Another slow day, so I'll just share these girls since they had a little trip to the dolly spa this morning. Ah, Liv Dolls.... I wish I loved them more than I do. Always thought they had a cool concept, but the execution never quite hit for me. Once again I only ended up with a representative sample of two in my collection (this will become a recurring theme XD). We've got Alexis from the first wave in 2009, wearing a later fashion pack and wig; and Katie as the Mad Hatter, from the Target-exclusive Alice in Wonderland line released in 2011. Including a 'Sassy' Swappin' Styles Fashionistas Barbie, also from 2011, as it's very possible I purchased her and Katie at the same time, for the aesthetic ;p I used to display these two with my small collection of Ever After High dolls; the proliferation of tiny useless hats in the doll space during the early 2010s amused me greatly.
No promises, but if all goes to plan tomorrow I may break out the Mysticats. Stay tuned.

ARMY NOTES -In order from left to right: Hobi, P-Dogg , Yoongi (?), Deepflow, Namjoon, and Hitman Bang. -As Namjoon explains in the tweet, the rapper, Deepflow is the head of Vismajor. Namjoon has actually known Deepflow since 2009 as the two crossed paths mulitple times (Namjoon auditioned for Deepflow's former crew, Big Deal Squad in 2009. Deepflow performed with DaeNamHyup, Namjoon's underground crew, in 2011. and Deepflow was also a judge at the Hit-It Auditions in 2011). At the time the photo in Namjoon's tweet was taken ,Vismajor was an underground rap crew (VMC). However, in 2014, it became a full-fledged hip-hop label with most of the original crew members of VMC signed as solo artists.

No pain, no gain.

i wasn't suggesting YOU were bitching you're just kind of the patient zero for this topic on tumblr rn so i figured it'd be easiest to just send my thoughts on the matter to the same place. also was making the point w/ hollowheads that alan doesn't tend to dictate canon relationships or identity in general, nd their whole dynamic being undetermined was just a secondary example. sorry for the confusion. i mention my worry about ppl bitching about it because some rando in the tags is already calling people p*dophiles for so much as questioning the authenticity of alan's comment
Ah, ok gotcha
I definitely don’t think people should take this as 100% confirmed Cannon. More like, take it with a grain of salt. If you wanna go with the idea they might be 10 to 12 go for it, but because it was such an on spot answer it doesn’t really confirm anything (which again I really shouldn’t have said confirm on that post, that is on me) don’t attack people for it
I don’t think people should be accused of being pedophiles for still headcanoning their sticks much older, cause again it’s not solid evidence, and someone pointed out they said “Creation Age”. Which is basically the year the CG first debut to now (2011-2023).

Ive been away from the phandom for about 7 years and im back lol im keeping up with all the news and im seeing a lot has changed! Is the vday thing still a taboo topic?
ah welcome back!! :)
yeah? sort of? from what i've observed i don't really see people bring it up/reference its contents a whole lot. frankly i see people bring it up way less now than i did in 2015/2016. i'm assuming it's mainly due to the fact that with d&p coming out it was confirmation that it's real. so for me personally at least it feels a bit icky to talk about its contents in depth bc like it's like a known invasion of their privacy if that makes sense? but i've def seen people mention it in the sense of "d&p were outed in 2011/2012 by this thing happening"

