The Winter Solstice celebration in the Hewn City was one of my fav moments from the book... mostly because Nesta got to leverage her Very Particular Set of Skills that she had been made to hone since she was a child.

I wish I had seen more of that (and courtly intrigue in general), so I took some wild detours from canon. I thought it would be lovely if Lucien taught Nesta Autumn Court dances while Mor taught her Night Court dances while Cassian taught her traditional Illyrian dances for reasons. (I also swapped waltzing for Latin-style dances for the Autumn Court, but kept it ballroom for the toffs. The Night Court can keep their waltzes.) Bonus for Cassian dancing because I can't stop, won't stop.

As if there was no after...

Yes Cassian said "everyone hates you" but the next day he said

“I didn’t mean what I said last night—about everyone hating you.” She halted, her blue-gray eyes frosting. “It’s true.”

“It’s not.” He dared one step closer. “You’re here because we don’t hate you.” He cleared his throat, running a hand through his hair. “I wanted you to know that. That we don’t—that I don’t hate you.”

Shackled. But then this happens.

“No. I was angry—it’s not true.”

“You are my mate, Cassian,” she said against his lips, and kissed him softly. “And you’re mine,” he said, kissing her in turn.

She smiled, and damn if it wasn’t the loveliest thing he’d ever seen. “You.” “You’ve had me from the moment you met me.”

Nesta even admitted that she faked everything with Eris, the man that wasn't even able to be this interesting to distract her from the music.

Eris being interested in Nesta just for her power is red flag.

Nesta was more focused on the music than Eris. That's a fact.

Had he [Cassian] really believed what he’d seen on this dance floor?

Antis always the first to say "read between the lines" and they're blinded when it comes to Nessian.

Cassian smiled at her, and the world faded away. The music was no longer the most beautiful thing in existence. He was.

Antis "forgetting" those scenes, Nesta's own words, Nesta's own reaction -even if they claim her to be their favourite- and Nesta's feelings, just because they don't like Cassian.

It's poor.

It also means that being unable to take pieces without manipulating or decontextualizing them.

So in one bonus chapter Azriel of all people is subtlety hinting that Nesta and Cassian should have a baby and in the other … Cassian is … once again taking Rhys’ side against Nesta, mad at Nesta and letting her be threatened by Rhys, and showing 0 affection whatsoever.

Oh yeah, that’s for sure a couple that should be having a baby.

Also the irony of Cassian being mad at Nesta for a compassionate action when he used to be mad at her for not caring enough … WHICH IS IT MAN?!

Girl Dad Cassian Headcanons

Cassian is the classic dad in which the response to, "Your daughter got in a fight today," is, "Did she win?" Nesta pretends to be annoyed, but is secretly proud to learn that their daughter did in fact win the fight. Cassian calls her on it.

Elain comments on how beautiful and intricate her young niece's braided hairstyle is and tells Nesta she had no idea she could braid hair like that. Nesta tries not to laugh and tells her she didn't do it. Elain's and Feyre's eyes both drift to Cassian and realization sinks in. They're more than a little impressed.

Naturally, one of the few things Cassian's daughters won't have a say in is learning how to defend themselves. He and Nesta both believe it's a necessity, but he makes it fun and lets his daughters "win" a lot to build their confidence. As important as that is, though, he takes his girls' tea parties every bit as seriously as their self-defense training. The tiara he wears at them might as well be his at this point.

Nesta teaches her girls to dance, but always tries to make it fun for the girls instead of a tool for them to wield later in life. Cassian is the ideal dance partner, though that mostly consists of him picking them up and spinning them around until they're cackling and borderline puking. He also learns the females' dance steps and demonstrates them complete with leaps to get the girls laughing so hard they're crying.

The eldest goes through a major attitude phase where any time they walk somewhere in Velaris, she struts up ahead of her family. Cassian copies her so precisely that Nesta has to stop and cover her mouth to keep from wheezing.

When it's time for either daughter to learn to fly, Cassian shows up grinning and fully prepared: wearing full Illyrian armor and giving her a tiny set of her own, a helmet, and their world's equivalent of a neon safety vest. His daughter is mortified, which is exactly what he was going for. Nesta thinks it's kind of sweet though because she realizes he's actually nervous about it.

Nesta loves to read bedtime stories to her girls, but Cassian takes it to another level when it's his turn and both acts them out and does funny voices. This annoys Nesta at first since it has the opposite effect and instead has the girls laughing and not sleeping, but she realizes the memories he's building with them are worth it.

Nesta is constantly worried she's not being a good enough mom, and while she's not perfect (no one is), Cassian listens to her concerns and reassures her that she's doing a wonderful job. He likes to bring up a lot of situations Nesta doesn't always see on her own: like her daughters soaking up everything she does like a sponge, how the eldest in particular tries to copy her in everything she does, and how strong, confident, and safe their daughters feel.

