I'm only 3/4 of the way through it, but so far it's amazingly, wonderfully insane that Victor/Victoria has aged sooo beautifully as an lgbt+ movie? Like oh my godddd there are so many things that I'm losing my shit over here (contains spoilers !) :
Victoria coming out of Toddy's closet wearing that one guy's clothes and then clocking and kicking his ass
Them addressing certain straight men's fear and insecurity around being attracted to drag queens (and inadvertently, trans women)- and the insecurity in their masculinity/the need to prove that they're (straight/masculine/cis) men
Norma having it revealed to her that Victoria's a man and immediately jumping into saying "well, a woman can always tell- no matter hormone shots, etc. there's some things that can't be hidden" (she's literally flat out making shit up cuz that aint the case lmfaoo) I love how in the context of now this feels like they're actively dunking on transphobes
Toddy saying "You know, I think the right woman could reform you, too." right back at Norma when she says it to him

not to get swept up in the timeless appeal of classic literature but I saw hamlet at the royal shakespeare theatre today and I think it changed my life
#we went because of Jared Harris#we left as different people#they set it on like a titanic esque stage#with all of them dressed Edwardian style and the company wearing crew uniforms emblazoned with ‘Elsinor’#above the stage there were these digital clocks which slowly ticked up between each scene#until just before the interval when the ship hits the damned ice berg (I.e. to be or not to be)#and then the whole fucking set tilted bit by bit until by the end it was like 75 degrees#with each character sliding off stage as they died#and to top it off I felt like I was watching a man have an actual irl mental breakdown on stage#literally was in tears when Ophelia died too like wtf#like your man being hamlet was so fucking good like you just desperately wanted someone to take him seriously#but when he started shouting at Ophelia I was ready to throw hands#10/10 live theatre is amazing

#mfw a movie has irish slang in it and i am familiar with it instead of usamerican stuff#i have Some Thoughts on the setting of inisherin + the time period given the givens abt the aran islands#but nothing concrete. might meditate on it#like ok im no scholar on the aran islands ive been there a couple times ive read a couple articles thats it#but like. the tourism leaning into their image of Old Irish Villagín With Sheeps And Stone Walls basically overruns its reputation#and the islands have leaned hard into the tourism and portraying themselves as True Irish Old Villages or whatever#and thus settles the situation where like. everything about the islands pander to the tourists#the islands themselves are not doing well as places to live iirc#aging population people moving away lack of amenities and funding and resources that arent Tourism#its a gaeltacht but the tourism business mandates knowing english etc etc etc lotsa shit#like i had a school friend from an island and she was always unreachable on breaks bcos the island didnt have wifi#SO! the islands around ireland suffer from lack of facilities while bending to tourism bcos they gotta#BACK 2 BANSHEES to be clear inisherin isnt an actual island but it was filmed on inish mór and very clearly based on the arans#i like the island setting bcos of the sense of isolation it gives i think it was a good choice for the movie#HOWEVER its like. you know the thing where all irish media needs to be set in the old times#when we were all wearing aran wool jumpers and playing our little instruments and being cute historical dotes#yeah. that. compounded with the aran islands wicked having to play into that in the present day#like banshees itself isnt that bad an offender. the island setting just makes it more obvious and you could tick lines off on a bingo sheet#(shoutout to the obligatory civil war reference)#where was i going with this. im tired of weird 'back when ireland was ireland' shit being Thee thing to make art abt#this is why young offenders is the best piece of irish cinema this decade. i need to rewatch the young offenders

sure wish governments gave actual time to let the general public actively respond to a potential law change…. Like idk.. instead of it just being in the news, actively redirect people to the government website about it so that meaningful and constructive conversations can be had so that the laws aren’t broken upon release, or even yet scrapped entirely if they get overwhelmingly negative feedback.
#About the whole banning social media for anyone under 16.#apparently you need to make a inquiry submission ASAP that’s at least 2 pages long and even then I didn’t know it closed today#Like SURELY for a big potential change in law like this you’d ACTUALLY ALLOW TIME FOR PEOPLE to respond and engage constructively about the#Subject….but no I think they just want to tick it off the bucket list so they can move on#If you really cared about young folks using social media maybe ask them what THEY think first and actually#Talk to them like a normal human being. will say it is SO challenging to capture liams voice. when i was rewatching it on my bday w my friend i was STILL noticing things . character dialogue is so complex and i NEED to perfect it or ill collapse into the ground
#like i noticed that like. his 'optimism' is USUALLY rephrased pessimism almost?#most notablel example being when amelia asks if hes ok wearing the cast and he says 'its fine ill get used to it'#which like. i think ppl overplay him not verbalizing his emotions#which i think he TECHNICALLY does but not in the way people depict it?#hes not trying to Spare people the Concern#it comes across more like. frustration that hes TRYING to be optimistic about .but its poorly executed#as the series goes on it only gets more complex#also when hes talking to bryce in ep 6 he talks slower than usual? which i Tried to capture in that earlier aart from today#he also kinda does it in ep 10? but i think he gets indignant enough that it like. the frustration overpowers any despair#and he ends up talking FASTER actually.#also i will say that liam talks like. surprisingly Detailed ? but still concise#always think about his decription of the waiting room#and also him saying that bryce being 'complicit ticks [him] off'#its such a Specific way to describe it ?? if that makes sense??#like he REALLY often phrases things Well and it comes across kinda odd#but also. thatperson has said hed name a cat 'smth practical. like fluffy'#which i mention a LOT but look. i think it so well captures the way he Goes About Things#so even when hes frustrated he STILL details things like. practically#anyway yea . yea.#a few years back i saw someone make like. a character writing guide for another series i like#and sometimes i think itd be SO fun to make smth like that for liam. maybe even other one characters
