HOW IS IT DECEMBER ALREADY WTHECK
The Last Session #1 - Jasmine Walls & Dozerdraws
Roll for initiative! Jay, Lana, Drew, Walter, and Shen have played Dice & Deathtraps together since high school. Now, on the verge of graduating college and scattering, they've decided to finally complete their unfinished first campaign. But when Jay's partner Cassandra joins as a new player, Lana's afraid the party won't ever finish their quest...
Red Sonja 2021 Holiday Special - Mirka Andolfo, Luca Blengino & Zulema Lavina
An all-new She-Devil tale, from ongoing Red Sonja architect MIRKA ANDOLFO and a cavalcade of creators! The grim Sonja is not one for ebullient festivities. But her recent "adoption" of the mysterious child Sitha has (temporarily) melted her defenses, just in time for revelry. But will outside forces aiming to prod and pillage put a pause on the party? By MIRKA ANDOLFO (Sweet Paprika)!
Maniac Of New York: The Bronx Is Burning #1 - Elliott Kalan & Andrea Mutti
After the tragedy of The Death Train, Detective Zelda Pettibone and mayoral aide Gina Greene have lost the trail of the Maniac - and the support of the city. Copycats are springing up, tensions are high and traffic is a nightmare. So, what happens when your favorite unstoppable, mindless killer resurfaces in a Bronx high school? Can Zelda and Gina get there before Maniac Harry adds to his body count? Will the stu-dents tear their attention away from their phones long enough to notice there's a mon-ster in the halls?
Magic The Gathering: Master Of Metal # 1 - Mairghread Scott, Jorge Coehlo & Various
When the fate of the Multiverse is at stake, what game will the scheming Master of Metal play? Tezzeret of Esper, the cruel artificer now free from his former master Nicol Bolas, the God-Pharaoh of Amonkhet, has traveled across the Multiverse seeking the answer to a question only he knows. Once he finds it, he will manipulate anyone necessary and do whatever it takes to claim his prize... but to what end?
King Of Spies #1 (of 4) - Mark Millar & Matteo Scalera
The world's greatest secret agent has six months to live. Does he die quietly in a hospital bed, or does he make up for a lifetime of bad decisions? He's been propping up an unfair system for over forty years. Now he knows where all the bodies are buried and has nothing to lose when he turns his guns on everyone who ever made a buck creating the mess we're in right now.
Evil Ernie #1 - Scott Lobdell & Ariel Medel
After ERNEST GLECKMAN is mortally wounded, he discovers he must "pay down his new lease on life" by serving as a part time fixer for a death cult. Each time he manifests his dark side as EVIL ERNIE it becomes harder to maintain his tenuous grip on his inherently good humanity. ERNEST GLECKMAN is a good kid with exceptional grades in his senior year at college...his only quirk is the rock band he sings in every Saturday night. He enjoys the rock esthetic and "dressing the role" if not acting like a nihilistic punk. All that is changed when he assumes the role of... EVIL ERNIE who is the polar opposite of ERNEST. ERNIE is vicious and cruel and sadistic as he employs all manner of torture or murder (or oft-times both!) against his targets.
Animal Castle #1 - Xavier Dorison & Felix Delep
On the Farm all animals were equal. In the Castle some are more equal than others. For fans of the bestselling Stray Dogs and the Eisner Award winning Beasts of Burden comes an animal fable at once familiar and surprising! You may think you know the story but set aside your assumptions, this animal uprising is unlike any you have read! Nestled in the heart of a farm forgotten by men, the Animal Castle is ruled with an iron hoof by President Silvio. The bull and its dog militia savor their power, while the other animals are exhausted by work, until the arrival of the mysterious Azelard, a traveling rat who will teach them the secrets of civil disobedience.
Thud #1 - Bryan Peabe Odiamar
Bo is a creative in his early 30s living in Oakcago. Lately, he's been feeling apathetic, directionless, and tired of the repetitive nature of his life. In the midst of his confusion, the one constant in his life has been a comic book character that he created and has drawn since he was a kid. An accident will change everything he thinks he knows.
What’re you picking up for the first week of December, Fantomites?

for the ask meme 1-7 for nox and the rest for xavier
Oh hell yeah!! (putting some of this behind a cut in case it's long)
What perk would they give the player?
The Chariot: When Nox is a companion, you gain a boost to your base movement speed, and low level enemies may flee from you. However, you take -1 LCK and speech checks have a chance to be influenced by her Terrifying Presence.
How do you recruit them? are there multiple methods?
Nox may be recruited through accepting the quest Dead or Alive. The NCR is offering 1000 caps for Nox's head or capture. If you accept, Nox will find you herself and you can try to fight her, or agree to help her run stolen NCR guns for the Westside Militia. If you choose the latter option, she becomes available as a permanent companion.
What raises and lowers their affinity?
Raises Affinity: doing quests for Westside, North Vegas and Freeside. [The biggest boost comes from completing Red Lucy's quest]
Loses Affinity: helping the NCR or Brotherhood of Steel. When her affinity reaches 0, if you cannot pass a speech check, she will kill you outright.
How do they react to certain things? what do they say? (eg. lockpicking, grabbing junk, killing?)
Looting [body]: "Do not waste time. We must keep moving.” / "Keep your caps. However, if you find any eggs..."
Hacking: "Next time, allow me to take care of the computer work. I shall grow old waiting on you."
Killing non-hostile: "Be cautious whom you go making enemies with."
Do they periodically give the player items? what kind of items?
Nox will occasionally give a free healing powder if asked. Once a day, you may request to pet Stink, her gila monster, and he will provide you a temporary +1 to a random attribute.
Would they be able to do specialised task? (eg. repairs, hacking)
She's the Hackerman, and can provide access to any locked terminal.
Would they be romancable?
This is the most important question... But yeah, after completing her companion quest there would be a route towards being able to flirt/romance.
Romancing Nox would be a bit different though. She has a bigger heart than she lets on, but her approach to relationships is unconventional. While she’s had a lot of flings, she hasn’t ever been in a serious, committed relationship.
now for Xavier:
Do they have a unique outfit or weapon?
Xavier always wears his leather jacket, army pants and camo bandana. He also has a unique 10mm pistol: X's 10mm. This was his sidearm before the bombs fell.
What would be their personal quest, if they have one?
I don't have one for FNV Xav yet, but his post-game fo4 one is:
Old Revolutions: Help Xavier make peace with his past. While he hasn't truly accepted the deaths of his best friend, his mother and his sister, Xavier realizes needs to find some kind of closure. He will ask the player to travel north with him, to try and reach his mother's house in Muskeg Lake and give what proper goodbye he can.
What are their opinions on certain factions? (eg. brotherhood, NCR)
Xavier doesn't vibe with most factions. He worked with the Minutemen and Railroad until post-game, but had problems with their methods and limited ideas on who deserves helping.
In his Courier AU he works for the NCR but becomes disillusioned with them quickly, and goes AWOL and joins up with the Followers.
General voice lines? (in reaction to companion wheel selections)
(Gonna just pick a few of these to save on space)
Stealth: {to himself, quietly} "Just like old times."
Be Passive: "Of course. I'm not looking for a fight."
Be Aggressive: {hesitantly} "If you say so..."
Wait Here: "Lucky thing I brought that book... Wait-- Ah good, there it is. Whew. Anyway bye."
Follow Me: "Ooh, I love road trips."
Send Them to the Lucky 38: "Can't wait to sleep in a real bed for a change. Do hotels still have cable?"
Where would you find them in the world?
Xavier can be found either in Starlight Drive-Inn, out behind the movie screen. Alternately, you can find him in Freeside, hosting a midnight showing of a Space Trip holotape, projected on the side of one of the abandoned buildings.
Which game would they be from?
I have versions of him in both Fallout 4 and New Vegas.

––– i believe that is EVALISTA ROCÍO , the LADY IN WAITING of NABAR. they are twenty seven years old and are known to be very ambitious & onerous though they can also be very vengeful & stubborn. they remind me of building walls around your heart, dark eyes and very dangerous, knowing you’ve won a battle before stepping into the fight.
hello!! it’s me, su, who have been joining imperialrp since 2017. i am addicted to this rp and i am happy to be back here. go under read more to read about my baby eva, she’s a supporter of the bastard king and wants some spicy connections! / @imperialstarters
i. statistics.
here
ii. history.
