interesting to me how when i turned 19 i was kinda terrified bc i was like “oh shit this is my last year as a teenager….. i won’t be a teenager after that… i wanted to be a teenager for all of my childhood and now that part’s almost Over. aaaaugh” and now approx. 9 months later i cannot fucking WAIT to stop being a teenager oh my god i am ready to move on. 20s please i would like to be in them. i am done being 19 thank you !!!
#marzi speaks#it’s . probably bc of the vasculitis thing#which like. while it is a traumatic thing that i need to work through and plan on going to therapy about#it also put a LOT of things into perspective for me#and like actually i do not think i am afraid of growing up anymore !#i mean i still have like. the imposter syndrome and the fear of getting overwhelmed and falling behind#that’s not gonna go away overnight that’s been there for as long as i can remember#BUT!! i know deep down that i can figure it out now.#bc i figured out a lot. i figured out how to gauge my physical well being#i figured out how to be someone who can regularly make phone calls without crying#i figured out pharmacies. and i’m figuring out how insurance works#and appointments and withdrawing from school and reapplying to school#and all of the lifestyle changes that come with having an autoimmune disease#i’m learning self advocacy. i’m learning how to respond when people treat me poorly (always accidentally so far)#yeah getting my license has been hard and slow just bc i have all the anxiety shit about it. but i AM putting that effort in#i dunno it’s just. adult responsibilities are horrifying and the prospect of existing independently in our current society#is horrifying. and i think i’ll always be scared.#but i used to think i might not be able to handle it. that i would fall apart#i know now that i won’t. i will find a way to move forward and be happy. because that’s what i’ve always done#if i can take the scariest couple of months in stride the way that i have. then i think i can handle it#anyways. 19 was eventful enough can i be 20 now. i think being 20 would be good for me#still a Weird thing to think about. two whole decades. but like i can do it methinks

We NEED to reevaluate how we view people with "red flags" that don't actually indicate harm to anyone. Things like "doesn't like animals," "doesn't have pets," "my pets immediately distrust them, so that means they're Secretly Evil."
I have a psychotic disorder. I suffer from flat affect. I have zero control over how I am emoting, and very often my emotional readout is completely blank. A LOT of animals (dogs especially) have exhibited aggression and fear around me ever since this started. (There are only TWO dogs I've met in the last five years that didn't BITE ME.) Dogs are unsettled by me because of a symptom of my psychosis--a condition that is out of my control that IS NOT DANGEROUS and doesn't harm anyone.
I also have a severe autoimmune disease and severe allergies to basically all animals. Whenever I tell people I can't come over because they have pets, or I don't have/want pets of my own, the IMMEDIATE response I always get is "why don't you like animals?" So I'm always pretty pissed off when I have to say, "I'm severely allergic. Don't fucking assume I have an undesireable quality just because I'm not a pet owner."
Another ableist red flag we need to talk about is "has no other friends/all their friends break up with them." Hi. I'm physically disabled with a digestive disease and a degenerative disease in my spine. That means my dietary restrictions are stupid and I can't sit/stand/walk for more than 15 minutes without being in pain. Most of the friends I break up with, I do so BECAUSE THEY ARE INCREDIBLY ABLEIST TO ME with no visible potential of changing. From people relentlessly harrassing me about lifestyle changes to not accepting correction or feedback when I tell them "hey, you CAN'T do x because it triggers y condition." If they argue or blow me off, I'm not their fucking friend!
Tl;dr: Disabled, chronically ill, and people with "scary" mental illnesses are often lumped in with "bad people" for characteristics that hurt no one and aren't in their control. Stop using "my dog is uncomfortable around them" as a litmus test for everyone you hang out with.

