. "I am Asta, yes. My apologies for the suspicion. I didn't recognize you, nor did I know you'd be visiting us today. Usually Faye warns me so I don't barge in and make a fool of her. Well, more than she already is anyhow."
Val grinned up at Asta as she took the younger Callahan’s hand in a firm grip. “I am indeed Valdyss.” She withdrew her hand and instead gripped the strap of her pack and pulled it a little higher on her shoulder. “And I am also at fault for you not being warned of my arrival. Faye’s not expecting me yet.”
A faint blush began to rise in the mage’s cheeks as she continued on. “I finished up earlier than expected in Dalaran and, um...” She paused, cleared her throat.
“Well, I was wandering around to kill time and came across a vendor selling a spiced liquor that I thought would add a nice kick to the Crackle n’ Apple.” Val’s hands moved as she spoke and her expression grew animated in her explanation. “And then I found this roasted pork tenderloin and thought that along with some brie would pair really well with the apple and-” Her words tapered off into a chuckle. Val shrugged. “And I didn’t want to wait any longer to see her, okay?”
An amused expression very similar to the one her sister often got grew across Asta's face. She just waved the fluster off with an easy gesture before turning.
"Then by all means: I was headed towards the kitchen anyways. I can help you make the drink and you'll get to kick in Faye's workshop door to make her eat this time. Stag knows you'll probably be a lot more appealing than me getting to lecture her again." Asta snorts, starting to walk off.
"Do you honestly think Faye takes issue with you interrupting her?" Val called to Asta's back as sped to catch up to the retreating woman. She fell into pace at her side and looked up at her. "Asta, your sister adores you."
Asta lets out a soft scoff. "Oh no, I don't really. Well. Most of the time." She corrects with a pause. "The one time she spilled Shroom Bloom on herself was a... very interesting incident." Despite that, there's a hint of fiendish delight that crosses Asta's expressions for a moment. But then it's gone, and she's looking to Valdyss.
"But I adore my sister as well. And if you do too, you'll know I essentially have to intrude or she'd be in there for hours without a drop of water."
“I do,” Val replied without missing a beat. She hefted the pack hanging off her shoulders to emphasize her point. “It’s exactly why I ran around half of Dalaran putting together a meal before finally caving to my haste to get here. "Brought plenty for three, by the way,” she added with a smile.
Asta shot Valdyss a look when that little addition was made. “Trying to curry favor with food?” she quipped with a faint smirk. “My my, you may be as smart as Faye claims.”
“Not looking to curry favor as much as to take advantage of an opportunity to get to know you better.” Val had to jog for a few steps to catch up to Asta’s side again. These tall Callahan women and their long strides. “If it isn’t already, I believe it will become important to your sister that we meet and spend some time together. Light, at least I hope my read on things is correct in that regard.”
Asta finally made it to the kitchen with Val: a large space with a stone oven, some door inlaid with runes, a healthy fireplace, and many more stonework "appliances." Magic hung thick in the room as Asta went to open another door and begin pulling out what must have been supplies to make the Crack N' Apple.
"If she's as fond of you as I suspect, and this continues as it does, I suspect the same." Asta commented. "But that extends both ways, you know. I'd like to understand just who my sister is seeing."
Blue eyes shifted aside to look at Valdyss pointedly, framed by the shorter blonde hair on her head. There was no maliciousness to the statement: no threat. But she was observing the woman.
Valdyss had no control over the grin that transformed her previously tense features, and wouldn’t have tried to compose herself even if it was possible. Of all the emotions she could wear outwardly like a badge of honor, those she felt growing for Faye were among the most important.
“Well, to use a cliche I suspect you’ll appreciate, I am an open book.” As she spoke, Val unpacked the food and then bustled around the kitchen, gathering what she’d need to warm the tenderloin and then plate it up along with the cheese. "I don’t have a thing to hide, so ask away.”
"Well first- Oh here." Asta moved aside and got a large metal pan. She walked over to the fireplace and slid the pan into a niche made partway up the stony alcove. Reaching below, with a murmur, Asta ignited the rune carved there and a hearty fire sprung to life.
"There you are: and the plates are right over there." Asta pointed to a cabinet in question before returning to making her drink. "First: why were you in Dalaran? I was told you are doing some studies there? Something about ley lines I believe."
Valdyss muttered a quiet thanks as she crossed to the cabinet Asta had gestured to. She grabbed three plates and brought them back to the counter closest to where Asta was working. “I’ve been trying to locate areas of concentrated arcane energy here in Drustvar. My hope is to use those as pinpoints that can then be connected together to accurately map the network of main ley lines in this region.”
The mage peeked into the stone recess to check on the roast, smiling as she inhaled the pleasant scent of rosemary. “This trip wasn’t to research as much as it was to log my findings so far.” She shook her head. “The Kirin Tor doesn’t have nearly as much data about Drustvar as I imagined they would, and I intend to remedy that.” Val sighed. “The dark history of your homeland and the potential for that history to repeat itself is just too important to go unnoted.”
