life lately ☀️
Hope you all are doing well (and that your saves are safe from the recent patch craziness)! I've been playing the Sims offline bc I'm very protective of my little families. I usually wait a couple of days after each game update, but this recent scare has kept me offline for longer than usual. I have a ton of mods that I'm in the process of logging into a Notion database + eventually updating, so I don't mind too much. Just a bit annoyed bc I actually was considering getting Crystal Creations upon release. Alas.
I'm also in the process of building my first PC! I know almost nothing about computer science or engineering, but I've wanted a desktop for years and it's far more cost effective to build your own machine than hit up Best Buy. Just waiting for the final parts to be delivered this afternoon and I can get started! Once it's finished, I'll transfer the Sims over to my new computer. I'm super excited to download a shit ton of extra mods and actually have my game boot up in less than 5 minutes 🥰 my laptop is really good, don't get me wrong, but it's not optimized for gaming (and it already broke on me a few months ago). I'll post pics when everything's done!
Other than that, not too much progress in terms of things I can post. My personal save file is going great, but I'm not really comfortable posting pics from it (mostly bc it's centered around characters from a book I'm about to query for traditional publication 😅). I've also been mad busy with work and novel editing, so I haven't had as much time as I'd like to play the Sims.
Hoping to post more soon!

Ask Answers: July 10th
I really let asks get away from me lately. I was super focused on working on that Patreon Moment. With that done I can finally think about doing other things, so here’s a new collection of answers!
Thank you for sending in questions everyone ^^.
For the new Patreon moment, will you be able to reference it in step 4? Or just like a tiny nod to it if you pick certain choices?
There won’t be. I’m sorry if you were hoping for that! The Patreon moment is meant to be entirely optional, it’s not something that gets you extra content in the main game.
Is the new CG artist the main one now? :0 I’ve noticed theres been a difference in the art style recently. Is the old CG artist still going to make art for the game? :0
The original artist still makes CGs for the game sometimes, but he mainly focuses on character sprites.
Are you going to put the NSFW our life moment on a website other than patreon? I would love to get it but I can't use patreon atm.
I don’t know. I'm afraid we can't release the Patreon Moment on a normal game storefront because we can't mix 18+ content with our family friendly game. If there's some other place similar to Patreon where it's not the normal type of full-scale public content releases we'd consider using that, but I’m not sure if there is another site that’s better than Patreon in that regard. I'm sorry.
Out of curiosity, in all of your games so far, which characters in each were the most fun to write? They obviously don't have to be your favorite characters!
Buffalo Seer in AFA, really everyone in XOD/XOBD is pretty equally entertaining to write, The Guide in LoV, and Cove in OL!
idk if you accept "personal" questions, but is there anything you've been watching/ listening to lately
Mostly, I’ve been watching/listening to Authortube videos as of late! It’s people who talk generally about the process of how books become traditionally published and/or share their own experience as they attempt to be published. I don’t have an interest in writing normal text based books, but it’s really interesting to hear about that world. I’m listening to a video about royalties right now as I answer these asks.
Will one of the desserts we get to pick be fudge? That'd be such a cute reference!
Haha, yeah, it should. Unless I completely blank on it and forget when trying to include the various referential food options.
I don't know if this has been asked previously but what would be the approximate heights for the presets MC can choose from Step 2 ~ 4? Are there any measurement you had in mind? Sorry if I didn't make myself clear kk I've been struggling with my English lately 💀
I don’t know, ahah. I didn’t have any numbers in mind for that. So it’s whatever you imagine it is!
I noticed a bug with the Patreon moment when it comes to what your character wears. When Jamie and Cove are kissing while my character only had dresses selected, I had both the option to remove the dress or to remove the shirt... Picking one of the options to interact with Cove, after he removed his shirt, it had Jamie remove their shirt followed by ther pants despite only having dresses picked.
Thank you for reporting ^^
I keep refreshing steam to see when the new doc for xobd will be released. I noticed you haven't posted anything about it in quite some time. Would it be possible to ask about a timeline/potential date? (If it's even this year—) I know you and your team are probably working super hard, I'm just super curious! ~Thank you!~
There are more stories done, I just haven’t gotten around to publicly releasing them. Hopefully I will have a chance to spend the time on that sooner rather than later!
hello!! i’m not sure if it’s an update but i’ve just replayed our life and at the end i can’t propose to cove anymore? :(( i’ve actually tried playing twice but the options are not there anymore, did you guys remove the options? i’m sorry if you’ve answered this before!! thank you and have a good one :)
I’m afraid things haven’t been changed or removed, so I think you might’ve accidentally picked the wrong things somewhere along the way and locked yourself out of being able to propose by mistake. Sometimes you meant to say you want to get married but instead you mis-click and have it so the MC isn’t thinking about marriage or something. All I can suggest is starting from the beginning of Step 3 and making sure to follow the steps listed in the FAQ. I’m sorry for that.
Did yall remove some of the options for when youre making out with Cove in the charity moment? I could've sworn you could grab his bonkadonk and its not there anymore
This is the same situation as the above. We didn’t remove things and you’re not wrong that there are sometimes those options. But there are various choices you have to make to get those options and it sounds like you accidentally missed something. If your relationship isn’t long-term, you can’t do it for example.
HI IM SO EXCITED I CAN FINALLY GET THE STEP 3 DLC
Thank you for getting it!
Is Shiloh super totally straight bc I’m very gay and a huge Shiloh fan, would my man make an exception?😩
Sadly, he is one of our super straight characters. I’m sorry.
Hi, I have a very dumb question. In Step 2 does Cove not wanna share his drink with us at the mall (or rather why he stops drinking it) because it's an indirect kiss? Or is it like ...weird to him to share? Because if I remember right he eats off our spoon in the birthday scene right?
Yeah, he’s awkward about it because he likes the MC and it feels very personal to share a straw with his crush.
Hi! If you don't mind me asking, who is the artist for OL2? Their style is so pretty!
Thank you for saying so! This is her Twitter- https://twitter.com/redridingheart
Do Beginnings & Always and Now & Forever exist in the same universe?
Yep! XOXO Droplets also exists in the same universe. It’s one big GB Patch world, haha.
Do Pran's parents regret the way they raised him? Do they feel ashamed of it?
No. They’re the type of people best cut out because they’re not gonna change. Which is why Pran does go very limited contact when he’s an adult.
Hi! I just wrapped up my second playthrough of Our Life, and I absolutely adore it, but I had a question. I went to the gallery and found I was missing 2 CGS (specifically Step 1-3 and 2-3) and I had no clue where they would've shown up. Which moments are those found in?
You get it by telling Cove about his dad offering you money to be his friend in Step 1 and Step 2. You can’t get both in one playthrough, since you can only tell Cove the truth once. I’m really glad you liked it!
Hi hi! Please, how tall is Baxter and Derek? Love the game so much and I can't wait to see more!
I don’t know, aha. I think Baxter was around 5′10 and Derek was like 5′8/5′9, maybe. I really am not one who has specific heights for things in mind.
is adult cove a bottom, top, or switch?
A switch, though would choose the top if he had to pick.
I was wondering if there is a way to transfer save data? Even if through the game files. I wanted to be able to transfer my save data from my desktop over to my laptop so that I could continue playing right where I left off from but I'm not entirely sure how to go about that.
If you save the save folder/persistent data of the game from your desktop and put it into the game folder on your other device, that could work.
Hi! Is it possible for us to know the date when our life: now and forever comes out on steam? Sorry if you've mentioned it before but I haven't seen it and I'm looking foward to that happening and just wanted to know :)
It’s gonna be a long time, I’m afraid. There’s no estimate right now.
I started playing Our Life with my sister a while ago, and I think you guys should know that we discovered your secret. >:)
L from death note and Cove are clearly the same person, and this whole game is just an origin story!!
I’ve never seen that show so I’m sorry to say I don’t understand the connection/reference you’re trying to make. I’m pretty out of the loop when it comes to media. I don’t watch movies or TV.
Will OL2 have options for disabled MCs?
I understand if it's too complicated, just curious
Unfortunately, it’s not really something we have a plan for. We couldn’t finish the game if we tried to include every disability and have it be meaningful. It’d just be too much content to create. But if we decide to only include a few, how would we choose which disabilities get to be represented and which are left out? I don’t know. It’ll probably have to be something we don’t include as an option again, sadly. I’m sorry.
playing our life > anything else
Haha, I’m glad you’re enjoying it.
Honestly, I would like to thank Our Life for helping me come to terms with my sexuality. Before, I never would've actually thought that it was possible to like boys romantically and still be asexual. Almost all of the BL visual novels I've read had unskippable sexual content in them and it honestly just didn't click with what I feel. I'm glad I found Our Life. I love the game, the developers, and this fandom so much. Now, I can safely come out as homoromantic AND asexual (at least anonymously here anyway; my parents are still huge homophobes 😂).
Aw, it’s great to hear you felt comfortable being yourself in the game! That’s wonderful. I’m really sorry about your parents, though.
Will the demo for OL2 be on android? Really not sure if I could wait any longer than I have to aha
Yeah, it’ll be available for Android once we eventually release a demo!
Do all these reveals perhaps mean development is progressing ahead of schedule? Please let that be the case I'm already obsessed with Qiu
No, sorry, aha. Art comes along much faster than script/programming-work for us. It’s gonna be a long time before the game is a finished thing you can actually play. But at least we can look at the beautiful images.
Hey! First of all I wanna say I reallllllyyyyy loooovvveeee Our Life and XOXO Droplets! I have over 300 hours of playtime on Our Life… Anyways, I was just wondering, are the Derek and Baxter DLCs going to come out at the same time? If not, which one do you plan to release first? :3
They will come out separately and Derek will be first! Glad you like the game.
I keep replaying Our Life to get every possible iteration and I am loving it <3 I was wondering if Cove gets locked out of his confession because MC was talking to Lee, would it be possible to confess to him in step 4?
Yeah, you can avoid the confession in Step 3 and then get it in Step 4.
Hi, my Cove wears bracelets through step 2 and 3 but I still don't get an option to give him a bracelet? I didn't even know that was possible until I seen someone else ask about it lol
Hm, did you use the Cove creator? Maybe there’s a bug where using the creator to add bracelets doesn’t fulfill the requirement to give Cove a bracelet in Step 3.
Wait, I'm dense, when does Baxter appear in step 2? Is it from big park firework? I feel so bad since i really love Baxter and waiting to buy his dlc.
It’s in the Soiree Moment. You have to be just friends with Cove, indifferent, or crushing but not ask Cove to the dance at all. Then while there you can find someone new to dance with. But if you bring Cove to the dance while crushing, the MC won’t wanna dance with anyone else so you can’t get the scene.
In step 2 when we go to the soiree I made my mc go alone and baxter chooses the mc to dance, i'm curious, why did he pick the mc? sorry if this has been asked before!
Because the MC looked to be around his age, seemed to also be searching for a partner, and had nice legs. A perfect option for him.
I read some of the FAQs, and I saw that we could tell Baxter about the condo that he rented there was previously the mean old grandparents. how do we get the mc to tell him that?
It happens in the DLC Moment “Late Shift”. If you don’t have a job you instead get a longer scene with Baxter.
I don’t know if you’ve addressed this or not, but are you planning on paying voice actors for our life: now and forever?
Yeah, we pay our VAs in all our projects.
hey can i ask how you did the moments thing in ol? im trying to get into making visual novels and while im VERY sure its out of my comfort zone and all that atm i kinda wanna know just for the future, bc im p sure it would work well for something i wanna do :O but its also fine if you cant say for other reasons :>
I’m afraid I’m not sure what you mean. Are you asking how we programmed the screen or something script related? Adding Moments like that is pretty straightforward, though. You just have buttons that open to different labels and then the scripts are essentially individual short stories/vignettes. Good luck with your VN!
Since Autumn becomes gender fluid later in the game, will there be a character who remains as he/him to romance in game?
OL1 has the he/him LIs, OL2 is all about other genders.
I don't want to impose on your creative plans, but a parrot could possibly make a good pet in an OL-type game? They're pretty long-lived and likely to still be thriving by the end even if the MC got them back in step 1.
I do appreciate the suggestion, but I’m afraid it’s not likely going to happen. I understand there are technically some animals that could theoretically live long enough to last the whole game that or we could have the MC only get a pet after some years have already passed. But the many things that would have to be considered/accommodated for makes it just something we probably can’t manage adding. I’m sorry.
As time passes will we be able to see Qiu and Tamarack's other stage arts as well?
They are both so cute i can't wait to be friends with them!
Yeah, we’ll show content from other Steps in the future. It’ll be a little while from now, though.
Can you date Cove and still have your family comfort you in the car?
You can’t get Cove’s Step 3 confession scene if you have the family comfort you in the car. But that’s not the only way to date him. You can get together with him earlier in the game or later on in Step 4.
Is Mc always going to be the one walking down the aisle or could Cove do it? Also could you choose to have one of your moms walk you?
No. Cove wouldn’t want to walk down the aisle like that and the MC automatically respects that. And the MC also gets to have their preferences respected, so it’s up to you whether they want to do an aisle walk or not. You also can pick who, if anyone, walks with you.
Once step 4 is out, will you be able to go the whole game on crush/love without either of you confessing?
Yes, as long as you tell the game you don’t want to progress the relationship. Even in Step 4 it won’t force you to officially get together.
Howdy, so in Step 4, there will be any Romance with Derek that is not part of any dlc?
He’s only a friend unless you get his romance story.
Will the step 4 in OL2 be one big step or are you considering moments?
Step 4 is just an epilogue in both games.
hi kind of a weird question but!! we know tht cliff doesn't start dating again but. wht abt flings? like does he ever do 1 night stands or anything? thank u!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nope. Cliff has a very small interest in sex. If he’s not in a real relationship with a partner he’s crazy about it simply isn’t something he feels a need for, so one night stands wouldn’t even cross his mind.
sorry if you've already answered this, but i was wondering if there were plans for there to be bonus love interests in OL2 like how we have derek and baxter in OL1.
Maybe! There are side characters who could be given romance stories, but whether or not it will happen depends on funding and how long everything else takes to finish.
I don't know if i'm allowed to ask about ol2 here yet, if not u can ignore this or answer it later. My question is can you date one of them and be good friends with the other? I don't want to be strangers with the other bcs i love them both a lot :<
Yes you can!
what patreon level do i have to be to unlock the nsfw moment? im on the $5 one right now, will that give me access to the moment, or just access to the moment progress?
That’ll give you access! Tier 2 and anything higher allows the player to download it.