OOOH YAY I LOVE THIS SHIT
Answers below the cut 💖
•First Living Dead Doll?
13th anniversary Posey, followed by 13th anniversary Sin! I got them when I was 10 so they're pretty roughed up now lmao.
•How did you first learn of LDDS?
It's honestly like a scene from a movie or book. I was in a comic book/old toys store with my dad and brother off the side of the road. I don't remember exactly how old I was but series 21 came out around that time so I'm guessing it was around 2011 or 2012. Hanging under the counter were some LDD minis! I fixated on squeak and BEGGED my dad to have her. He said no and I put her back but when we got back to the car i googled her on my dad's Ipad. The best I can describe the feeling I had when first seeing the full squeak doll is literally falling in love. They became one of my longest held special interests throughout my late childhood and teens and I still love them so much. I'm so delighted to have discovered them.
•Favorite LDD you own?
Ahhh don't make me choose!!! It's a hard split but I'm gonna have to pick Either Squeak or Butcher Boop from the main like. Toy soldier from the exclusives. Either Posey or Eggzorcist form the 20th anniversary set. And Res jack the ripper or Res Lizzie from my resurrection dolls. I seriously can't choose! I love so many of them!!
•Your dream LDD?
Resurrection Frozen Charlotte or Fairy Fae. They're both wonderful in their own ways but those two call to me specifically.
•Which LDD did you pay the most for?
Ah fuck I don't remember... I think it was my resurrection Jack the Ripper Doll which was a bit over 155 usd.
•Which LDD did you pay the least for?
Cause I was a kid when they were being sold and got them in store- probably my 13th Posey and Sin.
•Is there a doll you ended up liking a lot more than you initially thought you would?
My interest in certain dolls has waned and waxed over the years, but my attachment to Butcher Boop was a little more surprising tbh. She's just so cute!!
•Is there a LDD you regret getting?
Nope! I like a VAST majority of the dolls so I'm happy to get them- I am however disappointed at the state of my Morgana. She's lost bits of her clothes and it makes me sad :(
•Do you own a rare LDD or one that has shot up in price?
Butcher Boop- though a LOT of the dolls have shot up as of late.
•Do you pair up any dolls in your mind? (Shipping or otherwise)
Omg so many! But out of my personal collection I do put my ships together. Currently I have: Hook x Thump Gluttony x Greed Ava x Roxie Judas x Jacob Res! Jack the Ripper x Res! Lizzie Borden Carotte x Maitre And Squeak x Pumpkin if I'm counting my minis Though I have far, far more ships :P
•Do you display them in box or out of box?
Out of the box- I prefer to show off accessories!
•If you buy them second hand do they have to come with the box, death certificate, and accessories? Or are you fine with just the doll?
Accessories are a must- I could maybe do without the death certificate and chipboard but I prefer to have them too. Box isn't needed.
•Own any in bad condition? Have any that came second hand that you had to fix up?
Right now I have 2 dolls and 1 blind box figure that are super fucked up. As I mentioned before My 13th anniversary Sin and Posey were obtained when I was little so they're in rough shape. My blind box bloody Eggzorcist is super fucked up because her flocking got stripped and she got stains. I plan to paint over areas of damage on her and paint on new blood spots eventually. I might even re-flock over her damage. My Morgana has a broken dress (One of her flowers fell off to god knows where.) and missing hairties. Thump Is missing a button, Hook's hook broke after the took a tumble form the shelf, though I have since fixed it and painted over the break. My Evangeline also lost her hairtie but I've kept her bow glued to a regular hairtie. Other dolls are stained or otherwise discolored but I can't fix that so I'm living with it.
•How many LDDs do you own?
I have 47 regular dolls, 2 minis, 14 blind box figures, the resurrection 10 card sets and pin set, the sweet tooth pin, the series 34 pin, and an eggzorcist plushie! I plan on more.
•Opinion on the ‘Presents’ dolls?
I like them! I just wish they weren't the only dolls besides the huge expensive ones being put out right now.
•Do you have any characters you’d like to see as a LDD one day?
Since I'm currently obsessed with 'House of Wax' (2005) then definitely the Sinclairs. I also hope to see a Candyman doll or inspired one! Dementia would be cool to see as a full doll too!
•Opinion on the new LDDS that can bend their arms and legs?
Cool! But very expensive and don't seem my style for collecting. I am excited for Posey though ngl.
•Which doll(s) would you like to see get a resurrection?
I'd KILL for a resurrection Vincent Vaude, Macumba, or Hook. Seriously WHERE is res Macumba??? The rest of series 4 is already done! I'm also surprised Eggy doesn't technically have a res doll yet.
•Least favorite LDD you’ve seen?
Milu... girl they fucked you up SO BAD. Especially her color variant it's so fucking ugly.
•Have you seen LDDs for sale irl?
Yes! Mostly when I was younger but my friends have taken pics of dolls they see on sale near them!
•Is there a doll that is generally unpopular that you love? Is there a popular doll you don’t get the hype for?
Frozen Charlotte is cute but overrated. A lot of other dolls are cute in the same way she is and they all deserve love.
•Are you good at remembering their names without looking at the chipboards/etc?
Yeah I remember pretty well! At least all the dolls I own.
•Do you make up lore for them? Or do you not think of that kinda stuff/are fine with their poems being their only ‘lore’?
I have such horribly convoluted lore for them you have no idea lmao.
•Do you take pictures of them?
Yes! Nothing professional but pictures when they're clean and I find something cute to pose them with!
•What do the people around you irl think of them?
People tend to think they're gross/dislike them. I don't really care they're my children.
•Have you ever taken one or more with you in public?
Oh yes- mostly Butcher Boop cause I have a cosplay of her but my 20th anniversary Eggy for an art project once!
•How long have you been in the fandom?
Since 2010-2012. I was too young to remember exact dates.
•What other dolls do you collect along with them?
Porcelain dolls! I also used to collect mh and Eah dolls but don't anymore. LDDs Are the only ones I actively collect.
•When did you last buy a LDD?
Christmas 2023! Though I plan to get some this Christmas or my birthday.
•Do you notice any common themes in the LDDS you collect? (For example maybe you collect mostly the boy dolls or ones that are more on the goth side)
Though I do gear a bit towards boy dolls, I also gear towards the cheaper dolls lmao.
•Is there anything you’d change about LDDS if you could? Is there anything you wish the people behind LDDS would do differently?
Lots of things, but these are problems I have with horror as a genre so it's no surprise. Mainly I feel racism and ableism in the dolls (Lack of dark dolls and black dolls, slurs both ableist and racist as doll names, and generally feeding into tropes about mental illness) are huge issues within the designs that need to be addressed more fairly in future series.
•Do you urself dress alternatively? (Asking this because LDDs tend to attract the goth crowd 🦇)
Nah, but I would like some more alt-y clothes in general cause they look cool as hell.
I’m bored so here’s a list of questions for Living Dead Dolls collectors bc there’s not too much LDD content on here 🥲 (you don’t have to answer all of these!! Just answer whatever you want!)