life udpate
hello everybody! i am still around and i am still playing the sims, i just don't have any edited pictures to post. i am still deep in the trenches of organizing my cc, which is a lifelong battle, i guess.
i go by any pronouns now. accepting my autism has also led me to accepting that i'm pretty much agender. i'm still a huge feminist, but i don't care about how the world perceives me/i don't put a lot of effort into perceiving myself. "any pronouns, agender" is the best way i've come up with to express this.
my med change process ended up being completely moot, i'm just back on the original medication. however, there is an update regarding the fatigue that set it all off. i'm pretty sure i have lupus. i have family members that have it and two weeks ago i got a bunch of autoimmune symptoms at once (that i'm still experiencing). i also have the classic butterfly rash that i've had for years. i have a doctor's appointment on wednesday to address this. they say lupus starts appearing around age 30 and i'm 27, so the timeline is right.
what does this mean? honestly, not a lot. i already work from home as an independent contractor, so my lifestyle isn't going to be that affected. if anything, getting treatment will only improve my life. my major symptoms are general fatigue, migraine headaches, and bipolar-like psychiatric symptoms, so hopefully i'll be able to address these. i also get low-grade fevers (especially when exhausted), i'm prone to rashes and hives, and this flare-up has caused joint swelling on both my wrists which is pretty miserable.
the wrist thing is the biggest issue, since all my hobbies and work involve typing or holding a pen. luckily, if it is lupus, lupus joint pain doesn't really cause any lasting damage, unlike other forms of arthritis. i've tried a bunch of stuff and nothing has taken the swelling down, so i'm hoping to get a brace from the rheumatologist on wednesday. my ankles also bother me sometimes, but that's more manageable.
my partner is amazing throughout all this and very accepting, of course. it helps that he's a veterinarian which means he has enough medical knowledge (animals also get lupus, apparently!) to help me with my symptoms.
i used to want biological children, quite badly, but then i got with my partner, and we don't have the matching biology to make a baby naturally. we started talking about adoption (in the future, like when we're near 40) and i'm fully on board with adopting, especially in brazil where we live, as the system is much better for the children. now that i'm aware of the autoimmune disease that runs in my family, i definitely don't want to have biological children. i've considered (if we can afford it) implanting my partner's eggs into my womb to carry, but i think pregnancy would be much too rough on me, much less the baby. our ideal situation would be being financially stable, established, and adopting an older sibling pair or trio. we'll see how it goes with my autoimmune disease.
anyway, back to the sims. i'm in year 4 week 5 of stilla and everything is still hanging on. i fully plan on playing it through to the end and updating all my challenges. it gives me joy. and now that i've accepted my life might be a little more slow-paced, that's okay.

Exploring Psoriasis: Causes, Triggers, and Treatment Options Including Homeopathy
Psoriasis is one of the chronic autoimmune disorders that mainly manifests in the skin, developing red and scaly patches. However, due to its recognition as the most common type of skin disorder, little is said about the reasons behind psoriasis and appropriate treatments for it. Here, some of the major causes, triggers, specific scalp psoriasis treatment, psoriatic arthritis treatment, and the benefits offered by homeopathy, mainly by specialists at Bharat Homeopathy will be discussed.
Causes and Triggers of Psoriasis
There have been identified several reasons as causes of the disease that come from an accumulation of both genetic and environmental factors. This tends to happen when the human immune system starts attacking their cells, mistakingly resembling the characteristics of cells under some infectious or diseased diseases by multiplying faster than normal speeds. The family history about suffering from the disease often poses a strong risk that they are bound to inherit such condition.
Hyperactive Immune: An overreactive immune system can also be the main culprit by causing inflammation and the faster turnover of skin cells.
Extrinsic Factors: Externally, causes may range from stress, infections, cuts on the skin, or exposure to some medicines or chemicals. If you want to cure naturally, then you can adopt natural scalp psoriasis treatment.
Lifestyle Factors: Factors such as obesity, smoking, and alcoholism also exacerbate symptoms.
One of the conditions is scalp psoriasis which occurs in most people. It shares its underlying cause with the rest of the types of psoriasis, but dry skin, changes of season, and irritation caused by hair products may aggravate the condition.