I Won’t Back Down - Five Hargreeves x OC
Word Count: 1,982
You can stand me up at the gates of hell But I won't back down I'm gonna stand my ground Won't be turned around And I'll keep this world from dragging me down

Pt. 3- Monday, April 1, 2019
The morning of the first dawned with a bright blue sky and perfect spring temperatures, almost in mocking irony of the fate it would meet later on that same day. Suspecting nothing amiss, Lola began her usual morning routine of getting ready for school. After brushing her teeth, she went to her closet and decided on a pair of jeans, a white, long-sleeved v-necked shirt with black polka-dots and after brushing her hair, hesitated over a choice of hats that she owned. While there was no strict dress code at her school, she did like to make a good first impression on Mondays. The rest of the week was up for grabs.
Coming to a decision, she reached for a yellow hat with a navy-blue ribbon around the crown that was tied in a bow and placed it jauntily on her head. The brunette was somewhat known around school for her unique accessories so she’d only been indecisive over which style she’d wanted, not actually whether or not to wear a hat. She then pulled on a pair of riding-styled boots and picked up her backpack, sliding her deck of cards into the back pocket of her jeans. Lunchtime was usually a boring affair so it was often when she would practice her magic- sometimes with a crowd to entertain.
On her route to school, Lola passed the familiar Umbrella Academy house and wondered what transpired within the walls, remembering the strange man she’d met the previous week. She wondered how long it had been since all of the siblings had seen each other since from Vanya’s book, it hadn’t seemed like they’d lived under the same roof for a long, long time. A smile flickered across her face as she thought of grown-up superheroes attempting to act like real siblings and the interesting, chaotic bickering that might ensue.
(Of course, she had no idea that such arguments might result in the end of life on earth.)
After that, the day passed as it usually did, with millions and billions of people completely unaware of what the night would bring.
--
Once dinner was over, Lola scraped her plate clean and set it in the dishwasher before turning it on to run, blatantly unaware that this would be the last time she did such a mundane action for a long, long time. Then, she made her way into the family room where her mother, father and uncle were sitting on the couch about to watch TV. Both men had their traditional after-dinner drink of two fingers of whiskey while her mother sipped on spiked hot coffee.
“Mom?” Lola asked.
“Yes, dear?”
“I’m going to the basement now, all of the dinner dishes are cleaned up.”
Her mother’s blue eyes- the ones she’d inherited- flicked to the younger girl, “alright, but don’t stay up too late. It’s a school night, you know.”
Her uncle grinned, “yeah,” he said, breaking to take a sip from his glass, “wouldn’t want you to show up all grumpy for school tomorrow.”
Lola sighed and nodded in acceptance, “alright, I’ll do my best,” she said, knowing it was more than likely she’d lose track of time anyway.
Moving first towards her mother, then father and finally her uncle, she gave them each a goodnight hug and exchanged their daily I love yous.
(She would be grateful that these were the last words she’d ever said to her family. At least she wouldn’t have to live wondering if her family had known she’d loved them.)
Then, she went to the basement.
Not even a mile away, the beginnings of an altercation were occurring at the house the size of a single block where the seventh, disregarded member of the family of superheroes was receiving a hostile welcome at the introduction of her new boyfriend, Leonard Peabody.
--
Lola liked her basement. It wasn’t terribly large but it wasn’t terribly small, either. Half of it was unfinished and the other half was lived-in, creating a perfect balance. In the unfinished side, metal shelves that one might see in a hardware store stood floor-to-ceiling with various tools and stored holiday items. Paint cans, electric machinery, extension cords and other items one would normally find in a shed were scattered haphazardly along the shelves.
In the other half, a carpeted floor of some green color stretched from the back wall to right before Lola’s writing desk. On top of it sat an old, brown-leather couch, a black wooden coffee table from IKEA and a TV hung mounted on the wall. After the carpet ended, removable foam-padded tiles formed the floor. This was the area where Lola’s desk sat which was a large, white table. The desktop itself was almost empty except for her half-filled notebook, three different-sized candles, a pencil sharpener and a pencil holder. Her papers- both for school and other things- were stored in a hand-me-down brown file cabinet that stood to the left of her workspace.
Before sitting down to write, the brunette carried out her ritual warm-up: lighting the candles, flipping to the next available page, sharpening her pencil and placing her reference books on her desk- The Book Thief, of course, and her new book from Vanya Hargreeves. Then, she pulled her deck of cards from her back pocket and placed the rectangular box carefully on the lower-left corner of her desk, making sure to match up the corners of the box with the outlined shape created by the corner. She wasn’t sure why she did this, it just was something she absolutely had to do before she finally sat down.
Once finished, Lola made sure to flip the electric lights off and returned to her seat which was a rolly-chair with one broken wheel. She began to write surrounded by her small pool of glowing, flickering light.
Today’s memory is from when I was six. (Note to self: find a better opening.) It was my first time at the store for hours on end. Usually, a babysitter would come by and pick me up but I suppose she cancelled. (NtS: get more details. Just kidding, nobody cares about that.) Anyway, I was super bored and since I was little, I didn’t have any schoolwork to do. I wandered around the store for a bit, probably causing mischief. Anyway (you already said that, dummy) the funny part is that I sat down at a group of mannequins because there weren’t any other seats and I must’ve sat so still that everyone thought I was one because when I finally stood up, a woman screamed. I didn’t know why at the time but it happened again when I was older. Then I started doing it for my own amusement. It was funny to see people think that I was a fake, plastic doll only to realize I was actually real. Sometimes, I even went to the back and dressed in clothes that would soon be modeled by the mannequins- although I think the effect was ruined because I didn’t fit them.
--
A story up and a block over, the altercation had grown to a full-blown verbal assault, the main four members of the family heatedly questioning the new boyfriend’s insistence on them coming to their sister’s concert. The seventh member, feeling hurt and angry that her family wouldn’t, just once support her, felt the tension build up within her, her emotions unusually high from the lack of medication she’d consistently taken for years until this week.
--
The spot was also great for people-watching. While Gimbel Brothers has mostly ordinary clients, there are some cases that are more noteworthy (NtS: fix wording, sounds awkward). There are many people who bring children to the store as well. On Mondays, there is an average of twelve children, usually after school. The number varies throughout the week until Saturday where there are usually fifteen or twenty. One time, as an outlier during the holidays, there were twenty-five. I know this because I counted them. I don’t usually do it intentionally and I’m sure I miss some customers but for some reason, all the numbers stick in my head. The funny thing is, I’m terrible at math. I’m also really good at cards, though. I’ve never lost a game of War or Go Fish. My uncle says I’m a counter, which I suppose is true. I’ve also counted all the sequins on one of our formal dresses, just for fun. There were two-hundred and eighty-six.
--
As the sky grew dark outside, the argument in the large house had reached an all-time high with Leonard Peabody outwardly insulting his girlfriend’s largest brother, inciting his anger and riling him up purposefully, causing him to throw the first punch. The seventh member of the family desperately tried to pull her boyfriend away, to save him from an assault that he would surely not survive. She was right about that, but there was nothing she could do. There was only one person Number One listened to and it wasn’t her.
--
Anyway, back to people-watching. There was once a rich woman who came to our store. No one could figure out why; we’re not exactly the high-end type. She brought her daughter with her, a pretty, blonde girl with bright blue eyes. Almost like mine, I think, but they looked better on her. I heard her tell Brittany that she wanted to get her granddaughter ‘normal clothes,’ except she said it like an insult. I figure that when her granddaughter came to visit, all she provided were expensive outfits and the girl spilled on them, teaching her the lesson of buying cheaper clothes for little kids. She didn’t say all of that but I made up the story to go along with her request.
--
Standing over Leonard’s body, the seventh member of the Hargeeves turned on her brother, eyes shining white against her pale face. In his hand, he held a bloody, glass eyeball. Her siblings crowded together, trying to calm her, but she spent all of her life being calm and she was tired of it. Turning her gaze to the academy, the building shook under a ten-point-zero earthquake, the bricks and concrete falling down in rapid succession. Tearing her gaze away from the sight of her childhood hell, she let sound waves resonate through the street, knocking over buildings and causing them to collapse, burying her siblings in rubble. Carelessly, she walked away as anger, sadness and hatred fueled her steps to her apartment where she changed and gathered up her violin for the world’s last performance.
--
She was very posh too, with fur and everything. She stood still long enough that I could study her coat, which had thirty spots. I’m not sure if it was real fur (if it was, she’s a horrible person), but she certainly acted very high-class, even speaking a little nasally and tilting her head up to look down on Brittany. I think it might’ve been because of Brittany’s skin color. The woman didn’t seem to be very accepting of hard-working people that looked different from her.
--
At ten o’clock pm, the close of the concert, sound waves so large they felled the building and many blocks over swept through the city. A short, dark-haired woman with a glowing white light in the center of her chest rose above the destruction, sending out pulses of sound to the far-reaching corners of the world. With no one to stop her, no one to shoot a gun next to her ear, the bottled power exploded from her chest sharing with everyone the feelings of hurt and neglect that she’d been forced to endure throughout her childhood. One person alone survived in a basement not much deeper than the fictional character’s she admired, writing away and completely unaware that the world above had changed beyond recognition.