Asta, meanwhile, was busying herself with mixing their drinks. She was listening of course, judging from the eventual hum that left her as Valdyss finished speaking.
"Interesting. And what have you found so far? I have a sneaking suspicion a lot of the arcane points of power would likely also be tied towards important places for natural magic."
Val nodded. “What I'm seeing here in Drustvar is consistent with the relationship between ley lines and places of power all over the world. Sites that hold a concentration of arcane magic are either over a main ley line- a trunk, if you will -or where two or more smaller branches intersect.” Talking with her hands as always, the mage crossed her index fingers to illustrate that last point.
“As for natural energy being tied to sites of power in the same way arcane is, that makes complete sense to me.” She leaned one hip against the counter and watched Asta work for a moment before adding, “I can give you copies of the final map and my findings once I have it all pulled together, if you’d like.”
Asta glanced over to the mage as she spoke, and there was clear interest in her expression. Even more so when the offer of a map came into the picture.
"I would absolutely love a copy, if that were possible." She agreed, putting the whipped creme into each of the three glasses. "My knowledge of ley lines is not quite as advanced, but they are rather intriguing. It feels as though the notion of arcane magic isn't quite as talked about around here, despite the Lord Admiral's daughter being a particularly potent mage herself. Or perhaps even more so because of that, actually."
“Ah. We mainlanders with our strange Light and magic, eh?” Val replied, adding a wink for Asta.
The mage looked in on the roast again and, seeing it would likely be perfectly browned in a few minutes, she turned to the counter and unwrapped the round of brie she'd brought. “I’d be interested in visiting a few of the mapped sites with you.” Val centered the cheese on a plate and held her open hand a couple of inches over it, palm down.
“My theory is that you may feel a stronger pull of nature magic there, just as I will with the arcane.” As she spoke, a flickering red glow illuminated the space between her palm and the plate. The brie began to bubble and melt.
“Not to say they’re the same magic. I mean, they’re channeled in different ways, as far as I know,” Val continued. “But I believe that- in the most elemental sense -nature and arcane magic come from the same energy, so I think we’d prove that there are more similarities in the way that our people actually conjure and wield magic than there are differences.”
Asta was in the middle of sprinkling the cinnamon across the drinks when Val made her second offer.
Her hands paused in their work, hovering there for a moment in thought. She continued shortly after, but seemed ever so slightly distracted. It might be subtle enough for Valdyss to miss initially.
"It would be something, certainly, depending on the days you'd choose. I have not gotten the chance to read much into the interplay between the Arcane and Natural magics: most of mine have to do with the latter. Aren't you the Steward of Autumnhearth as well, yes?"
Val nodded. “I am...well, I will be.” She lifted her hand away from the now perfectly gooey round of brie. “I'm currently the Court Secretary and, as honored as I am to have the role, I’m not sure I would have accepted it if I had the impression that all of my time would have to be dedicated to that alone.”
As she spoke, the mage moved to the oven to remove the tenderloin. Once she’d set that down to cool, Valdyss swiped a hand across the rune carved low on the fireplace, cutting off the flame. “As it is, I’ll have the flexibility to choose days that are convenient for you.” She leveled a gaze at Asta, softened by a warm and genuine smile. “We both know your sister won’t need any convincing to cut you loose from here for a little while.”
And here, Asta stopped. She stared down at the three prepared drinks with an intensity they didn't deserve. It was a few seconds before she turned her attention towards Valdyss and smiled politely.
"Well," She finally said, picking up the drinks, "I suppose I'll just have to speak with her on the matter." And that was that. "Now, what can you tell me about your work in Autumnhearth? It seems to be quite the up and coming barony in Drustvar, which is good given everything that's happened."
Valdyss was tempted to push because she knew how much Faye adored Asta and desired more for her and- unexpectedly -because she already liked the younger Callahan enough herself to want to help. It wasn’t the mage’s place though, and Asta’s curt response and quick change of subject only drove that fact further home. ‘What do you know about family matters anyway?’ the mage silently mused to herself.
Taking the hint, Val found a cutting board and set to work slicing the meat as she spoke. “It’s my duty to represent and speak for Autumnhearth, in person or by correspondence, when the Hallewells aren’t available or have had to recuse themselves.” She shrugged. “I haven’t had to do much of anything yet, but I’m ready and honored to… and a bit nervous to, if I’m being honest.”
Valdyss grew quiet then, clearly lost in her own thoughts. The silence between her and Asta didn’t feel uncomfortable, not to her anyway, and she briefly wondered if it was the same for the other woman. She slid the precisely sliced tenderloin onto a plate and tilted it so there was a little space between each slice, allowing one to see beyond the golden seared surface to the pale meat in the center. Grabbing up the pan, she poured the juices- dotted with rosemary, pepper, and garlic -over the roast.
“Promise I’ll help clean up later,” Val said, eyes on the plates of meat and cheese as she picked them up. “But, for now, I think we’re ready to eat.”
tagging @merelliahallewell and @alexandriawilliams for brief mention of the Hallewells

April 12, 2021: Mrs. Doubtfire (1992) (Recap)
Hey, Robin Williams. Been a while.