Treatment of Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriasis is a common coexistence with psoriatic arthritis, which itself could be an inflammatory form of arthritis. It always hurts and swells along the joints it affects but hardly ever leads to some disabling form of arthritis if started early. Maintaining the overall general state of health is absolutely very crucial to successful psoriatic arthritis treatment. One or a combination of following, mostly form the natural treatment for psoriasis plans most of the physicians typically suggest to their clients; include the use of drugs. Certain homeopathic medications tend to target some parts of the immune system. So, they could be efficient for both diseases. Physical Therapies are there to help enhance joint activity and reduce stiffness.
Homeopathy
It is the holistic and permanent solution for psoriasis way. Homeopathy is a whole different way to treat the disorder of psoriasis along with all related diseases. Experts at Bharat Homeopathy treat their patients through well-crafted treatment programs keeping in view each individual's specific signs and causative factors. Homeopathy operates on the law of cure: "like treats like." Homeopathy strives to restore normalcy through the activation of natural processes in the body.
Keeping Psoriasis at Bay Using Homeopathy
The advantages of using homeopathic natural remedy for scalp psoriasis include its ability to prevent the spreading of psoriasis. The homeopathic medications enhance the immune system and reduce inflammation, leading to a decrease in flare-ups and disease progression. Some of the common scalp psoriasis treatment are often administered in cases where there is dry, scaly, and itchy patches. These are used for oozing and sticky lesions and help in conditions that are worsened by sunlight exposure. These effectively eliminates symptoms and ensures that they are not recurring by attacking deep-rooted causes of psoriasis in patients, along with personal precipitants.
Advantages of Homeopathy in Treatment for Psoriasis
Several are the advantages of choosing homeopathy as a healing for psoriasis:
As this treatment is based upon general well-being and lifestyle habits as well as mental state in its approach, it's always more tailored. This includes minimal side effects, the natural remedy for scalp psoriasis is safe and highly tolerated by patients, for which there is no harm of major side effects found when conventional medications are often accompanied by them. Also, holistic approach by using homeopathy, attention is paid not only towards the physical symptoms but toward the emotional and psychological feeling that the patient has who is living with a long-term chronic condition. Other comorbid conditions can also be treated with homeopathic natural treatment for psoriasis, such as anxiety and depression that may coexist with psoriasis.
Conclusion The management of psoriasis is best carried out by understanding the pathophysiology of the condition, including its causes and triggers, as well as its treatments. Psoriatic arthritis demands a holistic and permanent solution for psoriasis, while homeopathy gives an alternative holistic approach for individualized care and preventive measures. Experts at Bharat Homeopathy prescribe individualized homeopathic medicines to reduce the manifestation of psoriasis as much as possible and limit the spreading of the condition. Multidisciplinary care with a combination of mainstream and alternative natural scalp psoriasis treatment enables those affected by psoriasis to experience improved health status and quality of life.

Recognizing and Treating Gum Infections: When to Seek Help
Gum infections, often overlooked in the realm of oral health, can lead to significant complications if not addressed promptly. Understanding the signs and symptoms of these infections is crucial for maintaining not only dental health but overall well-being. This article delves into the nuances of gum infections, exploring their causes, symptoms, treatment options, and the vital moments when professional help is imperative.
Tumblr media
Understanding Gum Infections: Causes and Risk Factors
Gum infection treatment, primarily rooted in periodontal disease, arise when bacteria invade the gum tissue, leading to inflammation and discomfort. The most common form, gingivitis, often presents as redness and swelling of the gums, frequently accompanied by bleeding during brushing or flossing. The primary culprit behind this condition is plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. When not removed through regular dental hygiene practices, plaque hardens into tartar, further irritating the gums.
Several factors can increase the risk of developing gum infections. Poor oral hygiene is the most obvious, but lifestyle choices such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can exacerbate the problem. Additionally, certain medical conditions, including diabetes and autoimmune disorders, can compromise the body’s ability to fight infections, making individuals more susceptible to gum disease. Hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause also play a role, as fluctuations in hormones can affect gum health.
Recognising the early signs of gum infections is vital. Symptoms such as persistent bad breath, gum swelling, and discomfort when chewing can indicate the presence of an infection. If left untreated, these mild symptoms can escalate into more severe issues, including periodontal disease, which may result in tooth loss. Hence, understanding the underlying causes is the first step towards prevention and treatment.