Oh my god, I’m digging through old files on my backup harddrive and I found this dream from 2011 in which me, @antialiasis, and a baby dragon are on the run from The King of Everything.  It is absolutely batshit and I love it:
Okay, so for some reason I was hanging out with Dragonfree.  What the hell, subconscious?  Why do you always stick my online acquaintances into my dreams?  (I think it’s a side effect of that time in my life where all I had were online friends and the fanfic forum was pretty much my entire life, even though that was like 6 years ago.)  But at least this time it sort of makes sense—I’ve been working on an off on the Ouen dragons piece a lot lately, adding little touches here and there when I’m bored, so people often ask me what it is, so I frequently launch into explanations of, “Oh hey there’s this writer with a cool fanfic, and I’m doing fanart of it.”  “Hey what’s it about?”  “Well, it’s kind of hard to explain the plot because it’s basically an awesome reworking of silly ideas from when she was 12.” “ROFL THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOU.” “Erm….yeah.  -_-“
Okay then, random tangent aside I was hanging out with Dragonfree I guess.  No explanation given.  At least my dream self wanted an explanation, though never actually got one.  I was at my home house instead of my school house which makes slightly more sense (If I were European I’d sooner visit the US East coast/NY area than the friggin Midwest.)
Kay, I swear the plot was awesomely detailed and amazing but now it is starting to sound really silly and I’m not sure why I’m writing it down. Dangit.  It started out like...pretty mediocre at my house (or what was supposed to be my house but looked nothing like it, what.)  I think there was some subplot involving something going wrong with her website (some of the layouts weren’t working which was apparently a sign of someone currently stealing things from it?  What??? Also one of the styles was really cool and best described as a matrix Articuno.  YES.)  I dunno. And then there was a hilarious part where my sister walked though the kitchen into the computer room and said something like “When did Beth get here?”  And I’m like “Wtf, that’s not Beth.”  But then I walked into the room and it was. (So now Beth was somehow at my house too?  How did all these people get here?)  Dragonfree was in fact back in the kitchen on the computer that was for some reason there (no, not my laptop…a random desktop in the kitchen), and Beth did not appear for the entire rest of the dream. *shrug*  Though amusingly at this point I wondered, “Hey since this isn’t the internet, should I call you Dragonfree or by your real name?”  but never actually asked it.  So I went the whole dream without addressing her by any name (not as weird as it sounds—I don’t use people’s names often.)
But all of this random crap quickly derailed into something involving DRAGONS HOLY CRAP.  Okay, so I actually can’t remember how the dragons plotline started dang.  I think there were like, different types of dragons (one for each element?  This was completely unrelated to Pokémon, however. In fact, I don’t think anything Pokémon ever came up, other than that random bit about her site.  I don’t have Pokémon dreams often.  What the hell, subconscious.)  I think we had the earth dragon or something except I guess it was a baby.  And then like, the queen of the world ordered the dragons (she had a lot of them I think) to kill people, except each dragon’s power was only effective on certain people, and the Earth dragon was supposed to kill us.  I think I ran and hid in a bush (yeah…because that would save me from the elemental dragon…) but since the Earth dragon was just a baby its power didn’t kill us (and I was confused about why the other dragons’ attacks didn’t hurt because I didn’t know about the whole only-effective-on-certain-people thing).  So then I emerged from my hiding place and I think a lot of time had gone by because I saw the events in a slow, limited-animation cutscene type thing (hey…sorta like that game concept art my group’s been planning.)  Well the earth dragon was now an adult.  I met up with Dragonfree at some sort of dessert table where a servant was putting together sweets for the king.  Things like chocolate covered pretzels and bananas. I guess I felt like trolling the king or something, so I stole one of the chocolate bananas, and then we ended up having the guards sent after us (yeah, way to go dream self.)  We hopped on a train (like an old style steam engine) except it was rather small, and intended for little kids.  Well lo and behold my youngest sister was there.  We rode on the train for a bit until my sister climbed on top to check something and was doing it all very not-carefully like someone who has totally climbed on top of a train and started opening hatches a hundred times in their life.  Well something went wrong and then she fell off and got tangled in some vines and then the train tried to go through an insanely small tunnel and started shrinking, so we had to get off.  And then we found the earth dragon!  Except he was a baby again OKAY THEN.
(Thus far there hasn’t been much dialogue only because I can’t remember it.  Everyone was actually talking a lot more than this implies. They weren’t all just standing there.) Also I think I spent most of the dream wondering when Dragonfree was going to go back home.  Because “oh yeah we’re on adventure and running for our lives, but hey please don’t leave in the middle of all this I wanna hang out some more.” Uh huh.  This makes even less sense when you consider that there are no countries and the king of everything is after us.
Well this time the queen was there with the guards so we ran away into this sort of maze of stairs vaguely like a kids’ play area except kind of more serious business.  Some of the stairs were in fact escalators that were broken down, and others were so small that we had to slide down then and we were doing pretty good at avoiding the guards.  We all regrouped and figured out a way onto the third floor, at which point we were feeling pretty clever, but then WE RAN INTO THE QUEEN OH SNAP.  But she was actually on our side the whole time! I think this made more sense in the dream (maybe she knew the earth dragon wouldn’t kill us with its attack? But what about all the people killed by the king’s fire dragon?)  Well she did something to the stair area to prevent the guards from getting through while she made a deal with us.  So then we had the queen with us, yay?
We were now heading up a mountain!  I have no idea what we were looking for at the top.  Except first we had to go though some sort of summer-camp type area, where they made us go though inspection (okay?)  This involved pushing us under streams of water which I thought were going to be freezing but were actually kind of warm.  Kay then.  During the next part we were all in a building (at the camp I guess) and a bunch of the campers were watching tv. At this point I thought to myself “Hey it’s weird how this dream is still continuing even though I’m awake.” WHAT?  So I thought this part was real, but I was still dreaming it…even though it was real?  Now, there have been times I’ve been able to continue a dream while awake and have it actually fit in the dream, as opposed to the lame crap you usually try to add to a dream shortly after awakening until you realize “wait my logic works now and this is stupid.”  But anyways…I think around this point was I finally going to ask Dragonfree, “Hey we’ve been running all over a crazy kingdom all day and I’m still not sure what to call you since this isn’t the internet and all.”  But at that point I woke up.  Well…damn.  I mean, it’s better than when you have a dream end at a super-suspenseful point (since we were kind of just wasting time at a camp and I don’t even think the earth dragon was with us anymore).  But still I felt the need to go run and grab my laptop and start writing all this down and highly confusing my roommates in the process.
And holy crap LOOK HOW MUCH I WROTE IN HALF AN HOUR.  Why can’t I write my fic this fast?

