@noshirdalal it is unexpectedly hard for me to draw a deer that doesn’t look like a very unwell horse. I used yours as a reference, it was definitely better than mine XD

I just finished watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. I thought it was fantastic, though I have one☝️ complaint...
It is CRIMINAL that the Gaang never addressed/discovered Appas fear of fire. 😤
Poor Appa was sold to a fire nation circus where he was abused and whipped with fire and forced to preform which made him scared of fire. Azula even ADDRESSES THIS FEAR. "Ah, afraid of fire now, are we?" SO ITS A LEGIT FORMED FEAR. BUT ITS NEVER BROUGHT UP OR DISCOVERED BY THE GAANG?? EVEN THOUGH SUKI WAS THERE AND WOULD KNOW ABOUT HIS FEAR TOO???
How a sky bison gonna fight the fire nation IF HE'S SCARED OF FIRE? They TOTALLY should have addressed that. it could have been a bonding moment between Toph, Aang and Appa and everything!😭😭😭😭
HOW SWEET WOULD IT HAVE BEEN IF THE GAANG FIGURED OUT WHAT HE'S BEEN THROUGH BY THE BURN SCARS ON HIS PAWS, THE HOLES IN HIS BACK/SHOULDERS/HEAD/FACE, THE WEIGHT HE LOST AND THE STRAINED MUSCLES AND HAD A WHOLE EPISODE PAMPERING APPA AND TENDING TO HIS INGURIES?? 😭😭
Especially since at this point he'd been missing for like 4 weeks by this point?? Making an episode where everyone has a special reunion moment with Appa and showing the Gaang helping Appa physically and mentally recover from EVERYTHING he's been through would have been the best. 😔😔😔 Would have been my favorite episode by FAR.
I would LOVE to draw a comic about this myself but that would be a TON of work and research to make sure I write everyone's characters correctly and have the timeline of events all line upppp... and I could write it but the truth is I'm a lousy fic writer and I don't think it would come out the way I wanttttt 😩😩😩
Hopefully I can find a fix-it fic for this particular issue or the post war comics will surprise me with its Appa content 👀👀👀

The Guru
Happy 2024 everyone and welcome to the first time I managed to type 2024 without first typing 2023! Oh and also a write up of The Guru. That too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me too Iroh. Me too.
So Zuko is riding high on that post-crisis 'time to get my life together' buzz that, similar to 3 am life plans, should absolutely not be listened to. Wonder how long before he crashes and burns? There's literally 2 episodes left, so I'm guessing one and a half?
Poor Sokka. My boy's got anxiety.
I don't know if it's a monk thing, an airbender thing, an Avatar thing, or an Aang thing, but I envy his complete lack of nerves.
How is Appa ok with them splitting up for a week after JUST getting them back?
Tumblr media
I paused in a funny place. Have bonk-eyed Appa.
Tumblr media
I love them comparing heights. What do you want to bet that that guy on the right was one of the youngest allowed to go fight, and Sokka made a big deal about how they're almost the same age and surely that means he can go too, right?
A lot of these Southern Water Tribe people have dreads or braids. That's neat.
Bato's arm is still messed up. That's some good continuity.
Tumblr media
I've found the source of Katara's cheek bones. I guess Sokka takes after his mum.
Tumblr media
Ok I know this is a really emotional moment (and it is! Sokka's spent two seasons earning this!) but my brain fixated on the furs and briefly thought they were sky bison pelts.
Tumblr media
"It's been a difficult week for me." This guy thinks the Kyoshi Warriors are there to provide him therapy. Someone please just crown the bear instead.
He just gave away literally every relevant plot point AND outlined how to make sure all these plot points don't succeed. Crown. The. Bear.
Maybe if these generals spent less time playing with their giant model Earth Kingdom and more time general-ing, the war wouldn't suck so much?
Tumblr media
Pretty.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the designs, the colour palette, the music, the sound design of this air temple. I love everything about it. If I had the chance to live anywhere in the Avatar universe, it would be here. Even in its ruined state it's such a refreshing contrast to the claustrophobia of Ba Sing Se. I can feel the freshness of the breeze through the screen.
"A spiritual brother of your people" an adult perspective on a near extinct culture! What a resource!
"and a personal friend of Monk Gyatso" an old as balls perspective. He's got to be at least 130.
Anthropology cul de sac time: this guy is so valuable as a resource on the Air Nomads. There's probably parts of Air Nomad culture that Aang can't ever accurately talk about, because he was a kid when he left, and there was almost certainly stuff that the adults kept to themselves, or only shared with the older Air Nomads. This Guru doesn't seem to be an Air Nomad himself, but there's a good chance that there is knowledge that he has, that Aang doesn't. Aang should be nerding out more about this. I'll do the nerding out for him.
Aang just breezes right by that Gyatso name drop like it's nothing. Huh.
Oh hey Toph. I'd forgotten she was in a box. Tweedle dum and Tweedle dumber really are quite the pair. What's their plan for keeping her fed and watered? Actually, these guys apparently don't know that maps exist, so it's probably never occurred to them that humans need sustenance. They'll rock up to the Bei Fong estate with corpse Toph and wonder why they aren't getting the reward money.
Tumblr media
Mai gets called out in-universe for shopping at Hot Topic.
Ty Lee's buttering up of Azula is getting less and less subtle as the season progresses. It's a testament to Azula's lack of awareness that she's hasn't noticed that, and that Ty Lee can get away with it.
Azula's right that it's an extraordinary opportunity. The King gave them quite literally every piece of info required to overthrow his kingdom in a 25 second conversation. I can't blame her for taking advantage of such an easy win.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's a very effective unimpressed face. And a very impressive beard.
It's funny to see a spiritual concept from the real world pop up in a show that includes things like bending and giant fish possession. The mention of Chakras kind of sticks out. They couldn't invent a Avatar universe version?
"Once you begin this process, you cannot stop until all seven are open." Well that doesn't feel like foreshadowing at all.
This episode should be called "Aang's self-care Journey." It's about time the kid had a me day that wasn't avoidance-based.
Fear: Losing Katara - makes sense. Losing control of his powers via fish possession - makes sense. The Fire Lord - makes sense. But the Blue Spirit? He helped. Doesn't make sense.
Guilt: Running away - makes sense, although I thought he'd worked through that with Katara in the storm. Nuking that idiot General's base - makes sense, but boy did he quite literally ask for it.
This guru is saying some wonderfully accurate, and realistic, things. I love that he's not taking the Katara route of denying anything is wrong. He's going for the acknowledge, then heal route. And yes, it's unfair of me to compare the emotional maturity of Katara to a century+ old spiritual expert.
I'm going to ruin the immersion here and point out that Sokka's dad's voice actor voiced a bunch of characters in season 1. He's doing an excellent job, but couldn't they get a unique voice for a character that's so important (albeit offscreen) to Sokka?
Tumblr media
That's an incredibly roundabout way of avoiding pointing out that the Southern Water Tribe are active participants in a bloody war. Sure, we can show multiple characters with visible scarring from horrific burns, but heaven forbid we imply that the Southern Water Tribe sinks ships. The parameters for what is and isn't appropriate on this show sometimes make no sense.
"Aren't you listening? I said the rest of you men get ready for battle." He hasn't seen his boy in two years, but fifteen minutes in his company and he knows exactly what needs to be said and how. That's some top tier parenting. Dad of the year. Dad of the century. Only decent Dad in this show that isn't technically an uncle.
"Follow your passion Zuko, and life will reward you." Great advice for your eight year old audience. Also a great way to end up unemployed.
Tumblr media
Positive Sokka creeped me out a few episodes ago. Now positive Zuko is freaking me out too.
Tumblr media
Pretty.
Back to Chakras! Shame: Burning Katara - makes sense. But that's it? To have the inner peace of mind of a twelve year old who's somehow only ever done one thing that he's ashamed of.
Is there anyone in the earth kingdom who isn't stupid? Once again wondering at the network's standards. Visible burn injuries are fine, but Mai can't say 'Shut up." It's got to be Shush up. Although I do seem to recall of brief time in the early 2000s when Shut Up was treated as a curse on par with Shit or Fuck. Maybe that was just at my school.
Chakras again! Even for a show that often has an A, B, and C plot, this narrative is ping ponging around a bit much.
Tumblr media
Grief: nothing major, just a whole nation. Makes a horrific amount of sense. but I don't buy that he can get over grieving the whole world as he knew it by thinking about his crush. That's way too high a pedestal for Katara to be placed on.
Lies: Not accepting he's the Avatar. Interesting that not accepting that he's the Avatar and not accepting that he's a firebender are two different problems.
Tumblr media
I see you reusing the opening credits footage. Your blue filters can't fool me.
Tumblr media
PRETTY
Illusion: So we're relearning what we learned in The Swamp. Aang's probably the person currently alive least likely to believe in the rigid separation of the nations anyway. This doesn't feel like an illusion he's subject to?
Tumblr media
The way this episode dances between its narrative threads is so great. It's all woven in so beautifully. And this makes perfect sense! Toph's spent her life secretly doing things excellently that everyone says are completely beyond her capabilities. Life has taught her that the statement "you are not able to" doesn't apply. Of course immutable laws of bending physics are treated with the same respect as an adult telling the champion of the Earth Rumble that she's can't earthbend beyond breathing exercises. If you told her that humans can't fly, she'd figure out how within the week.
Tumblr media
Plot collision incoming.
Interesting that Katara initially recognises Zuko by his voice rather than his scar.
I'm pretty sure that Zuko and Iroh don't know about the whole brainwashing thing, but wouldn't it be hilarious if Zuko introduced himself to Katara as Joo Dee, and his uncle Joo Dee, welcome to the Jasmine Dragon, can I take your order? That would throw Katara into one hell of a moral quandary.
Katara being framed as the solution for Chakra number four comes back to bite Aang, as she's the problem in Chakra number seven. I knew that pedestal was too high.
Tumblr media
I've changed my mind. This episode should actually be called "Half a dozen reasons why everyone should just learn to keep their goddamn mouths shut already."
So is anyone going to let Zuko and Iroh know that they're now in immediate danger and need to leave, like, yesterday?
I think the Guru is going for the whole 'if you love them, let them go, and they'll come back to you' thing. Don't cling, in other words. But for the sake of the plot he's suddenly lost his ability to explain Chakras in a way that makes them seem like the logical thing to do. The only clunky bit of this episode so far.
Tumblr media
May I introduce you to our Lord and Saviour Toph?
"I am the greatest earthbender in the world." Yes. Yep. Yeah. That's now a quantifiable fact, and it's correct. Look on ye mighty and despair. She's even got Bumi beat.
Earth Tongue Running is a bit wonky looking but it covers a crazy amount of distance.
What's the range on Toph's earth sense? Can she sense what direction Ba Sing Se is?
I hope those two idiots' horse bird is ok.
"You don't know how much this means to me dad." He does. Very much so.
Tumblr media
Every word out of this guy's mouth is precision engineered to make Sokka feel like a million bucks and I for one think it's about time someone built him up. Also, seeing this makes me realise how few good parents there are in this show. It's a trope of kids' adventure shows that the parents fundamentally can't be there, but I also think it's a commentary on yet another thing that this war has messed up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey look! Being a man is knowing where you're needed the most, and right now that's in Ba Sing Se, protecting your sister! I love narratives that tie their themes up with a pretty bow on top.
Tumblr media
This is Azula laying a trap, right? Which means that Katara squealed to someone about the exact location of Iroh and Zuko's tea shop. Don't like the implications of that.
Tumblr media
Photos taken seconds before disaster.
Final Thoughts
This episode was a lot! I mean that in a good way! But I felt a bit like the Maxell Blown Away Guy, the way I kept getting assaulted by yet another plot thread. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a criticism. I think the switching between plot threads and the amount of info in this episode worked 99% of the time. But I'm kind of in awe at the balancing act the writers pulled off and I'm sort of sitting here blinking a bit trying to fit all this stuff in my head. I'm probably going to forget half the stuff I wanted to talk about in this write up, so here goes nothing.
Given the Azula reveal in at the end of last episode, I thought that this would be the episode where the shit hits the fan. I was wrong. I'm glad I was wrong. An episode of set up is required and is nice breathing room, even an episode as busy as this. And I got to leave Ba Sing Se! But this does mean that next episode is going to be calamity after calamity.
Aang and his Chakras: I'm fascinated by this guru. I hope he comes back. That brings the total number of people who were alive before the war started up to three: Aang, Bumi, Guru Patik.
I'm impressed that the run through of the Chakras rarely felt like an info dump. The onion and banana juice thing didn't work for me, but I'm sure it worked for people in the target age bracket. Kids love burp jokes.
So many shows sprinkle in tragic backstories for flavour and then never have them influence the character in the present. It was a nice contrast to see a show take a whole episode to tell Aang "yeah all that sucked. It's ok to feel down about it. Here's how you move forward."
Sokka and his dad: Love it. Love it so much. I love seeing Sokka built up, and he definitely deserves it, but I wonder if this is the reward for a character arc well done, or the set up for a character arc that's about to start? Is his dad's praise his prize for crossing the finish line, or is it so he's built up with farther to fall?
I loved seeing more of the Southern Water Tribe. I loved the fashion. There's a lot of variety in accessories and variations on a few basic elements like those knee guard things. I loved their hairstyles. I loved how cozy and communal that command tent felt. I loved their ships. I wonder how often these guys work out, that they can make loading ramps that are presumably deployed and stashed out of the way frequently, out of whole logs rather than planks. I have a bone to pick with the child-friendly sea mine. But it provides a good set up for a dad joke, so I'll let it slide.
Zuko and Iroh: Of course the one time Zuko is allowed to be in a good place, it's so that he and Iroh both have farther to fall when the inevitable happens. Poor guy just can't catch a break. I'd be mad at Azula for the party crashing that I'm assuming she'll do next episode, but it's been established that Zuko has all nice things taken away from him as soon as he gets them, and I can't blame Azula for being a tool of the universe.
Azula & Long Feng: Azula's acting in Long Feng's prison cell was miles ahead of what Long Feng was doing in front of the Earth King, so I'm wondering if Long Feng has bitten off more than he can chew. Also: conspiring with the enemy to bring down your own city just so you can reinstall yourself as the power behind the throne that will presumably cease to exist as soon as the Fire Nation takes control? That is both treasonous beyond description and an incredible case of shooting yourself in the foot. What's Long Feng's plan here?
Toph and the Dunderheads: it says something about the consistency of Toph's characterisation from her introduction onwards that she breaks the universe this episode and my reaction was "that's neat." It's obviously a huge moment, but of course Toph can do that. Toph can do anything. More importantly, Toph knows that Toph can do anything, so Toph routinely does do anything, especially things she shouldn't be able to do. If you had asked me a few episodes back which character would be most likely to fundamentally redefine bending, I would have said Toph, since she's already fundamentally redefined bending with her earth sense sonar vision.
Also Toph just breaks stuff. Things that come into contact with her cease to function as intended and instead function as Toph requires. Look at the two idiots: both successful business owners, one also a successful hoodwinker of the richest family around. But they come into contact with Toph and their brains take an extended vacation.
Katara & the Generals: this plot was more like an extension of Azula's plot than its own standalone thing. You can't blame her for spilling the news about Zuko and Iroh to someone she honestly thought was Suki. Not much else to say about it, although it's cute that she asks for a table for two at the tea shop. Momo gets a chair!
I like that there's a theme this episode of things going wrong despite the best intentions. No one's acting maliciously here apart from the Antagonists. The Earth King is having an honest chat with people he thought were friends. Sokka vouched for people he honestly thought were the Kyoshi Warriors. Katara shares information about a presumed threat with people she honestly thought were her allies. You can quibble with the wisdom of some of these decisions, but there were all done with good intentions. The best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry and all that. It brings to mind that Star Trek quote about how you can do everything right and still lose. And this set up is going to hit harder when whatever goes wrong next episode happens. And something will go wrong. A few months ago I figured that the Season 2 finale would be a triumph, but all signs are pointing towards a tragedy instead.
This episode was visually stunning, the soundtrack in the Air Temple sections especially was very evocative, and I applaud the minds that could juggle that many plot threads at once without dropping any. This one is definitely going on my rewatch list.