HOUSE ROCÍO
house rocío is not the wealthiest families in nabar, however they possessed a strong militia power. fathers, sons, and daughters have all served in the army or court and fought in wars and political games for the greater good of the kingdom for generations.. they are a house of fiercely loyal, devoted, and proud people. they do, however, have a speck of taint in their reputation. that being their cruel and sometimes sadistic ways to secure means of power and influence within the court, and underhanded ways to get things done. despite this, they are of quite prominent standing.
when the dispute between the two brothers broke, house rocío was quick to choose their side. it was with the bastard older brother that they stood with. believing in the elder brother’s potentials to be the greater ruler between the two, the house rocío is steadfast in their support for the king esau bastos who they proclaimed as the one true king of nabar and the other : the impostor.
to this day, they are still one of king esau’s strongest supporters.
EVALISTA ‘EVA’ ROCÍO
evalista was born in the house rocío, an old mansion built with large slabs of rocks by the rivers, that runs just a tad too cold at night, and evalista let the cold seeps from the stone floors to her bare feet and to the deep ends of her heart, just like everyone did in this family.
father had a plan for her, as he did everyone in the family. father might be an unscrupulous character and he might be a harsh an authoritative figure in the household but his eyes see no gender and it mattered not that he had no sons yet. his daughters will carry on the rocío name.
when a son finally come a few years after ella’s birth, the treatment towards his two eldest daughters did not change. all of the rocío kids received the same standard of education. they were taught in literature and politics and was expected to be familiar with the saddle and the swords — something evalista truly enjoyed.
mother married into the family, so sometimes it’s a bit hard for her. sometimes the house gets a bit too cold for her. perhaps that’s why she passed on early, shortly after delivering her baby brother xavier, the last of the rocío children. evalista was fifteen by then, and though she loved her mother, she also loathed how evalista always turned her eyes away from her and seemingly distant from the rest of her family. her death was not missed by much in that cold house.
LADY SEVILLE
the war is something truly vivid in evalista’s memories. she was already sixteen by then and arranged to be married to the lord seville. father thought it a good match. he was not the heir to the dukedom, which would allow more freedom for his daughter and whatever ploy the house rocío is up to in the future.
at the urges of her father, her marriage to the seville was ushered forward. both her and her groom was entirely too young to be wed, just kids in a game of chess, only difference is evalista was entirely in control of the situation and consented to it. she was seventeen back then but she remembered the look on her young groom’s face vividly; he was probably the same age as hers, yet his eyes were soft and his gait entirely different than evalista. she thought, oh! how delightful, he seems easy to control. despite having no say in the marriage, evalista was content with her father’s choice.
from then on, evalista was known as the lady seville and moved from the cold family house by the rivers, hidden away by thick foliage and into the sun.
evalista didn’t know much about her husband but there would be time to learn and she intended to learn as much as she could, for ignorance is only a fool’s game.
LADY EVALISTA ROCÍO OF THE QUEEN’S SERVICE
despite the impeccable scheme his father had put in motion for evalista, when the king of nabar passed away, all was pushed into disarray. with the two brothers fighting for their claim to the throne, the family must make a choice.
house rocío chose to stand with the true son of the king, who they put their faith in and believed to be the better choice for king, as he possessed the qualities of a great ruler. this effectively put them in conflict with the house seville.
evalista promptly requested for a divorce after declaring her allegiance to the bastard king. her husband’s family, in order to save himself from the embarrassment, instead annulled their marriage and sent their children out of the seville house. evalista didn’t mind this, one way or another, she had achieved her goal.
at twenty years of age, evalista was stripped from her title as the lady of seville and the rocío house rallied forces to fight with the king esao for his rightful place in the throne of nabar. in the midst of a great war, nabar was fighting internally, and it costed the rocío family their eldest son. lorentz fell in the civil war, fighting in the frontlines, and it only steeled their resolve even more. they had to win this. the cause became more personal for them more than ever.
evalista entered the queen’s service and kissed the ring on her finger, a display of her undying support and devotion to her and swore that she would do what it takes to see that esao bastos is crowned the king of all nabar and to stand by his queen’s side.
iii. wanted connections.
if you’ve read up ‘till here, might as well leave ‘miss americana’ or some hearts in the comment and i’ll give u a surprise too ; )
former husband : of house seville (NABAR). perhaps the second of third born, definitely not up for the dukedom seat. should be around the same age as evalista. would support the SOUTH NABAR. their chemistry and history during the marriage can be discussed, i don’t have a set idea for it yet and i want to give you space to explore your own character — this also goes for their children / if they have any during their marriage or not and who has them now. / reserved for blossom.
information broker: someone she goes to for information from places the ears of a noble can’t reach. probably a shady character, but UTP.
hired hand: someone she hires to do her dirty jobs for her, offing someone, cleaning up her mess, getting rid of inconveniences. is either motivated by money or loyalty to the house rocío.
mentor: i don’t think she’s TERRIBLY good at swordfight but she definitely can hold her own if the situation calls for it. this is someone who taught her the sword, i think her father would train her personally as well, but for the most part it will be this person. can ALSO be someone she just met and decided to brush up her skills with so she doesn’t get rusty.
toxic relationship: a lost flame. probably happened after her marriage until recently. you’re a heartbreaker and she’s not a docile little lamb, no matter how much she liked to play the part. you’re mean and she’s twice as vicious and your relationship is a roller coaster of emotions and toxicity. your passion and love for one another burns brighter than anything else, it’s no wonder it burns faster than lightning too. / taken by petal
the mandatory childhood friend

Jake Reviewcaps Stuff: X-Men Evolution: The X-Impulse
Two of the series most popular characters, and one of its’ more popular ships: Jean and Xavier try to lead kitty away from charming asshole Avalanche whose trying to use her for crimes, but have trouble due to having taken stupid pills before this episode. Meanwhile Kurt and Scotty follow Logan as he confronts Sabertooth for the first time and gets cars thrown at him. No really. Abusive Romance, Flying Cars, and probable Gilmore Girls refrences under the cut.
So yeah i’m doing another one already. This pace MIGHT slow eventually, as I want to get through the show faster.. but this episode gave me a ton of material to work with so I wanted to strike while the iron was hot. So as I mentioned last time the show started with slowly shoveling characters in one at a time, giving each time for focus and to breathe a bit. So with Nightcrawler and Toad out of the way it’s time for Shadowcat and Avalanche.. who happen to be one of the biggest ships for this show.. and also one some don’t like. Me, i’ll form an opinon as I go as I don’t remmeber much of them together other than him trying to join the x-men in one episode, so we’ll see. For now it’s time for some X-Impulse. Wait isn’t impulse dc? Is there a marvel character named that too?
Yup there is! Two in fact, but somehow one is x-men related. This is impulse a member of the Shiar imperial guard I entirely forgot about because there’s like 40 or 50 diffrent members and he’s not one of hte more promeinet ones. For those who’ve never heard of these guys there the elite superpowered muscle for the Shiar Empire, an intergalactic empire whose former empress Charles Xavier dated for a while after dethroning her brother and who serve either as allies to our heroes or people for them to beat up depending on if someone sane is in charge that day or not, and who often have members killed to show off some new baddy, hence why there’s been three impulses apparently.