Hey, you don't need to reply to this, but I just wanted to see how you were doing, given the recent news.
Long post I guess because I started typing and couldn't shut the fuck up I guess.
TL;DR Honestly, I'm sad, and I'm tired, and I'm frustrated.
I've been a fan of RoosterTeeth since my friend Mark put me on to RvB in like... 2005? I've been a fan of AH since Michael's Impossible Game RageQuit in... 2011??? RT First was the first subscription service I've ever paid for- before my PS+, before fucking anything- the second I got my credit card in 2013. I've been a RWBY fan from when the Red Trailer first aired at the end of RvB season 10 in 2012. I've been a RT/AH fan for most of my fucking life
I've referred to Kdin as "fugz" because I just thought that was her screenname at the time. Finding out what that name meant to her at the time genuinely makes me want to vomit.
I'm still processing. Shit is still coming out. The fan is still being assaulted, let alone hit.
I remember getting into RT almost two decades ago because they were just a small indie company making silly videogame videos and they genuinely felt like a family. And I know that's fucking silly to think but I was in middle school and impressionable and that was genuinely the image that they put to the public, so why wouldn't I want to believe it? I remember watching RT expand and grow and the RvB crew get even bigger and not just being voices making Halo characters move anymore but faces playing games together. I remember Gavin, Michael and Ray get involved. I donated for LazerTeam. I've watched hundreds of streams. I've watched probably thousands of hours of RT/AH content in my life.
I thought the stuff Micah spoke about would be the worsts things got, but now we're getting everything Kdin's talking about and it's so fucking upsetting and disheartening. And I'm glad she still thinks the CRWBY are good people but like... at this point does it even matter?
I've known RT/AH have been circling the drain for a while now. It's been really fucking obvious to me at least, and I'm p sure I've made a bunch of comments about it over the years. Everything I love about RT has been in a downward spiral. Michael hasn't done RageQuit in years. Gavin and Michael don't do PlayPals anymore. RvB had two abysmal seasons back to back, gen:LOCK season 2 was such an obvious attempt to put a bad taste in everyone's mouth so we'd stop talking about the show so they could cancel it without anyone missing it. RWBY shot the goodwill it'd gathered for having a solid 2 seasons in 6 and 7 (after having an absolutely garbage seasons 4 and 5) in the back of the head with Penny and Ironwood's entire characterization. I'm not at all excited about this stupid JL/RWBY crossover, and I don't think it's gonna make enough money or new RWBY fans to even break even, let alone make much of a profit. WB just dissolved fucking Cartoon Network Studios there's no fucking shot RT survive this.
As far as RWBY goes... I don't know. And at this point, I'm finding it hard to care. RWBY's been one of my favorite shows for a really long time but I kinda just wanna tear away from it so I don't have to deal with the pain of it eventually getting cancelled. I think over 90% of my current friend groups I've made because of RT/AH content. Some of my best and oldest friends I've met because or RWBY or RvB or what have you. I'm glad after all this time I finally got to go to an RTX and meet my friends and cosplay and enjoy myself. But right now... kinda wishing I wasn't an RT fan. Kinda wanting to cancel my First subscription. Kinda wanting to just be done with RWBY and everything else.
Idk, maybe I'll rebrand as a BNHA blog I guess

«¿No estás transmitiendo aquí?», preguntó.