A/N: Okay so for the sake of moving things along, I'm gonna be compressing episodes together. Don't worry, we'll still get pivotal moments and plenty of angst inbetween as well as Orora's interaction with the Gaang, plus Zuko's turmoil, but just a bit fast paced cuz I know we're all excited to get to the Day of the Black Sun. One more thing, this chapter tends to get a little.....dark at some points. Orora is dealing with the trauma of Zuko betraying her, and Zuko is just warring with himself. So yeah, neither teenager is in a good place right now. BUT! Other then that! Happy reading lovelies!
Tumblr media
He was tossing and turning in his sleep. Half formed thoughts and lucid dreams plagued his mind. Nothing made sense.
Nothing except...........the thought of her.
Opening his eyes, he was greeted with the sight of Orora sitting on the edge of his bed. "Can't sleep huh?" She asked, sounding just as amused as he remembered.
Ignoring her, he sat up, running a hand down his face. "So whats on your mind?" She asked, standing to move around the room. "The Fire Lord?" He shook his head, though he was lying. "Azula?" Another shake of his head. "Aang?" She sounded a lot closer.
He was about to shake his head when something compelled him to look up and meet her gaze. It was almost scary, how clearly his mind could conjure her. And not just the physical aspect of her. He could actually imagine her warmth, and smell the perfume she had taken to wearing in Ba Sing Se.
"Of course, you're not thinking of me." She continued, sitting in front of him. "I mean why would you? I mean nothing to you." The look she fixed him with was once more a mirror image of what he remembered from the catacombs. His heart leaped in his throat.
A sudden flicker of color had his eyes darting towards the string on his finger.
It glowed a feeble blue, before disappearing.
He looked back up.
She was gone.
                                           ————————–
"I think I see a cave below." Aang called out from beside her, though she could barely see through the cloud that drifted around them.
Sokka hushed him instantly. "Shh! Keep quiet!" Orora rolled her eyes as she scratched Momo behind the head. "Sokka, I doubt anyone is around this place for miles." She pointed out to which Sokka shot her a glare.
Appa landed as Aang dissipated the cloud he had been airbending around them. Sokka jumped down and looked around suspiciously before crossing his arms and turning to look at the rest of them as they disembarked from the Bison.
He looked so much like a father disappointed at his children that Orora had to suppress a smile to lest she annoy him further.
"Great job with the cloud camo." He praised Aang, to which the young Avatar smiled. "But next time, let's disguise ourselves as the kind of cloud that knows how to keep its mouth shut." He ended, before moving to look around once more.
"You gonna check under the rocks for booby traps Sokka?" Orora called out, unable to keep from taking a jab at the boy's suspicious nature.
Toph, who was standing next to her, and who also couldn't let such a golden tease Sokka opportunity go to waste added. "Yeah, we wouldn't want a bird to hear us chatting up there and turn us in." Aang and Katara, who had been holding back their smiles, smothered their giggles.
His face set in an annoyed scowl, Sokka rounded on all four of them. "Hey, we're in enemy territory." He pointed above his head where a few birds sat atop the boulder right behind him. "Those are enemy birds." He whispered harshly. One of the Toucan Puffin jumped onto his head and screeched.
"Maybe he thinks your ponytail is a friend." This time the other three did start laughing out loud as they walked towards the cave Aang had seen earlier. Grumbling under his breath, Sokka followed after them, though he did not stop in his.........reconnaissance. He brushed past Orora, prompting the girl to scowl at him in annoyance.
The group stood around as Sokka continued to investigate, and once he was satisfied he stood up straight and grinned. "Well, this is it. This is how we'll be living until the invasion begins. Hiding in cave after cave after cave after cave." His head fell lower and lower as his voice lost the enthusiasm behind it and his shoulders slumped.
Katara rolled her eyes at her brother's antics. "Sokka, we don't need to become cave people. What we need is some new clothes." She said, gesturing to herself as well as the rest of the group. Aside from Sokka, who wore the Fire Nation Soldier uniform, all four of them were wearing clothes of their respective nations, except for Orora, with cloaks thrown over their shoulders.
Orora glanced down at herself and grimaced. "Yeah, I think red on green is a little out of fashion." She flicked the front of her dress in annoyance. "Besides if we get Fire Nation clothes we can just walk around in the open no?" She continued, turning to look at her friends.
Aang nodded. "Yeah, blending in is better than hiding out. If we get Fire Nation disguises, we would be just as safe as we would be hiding in a cave." He finished with a big grin.
Having taken to sitting down on the stone floor, Toph nodded. "Plus, they have real food out there. Does anyone want to sit in the dirt and eat cave hoppers?" The girl punched the side of the cave, causing several hoppers to jump out. Feeling a shiver run up her spine, Orora quickly stepped a little ways away from the creepy crawlies, and tried very hard not to look at Momo who was chomping on one of them.
Sokka sighed before looking at Momo. "Looks like we got outvoted, sport." He said, before cheerfully proclaiming. "Let's get some new clothes."
Seems the thought of not living in a cave all the time cheered him up.
And for once luck was on their side.
All five of them crouched behind a rock that overlooked a Fire Nation home with a waterfall nearby. There were rows upon rows of clothes hanging over natural steam vents. As her blue eyes darted from one clothing item to the next, Orora contemplated on what to take.
"I don't know about this." Aang whispered. "These clothes belong to somebody."
Katara, who had been on her one side, jumped out from behind the rock. "I call the silk robe!" She called, grabbing two outfits.
The other waterbender was quick to follow. "No fair Katara! I had my eye on that!"
Aang blinked as the two girls began to race between the maze of clothes, darting to and fro, examining clothes, and picking the ones they liked and leaving what they didn't. "But if it's essential to our survival." He mused, before he too perked up and jumped over the rock. "Then I call the suit!"
Though there was a flurry of activity inbetween the clothing lines, each of them was discrete as they grabbed clothes here and there. Anything they wouldn't need would be returned, but for now grabbing as many garments seemed to be the best way to go about it.
Soon they had all picked out their clothes and moved away to quickly change. Orora looked at what she had picked out. A pair of pants that slid over her legs, sitting loosely and ending just below her knees. Pulling the laces on the edge, she was able to create a slight ruffle once she tied it up. She paired it with a shin length skirt wrapped around her waist, but had made a slight modification by splitting the sides of the skirt to allow her legs to move better.
Her top was a deep red bandeau, with gold accents along the edges, that left her shoulders and part of her navel bare, revealing soft brown skin. She pulled on a pair of armbands that came up to her elbows. They were the same color as the top, and the ends were tipped in gold.
A nearby shed had revealed several shoes within. With a shoe size that was a little tough to find, Orora had taken the first one that fit her. They were a dark brown with a golden stripe down the front to the tip and came up to her calf. Pulling them on, she turned her attention to her reflection.
Now that her hair was long enough, she was able to make a braid that circled around her head like a crown, keeping stray strands out of her face.
Pursing her lips, she twisted this way and that, wanting to see herself from all angles. It wasn't her first choice of outfit, but she didn't have many options. Besides, it felt strange to be wearing red when all she associated with that color was fear.
She missed wearing blue, the girl suddenly realized, sighing to herself. Now she understood why Zuko had hated the colors of the Earth Kingdom. He had missed the colors of his Nation.
A scowl creased her features. Why had she just thought of him? He didn't even deserve a single second of her time.
Growling to herself, and ignoring the way her heart twinged, she bundled up her clothes and threw them into the river, causing her reflection to ripple.
                                           ————————–
Once they had all reconvened, the small group walked into the nearby city to purchase some other items they needed. Accessories to go with their now outfits.
Katara bought a new necklace, swapping the one she wore. Toph chose a headband, Sokka picked out a top knot. Aang, already wearing a headband, didn't pick anything out. Orora took a simple hair clip that would keep her braid in place.
Now for the next problem.
Food.
"I'm starving!" Toph groaned. Her complain was followed by a rumble from her stomach. Katara smiled as she patted Toph's shoulder in reassurance. "Don't worry, that's what we're gonna do next."
Before stepping out into the street, they stood behind a wall, waiting for Aang to finish hiding Momo.
Seeing him pat down Momo's ears and hide him inside his shirt, Orora raised an eyebrow. "You sure he won't get out Aang?" She asked, to which he grinned. "Momo knows how to keep still, don't you buddy?" He nearly stuck his face into his shirt. The poor animal responded with a series of chitters.
"I used to visit my friend Kuzon here a hundred years ago." Aang said in a cheerful tone. "So, everyone just follow my lead and stay cool. Or, as they say in the Fire Nation, 'stay flamin'." He walked out from behind the building. With a brief look of confusion she shared with Katara, the rest of the followed after him.
As they looked for a restaurant, Aang continued to greet people n the strange lingo he had learned a hundred years ago. "If he keeps saying that we're definitely gonna get noticed." Toph stated.
Finally finding a restaurant, they all moved to step inside but Aang stopped. "Oh, we're going to a meat place?"
Sokka shrugged. "Come on, Aang, everyone here eats meat. Even the meat!" He pointed towards a hippocow who was consuming a piece of meat.
Aang grimaced. "You guys go ahead. I'll just get some lettuce out of the garbage." Katara waved at him before they entered the building. "Stay out of trouble." Orora called over her shoulder. Aang gave her a playful salute.
                                           ————————–
It turns out, she didn't have much of an appetite.
And given that she felt a little restless, Orora decided to walk back to the cave by herself, leaving Sokka to nearly eat the whole restaurant out.
She took her time, looking around at the buildings, and watching the Fire Nation civilians go about their everyday lives. It seemed so strange, to be walking through the enemy and have them acting so normal. Then again they were normal. None of them were soldiers. She doubted any of them had anything to do with the war.
The young waterbender took a long while walking around and just exploring, and it wasn't until it was sundown, that she realized that it was getting late.
Changing course, she walked out of town following the stream towards the cave they would be staying in for the next few days. As she walked, her gaze slowly began to shift to the babbling stream she walked alongside.
Her steps slowed, and soon she came to a stop.
The girl stood there, staring at the water as it rushed by. Ever changing, ever shifting.
It followed it's own course, she thought, just like she had. And yet the stream seemed to have made its way in the world with no obstacles, so why couldn't she do the same?
Her obstacle wasn't physical. It was mental and emotional.
Since Ba Sing Se, she had kept her attention towards her friends and their well-being. There had never been a moment when she had been alone. And if she happened to be alone, she would try to distract herself by either training or wandering around, just as she had done just now around the town.
Now?
She was alone.
With nothing but her thoughts, and the stream for company.
And her mind went to the one person she had no desire to think of and yet.......he was always there.
At the back of her mind.
Zuko.
Her soulmate.
The boy who had decided to return to the Fire Nation. To a father who had banished him. Had burned him.
What Orora couldn't wrap her head around was the fact that he had just............left.
He'd just left.
Her and his Uncle.
Had he not thought of how his actions would effect either of them?
Had he not loved his Uncle?
Love.
She........didn't think he loved her. But he did at least care for her.
Didn't he?
Or rather hadn't he?
Did he still think about her? Or had he already forgotten all that they had shared in Ba Sing Se? All those moments when it looked like they were progressing with their friendship. All those talks they had had, sharing everything with each other.
Had all that amounted to..........nothing?
Was she nothing to him?
Had she not been enough?
That strange sensation began to creep up her throat again, she gulped it back but it took her a couple of tries before it disappeared.
She stared into the watery depths of the stream, completely missing the way her string glowed a dull red for a second before disappearing.
"Orora?"
The sound of her name suddenly echoed in her ears and she blinked. Shaking her head to clear herself of the fog that seemed to have descended upon her, the girl quickly turned her head to the source of the sound.
Aang looked at her from where he stood a few feet away, covered in dirt. "Are you alright? I've been calling out to you for a long time now?" He asked, concern in his grey eyes.
"I'm......fine." She finally responded, pushing away her morbid thoughts and forcing herself to pay attention to Aang. "Why're you covered in dirt?" She asked, wanting to change the subject lest the boy pick up on what had her mind so occupied.
He rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "I went to play hide and explode with some new friends of mine." He said. Orora raised an eyebrow. "Uh huh, and where exactly did you make these friends?" From what the others had told her, Aang had the tendency to make friends wherever he went.
Aang grinned. "At school."
That was not the answer she had been expecting.
She blinked.
"Say what?"
                                           ————————–
Twice now he had gone to the prison.
The first time he had turned back, not even making it t the door. The second time he had walked in, threatened a guard before entering the one cell room he had been dreading to.
His Uncle's.
Not that going there had done him any good.
His Uncle had not spoken a word, and the already panicked and confused Prince had shouted a few choice words before going back the way he came.
It wasn't until the next morning, when he woke up and was playing around with his breakfast instead of actually eating it, did he realize that all that anger and confusion had morphed into something else completely.
Guilt and shame.
Zuko had wanted nothing more then to forget about it, to go about his day as if nothing had happened the night before. So when Mai had suggested that they take a private stroll to the nearby rocky outcrop that provided gorgeous views of the landscape he had almost said yes.
What had stopped him?
Memories of a blue eyed girl.
Her smile. Her presence. Her kindness. Her words. Her comfort. Her voice. Her hugs. Her laughter. Her smile. Her.............kiss.
"Thanks Mai, but I want to be alone right now." He finally responded. She gave a frown, her lips pinched.
"You know I'm getting tired of throwing hints and you not picking up on them Zuko." He flinched, thinking that maybe he had been a little dismissive of Mai's efforts to win him over.
There would have been a time when he would have actually reciprocated her feelings, and enjoyed them as well.
Now?
Now the very thought of even spending time with Mai had him feeling guilty.
As if he were going behind Orora's back.
Which was ridiculous, because they hadn't even been together officially. They'd just been friends.
But.....friends didn't kiss like they did.
Soulmates did.
Neither of them had thought of accepting the bond either, really they'd never even talked about it.
Mai had already walked off, and Zuko had barely noticed. His eyes were slightly glazed as he focused on the image of the water tribe girl he had called his friend for so many months.
If she were to see him now, she wouldn't be able to recognize him, he was sure.
Guilt and shame returned tenfold.
Though it was futile, he figured a walk along the same route Mai had suggested would do him some good. Pretty soon he was sitting atop a large flat boulder, one leg hanging over the side while the other he had pulled up so he could rest his arm on his knee.
The sun had just begun to set, casting gorgeous red, orange and yellow hues all around. He closed his eyes.
"You know its funny."
His eyes shot open and he turned his head. Orora was sitting beside him, knees pulled up to her chest. For the first time since his return home, there was a small smile playing about her lips. He stared, stunned.
"While we were in Ba Sing Se, we saw the night sky, and we watched a couple of sunrises together. But never a sunset." She turned her head so she could look at him. "I wonder why is that."
Feeling his own lips pull into a small smile. "Probably because we were too tired from being in the tea shop all day." He responded to which she sighed and nodded. "Yeah.......I just wish we had watched one together."
She lay her hands flat on either side of her body, leaning back on her arms, tilting her head back as she took in the last bit of warmth.
Zuko stared.
How was it that such a simple act would make her appear even more pretty then she already was? Had she always been this beautiful, or was his mind making her appear even more so then she already was?
Reaching out, he gently took her hand in his. Orora looked at him, surprise evident across her features. But Zuko was hardly aware of that, as he concentrated on the feel of her hand in his. Her scent as it surrounded him. And her presence that had always calmed him.
And yet.........the guilt..........the shame lingered.......
"I'm surprised to find you here by yourself Zuko. I figured you would be with Mai."
His eyes shot open and his head whipped to the side to see his sister leaning against a nearby rock wall. Her signature smirk was present across her lips as she looked at him.
"What do you want Azula?" He asked, turning his head back to it's original placement. Walking to stand in front of him, Azula cut straight to the point.
"So, I've heard you've been to visit your uncle fatso in the prison tower." Her words prompted him to slide down and stand in front of her, hands fisted in anger and glaring at her.
"That guard told you." He growled angrily, to which Azula shook her head, her smirk growing.
"No." She said, as calm as could be. "You did. Just now."
He wanted to kick himself for his own stupidity. Why did he have to go and fall for Azula's tricks every time. Still he stepped away from her and sighed. "Okay, you caught me. What is it that you want, Azula?"
His sister shrugged. "Actually, nothing." He stared up at her in disbelief. "Believe it or not, I'm looking out for you. If people find out you've been to see Uncle, they'll think you're plotting with him. Just be careful, Dum-Dum."
With that she walked off, leaving Zuko to think over what had just happened. There had to be an agenda behind her little visit. Azula didn't speak to him unless she wanted something. Or when she wanted to torment him and make his life miserable.
Too late for that, he mused to himself, lifting the hand that had held Orora's so many times.
He was already miserable.
The thread flickered a feeble blue before disappearing.
                                           ————————–
This was rather strange for lack of a better word.
She'd attended partied growing up, but they had all been rather stiff and solemn affairs.
And there was nothing stiff and solemn about the dance party Aang had decided to throw.
Kids dancing, laughing, chatting and just generally being......kids.
She stood in the corner beside the table Toph and Katara occupied, sipping from her the cup the former had earthbended for their use. The cave looked gorgeous, with hundreds of candles flickering against the walls. Music filled the air as Aang taught his new friends all the dance moves he knew from a hundred years ago.
"Who knew Twinkle-toes could dance." Toph said as she sipped her drink.
"Hope those dances are still relevant." Orora added, smiling to herself as Aang began to pull a few girls to the dance floor, who followed eagerly. Her eyes shot to Katara, and she couldn't help but purse her lips to keep from laughing at the annoyed look on the girl's face.