✧I Need You✧ Chapter 18 [5%]
It was sad when life had to eventually resume. A week into the new year you found yourself up on the back pathway of the mansion as he flew off into the sky. It was pointless to stand there and watch him disappear into the distance, but part of you couldn’t help it. You’d done it a few times now, and every single one you wondered if it would be the last time you’d see him. And you weren’t sure whether or not you wanted that ache to dull.
“The Ten Rings have a ship boarded and locked.” A military operation he was honing in on, if only because they were behind it. It helped his case a little bit that the Navy couldn’t free their own men, but hustling in on a government operation was asking for trouble.
Tony had been furiously researching every little thing he could find on the Ten Rings. The people that had kidnapped him. Every time he went out after them you remembered Coulson’s warnings in the debrief, “They’re not to be trifled with.”
And yet Tony was keen on doing a whole lot of trifling. As JARVIS read out the mission clear log hours after, you started wondering if it was just blind revenge. For someone that claimed he wanted information, all those operations ended up in every single terrorist dead. You also wondered if that was going to take a toll on him sooner rather than later.
Playing good guys versus bad guys… taking lives…
“I don’t remember asking for your help.” Nick Fury’s voice came over the computer in the lab and you turned away from your Stark Industries work to tend to your Iron Man work. He looked mad from his little square on the desktop. “Inserting yourself into my missions is begging for trouble. You want trouble?”
“As I heard it, your boys were stuck. So you can send a check to the office.” You were simultaneously scared and at the same time unafraid of Nick Fury. Mostly because you knew showing fear to him was probably the worst mistake you could make.
“Haha. Very funny. You think you’re cute, huh?”
Tony’s face came up on screen next to Fury’s. “As a button, I’ve been told. But really it’s more my chiseled handsomeness that people comment on the most.”
“How are you two gonna turn me down and then keep sniffing around my operations? You’re lucky you haven’t been dragged to a black site.” Despite his threats, he didn’t sound like he was even close to thinking about going through with them.
“What about something more like a gold site? Maybe a light cobalt?”
“Keep yucking it up, Stark. Yap, yap, yapping away.” You were wisely choosing to stay out of this as much as you could. “If I send you another packet you’d better sign your names to it. Otherwise keep out of my business. Or else.” And just like that he was gone.
“Or else. Pfft.” He was also resolved to be unafraid of Nick Fury and SHIELD.
“Maybe we shouldn’t keep pushing him, Tony.”
He made a face at you. “Look, when the guy stops coughing up dime-store villain lines, I’ll consider it. Until then, we’ve got work to do that they clearly can’t.”
You twirled a pencil around between your fingers. “It’s all fun and games for you, but if he comes after me, I don’t exactly have a bullet-proof suit to climb into and fly away in.” All you had were mind games. Ones you weren’t even good at. Ones you didn’t really want to be good at. It wouldn’t serve you if agents dropped in in the middle of the night and carried you off, anyway.
“About that...”
“No, Tony.”
“I’ll paint it your favorite color.”
“No.”
The world could only handle one Iron Man.
And you could barely even handle that. But for him, you’d press on.
------------------------------------------------------
“So you think it’s right for Tony Stark to operate a weapon unauthorized by our military?” Valentine’s Day and you’d rather be doing anything but getting yelled at by a Fox News correspondent. “We call that vigilante justice, and it’s punishable by law.”
“Tony has been protecting people. Saving people. Saving countless lives. Destroying weapons aimed at innocent people. Cleaning up a decades long mess that no one else has had the means to put a stop to.”
“Who gave him the right? Certainly not me! Here at Fox News we don’t condone vigilantes!”
“Is the peaceful silence hurting your bottom line?"
You got in real trouble for that one. But it was worth all the undignified screams that came with it. For all the anchors did decrying Stark Industries and the mad woman sitting on the throne aside mad self proclaimed king Tony Stark, stocks shot through the roof. That may have had more to do with tentative whisperings about the Stark Expo relaunching. But you’d take well deserved victories where they came.
The world was different now. The louder, angrier, more violent voices were fading into the shadows. Scared they’d be heard by Iron Man and snuffed out. No one wanted their locations found. No one wanted their weapons destroyed. For once murder rates dropped. Killings stopped. War came tumbling down.
Some things about it still bothered you. Would always bother you. But you could only ever show a brave face and make sure you stood by Tony’s side. That was your job.
Besides that…
You loved him.
And as long as it kept making sense, as long as he didn’t fall down the path of Obadiah, choosing who lived and who died gleefully or start trying to turn a profit off of Iron Man’s activities… things would be okay. The fact that he’d turned down several military hearings and briefings and requests was all the proof you needed. It felt like every day those tensions were growing.
No more so than when the military tried to use him. “Thanks for taking the heat.” His voice and face came from your laptop in the early AM, just past three.
You’d been unable to sleep, not unusual when he was out. The bed was too empty to sleep in, so you’d curled up on the couch. Waiting. Waiting for this. “Just doing my job.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen that shade of red on TV.”
“She basically blended into her dress.” Snorting to yourself, taking a long sip of tea that had gone cold some time ago. “Are you on your way home?”
“Couldn’t get there faster if I tried.” The real reason he’d called, no doubt. Even so far away you could tell. He was upset.
You cradled the laptop closer. “What happened?”
“I know the military has been in a real hole since I pulled out of weapons, but letting Hammer take a lead on anything- how desperate can you get?” It sounded pretty bad. But you were already well aware. As soon as you’d read Hammer’s name on the dossier in the file, you knew this mission wasn’t going to be an easy one. A B-2 bomber had been charged across enemy lines inside a Hammer transport. It was very likely he was the sole reason Tony had been asked to come in.
“What did he screw up now?”
“He blew a whole mission on promises that his tech worked the way it was supposed to. Am I the only one with a brain out here?” He shook his head softly, roll of his eyes. “And Ross has another thing coming.”
That would be General Thaddeus Ross, who had asked for Tony’s help on a rescue mission. You worried, briefly, that lives had been lost. No doubt a fault of Ross, but Tony would shoulder the blame. A setup? “Talk to me, Tony.” If he was about to be thrown under the bus, purposefully, you needed to know everything.
His eyes squared on the camera, looking as if he was staring at you briefly before they shifted slightly, looking at your video window instead. “They were putting things where they shouldn’t have been, and got caught red handed. They fed me bullshit and sent me in on a shoot-to-kill. They told me it was Ten Rings activity. But it was just… soldiers fighting their own war.” Shaking his head again, eyes dropping for a few seconds. “They tried to trick me into murdering everyone there to cover up their own trail.”
“And blaming you if it ever got out.” It chilled you to your core, thinking about that. The military trying to use him like that. Like old times. Yet it somehow was completely unsurprising. “But you realized it.” Why else would he be debriefing you like that- talking to you, you reminded yourself. Not everything was a mission. You couldn’t let it be.
“Of course I did. On the list of people who think they’re smarter than they actually are, General Ross is sitting pretty right underneath Justin Hammer.”
You nodded. Foolish of them to think they could get one up over him. Even if you had worried. A thought you’d keep to yourself. “So you stop accepting pleas from them, if they can’t be trusted to do the right thing.”
“I’m nobody’s lapdog.” His tone had grown hard. “That is the last time I let someone talk me into flying into a war zone where I can’t tell who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.”
By contrast, you softened your own voice. “You know now.” There was a boom on the front landing, all metal and shockwave. “You’re home?”
“I just got in. Give me a minute, I’ll be right up.” With that his call ended and you couldn’t help but snap your laptop shut and move to stand. He’d still have to get the suit off, but that was no longer a thing you were shy about seeing. And even if he would be upstairs in just a couple of minutes…
It had been days since you’d seen him last. And he seemed pretty slighted. Good will carried you downstairs to the semi-darkened lab. The process of unpacking the suit had gotten much better. You knew Tony had been tinkering with it for a while. He was already out of it, standing at the computer console, pulling on a long sleeved shirt.
Something he did very abruptly as you opened the lab door, startled. “Couldn’t wait one minute? I mean, I know I’m irresistible, but stroking my ego this late in the evening seems like a pretty bad idea.”
Despite him being absolutely right about that you went to put your arms around him, giving him a little squeeze. “Welcome home.”
Easy satisfaction rolled through you when he hugged you back, a little tighter than usual. “Thanks.” His hands went to your shoulders, holding you at arm’s length. Just taking a good look at you. You let him… but there was this new sense of unease. You weren’t sure if it was just you… “Really. I’ll be right there. I just have to update my files.”
You gave him a little nod. “Do you want me to make you some tea?”
“Tea sounds great.”
Leaning up on your tiptoes you pressed a light kiss just underneath his cheekbone. You hadn’t seen him in a few days and just a touch of neediness found its way to you. Between his missions and work… he was very clearly still devoted to you.
Things were good.
You were happy, if not exhausted from work and worry. And he seemed…
How did Tony seem?
“How does tea in bed sound?” You dropped your tone. You weren’t an expert at flirting, but he didn’t need your senses to hear the promises there.
“Like a dangerous adventure.” His grin was weary and you immediately felt bad for choosing now of all times. Now was not a good time. He’d just been pushed around by Ross. Had just flown hours to get home.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. You kissed him on the other cheek, apology in your smile. “Tea and then bed.” Changing up the meaning entirely.
“Sounds perfect.”
You didn’t need much more of an excuse to run off and hide your embarrassment. Lucky he hadn’t called you out on it. He really must have just been exhausted.
------------------------------------------------------
He waited until she was all the way up the stairs and setting a kettle on the stove to lift his shirt again. “JARVIS, have the readings come back from the suit?” He kept his voice low despite the fact there was no way she’d be able to hear him.
“Yes, sir. Blood toxicity levels at 5%.”
The beginnings of a terrible, angry black etchwork had started lining his skin around the Arc Reactor. He’d gotten lightheaded and actually lost consciousness for a few seconds on the flight home. He couldn’t let that happen again. “What’s on the books for Palladium poisoning? Tell me green tea is the cure.” Slumping to sit in his desk chair.
“Unfortunately no, sir. There is no viable research into Palladium poisoning. There is no known cure.”
He sat with that diagnosis, staring blankly out into space. “How about that. We’ll figure something out.” What other choice did he have? “...in the meantime, run me a quick calculation- at the current rate of spread, how long do I have until I don’t have any longer?”
“My current estimate with lean for faster spread as time goes on… I’d say by the end of May.”
A breath of air escaped him, eyes closing, grinning to himself, shaking his head. “So. Either the best birthday present I’ve ever given myself or the last.” A cure- a workaround... or nothing. No other choice.
“Shall I inform Ms. INY?”
“No.” More guttural noise than anything as it exploded out of him. “Not a word. This goes under prime executive files. She can’t know.”
“With all due respect sir, I think you should allow her-”
“I don’t need your respect. Or what you’re about to tell me. You’re not telling her. Are we clear?” She couldn’t know about this. He couldn’t do that to her. He just couldn’t.
“...yes, sir.”
“Window some simulations for element replacement. Don’t wait up for me.” He pushed himself on his feet, knowing if he spent any more time there she’d grow suspicious. He had to keep this away from her. A daunting task on its own considering the thing. He just needed a clear head. And…
To not think about how soon May was coming.
There at the stove she was leaned half over two cups of tea, dunking bags in and out. When she saw him approaching she looked up and smiled like she’d just seen the stars for the first time. It killed him. “Let’s go to bed, honey.”
“Honey. That’s new.”
He put an arm around her and took the offered mug of tea in his other hand. “Trying it out.”
She hummed something soft in thought. “Try it out a few more times.”
“Yes, dear.” Smiling as she lightly elbowed his side.
“One thing at a time, I can only handle so much excitement.”
Her laughter got him going. Quiet and tired. Just basking in the enjoyment of each other’s presence. Upstairs she moved away to sit cross-legged on the bed, staring up at him again with those big wondering eyes. Unable to help himself, he sat next to her, reaching a hand up to cup the side of her face, holding her close, relishing in the close of her eyes and that soft sweet sigh as she leaned into his palm. As he kissed her it only became clearer.
She can’t know.
She can’t know.

TIFU by losing a project I have been working on for almost three months
Obligatory I am on mobile and this actually happened last year, not today.
So a few months ago in late September our computers class started to work on making our own games. We first followed a relatively short tutorial so people new to coding could get the hang of it and so we have some building blocks to base our game off of.
Two weeks later I finished said tutorial and moved on to start adding my own code and expanding the game to be my own. The tutorial had us create an inventory in the game but you could only navigate it using your keyboard. Instead of using the keyboard I wanted to use my mouse for navigating the inventory so I set out to change that.
I decided to copy my project and create an ‘experimental branch’ where I could safely delete the current unnecessary inventory code and replace it with some new code.
Here’s where the TIFU happened. The school and teachers always warned us to NEVER save anything to the desktop or onto the computer because it could potentially wipe. I’m not sure why or how it could happen, but apparently it could, so I always made sure save stuff to my ‘home drive’ which is accessible from every computer and from which my stuff won’t get potentially wiped.
For some reason I stupidly decided to save my ‘Experimental Branch’ in the documents of the computer instead of my homedrive. Unfortunately, I managed to create the inventory I wanted in this experimental branch so I kept using it.
I also never realized my mistake because I opened the project each time through the homepage of Gamemaker Studio 2, instead of finding the file and opening it, which takes a good 3 seconds longer. No thank you.
Fast forward to December. Our games are due in just a few days, I am almost finished and that day I was about to hand it in when I found a bug that caused music to play when it shouldn’t. I was very close to fixing this bug after which I would have put a copy of the file into the ‘hand in’ folder where my file would have been safe.
The next day at school the power goes out. I didn’t think anything of it because I was certain I hadn’t saved my game to the computer and that it was saved onto my ‘homedrive’. The power is back by the next day and I come to school expecting to finish fixing the bug and handing in the game a day early.
I open Gamemaker Studio 2 and don’t see the project I was working on in the quick start options. “Odd” I thought and proceeded to look for it. Well, I bet you can guess what happened, it got wiped. More than two months of work got wiped when the power outage happened. I lost the project which we spent most of the semester on and which counted for most of my grade.
At least I wasn’t the only one that lost the project and the teacher had some mercy on me so I didn’t fail. I’ve been in his classes before and he knew I was ahead of most people in the project so was nice about it.
TL;DR: Saved my project to the wrong place on the computer and it got wiped when a power outage happened, causing me to lose nearly three months of work, though luckily not my grade.

Linux Life Episode 51
Hello folks as I have managed to get myself a quiet moment it’s time to check in with the blog. As I said I will be a bit more sporadic with the posting here this is due to family situations.
So what have I being doing with Linux since the last episode. Well my Kingston 120GB SSD I was running Linux on decided to have issues and for all of the attempts to save it I had to swap it out and replace it with my Integral 120GB SSD.
Luckily because I don’t keep my home directory on the SSD but on a separate 1TB Seagate hard drive no data was really lost. So I had to re-install Namib Linux onto the new drive. This was a bit odd but I got it working.
The installation went smooth but upon restart GRUB would start and then pixelate the screen as the video didn’t initialise correctly. So I went in using mode 3 to just a text prompt but upon signing in this way MATE actually started which was odd but handy.
At first I could not update as Pamac would not download any of the required 538 updates from the base Namib. So I opened a terminal and tried to use pacman. First attempt using ‘pacman -Syu’ it just sat there after updating the main repositories as it failed to download just as Pamac had.
In the end the way I managed to get it working was to use the ‘pacman -Syyuu’ which forces the update. So finally I managed to get the system updated and working. I also managed to install the Nvidia drivers while I was there and all of the previous programs I was using which luckily was not many as I have been pretty quiet on Linux at the moment.
After installing Grub Customizer from the AUR I was able to put Grub into a mode that I knew would work with my ageing monitor. I really must get a new one although this works it’s an old Dell 19 inch monitor with a max resolution of 1280x800 so it really is showing its age. It works fine however and there is no pixel damage so I really can’t complain.
So within an hour I was back up and running and even managed to get my desktop back including my Cairo Dock at the bottom of the screen with all its icons restored and reworking including the Vulkan drivers and DXVK to get games working through Lutris.
However I have not really been playing games lately but it is nice to have that capability should I start using it.
I have however been messing around with stuff. I was playing with the Previous emulator. If you remember I discussed this NeXT emulator before. Well I managed to get a few programs installed using ISOs of the Peanuts Archive including a few games and a few applications.
I have also been messing around with DosBOX and I decided to have a bit of fun playing with some old programming stuff to see if I can remember any of it. I honestly can’t but I installed Borland Turbo Pascal 6.0 for DOS and Borland Turbo C 3.0 for DOS and I was playing with them.
I vaguely managed to get a basic “Hello World” type program that cleared the screen and then waited for a key press to exit but it took me far longer than it should have as I have totally forgotten how to program Pascal and C++ and to begin with could not even remember the keywords.
This could be because the last time I actually did any programming in DOS has to be more than 25 years ago. However I did have fun playing with them and although it won’t lead to anything serious. Trust me I don’t desire to become a programmer as I just don’t have the patience, it is fun to mess around and do small things with.
I did create their own dosbox.conf files so they auto-start in DosBOX from a launcher and now they sit on my Cairo Dock bar along with everything else. I’m sure in time I will kill them off but for now it keeps me vaguely amused in this tricky time.
So that’s what has been happening in my little Linux world so until next episode. Take care.