Identifying Symptoms: When to Be Concerned
While gum infections may start with subtle signs, they can quickly progress into more serious conditions if not addressed. Early symptoms often include swollen, tender gums that may bleed during regular brushing. It is essential to note that not all gum infections present with pain; some individuals may experience no discomfort at all, which can lead to a false sense of security.
As the infection worsens, symptoms may escalate to include persistent bad breath, a change in bite, and pus between the teeth and gums. These indicators signify that the infection may have advanced, necessitating immediate attention. One should also be alert to systemic symptoms such as fever or swollen lymph nodes, which can indicate that the infection is spreading and requires urgent medical intervention.
Regular dental check-ups are paramount in catching these issues early. Dental professionals can identify signs of gum disease through routine cleanings and examinations, even before symptoms become apparent to the patient. For those who experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with a dental professional to assess the condition and receive appropriate guidance.
Treatment Options: From Home Remedies to Professional Help
When it comes to treating gum infections, the approach can vary significantly depending on the severity of the condition. For mild cases, enhancing oral hygiene practices can be remarkably effective. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, coupled with daily flossing, can help eliminate plaque build-up and reduce inflammation. Additionally, rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash may provide extra protection against bacteria.
However, as the severity of the infection increases, professional dental treatment becomes crucial. A dentist may recommend scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning procedure aimed at removing tartar from below the gum line. This process not only helps remove the bacteria causing the infection but also promotes gum reattachment to the teeth. In more severe cases, antibiotic treatment may be necessary. Dentists can prescribe topical or oral antibiotics to help control the infection and reduce inflammation.
In instances where the infection has led to abscess formation, more aggressive interventions may be required. This could involve draining the abscess to alleviate pressure and pain, alongside a course of antibiotics. It is important to adhere to the prescribed treatment plan and attend follow-up appointments to ensure the infection is fully resolved.
For those who prefer natural remedies, certain options may offer some relief. Saltwater rinses can help soothe inflamed gums, while warm tea bags may provide a comforting compress for swollen areas. However, these should not replace professional dental care, especially in the case of advanced infections.
When to Seek Help: The Importance of Timeliness
Knowing when to seek professional help is crucial in managing gum infections effectively. If symptoms persist for more than a few days or worsen despite improved oral hygiene practices, it is time to consult a dental professional. Ignoring the signs can lead to more severe complications, including chronic gum disease or systemic infections that could affect other areas of health.
Furthermore, individuals with pre-existing health conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, should be particularly vigilant. Gum infections have been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, underscoring the need for timely intervention. The connection between oral health and overall health is becoming increasingly recognised, making it essential to address any signs of gum disease promptly.
Regular dental visits are also vital in preventing gum infections. Most dental professionals recommend biannual check-ups, where they can monitor gum health and catch potential issues early. Investing time in preventative care not only saves money in the long run but also safeguards overall health.
In summary, gum infections are a common yet often underestimated issue that can lead to severe health complications. Recognising the signs, understanding the causes, and knowing when to seek help are crucial steps in managing oral health effectively. By prioritising dental hygiene and remaining vigilant about symptoms, individuals can take proactive measures to prevent gum infections and maintain a healthy smile.

Celine Dion's story
I just watched the documentary, I am Celine Dion on Prime. It showed all about her life since she had to quit showbiz because she got diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome.
Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) is an autoimmune and neurological disorder that can make the muscles in the torso and limbs alternate between rigidity and spasms. The cause of this extremely rare disease is still unknown.
I am always saying that money doesn't bring happiness and it doesn't bring health as well. This incredible superstar who had everything, now with all her money, can not do anything to fix this. We never know when life will throw you a curveball, when it will all come crashing down. It's a crap shoot. You can do all the right things, and still, it can happen.