But she didn't have to wait long. Aang approached Katara, holding out his hand and asking her for a dance.
Orora couldn't help but smile brightly as the both of them ran to the dance floor hand in hand.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and simply stared at the two dancers. Orora recognized the dance. It was actually a series of waterbending forms that required two people to perform together. Looks like Aang had decided to put a little spin on his and Katara's fighting skills to other use.
She sighed.
They looked so happy, smiling and laughing as they glided across the floor. They deserved it. The both of them had seen too many horrors and just deserved to be happy with each other. Anyone could see why they were picked to be soulmates. If they decided to tell anyone that is.
They just fit together.
Like two pieces of a puzzle.
Like.........
Like her and Zuko had been.
Her heart constricted painfully in her chest, prompting her to gulp down her drink, as if it would get rid of the pain. Though the ache remained. While Orora went off to refill her cup, Toph's unblinking eyes followed her retreating back.
This wasn't the first time the young earthbender had picked up on the weird anomaly. And she was starting to wander what it was all about.
                                           ————————–
He was back again.
He didn't know why he kept coming back. Call it desperation. His Uncle had always been the one he turned to during his hour of need. It was upon returning to the Fire Capital that Zuko realized he had no one other then his Uncle who could give him advice and whom he could trust.
Despite the guilt he felt every time he visited him, Zuko always pushed past it.
Why?
He was getting desperate.
As he slid some food through the bars of the prison behind which his Uncle sat, he couldn't help but feel that guilt increase tenfold as he wandered what kind of food were they even giving him.
If he received any food at all.
"I brought you some komodo chicken. I know you don't care for it, but I figure it beats prison food." He said, his low voice echoing against the cold stone walls of the prison.
"I admit it." He began again after a beat of silence. "I have everything I always wanted." Not everything, an inner voice supplied, conjuring up an image of a certain waterbender girl with white in her hair. "But it's not as all how I thought it would be. The truth is, I need your advice."
Leaning forward he gripped the bars of the door. "I think the Avatar is still alive, I know he's out there, I'm losing my mind." His Uncle did not even respond. Growing desperate by the moment, Zuko continued.
"Please, Uncle, I'm so confused I need your help." His words were met with silence. All that fear, guilt and loneliness boiled down to one emotion.
Anger.
Anger he let out on his Uncle as he suddenly stood.[Iroh still has nothing to say to him. "Forget it." He declared, his hands shook with anger as he began to walk out of the room. "I'll solve it myself! Waste away in here for all I care!"
A voice called out.
"Is this how you behave with your elders Zuko?"
The boy in question whipped his head around to see Orora standing next to his Uncle behind bars. She was looking at him with such disappointment. "Stay out of it Orora!" He commanded, before walking out and slamming the door behind him.
Behind him Iroh looked up, wandering why his nephew would say such a thing. The thought of his young pupil had the old Master hoping and praying that she was safe.
Two lone tears slid down his cheek.
One for his nephew, who had lost his way, and one for his pupil, who had lost everything.
                                           ————————–
It had to be done.
This was the final resort.
He was desperate.
There was nothing else he could do.
As the man he had hired approached, Zuko lowered his hood and looked at him. "You're sure you weren't followed?" He asked the giant of a man with the metal leg. The towering figure gave no response.
"I've heard about you." Zuko continued. "They say you're good at what you do, and even better at keeping secrets." This was it. His chance to keep what he deserved.
"The Avatar is alive." He revealed, a slight tremor in his voice as he continued. "I want you to find him, and end him." After a few moments, the man nodded in confirmation. Satisfied, Zuko pulled back his hood. His heart clenched in his chest, and his stomach flipped. Despite the fact that he had hardly eaten throughout the day, he felt like he was going to be sick. He quickly hurried off, as the urge to take back his order rose in him in a wave of guilt and shame.
No sooner had he disappeared from view when another hooded figure approached, though this figure did not remove their hood, anyone who knew them would recognize the voice.
"You heard what my brother said. And no matter what, do not stop for anything."
The voice continued, smooth and without the slightest bit of tremor as it gave the orders to kill. "I will pay you thrice as much as he does if you follow my orders, and four times my weight in gold if you return with one of the Avatar's companions."
The man blinked at the figure.
"A watertribe girl, with white in her hair." Anyone else who heard the voice, would be able to pick up on the absolute glee in the person's tone.
After all, there was nothing Princess Azula loved more then tormenting her brother.
                                           ————————–
She stared into the murky waters of the river.
The voices of the rest of the group were muffled behind her as she sat a little ways apart from them.
They had arrived at the river with the town situated in the middle of it. Calling it a town was a bit of a stretch. It was nothing more then series of planks nailed together to form streets, with people living out in the open with nothing to protect them from the natural elements.
But that wasn't what had gotten to her.
It was the people.
People who were sick, children who looked like they hadn't eaten a proper meal in days. Her heart physically ached at the sight. She'd moved to suggest that they help them, with Katara taking her side, but Sokka had stopped them. They couldn't reveal who they were by using Healing abilities.
He was right though. They had to think practically. And though it went against her very nature to not help, Orora kept her gaze forward, not wanting to meet the eyes of some destitute soul she had the ability to save but couldn't.
Besides, she doubted she would be able to help anyone much, what with her own lack of strength. For the past couple of days her appetite had been completely non-existent, and she was barely sleeping. She would doze off, but then as she would begin to fall deeper into sleep, Orora would forcefully jerk herself awake.
Why?
Because of the nightmares.
Nightmares that were just as horrible as the one from the previous night, if not more. All of them included someone she loved getting hurt or tortured or being killed.
And she couldn't take it.
She just couldn't take it.
"Hey?" She blinked as her head turned to the side and watched as Aang sat down beside her. Aang. The sweetest boy she would ever meet. With a fate that was so difficult and full of obstacles that she didn't think was fair to him. He deserved so much more. So much more then always being on the run, never being a kid all the time like he was supposed to. Loosing his people, his friends, his loved ones at the hands of a mad Fire Lord. He had died, and yet somehow, he still retained his sweet nature.
How could fate be so cruel to him?
"Enjoying the view?" He asked, referring to the polluted river in a joking manner. The older girl attempted to smile, but it was a grimace at best. As she turned her gaze towards the heavens where the moon had appeared out from behind the clouds Aang frowned.
Something was wrong.
Her lips parted as she spoke. "Its strange, how fate gives you something, but then takes it away again. These people have this river, but their own superiors have taken it away from them for their own gain." She hardly blinked as her eyes shifted from the moon to the lake. "Makes you question everything, doesn't it?" She muttered, a strange look in her eyes, never once wavering from the murky water in front of her.
Beside her Aang blinked, his eyes darted to the half-eaten bowl of food beside her. "Are you.......feeling alright Orora?" He asked, the worry evident in his tone and his eyes as he reached out to place a tentative hand on her shoulder.
He felt her tense under his touch. Her back straightened, her racing mind suddenly coming to a halt.
"I'm fine Aang."
Lie.
"Are you talking about the river or about someone else?" Aang asked, testing the waters, hoping he didn't say the wrong thing.
Someone else.
Zuko.
He meant Zuko.
Her soulmate.
In a way, she was addressing him as well. Or rather she was addressing the way she had lost him. Had she lost him though? Had he ever been hers to behind with?
He had been the one to turn his back on her. To attack her friends meant to attack her.
She blinked, her eyes heavy with sleep yet she couldn't go to sleep. She wouldn't.
Not when it meant she had to see Zuko hurt or dead over and over again.
He was gone from her life, but that did not mean she did not miss him. She did.
But now was not the time to dwell on that. Instead, the older girl shrugged her shoulders in a silent response. Aang seemed to accept it, since he fell silent next to her.
Orora stayed there for a few more minutes before she stood up, getting ready to go to bed.
The food she barely touched, she gave to Momo.
                                           ————————–
Orora laughed as she pulled him along through the streets of Ba Sing Se.
"Come on Zuko! The fireworks are about to start and I'm not going to miss them." She called over her shoulder. Dropping his hand so he would follow on his own, she turned a corner disappearing from view.
Zuko smiled as he walked after her at a much normal pace.
"If I run after you anyone might mistake me for a robber chasing you or something." He called in a playful tone, as he too turned a corner and came to an open courtyard.
The scene that greeted him had the smile dying on his lips, and his amber eyes to widen in fear and panic.
There stood his father and sister, in full Royal Attire, with more then a handful of soldiers standing behind them.
But that wasn't what got his attention.
It was the sight of Orora, shackled and in his sister's grasp. There were chains on her wrists, around her throat and even her ankles. Her clothes were torn, her hair hanging in front of her lowered face as she knelt in front of his family.
"Zuko, you did not tell me you found your soulmate." Ozai spoke in a pleasant tone as he regarded his son with a look that had always frozen him in place. "That is the sort of news a son shares with his father. I had thought perhaps we were more closer then before your banishment."
The scene around him had changed.
He now stood in the courtyard of the Fire Palace, though the scene in front of him stayed the same.
His soulmate.
In chains.
Azula sighed. "Oh Zuzu, why do you insist on keeping secrets from your own family?" She purred in a tone that had more of a thread behind it then a question.
"Father, I-" He started but then fell silent when his Father held up a hand.
He shook his head. "Not a word Zuko. I would much prefer to hear a few certain words from your lovely soulmate here."
With that the Fire Lord walked forward, only to yank one of the chains. It was connected to the shackle around Orora's throat. The yank forced her to tilt her head back.
Zuko nearly threw up.
Her lips were bloody, her nose broken with dried blood staining her upper lip. One of her eyes was black, while the other was completely shut because of the swelling. There were numerous cuts and bruises all across her once unmarred brown skin.
But worst of all?
There was a burn mark on her cheek. As if she had been slapped by a hand holding a flame.
"Now my dear, I want you to take a good look at my son and tell me." He pulled the chain, forcing her to turn her head to look at him. Tears filled his eyes at the sight of her beautiful face, her one good eye betraying no emotion.
"Is he your soulmate?"
A beat of silence, where Zuko held his breath.
But then he saw it.
A lone tear escaping her one good eye.
Then she spoke the words that had his heart stopping in his chest.
"No, he's not."
His heart shattered.
                                           ————————–
With a heartbreaking cry, Zuko shot awake, his arm held out in front of him as if he were reaching for something.
For someone.
His chest rose and fell as he panted for breath, sweat lined his body as his mind played the nightmare in his mind over and over again. He could even feel sweat on his face and getting into his eyes since they were stinging so much.
He buried his head in his hands, curling in on himself where he sat.
How could he ever have thought it? How could he ever have thought of bringing Orora here? His Father would never have accepted her as his soulmate. His sister would've tormented her every single day. She wouldn't have been safe.
His eyes stung and he brushed away the sweat that stained his cheeks. Suddenly he stopped, staring at the drops of sweat that shone on his palm.
Not sweat, tears.
He was crying.
He was crying because he had nearly brought Orora to certain death if he had asked her to come with him.
What had he been thinking?
The window beside his bed was open, casting the light of the full moon on his bed. Despite the horrifying nightmare still plaguing him, he turned his head to look at the moon.
"That was horrible wasn't it?" Orora asked from where she sat at the foot of his bed. He always turned to look at her whenever she would appear like this.
But right then, he couldn't.
The image of her so hurt and burned was still too fresh in his mind.
"Don't worry, I've had the same dreams. Though in mine everyone I care about or love always die."
Finally, he turned his head, only to meet her gaze and having his heart stop.
She looked so sad.
So utterly heartbroken.
He had done that to her, he suddenly realized as she stood to walk up next to him beside the bed. He had made her so incredibly unhappy because of his choice. Because he had wanted his old life back.
He had thrown everything they had in her face and just left her.
His stomach roiled inside him, and if he had anything in it, Zuko was sure he would throw up.
She was standing in a patch of moonlight, appearing as ethereal as the Moon Spirit herself as she looked at him. His mouth opened, wanting to say something, anything to her.
But she beat him to it.
"I hope you found whatever it was you were looking for Zuko. I hope it was all worth it in the end."
He blinked and she was gone.
                                           ————————–
"Hey guys, we need to talk." Katara called out to everyone, minus Orora. The older girl had volunteered to go get some food from the nearby town they had saved a few days ago.
"About your hair loopies and how out of fashion they were so you're gonna keep this hairstyle instead?" Sokka quipped from where he was cleaning his brand new sword.
His sister glared at him. "No, this is serious. Its about Orora." Her glare melted away to a look of concern. "I'm worried about her." She revealed. Almost instantly the very atmosphere of their small camp became somber. Sokka put his sword down, Toph stopped tossing the space rock in the air, and Aang paused where he had been playing with Momo.
"She's not acting like herself." Katara continued, worry evident in her tone as she spoke. Aang sat up straighter. "You've noticed it too?" He asked, wanting to confirm her words. Sokka frowned in thought where he sat, a hand coming up to stroke his chin in thought.
"Come to think of it, she has been acting a little strange the past few days." He commented. "I mean every time I wake up at night to use the little boy's bush, she's always awake. No matter what time of night."
Aang nodded. "Yeah I mean, have you seen the circles under her eyes, and she hasn't been practicing her bending either. When was the last time any of you saw her actually practice. She was so strict about it in the first week or so since we left the ship."
Pursing her lips Katara stepped forward. "Its not just that, I've noticed she's not eating enough. She's even thinner then when we started traveling through the Fire Nation. And I've seen her give her food to Momo or Appa most of the time." Toph, not wanting to keep what she had discovered to herself sat up.
"Guys, there's something else I've noticed." She revealed. As everyone stared at her eagerly, she continued. "Sometimes, I feel her heart pause before picking back up again." She frowned. "Its strange as if her heart.......skipped a beat or something."
Aang's eyes widened in horror, a thought forming in his mind as Katara spoke. "But isn't that dangerous? Does she have a heart condition we don't know about?" She asked, looking around the group the worry clear in her eyes. Sokka, noticing Aang's expression frowned.
"You okay there Aang?" He called out, to which the younger boy pursed his lips. "I am, but I think I know why Orora is acting the way she is." He revealed. The other three stepped forward, demanding to know what he knew.
They were all worried about Orora. Where she had been the one to get them to get up every morning during those horrible days when Aang was in a coma, now she was the last one up. She would go about her day in a strange way, as if she had no desire to do what she was tasked to do.
Aang held up a placating hand. "Look what I know, I can reveal until I ask Orora. Its her secret, and I don't want to betray her. But!" He called over the sounds of protests that greeted his words. "I have an idea."
Quickly pulling out a map of the Fire Nation, he spread it on the ground. The rest of them crouched over it, heads brushing together. "We're near this waterfall and its surrounded by a lot of rocks so that will give us some cover to just have a mini-vacation." He looked at each of his friends. "We'll stay there for a few days and maybe, without the constant moving around, Orora will be able to rest properly, and even tell us whats bothering her."
Everyone looked to Sokka for confirmation, hoping that the little detour wouldn't come in the way of the route he had designed for them. But Sokka wasn't even thinking of that. He was thinking of his friend, and how sad she appeared all the time.
Her sadness was familiar to him.
Somehow.
The sadness in her eyes, was the same he had carried after Yue had died.
Nodding in determination he grinned. "Alright then Gaang. Operation Get Orora To Her Normal Self will launch tomorrow."
                                           ————————–
It was late at night, and he was sitting beside the pond he had frequented so often with his mother. The garden was empty, silence surrounded him as he stared into the clear water of the pond, the moon shining her light down on it, reflecting her silvery glow against the flat surface.
                                           ————————–
It was late at night, and she was sitting in front of the fire, while everyone else slept around her. The silence of the night was broken by the sound of fire crackling and the occasional snapping of a twig whenever the fire would eat away at the flesh of the wood. The warmth of the fire enveloped her.
                                           ————————–
He was sitting with his legs pressed to his chest, his chin resting between his knees. While one arm was wrapped around his legs, the other was held aloft in front of him, his fingers holding up the small comb he had found laying on the battle-ridden floor of the catacombs.
                                           ————————–
She was sitting with her legs pressed to her chest, her chin resting between her knees. Both her arms were wrapped around her legs, keeping herself in a semi fetal position as she stared into the fire. The fire continued to flicker, casting strange shadows against her brown skin.
                                           ————————–
This was all he had left to remember her by. A comb. A blue comb with a dragon. Ironic that it was a dragon since it was the symbol for fire. Ironic that it was blue, the color of her Nation. Or more specifically, her eyes.
Her gorgeous ice blue eyes.
                                           ————————–
The fire was all she had left to remember him by. The fire that burned within him. The fire that burned in his hands when he fought an opponent. Maybe it was her imagination, but if she stared hard enough, she could picture his eyes looking back at her through the fire.
His beautiful warm amber eyes.
                                           ————————–
His heart clenched in his chest, so painful that he actually grunted softly from the pain of it. His mind conjured memory after memory. Memories of her. Of the brief life they had shared before and in Ba Sing Se. All those moments where nothing else had mattered.
Nothing except her.
                                           ————————–