I’m sorry that I haven’t watched your movies for a while, and that I always skip your comedy stand-up when my phone’s on shuffle. I just...let me explain. Since I was a kid, you were one of my favorite entertainers. That might as well have started the day I was born, because...well, we share a birthday, fun fact. But it definitely continued with the first movie I ever saw in theatres.
While I don’t quite remember the first time I saw it, Aladdin was one of my favorite childhood movies, and I knew that you were the voice of the Genie from an early age. You might have actually been the first actor I ever knew by name. Which makes sense, because your stardom during the ‘90s was nearly unparalleled.
The next film I remember seeing (and hearing) you in was Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. That also starred Tim Curry, who would also be a major figure of my childhood. It also wasn’t the best movie, in hindsight, but it is the only time I’ve heard you rap since.
But eventually, I watched your forays into live-action, too. Jumanji, Hook, even the objectively bad Flubber, are all movies that I vividly remember watching during childhood. I was really excited for Flubber, even, and I LOVED Jumanji growing up. I liked Hook, too, but I appreciated that more as I got older.
Of course, during this time period, you also made less family-friendly films. The Fisher King, Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, Good Morning Vietnam, and What Dreams May Come were all very successful, and cemented your reputation as an actor. I also haven’t seen any of them. In fact...I don’t think I’ve seen any of your dramatic roles, and that’s something that I’ll fix this year. Hell, in a few days, I’ll watch The Birdcage, another of your big hits of the ‘90s.
But why haven’t I seen them up to now? Well...I was going to watch these films, about seven years ago. But...I haven’t been able to bring myself to do it. Because it hurts. A lot.
I know that this is a downer, but my relationship with Robin Williams today is tainted by his tragic death. I was fucking BROKEN when his death was announced, and I really haven’t been able to watch him since. I’ve seen Aladdin recently, but that’s about all I could stand to watch. I mean, the guy shares a birthday with me! I’ve always loved his comedy stylings, and his improvisational skills are something I’ve internalized to a certain degree.
So, yeah. This one’s tough. But, it’s about time I moved on, and celebrated the man’s career for what it was: stellar. And that also brings up an important question, that some of you have probably asked by now:
HOW HAVE I MISSED MRS. DOUBTFIRE, WHAT THE FUCK
I KNOW I KNOW OK?
Look, I’m not entirely sure how I haven’t seen this movie, because I’m MORE than aware of it! I remember it airing during the ‘90s, my Dad AND girlfriend love this movie, and I know FOR A FACT that my family owned both the DVD AND THE VHS of this movie! So, how? HOW HAVE I NOT SEEN IT BY NOW?
I honestly have no idea, but let’s fix it now, huh? Yet one more man-dresses-as-woman movie this month! And no, I am not watching White Chicks...because I’ve already seen White Chicks. Also, it’s...problematic.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap
Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) is a voice-actor, and a good one. Which, given that it’s Robin Williams, isn’t entirely inaccurate. He’s also a voice actor with a spine, as he morally objects to a scene in the cartoon that he’s performing for, in which the main character smokes. By the way, I’m 99% sure that this cartoon is animated by Chuck Jones, and it looks well-made.
Anyway, this leads to him quitting the cartoon altogether, and allows him to pick up his kids early from school. These kids are Lydia (Lisa Hykub), Chris (Matthew Lawrence), and Natalie (Mara Wilson), and it’s Chris’ 12th birthday. Daniel arranges a...surprisingly large party, given that it’s completely impromptu, and it comes with a petting zoo and complete trappings. However, it’s not a party of which his wife will approve.
This wife is Miranda (Sally Field), a successful architect and the breadwinner of the family. After getting a call from the neighbor about the party, she comes home and busts the outrageous party. And for the record, I’m entirely on Miranda’s side here. This party is INSANE, and very irresponsible, given the fact that Daniel currently has no job. And yeah, he’s a very loving father, and a good person, but...it’s too much.
Miranda feels the same, and after 14 years of frustration, she realizes that she no longer loves Daniel. In a genuinely sad scene, she tells him that she wants a divorce. And she goes through with it MUCH to Daniel’s detriment. He has no home, as he’s staying with his brother, Frank (Harvey Fierstein) and his partner Jack (Scott Capurro). He also still has no job, meaning that he has no way to provide for his children. This means that he has no ability to provide, and the judge awards Miranda full custody. Oof.
However, this is a conditional arrangement, as another hearing for joint custody will be held in 3 months, and if Daniel can get a home and job in that time, he has a chance. He performs a litany of voices and impressions with his court liason, Mrs. Sellner (Anne Haney), which amuses me, but not her, and he gets a job in order to be with his kids for more than one day a week.
Meanwhile, Miranda IMMEDIATELY starts dating fellow designer and old flame Stuart Dunmeyer (Pierce Brosnan), like, almost before Daniel leaves the house. He bids a heartfelt goodbye to his kids, with the promise that he’ll see them on Saturdays. And now begins the absolute hatred and petty bitchiness of Daniel and Miranda! Seriously, it’s...it’s fucking terrible, and it takes away from my sympathy from either side. I get that divorce is rough and ugly, but GODDAMN, neither of them perform the act with any form of tact or grace.