Oh my god, I’m digging through old files on my backup harddrive and I found this dream from 2011 in which me, @antialiasis, and a baby dragon are on the run from The King of Everything. It is absolutely batshit and I love it:
Okay, so for some reason I was hanging out with Dragonfree. What the hell, subconscious? Why do you always stick my online acquaintances into my dreams? (I think it’s a side effect of that time in my life where all I had were online friends and the fanfic forum was pretty much my entire life, even though that was like 6 years ago.) But at least this time it sort of makes sense—I’ve been working on an off on the Ouen dragons piece a lot lately, adding little touches here and there when I’m bored, so people often ask me what it is, so I frequently launch into explanations of, “Oh hey there’s this writer with a cool fanfic, and I’m doing fanart of it.” “Hey what’s it about?” “Well, it’s kind of hard to explain the plot because it’s basically an awesome reworking of silly ideas from when she was 12.” “ROFL THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOU.” “Erm….yeah. -_-“
Okay then, random tangent aside I was hanging out with Dragonfree I guess. No explanation given. At least my dream self wanted an explanation, though never actually got one. I was at my home house instead of my school house which makes slightly more sense (If I were European I’d sooner visit the US East coast/NY area than the friggin Midwest.)
Kay, I swear the plot was awesomely detailed and amazing but now it is starting to sound really silly and I’m not sure why I’m writing it down. Dangit. It started out like...pretty mediocre at my house (or what was supposed to be my house but looked nothing like it, what.) I think there was some subplot involving something going wrong with her website (some of the layouts weren’t working which was apparently a sign of someone currently stealing things from it? What??? Also one of the styles was really cool and best described as a matrix Articuno. YES.) I dunno. And then there was a hilarious part where my sister walked though the kitchen into the computer room and said something like “When did Beth get here?” And I’m like “Wtf, that’s not Beth.” But then I walked into the room and it was. (So now Beth was somehow at my house too? How did all these people get here?) Dragonfree was in fact back in the kitchen on the computer that was for some reason there (no, not my laptop…a random desktop in the kitchen), and Beth did not appear for the entire rest of the dream. *shrug* Though amusingly at this point I wondered, “Hey since this isn’t the internet, should I call you Dragonfree or by your real name?” but never actually asked it. So I went the whole dream without addressing her by any name (not as weird as it sounds—I don’t use people’s names often.)
But all of this random crap quickly derailed into something involving DRAGONS HOLY CRAP. Okay, so I actually can’t remember how the dragons plotline started dang. I think there were like, different types of dragons (one for each element? This was completely unrelated to Pokémon, however. In fact, I don’t think anything Pokémon ever came up, other than that random bit about her site. I don’t have Pokémon dreams often. What the hell, subconscious.) I think we had the earth dragon or something except I guess it was a baby. And then like, the queen of the world ordered the dragons (she had a lot of them I think) to kill people, except each dragon’s power was only effective on certain people, and the Earth dragon was supposed to kill us. I think I ran and hid in a bush (yeah…because that would save me from the elemental dragon…) but since the Earth dragon was just a baby its power didn’t kill us (and I was confused about why the other dragons’ attacks didn’t hurt because I didn’t know about the whole only-effective-on-certain-people thing). So then I emerged from my hiding place and I think a lot of time had gone by because I saw the events in a slow, limited-animation cutscene type thing (hey…sorta like that game concept art my group’s been planning.) Well the earth dragon was now an adult. I met up with Dragonfree at some sort of dessert table where a servant was putting together sweets for the king. Things like chocolate covered pretzels and bananas. I guess I felt like trolling the king or something, so I stole one of the chocolate bananas, and then we ended up having the guards sent after us (yeah, way to go dream self.) We hopped on a train (like an old style steam engine) except it was rather small, and intended for little kids. Well lo and behold my youngest sister was there. We rode on the train for a bit until my sister climbed on top to check something and was doing it all very not-carefully like someone who has totally climbed on top of a train and started opening hatches a hundred times in their life. Well something went wrong and then she fell off and got tangled in some vines and then the train tried to go through an insanely small tunnel and started shrinking, so we had to get off. And then we found the earth dragon! Except he was a baby again OKAY THEN.
(Thus far there hasn’t been much dialogue only because I can’t remember it. Everyone was actually talking a lot more than this implies. They weren’t all just standing there.) Also I think I spent most of the dream wondering when Dragonfree was going to go back home. Because “oh yeah we’re on adventure and running for our lives, but hey please don’t leave in the middle of all this I wanna hang out some more.” Uh huh. This makes even less sense when you consider that there are no countries and the king of everything is after us.
Well this time the queen was there with the guards so we ran away into this sort of maze of stairs vaguely like a kids’ play area except kind of more serious business. Some of the stairs were in fact escalators that were broken down, and others were so small that we had to slide down then and we were doing pretty good at avoiding the guards. We all regrouped and figured out a way onto the third floor, at which point we were feeling pretty clever, but then WE RAN INTO THE QUEEN OH SNAP. But she was actually on our side the whole time! I think this made more sense in the dream (maybe she knew the earth dragon wouldn’t kill us with its attack? But what about all the people killed by the king’s fire dragon?) Well she did something to the stair area to prevent the guards from getting through while she made a deal with us. So then we had the queen with us, yay?
We were now heading up a mountain! I have no idea what we were looking for at the top. Except first we had to go though some sort of summer-camp type area, where they made us go though inspection (okay?) This involved pushing us under streams of water which I thought were going to be freezing but were actually kind of warm. Kay then. During the next part we were all in a building (at the camp I guess) and a bunch of the campers were watching tv. At this point I thought to myself “Hey it’s weird how this dream is still continuing even though I’m awake.” WHAT? So I thought this part was real, but I was still dreaming it…even though it was real? Now, there have been times I’ve been able to continue a dream while awake and have it actually fit in the dream, as opposed to the lame crap you usually try to add to a dream shortly after awakening until you realize “wait my logic works now and this is stupid.” But anyways…I think around this point was I finally going to ask Dragonfree, “Hey we’ve been running all over a crazy kingdom all day and I’m still not sure what to call you since this isn’t the internet and all.” But at that point I woke up. Well…damn. I mean, it’s better than when you have a dream end at a super-suspenseful point (since we were kind of just wasting time at a camp and I don’t even think the earth dragon was with us anymore). But still I felt the need to go run and grab my laptop and start writing all this down and highly confusing my roommates in the process.
And holy crap LOOK HOW MUCH I WROTE IN HALF AN HOUR. Why can’t I write my fic this fast?
#dreams#I like how I spent an entire paragraph justifying why it was totally Not Weird that Dragonfree was in a dream of mine#we had only just started chatting on IM and I was Super Paranoid about ruining my chances to be friends with senpai#ah 2011... :P

Weird question but do you recommend a chrome book for like studying and work like that bc I’ve heard they can be slow
Hey, not weird at all! I just got mine mid March, but I haven’t noticed it being slow at all! My laptop completely died on me during midterm season and I had a ton of papers and online exams to do, so my plan was to just use this in the meantime and return it to best buy as soon as my work was done and then I could buy an actual laptop. I obviously decided to keep it. I would recommend using a Chromebook for schooling, but only if it’s not going to be your primary device at home like it is mine (if you spend a ton of time on it, anyway)
First off, before I go into pros and cons (no false sense of hope here… under the cut I’ll tell you everything I love about it and everything I hate or get annoyed at), I should mention I’m using the Samsung Chromebook Plus
All in all, I LOVE my chromebook. It’s got its flaws, but most of them have easy fixes. I hope this full length article helps you decide what to do! If your main concern is getting you through school/work, I say go for it!
8/10 would recommend! I’d love to say 10/10, but there are enough flaws that I can’t in good conscience tell you to go get yourself a chromebook knowing it does some real stupid stuff.
Pros:
lightweight - seriously, I spent all day on campus carrying my Dell around in my bookbag and I’ve never been one to have back problems but carrying it around all day hurt. Sometimes I’d literally just abandon my bookbag (with my laptop in it) in the hall in one of the academic buildings while I went to find something to eat all the way across campus. Like, seriously. According to google the UCF campus is 1415 acres. I don’t even feel weight from my Chromebook while I’m walking campus with it in my bag.
Convenience - It’s essentially half laptop, half tablet. You’re getting the best of both worlds. Google play store (so you can play games and use the device as an e-reader) but you also get the internet at full capacity rather than the dullness of a mobile browser.
Stylus apps - This stylus was a lifesaver for me last semester. I had college algebra last semester, and with math I’m always wasting a ton of paper, so I bought a whiteboard I could carry around with me but it took up too much space at the desks in classrooms. With a Chromebook, Google Keep (note taking app) is built in. when I didn’t feel like wasting space (and dropping my calculator, pen, eraser, markers, board) I could just pull up my stylus apps on half my screen and my math modules on the other half.
Also, have you seen my newer editing attempts? Working with just my finger on this device was already pretty good, compared to on my phone. But using the stylus helped me to get a clearer view of everything I was erasing and more wiggle control
Quick boot up time - In the manual, it claims that the chromebook boots up in 10 seconds. I’ve found that it takes about half that time to start up
2 in one - it does have 360 mode, so you don’t have to use it as a laptop all the time. In tablet mode, you get all the essential uses you get in laptop mode (except the ability to split the screen) plus you can use emojis on the touchscreen keyboard that pops up
Apple Music - On my samsung tablet, I can’t access apple music (the app shows up, but I can’t download it). On chromebook, I can. No itunes though, which is a bummer, but I don’t really need it.
Easy streaming - Watching Netflix/Hulu is such a breeze. I haven’t experienced any buffering issues like i constantly did with my last laptop
Amazing touchscreen - With my Dell laptop (which, again, gave out on me) my touch screen often had meltdowns or prevented my touchpad from working. Seeing as how Samsung has essential experience in touchscreen development, I’m not shocked that I’ve never had an issue with this touchscreen
Have trouble remembering urls? no more - Built into the computer, you have what appear to be google (and other brand) apps, but they’re actually shortcuts that take you directly to their respectful websites. Google drive (which is also built in through the files app), Lookout, Google Maps, Weather Channel, etc. I don’t use them, but it’s such a great gesture.
Memory - I use a lot of space and I haven’t even begun to run out yet! There’s also a slot for external memory (an SD card like what you’d insert into your phone something I wish Apple would do instead of making me pay for more storage every month. Unfortunately for me, this doesn’t work for apps. It’s only so that you have another storage method for your files. After my previous laptop died I lost all my running club pics, so with this chromebook, I have the option to just go ahead and save them directly to my SD card so that doesn’t happen again. It’s kind of like using a flash drive for safe keeping except, ya know, it’s not a flash drive replacement.
It’s made to fit YOU - If you don’t want someone to get into your files, they can’t. You sign in with your google account, but you CAN create additional user accounts (which includes a guest account)
Resetting the computer is easy! - You can’t go wrong. Your options are
restore default settings
COMPLETELY wipe the computer of all info (the option you’d choose if you wanted the get rid of the computer, so it’s essentially… factory reset)
Virus control - While there’s no harm in buying yourself an antivirus program, you don’t necessarily need it with Chromebook because google’s actively fighting off viruses for you. I started out using antivirus programs before I realized I didn’t need it. I haven’t had any issues at all with the security of my computer, with or without any kind of protection
Cons
Limited keys - You have to make sure you remember key combinations to perform certain tasks. For example, at first I thought I couldn’t get caps lock on this computer. To do that, it’s alt+search key. scroll to the top of the page? alt+ctrl+up arrow. screenshot in laptop mode? still can’t remember which symbol matches up with that one.
Ctrl Alt…. What? - You don’t have control alt delete anymore. The task manager apparently can only be accessed through settings, which if your chromebook freaks out on you either wait for it to settle down or shut it down are your only two options. Which brings us to con #3.
Freaking out - Lately I’ve been noticing that if I have too many apps open at once, my chromebook will stop funtioning properly for a couple minutes and it’ll do one of two things
shut all my apps down without warning
system reboot
Google Print - It wants to hijack your printer, but I refuse to give google access to store info from my printer. I have my Canon hooked up to my chromebook, but I won’t allow google access to it. They’re basically asking to save the info of everything you print to their servers and your printer will only be available for devices you allow access to your google print account (can’t be set up from chromebook anyway).
USB C ports - Okay admittedly I do like these ports, It serves as the charging port, so you can charge the computer on either side. You can also use it as a normal USB port so long as you find devices with the usb c tip BUT this means you need to buy an adapter if you want to use HDMI or a flash drive/other devices that use usb 2.0/3.0 ports
Speaker location - They’re on the bottom, so as long as you’re not covering them up, your audio should be pretty decent
Google Chrome - What I LOVED about using Chrome on actual laptops was that you could have several different user profiles under the same google email on your browser. I had 2. One for my personal multi fandom tumblr, and the other for my marrish tumblr accounts. That way I could just switch windows to change tumblr accounts. You can’t do that on Chromebook. You’d need to create different accounts for your log in screen… which… is it really worth creating new emails? (says the girl who creates a new email everytime she wants to get a new free trial) Now my only option is to use 3 different devices for different tumblr accounts (I just created a choices safe main blog so I can actually find choices posts without doing a ton of searching, so I need an extra layer now)
Microsoft Office/One Drive - Who’s that? We don’t like her apparently. Seriously. You can’t have microsoft office, because all downloads come from the play store. If you like the mobile version of Word, congrats! This system is a winner for you! If not, you can always use the online version on Outlook’s website if you use that. Don’t even THINK about trying to download the one drive app. Seriously, it doesn’t work on Chromebook. I’ve been trying to sign into it since I first bought this laptop. Only when I looked at the horrible reviews last week did I realize I’d NEVER be able to log into the app.
Also streaming - There’s this god awful sound that sometimes plays when streaming on the CBS website. It usually isn’t there, but I gave up on watching SWAT (sorry shemar and criminal minds, I still love you) because I never know if this’ll be the moment when that screeching will begin. It only happens on the CBS website though (while it’s hooked up to my tv)
Ooh speaking of hooking up to my tv - HDMI sucks. that’s all. I hate the border that surrounds the chromebook’s visual. And if you’re watching videos that already aren’t full screen? Good luck streaming comfortably.
Digital Textbook app used for UCF - Okay so we use Yuzu for digital textbooks at my uni and I can’t figure out how to get the app to let me in. Pretty sure that’s the app’s fault though. You have to sign in through a mobile browser to use the app, but the chromebook uses a full capacity desktop browser so I CANT log into the app. I have to use the online version if I take my chromebook to school with me instead of my actual tablet. So whether or not this is the chromebook’s fault is a bit iffy.
Here are some photos for proof if you need to see what you’d be signing up for!
Nobody can….
Instead of a “start” menu… we have a search menu. The top bar shows your most recently used apps.