This documentary shows how she is dealing with this life depilation disease, and it's so sad to see her now. After so many years, seeing her so vibrant. But she is a fighter, and she is not ready to give up. She wanted us to see this in this documentary. She said she would continue to fight and try to beat this. She has had such determination throughout her life, and this is no different. She has shown us what determination looks like and that she is and always will be a fighter. When she stepped out on the stage and did such an amazing performance at this summers Olympic games in Paris, we all saw that.
So today, my friends, I am here to say you never know what will happen. You never know how life will change. You must just keep going, keep believing, and keep being determined. You have to be grateful each and every day for your health and for your life because there's always someone out there praying for what you have. Don't ever forget that it could all change in a moment, just like it did for Celine Dion.

Anyone who has combed their hair may discover many strands in the shower drain, pillow cover, or hairbrush. These are all indicators of significant hair loss.
When males experience significant hair loss, they may see thinning hair on their heads, a receding hairline, or baldness in a horseshoe pattern.
Women may present with generalized hair thinning or loss, particularly at the crown of their heads.
Among children and young adults, the signs of hair loss include rapid falling out of a patch of hair or frequent hair shedding following certain medications, medical conditions, stress, significant weight loss, and many more.
What are the Causes of Hair Fall?
Tumblr media
Hair loss can occur owing to a variety of factors, including:
Family History: Men and women with a family history of hair loss are more prone to suffer from androgenetic alopecia, also known as pattern baldness, an inherited disorder.
Hormonal Changes: Variations in the levels of male and female sex hormones in an individual during reproductive health events such as pregnancy, puberty, or menopause can all cause hair loss. Prolonged usage of oral birth control tablets may cause hair loss due to a decrease in estrogen and an increase in androgen hormone levels. Thyroid issues can also produce hormone fluctuations, which impact hair follicle growth.
Stress: When a person is physically or emotionally stressed, their cortisol levels rise. Excess cortisol causes abrupt, patchy hair loss, a disorder known as alopecia areata.
Nutritional deficiencies occur when people do not consume a balanced diet on a daily basis. If their diet is weak in key vitamins, minerals, and proteins, their hair will grow poorly, and existing hair strands may fall out quickly.
Poor Environmental Conditions: Daily exposure to contaminants in the environment can cause hair breakage and loss.
Scalp Infection or Trauma: A head injury or a ringworm infection on the scalp can cause hair loss.
Some Medical Treatments: Treatments for cancer, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy, can cause temporary hair loss.
Underlying Medical Illnesses: Medical conditions, such as arthritis, autoimmune diseases, and cardiac problems, might increase the likelihood of hair loss.
Medications—Certain medications, such as mood stabilizers, antidepressants, antifungals, acne medications, beta-blockers, cholesterol-lowering pharmaceuticals, thyroid medications, and hormone-containing therapies, can cause excessive hair loss.
Traction Alopecia: This hair loss is caused by tight hairstyles that pull the hair, causing it to split and come free.
Heat Hairstyling or Chemical-based Hair Treatments: Some people often style their hair with hair dryers or straightening equipment. Others may have chemicals used to dye their hair. If they are done frequently or excessively, they can cause hair loss.
Poor Hair Care Routine—Many people have poor lifestyles and are unwilling to take good care of their hair. They may utilize hair care products that weaken and damage hair follicles, leading to hair loss.
What are the Ways to Treat Hair Fall?
Tumblr media
DermoRita Skin Clinic, an advanced skin and hair clinic, provides innovative, effective, and cutting-edge treatments under expert supervision to properly control hair fall or hair loss difficulties. The doctor recommends the following top hair fall treatments:
PRP Hair Therapy- Platelet plasma, or PRP, is a blood component that is extracted by centrifugation from the patient's blood. It contains natural growth hormones and vital proteins, which are said to help mend bodily tissues. When a PRP solution is created and injected into areas displaying signs of hair loss, it can stimulate hair follicles to generate healthy hair and even assist in protecting the health of existing hair.
To achieve the best effects with this therapy, a person would need many PRP treatment sessions spaced out over a few weeks, followed by one monthly session to maintain new hair development.