He brought the comb to his chest, as if it would alleviate the pain he felt.
                                           ————————–
She had nothing to comfort her, nothing to remember him by except her memories.
                                           ————————–
He now understood why he was seeing her everywhere. Why everything he did reminded him of her. Why she plagued his mind no matter the time of day or night. Why he could not eat or sleep.

She just missed him so much.
                                           ————————–
As they both buried heir faces in their arms, Zuko with tears stinging his eyes, and Orora with a vacant emotionless expression on her face, they both missed the way their strings glowed.
And they continued to glow throughout the night.
Fate had intended them to see the light, yet neither of them saw it.
Instead they each succumbed deeper and deeper into their mutual pits of utter despair and hopelessness.

Of course, Appa will never be replaced but I do adore the bisons in tlok for what they are.
Oogi
Oogi is a wonderful big ole family vehicle and he carries the family and Tenzin around and even made his tail into a ramp for the kids to skate down. And he's very brave, even when latched onto by evil spirits which looked incredibly painful he still kept going, until he was eventually made to crash.
Tumblr media
He also gets along great with Naga and he seemed to love the airship. Which makes sense since its probably his first time in the air where he doesn't have to be the one flying which has to be an experience.
Tumblr media
Also I love the theory that Oogi's name was inspired by Sokka saying that Katara and Aang's affection for each other gave him "the oogies"
Tumblr media
Lefty
Lefty is Kai's bison and he is a fucking trooper.
After Kai and the airbenders save Lefty from the poachers, Lefty returns the favour by saving not only Kai, but also Tenzin, Asami, Mako and Bolin. He also helped Kai track the Red Lotus' airship which helped the group find Korra and the kidnapped airbenders!
Tumblr media
He carried 5 whole people on his back as a fucken baby put some respect on his name!
Tragically he was stolen by the evil Bumi and Meelo at least once. But they took him for an adventure so ig its ok
Tumblr media
Also he loafs
Tumblr media
Pepper
Freckles. That is all but I think it's important nonetheless
Tumblr media
Juicy
Ill be honest I fucking love Juicy. I know he's meant to be gross and all but I think he's probably thw most distinctive air bison we've seen ever and I can't help but find him endearing.
Like look at him! I know he's a snotty boi but he's so cute
Tumblr media
And he loves Opal so much! He's constantly nuzzling her and is particularly affectionate. Ans I like that while Opal good naturedly jokes about having checked if she can swap, she's still petting him and cuddling him and seems very loving of him too!
Tumblr media
Ans this is really realted to him but I am not over the fact that Opal had an Air Bison picture in her room when she was a kid
Tumblr media
Ita very important to me

Season 5 reaction
5x01 and Buck and Eddie are already acting like a married couple lmao. But i can understand where the panic attack Eddie had came from. Buck is now just like a concerned husband
5x02 and Clipboard Buck! I love Clipboard Buck! And naturally the way to Buck’s heart is through the kids in his life. He is so precious. And he immediately picked up on Eddie’s panic when Ravi assumed Ana was Eddie’s wife. And then in the firetruck when Buck is talking about the zoo we learn that Buck takes Chris there all the time. Buck is Chris’ dad, and no one can tell me otherwise lol. And Eddie looks so proud. And Bobby is such a dad. Love him. And him and Athena are so cute together
Also, Eddie breaking up with Ana? That scene was also done well. And Eddie acknowledged that he was stringing her along, which is great. Terrible that he did it, but great that he admitted to it
And i just wanna point out that Kenny is such an amazing actor. The emotion he conveys during this whole arc of Maddie leaving is just… whew. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Also, i should have known that Buck knew. I do get Chim’s frustration. The punch shocked me ngl. But, i can see why he did it. I dont think punching was the answer, but like i said. I see why it happened. And naturally Eddie is the one he calls for help the next day. They are husbands your honor
5x05. I LOVE RAVI. “Probie, if you’re gonna vomit do it somewhere else.” “Copy!” *Scurries off.* I love him lmao
And Buck’s panic in 5x06 when he hears the gun shot. He immediately feared that Eddie had been shot again and ran out as fast as he could. And Bobby getting breakfast with Ravi 😭. I love Dad Bobby moments. And speaking of dads, Eddie and Chris . He loves his kid so much and my heart cant handle it
And Michael wanting to propose to David in 5x08!! The whole montage of the rings and outfits is so funny and i love them so much. And im so happy David said yes!!
The scene in 5x09 where May walks into Bobby and Athena is also fucking hilarious. And Bobby’s little shuffle to the bedroom is just so quirky. And then when he goes “why does this keep happening to you?” Then interrupts Buck and says “No. I’m gonna tell you why.” Bobby is Buck’s dad and i love him so much for it
And later Buck called Eddie out for watching telenovelas and it was so domestic. And Eddie was eating up the drama between Clive and Toni. He just loves it lol. And the episode made me dislike Taylor less. But i really feel like Buck said The Words just cos she did. I dont feel like they were genuine. That might just be me tho
Then in 5x10, Eddie is decorating with Chris and he is just doing as Chris says cos he wants him to be happy and im just melting. This man loves his kid so much and it just makes me so happy. Then Hen’s “baby’s first Christmas” comment to Buck made me chuckle, then I got distracted by the Appa plushie that someone handed Bobby. I love my flying bison sm. And Taylor asked Bobby if Buck would like the sweaters! Everyone knows that Bobby is Buck’s dad! And later Eddie is talking to Buck about Chris’ nightmare. Husbands. They both love their kid so much
Eddie looks so miserable at the beginning of 5x11 ☹️. Baby boy just wants to be fighting fires with his boyfriend. But dinner with Eddie, Chris, Buck, and Taylor kinda surprised me honestly. But ig it makes sense. “You dont need to pretend with me.” Ok. Imma cry now. Thats so sweet wtf. But he misses the 118 and feels left out and i feel for him. Also, drunk Buck is so funny lmao. And Hen is like another sister.
I can understand that Eddie is frustrated that Bobby isn’t letting him back into the 118 yet, but bringing up Bobby’s past like that was totally uncalled for
Im glad that Buck finally told Taylor about the kiss in 5x13, but i didnt even think about how he was kinda trapping her so she couldnt leave, which is. Not great. But i guess they are wanting to work through it so thats good. But the ending with Eddie’s breakdown made me wanna cry. He is going through so much and he wants to get better but he keeps hitting rough patches. But having Buck there to support him and Chris is so sweet and i love that Buck is willing to have those hard convos with Eddie.
And the breakfast scene in 5x14 with Chris and Eddie? These two have a special place in my heart and i cannot handle it lmao. And of course i type that only for it to be a nightmare 😭. But father figure Bobby also has my heart. And the scene with the heart drawings. So domestic
And Karen in 5x15 is so cute. “To catch a thief!” I love her lmao. And Eddie is learning from therapy! Im so proud of him! And Buck was giving total puppy energy during the wedding call. I love him so much.
And in 5x16 Bobby called May his kid!! Excuse me while i cry. And the Eddie/Linda friendship is just so, idk, refreshing? Idk if that is a good word for it but i really like the idea of him being friends with everyone at dispatch. My boy needs to get out there lol. Josh is also such a flustered homosexual and like. Me too. And Eddie was so ready to be back in firefighter mode. Buck being completely clueless about what to not say to a patient then Eddie just. Shaking his head. And May calls Bobby her dad 😭😭😭
5x17: Buck messing with Chris’ dinosaur while Eddie is packing, man there is just something so domestic about it. And the Chim and Hen friendship is so funny i love it so much. And i just really dislike Taylor. Also i know that we call Buck the golden retriever, but Eddie looked like such a kicked puppy when we was talking to his dad. But im glad they had a conversation and they want to do better
5x18: Im glad to see Eddie acknowledging how bottling things up isnt good, even if its in his joking manner. “I dont have your bone structure. I could never pull it off.” Bro im DEAD. Thats so funny to me. And my boy Ravi. Talking about having a partner is about knowing that they will have your back. Buck, takes notes. Cos who’s back did you promise to have? Hmm?? Then Buck talks about partners being at their lowest together and still working together and growing together. If that isnt foreshadowing idk what is. And Eddie is back at the 118!! Obviously i knew it was gonna happen but im still happy
And thats that for season 5! I dont really have any other additional thoughts, just that with things that happened in season 7, it just feels like there was some foreshadowing for Buddie. But i think we all know that
As always, feel free to discuss!

Taken - Zutara - Part 21
First / Previous / Next / Masterpost
After Aang comes back with medicine, he acts strangely. He mentions having seemingly made a friend, but won't answer any questions. He then starts asking about Zuko of all people.
"I don't want to talk about it, Aang," Katara asks, as they head towards the mountain village. A fortuneteller, one who could accurately predict their intervention against a platypus-bear, could have some helpful advice for their journey. "Yes, we knew him before we found you. What's with the sudden interest, anyway?"
"Uh... No reason?"
When they got to the village, they were directed to Aunt Wu's. People welcomed them, even served them snacks. Aang was looking around, while Sokka stuffed his face. When the fortuneteller came out, Aang looked to Katara. She'd recommended the visit so Aang could learn more about his task, but she supposed she could go first.
As she sat with Aunt Wu, her hand out so the older woman could look at her palm, she waited.
"Despite your difficult job, your hands are quite smooth. Do you moisturize?"
Difficult job? Could Aunt Wu be talking about her job as a healer? "I have a special seaweed lotion a friend gave me... But I had to leave it behind when I left the South."
Wu ran finger carefully along a line of Katara's palm, humming softly.
Katara frowned. "What?"
The woman glanced up, her face sympathetic, despite her words. "You have a great romance in your life. The man you will marry..."
Her heart leaped in her chest. "What about him?"
Aunt Wu hummed again, her finger rubbing the line again. "You will have an amazing journey, one that can change the course of history. Tales will be told about you, about the challenges you overcome, and the sacrifices that he will make to be with you. He will be powerful, and your own strength will grow with his."
Her heart thundered, and she pulled her hand away. Aunt Wu looked at her in surprise. "Thank you, Aunt Wu. I think that's enough for today."
The woman stood, and led her back out. Katara barely heard what the fortuneteller said to Sokka, and didn't notice Aang leave. Instead, she rubbed at the line on her palm, her mind racing.
She knew, even without thinking his name, who she hoped it was. Already, their history was the stuff of storybooks. A captured princess, spirited away to an unfamiliar land, where a prince will eventually rescue her. But, he was working against them now. He was chasing them across the world, trying to capture the one person that gave Katara a chance of a peaceful life.
As Aang came out, she squeezed her palm to ground herself and looked at the younger boy.
"Anything helpful?"
Aang looked pretty pleased with himself, but side stepped the question. Nothing useful for the journey ahead, then.
"Let's get out of here," Katara said.
(Years later, when Katara is telling Zuko about what he had missed, he tells her about the volcano. Aunt Wu had predicted destruction, and the village had been evacuated what seemed to be mere hours after Katara and the others had left.)
They run into Bato not long after leaving Makapu. He's shocked to see them, and has plenty of questions for them.
How did they get there? How had they found the Avatar? Were they alright? Was Zuko with them?
Katara and Sokka explained as much as they could, Katara studiously avoiding the topic of Zuko. When Sokka began to talk about Zuko attacking them, she left the room, standing outside with Appa.
Bato came to find her after a bit, leaning against the bison with her.
"I know there's no way to prove it," he starts, looking up at the sky, "but I'm sure there's been some kind of misunderstanding. When he started telling up about war movements, about the best places to join with the Earth Kingdom Army, he knew what he was sacrificing. If word ever gets out, he'll not be the 'banished prince'. He'll be the traitor. As hard as it would be for him, I think he gave up on going home. Have you tried talking to him? Since you left, I mean."
Katara felt like there were rocks in her stomach. "No..."
"Maybe, the next time you see him, try to talk to him. I'm sure everything will be fine."
She breaths deeply, and goes back. They agree to go ice dodging and move on after, though Sokka wanted to go see their father. They didn't have time. As much as Katara tried to teach Aang waterbending, her form was all self taught and adapted from firebending. He needed a real master to teach him.
She could probably use a few lessons herself.

Your thoughts?
(I'm only mentioning the ones I don't agree with)
"Oogling him when he's half-naked"
As a brazilian, this one was HILARIOUS to me. He just has his shirt off because it's summer and bending is a physical exercise and he's going to sweat. This isn't him dramatically taking his shirt off at The Beach and a ton of fangirls appearing to drool all over him. This isn't sexual.
She's literally watching him and AANG practice firebending. That's all. Why are we making it about attraction, and why are we assuming she could only possibly be looking at Zuko when Aang is there too? By that logic, Ozai and Aang were checking each other out during their fight in the finale, and so were Zhao and Zuko during their Agni Kai - after all, they're LOOKING at EACH OTHER when NEITHER OF THEM has a SHIRT on.
"Note Katara's body language"
Literally what about it? I legitimately don't understand this one. Touching her hair is somehow weird or flirty? It's just hair!
Is it because she's sitting next to Zuko? What, she's not allowed to be too close to a guy without it being suggestive/flirty in some way? Again, as a brazilian, I am VERY confused. Somebody help me out here.
"I don't think anyone could argue sibling vibes in a scene in which they are visibly disgusted at the thought of being mistaken for a couple"
What? Like, sure, I can see SOME siblings just laughing it off and correcting the person who made a mistake, but being grossed out is a 100% valid reaction.
As a girl that grew up being told "You saying you don't like this boy can ONLY mean that you secretly like him" and had to hear an unhinged woman call my 11-year-old self "her future daughter in law" just because I was friends with her son, I am BEGGING people to quit it with that bullshit. Being weirded out is not "admiting" there are feelings there. Stop it. Sometimes people are shy, sometimes they just genuinely don't like each other that way. Stop projecting.
(Also the only correct ways to do the mistaken for a couple thing is with the characters either just rolling with it "to avoid explaining" or to one of them to exaggerate on the awkwad denial and accidentally offend/upset the other, like it happened with Kataang in Cave Of Two Lovers)
"I don't remember any scene of Zuko or Katara fighting side by side with their sibling like they did with each other"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also if we're talking side-by-side fighting stance that screams romantic symbolism, let's be fucking serious here. The dragons literally make a heart.
Tumblr media
"You can only want to see embarrassing/cute baby pictures of your friend if you want to date them, and siblings totally don't use old childhood photos to annoying each other"
Are you fucking kidding me?
"Co-parenting"
Fuck off, they're children. Traumatized children. ALL of them. They've all done stupid shit, and they've all been exasperated by their friends' doing dumb shit. Found family doesn't mean we NEED one or more characters to play the "parent" role.
Katara actively resents the idea of being seen more as parent than as a friend, and Zuko JUST discovered the revolutionary concept of "Wait, a father burning his child's face is NOT normal????" Co-parenting my ass.
"Bed/bison sharing. Very unsibling like"
Katara literally shares the bed/Appa with Sokka during the entire Blue Spirit episode. And like this person pointed out themselves, the Gaang shares "a bed" and sleep next to each other all the time. Be thrilled that your OTP is having a moment that you could re-imagine as romantic, but let's not pretend any kind of intimacy MUST be sexual/romantic in nature.
"The scene of Katara comforting Zuko has parallels with his first scene with Mai at the start of the season"
This one was totally okay until the bullshit of "Mai's kiss and hug didn't help Zuko feel better at all and after this he shuts her out." During all of Nightmares And Daydreams we see him cuddling with her, Mai trying to cheer him up, and him even confessing his inner-turmoil about having to essentially put on an act to please Ozai.
She grew a lot as a character and Zuko didn't take her joke in that first episode to heart. He is doing the exact opposite of shutting her out, he actively turns to her for comfort.
"The physical distance between them shrunk"
Yes, and? Seriously, what about it? Is there a line missing here? Am I not seeing something? WHAT IS GOING ON?
"The lightning to the heart feels like a romantic scene"
I was gonna let it slide, like I was doing with all the others "This could work for a romantic relationship, but it's not inherently romantic", but that last line I just can't stand by. DRAMA IS NOT THE SAME AS ROMANCE.
"The simmilar scene for a canon ship doesn't have the same focus on the hands as this one does"
Hand-close ups are exclusive to married people, it is known *rolls eyes*
"It looks like they're about to kiss"
Bruh, what? Looking up at someone who is looking down at you is like leaning in for a kiss?
"Many of these scenes (not the ship-baiting ones obviously) could have been written, framed, animated in a purely platonic way, giving it more of a playful sibling vibe, but the creators deliberately chose overtly romantic or at least ambiguous tones"