This is put on display during the kids’ visitation to Daniel’s semi-crappy new apartment, which doesn’t even seem that bad, to be honest. Miranda dropped them off late and picked them up early, as if to slowly starve Daniel of time with his kids, which is extraordinarily shitty of her, fuck me. Daniel’s not taking it well, understandably, but then does something...really dumb, when you think about it.
See, Miranda’s looking for a nanny, to help watch the kids and clean the house during the week. Daniel volunteers his services, which is actually a good idea, but Miranda says she’ll think about it, which we ALL know means no. I DO NOT like Miranda, even if I understand the initial reasons for the divorce. She’s being especially spiteful, and it’s not a good look.
Daniel’s stupid idea, though, is to change the phone number on the ad for the nanny, which Miranda shows him before she takes the kids. Instead, he calls her number, and pretends to be various terrible applicants, until finally supplying his own applicant: the completely fictional Euphegenia Doubtfire (Daniel Hillard).
Daniel plays Mrs. Doubtfire as an elderly British woman, and a seasoned nanny in her day. Which is why it’s weird to me that, when he does to Frank and Jack to help him make an elaborate disguise as Mrs. Doubtfire, that they go through various other impressions and get-ups. Which, yes, is goddamn hilarious, but also makes NO SENSE, given that they’ve already established her character to Miranda. Funny, but nonsensical.
But, regardless, Euphegenis Doubtfire comes into being, and introduces herself to Miranda and the kids. Mrs. Doubtfire is exactly what Miranda’s looking for, although the kids aren’t exactly overjoyed, ESPECIALLY the oldest, Lydia. Also, during this first meeting, Miranda openly bad-mouths Daniel in front of the kids, in just the WORST fuckin’ way. I genuinely dislike Miranda A LOT. Again, the divorce was certainly justified, but I REALLY don’t like her. Daniel loves his kids, and they’re HIS kids, TOO. Stop using them as weapons against him, OOOOOOOOOOOH I DON’T LIKE MIRANDA
Anyway, that evening, after she’s officially been hired by Miranda, Mrs. Doubtfire heads home, only to find court liason Mrs. Sellner waiting to speak with Daniel. After a litany of puns, and a humorous changing scene, Daniel accidentally throws the Mrs. Doubtfire mask out of the window, and is forced to improvise through equally humorous circumstances. Hence, the above meringue mask scene. Has anybody tried that, by the way? Could that work as a groundbreaking beauty technique? Or would the sugar just feed the skin bacteria and give you acne? Genuinely curious.
Now going between his job as Daniel and the nanny job as Doubtfire, Daniel’s not doing too badly for himself. The nanny job begins, and Mrs. Doubtfire IMMEDIATELY contrasts with Daniel, creating a disciplinarian atmosphere in place of Daniel’s formerly loosey-goosey attitude. Which is interesting, and it works! I mean, it’s not how I would parent, but it does work. Doubtfire makes the kids to their homework, rather than watch TV, and then attempts to make dinner. Instead, though, the dinner’s ruined, and Daniel orders takeout and makes it LOOK like homemade food. And it looks good, too! Daniel’s full of hidden talents.
After dinner, as Mrs. Doubtfire’s leaving, Lydia apologizes for backtalking her earlier, and thanks her for making her mom happy with everything she did that evening. he also says that she’s still a bit messed up about her dad being gone. And yeah, it’s sweet-but-sad.
Going forward (and in a montage set to Aerosmith’s Dude Looks Like a Lady), Mrs. Doubtfire takes care of the family, and Daniel even betters himself to become a better Mrs. Doubtfire. Which...to be honest, Daniel REALLY should’ve done this before. I get that he needed the pressure of losing the kids to do this, but...look, Daniel really wasn’t that responsible of a parent, and the fact that THIS is how he learns to be so is...not great. Like, here’s an example, OK: take Donald Trump.
Yeah, I know, what’s this politics doing in my peanut butter? And WOW, that reference is older than me, but anyway. Let’s say that, in two years, a new politician comes on the scene, and her name is Karyn Walldottir. She has somewhat centrist views, and behaves in a way that’s inclusive to the majority, and backs up her claims and promises with evidence (at least true enough for us to suspend our disbelief). This is, of course, Donald Trump disguised as a woman in order to gain custody of the United States of America again. Naturally.
Karyn Walldottir gets elected in 2024, and all of her policies are markedly different from Trump’s and Biden’s, but leaning closer to Biden in progressive standpoints (assuming that that worked for him come 2024). While Trump is doing this specifically to be president again, he ends up revising his personal policies, and being a better person and president for the country. A literal impossibility, I know. But suspend your disbelief to ask this question:
WHY THE FUCK WOULDN’T HE DO THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE? IT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE!
