Kaladin not being able to make Szeth open up about his feelings and thinking "Oh no, this is harder than I thought it was going to be, I guess I'm going to have to make stew" like it's his secret weapon got me laughting so hard. Not only that, but the poor thing not being able to cook nearly killed me. I feel his Bridge Four spirit, but the whole scene was just so comedic.

I remember being a little shocked at how Nomad was acting for most of The Sunlit Man, the way he just didn't care about others around him and how he spoke so bitterly and with no respect for anyone. Now, I know that it made sense considering what he had been through, but after realizing he was Sigzil, that really bothered me. What had happened to that curious, excited Windrunner that we know from the Stormlight Archive?

But now I just finished rereading The Way of Kings and you know what? Sigzil acted almost exactly like that when he was a slave. Before Kaladin saved him and the rest of Bridge Four, Sigzil was bitter and rude and just didn't care about anything or anyone.

It's great writing from Sanderson, of course. But my heart breaks even more for Sigzil. The fact that he had to go back to that mentality that he had when he was a slave so long after... It's just tragic.

Cosmere Characters at a Greasy Spoon Diner

If Cosmere characters wandered into a greasy spoon diner from our world, what would that be like for them?

1. Szeth & Nightblood

They just want the restaurant to live up to its promises.

Szeth: [staring intently at his spoon] Szeth: Hmmm...they say that this is a "greasy spoon" restaurant, and yet, this spoon seems remarkably clean. Nightblood: Gasp! That sounds evil! Szeth: We must not jump to conclusions, Sword-Nimi. Nightblood: You're right! Maybe it's a mistake! Nightblood: Waiter! More grease!

2. Siri & Susebron

They decide to order a little bit of everything. This is a mistake.

Siri: T-This "appetizer plate" is the size of my head! Siri: What could the regular portions possibly be like?? Susebron [gripping her hand tightly]: Siri...I'm scared... Siri: I'm scared too...

3. Sazed & Vin

Let's just say that Sazed picked the wrong restaurant for etiquette lessons.

Sazed: And remember, Vin, when you are eating in public or at an event, you must assume that someone could be looking at you at any time. Sazed: At every moment, you must be the picture of poise and grace. Vin: [Looking up from her giant hamburger, face covered in ketchup] Sazed: ... Sazed: Never mind.

4. Elend & his friends

Let's just say that Elend picked the wrong restaurant to discuss philosophy at.

Elend: ...Anyway, that's what I've been thinking about the treatise. What about you all? Jastes: Well, personally, I think the "greatest good" is this mac 'n' cheese! Telden: Ha ha, yeah!! Elend: ... Elend: Never mind.

5. Lift & Wyndle

Orders a stack of pancakes that is taller than she is.

Lift: [eyes glistening with tears] Wyndle: A-Are you all right, mistress? Lift (in a whisper): It's the stormin' promised land.

6. Kaladin, Shallan, & Adolin

You know how greasy spoon waitresses notoriously call everyone "hon"?

Waitress: Careful--plate's hot, hon. Kaladin: [small smile] Shallan: Oh? What's with that look, Kal? Kaladin: I-It's just kinda sweet. Kaladin: "Hon." Adolin (too intensely): You like pet names??

7. Ham & Dockson

You know, Ham. He can find philosophy in anything.

Ham: "All-day breakfast." Ham: But if it's served all day, can it really be called "breakfast"? Dockson: ...Just eat your scrambled eggs.

8. Dalinar & Sadeas

9. Wayne

Immediately settles in.

Wayne: [wearing a trucker hat, eating a huge slice of apple pie and sipping his coffee] Wax: It's been three hours, Wayne. You've eaten enough food for an army! Wayne: Listen, place like this is an island of light in the endless darkness... Wayne: Gotta fuel up my truck, and gotta fuel up myself. Wayne: This endless coffee's the only thing separatin' man from the possums, ya know. Wax: ... Wax: What

10. Bridge Four

I just really think they'd like it there.

Rock: Ha! This plate is bigger than even MY head! Sigzil: Kinda bland, for an omelet, but at least there's a bottle of hot sauce. Huio: [covertly adding his own spices to the chili] Moash [eye twitching]: I know I need to stop saying yes to the coffee refills, but they keep offering them! Lopen: ...And then I said, "chili? It's actually quite hot!" Lyn: Was the waitress amused? Lopen: ...No. Skar (whispering): I can't believe a chicken fried this steak...