Thinking about Aang and The Awakening and just, the tragedy of his behavior in that episode. Like, when I watch it I just think back to season one, The Storm where, yeah, at first when he was just having nightmares he didn't want to talk about but he still eventually opened up and actually talked through his pain. That willingness is just completely gone by the Awakening.
He learns he's been in a coma for two weeks and grew hair, and then immediately accepts the distraction as Hakoda comes up and even asks after Katara. No mention again of the coma even though learning about it clearly horrified him a little bit (and of course it would, after also falling into basically a coma for 100 years and waking up to everyone he knew dead).
He has a literal flashback and just comments on Katara's healing. Apon having a second one, to which he remembers literally dying for a little bit, he turns around and makes it about Katara's healing again, supporting her when she tries to downplay what she did.
And the look of sheer horror on his face when Sokka says the world thinks he's dead, which just brings back the same problems he had during The Storm, undoing any progress he made in the self-forgiveness thing. He has a minor freak out but then focuses on the fact that they won't allow him to fight the other ship. (They won't allow him the distraction, the ability to use his job as the avatar to run from internal problems.)
And then the scene that really gets me, his talk with Katara. Here he actually does talk about it, he admits verbally the thoughts that are torturing him, but in direct contrast to The Storm, every attempt from Katara to console him is rejected, to the point where he literally asks her to just leave. Katara, the one he's always been the most open with, the one that tries to help the most, and he turns her away.
The end, where he admits defeat, all he does is acquiesce to Sokka's plan, you know, the thing that horrified him the most out of everything he learned. He burns the staff and says it's to hide his identity (as though they don't have a giant fucking bison and could just leave the staff with Appa) and sometimes I can't help but read that scene as self-punishment. He feels he's failed the world, and to attone for that, he needs to hide his identity, to essentially sacrifice it, so he burns the staff.
This episode hurts so much. My only boon is that the next episode is The Headband where he gets to be happy and careless for a bit.

Fiery Familiarity - Part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here’s part 2! it was a lot of play by play from the episode, but i tried to make it more interesting. we’re getting into the meaty bits, hope you guys enjoy!!
words: ~1.9k
prologue | part 1 | part 3 | part 4
Tumblr media
“Hello, Zuko here.”
Like the others, you were shocked. The LAST person you expected to see here was Zuko, especially so soon after the Black Sun fiasco.
“Hey, I heard you guys flying around down there, so, I just thought I'd wait for you here.” You watch with a barely contained smile as Appa let out a roar and licked him. “I know you must be surprised to see me here.”
“Not really, since you've followed us all over the world, “ Sokka sneered.
“Right. Well, uh…” You could see the hesitation on his face as he took a breath to prepare himself. “Anyway, what I wanted to tell you about is that I've changed, and I, uh, I'm good now, and well I think I should join your group, oh, and I can teach firebending…” Zuko met Aang eyes, “to you.”
You could see Aang's posture relax slightly, his grip on his staff loosening as Momo chittered softly.
Zuko started, “See, I, uh-”
“You wanna *what* now?” Toph asked incredulously.
“You can’t possibly think that any of us would trust you, can you?” Katara furrowed her brows as she continued, “I mean, how stupid do you think we are?!”
Sokka chimed in, “Yeah, all you’ve ever done is try to hunt us down and capture Aang!”
You piped up, trying to diffuse some of the rising tension. “Everybody, please, just calm down-”
“I've done some good things! I mean, I could have stolen your bison in Ba Sing Se, but I set him free. That's something!” He gestured to Appa before giving an awkward shrug. You watched his eyes widen slightly as Appa licked up his back once more.
“Appa does seem to like him,” Toph said, her tone significantly softer this time around.
“He probably just covered himself in honey or something so that Appa would lick him. I'm not buying it.” Sokka made a show of gesturing along with his obvious disdain for the prince.
Zuko took a breath before beginning again, “I can understand why you wouldn’t trust me, and I know I’ve made some mistakes in the past.” You could tell from the look in his eyes that he meant it. The way he looked to the side, ashamed of his past actions.
Your breath hitched as Sokka raised his voice. “Like when you attacked our village?”
“Or when you stole my mother's necklace and used it to track us down and capture us?”
“Look, I admit I've some awful things.” He buried a hand in his hair as he continued, “I was wrong to try to capture you, and I'm sorry that I attacked the Water Tribe. And I never should have sent that Fire Nation assassin after you.” You could see Toph and Sokka’s posture change as Zuko continued, “I'm going to try and stop-”
Your eyes widened, “that was you?”
Sokka pulled out his boomerang, ready to attack, “Wait, you sent Combustion Man after us?!”
Zuko’s hand fell as he looked up, a look in his eyes you couldn’t quite place. “Well, that's not his name, but-”
“Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to insult your friend.” Sokka’s voice was laced with angry sarcasm.
Zuko’s fiery temper set in as he raised his voice angrily, “He’s not my friend!”
Toph pointed accusingly, “That guy locked me and Katara in jail and tried to blow us all up!”
Zuko closed his eyes as he composed himself before looking at Aang. “Why aren't you saying anything? You once said you thought we could be friends.” You could hear the quiet desperation buried in his words. “You know I have good in me.”
Aang looked to the rest of you, and the hope in your eyes dulled as Sokka shook his head. Aang’s expression turned harsh before he replied. “There's no way we can trust you after everything you've done. We'll never let you join us.”
You couldn’t help but gasp softly as you watched Zuko’s face fall, “Aang-”
“You need to get out of here. Now.”
Zuko’s face contorted as he tried to speak once more, “I’m trying to explain that I'm not that person anymore!” He took a few steps forward, desperate to plead his case.
Sokka positioned his boomerang, “Either you leave or we attack.”
“If you won't accept me as a friend, then maybe you'll take me as a prisoner.” Zuko fell onto his knees, raising his hands in surrender to be cuffed.
Katara shifted, getting ready to bend, “No, we won’t!”
“Katara, no!” You yelped in vain, helpless as she hit him with a blast of water. You took a step, reaching towards him as he grunted in pain.
“Get out of here, and don't come back! And if we ever see you again,” she stomped as Sokka stepped forward threateningly, “well, we'd better not see you again!”
Zuko’s wide-eyed expression changed to one of resignation as he lifted himself up and walked off.
You stood at Toph’s side as the others gathered their things and stalked off, grumbling angrily about the situation.
“Why would he try to fool us like that?” Katara asked.
Sokka piped up, “Obviously he wants to lead us into some kind of trap.”
Katara sighs, “This is just like when we were in prison together at Ba Sing Se. He starts talking about his mother and making it seem like he's an actual human being with feelings.”
You could feel your face fall at the mention of Ursa, “Katara, you don’t know that he was lying about his mother.”
Sokka shot you a glare, “He wants you to trust and feel sorry for him so you let your guard down, then he strikes.” Sokka motioned out a jab.
She knelt as she set her belongings down, “The thing is… It worked. I did feel sorry for him. I felt like he was really confused and hurt.” She paused for a moment, getting up, “but obviously, when the time came, he made his choice, and we paid the price.” She looked down, brow furrowing. “We can't trust him.”
You leaned into Toph, just enough that she gave you a questioning look before Aang caught your attention.
“I kind of have a confession to make. Remember when you two were sick and I got captured by Zhao?”
You listened as Sokka and Katara bickered about frogs and warts, in true sibling fashion. Thankfully, Aang cut them off once more. “Anyway, when Zhao had me chained up, it was Zuko who came in and got me out. He risked his life to save me.”
You could tell the confession only managed to rile Katara up more, crossing her arms as she ranted. “No way. I'm sure he only did it so he could capture you himself!”
Sokka jumped in once more, “Yeah, face it Aang, you're nothing but a big prize to him.”
Aang’s face fell slightly as he sighed, “You're probably right.”
Katara’s arms shifted, fists clenched at her sides, “And what was all that crazy stuff about setting Appa free? What a liar!”
Toph finally spoke up, “Actually, he wasn’t lying.”
You inhaled sharply, watching her with laser focus. You had almost forgotten about her ability to sense lies.
“Oh, hooray! In a lifetime of evil, at least he didn't add animal cruelty to the list.” You almost scoffed at the sarcastic venom in Sokka’s voice.
Toph sighed, “I'm just saying that considering his messed-up family and how he was raised, he could have turned out a lot worse.”
“You're right, Toph! Let's go find him and give him a medal. The "not as much of a jerk as you could have been" award!”
Your eyes narrowed as you looked at Katara, “that’s not fair and you know it Katara.”
“All I know is that while he was talking to us, he was sincere. Maybe you're all just letting your hurt feelings keep you from thinking clearly.”
Toph made a good point. However, you couldn’t help but wonder if your own feelings toward him were clouding your judgment as well.
Aang and Sokka turned to face you two as Katara continued, “Easy for you to say! You weren't there when he had us attacked by pirates!”
“Or when he burned down Kyoshi Island!”
“Or when he tried to capture me at the Fire Temple!”
Katara stomps like a petulant child, “Why would you guys even try to defend him?”
Toph stalks forward angrily, “Because Katara, you're all ignoring one crucial fact,” she pokes at Aang’s chest, “Aang needs a firebending teacher! We can't think of a single person in the world to do the job! Now one shows up on a silver platter, and you won't even think about it?” The ground rumbles as Toph stomps out her point.
You walk up and place a hand on her shoulder in a show of support, staring them down with her. “I’m not saying what he’s been through justifies his actions, but Toph is right. Right now, he’s the only chance we’ve got.”
Katara seems to contemplate this, looking down before Aang speaks. “I’m not having Zuko as my teacher.”
“You’re darn right you’re not, buddy.” Sokka glares at the two of you.
Katara crosses her arms again, “Well, I guess that settles that.”
Toph growls, shrugging off your hand as she turns, calling out to them before she stomps off. “I'm beginning to wonder who's really the blind one around here!”
You give one last look to the others before following her.
“So, what’s the plan Toph?”
She glares, “what are you talking about?”
You give a sly grin, “well if I know you, and I do, you’ve got a plan. I want in.”
Toph gives you a smirk before explaining.
When night fell, you and Toph snuck away to the ground above the Air Temple. You knew Zuko had to be camping close, and your suspicions were confirmed when you saw the distant flickering of a campfire. You walked with Toph closer to the camp, slowing when you heard an alarmed Zuko.
“Who's there? Stay back!”
“It’s me!” Toph cried, throwing up an earth shield as Zuko sent out a panicked fire blast. Your eyes widened, trying to reach and push Toph forward before she tipped back. You were a second too late, catching her as she fell.
She yelped in pain, “You burned my feet!”
You watched his eyes widen as he got up, “I’m sorry, It was a mistake!”
You helped Toph as she scrambled away, desperately throwing earth to defend herself. Zuko dodged desperately, “Let me help you! I'm sorry!” He reached forward, grabbing her shoulder.
“Get off me! Get off me!” She managed to elbow him away, throwing up an earth pillar to knock him away.
He tumbled to the ground with a grunt, pushing himself up onto his elbows. His eyes were wide as he cried, “I didn’t know it was you!” He grabbed his side, groaning, “Come back!”
You met his eyes, a mix of worry and pity crossing your face as you helped Toph shuffle away. You could see the desperate look he threw your way, and your heart ached to put a smile on his face. He reached out, but you knew you had to help Toph. You turned away, trying to catch up to her.
“Ugh! Why am I so bad at being good?!”
You felt your heart shatter at the pure frustration and sadness in his voice. You couldn’t help but think that even with all he’d done, he was still just a scared boy trying to figure out his place in the world. You just wished the others could see that too.