OK, now that that dumbass (and mildly horrifying) thought process is concluded, let’s get back to Mrs. Doubtfire. In the process of Mrs. Doubtfire’s ingratiation with the family, Miranda’s been dating Stu, whom Mrs. Doubtfire subtly insults when they meet. And yeah, Daniel’s being a little petty here, but it makes a bit of sense at least.
That night, after an accidental intrusion by Chris when Mrs. Doubtfire is going to the bathroom, Daniel’s basically forced to tell Chris and Lydia his little secret, which Lydia’s happy about, but Chris is understandably weirded out about. But, they agree to keep the secret from their mom and younger sister.
At his OTHER job, delivering film reels from a TV station, he witnesses the filming of an extremely boring kids educational TV show, and comments as such to another man watching. As he quickly learns, this is the owner of the station, Jonathan Lundy (Robert Prosky), on whom Daniel makes a good impression.
In the meantime, Mrs. Doubtfire has a talk with Miranda about their love lives, real and fictional. Daniel realizes how badly Miranda had been suffering in their marriage, which she never told him because...well, he never seemed to take anything seriously. Which is entirely fair...but this is why Miranda’s a tricky-ass character. She’s got two sides: there’s the justified caring mother and strong woman, and there’s the PETTY ASSHOLE who genuinely doesn’t care about Daniel or his feelings AT ALL. Jesus.
And Stu...look, Stu is LITERALLY a Gary Stu, who’s mostly perfect. Sure, he’s not always been that way, but he definitely is now! He’s responsible, wealthy, in love with Miranda AND her kids. And yeah, at a country club that he’s a member of (OF COURSE he is), he privately badmouth Daniel in front of Mrs. Doubtfire, calling him a loser, and...yeah, he’s not really unjustified in that statement. Fact of the matter is, Stu is barely even a plot device.
Meanwhile, in Daniel’s day job, he finds himself alone in the studio, where the toy dinosaurs from the TV show are still sitting on the table. He plays with them, gives them voices, sings some songs, and impresses Mr. Lundy, who’s there in the shadows after all that. He’s impressed, and invites Daniel to dinner to talk about a potential future show at the network.
But then, it’s also Miranda’s birthday coming up, and Stu’s holding a dinner for her, to which Mrs. Doubtfire is invited. Trouble is, it’s at the OH FUCK IT. YOU know what this is. It’s at the same time and place as the Mr. Lund meeting yaddayaddayadda LOOK. We ALL know how this is going to end. It’s the GODDAMN LIAR REVEALED TROPE AGAIN. And here’s the thing:
I FUGGIN’ HAAAAAATE THE LIAR REVEALED TROPE
You know, that thing in movies (especially family movies of the ‘90s) where somebody starts off a situation with a lie, they get deeper and deeper into that lie, grow close to people under false pretenses, and then OH NO! THE LIAR IS REVEALED! And everybody’s angry and/or sad, the liar slumps off, defeated and broken, but then realizes the error of his ways, while everybody else realizes the same thing, and he comes back to vindicate himself, and is welcomed back with open arms. And it introduces unneeded tension AND I HAVE ALWAYS FUCKING HATED IT.
Let’s list the examples, shall we? A Bug’s Life, Aladdin, Mulan, The Road to El Dorado, Chicken Run, How to Train Your Dragon, Klaus, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Megamind (SUBVERSIVE MY ASS), Over the Hedge, Rango, Toy Story, Steven Universe (the whole Pearl/Sardonyx arc, which went on for WAY too long), the list goes on and fucking on. And I GODDAMN HATE IT. Not to say it can’t be done well. Disney actually usually does a pretty good job with it, and Dreamworks uses it A LOT, but almost always pretty well. But sometimes...GOD. Either way, it’s still used FAR too fucking much. And look. Here’s another one. Joy.
Look, at this point...I will freely admit that I'm biased against this trope, but it’s also obvious where this is headed. Basically, Daniel switches back and forth between the dinner with the family, and the dinner with Mr. Lundy. With Mr. Lundy, he gets absolutely SMASHED. Great. Great decision, Daniel.
So, yeah, Mrs. Doubtfire’s also smashed, which is pretty goddamn apparent to them all. At this point, I’m wondering why Daniel, as Mrs. Doubtfire, didn’t just say she was sick as hell, and had to go home. Or, considering the fact that Daniel proposes her as a show idea regardless, the switch wasn’t even necessary! And that means that none of what’s about to happen, happens. Or, here’s a crazy thought, maybe Daniel shouldn’t have POISONED STU’S FOOD WITH CAYENNE PEPPER THAT HE’S ALLERGIC TO!
YEAH! Because that causes Stu to go into anaphylactic shock for a hot sec, causing him to choke. Mrs. Doubtfire does the right thing and gives him the Heimlich maneuver, and in the process, SURPRISE! IT’S BEEN DANIEL ALL ALONG! BUH BUH BUHHHHH DA DA DA DAAAAA DA
Yeah, so Miranda is understandably ENRAGED by this revelation, and it’s all over. Daniel represents himself in court at the custody hearing, but the judge deems his “lifestyle” dangerous for children. Which...yikes, Judge, that statement didn’t age well AT FUCKING ALL. But, given Daniel’s admitted stupidity with this whole idea, he’s not wrong about the dangerous part. But, I have to say, Daniel’s speech in his own defense is nice...although he also says he’s addicted to his children, so let’s throw a second yikes on there for good measure.