Mesotherapy for Hair- This treatment targets the factors involved in natural hair growth. It involves injecting a combination of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, vital amino acids, botanical extracts, and some hair growth-promoting drugs into the scalp's mesoderm at the hair loss region. Hair mesotherapy can improve blood circulation to the scalp, boost cell metabolism, and stimulate hair growth from existing follicles.
Dermaroller—There is some evidence that hair loss sufferers can benefit from using dermarollers. Dermarollers are medical devices with numerous microneedles on their surfaces. They are rolled over the area of hair loss or loss to produce several skin pricks at once. They promote healthy hair development by boosting the blood supply to the scalp.
Growth Factor Injection: This is a scientifically proven, more advanced treatment for hair loss and the greatest option for PRP hair therapy. The procedure includes injecting natural growth factors and vital proteins into the hair roots to boost healthy growth. These concentrated growth factors are extracted from the patient's blood by centrifugation.
FUE Hair Transplant—This is a surgical hair restoration treatment best suited for people who suffer from permanent, severe hair loss and seek a permanent solution. In the Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplant method, a surgeon harvests individual hair follicles with a micro punch device and places them one by one in micro-slits made in regions of hair thinning or baldness.

10 Medical Conditions That Impact Women More Than Men
Being a woman comes with so many blessings. Our bodies can do unique and amazing things — like growing life. But if you’re a woman, you’re also at greater risk for a number of diseases and conditions that are less common in men. We’re here to spread awareness about 12 of them, what they are and where to find help.
Anxiety
Women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder in their lifetime. While it’s normal for all of us to worry at times, an anxiety disorder is constant, severe and negatively impacts day-to-day living. The five most common anxiety disorders are generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder (PD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD). Prioritize taking care of your mental health.
Autoimmune Diseases
There are more than 80 autoimmune diseases, and more than 75% of patients who have them are women. Autoimmune illnesses occur when the body’s immune system goes into overdrive and mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells. A few of the most common autoimmune diseases are lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, Type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Eating well is key to staying well if you have an autoimmune disease.
Breast Cancer
Breast cancer in men is a possibility, but it’s 100 times more common in women. The average risk of a woman developing breast cancer in her lifetime is about 12%. You can reduce your risk by living a healthy lifestyle — eating a balanced diet, choosing not to smoke, limiting alcohol intake and staying active.
Broken Heart Syndrome
Broken heart syndrome is a temporary heart condition that mimics a heart attack. It’s often triggered by stressful situations, extreme emotions, surgery or a serious physical injury. The stress is usually sudden and acute, emotional or physical, and quickly weakens the heart muscle from the overwhelming amount of adrenaline produced in response. According to the American Heart Association, broken heart syndrome is more common in women than in men.
Depression
Like anxiety, which is often comorbid with depression, women are also twice as likely as men to have depression. Depression can be caused and influenced by biological factors like fluctuating female hormones during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, the Pospartum period and menopause. Environmental factors like stress, pain, medical problems and level of family and social support also come into play.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that occurs when digestive complaints such as cramping, diarrhea, constipation and bloating last for three months or more. It’s more common in women, and their symptoms tend to worsen at the start of each menstrual period.
Migraines
Migraines are severe, sometimes chronic headaches. They can cause nausea, vomiting, light and sound sensitivity and vision changes. They affect more than 30 million Americans, but women are three times more likely than man to get migraines. They could be triggered by hormone changes.
Osteoporosis
In osteoporosis, the bones become weak and more likely to break. Of the ten million Americans estimated to have osteoporosis, 80% of them are women. The older you are, the higher your risk gets when menopause sets in. Estrogen levels drop and bone loss increases as a result. To slow bone loss, get plenty of vitamin D, calcium and exercise.
Stroke
Strokes block the blood flow to the brain and kill more women than men. While risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking and family medical history apply to everyone, women have some unique risk factors for stroke. They are pregnancy, taking birth control pills, using hormone replacement therapy and having frequent migraines.
Urinary Tract Infections
Women have a higher rate of UTIs than men. Experts believe that because women have shorter urethras, they’re more prone to bacterial transmissions in the genital area.