Really fucking tired of The Lennon Estate continously giving ANY sort of promotion to Arthur Janov and his theories. Literally the first few days of pride month and these are posted. It’s stupid and irresponsible to 'promote’ Primal Scream Therapy. Here’s a few references to Arthur Janov and his approach to homosexuality over the years (happy fucking pride). And just a note: All of this is just a fraction of why Janov doesn’t deserve half the credit he’s given for taking Freud’s theories and pushing them through a fucked up blender. If Primal Scream is your thing, don’t message me, I’ve read enough and don’t want to argue on a bug blog.  -
“Critical of the decision of the American Psychological Association in 1973 to remove homosexuality as a neurosis in its Diagnostic Statistic Manual, Janov called the decision a "disservice to homosexuals. It tells them that they are well when they are wracked with Pain and tension." [The Primal Institute Newsletter, October, 1979, p. 4]” - The Origins of Homosexuality: Insights From The Deep Feeling Psychotherapies by John A. Speyrer
“There are those who think I have taken an anti homosexual stance. So let me clarify. I have no “stance” about homosexuality. I only try to follow the science and not shy away from facts that are politically incorrect. That helps no one, especially those who want to change ...  We don’t advertise and make outrageous claims about homosexuality or anything else. We have “cured” some homosexuality. We didn’t start out to cure anything but two or three of them came to me after some time in therapy and said, “My orientation has changed.” I said fine. If it makes them happy so much the better ...  I really don’t care if homosexuals think they are normal. That is their choice. I do not agree or disagree.” On Becoming Homosexual. Is it Becoming? by  Arthur Janov, 2009
“If the mother fights with her husband all along her pregnancy she doesn’t have to wonder why her child is an addict or homosexual. Science now seems to say that fighting parents, an unhappy carrying mother can produce both, addiction and/or homosexuality. She is changing not only her own hormones but that of her offspring.” My Dear Poor Talented Amy Winehouse by Arthur Janov, 2011 (this is mentioned many times on his blog)
“... So no, homosexuality is not a normal part of sexuality. Not because I say so out of some prejudice, but because science leads me there. And if we give into pressure and agree that it is not a deviation, as the American Psychological Association voted on some years ago, we do harm to those homosexuals who cannot understand the way they are. Imagine voting on sexuality as if it were a political issue to be for or against. Next we will vote on psychosis to see if it is a real deviation. If we ignore deep-lying causes we will never find out. If we ignore brain and biochemical research we will also never find out. We need to delve deep into the system to discover ultimate causes. If we never truly define normalcy, how can we decide what is not normal? So if homosexuality is normal it cannot ever be treated and changed? I have found that not to be true. A few of my homosexual patients do change after many many months of therapy and very deep probing into the brain and the unconscious ...  If patients could be helped back into their remote history we would see the pain involved into homosexuality, and then we could add to it copious research extant that indicates that it may well begin with trauma in the womb and at birth. If we don’t look there how can we ever find out. Ah I know: replace it all with prejudice, or in the case of the scientific societies guess and bit and then take a liberal position that it is not “bad” after all but normal. We have just overlooked our decades of therapeutic experience and several hundred research studies. Why? Because we want to be loved and not be prejudiced, which is what it does make us. We don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. Is that science espoused by august scientific societies? Or is the search for love and praise for being so “democratic.” Sometimes science is fascist; it doesn’t care about our feelings and where their findings lead. It cares about truth. So it should say that sometimes psychotherapy for homosexuality might be good; and that it might be a deviation, after all. Keep an open mind, and above all never vote on matters of science. That is truly ridiculous.”  On Homosexuality as a Normal Variant of Human Sexuality by Arthur Janov, 2012
“So why am I not gay?  I had all the elements for it happening.  A psychotic/anxious mother and tyrannical unloving father.  But when I was sexually vulnerable at age thirteen, I was in the back of a car necking with a girl whose name I have preserved in memory. Those hugs and kisses sank in and changed everything." So Why Are You Gay? by Arthur Janov, 2014
“Is homosexuality genetic? We have successfully treated it, which makes the assumption that it is a disease.  Let me clarify:  in every neurosis there is a detour or a dysfunction of certain biologic and neurologic elements.” What Is More Important Genes or Epigenes? by Arthur Janov, 2015
“Janov's message has always had something of a messianic tone to it, straying off the path of what's socially acceptable in psychiatric circles. Janov declared in a 1971 interview, for instance, that he could fix everything from alcoholism and menstrual cramps to "homosexuality." It's a position he does not refute when I ask him about it in an email, claiming that "we have done it" in "restricted circumstances," before writing, oddly, that "I assume you are gay but do not pay attention to the hyperbole." How Primal Scream Therapy Has Survived Five Decades of Strangeness and Controversy by Oliver Hotham, 2016
Clearly his position on homosexuality has remained much the same over the years, he still seems to maintain his belief in many outdated and disproven theories and believes it can be treated.

Flightline: 70 - McDonnell Douglas/BAe AV-8B Harrier II
The AV-8A was operated by the USMC beginning in 1971, but the Marines quickly found that the Harrier was less powerful than hoped, only capable (with a standar takeoff, no less) of carrying a smaller payload than an A-4 over a shorter range. In 1973, a joint US/UK team began work on a project to develop a new Harrier, powered by a redesigned Pegasus 15 engine. This aircraft, dubbed the AV-16, would have double the AV-8A’s range and payload, and would replace the Harrier GR.1/3 in RAF service and the AV-8A and A-4 Skyhawk in USMC roles. The UK pulled out of the project in 1975, owing to rising costs and decreased defense spending, and the US, unwilling to foot the costs alone, canceled the program. McDonnell Douglas and Hawker Siddeley continued work on upgrading the Harrier, and in 1976 began modifying two AV-8As with new wings, revised intakes and nozzles, and other aerodynamic changes. These mules were designated YAV-8B.