cento between the ending and the end
masterlist | ao3
summary: you leave home, desperate to escape the disillusionment. then you meet the avatar. (the rest is history.)
pairing: zuko x fire nation!reader
warning(s): mentions of canon-typical violence i guess?
word count: 2.65k
a/n: this is based off of cameron-awkward rich’s poem “cento between the ending and the end.” it made me think of atla so that’s what this is.
Tumblr media
sometimes you don’t die
when you’re supposed to
Chey runs into the camp with his face flushed, his chest heaving, and his eyes burning bright. He’s beaming as he rushes over to where you and Jeong Jeong sit at opposite sides of a Pai Sho board, your mentor’s eagle eyes fixed on the game as he mulls over his options for his next move. He’s grinning as he slams his hands on the table, rattling the Pai Sho tiles and startling you out of your stupor, but failing to disturb Jeong Jeong’s unperturbed state. He’s glowing as he glances back and forth between the two of you with excitement and insuppressible hope—something you haven’t seen (or felt) in a long time. Then four words tumble out of his mouth and you understand why. The Avatar has returned. The gaping hole in your chest shivers and golden eyes light up in the back of your mind—angry, determined, ablaze.
and now i have a choice
(“Do you think he knows?” you ask as Jeong Jeong reaches out to move one of his Pai Sho tiles. “About the Avatar, I mean.” “I think that you don’t need me to answer that question for you and that you won’t figure it out by staying here,” he replies, sage and resolute. “But, let us finish this game first. I have a feeling that I am about to win.” You don’t miss the twinkle in his eye as he places the white lotus tile onto the board—in the center spot—with a soft click.)
repair a world or build
a new one inside my body
He’s standing in the middle of a tiny Earth Kingdom village, clutching an outdated and worn-out map while squinting at and attempting to decipher jumbled scribbles of names of towns and landmarks, when you accidentally bump into him. Tall, tan, topknot, toothy grin. He asks you if there are any towns nearby where he can stock up on food and supplies. You grin back. His name is Sokka from the South Pole, good with directions—when he has a proper map—and great with plans. And a nonbender, but decent with a sword and a master with the boomerang. (“Hold on, a boomerang?” you ask, one eyebrow raised as he pulls out the polished weapon from the sheath on his back, the shiny metal glinting in the sun. “Yeah, is there something wrong with that?” he counters. “No, not really,” you reply, watching as he flips it lightly into the air and as it lands neatly back in his palm. “I’ve just never met anyone who uses a boomerang as a weapon.” He laughs, “Well, I guess that makes me one of a kind, baby.”) Sokka is all sharp angles—outgoing and sarcastic, letting out a loud whoop and clapping you on the shoulder when you flash the blade of a dagger and admit that you don’t bend either. He’s boisterous at times and you quickly learn that his infectious laugh is a common occurrence, paying no attention to the slight hitch in his breath that precedes each fit of hysterics. Later, as you lead him to a bustling harbor town nearby, he introduces you to his little band of travelers. Katara. Smooth lines to complement her brother’s cacophonous nature—kind eyes and a soft smile, long hair braided down her back, calm but resolute—and a waterbender. She’s approachable and easy to talk to, immediately welcoming and easy to befriend. Yet, Katara can be sharp when she wants to be. You take note as she hurls witty insults at Sokka’s navigation skills. Appa and Momo. A flying bison and a winged lemur, two creatures you’ve only ever read about in the dusty books in your father’s library. Momo chitters and flies around you a few times out of curiosity before returning to circle Appa’s head. The bison grunts in your direction and continues to amble forward. And Aang. The Avatar. Wide-eyed, grinning, full of hope. So much so that you feel like you’re dreaming.
a white door opens
As soon as the town comes into sight, Aang and Katara rush ahead—Momo, too—eager to visit the shops and market stalls. Sokka stays behind with you and Appa. He’s quiet for a moment, then the question tumbles out of his mouth. You’re from the Fire Nation, aren’t you? You should have seen it coming from miles away.
into a place queerly brimming
(“It’s been nearly two years since I left. Most of the time, I find myself not wanting to go back.” “But it’s still home,” Sokka adds. “Yeah,” you sigh and swallow the lump in your throat. “It’s still home.”)
gold light so velvet-gold
It’s unexpected, but so sincere. Why don’t you come along with us? You can’t suppress the smile and the feeling of warmth that spreads through your body when you climb up onto Appa’s back. As the flying bison takes off into the sky, you feel the wind around you and something surging—the hole in your chest shrinking and beginning to heal.
it is like the world
hasn’t happened
You can’t push the image out of your head—Yue falling backward, her white-blonde hair pooling in the water and curling around her head like a halo. You remember the tranquility that washed over the princess’s face, the stillness in the air as she fell, and the solemnity as she sank to the bottom. Even though it’s been days, the scene is still as clear and still as haunting. To your left, Sokka laughs at one of Aang’s jokes. This time, you catch onto the slight hitch in his breath. It’s an indication—he’s lost something important and hasn’t yet forgiven himself. (You feel the same way, sometimes.) You wonder what else the war has taken from him. At night, you recall burnt skin warped around an angry eye. A startling clash of red and gold—so vivid, so noble, so hurt. Your shaking hands clutching onto his tear-stained shirt, trembling voice demanding him to come back soon. How quickly soon became a year, then two. Then three. You remember the pervading silence that followed his exile. It’s the same silence that followed Yue’s descent. The war, cruel and unforgiving, hangs overhead.
when i call out
all my friends are there
Toph Beifong is an avalanche of a girl—chaotic, strong, unable to stop once set into motion. It’s no wonder that she and Katara butt heads so quickly. But, she fits in nicely, works well with the group after she and Katara reconcile their differences, and dedicates herself to the cause. At a first glance, Toph is reckless and wild when it comes to earthbending—much like a hotheaded firebender you know. Yet, you have never seen someone push and pull at dirt and stone with as much grace and precision as the tiny blind girl. One night, after you finish describing the constellations in the sky to her, admiring them for their complexity and ineffable beauty, she shares her wisdom with you. You find something, you grab onto it, and you make it uniquely yours. Toph is the friend you always wanted and never had. One brimming with insights and always moving toward some honorable goal, but unafraid to break a few things along the way—rules, walls, bones. One who will listen intently without judging or mocking you when you have something to say—and does exactly that when you let out your pent-up resentment that had been building up for the past few years toward the values you had been raised on. One who you know you can trust. Your little band of travelers doesn’t feel so little anymore and the hole in your chest grows smaller and smaller with each passing day.
everyone we love
is still alive
His hair is grown out. It hangs messily across his forehead, let loose from the neat ponytail he used to tie it into. He looks more relaxed, less uptight, free from everything that forced him to hold his tongue, unafraid of what’s behind his back. His smile feels whole. You like him better this way. It’s a bit comical—meeting him again in a city so far from where you thought he would find comfort in, looking so different from the last time you saw him. (And working in a tea shop, something you never thought he’d ever been willing to do.) Yet, you find him standing in the middle of that small crooked building in Ba Sing Se’s Lower Ring, gracefully pouring tea into a customer’s cup before bidding them a good day and moving on to the next table. It’s no wonder that you almost don’t recognize him. But the familiarity comes flooding back the moment he pulls you into his arms after leading you out into the secluded alleyway behind the teashop. You cry into his chest. Because it’s been so long and I missed you so much. He holds you tighter. Because I’m sorry.
gathered
at the lakeside
Stepping back onto Ember Island’s shores feels surreal. Walking through the front doors of your family home, even more so. Your parents greet you warmly, ask you about your travels, fill you in on what you’ve missed. Your older brother cracks some jokes, punches your shoulder lightly, and tells you he only missed you a bit. He finds you standing on the beach that evening. Your toes buried in the sand, hands in your pockets, a contemplative look on your face. Together, you recall memories of your childhoods. Days spent sitting stiffly in stuffy classrooms with perfect posture and seemingly engaged expressions, attentively listening to lectures about “our nation’s glory.” Hours of military and political history—Sozin, Azulon, and various generals and commanders whose names and accomplishments you could rattle off. (Names and accomplishments that you forced out of your mind the second you stepped foot off Fire Nation soil.) Evenings spent running barefoot on the beach, dancing in the salty breeze with pink clouds and a sunset in the background. Or sparring, him critiquing your skills or you showing off a new technique you learned while your feet sank into the soft sand and some noisy gulls flew overhead. Nights spent angrily whispering at him to shut up and leave you alone because, somehow, he always knew when you were awake when you weren’t supposed to be, always knew where you were hiding in your father’s library, and always knew what—or rather who—was on your mind. When you go quiet, he asks what you’re thinking about. You can’t seem to find the right words.
like constellations
(“Remember when Ruon-Jian asked you out and you responded by punching him in the face?” “Yeah,” you laugh, remembering how the boy had approached you with an atrocious pick-up line and how you had so desperately wanted to wipe the smug grin off his face. “He was an asshole.” Your brother snickers, “Good times.” You echo emptily, “Good times.”)
my honeyed kin
Ba Sing Se falls overnight. The news comes in the form of your brother bursting through the doors of your father’s library, where you’re sitting peacefully in an armchair and paging through a book about stars and other celestial objects. When you look up, you’re met with a frown, eyes wavering—strained, a little bit scared. It doesn’t take you long to figure out that there’s something wrong. A letter from Azula follows and, two days later, you’re within the concentric stone walls again. You know you should let Zuko be. Let him wallow. Give him space to mourn. But Azula smirks and lets slip the shred of knowledge that gives her the upper hand. She’s seen glimpses—sunlight glinting off the blades of your daggers, blurs of the hair ribbons you always wear. Traitor.
honeyed light
The air surrounding the top deck is cold and stiff and bitter on the ship ride home, but it’s where he is, so you stay—your head resting against his shoulder, his arm around your waist. You ask him if he finds it strange to be going home after so many years away. When he doesn’t respond, you turn your gaze up to his face and find him staring out into the distance, expression blank, mouth set in a firm line. But, his eyes look so lost and he feels so far away. The hole in your chest begins to widen again.
beneath the sky
a garden blue stalks
white buds
(Ozai raises his fist. Iroh covers your eyes. “No one should have to witness something so terrible,” he tells you afterward. Something inside you shifts out of place.)
the moon’s
marble glow
You left to chase after a boy. Azula stands with her hands on her hips, looking proud of her comment. She wants you to stand up and yell back at her, prove her wrong—and she is wrong. Azula is wrong. You left because you wanted to, because you were tired, because everything you had been told was a lie. And it wasn’t Zuko’s banishment that had shown you that. Those seeds were planted years before, nurtured over the summers you spent away from home honing your skills with shiny silver knives, watered with your sweat and incessant curiosity. (“More like nosiness,” your brother would have called it.) Soon, they sprouted, stretched their roots and tied themselves down, resisting any deweeding from indoctrination attempts during the school years. Seeing Zuko, with a bandage over his eye and his shoulders slumped and his entire being so broken only gave them more room to grow. And they grew. Tendrils curling and suffocating the sickly-sweet praises of the nation’s magnificence and grandeur (and lies). Roots digging deeper until the only thing burning through you when you thought of the nation you grew up in was resentment and hatred and every other ugly feeling that made you sick to your stomach. And so, you left. Azula is wrong. But, you’re tired of fighting her. So you smile politely, in the way you’ve been taught to. Maybe I did.
the fire
distant and flickering
The air feels drier and hotter with each passing day. It’s unsettling and sets off something within you—makes you wonder what it’s leading up to and if there’s a storm on its way. At night, when Zuko stands with you on your balcony—the two of you leaning against the railing, shoulders touching, gazing at the navy blue expanse of sky—you fall into him, searching for the comfort of his arms. Because something’s coming and I don’t think it’s good. He holds you closer. Hands gripping your waist, fingers laced tightly with yours like he’s afraid you’ll slip through the cracks and fall away from him. Because I feel it, too. You receive a small package and a letter from Piandao the next day. (“Your friend Sokka is a fine swordsman,” it reads. “He is a very good student, asks a lot of questions, and is somewhat unconventional. He reminded me a bit of you.”) Something at the bottom of the letter, scribbled in the corner, catches your eye. He’s alive. You open up the package and a Pai Sho tile falls into your palm, the white lotus engraved on its face.
the body whole bright-
winged brimming
Toph and Sokka and Suki and you. (And Katara and Zuko and Aang. Where are they?) Red. Glaring brightness. Body sore. On the verge of breaking. A ringing in your ears. The smell of something burning. You can’t remember anything else.
with the hours
of the day
(Funnily enough, you’ve never felt more whole.)
beautiful
nameless planet
Afterward, he kisses you hard. Urgent, but sweet, arms wrapping tightly around your waist. Because I don’t know what I would’ve done if I didn’t make it out with you by my side. You kiss him back. Soft and delicate, hands resting against his chest. Because I love you, too.
oh
friends, my friends—
bloom how you must, wild
until we are free.

I lied to you, bwahahaha!
I keep thinking about tSR (from Aang's perspective this time though)
And when I think, I type in my notes, simple as that.
You know, another component people (me including) kinda tend to overlook about this episode is that Aang didn't just argue with Katara and Zuko about their morals.
He was put by Katara into the position to argue because she suddenly went to him and asked to borrow Appa for their revenge trip. And after Aang refused, they decided to take him anyway.
And... It wasn't a right thing to do. At all.
Katara's right to revenge in general is one issue (which I'm not going to discuss here).
But they had no right of using Aang's personal animal companion to commit something Aang openly disapproved, no matter how upset his refusal made them.
It would make Aang their unwilling accomplice, and besides - for him, it wasn't just like giving them his vehicle to commit crimes (which would be bad in itself): it'd feel like letting them to kinda corrupt his unintelligent friend and put him into unnecessary danger, I suppose.
(Not to mention the unnecessary danger for Aang's intelligent friends!)
I saw some people criticizing Aang for not respecting Katara's moral beliefs in this situation, but... It's Katara who went to Aang with her request for his cooperation, not the other way around. Hence, it's Katara who first implicitly asked from him to discard his pacifistic values for her sake. Basically, she suddenly (really suddenly, if you think about it from Aang's perspective) put him into a "It's me or your morals now, Aang? Choose wisely!" situation, and when he wasn't eager to give her the answer she wanted on the spot, she resented him and just turned to leave ("I knew you wouldn't understand"). To treat your close friend in such a way is pretty unfair, no matter how much you're hurting at the moment. And of course Aang felt the need to explain his views to Katara after this - because he valued their friendship and was concerned for her.
(I'm not stating here that Aang's behaviour was perfect, or that his relationship with Katara in general couldn't benefit from him being more attentive to her feelings and values. That's not my point. I'm just trying to explain Aang's exact position here.)
And after that, Katara and Zuko treat Aang as if he's not their friend anymore or something. As if he's some equivalent of a pirate, and to steal something that belongs to him is a right thing to do just because they want.
Aang was actually extremely understanding and (yes) forgiving in this conflict. Zuko had no right to be so dismissive and sarcastic when you look at the situation from this angle.
I mean, hello Zuko, it's Aang's beloved bison you're stealing here for your risky, non-urgent and morally problematic mission that can psychologically harm Aang's beloved girl as well? And he isn't even angry at you for this? You could be a little more grateful, you know.
(Do you value Aang's friendship at all, Zuko, or your heart can accommodate only one important person for you at any given moment, eh?)
Again, I'm trying to be objective here. From Katara's or Zuko's perspective, the situation looks completely different (with a big neon 'lost mothers trauma' sign all over it). But this post is not about their perspective.
Something like this.
(I can always change my mind on the topic after noticing some new facts though, you know. My opinion on anything isn't set in stone. It can be such a bummer sometimes, haha. I keep ignoring my notifications, anyway.)

Before anyone else, I give my secrets to Appa, not in words so much as in the way I can lean all my weight into the pillow of his course fur when disappointment lowers me, before I know exactly what it is that’s disappointing me, and he closes his eyes and tilts his head toward me; or the way he acquiesces when I need to fly away with him because I’ve gotten tired of trying to explain the memories that no one else has and what feelings they stir up. Appa has them, too, I think, and neither of us have words enough to share them.
Momo’s skitterings eventually bring me out of those lonely valleys. And Appa stays there, eating the fresh tall grass from whatever new clearing or hillside we have found ourselves in, and listens to me working out how to be at peace with a world that wants me as an icon or dead or how to end a relationship with my best friend without losing the person I trust most. His animal solicitude gives me the same answers I discover when I go back: that the universe is busy rendering its own solutions, settling its own scores with me as only one half of the equations I’m related to. People settle down and move on. The dissolution of my affections aren’t the only dissolutions happening, and Katara is ready for a return to friendship, too, without me, in my paranoia, realizing it.
Some other secrets Appa protects with his horns and strength and steadfastness, secrets I can’t bear to face yet, in the shapes of and tender as scars and the rare smiles that make you forget about them. It was the first time his laughter erupted. He snorted. I asked for some dish from the court chef. How was I supposed to know everything that had become an innuendo since I had been there? He cracked open like a sunrise. It sounded uncouth and daffy, and melted me.
That night, the tidal pools left behind from the warmth I felt for him were too lively and painful. When I went to Appa in the courtyard, his bison eyes seemed to have been prepared, like he knew my heart before I did, and predicted that I would need to escape to the meadow on the nearby isle, isolated by its wind-carved cliffsides, to cry.  Then, he could take me back and we could both pretend I’d been beneath the royal satin sheets the whole night with a heart that didn’t betray itself, and Appa wouldn’t let anyone here hurt me for things I couldn’t help to feel, despite their laws and customs, and he wouldn’t say anything to crush the friendship I had made, no matter how much I sometimes wish he would.