The speech moves Miranda...but not enough to prevent Daniel has his custody stripped away from him! GOD THEY BOTH SUUUUUUUUCK. Daniel’s a broken man, and Miranda and the kids are similarly broken without him and Mrs. Doubtfire. However...Daniel’s career isn’t broken AT ALL, as Mrs. Doubtfire is now a kid’s show host! Yeah! And she’s a hit! And again, it brings me to wonder why Daniel DIDN’T APPLY HIS OBVIOUS TALENTS LIKE THIS IN THE FIRST GODDAMN PLACE
Realizing that she made a mistake, she goes to the set during the filming of a show. She congratulates him on the show, and he replies by stating how broken he is now! Thanks, Miranda! Well, after an argument, and after Miranda sees how badly she’s messed up someone she used to care for, they come to an agreement: joint custody. FINALLY GODDAMN IT
And good, because I don’t want them back together. I have to give this film props for that: they acknowledge that these two are NOT good for each other, and they deliver a message in the end: families are families, no matter how they’re shaped. One mom, one dad, uncle or aunt, grandparents, adoption, two separated or divorced parents...oh, also, two dads or two moms. Yeah, that isn’t said in Mrs. Doubtfire’s final monologue, which is odd considering Daniel’s brother and his life partner...but it’s also kid’s TV in the ‘90s, so I guess that sadly makes sense. And with that, and their new family arrangement, Daniel takes his kids on an afternoon out, as himself.
...Look. That’s Mrs. Doubtfire, yaddayaddayadda LOOK. I don’t dislike this movie. In fact, here: have this mini-Review:
Cast and Acting - 9/10: Good, although Brosnan was a little stiff.
Plot and Writing - 5/10: It’s an idiot plot, what can I say? It’s actually based off of a book, which was a surprise to me, but it was adapted by Randi Mayem Singer and Leslie Dixon, and...eh. Still an idiot plot.
Directing and Cinematography - 8/10: It’s Chris Columbus, you get what you get. Definitely has that Home Alone flair to it.
Production and Art Design - 8/10: I mean, yeah, the Doubtfire disguise was good most of the time, but...I dunno, I could still tell it was Robin. But, still, it was good. Took 4 hours of makeup, fun fact.
Music and Editing - 8/10: Music by Howard Shore (ooh, Howard Shore!) was pretty nice, especially the ending theme. Editing by Raja Gosnell was...RAJA GOSNELL???
OH GOD. Yeah, OK, I see what happened here. Also, I didn’t know he was an editor! I just know him as the director of the Scooby-Doo films, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, The Smurfs films, Big Momma’s...
...OK, no, I am not doing Big Momma’s House OR the Madea movies. THE TROPE-BUCK STOPS HERE! I am moving on to something else! But, of course, I have to sum this up in a Review. See you there!

OTP Ask Meme (Impatient Edition) NicoMaki
Yeah, I know the point of these things is to wait for followers to Ask questions from the list, but reading though this one got me thinking too much. And, as the title implies, I got impatient and wanted to answer them all. Right away.
Anyway, credit to @lonelypond for this version coming across my dash. Reblog that version if you want to do this thing correctly.
Also, just because I’ve already answered these here, I’ve expanded on some for various reasons and left others short if I believe the reasons are obvious. So if you still want to do the whole interactive thing, you can still ask for clarification or whatever.
And finally, there will be spoilers ahead for How to Handle a Nico, both scenes I’ve written and posted, as well as some that remain in my Notes and WIP Warehouse. I’ll try to remember to link to the chapters mentioned.
1. Who wakes up first?
Nico, so she can make breakfast for her Maki.
2. Who wants to stay in bed just a little longer?
Maki. Usually because she studies or works later and/or longer hours. She is also not above pulling Nico back into bed when she comes to wake her.
3. Who takes longer getting ready?
Usually Nico.
4. When they can’t sleep, what do they do?
Maki’s libido can pretty much always be counted on to at least exhaust Nico, if not both of them.
5. Who falls asleep while watching a movie?
Depends on who had a rough day or week at work/school, though Maki may get bored and either watch Nico or fall asleep during overly sappy romance movies.
6. Who falls asleep last, watching the other with a small affectionate smile?
Either, depending on the stresses of the prior day.
7. Who comes up with the cheesy pick-up lines?
Nico intentionally. Maki unintentionally.
8. Who gets extremely competitive playing Mario Kart?
They both are, though in different ways. This is depicted in Consolation Prize.
9. Who accidentally pushes a door instead of pulling?
Maki, especially if she is in an unfamiliar place.
10. Who sets the other’s ringtone to something loud and obnoxious behind their back?
Both, though Maki only in retaliation for whatever teasing Nico may have done.