Their based on the less military, more heroic and more fleshed out if still hugely sized, legion of superheros from dc, which Guard co-creator David Cockrum was one of the most famous artists for and originally actually CREATED Nightcrawler as a legionnaire, but he was rejected for being too demonic and thankfully recycled into the rougish religious elf we know today. The Guard were as far as I can tell made as a wink and a nod toward that and a gentle jab at the competition and is far from the first or last time either side would make characters based on the other side. I also bring up the Shiar because despite being a sizeable part of the X-Men mythos in the comics.. they’ve BARELY been used outside them. Cartoon wise only the 90′s series used them, though to be fair....
youtube
Given Evolution had both hinted at exterterstials apparently, and was planning on doing the Phoenix Saga in season 5, so they MIGHT have used them eventually, but I somehow doubt it and WOlverine and the X-Men didn’t live long enoguh to even consider it. As for the movies they were considered too ungrounded for them and thus were basically exiled from appearing on film for 20 years. Now the Shi’ar aren’t perfect characters, the fact before he took the throne himself Gladiator would just obey whatever assshole took the reigns due to some misguided loyalty didn’t help, but they could be used intrestingly and the guard are at least intresting in a fight, so it is a shame they couldn’t be used till recently and hopefully with the fox merger the mcu will put them to use at some point. Also for those curious if they showed up in any other cartoons.. nope. According to wikipedia, their mentioned in Avengers; Earth’s Mighteist Heroes (Which will also be covered here some day) and Legion (probably too though also probably not episode by episode if I do), and show up in two of the video games, with Ultimate Alliance being the biggest role outside of the 90′s cartoon from the looks of it, having the well, alliance, head to shiar space to get the mkrann crystal and battle with the guard and deathbird. Anyway, i’ve spent enough time on this weird sidebar, let’s get on with the actual episode! We open with a pretty good scene. We meet Kitty Pryde, your average teen whose having a weird flying nightmare.. emphasis on weird as it is a bit wonky, but the idea is fine enough.. as is the result where she finds herself having fallen to the basement and FELT it, her panicked parents coming down and Kitty only being able to sob about having fell, her mom putting it off to sleepwalking.. until her dad notices her pillow and blanket fused into the celing above, which only makes the poor girl more upset. It’s a good, tense scene and a reminder that wether your mutant powers are benign or not.. having them awaken can still be traumatic as hell, and uses this world NOT having them be a public concern well: Kitty has NO IDEA what’s happening to her, no one to turn to and is understandabily terrified. For all she knows her body is breaking down and she might not be tangible again, not an unresonable fear given her comics counterpart once ended up in that very situation due to taking some heavy damage in battle from an energy charged harpoon.. from a guy named harpoon because even Claremont had an off day with names sometimes. My point is it’s a very good scene. Naturally Charles notices from cerebro.. and with a weird computer thing that somehow fully researchs who she is because tha’ts not creepy, but It is somewhat understandable. Cue the credits. We then get a REALLY pointless throwaway scene with Kurt, now having’ been at school for long enough to be late several times apparently, late again and running into Mystique, in her guise as principal before Scott thankfully rescues him. Why Mystique is confronting her son like this I dunno, but what I really don’t is why this scene is here at all. It could’ve easily been replaced with a throaway line about Charles only wanting to have one student miss midterms or not wanting to arouse too much suspcion with the facultiy by taking too many of the kids out of school. Instead we just get this scene to establish their home. And yes they could’ve just needed to fill out the episode.. but there’s plenty of ways, that i’ll mention later, this minute of screentime could’ve been used better and we really didn’t need a whole scene of them to set up that they’d be home for their subplot this episode. Back in scene’s that actually matter, Kitty is trying to sneak off to school but her mom stops her, with her family apparently having agreed to keep her home but Kitty just wants some normalcy and her family won’t even talk about it, so her mom relucntantly agrees. I can’t blame Kitty: even if it’s a terrible idea to go to school while she has no idea what’s happening to her and can’t control it as far as she knows.. she’s also a scared kid whose body is changing in ways she can’t fully grasp, and unlike puberty, which mutation is a mild metaphor for, there’s no deep years of study on it or how it changes a body: she has no idea what’s going on and just wants to grasp onto SOMETHING normal while she’s clearly not. It’s some well done character stuff. Meanwhile Jean and Chuck are on their way to what i’m assuming is that same old place, sweet home Chicago since that’s where Kitty is from in the comics and they had to fly there anyway. Jean questions why her.. out of the three junior x-men so far she’s the least intresting. Charles explains he thinks she can reach Kitty which.. makes some sense. Jean is uber popular at school, easy to get along with and endlessly nice, so she’s a good choice. Another likely part of it, and why not scott, is scott’s powers: it’s a lot easier to sell her parents on powers doing good with someone who can lift objects versus someone whose constantly cursed to never open his eyes, and this way kurt has his buddy back home so he dosen’t feel lonely his first time without his new dad. Now granted I question why STORM didn’t come with them, as she seems like a good choice and it’d be a nice nod to her bond with kitty in the comics, but I suspect it was simply easier to just have two x-men to focus on. Maybe she was busy getting Evan for two episodes down the line...
youtube
So then we get.. Charles being really, REALLY dumb.. like out of character dumb. See in the comics when the X-Men came to recurit kitty, they all came in civlian clothes, though ironically Jean wasn’t with them for the initial meeting because even more ironically she, Scott and Kurt were split off into their own group to try and recruit Dazzler, and Charles was nice and polite about it and promoted the school as well. a school. Granted Kitty’s parents didn’t know about her phasing here and Emma Frost was also trying to recurit kitty for HER school for gifted youngsters.. but still, there’s NO reason for Charles not to use that sort of pitch to get into the door, especially since as we learn in the scene after this Kitty’s a straight A student, retaining her deep intelgence from the comics, so there’s an easy foot in the door before he drops the mutant part in. Instead he just casually mentions he tracked her that he’s diffrent and comes off really fucking creepy and naturally they say fuck no to that. LIke.. how do they know he’s not with the goverment or forming a teen militia or just a pedophile who happens to be a mutant.. they do not and their already scared. So chuck gets a well earned door to the face. And thus I get to introduce a new running gag: The Chuck, you Blockhead, Count,. Now granted the obvious name may be the xavier is a jerk count, which i’ll probably also do but that’s more for being an asshole, like he often is due to poor writing or currently pragmatisim in the comic. No no this is for when Chuck is just out an out an idiot. Plus I love a good Charlie Brown refence so Chuck, You Blockhead Count: 2 It’s at 2 since we also have last episode where Toad showed up with his own uniform, and attacked kurt.. and Charles did nothing and questioned nothing about that. And now I mentioned that other count Xavier is Jerk Count: 1 The Scott thing is more in character but for having his test be.. have a grown woman chase a teenager with Lightning. Storm was involved too but I doubt she’ll be an asshole as much so she’s safe for now. So having throughly botched it Xavier decides to have them split up, gang: Xavier will go to social services to find out more about lance since he’s an orphan, while Jean will infiltrate the school. Now while watching this I questioned why no one in school at all questioned a random teenager they never met roaming the halls.. but odds are jean just used her telepathy to either make anyone who saw her think she belonged there or masked her self from them seeing her, the latter being a signiture move of both jean and her teen self brought to the present because complicated bollocks, so fair enough. I also thought charles was just fucking off but accoridng to the wiki he was at social services, so he avoids another count and was doing something useful, checking on lance before he tries to offer him a spot: both to make sure he’s a good fit after last week’s debacle and figure out the best course to legaly take the boy in if so, and if not knowing charles still find the kid a home anyway because even if he’s not x-man yet, he’s still a child in need asshole or not and Charles is a good man. Such a good man he had to be told 9 timelines ended in utter disaster and ruin for mutantkind for him to even humor breaking from his dream according to recent comics, and according to Moira’s notes STILL took a good 15 years in universe of attempted genoicdes , 1 actual genocide and his people being reduced to a nub to finally cave and even THEN he admits he still loves humanity and wants them to be better. While I did put up an xavier is a jerk count just now at his best Charles Xavier is a good if flawed man who, while prone to ocasionally making utterly terrible decisions, loves both humans and mutants and just wants peace in our time and only created the x-men to foster it. Meanwhile back at the ranch her mansion, Logan.. senses sabertooth.. I mean even with Logan’s adept sense of smell, I question how he could smell him over the exaust of Sabertooth’s goofy metalic penis, aka his own motorcycle, but it IS part of his mutant powers. Either that or they just have a magic force bond like Rey and Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy.. minus the sexual tension and forced face turn for the latter.. maybe just minus the forced face turn. So Logan prepares to go fight his rival, and suits up for the first time. and while it’s in a black void for.. some reason it looks REALLY badass and really gives gravatas to seeing wolverine in costume for the first time. And since he’s one of ONLY two looks to look at this episode, since Kitty and Lance don’t get their uniforms this episode, let’s talk about it.