The results showed greater than expected drag, but positive test results in other areas, including payload, range, and V/STOL performance, led to the award of a development contract in 1979. In 1981 BAe (formed by the nationalization and merger of British Aircraft Corporation, Hawker Siddeley Aviation, Hawker Siddeley Dynamics and Scottish Aviation) rejoined the program in 1981, enticed by the more affordable path McDonnell Douglas was forging. The MoU stipulated a 60/40 split between the US and UK companies, with airframe production taking place at McDonnell Douglas’ facilities in suburban St. Louis, Missouri, and BAe’s Kingston and Dunsfold facilities, and engine production split 75/25 between Rolls-Royce (which had previously absorbed Bristol Siddeley) and P&W.

The AV-8B Harrier II was extensively redesigned from the AV-8A, with the forward fuselage extended and the cockpit raised by ten inches, providing better pilot visibility. To compensate for these changes, the rear fuselage was lengthened by a foot and a half, and a taller tail, based on that used on the Sea Harrier, was fitted. The biggest change was the new supercritical wing, which was larger than the one used on previous models (the outriggers on the AV-8B are in the same place as on the AV-8A/GR.1/3, giving a sense of scale), and had a higher aspect ratio and decreased sweep. The new wing also had leading edge extensions, all of which grants the Harrier II a 6,700lb increase in payload with a 1,000' takeoff roll. The AV-8B was the first combat aircraft to feature carbon fiber composites in its construction, with the wing and forward fuselage being almost exclusively carbon/epoxy construction, leading to the Harrier II being almost five hundred pounds lighter than if it had been constructed from metals alone.

The AV-8B completed operational evaluation (OPEVAL) in 1985, and entered service with the USMC starting with USMC squadron VMA-331 (“Bumblebees”). In 1990 Marine Harrier IIs were deployed to the Persian Gulf on the amphibious assault ships USS Nassau and Tarawa as part of Operation DESERT SHIELD, flying training and support sorties. Despite plans to hold the AV-8B in reserve during the initial phases of DESERT STORM, Harriers were pressed into service on 17 January in response to a call for close air support from an USMC OV-10 Bronco against Iraqi artillery positions. The next day, AV-8s began strike missions against Iraqi targets in southern Kuwait. During Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM, 86 AV-8Bs amassed 3,380 flights and about 4,100 flight hours, with a mission availability rate of over 90 percent. Five AV-8Bs were lost to enemy surface-to-air missiles, and two USMC pilots were killed. After the end of the war, Norman Schwarzkopf included the AV-8 along with the F-117 and AH-64 in his list of weapons that played crucial roles in the campaign. Marine Harriers remained in the Gulf region during Operation SOUTHERN WATCH from 1992 to 2003, operating from ‘phibs in the Gulf and from forward operating bases such as Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait. Marine Corps Harrier IIs were later flown during Operation ALLIED FORCE over Yugoslavia, ENDURING FREEDOM in Afghanistan, and the 2003 Iraq war.

Two major variants of the AV-8B were produced: the Night Attack Harrier and the Harrier II Plus. First fielded in 1991, the Night Attack Harrier featured a FLIR camera on the nose cone, a wide-angle HUD, provisions for NVGs and a digital moving map. The Night Attack Harriers are powered by a Pegasus 11-61 (aka the F402-RR-408), which produce 23,000lbf of thrust. The Harrier II+ is also powered by the -408, and is fitted with a APG-65 multi-mode pulse-Doppler radar, taken from early model F/A-18s during their own upgrades to APG-73 radar. This allowed Harrier II+ to carry AIM-120 AMRAAM, as well as AGM-65 Maverick and AGM-84 Harpoon missiles, though the angle-rate bombing system was removed. Upgraded AV-8Bs are also capable of carrying a LITENING targeting pod, allowing the employment of PGMs.

The Italian Navy ordered two TAV-8B trainers, followed by a further order of 16 AV-8B+ to operated from the carriers Andrea Doria and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Italian Harriers were part of the nation’s commitment to the NATO campaign over Kosovo, dropping conventional and LGBs. An additional 7 aircraft were ordered in the early 200s to serve on the new carrier Cavour, with existing aircraft also upgraded to carry AIM-120s and JDAM guided bombs. Italy has ordered a force of 15 F-35B Lightning IIs to replace its Harriers.

Already an operator of AV-8A Matadors, the Spanish Navy was the first international operator of the AV-8B Harrier II, ordering 12 of its own variants, known as the VA-2 Matador II. The Matadors operated from Príncipe de Asturias beginning in 1989. In 1993, an additional eight VA-2+ (the equivalent of the AV-8B+) were ordered, along with a TAV-8B trainer. In 2000, Boeing (which had absorbed McDonnell Douglas) signed a contract to upgrade a number of early model VA-2s (the number varies from 2-11) to Harrier Plus standards, allowing them to carry AIM-120 missiles. Due to budget constraints, only five of the original Matador IIs were upgraded. The Matadors were part of Spain’s commitment to Operation DENY FLIGHT, enforcing the UN’s no-fly zone over Bosnia and Herzegovina. After the Asturias was decommissioned in 2013, the Matador IIs operate from the amphibious assault ship Juan Carlos I. Spain was interested in replacing the VA-2s with F-35Bs, but has instead settled on extending the Matador’s service life, citing the cost of replacements.