11. Who rearranges the bookshelf/DVD shelf in alphabetical order?
Nico likes a proper presentation of her idol merch. Maki is too busy with other stuff to care about special organization.
12. Who does the hands-over-the-eyes “Guess Who” thing?
Nico.
13. Who points out a dog when they see one?
Either.
14. Who’s prone to road rage?
Maki, especially when she is trying to get to the hospital when called in at some odd hour, or trying to get home after a stressful day.
15. Who’s prone to wearing socks indoor (or to sleep)?
Nico gets cold easier. Warm socks help.
16. Who reminds the other to put on sunscreen before going to the beach (or pool)?
Nico, partly out of habit from doing it with her siblings and partly as an excuse to offer to help Maki put it on. Depicted in Sunscreen.
17. Who carries all the important documents while traveling?
Nico.
18. Who gets the window seat?
Nico. Maki traveled enough with her parents and is happy to let her girlfriend see the sights instead.
19. Who puts their cold hands/feet on the other?
Nico intentionally. Maki unintentionally, usually.
20. What do they argue about the most?
I don’t believe anyone has been brave enough to track the data for this.
21. Who’s clumsier?
Maki, especially in the kitchen. Nico has her moments though.
22. Who texts more often?
Nico. With heavy emoji use. (I need to depict this more in HtHaN somehow)
23. Who is better with kids?
Nico. She was the primary caregiver for her siblings for many years after all.
24. Who’s the better cook?
Nico. See above.
25. Who mistakes salt for sugar?
Maki. Even after Nico labeled the containers.
26. Who puts the fork in the microwave?
Maki.
27. Who cooks at 2 in the morning?
Nico. Maki isn’t allowed to cook without Nico’s supervision. However, this would be a rare occasion as Nico typically will prepare something ahead of when Maki is arriving home this late and leave it for her to reheat.
28. Who lets the microwave play the loud beeping sound at 1 a.m.?
Maki, when she’s reheating whatever Nico made for her after arriving home late.
29. Who licks the spoon when they’re baking brownies?
Both.
30. Who likes doing the dishes?
Nico, though it would be more appropriate to say she doesn’t dislike it.
31. Who has bigger cravings? What are they?
Nico loves her sweets. Maki loves her Nico.
32. Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant?
Nico is highly attentive to Maki’s preferences in food. Knowing what Maki likes in restaurants lets her know what she can make at home. And food is definitely one of the best ways to Maki’s heart.
33. How do they eat ice cream? What’s their favorite flavors?
Nico likes sundaes with lots of sugary toppings. She also likes trying new flavors and will often get multiple scoops of different flavors. Maki is fine with a single scoop cone.
34. Do they go on dates? What are they like?
As often as their schedules allow. Maki likes quite dates like walks in a park or museum or sitting up on a hillside for stargazing. Nico likes shopping for outfits and idol merch, going to movies and bustling amusement parks. But both love watching the other enjoy their hobbies so they’re willing to go along with the other’s interests as well.
35. What do they smell when they smell Amortentia?
Nico smells her father’s aftershave, strawberries, and stewing tomatoes. Maki smells Nico’s special tomato curry, Nico’s shampoo, and the cinnamon sugar of the snickerdoodle cookies the Nishikino baker made for her to leave out for Santa.
Yes, two of Maki’s are directly related to Nico. What can I say? She’s addicted.
36. Which one is the secret snuggler?
Maki. The more tired or drunk she is, the clingier she gets.
37. Which one offers their jacket to the other when they complain they feel cold?
Maki. Nico gets cold easier, so Maki is usually the one to offer her jacket.
38. Who reaches for the other one’s hand while driving?
Yes.
39. Who leaves little notes in the other one’s lunch?
Nico, because she is the only one who makes lunch for them both; Maki isn’t the type to do such a thing even if she were allowed to cook more. (Bonus: What does it say?) Usually the messages are simple affirmations of love, but she is not above getting snarky if the two had an argument recently.
40. Who is the most affectionate?
Nico in public. Maki in private.
41. Who is the big spoon/little spoon?
Usually, Maki is the big spoon as she is quite fond of hugging her Nico like a teddy bear, though Nico will sometimes jetpack.
42. What is their favorite feature of their partner?
Maki loves Nico’s smile, particularly her genuine, unforced, non-idol persona smile. Nico loves Maki’s voice, specifically her singing voice.
43. What is the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?
Nico starts teasing Maki more, no longer to “put the spoiled rich girl in her place” but rather to see more of the adorable reactions. Maki actively tries to deny her feelings, even to, or perhaps especially to herself, falling back on established habits of insisting that she doesn’t have time to date, all the while quietly continuing to seek more time with Nico.
44. What are their nicknames for each other?
Both exclusively use -chan with the other.
45. Who worries the most? Over what?
Early on, both are worried about losing the other for different reasons. Nico is afraid that should a scandal occur that ruins her idol career, Maki may blame herself and leave. Maki fears that a busy schedule of studying in medical school followed by long hours at the hospital may turn away someone like Nico, whose attention seeking seems infinite. Later, as they settle into their relationship, their concerns turn to more stereotypical adult fears; traffic or transit accidents, sever illnesses, etc.