I fucking love it. Like Kurt’s it’s basically his comic’s costume but slightly modified.. but unlike Kurt it’s a diffrent costume than last time, going with his cool brown look that he wore for quite some time in the comics, though made a bit more orange. However it honestly STILL looks fantastic and I get wanting to go with a color that’s a bit more eyepopping in the more muted tones of Evolution. It just looks fantastic and i’ts nice to see a cartoon use an alternate costume for a character as their main look. Logan passes a returning from school Scott and Kurt, who decide to follow him and after debating which car, Scott gestures them to his.. which is scott’s sports car from bot the previous series and the comics. Why a 17 year old has this, I can only assume because Chuck is a really good dad, really rich.. and likely knows having a bunch of teenagers around means if one of them DOSEN’T have hteir own car they’ll be borrowing his rolls royce all the time and this way he can have his nights after training free to smoke a blunt with logan while they watch the next generation and eat a pile of cheeseburgers the children dropped off while crusing around out of his lack of hair, you know why you give your teenager a car in the first place.
Anyways while Kurt and Scott buddy up and go on an excellent adventure, with Kurt even bamfing inside and god I love this dynamic. So fucking adorable. But anyways while that’s going on, Kitty is at school being mocked by two alpha bitches for being sad despite her grades then is shoved in a locker. When then meet Lance, soon to be known as avalanche and the other mutant at school who decides to graffito tag the place.. in the laziest but somehow still coolest way possible by just taking his spray can and spraing one long streak along the lockers. Not as neat as doing an actual tag but it does more petty dumbfuckery faster so fair play to him. Kitty begs him to let her out.. before her powers trigger again. She tries denying it when he comments on them being cool.. before he shows off his own, making the earth move under his feet, though not the sky tumbling down a tumbling down.. that’s Storm’s job. It shakes the lockers and Kitty rather than be impressed, runs like hell. But yeah, I get the feeling, even with him having evil plans for her right after.. that he does feel some attraction to her here. And as I made clear i’ts not shipping goggles.. the way he acts.. he’s elated to meet someone else with powers, to after likely being pinballed around foster care and treated like shit by his piers over it and then finding out he has a special power but is still seen as a weirdo even by his minons.. he’s elated. It’s what draws him to her: that for once he’s NOT alone, and there’s someone else to revel in the sheer power and joy he feels using his powers and even though she runs he vows he’s gonan rock her world. Since we’re where a commerical break would be, I figure now’s a good time to talk about Lance. In the comics he had a diffrent name entirely, and avalanche was more of a one note villian who later became a retired bar owner. Here he takes bits, the long metal hair and love of his powers, from Rictor, a more heroic mutant in the comics who only started out doing crimes because he was forced to and quickly joined the original x-men’s class of mutants the x-terminators before joining the new mutants and later x-force. He’s also , as you probably know, one fo the x-men’s most prominent gay mutants, but while hinted at in comics made before this series was fully canonized years after, and like iceman who came out even later, there was no way of knowing that at the time, so it made since to use him as partial template here. It also makes sense not to use the rictor name as while it makes more sense given the earthquake motif, Avalanche is an actual villian.. and you know the obvious fact that Lance is white and Julio Richter.. is not. Granted they COULD’VE made him latino, and used sunspot for spike to ballnce it out representation wise, but this was the early 2000′s and they cared about as much for repesentation as Jeph Loeb does. Hopefully Rictor gets an adpatation at some point outside of Logan, but I get why not here.
On with the show. Kitty shows up late for track due to thing one and thing two, and has to run first and trips, while on the nearbye rooftops Lance and his two goons try to break into the administration building to get test answers. They don’t as Lance notices an alarm, and while one of his goons asks why he dosen’t just quake a hole in, Lance points out the obvious: If there’s obvious tampering they’ll just change the test answers.. and since he knows about kitty now, he has a better way and when questioned rather than explain her powers, he just shakes rattles and rolls. He also makes one of Kitty’s bullies trip but it only scares her further. I”m getting. serious heathers vibes here jesus.. I mean Lance isn’t nearly as bad as Jason Dean but still jesus. I need to listen to more of that musical good stuff.
Kitty retreats from her admierer/stalker to teh autitorim, where Jean finds her.. given Jean again slipped in here without no o ne noticing and no one came after kitty , i’m thinking she use her telepathy to mask anyone from seeing Kitty come in and seeing Jean at all so she could talk in private. Granted Lance shows up right after, but odds are Jean didn’t notice him and thus didn’t think to shield him and probably isn’t up to Charles level where he can create a psychic blindspot in an entire crowd. Anyways Jean tries to comfort kitty who’s still angsting about her powers and again hard to blame her when the only other mutant she’s met is a budding psychopath whose idea of a romantic gesture is injuring one of her enmiies for her. Jean does try to calm her down, first showing she’s a mutant and admitting she was freaked out too when she got her powers.. and given most depcitions of jean getting her powers are far from plesant that tracks. She does however make the mistake of telling Kitty, already figuring this is some sort of trick and jean will throw a puppy across the room to also try and get in her pants or something, that she’s a telepath and Kitty screams at her to get out of her head. Jean truly is taking after her mentor in thef ucking up department. Lance then shows up as I mentioned earlier, and tells Jean to backoff and that’ she’s mine and you get it. Oh and as a side note Jean DOES admit to having read Kitty’s mind so she CAN read minds, and likely has gotten a surface level look of duncan’s thoughts which I feel go a little something like this mnus the actual context of when the song’s going on.
youtube
Lance then finds kitty, whose changed into her regular outift and promises not to use his powers this time, admitting he too felt lost and scared, and wants to help her take control and help her.. and while it is partly for his own petty scheme.. I do genuinely think he means part of that, that he does genuinely wnat her and want someone like him by his side.. it’s just in his warped head doing crime and whatever he wants is the right thing to do, that control means using this power to knock down whoever’s in your way and TAKE what you deserve.
Jean instead phones xavier and both agree that if lance fully gets his hooks in her they might never reach her and Xavier tells him to stay on her and that she can overcome lance as an obstacle.. and then bemoans that some obastacles are more annoying than others as the social services building has a large stone staircas,e a nice quip and they beat the ulitmate universe to that joke by a few years.
Meanwhile our two best buds track Wolvie to a car park because fuck if I know why he decided to make his stand there. Probably because the writers had a cool action scene in mind as we’ll see, but it still comes off dumb though given how every other x-man has been acting this episode it tracks. Anyway Sabertooth strolls up on his demonic wang-shang-a-lang,
Seriously I mocked it before but it bears repeating. While Wolvie has a normal looking, if still badass, bike Sabertooth’s.. looks like something Skeltor would ride after he man. It Looks like warlock is horribly stucki n the form of a motorcycle. It looks like the kind of bike on some random asshole the bikers from sons of anarchy would beat up forposing. It looks like he stole it from the biker mice from mars. It looks like the polution from it’s exaust alone is the reason big bird die. it looks like Creed just brought it off the joker and remonded it. It looks like something the battletoads bought and regretted. It looks like ghost rider’s first trike. it looks like Tooth lost his dick in a horrible acciden tand is compensating with theree metalic ones. It looks like something the BAND creed sold to victor creed here. It looks.. bad is what i’m saying. As for his actual outfit.. it’s okay,b asically his movie outfit with osme of the skin missing. That look isn’t my faviorite of his but it works to sell him as a savage monster and fits good with the more tactical less comic booky looks of this shows costumes.