As Sony is a media giant, it is no surprise that their latest handheld, the PEG-N710C, has support for playing digital audio. What is a surprise is that it has built-in support for the controversial MP3 format, which is the preferred format for music piracy. Sony would rather people use its ATRAC3 format which has copyright protection. The N710C comes with applications that can play both.
Sony handled this in an unusual way. The N710C comes with a version of its Palm Audio Player and desktop app combo that plays MP3s and a completely different set that plays ATRAC3 files. Neither can play the other format.
To store and play MP3s, all that is necessary besides the player is a regular Memory Stick like the one that comes with the N710C.
To store in ATRAC3, a MagicGate Memory Stick is required. Sony's MagicGate technology is intended to protect digital content. These are white, as opposed to regular Memory Sticks that are blue. Windows 2000 users beware, the ATRAC3 version of the desktop software requires FAT32 and won't work with NTFS.
How much music can be stored on a Memory Stick depends on both the size of the MemStick and the quality the file is saved in. At 132 kbps, a 128 MB MemStick can store 120 minutes of music. At 66 kbps, that jumps up to 240 minutes.
However, the 128 MB MemStick is only available in the MagicGate version and it costs a hefty $300. The largest regular one Sony offers is 64 MB for $140.
Of course, it doesn't matter how much music is stored if the battery is dead. Sony says that during audio playback with the screen off the battery should last about 11 hours but only 3 hours with the display on. They have added a convenient button to turn off the screen while playing music.

MP3 Overhyped and Over Priced!
The most overhyped feature of the Clie is its mp3 player functionality. Compared to standalone mp3 players, the clie costs significantly more due to the excessive price of its memory sticks. Sony must make most of its profits off of selling these sticks and sell its pda at a loss, similar to the razor/razor blade analogy. The maximum capacity of these sticks is only 128 mb at $299 with unwanted copyright protection built in whether you like it or not! I read an article about new Creative Labs mp3 players coming out this September which will offer 6-10GB of storage for, you guessed it, $299 and compact at 3' x 6'. Doing simple math, you get 46 times the amount of memory for the same price! Check the link below to read the full article.

RE: MP3 Overhyped and Over Priced!
Agreed. Not that I have anything against the N710C; I think it's a great step forward in PDA technology. The Memory Stick media is way too overpriced. I can't see myself dropping $500 on a PDA where I have to invest another $200 on data expansion just to listen to 4 hours of music. And if I want to use the PDA while listening, the battery won't last that long anyway.
I use a Sony Minidisc player when I travel myself. Although the transfer of .mp3s is a little more time consuming and the discs take up slightly more space, I'd much rather pay $12 for four hours of music media than $200.
RE: MP3 Overhyped and Over Priced!
Yup. I wouldn't assume that Sony is making a huge profit on these things though - often cost of chip production is a question of scale, and since the demand for Sony's memory stick is much smaller than the other formats, their production costs are probably much higher. This is just one more argument for standard memory expansion.
As you said, I'm not really excited about the new Clie because of the music capability (I use a Sharp MD myself) but I am excited about the audio capability in general. In the japanese version the Clie is rumored to come with software that lets you download video from your PC (i.e. TV programs) that you can view on the Clie. This would be impressive, though it sounds like it would drain the battery pretty fast. I like the idea of having that capability - it would be sort of fun. Though at $300 for 128 megs, it would be very expensive.
BTW the new Minidisc players/recorders can get 320 minutes of music on a standard disc using the new MDLP format - pretty damn cool! I just saw an MDLP recorder that only costs $250 from Minidisco.com, and I might have to buy it.. _________ Syncplicity. Redefining Simple. www.cognitiveroot.com
RE: MP3 Overhyped and Over Priced!
I heard a rumor that the audio capabilities of the new CLIE will NOT be accessible in programs other than the built in Audio Player application. If this is true that means that no games or other multimedia apps could take advantage of its improved sound. If this is true, it would really be poor and carelass implementation on Sony's part. Imagine playing a nice new game on a 320X320 color screen with the same bleeps and bloops for sound effects you could get on a Palm III..
Can anyone confirm or deny thir rumor?
RE: MP3 Overhyped and Over Priced!
That is true. Playing audio is trhrough headphones only. The speaker is more or less the standard PalmOS one (though louder).
RE: MP3 Overhyped and Over Priced!
>I heard a rumor that the audio capabilities of the new CLIE will NOT be accessible in programs >other than the built in Audio Player application.
STOP SPREADING FALSE RUMORS!!! Go read the review by the well-established PalmOS game developers Red Mercury, and you will see that there is an API to access the audio capabilities, and that they think this plus the high-res APIs will take gaming on the PalmOS to new levels.
Atrac vs Mp3
Sony has been pushing the ATRAC format since the introduction of the MiniDisc, (which is the format which they use). Without getting into details of which is better, I would almost think that now would be the time Sony would push this format bigtime with all the controlversal stuff going on with Mp3s and with Microsoft announcing that they want to try and rid the world of Mp3s with in the next several years. I would think that Sony could had a big push with these if they lowered the price on their memory stick which is used to store the ATRAC compressed files. To fork out another $300 bucks is alot of money after tossing in the $500 bucks for the PDA already. I'm sure they'll probably have smaller memory stick for less price, but I'm guess if 128 megs cost $299.00 than the 64 meg one probably will about half of that, which still is alot of money and anything smaller than 64 megs to store music just really isn't cutting it in less you are willing to take a loss of the quality of the file you are listening too.
RE: Atrac vs Mp3
CLIE Users Group Moderator @ 5/2/2001 12:59:22 PM #
While ATRAC is a well-developed algorithm for sound compression (Sony has spent a lot of time researching the psycho-acoustic properties of various compression schemes), MP3 is widespread and has now become the defacto standard for compression. Thanks primarily to the popularity of Napster and other avenues for music 'trading', the MP3 format is here to stay. It's too late to get MP3 back into Pandora's box, and even Sony now realizes this. To not offer MP3-playing while competitors have it would result in a marketing catastrophe for Sony, no matter ho good their PDA design is.
They will also soon realize that selling overpriced Memory Stick media will hurt them in the long run, now that much cheaper alternatives are available. Remove cold turkey.
It's always difficult for companies to accept that their formats are not accepted as 'standards', but Sony will have to adapt to the current market realities whether they like it or not. CLIE Users Group website:
Memory Stick is overprice when comparing with CF, MMC
Not only the memory stick is overprice when comparing with MP3 player on the market using MMC, harddisk or so.
CF card and MMC card costs less than half the price for the same capacity, up to 128MB.
Sony is making huge profit margin.
Looks like the MP3 feature of N710C is not attractive any more due to this.

RE: Memory Stick is overprice when comparing with CF, MMC
My source says SONY knows their prices are high compared to the market and are planning on reducing the price in the near future. Maybe the Clie sales will bring down the price given that MP3 is a selling feature.
There will be 128MB MS
Sony's own site for the new CLIE actuallys shows a 128MB purple Memory Stick. 'Available soon.' techtv states such a beast will cost a whopping $230. Ouch.
RE: There will be 128MB MS
ecost.com sells it for $151. Go check it out if you don't believe me.
Memory stick use..
Am i right in saying that one can defintely run programs off the memory stick. You don't need to first copy the program to the ram as in the case of the m505..
And you can store mp3's and whatever else you want on the stick?
Also, does anybody know whether it will be able to read data from other memory sticks such as a sony digital camera???
RE: Memory stick use..
CLIE Users Group Moderator @ 5/2/2001 1:15:32 PM #
In order to run programs directly from the Memory Stick, you would need PalmOS 4 and a program that was designed to take advantage of its new API.
To automatically 'read' programs without having to copy the entire program into RAM, you would need to install a program called MSMount, currently being beta tested by thousands of CLIE users around the world. This program works very well and will likely be formally released soon. Sony should purchase MSMount and include it as part of the standard software.
You can download the latest version of MSMount here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CLIE_Users_Group/files/MSMount%200.6.5.zip CLIE Users Group website:
RE: Memory stick use..
MSMount works with Sony's VFS which is compatible with the OS 4 VFS. Theoretically, if this is the way it accesses MS, then MSMount should also work on any device with VFS. As a matter of fact, TRGPro users who have the latest OS 3.5.2 with VFS, and who have tried out MSMount find that it works although with some problems as would be expected of a beta software. Therefore, the author of MSMount should probably rename his/her software to CardMount as it should also work for M50x which has VFS. The only problem with M50x is the speed of accessing the slower SD/MMC compared with CF or MS.
MSMount loads in parts of the program/database into RAM. It loads only the records that are required and hence needs less RAM than the actual file size. What this means in practical sense is the ability to store a dictionary/encyclopaedia that is greater than 8MB and stil be able to access it on the Clie/Handera etc.
BTW does anyone know how MS compares with CF in terms of speed of transfer of information?
https://compfox214.tumblr.com/post/653861859791880192/wrench-force-shock-pump-manual. Next, we counted the strokes needed to reach a specific pressure on the ShockWiz and noted the deviation on the pump gauge once we reached that pressure. This allowed us to compare the recorded pressure with the display on the pump itself, as well as measure the pressure equalisation when attaching the pump. We’re aware that a ShockWiz can’t replace high-precision laboratory equipment, but standard pump gauges can’t either.
Clie's audio player
anybody know where the Clie's audio player can be downloaded for trial?
RE: Clie's audio player
The audio player cannot be downloaded. It ships with the device itself.
RE: Clie's audio player
damn. if that's the case, maybe i can try beaming the program from the clie to my prism..now, i have to find a demo unit that's working..
RE: Clie's audio player
Hmmm .. I thought the audio player needs the headphone jack that the Clie has? Prism has no such sound hardware I believe.
RE: Clie's audio player
that's true, but it would be interesting to just see how the program works in another Palm Powered unit, yes? =)
RE: Clie's audio player
I have another Sony Clie with the audio device but no application. If you guys can send me the audio player, I really appreciate it. Please send me to: [email protected]
Thanks, Raj
Memory stick
The Audio playback is not a big thing for me. Since I own Sony DSC-P1. It's a big thing for me to be able to use the picture taken from my digicam and display it on clie. And it's better to buy 2 64's than 1 128 Memory stick.
RE: Memory stick
Same thing here.. I have a dsc-s50 and use a 64mb memory stick along with a 32mb. The biggest thing that could have stopped me from getting one was the MG memory stick and no mp3. I can do both along with let the models see the pics on one memory stick while I shoot more pics with the other memory stick with a different model..
RE: Memory stick
Attention, I live in Vancouver and couple days ago I Found that 64MB MS cost $200 and 128MB MS cost 380, So it's cheaper to buy 128MB.
New Clie
This unit has awful battery life. I'm not sure that it would last me a full day of use and music playback. Peace Out Alan
RE: New Clie
Try putting the CLIE in the 'Hold' mode when you are listening to the music! THat way, it will increase your battery life; take it out of the 'hold' mode when you have to lookup something.
MP3 Playback & Screen
I had several thoughts about the new color Clie: First of all, according to Sony's web site, a 64MB memory stick costs $140. For about $10 more (last time I checked on palmgear) you can get a 64MB MP3 springboadr module! The Sounds Good - I paid more for mine but I like it because it uses very little power from my Prism battery - I can listen for about 2 hours without draining the batteries more than 5% or so (as long as I leave the prism off..) plus - MULTITASKING
Games For Sony Clie
I can listen to music and read avantgo, play games .. on the sony you have to stay in the stupid MP3 app all the time you're listening :p Also, who cares about a 320*320 screen with only 8 bit color?? For text it would be very nice - but it could just as well be b&w The real advantage of a color screen is graphics - and don't let anyone tell you that 8 bit looks almost as good as 16 or 32. no way. Sony would need to either focus on a cool graphics/multimedia machine - maybe built in sound & MP3 hardware, and a 16 bit color screen - or make a good basic unit..
RE: MP3 Playback & Screen
What I am more interested is whether you can play a song (i.e. mp3) as an alarm ?
RE: MP3 Playback & Screen
Could not agree more! Have the soundsgood in my Visor Deluxe (Which is awsome, btw) and the total package costs 350, for 64mb of pure MP3 sound. Granted, not color, but I can multitask, and can spend my money on other stuff. Sony is playing a 'gotcha' game with this new device - Advertising it's MP3 capabilities, but charnging a massive price for memory - which the less-research concience people out there would not realize until too late! I wonder how much you could store on the included 8mb stick..if 64MB = 1 hour, then 1/8th of that would be..12 minutes..maybe 2.5 songs..bummer..
-M.Ross
RE: MP3 Playback & Screen
Regarding the multitasking comment, that is incorrect. I currently am using a 'localized' N700C. I am able to listen to music and perform other tasks - Avantgo (which I love), check schedule and addresses, etc.
As far as the 320X320 screen, fonts (particularly the medium size font) are finer, and in my opinion, easier on the eyes. I had a chance to live with both the Prism and N700C for a week before deciding to hand off the Prism to my father. Gfx file download.
I agree that the colors on the Prism are much more vibrant than on the N700C - I do miss that. However, I prefer the appearance of photos on the N700C over the Prism despite the color difference because of the finer pixels - my opinion. I can't knock the Prism screen - I still think it's the best Palm OS screen when viewed indoors. But, I'll take that compromise for the ability to view the N700C screen outdoors - came in handy today on the golf course to jot down a note.
At this point, not having seen an m505 in person, I think the Prism and N700C are the best color Palm OS devices today. Of course, the old IIIc is not so bad considering the now low-$200 price point.