46. Who initiates kisses?
Nico in public. Maki in private.
47. Who says I love you first? How did it happen?
Nico, by accident, as depicted in Spoken.
48. Who tells their friends/family about their relationship first?
Technically Maki in both cases, though with their friends, Nico was active in the chatroom, and with their mothers, Maki only beat Nico by maybe half an hour or so. These instances are depicted in Reconstructed Reunion and Telling Mama.
49. What do they do when they’re away from each other?
Both have busy schedules, even as early as the years immediately following high school, so spending time away from each other is quite commonplace. This still did not stop Maki from going through a bout of depression during Nico’s first tour as a professional idol, as depicted in Homesick and Homecoming. From then on, Maki starts a tradition of visiting Nico during longer tours so as to break up their time away a bit.
50. Who gets overwhelmed by small acts of kindness?
Nico, as the more romantic of the two. This isn’t to say Maki doesn’t value sentiment, she just has other ways of expressing it than being overwhelmed.

The moment I grew suspicious of Aerith was when I replayed the OG and she didn’t offer the flower to me. You, Cloud, have to ask for it and Aerith really doesn’t interact with him much other than to sell him the flower. And that’s when I started paying real close to Aerith and her actions in both the OG and the Remake. I don’t think it’s alternate timelines. I think it’s a groundhogs day situation where Aerith got a message from the Planet when she was praying in front of that broken radiator. Do I think it’s the same Aerith from the OG with the same memories or experiences? No. From what I am grasping from her actions in the Remake, is that she is surprised that her vision is happening.
Like imagine you are doing your daily routine and then you get this recollection of events that are about to unfold. You get up and think it’s silly until the same thing that was said to happen happens. She is confused. She goes to the street where she was shown to meet this guy with her ex-boyfriend’s sword and when she gets there, he isn’t there(because Sephiroth delayed Cloud with his own shenanigans). She lets out a sigh of relief and excuses her vision as just a silly day dream and then when she tries to leave, she is stopped by the Arbiters of Fate. And then she suddenly sees Cloud, the boy in her vision, and I noticed that it was Aerith that took an immediate interest compared to her OG counterpart where she is passive. Aerith doesn’t know Cloud exactly. She “knows” Cloud from this vision of FFVII classic. So she is excited to meet him versus Cloud who is agitated and on edge because he keeps getting visions of Sephiroth antagonizing him. Aerith simply does what any girl would in her position get to know this stranger from her dream. And also, this also shows she doesn’t know everything. She just knows what she experienced. She probably doesn’t know she is going to die as Sephiroth killed her from behind. The reason I say this is that Aerith was wrong about people not being after Cloud. Why she wouldn’t know that is because in the OG, Aerith didn’t know Cloud was on the run at that time. They just met, possibly made some business, and they both left. Cloud didn’t start getting chased until after he walked pass the city square with the fountain. Of course, the Whispers come out again and shoo Aerith away and this had a wrinkle effect of the whole storyline in that Barret didn’t take Cloud on the mission because he thought he was too unreliable due to him seeing ghosts(all of the Avalanche members heard that).
Every scene with Aerith is like this. She does something she wasn’t supposed to do or says the wrong thing and gets a different result. She reveals that she knows Cloud is a mercenary and lied about it when she was supposed to ask who he was and Cloud was supposed to tell her. And she was supposed to yank Cloud away from Rude but instead she allowed Cloud to fight him which caused a bit of animosity between Cloud and the Turks.
It’s accidental until Chp. 9 and 10 where she seems to be pushing both Cloud and Tifa to get to Sector 7 faster. Like in the OG Wall Market, she is playing around with Cloud. She is having a good time and they try to figure out how they are going to get into Corneo’s place. I knew something was off in the Remake is that Aerith was serious business about rescuing Tifa before she even got to actually see her. Wall Market changed because Aerith was rushing to get to the plate. So instead of dicking around, she finds a more direct way to curry favor to get in.
Aerith was testing just what the Arbiters would allow her to get away with. And she indirectly saved a lot of people in Sector 7 because of it. Now I know you don’t believe that some meta shit isn’t going down with Aerith because it may lead to a different result, but I am not sure if any of this changes anything but expand on the story. Zack is going to stay did but have more relevance to the story. Aerith is going to die because she literally cannot not try to save the world. It is in her blood. And Sephiroth is going to succeed in summoning Meteor. I think the difference is whether Sephiroth will allow her to summon Holy. But yeah. If anything, the Remake put emphasis on Aerith being a Cetra and why that is important because this is only possible because she is a Cetra.
Interesting take on how the devs could justify the changes. It's possible that's what's happening since Aerith is the cause of the whispers stepping in all the time, and their influence is still present since the walk through midgar book says they can't be killed, they just disappear when their job is done, so that means they're still gonna be around in the rest of Remake. Whether we see them is another thing, but I'd be amused af with all these people making whispers are gone theories freaking out when the whispers appear again 🤣🤣🤣