Creed, the man not the band though he does look like the lead singer of creed, charges at Logan who simply pops his wheel while tooth falls off the roof.. and then the most rediculous and awesome part of the episode starts.... right after Scott’s car gets hit with the bike because what else did he think was going to happen when the fighting started. Sabertooth , who apparently has really good super strength in this universe, starts CHUCKING CARS UP THROUGH THE ROOF OF THE CAR PARK UP AT LOGAN. Points to the team while the setting for this fight is nonseical, it is WORTH IT for this, with great action as Logan dodges the cars bursting through the roof. it’s rediclous, over the top.. and UTTERLY spectacular and not just in a so bad it’s good way. Logan eventually slips through a car hole, a sentence i’d never thought i’d say mostly becasue that’s the moe syslack approved term for garages but it works well here too, and into the garage before sabertooth RAMS him with a car, ranting about it’s their “destiny” only one is left. Which seems like some weird “applying highlander logic to former goverment weapon mutants’ bollocks, but instead is foreshadowing for the end of the season. Nice touch. Scott and Kurt arrive, in uniform since even if he’s a bit more personably here, Scott still is no dummy, and they sucessfully save Logan, whose pissy about it because it was his buisness and all, but Kurt thinks he secretly loves them and Scott sarcastically agrees. Not a bad subplot and it makes up for a weird choice of battleground on logan’s cart iwth utter insanity. Fun stuff. Back at not so fun stuff, Kitty finds lance outside the office and takes him up on his offer, and he admits they ARE outsiders, there is something wrong with them.. but instead of moping about it, they can do something about it and revel in it. It really ties into Lance as a character: He’s probably felt, due to being an oprhan and not having a stable home life likely buffeted around foster care and acting out as a result, that he really is an outsider and his powers not only proved it.. but finally gave him POWER over all the people that cast him out. The power to take what he wanted and return what he got. The power to move you. He finally had power and he was going to make them pay for making him feel like he had none and wants Kitty to join him. And for a moment it works, kitty joyfully breaking in with him and actually enjoying her powers for the first time. Meanwhile kitty’s parents showed up, Jean having called them and somehow got them to listen.. and this is what I meant by that one minute earlier. We COULD have built up Kitty’s parents guilt and fear by having Charles approach them again.. and with them panicked over her not returning from school, have him explain what happened and help her father see how wrong he’d been to hide from it or had her argue with her dad then storm out. Instead they just show up here for the first time in almost 20 minutes so we could get a filler scene of kurt being late.
Anyways inside Lance steals the answers and Kitty is horrified to find out that “Gasp” the juvinele delinquent who hurt someone to impress her is doing BAD THINGS. Lance tries to change her grades but she refuses.. and then Jean and the Prydes show up, with Kitty’s dad admitting he was wrong, he shouldn’t of hid fro her power and shoudl’ve been a better parent.. better than her comics dad who got in bed with gangsters i’ll give him that. But Lance not wanting to loose his new sorta girlfriend knocks a bookcase on kitty and abusively tries to drag her with him.. while jean says if you go with him now, her powers will be a curse like she thought earlier... even though Kitty’s pretty terrified of lance right now and dosen’t actually want to go with him. it comes off like this bit from final space played entirely seriously
youtube
So yeah apparently I need this too...: God Dammit Jean Count: 3 The other two are for the telepath thing earlier and the duncan thing last episode. And given the duncan thing is going to be going on till season 3 yeah i’ll need this. I’ll probably also need a WHAT DOES SHE SEE HIM HIM COUNT, but i’m playing that one by ear. But yeah kitty does the obvious and breaks it off and phases out and Lance takes it well.. by trying to destory the entire school.. my god this really is heathers! Did .. did lance kill some popular kids before this? I have questions. Jean struggles to hold things up and worries about kitty, who falls under some ruble but charles assures her to focus: She can do this.. and as we seen Chuck likely sensed kitty who phases out and reuintes with her parents before rescuing them all. Kitty realizes her powers are a gift after all and says the x-men have her best intrest and heart and Charles finally decides to have an actual discussion with the prydes which had he had one might’ve helped this episode go faster. We then end on Lance, angry and hurt starring into the distance, when Mistque approaches in her principal disguise, saying there may be an opening for her and transforms ending with a great line “I have much to teach you, my avalanche”. Which ihs a better code name than Rictor when put like that credit where it’s do. And we’re out. Final Thoughts: This one was a bit of a step down as you could tell: The main core of Lance and Kitty IS really strong, being a good way to breifly touch on toxic relationships. If this gets better in season 2 I have no idea but it’s a compelling dynamic here, with Kitty being terrified of her power while Lance loves his and both are what prop this episode up alongside the fun car park fight and great dynamic with Kurt and Scott. HOwever what drags the episode down is EVERYONE but Kitty and Lance, who act in character, and Scott and Kurt, who had no idea logan was going into combat and were just curious what their cool teacher was up to acts like a fucking moron: Logan, rather than pick a fighting ground where he has an advantage chooses one where sabertooth can easily use stealth and gives him an opening too as well as a garage full of weapons that nearly ends him, Xavier decides just randomly revealing he knows where they live wiill impress scared parents, Jean decides telling someone she’s in their head is a great idea, Kitty’s parents think not talking about the thing tht just happened will make it disappear, which is at least realistic if nothing else, and Sabertooth thought that was a valid choice for a motorcycle. The climax is good but feels unearned and overall this episode could've neen fantstic but is bogged down by bits of stupid, but is still enjoyable thanks to it’s emotional core. Next time, whenever that is, another popular charcter arrives as we go Rogue. Until then, follow for more reviews, like this if you enjoyed it, send asks iwth suggestions for more shows and episodes to cover and until then, stay safe and stay mutant and proud.

Now that Kurt had wormed his way into the Brotherhood’s domain and was cozy with the Morlocks, Lance suggested one day expanding the school of boogaloo to everyone.

Deadly Mistake
Prompt: Hey, ❤ i'm love with your blog, especially your Gambit stories. Can you do a oneshot (when your Requests are open), where the reader (maybe she can control the darkness/daughter to Mystique and Magneto?) and Gambit are dating and one night, she can't control her powers and nearly killed him. She runs away to the Xavier Mansion but Remy is looking for her and they meet again. I hope it's not problem 😊
Warnings: near death experience?? maybe language? Running away...angst...?
Word Count: 2896
Notes: Thank you for this request! As soon as I got it, I started brainstorming. Gambit is like my closet love, idk why. Like, I’m not ashamed of him. I adore him. I just don’t talk about it much...Lol...Anyway, Of course it’s not a problem darling! So sorry this took so long to get back to you! I really hope this lives up to your expectations.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“No, no please don’t…” you moaned in your sleep, clearly distressed. Remy was alerted to your tossing and turning, and now your verbal fight against the thing in your nightmare.
“Mon Cherie?” Remy asked, sitting up, attempting to wake you, but he just gripped your sweat soaked body, his attempt to wake you futile.
“Let me go. Let me go! Let me go!” you screamed repeatedly. Images of men grabbing you, taking you away to hurt you, to experiment on you…
“Darlin’. It’s me, Remy, wake up,” he urged again, trying to jostle you. Finally, you jolted upright, but not thanks to your boyfriend. The nightmare had reached its peak and you woke up screaming, clenching the sheets, your heart hammering in your chest as the world around you enveloped in black, your panic attack releasing your power. Your pulse was racing, your head spinning. The nightmare had terrified you, it felt so real, you could feel pain and fear. The more you recalled the dream, the stronger your powers became, the air around you growing blacker and blacker.
On the outside of your cloud, sat Remy, trying to find you. Your cloud was darkening your bedroom that was saturated with moonlight only moments ago, but now...now your bedroom was as black as squid ink.
“Y/N, sweetheart?” he tried to get out as his arms flailed around wildly, trying to find you, but his senses were cut off. The darkness behaving like smoke, making it difficult for him to breathe or find his bearings. He reached where you should’ve been, but he felt a wall.
“Must be the headboard,” he thought to himself as his hands tried to find their way in the dark, but with every passing second, his oxygen was depleting. “Y/N, please! Where are you?!” he rasped out, terrified you were scared, or hurt somehow.
But you couldn’t hear him, the darkness was closing in all around you, shielding you from any outside danger, but not being able to see, hear, or feel Remy made you panic further. Your alarm revitalized the adrenaline and the vicious cycle continued, worried that you were hurting Remy, your powers doubled, making the air outside thicker and unable to breathed in.
Remy clawed at the darkness, the smoke-like substance that you could always create (but had very little control over) trying to get it away from him, away from his lungs...but it was futile. Your powers were erratic and strong as your hysteria continued, too much for him to conquer. A few more moments of the strangling concoction and he was forced to succumb to its power.
After a few more minutes of you finally trying to calm yourself down and succeeding a bit, the blackness receded, the moonlight’s silvery haze illuminating your shared master bedroom. You turned to tell Remy that you were okay now, but as you turned, you saw his form lying beside you, motionless.