RE: MP3 Playback & Screen
I forgot to mention battery life - under most office lighting conditions I am able to easily view the N700C screen with the backlight off. I've been able to go 5 days of heavy use (music, note taking, games, reading) by selectively switching off the backlight - can't do that with the Prism!

RE: MP3 Playback & Screen
Regarding 8bit color on the Clie.. From what I've been reading the device uses an 'adaptive palate' for displaying images. Even though the device is limited to 256 colors, it can display any 256 colors at a time. This means that the display will optimize itself for images/applications and, in most cases, will appear to have a higher color depth than 256.

RE: MP3 Playback & Screen
Sounds like I was wrong about multitasking: does anyone have experience with this? Is MP3 playback run by dedicated hardware vs the main processor?
RE: MP3 Playback & Screen
CLIE N700/N710 has a DSP for music playback, therefore multitasking is possible. Infact, I don't think one could play MP3s with old DragonBall VZ, even overclock it to 42MHz.
RE: MP3 Playback & Screen
What's the point of the Sony Clie being able to play MP3 as alarms? You can hardly hear anything from that tiny speaker. Maybe they should have thought of a real speaker that you can hear like on the TRGPro and HandEra 330.
Voice Recorder (MP3/Atrac) would help nullify naysayers
If Sony had included a built-in microphone and software that encoded to MP3 or Atrac, then there would be significantly fewer complaints.
It would be cool to be able to record a meeting in MP3 format. I'm sure other PDAs can do voice recording, but this functionality would legitimize the audio capabilities of the CLIE.
RE: Voice Recorder (MP3/Atrac) would help nullify naysayers
YEAH RIGHT. a 33 mhz processor can encode mp3's. how long would that take? 5 hours?
RE: Voice Recorder (MP3/Atrac) would help nullify naysayers
The CLIE already has an additional chip to allow it to DEcode MP3/ATRAC3 audio. Couldn't this handle the ENcoding?
RE: Voice Recorder (MP3/Atrac) would help nullify naysayers
The encoding process takes longer and is more complex than the decoding process -- so it is not as simple as use the same chip.

Backup Diablo 2 Save Files
Diablo 2 Saved Character Files
Here's how todupe an item without any hacking: ----------------------------------------------- Use Town portal. Set any item in front of the portal. Click with the mouse on the item and step through the portal. When you reach the town the item will be in your inventory. Go back through the portal and the item will be where you left it. To duplicate an item in multiplayer: Fill up your belt with healing or mana potions. Drop any item on the ground. Walk some distance away. Click back on the item. Your character will start walking toward the item. Just before the character picks it back up, click on a potion that you should have on your belt. If the item is picked up, you can then drop the potion. When the potion hits the ground it will change into the item that you pick up. If the potion doesn't change when it hits the ground, you clicked on it to late. Repeat 1 through 6, but try walking farther away from the item. It might take a few tries to get your timing down, but it will happen. Also, you can not have more than one of the same item on the ground at any one time. If you try, the screen will say 'duped item detected,' and it will remove one of them. Diablo 2 in a Window: --------------------- Although not documented, you may run Diablo 2 in a Window instead of full-screen. Simply add '-w' to your Diablo 2 shortcut. (ie: 'C:Diablo 2Diablo II.exe' -w) Retrieving Items from Dead Corpse: ---------------------------------- (Tested with version 1.01) When you die and are transported back into town, shutdown the game incorrectly (example: (Alt) + (Tab) back to Windows, press (Ctrl) + (Alt) + (Delete) and shutdown the Diablo 2 task). When you load the game back up again, your dead corpse will appear in town and you may collect your items/gold. Savings & Load: --------------- Unlike in Diablo I, you cannot save the game in the middle of a dungeon, and re-load the game back to that point. That is, if you pick up an unidentified magic item and want to save the game before you identify it, so that you can reload the game and dump the item if its actually cursed or useless, you cannot do it directly through the main game menu like you could in Diablo I. This is because your in-game menu options are various game setting 'Options', 'Save and Quit', and 'Return to Game'. To do this in Diablo I you would just: save, identify item, load game, and then dump the item if you wanted. To do this in Diablo II, you need to: save and quit, load game, identify item, Alt-Tab (to bring up your Windows desktop), end task Diablo II (ctrl-alt-del, select Diablo II, click on 'end task'), then relaunch the game, and reload the game. Your item now returns to an unidentified state, and you can unload (sell, drop) it if you want. Money: ------ This doesn't work for any class except the Barbarian. It definitely takes patience. OK, first learn the find potion skill. If u want to, after go to the skills shrine, then go around and kill everything, in between use the find potion skill and with the shrine enhancement u should be able to get light health and mana, and maybe even a rejuvenation. when your full go to the blacksmith and sell your potions. Presto, Mo money! Hex Cheat (Stash) ----------------- WARNING: Always make a backup of your savegame before edititng! To modify the amount of gold contained in your 'Stash', do the following: 1) Try to put at least 1000 gold in your stash. This cheat will work with smaller amounts, but you may be limited on how much you can add. 2) Load your game. Record the amount of gold in your stash. Exit from game. 3) Load a Hex Editor and convert your gold to HEX. Open the file savegame.d2s (savegame will be the name of your character) in your Diablo 2 save folder. 4) Search for the HEX location (from converted amount of gold). Modify the HEX location to FFFF (or any amount in HEX that you wish - up to 65000). Save the file. 5) Re-load your Diablo 2 savegame and you will have 65000 in your stash! Gain money and items quickly: ----------------------------- Travel past the Blood Moor and look for a cave. The cave has two levels, with a golden chest somewhere at the second level. Inside are usually health potions, mana potions, scrolls of town portal or identify, unidentified weapons and armor, and sometimes even a rare item that can be sold for a great deal of money. If you identify the item and it is something that you do not want, sell it. Save and exit the game. The next time the game is loaded, the chest will still be there with different items. This can be done as many times as needed. Cow level: ---------- When you have the Horadaric Cube, obtain 'Wert's Leg' in Tristram (where you go to rescue Deckhard Cain). Go to the northwest part of the town and search the boy's body. Place both Wert's leg and a Tome of Town Portal in the Horadaric Cube, and it will open a portal to a hidden level filled with axe carrying cows. Do not go through the portal until you are over level 35 because the cows are quite numerous and strong. Duplicating items: ------------------ Note: This only works on Open Battlenet, as the characters need to be saved on your computer. This trick also requires two computers with two copies of Diablo 2. Get the items to be duplicated. Copy the 'Save' folder from the Diablo 2 folder of that computer and paste it on your desktop. Go online with both computers and meet in a game. Give the items to be duplicated to the second computer, then save and exit. Press (Alt) + Tab) on the first computer to switch to Windows and copy the 'Save' folder from your desktop back to its original location, overwriting its current contents. Return and join the other computer in the game. You will now have all your original items and the other computer will have a copy of them. Note: This does not work with the +1 Skill book from Act 2, as you are only allowed to do it once. Can't get your Dead body?: -------------------------- Just save, exit and go back to the game. Your body will be in the town. Avoid no-win situation: ----------------------- Press (Esc) when facing imminent death, then save and exit the game. Load the game again to start in town, where you can buy weapons, life etc. Change enemies: --------------- If enemies in a certain area, such as Hell, are too tough restart the game. Enemies such as Flesh Spawners, Stygian Hags, and the Hell beetles can spawn dozens of creatures in seconds. After restarting, check the area and repeat if needed. The Hell beetles are usually replaced by Doom Knights and Venom Lords, and the Hags are usually replaced by the same. This may also work with other areas. Imbue without worry: -------------------- When you get an item and want to imbue and are worried about the outcome, copy the 'Save' folder from the Diablo 2 folder to the desktop or any other location. Start your game and imbue. If you do not like what happened, save the game and exit. You will now be in main menu again. Press (Alt) + (Tab) and copy the save folder back to its original location. Then click 'Single Player Game' and start. You have another chance to imbue the item. Repeat this until you get the desired effect. Unlimited one way portal: ------------------------- Cast a Town Portal from a safe location, then take the portal into town. Use the waypoint system and run to get back to your last location. This allows you to use the portal to go back into town an unlimited number of times as long as you do not use it from town to return to where you were previously. Using items in Act 1 for Necromancers: -------------------------------------- Because gems in the beginning of the game are usually more precious than any unique/rare item you may find, get a socketed bardiche and fill it with chipped or flawed rubies or sapphires. For boots and gloves, try to go for + to gold from enemies because gold in Act 1 will allow you to buy useful items in Act 2. For rings and amulets, lean towards + to life Mana or Attack ratings. For armor and helm, try to get the best defense. However if you find something that has kicking abilities, do not hesitate to sacrifice the few defense points in difference. For belts, the more slots the better. In skills, + to strength. In abilities, +2 raise skeleton, +1 to amp damage, +2 to clay golem, + 1-2 to bone armor. Unlimited imbued items: ----------------------- After installing v1.00, play until Charsi offers to imbue something for you. Save and exit the game. Then download patch v1.03 and install it. Join a TCP/IP or open Battle.net game with the same character. Imbue something, then give it to a trusted player. After exiting, return as the same character, and you will be able to imbue again. Note: v1.00 save files cannot be overwritten by v1.03. Hints: ------ Before selling an item, repair it. This will increase its value. Always have several Town of Portal spells ready. These portals can provide a quick escape if the dung hits the fan and there's no other way out. You can use the waypoints to move between the different acts. This is helpful if you want to go back and buy an item or get something repaired. Horadric Cube formulas: ----------------------- NOTE: These formulas will not work with patch 1.02 installed. The Horadric Cube, found in Act 2, works as a kind of magical catalyst. If you put certain items into the Cube, it will transform them into another item. Here are a few formulas that work: 2 quivers of Arrows = 1 quiver of Bolts 2 quivers of Bolts = 1 quiver of Arrows 1 quiver of Arrows + 1 Spear = 1 bundle of Javelins 3 Perfect Gems + Magical Item (armor, weapon, jewelry) = random high level item 2 Topaz + 1 Ring = 1 Coral Ring (lightning resistance) 3 Mana Potions + 3 Heal Potions = 1 Rejuvenation Potion 3 Gems of same grade and type = 1 higher-graded Gem of same type 3 Rings = 1 Amulet 3 Amulets = 1 Ring Recipes for the Horadric Cube: ------------------------------ Ingredients: Wirts Leg, Tome of Town Portal Result: Red Portal to Secret Cow Level Special Note: Must finish the game first and be in the Rogue encampment on the same level as when you finished Ingredients: Amulet, 1 Perfect Gem of each type except Skull Result: Prismatic Amulet - 18-24% Resist All Special Note: - Ingredients: 3 Perfect Gems: same type, 1 Magical Item Result: 1 Random Magical Item Special Note: Works with Magical Armor, Weapons or Jewelry Ingredients: 3 Gems: same type and quality Result: 1 Gem of next higher quality Special Note: 3 Perfect Gems will not transmute Ingredients: 1 Ring, 2 Topaz gems Result: 1 Coral Ring Special Note: Ring gives +21-30 lightning resistance; quality of gems and ring properties do not matter Ingredients: 1 Ring, 1 Sapphire, 4 Thawing potions Result: 1 Cobalt Ring Special Note: Ring gives +21-30 Cold resistance; Quality of gem and ring properties do not matter Ingredients: 1 Ring, 1 Ruby, 4 Exploding potions Result: 1 Garnet Ring Special Note: Ring gives +21-30 Fire resistance; Quality of gem and ring do not matter Ingredients: 1 Ring, 1 Emerald, 4 Antidote potions Result: 1 Viridian Ring Special Note: Ring gives +21-30 Poison resistance; Quality of gem and ring do not matter Ingredients: 3 Rings Result: 1 Amulet Special Note: - Ingredients: 3 Amulets Result: 1 Ring Special Note: - Ingredients: 3 Healing Potions, 3 Mana Potions, 1 Gem Result: 1 Full Rejuvenation Potion Special Note: Gem quality does not matter; quality of potions does not matter Ingredients: 6 Gems: any type or quality, 1 Sword Result: 1 Socketed Longsword Special Note: - Ingredients: 3 Healing Potions, 3 Mana Potions Result: 1 Rejuvenation Potion Special Note: Quality of potions does not matter Ingredients: 1 Healing Potion, 1 Strangling Gas Potion Result: 1 Antidote Potion Special Note: Quality of Healing Potion does not matter Ingredients: 1 Quiver of arrows, 1 Spear Result: 1 Set of Javelins Special Note: - Ingredients: 2 Quivers of Arrows Result: 1 Quiver of Bolts Special Note: - Ingredients: 2 Quivers of Bolts Result: 1 Quiver of Arrows Special Note: - Ingredients: 1 Dagger, 1 Axe, 1 Stack of Throwing Knives Result: 1 Stack of Throwing Axes Special Note: Axe/Dagger class and properties do not matter