The first RAF Harrier II, known as the GR.5, entered service in 1987, replacing earlier GR.1 and GR.3 variants. The GR.5 differed from the AV-8B in that it had stainless steel leading edges to meet RAF bird-strike requirements, as well as in avionics and weapons. The RAF’s GR.5s were considered too immature a system to be deployed for the 1991 Gulf War, though several were dispatched to patrol the no-fly zones in 1993. Beginning in 1990 BAe began testing an upgraded Harrier II GR.7, which was broadly similar to the Night Attack AV-8B. After a successful test program 34 GR.7 were delivered through 1991, with the existing GR.5s upgraded beginning the same year. The GR.7s, hastily modified with GPS navigation, were deployed with NATO forced to the former Yugoslavia, and carried out recon and strike missions, often dropping LGBs on targets designated by SEPECAT Jaguars. Later, GR.7s were part of the UK’s commitment to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Beginning in the middle 2000s, BAe began development of the GR.9 upgrade, which would improve communications, ground proximity warning and navigation systems, followed by the integration of the AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missile. The GR.9 upgrade also included replacement of fatigued airframe components. GR.9s were deployed to Afghanistan in 2007, allowing aged GR.7s to be withdrawn. The stresses of war and advancing age of the fleet caused the wholesale retirement of the RAF’s Harrier IIs in 2011, with their tasks being assigned to Tornado GR.4s until delivery of the F-35B Lightning.