“Remy?” you asked quietly, hoping he was just sleeping, that your assessment was wrong. “Rem?” you tried again, shaking him. “Remy?!” you called with more fright than before, shaking him harder. The worst thoughts started to circulate in your head. Had you killed him?
You grabbed your compact mirror from your nightstand and held it to his nose, relieved beyond any measure when it fogged up. “Oh thank god,” you breathed. Now that you knew he was just passed out, you tried slapping his face some more, to get him to wake up...to no avail.
All too soon, your relief was shattered and replaced with guilt.
You’d done this.
This was your fault.
He more than likely had passed out due to smoke inhalation, and had you not calmed yourself in time, you could’ve killed him. Your powers usually had a mind of their own, sure, but...you’d never hurt Remy. Strangers that scared you, sure. Brutes in the dark alleys of New Orleans, yes. But never your loving, devoted boyfriend Remy. He always knew your powers weren’t exactly stable and he stood beside you for a long time. The two of you had been through a lot in just a little over a year and now...your mind could hurt him. Just because you didn’t know you were hurting him didn’t make it okay. It didn’t excuse the fact that you’d hurt him, the last person on earth you’d ever want to hurt...and tonight you nearly killed him.
Now you knew what you had to do. For Remy’s sake, you needed to leave. You couldn’t chance these damned powers of yours coming to life when they felt like it, just to strangle the life out of the person you loved most. Hurting like hell, your chest constricting at the very thought of leaving the love of your life, you knew this was for the best. He didn’t deserve this. Deserve to be with someone who could hurt him without even realizing it...He deserved a good woman. Tears pricked at your eyes but you swallowed them down and set to work.
Swiftly, you jumped up, grabbed your suitcases, threw essentials and a few outfits in the bag. When you were ready to go, you stared at Remy, beautiful Remy. The most charming, sweet, protective man you’d ever met. Granting yourself one final kiss, you leaned down slowly, touched your lips to his, the sensation sending a surge of heartbreak through you, causing hot tears to break through finally, unable to bear the thought of leaving him, and it being nearly physically impossible for you to move your legs to get away from him.
With a rock in your throat, a knot in your stomach and chest, and hot tears streaking rapidly down your face, you tossed your things in the car and started to drive. Calling 911 to tell them about Remy and that he’d had smoke inhalation on your way from your shared home. It would be hard to believe when they got there because there was nothing on fire, nothing charred...but they’d have to believe you. They just had to.
---------------------------------------
Minutes turned into hours and you seemed to be driving for who knows how long. All you knew was the sun had broken over the horizon and you needed something to keep you going so you pulled over at a diner and got coffee, orange juice, and a small bit of food. Before you just burned through gas and continued to travel the country in your pajamas, you needed a game plan. Where were you going to go? Where could you go? You could just throw a dart on a map...that seemed viable at this point. But you weren’t that type of person, you liked roots, a home. If you were going to spend a lifetime somewhere, it needed to be somewhere nice, homey, inviting. Someplace you looked forward to having a future at...even if it would be a lonely one...a future without Remy.
Fresh tears welled in your eyes before you wiped them away. The waitress refilled your coffee for the third time as you contemplated a place to go.
You considered calling your mom, Mystique, to see where she was, what she was up to. Probably doing something with Dad. Probably causing problems for the humans. Maybe you could call your Dad. He would never leave a mutant, let alone his own daughter out on the streets. But your dad would also probably try to recruit you, yet again, to join is militia and you just didn’t want that life. Not when you were so young and had so much ahead of you. Maybe if you were older, and didn’t have anything to look forward to, you’d risk it all, but not today.
That’s when it hit you. Dad. He had told you about Charles, the man who ran a school for mutants. You were certainly out of any sort of school age, but maybe he could help you nonetheless. To your knowledge, Xavier had never turned a soul away. How could he turn you away? Daughter of his oldest friends. It was worth a shot at the very least.
You paid the bill you’d racked up and set out, still in pajamas, towards New York.
-------------------------------
It took a long time, but you finally got to the home for gifted youngsters. You parked in the circular driveway, jumped out, ran up to the door, and knocked, only slightly embarrassed to be in your nightwear.
A blue man with glasses opened the door.
“Hello. Can I help you?” he asked politely.
“I’m Y/N. I’m Myst--Raven and Erik’s daughter,” you informed, hoping that meant something to this man.
The man’s eyes drifted down your form, as if he was trying to figure out whether or not he believed you.
“Yes, I’ve heard of you. Are you alright? Does he need our help?” he inquired.
“Uh, it’s not them that needs your help. It’s me.”
He nodded knowingly and stepped aside to let you in.
“I’m Hank McCoy. I’m one of the teachers here,” he greeted as he held out his hand. Which you took. “You look a little old to be here for classes. Do you know Charles?”
“I know of him, through my father. I know I’m not exactly the right age to be enrolling in classes but...I’m having trouble with my powers...I was wondering if you all could help. I don’t really have anywhere else to turn and I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
Hank nodded. “Of course. Come with me.”
You followed the big, furry, blue man through the huge mansion, to a study, where a man in a wheelchair sat. That must be the man Dad spoke so highly of.
“Charles,” Hank’s rough voice called.
The man whipped his head up. “And who do we have here?” he asked.
“This is Erik and Raven’s daughter,” Hank introduced. “Y/N.”
“Ah...Y/N. Your father has told me wonderful things about you. I hear you got a peculiar power, mmm?”
You nodded. “That’s actually why I’m here, sir. I...I need help controlling them.”
Charles nodded slowly, his eyebrows slowly rising as he dismissed Hank.
---------------
The two of you talked for a couple of hours. Charles wanted to know all about your upbringing, when your powers first started, if they ever changed over the years, everything there was to know about them. Finally, you were brought all the way up to last night, explaining how you had never hurt him, but then they were uncontrollable. He mentioned that he had met Remy a couple of times and even helped him with his powers.
Charles was patient and kind, everything your dad had ever boasted about. He offered you a room, a hot meal, and a good night’s sleep. You gathered your things from the car, changed into different sleepwear, and got into bed after a shower. As soon as your head hit the pillow, your tears flowed. All of your energy and attention had been diverted to get here, to get to a safe place. Now that you were here, and alone without Remy, it hurt you like never before. He’d probably never want to see you, not after what you’d done to him, and with that thought, you sobbed loudly into your pillow, trying to drown out the choking pain in your chest.
---------------------
For two days you worked with Charles and the other teachers after their teaching hours. Unbeknownst to you, while you were training with Jean Grey, Charles was at cerebro, looking for new recruits, but your name was being shouted, and he was drawn to the sound. He traced the source of the sound to Remy - he was searching for you. Charles’s heart broke for the two of you. You had confided that you didn’t want to be near Remy again, too scared and worried that you’d hurt him or worse. But here, Charles was seeing the man that loved you, willing to search the ends of the earth to find you.
He was torn. He could very well reach out to Gambit and tell him. To inform him of where you were, how upset you were. But you had asked him to not tell Remy, should he ask about you.
Hank was there, about to ask if Charles had found anything, when he saw the look on his dear friend’s face.
“Charles? What is it?”
“It’s Remy Lebeau. He’s looking for Y/N,” he informed, still in thought.
Hank nodded, listening. “Are you going to tell her?”
“I don’t see how I could. She’s so upset over hurting him, adding that burden to her would just impede her progress with her powers and cause unnecessary pain.”
“What about Gambit? Will you tell him where she is?” he wondered.
“What good would that do? He would show up and know that I betrayed her trust. No. She specifically asked me to not tell him. I’ll respect her wishes,” he stated as the two of them worked their way down the brightly lit corridor.
-----------------
Only two more days later, you were wrapping up your training that was going well with Storm. She was patient and kind, just like Charles. You could see why the kids loved her. Your powers were slowly starting to listen to you and now you weren’t as afraid of them, but being with Remy...seeing him again, that still wasn’t in the cards.
Cards….You sighed at the thought of your beloved’s favorite throwing object.