Comprehensive, Compassionate Women’s Care for Every Need
From annual wellness visits to female primary care to get women health care services and finding solutions for your most sensitive health concerns. Whatever your age and stage of life, and however complex your medical condition, we’re here to help you feel whole.

A Few Lesser Known Types of Arthritis
Tumblr media
Arthritis is a general term used to refer to a group of conditions and diseases defined by joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and discomfort. Arthritis symptoms can range from mild to debilitating. In fact, arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Symptoms may be acute and pass in a few days, while chronic arthritis persists for months or years at a time, in some cases creating permanent changes to the joints and other parts of the body.
When used as an umbrella term, arthritis is one of the most common health conditions in America. About 53.2 million individuals, or nearly one out of six citizens, live with some type of arthritis. The condition’s annual economic impact surpasses $300 billion. Individuals may be familiar with some of the more well-known examples of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, a condition affecting roughly 32.5 million people in America. That said, there are more than 100 types of arthritis.
There are about 16,000 new cases of lupus each year, contributing to the estimated 1.5 million Americans living with the autoimmune disease. Some people living with lupus develop lupus arthritis, a condition comparable to rheumatoid arthritis, though it is generally less severe. Still, it is not uncommon for individuals living with lupus arthritis to experience bone and joint misalignments, especially in the fingers.
Psoriatic arthritis is a condition combining symptoms of arthritis and skin rashes associated with psoriasis, a chronic skin and nail disease. As is the case with lupus arthritis, individuals who do not seek medical treatments and lifestyle changes for psoriatic arthritis can experience permanent joint deformities, usually in the fingers. As many as 8 million Americans live with psoriasis, though only about 1.5 million have developed psoriatic arthritis.
Many types of arthritis occur in tandem with or as a result of another condition impacting the body. Enteropathic arthritis, for instance, is a form of arthritis stemming from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Crohn's arthritis, meanwhile, only affects individuals living with Crohn’s disease. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 2.39 million Americans were living with IBD in 2020, along with just over 1 million Americans living with Crohn’s disease, though not all of these people had developed arthritis.
Many forms of arthritis share similar symptoms, especially when it comes to joint stiffness and swelling in the fingers. However, arthritis can impact joints throughout the body. Reactive arthritis is more associated with inflammation of joints throughout the knees, feet, ankles, and toes, as well as the hips. While the causes behind arthritic conditions are not always known, reactive arthritis is typically linked to infections, particularly food poisoning and sexually transmitted diseases. Between 600,000 and 900,000 Americans live with ulcerative colitis arthritis, an inflammatory bowel disease similar to Crohn’s that can also lead to an arthritic condition, aptly named ulcerative colitis arthritis.
Finally, undifferentiated inflammatory arthritis, or simply undifferentiated arthritis, describes early-onset arthritis caused by a disease not yet known to the medical staff tasked with treatment. From 41 to 149 adults per 100,000 live with the symptoms of undifferentiated inflammatory arthritis. More common examples include inflammatory arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. There are also many conditions similar to arthritis, such as gout and ankylosing spondylitis.

Caring for Women's Hearts - A Cardiologist's Perspective by Richard Zelman MD
Caring for Women's Hearts: A Cardiologist's Perspective
The intricate balance of women's heart health is one that deserves careful attention and thoughtful medical intervention. Accumulating research, pioneered by experts like Dr. Richard Zelman MD, has illuminated the importance of a more nuanced understanding of cardiovascular disease in women. The unique risk factors women face, such as hormonal changes across the lifecycle, pregnancy-related complications, and certain autoimmune conditions, significantly influence their heart health.
Furthermore, symptoms of heart disease in women can be distinctly different from those in men, often leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. As we delve deeper into the complexities of cardiovascular wellness in women, we will also explore proactive strategies for promoting heart health. These preventive strategies range from lifestyle modifications like diet and exercise, to regular screenings for early detection of potential risks. Recognize the importance of tailored approaches – because when it comes to heart health, one size does not fit all.