Yin and Yang: Book 1.10
Tumblr media
Balance is a key aspect in the world, so why shouldn’t the Avatar have an opposite?
In a world where Raava and Vaatu merge with humans, the Avatar and the Daimon try to keep the peace between the four nations.
Aang and Hua are the current incarnations, but wake up 100 years in the future.
How will these two learn all four elements in one year and defeat the Fire Lord?
Tumblr media
Who is Veda? You can read the story, and you will know if you want to see her look at my Deviantart Account. ^^
Book 1.10: Jet and Veda
Water.
Earth.
Fire.
Air.
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony.
Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.
Only the Avatar and Daimon, masters of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed them most, they vanished.
A hundred years passed, and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar and Daimon, an airbender named Aang and an earthbender named Hua.
And although his airbending and her earthbending skills are great they have a lot to learn before they’re ready to save anyone.
But I believe Aang and Hua can save the world.
Tumblr media
After a nice breakfast, it was time for team Avatar-Daimon to hit the road again.
Only someone was missing…
“Where's Momo?”, asked Aang his friends, hoping they had seen where the lemur had flown off.
It was like he heard them since Momo’s screeches echoed through the forest.
“Jaiyi, girl, find Momo!”, command Hua her ninetails.
Not wasting time Jaiyi did as she was told, finding Momo's smell and leading the humans.
They found the poor lemur and two hog monkeys in cage traps hanging by rope on tree limbs.
Aang uses his airbending to fly to the top of the tree, jumping from trunk to trunk to get higher. He finds the traps' mechanisms, undoes them, and carefully lowers Momo to the ground where Hua, Katara and Sokka are waiting. They open the trap together and the lemur runs out with one of the lychee nuts in his mouth.
The watertribe siblings and the Daimon look on as Momo gets on his hind legs and eats it as though nothing has happened.
Jaiyi sist down beside him and licks his head, which makes Momo purr.
Sokka grunts in frustration and facepalms.
When Aang lands, he looks up to see the other two animals seemingly crying out to him for help.
So he jumps up to them, but Sokka say how this will take forever and just uses his boomerang to cut the hog monkey free.
While the free animals run off into the forest, Team Avatar-Daimon study the trap together.
“These are Fire Nation traps.”, concludes Sokka. “You can tell from the metalwork. We'd better pack up camp and get moving.”
They return to their camp. Gathering their things they begin to pack them onto Appa's saddle.
Suddenly Sokka proclaims: “Uh-uh! No flying this time.”
The others are confused.
“What? Why wouldn't we fly?”, wonders Aang.
“Think about it: Somehow Prince Zuko and the Fire Nation keep finding us. It's because they spot Appa, he's just too noticeable.”
“What? Appa's not too noticeable!”, comes Katara to the bison defense.
“He's a gigantic fluffy monster with an arrow on his head! It's kinda hard to miss him!”
Appa seems offended, which makes Aang coo at him how Sokka was just jealous he doesn’t have an arrow.
“Well, then we can all ride on Jaiyi. Four humans and our supplies are nothing for her.”, offers Hua, as her Kyuubi yips in agreement.
But Sokka shakes his head.
“No, same problem with Appa. When Jaiyi is in her big form you can’t miss her, when she is little you could confuse her for a normal fox cub…I mean till you see the tails.”
This makes everyone deadpan at Sokka. He really doesn’t want to make their journey comfortable for them.
“I know you all wanna fly or ride, but my instincts tell me we should play it safe this time and walk.”, explains Sokka.
“Instincts?”, mumbles Hua confused, while Katara leans forward to her brother: “Who made you the boss?”
“I'm not the boss, I'm the leader.”
“Since when and where was I when this was decided?”, questions Hua, getting more confused by the second.
What’s up with Sokka all of a sudden?
“I agree with Hua, you're the leader? But your voice still cracks!”, sass Katara her brother.
“I'm the oldest, and I'm a warrior!”, retorts Sokka. “So I'm the leader!”
“If anyone's are our leaders, it's Aang and Hua. I mean, he is the Avatar and she is the Daimon.”
“Are you kidding? He's just a goofy kid! And she is just a little girl.”
“I’m not that little!”, mumbles Hua angrily, while Aang proves Sokka's point hanging upside-down from Appa's right horn with feet sticking out in the air and agreeing.
“Why do boys always think someone has to be the leader?”, ponders Katara. “I bet you wouldn't be so bossy if you kissed a girl.”
This makes Hua snort, which in turn makes Sokka blush embarrassed.
Great, even the youngest laughs at him!
“I've kissed a girl, you just haven't met her.”, defends the water tribe boy his manly honour.
“Who? Gran-Gran? I've met Gran-Gran.”, roasts his sister further.
Now Hua has picked up Jaiyi and hides her laughing face in the pelt of her ninetails.
She can’t!
Katara was just too good at dishing out!
Angry Sokka throws his arms into the air. Katara's sass and Hua's laughter go on his nerves and hurt his manly ego.
“No! Besides Gran-Gran. Look, my instincts tell me we have a better chance of slipping through on foot, and a leader has to trust his instincts.”
“Okay, we'll try it your way, oh wise leader.”, says Katara sarcastically.
“Oh guide us, wise leader.”, can’t Hua help herself to add.
The girls laugh together, as Sokka sends them an offended look.
Why were girls such smart-asses?
Now Aang steps over, wearing a backpack. Momo is sitting on the top.
Always the optimist he says that walking might be fun.
Words he would soon regret.
“Walking stinks!”, decides the Avatar. “How do people go anywhere without a flying bison or a kyuubi?”
“Well I don't know, Aang.”, answer him Katara “Why don't you ask Sokka's instincts? They seem to know everything.”
“Yes, our wise leader will lead us to the holy land of the Nothern Water Tribe on foot.”, adds Hua cheeky.
Jaiyi, who walks beside her, laughs her fox laugh.
“Ha ha, very funny, guys.”, deadpans Sokka.
Ungrateful brats! He was just looking out for them and this was the thanks?!
“I'm tired of carrying this pack.”, complains the Avatar.
“You know who you should ask to carry it for a while?”, begins Katara.
“Oh, oh, let me guess!”, calls Hua, raising her hand like in school. “Sokka’s instincts?”
“Right on, Hua!”
“That's a great idea.”, agrees Aang. “Hey, Sokka's instincts, would you mind–”
Annoyed Sokka calls out: “Okay, okay, I get it! Look, guys, I'm tired too. But the important thing is that we're safe from the Fire ... Nation.”
He trails off because they stepped right into a big camp of Fire Nations Soldiers.
“Sokka, your instincts, suck!”, hisses Hua.
The oldest tells them all to run, but a Fire Nation soldier blocks them off by setting the bushes behind them on fire.
The four go into battle positions.
Seems like the only way to get out of this mess was by fighting.
“If you let us pass, we promise not to hurt you.”, tells Sokka the soldiers with fake bravado.
His sister asked what he was doing and admitted he was just bluffing.
A Firebender with an eyepatch laughs at them.
“You, promise not to hurt us?”
A whooshing sound was heard and the soldier was knocked out by an unseen tranquillizer dart on his back.
“Nice work, Sokka!”, praises Aang. “How'd you do that?”
“Uh, instinct?”
That’s when Katara draws their attention to a nearby tree. On it, a young man tosses his blowpipe and unsheathes two hook swords. He jumps and takes down two soldiers on landing. He runs forward and takes down two more using his hook swords.
“Down you go.”
Katara looks amazed, Hua admiring, Aang shocked, and Sokka confused.
Another soldier charges at Jet, but he is defeated. Then a soldier points out how more people are in the tree, but it’s too late.
A young boy lands on top of the soldier and turns his helmet around to blind him, before riding him around while laughing. Another boy launches arrows at the soldiers while more boys and girls come out of the trees.
Hua, Aang and Katara aid them in fighting the soldiers with their primary bendings.
Sokka holds up his boomerang and yells as one approaches him, but stops when the young man with the hook swords takes him down first.
The watertribe boy bemoans that he was his, but the young man just says he has to be faster next time.
Sokka looks dismayed and a huge boy falls out of the trees and easily takes down two soldiers as the hook sword boy skilfully takes down one more, causing this soldier's spear to hit another soldier, who was going to battle Sokka, in the head, making that soldier also fall down.
Again no points for Sokka.
Currently, Hua was launching rocks at two soldiers, as she felt that someone was approaching.
Another Soldier!
Before she can react, a pretty girl, not older than herself, attacks the soldier with her whip. She bonds him in it and throws him against a tree, knocking him out cold.
The Daimon's mouth claps open and a hot blush forms on her cheeks.
This was one of the hottest things she had ever seen!
She feels all tingly inside, it only gets worse as the pretty girls walk over to her.
“Hi.”, the pretty girl greets. She has beautiful grey eyes, and mid-length black hair and wears a green kimono-styled top with bandages, brown pants and black boots.
Tumblr media
“Hello.”, croaks Hua nervous out.
“Your earthbending is amazing.”, praises her pretty girl. “I’m Veda and who are you cutie?”
Being called cutie by this beautiful Veda makes Hua's brain short-circuit.
The last time she felt this way was 100 years ago when she had a crush on her neighbor Ai. The one who had also stolen her first kiss.
So she does something, which will make her wish to die on the spot.
Babbling nonsense.
“Me, me, Hua, I mean-I’m Hua. Hua, like, like flower. Only flower, just flower not any specific kind of flower, I don’t know why my parents didn’t specify. Sakura or Sayuri would have been nice, they are specify flowers. You know? Sakura is cherry blossom and Sayuri Lily. But, but, I think you know that…”
Amused Veda wipes away some ash from her cheek and Hua swerves she will melt.
“You are a cutie pie, Hua. Don’t be nervous, I don’t bite…unless you want me to.”
Then Veda winks.
And Hua makes a sound like a dying whale.
Oh Spirits, kill her now!
“Veda, are you done flirting?”, calls over the hook sword boy, who was standing beside an equally besotted Katara.
“Sure, Jet.”, calls Veda back, but stays beside Hua, winking at her again.
The now-known Jet shakes bemused his head and then starts to introduce himself and his friends: “My name is Jet, and these are my Freedom Fighters. Sneers, Longshot, Smellerbee, Veda, The Duke, and Pipsqueak.”
The Daimon has trouble following along with how Aang tells Pipsqueak how his name is funny, only to be revealed that the biggest boy was named so and not the little one. It seems like Aang will get hit, but Pipssqueak laughs and pats him friendly on the back though the hit is hard enough to knock Aang flat on the ground.
The Duke stops laughing and looks down at Aang sprawled on the ground before his feet, face flat in the dirt, though when Aang raises his head and continues laughing, so does The Duke.
The Freedom Fighters ransack the camp, while Sokka looks on a little uncomfortable.
Katara thanks Jet for his help and Hua and Veda are talking with each other.
Well, Veda talks and Hua babbles nonsense, however, the other girl doesn’t seem to mind.
Aang watches how both his female friends seem cosy with their new friends and…well…he feels strangely strange.
Does it make sense?
Seeing Katara with Jet was not making him feel funny, but Hua and Veda made his stomach twist.
He didn’t get it.
What was up with him?
Why was there a voice in his head, who practically growled mine, stay away.
Aang doesn’t have this kind of feeling for Hua, they were friends, also he liked Katara.
But this strange voice in him or let’s say a thousand voices in him hissed and snarled.
Mine!
Soulmate!
My Yang!
Stay away from them!
To think he shakes fast his head. This was all so confusing.
Were these voices of his past lives, where he and Hua were couples?
It made the most sense.
Nonetheless, he never reacted like that…
Maybe because someone was showing interest in Hua and he saw it?
And his past lives didn’t like that?
Well, he would ignore it!
He liked Katara, he knew she was his forever girl, and his past lives should get used to the Daimon having another partner.
There!
That’s when Aang hears how The Duke tells Jet how they will bring the things from the ransacked camp to their hide-out.
So his little episode was forgotten as he asked excitedly if they had a hideout.
Jet offers them to show it and both Katara and Hua yell how they want to see it.
So they follow the Freedom Fighter for a while through the forest, till they stop.
“We're here.”, proclaims Jet.
Confused Sokka says that nothing is there, so Jet gives him a rope and the watertribe boy pulled up into the branches.
Jet offers one to Aang, but he uses his airbending to climb the tree.
“Now you Hua.”, calls her Jet.
A bit nervous the Daimon steps forward, as she feels a hand on her shoulder.
Veda.
“The first time can be a bit wild, want to travel with me?”, she asked with a pretty smile.
Not trusting her voice, Hua nods.
So Veda wraps an arm around her hips, while Hua wraps her arms around the other girl's shoulder, as the Freedom Fighter girl grips the rope.
They get pulled up and all seems to go in slow motion.
Romantic light shines down on them, making Veda look like a goddess, which turns Hua into a pepperoni.
When she feels Veda's hand and where she is holding on, Hua swerves it burning her.
She never wants to let go of the other girl.
Sadly they land on a wooden platform.
For a second Hua admired the awesome hideout of the Freedom Fighter, which was a couple of treehouses, connected with zip lines as Veda whispered in her air: “Hey, you wanna ditch the other till dinner? I want to show you my favourite place.”
Butterflies are in Hua's stomach and she nods in agreement.
Giving her a pretty smile Veda takes her hand, Hua may or not may make again a dying whale sound, and leads her to her favourite place.
On the way there they talk.
Veda tells her how she came to the Freedom Fighter. She and Jet were neighbour, as one day the Fire Nation burned down the village, killing their parents. She would be dead too, if Jet hadn’t saved her that night.
He was eight and she was six.
“I’m so sorry, Veda.”, tells her Hua, squeezing her hand. “I wish I could do more to help you with your pain.”
“It’s okay Hua. Even if I miss my family I have a new family in Jet and the Freedom Fighter. Jet is like my big brother, I would do anything for him.”
Suddenly Hua Daimon-Radar goes off. How Veda said she would do anything for Jet…it has a dark note in it.
Hua can’t think anymore as Veda leads her to a platform, from where you can see all the forest.
“It’s so beautiful!”, shouts Hua.
“I love it here.”, confesses Veda, sitting down. “You can see anything from her and when the stars are out it's quite romantic.”
This makes Hua blush again, as she sits down beside Veda. The other girl grips her hand caressing it.
“It’s even better when you share it with someone.”, whispered the Freedom Fighter in her ear, making Hua shiver.
Then she feels a little kiss on her cheek.
Surprised she gasp and looks with wide eyes at Veda.
The other girl has a cheeky smile, which makes Hua's stomach do somersaults.
“I know we just met, but you are so sweet Hua, I could eat you up.”
“Then do it.”, whispers Hua back, she feels the attraction too and wants to bathe in it.
With another grin, Veda kisses her on the mouth.
And for a long time, both girls don’t say anything, getting lost in each other.
***
It’s now dinner time in the Freedom Fighter hide-out.
Hua sits beside Veda and Katara as she enjoys her meal with her friends, new friends and…girlfriend?
She and Veda didn’t really specify what they were after their romantic escape, they just enjoyed each other.
Maybe they didn’t need a label.
Just being together was nice.
For however long it may be.
Jet stands on the table raising his glass and starts his speech: “Today, we struck another blow against the Fire Nation swine.”
Everyone cheers.
Katara, Hua and Aang smile while Sokka cops an attitude and a scowling face.
“I got a special joy from the look on one soldier's face when The Duke dropped down on his helmet and rode him like a wild hog monkey.”
The Duke, without his helmet, climbs up the table. He marches on the table with his arms in the air.
“Now, the Fire Nation thinks they don't have to worry about a couple of kids hiding in the trees. Maybe they're right.”
A very loud and long boo is heard all around.
“Or maybe ... they're dead wrong.”
Loud and long cheering happens.
“Hey, Jet, nice speech.”, praise Katara with twinkling eyes.
“Thanks.”, says Jet as he sits down beside her. “By the way, I was really impressed with you, Hua and Aang. That was some great bending I saw out there today.”
“Well, they are great. He's the Avatar and she’s the Daimon. I could use some more training.”, admins Katara blushing.
“Avatar, Daimon huh? Very nice.”
“Thanks, Jet.”, chorus Aang and Hua together.
“So I might know a way that you, Hua and Aang can help in our struggle.”
That’s when Sokka states: “Unfortunately, we have to leave tonight.”
Both Katara and Hua looked devastated, they didn’t want to leave Jet and Veda already and Aang pounts, he liked it here!
Fortunately for them, Jet has a mission for Sokka, which makes him curious.
They will stay another day.
Puh, thank the spirits.
After dinner and dishes were finished, Veda showed the girls of Team Avatar-Daimon where they could get cleaned up.
With a blown kiss to Hua the Freedom Fighter girl left them.
Like a besotted fool, Hua waved at her till she was away.
“Ah is someone in love?”, cooed Katara at her best friend, as she started to undress.
Hua follows her and blushes to her breast.
“Not love, but hard crushing. I love girls who can kick my ass.”, she confesses. “Also what is with you and Jet?”
With a washcloth, Katara starts to clean herself and starts blushing too.
“I like him, alright, but we only talked. That hickey on your breast tells me another story.”, says Katara with a grin.
Shocked Hua looked down and there it was.
A hickey.
Okay, she and Veda got a bit wild.
“We may have gotten carried away.”, she admins to her best friend and starts to clean herself too.
This makes Katara frown a bit.
“Hua, please don’t take this bad, but aren’t you both only twelve? I don’t think you should be doing that already.”
It takes the Daimon a second before she understands what Katara is implying. She turns crimson red.
“No, no, Katara, we didn’t do anything like that, we are just a bit handsy, Nothing more.”
“Oh.”, makes Katara the sound long and then grins cheeky. “So like did you touch her breasts or something?!”
For that Hua throws a towel at her face.
“None of your business.”
“So you did cup a feel!”
“I never knew you could be this pervy!”
“I’m not pervy, just couriers and worried for my best friend.”
Together the girls laugh and change the subject.
After they were done washing, it was time for bed.
***
The next day Katara and Hua made presents for their crushes, while they waited for them to return with Sokka from their mission.
Katara made Jet a hat and Hua made for Veda a necklace.
Aang was somewhere goofing off with The Duke if they understood correctly.
They hear how Aang talks to Sokka and little explosion.
Ah, so they probably returned.
The girls walk up to Sokka and Aang.
“Hey, Sokka.”, greets Katara. “Are Jet and Veda back?”
Her brother was sitting with his back to the trunk and staring at the ground, glaring.
Whatever happened now?
“Yeah, they’re back. But we're leaving.”, decides Sokka.
“What?”, shouts Aang disappointed.
The girls are right with him.
“But I made him this hat.”, whines Katara.
Hua whines too: “I made Veda this necklace.”
“Your boyfriend Jet and your girlfriend Veda are thugs.”, makes Sokka clear.
Of course, Katara and Hua are shocked and won’t believe it.
Sokka insists that the Freedom Fighters are messed up, while Aang takes partei for them and says to Sokka they just have a different kind of life.
“They beat and robbed a harmless old man!”, shouts Sokka angrily.
Why won’t they understand?
Stupid Jet and stupid Veda with their stupid charming personalities.
Katara and Hua felt for it, hook, line and sinker!
His sister crosses her arms and demands that they talk with Jet and Veda about it, she wants to hear their side of the story.
Meanwhile, Hua’s bad feelings about Veda from yesterday's return.
Could she really misunderstand Veda's true self?
Her Daimon-Radar had tried to warn her…but she couldn’t believe how the girl who was so sweet to her, had such a side on her.
Her stomach in a twist she followed the other to Jet cabin.
To their luck, Veda was there too.
Both seemed to talk in secret.
This didn’t help the doubt which was forming in Hua.
Not wasting time Katara asked them about the mission they had with Sokka and what happened. Did they really beat up and robbed an old man?
“Sokka, you told them what happened, but you didn't mention that the guy was Fire Nation?”, asked Jet back.
Veda stood beside him, emotionless, even as Hua tried to look into her grey eyes.
It was like the other girl closed her off.
The Daimon didn’t like it.
“No, he conveniently left that part out.”, huffed Katara at her brother.
He groaned. “Fine! But even if he was Fire Nation, he was a harmless civilian!”
“He was an assassin, Sokka.”, corrected him Jet.
The leader of the Freedom Fighter pulls out a knife and thrusts it into a nearby stump. It is a sinister-looking curved blade. There are four spikes evenly spaced along the grip, with enough space for fingers to go between them. There is a ring on the butt of the knife.
“See? There's a compartment for poison in the knife.”
He pulls on the ring and removes a small glass tube filled with red liquid.
“He was sent to eliminate me. You helped save my life, Sokka.”
Relieved Katara says she knows there was an explanation, but Sokka insists that he didn’t see a knife.
Jet rebukes that the man hid it and Katara agrees.
The watertribe boy makes clear how he was sure there was no knife and they would go now!
Dramatically he leaves Jet cabin.
“Tell me you guys aren't leaving yet.”, turns Jet to the remaining three. “I really need your help.”
Aang asks what they can do.
Jet explains how the Fire Nation plans to burn down the whole forest and them with it, however, if the three use their waterbending to fill the reservoir they could put the fire out.
“Please, you would do us a great favour.”, begs them Veda and bows.
Still, she won’t look at Hua.
She doesn’t like it.
“We will talk with Sokka and then tell you what we decide.”, the Daimon tells Jet and Veda.
She takes Katara and Aang by the hands and walks with them to their cabin.
Sokka was already packing their things.
“We can't leave now with the Fire Nation about to burn down a forest!”, was the first thing Katara said to her brother.
“I'm sorry, Katara. Jet's very smooth and his lackey like Veda do anything for him, we can't trust them.”, answered Sokka calmly.
“You know what I think? You're jealous that he's a better warrior and a better leader!”, accuses him Katara.
“Katara, I'm not jealous of Jet. It's just that my instinct–”
“Well, my instincts tell me we need to stay here a little longer and help Jet. Come on, Aang and Hua.”
The Avatar say sorry and leaves with Katara.
Hua stays a moment longer, unsure and then tells Sokka: “Find evidence.”
Surprised Sokka looks up.
“I don’t want to believe that Veda is so heartless, but my instincts, my Daimon ones are haywire, but without proof, it’s only a feeling. So look for one. I hope you are wrong though, I really like Veda.”
With that, she follows after Katara and Aang.
***
The next day Jet leads the three benders to the damn upriver along its west bank. Geysires are everywhere.
“Jet, I'm sorry about how Sokka's been acting.”, apologies Katara.
“No worries, he already apologized.”, says Jet.
This shocks the other three and they look at each other.
Sokka?
Apologizing?
“Yeah, I was surprised too.”, admins the Freedom Fighter. “I got the sense that maybe you talked to him or something.”
“Yeah, I did.”, confirms the watertribe girl.
“I guess something you said got through to him. Anyhow, he went out on a scouting mission with Pipsqueak, Veda and Smellerbee.”
“I'm glad he cooled off. He's so stubborn sometimes.”
Meanwhile, Hua can’t help but bite her lips nervous. Her Daimon-Radar was going crazy, something was wrong, but she couldn’t pinpoint what.
Also, she said to Sokka he should look for proof, maybe he found nothing and that’s why he said sorry.
Or…she doesn’t want to think about the other possibility.
They are now walking in the gully, beside the 'river'. Aang pauses after noticing something strange and is launched into the air by a blast from the geyser he is standing on.
“All right, we're here. Underground water's trying to escape through these vents. I need you guys to help it along.”, explains Jet.
Unsure Katara tells him she never benden water she can’t see and doesn’t know if she can do it.
However Jet was right behind her putting his hands on her shoulder and encouraging her.
A bit sad he was left out Aang asks what about him.
“I know the Avatar can do this, just like the Daimon.”
Jet sends Hua a smile and she has trouble copying him.
Her brain tells her to listen to her instincts, but her heart wants to believe that Jet and mostly of course Veda are good people.
With a heavy heart, she joins Aang and Katara at one of many Geysir in the gully. While Jet looks on, they bend the water up. After a few minutes, a stream of water emerges from the hole. They pull it to their height and send it toward the river where it continues to flow like a waterfall. The water quickly joins the river.
Jet congratulated them on a job well done and informed them with another few more Geysir the reservoir would be full.
Excited Aang points at the next Geysier.
The benders walk up to it, as Jet tells them he has some business to attend to and will see them later.
Katara says they would join in at the reservoir, but Jet says it’s better to meet up in the hide-out.
So he leaves them at their bending.
Since they are three waterbenders they finish pretty soon.
“I bet that's enough, and I'm not just saying that to be lazy.”, states Aang, as the three look at all the streaming water fountains.
“Let's catch up with Jet at the reservoir.”, announced Katara.
“Didn’t he say we should meet at the hide-out?”, points Hua out.
“Well, we finished early. I'm sure he'll be happy to see us.”
Well, nothing to say against it.
So they make their way over.
They reach the edge of the cliff.
At the base of the dam, they see, four of Jet's people unloading barrels from the wagon and arranging them.
“What are they doing?”, wonders Katara.
Surprised Aang notes that these are the blasting jelly barrels the Freedom Fighter got from the Fire Nation.
Before Katara can say anything Hua lets out such a dirty curse, that both she and Aang gasp surprised.
They didn’t know Hua could curse like that.
“They gonna blow up the dam!”, screams Hua, tears springing into her eyes. “Oh, why didn’t I listen to my Daimon Instincts? I felt the darkness in both Jet and Veda, I’m the worst Daimon ever!”
“No, Jet wouldn’t do it, calm down Hua.”, said Katara, wrapping an arm around the distressed girl.
“He would and he is! Katara stop lying to yourself.”
“I've gotta stop him.”, tells them Aang.
The Avatar opens his glider but before he can reach the edge, Jet crosses his path from behind and snatches the glider. Aang is left wobbling precariously on the edge and uses airbending to get himself back on stable footing.
“Yes, I would.”, confessed Jet the true.
Now Hua has to hold Katara by her shoulders.
“Jet, why?”
“Katara, you would too if you just stopped to think. Think about what the Fire Nation did to your mother. We can't let them do that to anyone else ever again.”
“This isn't the answer!”
“I want you to understand me, Katara. I thought your brother would understand, but–”
“Where's Sokka?”
Tears fall from her eyes, as Jet reaches out and touches her face.
“Katara.”
She lowers her head, and with an angry shout, sends Jet flying with the water from her waterskin. She draws it back into the skin when she's done.
Faster then he can react, Jet gets enclosed into a coffin of stone plates, only his face free.
Hua looks at him in anger, her eyes switch from her natural green to her bright orange ones in Daimon State.
“You disgust me!”, she shouts with a thousand voices. “You and Veda are terrible people who act like heroes! You would-be murderers!”
A birdcall is heard.
Katara and Aang are startled, Hua gets out of Daimon State and looks to the valley beyond where it's coming from.
Jet gives an answering birdcall.
“What are you doing?”, demands Katara to know.
“You're too late.”, the leader of the Freedom Fighter simply states.
Horrified Katara and Hua shout No.
The centre of the dam explodes in a cloud of smoke and fire.
Katara, Hua and Aang watch a massive wall of water go to the town the water rushes through the open gate, as a cresting wave dwarfs it. The wall and gate are swallowed as the wave strikes the town.
“All those people …”, cries Katara and turns full hatred towards Jet. “Jet, you monster!”
“This was a victory, Katara. Remember that. The Fire Nation is gone and this valley will be safe.”
“It will be safe, without you.”, they hear suddenly Sokka's voice.
He appears on Appa, with Jaiyi and Momo on the saddle.
His sister and friends are so glad to see him.
Sokka explains how he managed to warn the village in time, so no one died.
Of course, Jet was angry.
This was his chance to ride and free the valley from the Fire Nation and Sokka thwarted him.
Hua shakes her head in disgust at Jet's madness and earthbends herself on Appa's saddle. Jaiyi jumps in her arms, licking her cheeks. She hugs her ninetails tight.
“Who would be free?”, asked Sokka rhetoric “Everyone would be dead.”
“You traitor!”
“No, Jet. You became the traitor when you stopped protecting innocent people.”
Jet begs Katara to help him, but she just says goodbye to him.
Hua earthbends her best friend into the saddle and Jaiyi gives now Katara licks.
Both girls smile at the ninetails in thanks.
With a Yip-Yip from Sokka, Appa flies away from Jet.
They are soaring through the sky for a while till Aang says to Sokka: “We hoped you were going to the dam. How come you went to the town instead?”
“Let me guess, your instincts told you.”, speculated Katara.
“Hey, sometimes they're right.”, says Sokka with a shoulder shrug.
“Mmh, you do know we are flying in the wrong direction?”, asks Hua with a little smile.
“And sometimes they're wrong.”, admits Sokka and stears them back on the right course.
***
Late at night while anyone was sleeping Hua looked at the moon and cried silent tears.
She didn’t see Veda, so she couldn’t tell her how disgusted and disappointed she was in her.
Veda seemed so good, so perfect…in the future Hua decided to listen to her instincts more.
For Sokka, it worked as it showed.
That’s when she hears how someone stands up and walks over to her.
Without a word a warm hand grips her and she squeezes back.
The black-haired girl lays her head on Katara's shoulder and the older girl her over the younger.
The two don’t need words to understand each other.
They have both crushed on people who in the end were terrible.
In the future, they will be more careful with their hearts.
But for now, they were happy they had each other.
And this was enough.