Grabbing your notebook, you wished Storm a good evening, and left her classroom. Headed to the kitchen to grab a snack, you passed by the huge front door, where Hank was talking to someone.
“I told you, she’s not here,” Hank insisted.
“Now, Beast, don’t lie to me,” Remy’s distinct voice and accent warned, piercing right through you. You froze in your spot. “If I know her, and I like to think I do, she’s woulda come here, now be a gentleman and point me in the right direction.”
“Remy--” Hank started but he had moved an inch to the left, exposing your form.
“Y/N?” he breathed, looking at you as if he were looking at a ghost.
You couldn’t think of anything to say, hell, you could hardly register to move.
He pushed past Hank gently to run to you, his hands finding your face as he touched all over you, as if making sure you were real, and okay.
“Remy?” you questioned, looking up at the dashing Cajun.
“Yeah, mon cher, it’s me. What on earth happened to you? You had that awful nightmare and I---I guess I musta passed out. I wake up and I’m in the hospital and you--you’re just...gone,” he said in a flurry, his hands gently gripping your upper arms. “Lawd, I missed you,” he breathed as he gripped you in a tight hug suddenly. “Why didn’t you tell me where you were goin’?”
“Remy...I...I left. I hurt you,” you managed to get out.
“Darlin’ that wasn’t your fault,” he promised, sincerity so strong in his voice it nearly killed you.
“It was my fault though. I’m the one who nearly caused you to die. It was my power that sucked the oxygen out of you…”
He soothed your hair before kissing your forehead, lingering there a moment. “Mon cherie, when are you gonna learn that ain’t nothin’ gonna keep me away from you? Not your crazy powers or your worry for me or nothin’. You got that?”
“But Remy…” you started, not sure how to continue. How to tell him that you loved him too much to be with him, to put him back in that danger.
“You’re scareda hurtin’ me, that it?” he inquired, his eyes intense on yours, so much love in them.
All you could do was meekly nod.
“Well you’re at the best place to keep you from doin’ that. The Professor and his team, they’re a wonderful group of people, they’ll help you through it, and if you’ll let me, I’ll help ya too. I love you, and I want to help you. I would rather get hurt by you with your powers than be away from you. So if that means we gotta stay at this mansion for the rest of our lives to make sure you’re comfortable then I’m okay with that.”
You pursed your lips. He shouldn’t have to give up his life for you, to be endangered by you.
“Are you--are you sure?” you asked softly. You wanted him, more than anything in the world, but you wouldn’t be so selfish as to make him stay with you.
“As sure as there will be beads at Mardi Gras,” he stated confidently with a sideways grin. “I love you, Y/N. Let me help you. Let me be with you. I promise we’ll get through this together, alright?”
You nodded, a tear escaping, signifying your worry and heartbreak.
He hugged you quickly, soothing your hair, before kissing your head. “Oh, mon amour,” he breathed in that accent you loved so dearly. “Don’t you ever leave me again. I love you too damned much.”
“I love you, too,” you admitted, hugging him tightly back, thanking your lucky stars that you had such a wonderful, perfect man to share your life with.
AngelEdit
Warren Worthington was born in Centerport, New York, to Kathryn Worthington and Warren Worthington Jr. He attends Phillips Exeter Academy in his adolescence when his feathered wings begin to grow from his shoulder blades. At first, Warren feels he is a freak and aberration, but he soon learns that he can use his wings to fly and help people. When there is a fire in his dormitory, he borrows some props from the school's drama department, dresses up as a heavenly angel, and rescues his friends. He soon learns that he is in fact a mutant. He dons a mask and costume, calls himself the Avenging Angel, and becomes a solo adventurer, before being recruited by Professor Charles Xavier for the X-Men.[8]
Warren's status as a wealthy playboy, as well as being an outspoken individual who chafes at the notion of being told what to do, is the subject of much tension within the X-Men. In particular, Warren is in love with Jean Grey, who is in love with Scott Summers, although he ultimately concedes Jean to Scott.[9] Angel still harbors an unrequited love for Jean even as he finds himself a girlfriend of his own, Candy Southern.[10]
While pursuing Sauron in the Savage Land, Angel is attacked by pteranodons and falls to his death. He would have remained dead if not for the "Creator", who is Magneto without his costume. Magneto provides the necessary medical treatment needed to revive Angel, and provides him with a new blue-and-white costume.[11] Unknown to Angel, the costume also has a device installed that lets Magneto gain control over Angel, which he does months later when he makes an attack on the X-Men.[12]
Around this time, Angel publicly reveals himself as a mutant after discovering that not only has his uncle, Burt Worthington (who goes by the name of the Dazzler — though he is in no way related to Alison Blaire, a later mutant heroine and brief love interest for Warren in her own comic series who also uses the name), murdered Warren's father, Warren Worthington, Jr.,[13] but also poisoned his mother in order to ensure his inheritance of the Worthington fortune.[14]
When the original X-Men are captured by the mutant island Krakoa, Professor X creates a new team of X-Men to rescue them.[15] When this new team decides to stay on as X-Men, Angel and the rest of the original team, with the exception of Cyclops, leave.[16] He and Iceman go to Los Angeles, where they found the Champions with Hercules, the Black Widow, and the original Ghost Rider.[17] Following the apparent death of Jean Grey and Cyclops' subsequent exile from the team, Warren rejoins the X-Men.[18] During this time, Angel unsuccessfully pursues pop star Alison Blaire, also known as Dazzler.[volume & issue needed] He grows increasingly disturbed by the behavior and actions of Wolverine,[19] and quits the team in protest.[20]
He is kidnapped by the Morlock leader Callisto, who intends to force Angel to be her lover. Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Sprite arrive in time to stop Callisto from cutting off Angel's wings (believing that without them, Angel will be unable to flee from her). Storm fights and defeats Callisto for the right to be the leader of the Morlocks, effectively freeing Angel in the process.[21]
Shortly thereafter, Angel joins the Defenders, along with Beast, Iceman and girlfriend Candy Southern.[22] Using Angel's Colorado house as their base, the group has several adventures before most of the group are killed freeing teammate Moondragon from demonic possession.[23]
Angel considers retirement following the collapse of the Defenders, but the discovery of Jean Grey alive changes his mind. Jean Grey is furious at the increase in anti-mutant hysteria in the two years she has been missing, and opposes the X-Men's decision to align themselves with the villain Magneto. To appease Jean's desire for action, Warren organizes X-Factor.[24] He recruits his old prep school friend Cameron Hodge to run the team, unaware that Cameron hates mutants, particularly Warren.[volume & issue needed] Since Cyclops is married to Madelyne Pryor at the time and reacts coldly to Jean's return, Angel takes advantage of Jean's need for emotional support and expresses his love for her.[volume & issue needed] This destroys Warren's relationship with Candy Southern, after Candy finds Warren consoling Jean.[25]
ArchangelEdit
X-Factor's formation begins a period of upheaval in Warren's life. Cameron Hodge abuses Warren's trust and portrays X-Factor as "mutant hunters" for hire, further fueling anti-mutant sentiment.[volume & issue needed] An altercation with the Brotherhood of Mutants allows Mystique to discover the relationship between the "mutant hunters" and the former X-Men; she exposes Warren as the financial backer for X-Factor, causing a public relations nightmare.[volume & issueneeded] Warren's wings are mutilated during the Mutant Massacre by the Marauder, Harpoon.[26] When the wings develop gangrene, Cameron Hodge violates Angel's wishes and has the crippled wings amputated.[27] Despondent over the loss, Warren escapes the hospital and commandeers his private jet. It explodes in the air as the rest of X-Factor watch helplessly from below.[28] It is ultimately revealed that Hodge sabotaged Warren's plane in order to finish off his nemesis, in an apparent suicide.[volume & issue needed]
Seconds before the explosion, Warren is spirited away by the ancient mutant Apocalypse. Apocalypse offers to restore Angel's wings if Angel will serve him as one of his Four Horsemen.[29] Apocalypse subjects Angel to extensive genetic alterations, giving him blue skin and organic metal wings which can cut through almost anything. The wings can fire the metal feathers as projectiles. Apocalypse gives Worthington the title of Death. He makes Worthington the leader of his Horsemen after Worthington beats the others in a fight, and gives him a drug that remove his reservations to follow Apocalypse's dark plans.[30] Death is unveiled to X-Factor during their second encounter with the Horsemen,[31] and Warren sadistically exploits the weaknesses of his friends to defeat them in combat.[32] During a later attack on Manhattan, Iceman fakes his own death at Warren's hands, hoping that the shock of killing a friend will enable him to break free of the influence of Apocalypse's drug. Although freed, Warren refuses to rejoin X-Factor, feeling that he has changed too much psychologically to be a hero.[33]