Understanding the Gender Divide in Heart Health
Richard Zelman MD emphasizes that the pervasive recognition of cardiovascular disease is contrasted by a false perception that its impact is largely confined to the male demographic. This erroneous belief carries the potential risk of leading to an underdiagnoses and inadequate treatment of heart-related complications in women. The truth of the matter is heart disease does not show partiality towards gender. However, it's important to note that its manifestation varies significantly between women and men, impacting each demographic in unique ways. The subtle nuances in symptoms and the progression of the disease necessitate a careful, individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment. While traditional risk factors like smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol apply to both genders, there are specific risk factors that women should be aware of:
Hormonal Changes: Women's hormonal fluctuations, such as those during pregnancy and menopause, can influence their heart health. Conditions like gestational diabetes and preeclampsia can increase the risk of heart disease later in life.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a common endocrine disorder among women, characterized by irregular periods and elevated androgen levels. It has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease due to insulin resistance and obesity.
Autoimmune Diseases: Conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis are more common in women and can have adverse effects on the heart.
Mental Health: Women's emotional well-being can also impact their heart health. Chronic stress, depression, and anxiety can lead to unhealthy lifestyle choices and increase the risk of heart disease.
Menopause: The hormonal changes during menopause can lead to changes in cholesterol levels and increased risk of heart disease. Hormone replacement therapy should be carefully considered, as it may have both benefits and risks.
Recognizing Gender-Specific Symptoms
The challenge lies in the fact that the symptoms in women are often subtle and varied compared to those in men. This discrepancy necessitates a greater degree of vigilance from both healthcare providers and women themselves. Understanding these nuanced differences in symptoms can lead to a more accurate diagnosis more effective treatment strategies, further highlighting the importance of expertise and experience in the field of cardiovascular medicine. Richard Zelman MD's vast experience in this area serves as a beacon, guiding us towards better patient care and outcomes in cardiac health.
Chest Pain: While chest pain is a common symptom in both genders, women may experience atypical chest pain that is less severe or not localized. It can be mistaken for indigestion or muscle pain.
Shortness of Breath: Women are more likely to report shortness of breath, fatigue, or weakness as their primary symptoms. These symptoms may occur even without chest discomfort.
Nausea or Vomiting: Unexplained nausea or vomiting can be a warning sign of a heart attack in women.
Pain in Other Areas: Pain in the neck, jaw, shoulder, back, or abdomen may be a sign of heart disease in women.
Cold Sweats: Profuse sweating, often described as "cold sweats," can accompany a heart attack in women.
Empowering Women with Knowledge
Richard Zelman MD, emphasizes the importance of educating women about their distinct risk factors and heart disease symptoms, asserting that this is a key strategy in elevating their cardiovascular health. He believes that women should not only be aware, but also be proactive about their heart health.
Regular Check-ups: Routine check-ups with a healthcare provider are essential to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and overall heart health. Women should discuss their family history and any specific concerns related to women's health.
Lifestyle Modifications: Adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle is the foundation of prevention. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and quitting smoking if applicable.
Stress Management: Women should prioritize stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or counseling to reduce the negative impact of chronic stress on their hearts.
Medication Adherence: If prescribed medications, women should adhere to their treatment plans and follow up with their healthcare providers to monitor their progress.
Awareness of Menopausal Changes: Women approaching menopause should be aware of the potential impact on their heart health and discuss hormone replacement therapy options with their healthcare providers.
As a cardiologist, he firmly believes in the power of collaboration and research to advance the field of women's heart health. Clinical studies focusing on gender-specific risk factors, symptoms, and treatment strategies are crucial in providing evidence-based care. Healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers must work together to bridge the gender gap in heart disease awareness, prevention, and treatment.
Dr. Richard Zelman MD stresses that caring for women's hearts requires a multifaceted approach that addresses gender-specific risk factors, recognizes atypical symptoms, and empowers women with knowledge. Heart disease is a significant threat to women's health, and we must break down the misconceptions surrounding gender and cardiovascular health. By fostering awareness, advocating for tailored care, and promoting research, we can make strides in ensuring that women receive the specialized attention they need to protect their hearts and lead long, healthy lives.