I’m not sure if this has been asked before but…
Why did Arnook never ask Sokka to watch and protect Yue during the siege of the north?
Because there are so many ways you can interpret that character just from canon. He may have seen Sokka’s fight and leadership and genuinely felt he’d protect Yue, or he saw how much Yue cared for him and tried to keep him as far away from fighting as possible.
I’m totally aware it was probably a split second decision on his part either way, but since there probably won’t be a lot more about the nwt in liab canon, I was wondering if you could give some insight into the character? Totally cool if it was just what needed to happen to catalyst Sokka getting captured.
I’m honestly just fishing for northern water tribe lore cause I think they’re interesting. Plus I tried to send an ask about yue and tumblr fucking died on me and i lost like 10 minutes of thinking that i now can’t recall. These last few chapters have been real tear jerkers. And Yue’s death reveal to Sokka has me thinking about ✨where this all started✨
Ok so honesty hour - it was for the plot, but when giving it more thought here is how I imagined the interaction going.
Sokka & Han have their little scuffle and Sokka is approached by Arnook, (& because in LIAB if someone has gone ice dodging and earn their mark they are considered a man and allowed to go to war) so yeah Sokka is 15 but he is a man in the tribes eyes. Also they don’t know him as the goofy kid like most of the SWT men do. Sokka showed up with the avatar & has seen battle & fought the FN & is ultimately an experienced warrior to them.
Which he did do those thing but he was very sheltered with aang & Appa - (damn it that beautiful sky bison made everything so much easier) so I believe Arnook would have asked Sokka where he felt he was needed most during the battle and Sokka of course would say “with the other warriors” (he had something to prove to himself unfortunately - trauma from his dad leaving as such a pivotal age and such) so Arnook (knowing Sokka is the avatars friend) placed him out on the wall, with other experienced warriors who were told to keep an eye on him (because yeah he is a warrior but also a 15 year old kid) and he was stationed in an area close to the healers and away from where they thought the most of the fighting would be.
Unfortunately we know what happened there & that’s what lead us into well…. *gestures at mess* all this.
Idk if that answers your question but to keep it simple haha I think Arnook would have given him a choice, and whatever Sokka (as a man) choose he would have supported.

ATLA marathon done ( I never entirely watched the 3rd season before, only the episodes after Zuko joined) and here's some very unpopular opinions about it:
1/ Suki is overrated and a bit annoying.
I don't hate her character but I never saw her as a part of the Gaang nor as a love interest for Sokka. A brief one in season 1 to mark his long road out of his sexism, yeah, but after? I don't think she's relevant anymore. Kyoshi's warriors should stay in Kyoshi's island, period. Ty Lee has so much more potential for me.
2/ Zutara is freaking stereotypical and boring.
And let's be honest, most of these shippers are themselves either crushing on Zuzu, either on Katara or even on both. It could maybe be a brief moment but not a long term relationship.
3/ Aang is unbearable half of the show.
From his voice to his "but the monks told" to his refusal to even consider the fact he could possibly have to end a monster to save everyone else... He sounds altruistic and nice but he can also be very self centered and irresponsible. I totally get that he's only 12, but when you act like a holier-than-thou more than the half of the story it's just irritating. In season 1 yeah it was normal but I feel like he was like that all the show
4/ The main villain is dull and empty.
Big bad fire dad who want to be the ultimate world ruler, give me a break... Hot but lack of everything else. But good looking.
5/ Making the Fire Nation soldiers more dumb or less good at fighting than everyone else is just stupid. How did they managed to conquer the world? Take the Rough Rhinos for example, described by Iroh like if they were legendary fighters but beaten each time? Very logical, very very logical. Only the Yuyan Archers weren't poorly treated but these poor archers never came back so...
6/ Appa and flying bisons are overrated. Dragons and shirshus are way cooler. And the fact they made him go underwater in the invasion episode is just ridiculous, why not making him earthbend or breath fire at that point?
7/ Speaking of Shirshus... June would make a good ship for Zuko. He's made for powerful non bender girls with long dark hair.
8/ Uncle Iroh is nice but not an angel, and Iroh apologists should remember than if Lu Ten was still here, Iroh would probably be an antagonist, one you wouldn't mess with.
9/ Fire Nation seems to be the only one, with the swamp benders, to allow women in their army. Also their technology... No wonder Legend of Korra is in the 20s, after the end of the war, they had all the time to create and modernize.
10/ And finally, Katara is the reason why Zuko didn't win the last Agni Kai. If she wasn't in the way like that, Azula wouldn't be able to target her, and Zuko wouldn't have to sacrifice himself for his friend. I smell the same bullshit as the Hermione situation in the first HP movies when they tried to make her doing all the cool stuff/ good lines, they should let Zuko have this moment for himself, Katara already has plenty occasions to shine.
Now the angry fangirlies can rage in their corner, it'll keep them busy until Netflix ruined the show.