Their youngest daughter is a bit more like Aunt Elain in her interests, and it's her idea to bake Nesta a birthday cake. Cassian and the girls get to work, and although he secretly recruited Elain to share a recipe with them, the cake looks concerning and Cassian somehow ends up with flour all over his face. While it's not pretty, it tastes fantastic, and Nesta's heart is full as she kisses her girls and brushes the flour from Cassian's face.

He is genuinely the sweetest dad with the goofiest sense of humor. He's fair and occasionally embarrassing (on purpose), and the girls grow up never feeling like they aren't loved by both of their parents.

No but picture it, Nessian's last kid is their only son (they have like 7 daughters). He's the spitting image of Cassian minus his eyes, those are all Nesta.

But, their son doesn't want to be warrior. He doesn't want to fight or go on adventures. Instead he shares his mother's passion in music, but falls in love with musical theater. He wants to be an actor.

So the Lord of Bloodshed and Lady Death are literally taking him to auditions and rehearsals. Imagine sitting next to the two of the fearsome warriors of the Night Court sitting stone face waiting for their son to emerge.

It took some time for Cassian to wrap his head around the idea of his son being an actor, but when he saw him emerge from his first play (picture any elementary school play), seeing the joy on his son's face, Cassian never looked back. He learns about stage directions and how to read music (he's getting there but to be fair his mentor is Gwyn who can be a little intense).

Nesta starts getting involved in the theater. She helps her son become an amazing dancer so that his skills are the ones that casting director is seeing and not who his family is. Nesta ends up making a lot of his earlier outfits (with the help of Elain and Emerie).

They don't pick favorites among their kids, but it's clear that their baby boy is the golden child. He's also 10000% a mama's boy (to the point that his older sisters convince him to ask Nesta for something they want bc she'll probably say yes to him).

They're so proud of him as he grows to become a famous actor. He becomes so good at playing a part he even tricks his high lord uncle sometimes. His other uncles and aunts are so impressed with him! His aunt who's high lady goes to him help her with public speeches.

And he was born on the anniversary of their mating ceremony. Literally he was born with a golden light around him. He shows the world Illyrians are more than just warriors. They can be anything they dream.

Nesta blinks, forcing her eyes not to burn. "You love me?" She manages, keeping her voice cool. She can't be seen like this, she can't let him see her like this. Not when she is the viper, the sharp tongued creature of cruelty. Not when he is the protector of his people, the defender of his land, and all she seems to be able to do is hurt those around her. He is the knight, and she is the dragon to be slayed, not the maiden to be loved.

But Cassian still says, "I do. More than anyone before. More than..." He swallows, the movement of his throat thick and emotion-filled. "I have never felt for anyone else the way I feel about you. I...I met you, and I simply wanted you, and I couldn't figure out why at first, but I didn't care. I didn't care that my brother thought you were vicious and unforgivable, I didn't care that you'd been labeled as difficult by everyone who didn't have the decency to get to know you, I didn't care that you didn't seem to have any desire to be nice. I didn't want you to be nice. I just wanted you. And I couldn't stop myself from falling in love with every single part of you, and I'm..." He chokes off again, rubbing at his eyes for a moment, brows pinched. When he looks at her again, there is no guard up. No shield of brutish swagger, no teasing glimmer of mirth, nothing whatsoever clouding those hazel eyes. "I'm sorry if I ever made you feel that you had to change in order for me to love you. I am sorry that I didn't do a better job of showing it. That you even have to ask." He hums slightly, not quite a chuckle. He casts his gaze to the side, as if he is almost embarrassed. "It felt so strong to me for so long that I just thought you'd know."

Nesta blinks, finding to her dismay that her eyes are wet. She tries to force her vocal chords into movement.

"You love me." She repeats. It's all she manages to choke out, any other words caught in her throat. Cassian offers a watery smile.

"I love you."

There are many things she wants to say. Why? How? What about the things I've done? What about the monster I've become? What about the monster I've always been? A part of her wants to push him away, slice into him with a knife of words that will never dislodge from his heart. Well I could never really love a bastard born brute like you. So don't bother.

But it wouldn't be the truth. And it feels like Cassian carved out a piece of his very soul and placed it in her hands, waiting to see if she would smother it or cherish it or throw it away or give it back. So dishonesty doesn't feel like an option. She swallows down her tears and fragility.

"I love you too, Cassian."

Somehow, she feels like she stands stronger after saying the words out loud. And even if she is a monster that doesn't deserve his love, the look on Cassian's face is so utterly elated that she thinks, for just a moment, that perhaps it doesn't matter. Maybe, if he can look at her that way despite it all, if he can love her that way, then maybe being a monster isn't such a bad thing.

Both Cassian and Azriel knew how to “free” them when no one else could.