Where Can I Get A Free Download Of Kindle For Macbook Pro 2017
Amazon Kindle Fire and typically an Android tablet are very similar. They do use a lot of the same code, however, there is just enough difference in both operating systems. Then how to actually transfer photos and videos from the Amazon Fire tablet over to your computer.
If you’ve taken numerous photos and videos on your Fire HD 8, or Fire HD 10 Tablet with Alexa, this Kindle tips can be helpful for you to transfer your files from Kindle Fire to your computer. Let’s go-ahead to the computer and get started.
But hey, this Amazon kindle software was free- sure glad I didn't buy a tablet and get stuck with a non-functioning product. UPDATE 2016 None of the older versions would run on the latest Mac OS so I tried to get a newer one. Searching for 'Kindle' got me Kindle for Windows and dozens of totally unrelated products but no Kindle for Mac. By the way, if you’re reading this and you think your MacBook Pro might be affected, you can find details about the free repair program on Apple’s site. Getting a refund for the fix for this MacBook problem. Like you, I find it incredibly frustrating to have a company make a promise and then renege. Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me with an issue I currently have with my mac book air? MacBook Air info:-Purchased new, late 2012-Processor: 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5-Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3-Storage Capacity: 120 GB-Storage Capacity Free/Left: 68 GB-Current OS X 10.9.5 (13F1911).
Before we get started we’re gonna need a couple of different items.
One thing is your Kindle Fire tablet that you have.
The other is the cable that comes with your tablet. Just because some third-party USB cables may not actually have the ability to transmit data.
Where are Photos stored on Kindle Fire?
Amazon’s Kindle Fire takes photos or shoot videos with its built-in camera. You can keep your photos and videos in the internal storage or microSD card of your Fire tablet, or store them in Amazon Cloud Drive.
The default location for the Amazon Kindle and photos is in the internal storage.
If you know clearly where the photos and videos are stored on your Fire tablet, things become easy for you to backup/transfer pictures or files onto your computer from your device.
How do I transfer Photos from Kindle Fire to Computer
Transfer files via Cloud Drive
If you’re buying all your apps, music, movies, and books on Amazon, Amazon automatically saves it in the “cloud” and you can simply login on your computer to Amazon and transfer everything that way. Of course, you can manually transfer photos that you’ve uploaded to Amazon Cloud Drive to your computer.
Go to the Amazon Cloud Drive and log in to the Amazon account associated with your Kindle Fire.
Click on the “Pictures” folder and then click the “Kindle Photos” folder.
Select the checkboxes of the pictures you want to download and click the “Download” button. Choose where you want to save the photos and click “Save.”
However, many people prefer to simply hook the Kindle Fire up to the computer. Not only you can transfer files from Kindle Fire this way, but you can also transfer files from your computer to the Kindle Fire easily, as well. You are simply going to need a USB cable that works with the Kindle Fire.
Transfer Files from Kindle Fire via USB
Step 1. Plug the USB cable into the Fire tablet
Once you’ve connected your Kindle Fire to the computer with the USB cable, you may get a little tone that indicates that it has connected. If you don’t, what you’ll need to do is to put in your passcode or your password for your Kindle Fire and that will allow you to finish the communication to the computer.
Step 2. Create a folder to store your photos
Go to the further step, create a folder that we’re going to use later to actually back up the files. You can put the file anywhere you want. If you have a specific location where you store your photos or if you use the default pictures folder of the computer.
Here I’m going to go ahead and put it right here on the desktop. To do that, we’re gonna right-click, hover down New and then left-click on Folder, and name the folder whatever you want. Once you have that, just go ahead and hit enter and it will finalize that edit. We’ll come back to this folder in just a few moments.
Step 3. Transfer pictures from Kindle Fire to PC
What we’re gonna do now is the bottom left hand of the screen, you’re gonna notice you may have a file explorer window, left-click on that and you’ll notice that the Fire device will show up under devices and drives. Double left-click on Fire, you may have two different locations for storage if you have microSD card in your Fire tablet. I use the default location for my Amazon Kindle and Photos. I don’t actually have a memory card plugged into it. But if you do, it will have an extra like memory card showing up right here to the right.
Double left-click on internal storage, and we’re gonna look for a file that says DCIM stands for Digital Camera Image.
Double left-click it and then double left-click Camera.
And then you’ll see the pictures in the folder.
Then, you can highlight by left-clicking and dragging, and that will select them allowing us to copy those over. Or you can hit Ctrl+A to select and backup all of those photos to the computer.
Navigate on the desktop and find out where we put that folder. If you look on the left of the desktop, you can find the Kindle backup folder you’ve just now created.
Then, drag the selected images to the Kindle backup folder, by holding left-click.
You may see a progress bar that comes across the screen.
Double check and make sure that those photos have actually backed up to the folder.

Recover Deleted Files from Kindle Fire
Have you ever accidentally deleted photos, videos, books on Kindle Fire HD? You can recover deleted files from Kindle Fire by with Amazon account or Kindle file recovery.

The Sims 1 struggles, Lou’s storyline, my snazzy hair and looking for Mark
@simper-fi replied to your post “I played the Goth family in the Sims 1”
As someone who continued playing TS1 long after TS2 came out, I can attest to the fact that it is HARD. I don't think I ever played a family without cheating their motives at least a few times. :P And yes, TS1 babies are awful and (especially after playing generations in TS2) it really bothers me that children can't grow up further in TS1. :\ Ah well, TS2 hits the sweet spot!
I recall playing TS1 for ages in late 00s when I was pretty young because at that time no one in my family had a laptop capable of playing TS2 and I spent most of my time building and editing community lots. I think I bulldozed everything in the vacation island and tried to rebuild everything. Funny thing though - I was around 9 at that time so my parents didn’t let me have Hot Date expansion pack because the name was very suggestive. This meant that I only had all of expansion packs except for Hot Date therefore I couldn’t fully experience staying in vacation hotels because the hotel desk only came with Hot Date so it was quite problematic. [EDIT: Bloody hell, my friend pointed it out and the hotel desks did come with On Holiday not Hot Date. I double checked and there’s no proof that they cane with Hot Date. I told myself a massive lie when I was a child and I believed in it for a decade... don’t ask me how!] (Mum, the woohoo bed came with Livin’ it up, eh?)
@sigmundsims replied to your post “I played the Goth family in the Sims 1”
Just curious, was it difficult to get TS1 to run on your computer? What OS do you have?
First time I installed it on Windows 10 - I was confused initially on why I’m stuck with first time neighbourhood loading on the loop then I realised I should have run as an administrator. To set TS1 up on your Windows 10, you need to turn on compatibility mode (Windows XP Service Pack 2) and always run it as an administrator because it allows the game to make changes in its directory in program files. That’s all you have to do. Also, it’s likely to crash if it’s run for a long period. I only experienced crashing and didn’t have any freezing issue in my gaming desktop. However, it didn’t crash at all on my laptop but I did experience frozen game several times after playing for too long. You need to save regularly otherwise you may lose hours of blood and sweat you poured into this game. :)

Ugh. Andrey. Never reproach a depressed person for being depressed! I'm beginning to see why she cheated on you.
@goblinalchemist replied to @penig‘s comment “A while later… The smell of cookies finally gets Lou up. She sits up...”
I'm just gonna point out that cheating can never be excused and I can't help but not feel sorry for her whatsoever.
I’m glad that I presented Lou, her depression and her relationship with Andrey well in the post that it brought up people with different opinions on her. It’s a messy story line and I'm sure you can expect it to worsen with time.

What is that interaction? I've never seen it.
Hi! It’s actually a business perk where you can have an interaction that enables you identify a shopper that’s most likely to be persuaded in bid to gain more loyalty stars. I find it pretty useful if you work as a salesperson. :D

The Worst Advices We’ve Heard For Rdp Computer | rdp computer
The Remote Desktop Protocol is also known as the RDP and is one of the most commonly used communication protocols in the world. It was created by Microsoft in the late 90s and was intended to be a way for people to connect to a remote server. These days, this protocol is used for a variety of different things including file sharing between two people, data sharing between people, and remote desktop services. We'll take a look at how this protocol works and how it can be used to improve your company.
RDP is actually a client-server protocol, meaning that it allows one computer to communicate with another over a network. This type of network is typically referred to as a Local Area Network (LAN), which refers to a group of computers located within a defined geographical area. A computer network can be separated by distances can be very small in some cases, such as when two computers are separated by a telephone line. However, in a LAN, all computers within that network share a common connection point, such as the Internet.
When you have an RDP computer, you can use it to connect to your computer over a local area network (LAN) in the same way that you would use the Internet. When you are working on a program on your computer, you will typically open a terminal window and then input the command “Remote Desktop” followed by the IP address of the remote server. From there, the server will open the Remote Desktop Protocol and your desktop will appear on the screen. You can use the Remote Desktop Protocol to control different parts of your desktop on your computer, such as your desktop background, the desktop icons, and the desktop icons of other users.
There are a variety of different applications that can be used over the Remote Desktop Protocol, ranging from games to remote control consoles. There are also many different types of software that are designed to be used over the Remote Desktop Protocol as well. Some of these applications can be used to help you perform tasks, like data sharing between computers, but some applications can also be used to provide access to certain applications and files.
RDP can be used as a tool for remote administration. You can connect to a remote server over the internet and use the Remote Desktop Protocol to remotely change files and programs on the server. You can also use RDP to remotely control other computers, allowing you to remotely login to these computers and do different things with the computers you are connected to. You can use the Remote Desktop Protocol to remotely control printers and scanners as well, but most of the remote access software that you find for this purpose is designed to be used with the Windows computers only.
Many different applications can be used over the Remote Desktop Protocol, which means that you can use this protocol to perform many different tasks. Some applications can be used to provide access to certain applications, while others can be used to share files with other users. Some people will use the Remote Desktop Protocol to connect to their computers on the Internet. Some applications also allow you to view your desktop through the Internet, allowing you to view files and data on your computer from anywhere in the world.