curious as to your take on the current debate going on in hamiltonia re: hamilton a slaver vs hamilton not a slaver?
Whew, this is going to be a long answer. Since Jessie Serfilippi’s “As Odious and Immoral A Thing” was first published (I posted a few brief quotes here), likely as part of an ongoing interest in the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site with the subject of the Schuyler and Hamilton families and slavery (see here for blogposts labeled ‘slavery’ including a couple about AH specifically), there have been three versions of a rebuttal by Michael E. Newton and some people calling themselves Philo (”Love”) Hamilton, one of whom is Doug Hamilton*. The ongoing engagement on this topic also brings up issues of historiography and hagiography.
In this whole discussion there is only one new piece of evidence that Serfilippi has referenced on Twitter but is not part of her article - I’ll get into that below. Everything else is a re-analysis of known and fairly popular sources, so I don’t think going through it point by point would be helpful.
But let’s be clear about something. This discussion around AH is in large part because of this Chernow falsehood: “[f]ew, if any, other founding fathers opposed slavery more consistently or toiled harder to eradicate it than Hamilton.” Chernow also calls AH a “fierce abolitionist” and a “staunch abolitionist” because Chernow doesn’t know what abolitionism is. This lie got tons of mileage with Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose musical character AH may have personal moral defects, but not blind spots as huge and disastrous to a modern audience as a lackadaisical approach to the owning of other human beings. (That Miranda’s approach totally riled some Black artists and scholars is well-known, and I wrote briefly about it here.) Serfilippi’s article doesn’t get the media play it does without the popularity of the abolitionist Founding Father myth that Miranda put on stage. So this conflict and news-cycle interest arose from Chernow’s need to give AH the moral high ground by claiming that he was the best best best abolitionist because Chernow is interested in hagiography, not biography. Unfortunately, Newton-Hamilton seem interested in the same thing.
A brief note on word usage: an enslaver, in most current usage, is defined as someone who participated in any aspect of the slavery enterprise. Considering AH’s undisputed role as money-handler (or the more laughable ‘he was a banker’ assertion in the Newton-Hamilton essay) for members of the Schuyler family acquiring enslaved persons, AH was an enslaver.
In my opinion, on the issue of slavery, AH is damned by his extensive ties from 1780 onwards to the Schuyler family. There’s nothing that can explain away the fact that AH at times lived with, visited, and sent his wife and children for extended stays and to be educated by his slave-owning in-laws. AH did not somehow become innocently involved in slave trading and ownership. Rather, he knew what he was doing when he married into the heavy slave-trading and owning Schuyler family and when he engaged in business acts for that family, including helping them to acquire/sell enslaved persons. These were morally weighty - and abominable acts, argued even in his day - and he did them anyway. There is not any record that remains that he had a problem having his children reared within an abhorrent system/household where people were enslaved and served them; in fact, given the number of times he sent his children to his father- and mother-in-law’s home for extended periods, it could be suggested he found nothing morally objectionable going on there. Philip Hamilton even thanked his enslaver grandfather for his advice on how to “be a good man.” P. Schuyler’s wealth and trading was through the slavery economy. Moreover, AH’s economic concerns were also inextricably tied to slavery - keep in mind that every mention of tariffs on sugar is connected to the slave trade. Almost everything led back to that evil institution.
During AH’s lifetime, a number of white AND Black persons articulated that all enslaved Black and Indigenous persons should be freed, that the practice of enslavement was a grave moral failing. AH was well-informed enough to know that Black Americans were articulating how freedom should be applied to them - indeed, many of the manumission policies of the original states arose from these efforts. So AH was fully aware of the arguments. (His son was involved!) Maybe this helped inspire him and his slave-owning friends and political colleagues to form the NY Society for Promoting the Manumission of Slaves, although none of this group agreed to give up their own enslaved persons as part of the organization of this group.
Or, as Newton-Hamilton audaciously state, “[AH] was more involved in building a nation” sotto voce based on enslavement and racial distinction than he could be bothered to care about the lives of enslaved people. This shouldn’t be a surprise when it comes to AH’s major moral failings/blind spots - he didn’t care about the lives of the people affected by his whiskey tax either. If one wants to nevertheless call this a “good man,” we’re probably looking at each other from across a void.
But this is well-trod territory. Several articles post-Chernow have evaluated and summarized positions on AH and slavery that I share:
“Hamilton's position on slavery is more complex than his biographers' suggest. Hamilton was not an advocate of slavery, but when the issue of slavery came into conflict with his personal ambitions, his belief in property rights, or his belief of what would promote America's interests, Hamilton chose those goals over opposing slavery. In the instances where Hamilton supported granting freedom to blacks, his primary motive was based more on practical concerns rather than an ideological view of slavery as immoral. Hamilton's decisions show that his desire for the abolition of slavery was not his priority.” Michelle DuRoss, “Somewhere in Between: Alexander Hamilton and Slavery,” Early American Review, 2011 [part 1, part 2]
“But it does illustrate something that his primary modern biographers have been reluctant to concede: Hamilton routinely subordinated his antislavery inclinations to other family and political concerns, and he did not ever approach even a modest level of engagement on the issue in his otherwise voluminous published works.” Phil Magness, “Alexander Hamilton’s Exaggerated Abolitionism,” 2015
“He was not an abolitionist...[h]e bought and sold slaves for his in-laws, and opposing slavery was never at the forefront of his agenda.” Annette Gordon-Reed, “Correcting ‘Hamilton’,” Harvard Gazette, 2016.
Serfilippi extends this:
When those sources are fully considered, a rarely acknowledged truth becomes inescapably apparent: not only did Alexander Hamilton enslave people, but his involvement in the institution of slavery was essential to his identity, both personally and professionally.
I have no objection to her statement. We simply have no record of AH strongly challenging the institution of slavery, while several of his colleagues and friends most certainly did. Instead, we have the financial transactions, the possible use of enslaved labor, and the possible ownership of enslaved persons, alongside his strong personal, professional, and political ties to owners of enslaved persons. And the new evidence: the inclusion of the following in a list of persons dead of Yellow Fever in NYC 1798, “Hamilton Alexander, major-general, the black man of, 26 Broadway” An Account of the Malignant Fever, Lately Prevalent in the City of New-York, 1799. We cannot know if this was an enslaved man or a free Black man who lived and labored for the Hamiltons, but it should eliminate anyone confidently stating that the Hamiltons did not own enslaved persons.
Thus, Serfilippi has successfully accomplished at least one important goal: bringing to the forefront the names (as we have them) of persons, servant or enslaved, connected to the Hamiltons.
I wrote above that part of the problem here is hagiography. If his concern is with the truth, I certainly look forward to Newton’s chapter-by-chapter repudiations of books written by Chernow, Brookhiser, and Knott on AH and the AH/GW relationship. This leads to the second issue that has arisen: the unprofessional, and frankly gross, glee in trying to punch down on a young female scholar. In my own field (an ex-partner is a military historian so I’ll speak for their field too), the approach when one believes a colleague is publishing in error and one has additional information that could illuminate the issues is to contact them and seek to work together to analyze and draw conclusions. Newton and the anonymous Love Hamilton clan didn’t treat Serfilippi as if she were deserving of this respect. Moreover, Newton has never, to my knowledge - and I purchased his books! - gone this hard after Chernow, who certainly deserves it even more.
But Newton-Hamilton betray their own concerns here: “Considering the era in which Hamilton lived, the challenges he faced, and his accomplishments, it is not difficult to understand why Hamilton did not make opposition to slavery his primary focus. His attention was on building a nation.” And what kind of nation was that? At the Constitutional Convention, AH’s lengthy speeches on the formation of the government have been recorded. There is no record of him offering any statements about the slavery issue, unlike his friend Gouverneur Morris.
Newton-Hamilton continue: “Unfortunately, that meant neglecting other important matters, not just slavery but also his own financial well-being.” Wow, a comparison is made between AH’s personal finances and the ownership of human beings. Could these authors be any clearer that the slavery issue is an inconvenience that they are ultimately unconcerned about? I’m unsure if Newton-Hamilton realize just how gross their attempt at addressing this issue has been, and that it’s hard to take their interpretation and analysis of the evidence seriously when these are the kinds of statements making their way into the rebuttal essays.
Now there is an interesting discussion about how even later abolitionists did not see a conflict in the employment of enslaved labor, but that too isn’t something that Newton-Hamilton show interest in. Instead, their approach seems to be that AH needs to be celebrated at all costs, and thankfully, those days are passing into history.
*It’s ridiculous that a group of people have given themselves a stupid pseudonym to avoid attaching their actual names to a so-called scholarly article. And I’m aware that I’m writing this anonymously, but on tumblr where maybe 5 people have made it to the end of this (I’m not publishing it on my real blog).
**I will not link it, but it can be found on Newton’s blog discoveringhamilton.