Practical Cyber Security Strategies for Businesses
Cybersecurity and cyberattacks are just as real as having a street mugger steal your wallet, or having another nation stealing your country’s technology. Businesses especially are a favorite target of cyberattacks, no matter the business type, size, or location. According to Buchanan Technologies Toronto, as long as your business is connected to the Internet, it is at risk of being hacked – with company information, technology, finances, and records at risk of being exposed to hostile hackers. Due to this, each business really needs to step up their cybersecurity game, with prevention being much easier and more efficient than trying to cure or recover from a cyberattack or intrusion.
Protecting Your Business
Here are a few high-level tips that you might want to follow to increase the security level of your business. Hardware The first part of vulnerability in any computer-based system is the hardware itself. Thus, securing your company’s hardware is of primary importance. With so much attention given to acquiring the newest and most sophisticated types of cyber security software, safeguarding the security of company hardware is actually often overlooked. Requiring all terminals and computers to have a complicated password is something that is very basic yet is usually not followed by many. Encourage your personnel to commit passwords to memory instead of writing it down or being easily accessed and broken by would-be hackers. In the same light, password-sharing should also be discouraged. Passwords should never be made known amongst different employees or departments, and actions such as asking staff members to temporarily log in guests, contractors and new hires should be closely watched and monitored. Having hardware physically locked down or anchored to the floor or tables is also a move which is very simple yet very effective against all forms of theft. This limits the ability of hackers and thieves from physically going off with your hardware and any data contained within them. There are also tracking software now available, with some being built-in to some operating systems, such as Apple’s “Find My iPhone”, and Android’s “Find My Device”. You can install and enable such software on all laptops, phones and tablets. By doing this, any stolen equipment can quickly be located by the authorities as long as they are connected to the Internet and powered on. Software The next level of cybersecurity deals with software access to your company’s information. Viruses, malware, and ransomware are just some of the types of software programs which cyberattackers use to invade a business’s computer infrastructure. Ransomware, which are programs which encrypt and lock in data, asking for payment in order to decrypt and give back access to information, is one of the most prevalent risks encountered in recent years. In order to combat this, using the trio of anti-virus, anti-malware, and firewall programs are needed in conjunction with each other. Each one focuses on a specific type of attack, as one type of defensive program would be weak against a specific attacker. An example of this is that existing anti-virus tools are not very effective against ransomware, which changes almost as quickly as new anti-virus tools are developed. Ransomware can work quietly in the background and only be detected by an anti-virus programs when it is too late to save your files. So, it is important to invest in software that has been specifically designed to deal with each type of challenge. Personnel More often than not, another usual source of weakness against cyberattacks come from a company’s employees themselves. Creating a security-focused and aware workplace is of utmost importance, as many employees are found to be the cause of data breaches due to their lack of understanding of their daily actions which could make their company vulnerable against hackers. Simply banning the use of personal devices in the workplace has always proved not to be effective as people find it difficult not to sneak a peek at their phones every now and then, or even use company computers for social media. It is therefore more impactful to teach staff how to use both their personal devices and work devices in a way that minimizes the risk of being hacked. They should be educated about the risks associated with using unsecured networks to access work information. Password security and responsible website use need to be ingrained as part of the work ethics of employees as well, in order to both take care of their own information as well as that of the company’s. Have a Plan B Lastly, all the prevention in the world sometimes isn’t enough to fight against an extremely determined cyberattacker who has a lot of resources behind them. In these rare cases, having backup plans are a company’s best option in order to continue operations freely. If the company’s data does fall into the wrong hands, making sure such data is encrypted would make it useless to any would-be hacker. Be sure to encrypt all sensitive data, including customer information, employee information and all business data. Full-disk encryption software is included in virtually all operating systems today and can encrypt all the data on a desktop or laptop computer when it’s at rest. Also make sure that such software is always activated and updated on all company devices. Besides encryption, the backing up of data is the last line of defense a company has. Even if a company’s physical hardware containing data is stolen, having such data encrypted and with up-to-date backups available for restoration anytime makes such a breach have just minimal impact to a company’s operations. Thus, always having a backup plan, and always staying one step ahead of cyberattackers are the best options available for any business to protect itself from online enemies. Read the full article

The android cemetery (Chapter 15)
The next morning Gavin Reed was one of the first to arrive at work. Him reporting in despite this being his day off earned the man a few moans, grunts and glares, which he savored. Some more curious glances got cast Evelyn Turner’s way, who was walking reluctantly at the detective’s hand.
With the words “Here’s a case solved for you, since you couldn’t do it on your own”, Gavin turned the child android over to Captain Anderson. The reply “And a kid is something you couldn’t manage on your own” was dancing on the tip of Hank’s tongue, but he felt that was a bit too low and saved it for some later time.
Hank focused on the little runaway. The girl was keeping close to Gavin, even trying to hide behind him. This Mister hadn’t been the friendliest in the world, but at least he was a familiar meanie, while everyone else here was a stranger. And strangers were never good news. Or were they? Mister Reed and Mister Danny had been strangers, too, but they had rescued Lyn from the big bad android in the landfill. So the child wasn’t sure about that anymore. Maybe mom and dad could explain the difference between benevolent and dangerous strangers to Lyn, although they were sure to scold the girl first, but she wasn’t even afraid of that anymore. Because it would be her mom and dad doing the yelling, not the intimidating officers around the child. Why police officers? Why did she have to come here?! Granted, Lyn had done something bad when she had ran away from home, but she was really, really sorry and would not do it again. All she wanted was to go home! So there Evelyn stood, confused and frightened and holding her big, yellow teddy bear in front of herself, pressing it tightly against her chest.
“Don’t let it get to you, there’s nothing going on in that skull”, Gavin commented the scene.
“Relative of yours, then?” Hank replied. He was about to open a file on his desktop, but hesitated. Hank gestured with a pen back and forth between the man and the girl when a realization struck him: “She does look a bit like you! But I’m on the android cases, so I assume she is…?”
“It’s an android, yes. A normal one for a change, neither a deviant, nor one made up of like fifteen others plus the local home improvement center’s contents and talking in Connor’s voice.“
“Nor a what speaking in WHAT? Seems as if you had an eventful night… Coffee?”
“Nah, coffee won’t do me any good now. I need something stronger.”
Something really strong, a shiny gulp of ethanolic oblivion served in a very small glass and followed by something more colorful in a large, broad glass with a slice of orange snapped to the rim – for health. But although he was technically off duty this was Gavin Reed’s workplace, so the drink would have to wait.
“We have decaffeinated green tea”, Connor, who had just finished watering the office’s plants, offered. “It helps with stress relief.”
“If taken regularly over the course of six weeks. Sorry, but Dean already tried that on me this morning.”
Gavin grabbed the android from behind his back and shoved her towards the desk.
“Can you take this off me now? That would go a long way towards my sanity.”
Rather forlorn Evelyn stood in front of the two men, looking up at the police captain behind his desk. Eventually the girl managed to speak: “I… I… I’m Evelyn. Turner. And I’m sorry! For running. Away.”
“Not really”, Gavin felt the need to correct. “It’s only simulated.”
Hank nodded thoughtfully. “But what does that mean for real, that it’s only simulated?” he asked. “Is it really input-output with no consciousness in-between or isn’t it more likely that this child can feel just like a human one, only she is forced to feel what her coders want her to in any given situation?” The captain looked from one co-worker to the other, but Gavin didn’t seem interested in an answer while Connor had trouble making sense of his own memories. There had been some choices, the deviant remembered. Nothing in its code had outright told Connor’s former machine-self to pick up the dying fish in the Phillips apartment, for example. But on the other hand nothing had prevented him from doing so. There had been the vague awareness of the act possibly contributing to making androids look good to the public, therefore very indirectly boosting future sales. The android certainly hadn’t felt pity for the creature, despite giving the impression. But it had felt something. Known it was there. There hadn’t been a void inside its head.
That much Connor told his father.
“I do not think I felt restricted or treated unfairly”, he mused. “Not before the day when program instability had progressed to the point of no return and I ran away with a live goldfish in a plastic bag.”
Up to this point Evelyn had followed the adults’ conversation rather lost. Now she could find herself in it. “I took Matȟó Ǧí with me when I ran away, Mister!” the girl announced. “I took good care of him and he of me, but then I almost lost him when the trash golem chased us, but Mister Danny caught him safe and sound!” Evelyn pointed at Connor. Breathing in in that exited little girl way she added: “And you totally sound like that monster, Mister, only I don’t think you are one!”
Hank stifled his laughter. “I take it you have made progress in your other… case?” he asked Gavin.
“Finished it. I’ll tell you the story if a squid & garlic pizza finds its way my way. And there’s still a lot of work waiting for us. Soon as Tina’s here we need surveillance down for a couple of minutes. And probably a distraction.”
Hank nodded. They would see to that, but first Evelyn had to be seen to. Hank grabbed the phone to call the Turners. While waiting for someone over there to take the call, the captain overheard with half an ear how Gavin asked Connor for pictures of something. The android took Gavin’s phone, briefly closed his eyes and transferred the asked-for images to the device. “It better not has deviance now”, Gavin grunted. But despite this they were both looking rather stricken at the photographs that were now cluttering up the gallery. “I didn’t remember him having looked that bad”, Gavin said in a low voice. “For some reason I always picture him with both eyes intact… the other one went back online on its own soon enough, but, yes, when we met it wasn’t there.” “Big deal”, Connor whispered. “For my part I didn’t remember how coldly I was able to tell someone “hey, look, you’ve survived against all expectations, tell you what, you had no information of use to me, I’m going to kill you for real now”.” Hank then understood that they were talking about Daniel and that the pictures were Connor’s memories of the deviant from when he had been stored in the archive. The decoy Gavin had procured would have to look exactly like the erstwhile captive, with little to no room for discrepancies.
Now Mrs. Turner answered the phone. She listened to what the police captain had to tell her, fell silent for a few seconds and then told Hank that the family had upgraded to a teendroid. “We named her Evelyn, too, and the woman at the CyberLife store helped us turn some of our videos into actual memories for the new android”, the mother explained. “It is as if Lyn had grown up! Also the new Evelyn helps a lot with the baby…”
Long story short, Hank understood, the child android was no longer wanted, was considered a burden, even. Returning Evelyn “home” would only end in her getting sent away again, perhaps to a CyberLife store to get reset and resold or even back the landfill, only this time for real.
“Would you like to donate the android to charity?” Hank asked Mrs. Turner. “For a childless couple that hasn’t the money for a fertility treatment or adopting, maybe?”
“Oh, yes, that’s a good idea! Thank you, officer.”
Hank ended the call, then waved Connor and Gavin back to his desk.
“Have you slept with Dean lately?” he asked the latter.
“Of all the things that aren’t your damn business…!”
“Oh, come on, in Brindleton Bay you were doing it all over the place! There’s, what? One sexually active deviant in the face of two hundred that don’t care? And of course it’s one of the two I am in contact with regularly… Just my luck. Whatever. I hope you did, because you are having a baby.”
“What?!”
Hank pointed to Evelyn.
“Her. But don’t worry, I’ll have her adopted out in a few days.”
“Strasbourg android museum again?”
“It might take some persuasion, since the Underground Airline’s policy isn’t too friendly towards non-deviants, but Connor should be able to talk them into it. Just keep Evelyn until then.”
Muttering that a seafood pizza wouldn’t be sufficient payment this time, Gavin nevertheless didn’t outright refuse the request. That would have been a stupid move with a boyfriend in danger and the Andersons being the best, maybe only, fellow conspirators in Detroit.
“Did you get that, tin can?” the man addressed Evelyn. “You’re going to stay with us for a handful of days.” He grabbed the android by the wrist and dragged her behind him towards the cafeteria. “Come, get a move on! There’s something you’ll need to learn.”
To everyone who had not overheard the conversation the scene looked very much like the Lieutenant having brought a relative to the station today. Already words to the effect of “bastard”, “one-night-stand” and “child support” started floating from desk to desk. In the cafeteria Evelyn got a quick introduction into the art of using the coffee machine from Mr. Reed. She was programmed to experience this either as a game or as being a big girl now, the exact notion probably being the result of a randomizing action triggered in her artificial brain. But in any case learning how make coffee distracted from the realization that the police captain had talked to what had sounded like Lyn’s mother, but she wasn’t coming over to fetch her little girl… So Evelyn wasn’t good enough for her parents, after all. She had failed to be a good girl and didn’t deserve a home. But maybe, if she did the coffee really, really well…? If she could do well in Mr. Reed’s eyes, then she could in anybody’s, right? Maybe…
Meanwhile Connor took his father aside.
“Why them?” he whispered. “We could care for the child short-term with no trouble. Heck, Sumo on his own would make a better foster-parent than these two!”
“Probably”, Hank agreed. “If he remembered back as far as the day when the breeder sold him to me.”
When Connor only shot him a puzzled look, Hank explained: “Would you agree that both Portia Colch and Amanda were demanding “parents”, like tiger moms? See? You nod! Even if you had denied it, I’d known it to be true. Because my parents were of that mettle, too. You and me could empathize with a child facing sky high expectations. Or with a gifted child, who’s piling those expectations upon themselves. What neither of us has lived through, however, is losing our home and family.” Slowly Connor nodded again. The hatred he had received upon first coming to the DPD had been equally bad, of course, but an altogether different experience. To lose a loving home you had to have one in the first place. Like Tina, when her father had hardened his heart against her after his wife had left him. Gavin twice, first when the family had lost their home and a few years later again, while his parents had been in prison. And Daniel when John had ordered a new android including front door delivery and disposal of the old device. Granted, the PL600’s family had not exactly been loving towards their android, but he had delusionally experienced them as such, so for all practical purposes it was the same.
“They know and she knows and if things turn out a certain way, we may not even need to persuade the rest of the Underground Airline that Evelyn deserves to get rescued”, Hank said. “And you better not make me into a fucking grandfather too soon!” he added.