He seeks out Candy Southern, but finds that she is missing.[volume & issue needed] Warren learns that Candy has been lobotomized to protect Cameron Hodge's secrets, including the establishment of the anti-mutant militia "The Right" using funds embezzled from Worthington.[volume & issue needed] In the confrontation that follows, Hodge murders Candy in front of Warren and Warren decapitates Hodge.[34] Changing his codename from "Death" to "Dark Angel", he later rejoins X-Factor and takes the codename "Archangel" during the events of Inferno.[35]
Warren later meets and becomes romantically involved with Charlotte Jones, a New York City Police officer and single mother.[volume & issue needed] It is with Charlotte's help that X-Factor frees Warren from the Ravens, a cult of near-immortal psychic vampires.[36] It is during this battle that Warren's survival is made public knowledge, allowing him to regain control over his family's remaining business holdings and his personal fortune.[volume & issue needed] X-Factor rejoins the X-Men following the defeat of the Shadow King on Muir Island.[volume & issue needed]
Angel againEdit
After rejoining the X-Men, Archangel's brooding behavior lessens, after Jean reveals to Warren that his wings (which Warren believes have a mind of their own) have actually been operating off Warren's own unconscious desires for violence.[37] This, combined with Warren's accidental decapitation of Mutant Liberation Front member Kamikaze,[38] leads Warren to try to reject the dark cloud that has hung over his head ever since gaining his new wings. His relationship with Charlotte Jones fades as Warren begins dating fellow X-Men member Psylocke.[39] In an attempt to put his dark days behind him, Warren retires his "Death" uniform in favor of the blue/white costume Magneto made for him.[volume & issue needed]
After Psylocke is eviscerated by X-Men prisoner Sabretooth during an escape attempt, Warren and the X-Men track him down and capture him, but not before he is able to badly damage Warren's metal wings.[40] Over time, the damage to his wings spreads. Eventually, the metal wings shatter completely, revealing that his feathered wings have been growing back within them and have broken them apart from the inside.[41] This follows a visit from Ozymandias, who tells him that he is indeed one of Apocalypse's chosen ones.[volume & issue needed] Reclaiming his original Angel powers, Warren still retains his blue skin color.[volume & issue needed]
Angel is one of several X-Men who are present when Gambit's culpability in the events of the "Mutant Massacre" is made public by Magneto, which turns him against his teammate.[42] Shortly afterwards, with the X-Men broke and their mansion stripped bare by the US Government, Angel volunteers money to help keep the team going, though this requires his reclaiming full control over his family company to do so.[volume & issue needed] Tracking some of his company's finances at this time, Warren discovers the former villains the Thunderbolts retrieving a jet that was used by the Champions, but although initially suspicious of the Thunderbolts' motives, after joining them in a confrontation with Graviton, Warren accepts their genuine desire to reform, leaving them with the jet as he wishes them luck.[43] Angel returns to the X-Men following the events of The Twelve, in which his wings (temporarily) further mutate into wings made of light and he gains talon-like hands and healing powers, which Warren uses to restore the mobility of crippled Horseman of Apocalypse War.[volume & issue needed] Returning to the X-Men, Warren finds his relationship with Psylocke gone, as she has begun dating new X-Men recruit Thunderbird III.[volume & issue needed]
When Rogue leaves the X-Men to join Storm's splinter group (X-Treme X-Men), Angel is promoted to head of the X-Men's field team.[volume & issue needed] Angel's squad fights the anti-mutant group Church of Humanity[volume & issue needed] and Mystique and her newest incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants,[volume & issue needed] and tangles with the Vanisher, who has gone into business with several medical companies to create a designer drug that could give humans mutant-like powers.[volume & issue needed] Angel also becomes entangled in a love triangle with rookie X-Men member Paige Guthrie and the mutant prostitute Stacy X.[volume & issue needed] Furthermore, during a battle with Black Tom Cassidy, Angel's regression to his pre-"Death" state is complete when he reverts to his normal Caucasian skin color when Cassidy (now turned into a plant-type vampire) attempts to drain Angel's life force from him.[44] His healing powers from The Twelve also manifest themselves again, in the form of the revelation that Angel's blood has miracle healing properties.[volume & issue needed][45]
DecimationEdit
Following the death of Jean Grey, Warren and Paige take an extended leave of absence from the team.[volume & issue needed] Warren begins doing overseas charity work at this point, in the form of a charity called "Mutants Sans Frontières" in Zanzibar (a reference to Doctors Without Borders), where he then proceeds to help stop a coup with the aid of Professor X's newest charges from nearby Genosha.[46] In Excalibur, Warren meets up again with Callisto. As Paige reminds Warren of his history with Callisto, Viper attacks, but Warren and Callisto defeat Viper together.[47]
In Generation M, Angel fakes having lost his wings in order to capture the Ghoul, a deranged serial killer who uses his retained mutant powers to murder ex-mutants.[48]
Though not an active member of any team, Warren reunites with the other surviving original X-Men — Cyclops, Iceman, and Beast — in a mission to stop Bishop from recapturing the fugitive mutants known as the 198,[volume & issue needed] though Bishop later joins them in their rescue attempt.[49]
World War HulkEdit
Angel joins with fellow former Champions member Hercules, Namora, and Amadeus Cho in order to calm down the rampaging Hulk.[50] Afterward, Angel discovers that Amadeus Cho has hacked into Warren's bank accounts and stolen several million dollars from him, to help him further aid the Hulk.[volume & issue needed]
Messiah ComplexEdit
Angel is part of the team that investigates the new mutant birth in Alaska.[51] He is later part of the team who is looking for former Acolytes.[52] He is next seen part of the same team, but attacking the Marauders.[53] Warren goes against Mister Sinister, but is easily defeated once Sinister recovers from Emma Frost's mental attack.[54] Angel is knocked out, but recovers and is present with the X-teams for the final battle over the fate of the baby.[55]
Divided We StandEdit
Angel is later seen flying over San Francisco, going to meet with Hepzibah, Warpath, and Iceman, when he stumbles across an area that looks as if the 1960s never ended. He contacts Scott and Emma, asking them for assistance before suffering the mind-altering effects of the zone, which are revealed to be caused by Martinique Jason.[56] Angel and the three other ensnared X-Men are sent by Martinique to confront Scott and Emma.[57] Emma manages to free them from the illusion and, during the fall-out battle, Angel rescues Mayor Sadie Sinclair. Thankful for the assistance and for the idea of having real superheroes in their city, Mayor Sinclair then talks to Cyclops and Angel about helping them resettle the X-Men in San Francisco.[58]
Archangel returnsEdit
In X-Force (vol. 3) #4, Warren is brutally attacked by a mind-controlled Wolfsbane. During the attack, Wolfsbane savagely rips Warren's feather wings from his back and runs away, taking the wings with her.[59] It is revealed by Elixir that Warren's wings, despite appearing fully organic, are actually still techno-organic constructs that he is unable to regenerate[volume & issue needed]. Wolfsbane later delivers them to the Purifiers, who are seeking the Apocalypse Strain, the techno-organics which comprise Warren's wings. The Purifiers use the Apocalypse Strain to modify an army of Purifier agents, giving them the same metallic wings that Archangel once had.[volume & issue needed] Meanwhile, although Elixir is able to heal all of Warren's injuries, he cannot regrow his wings due to interference from the Apocalypse Strain. Later in the story, Warren is gripped by a series of excruciating seizures that not only mysteriously regenerate his techno-organic wings, but also transform him back into Apocalypse's version of Death/Archangel, complete with blue skin and a techno-organic version of his uniform.[60]
X-Force attacks Archangel, who eventually asks for relief from the pain of losing his wings and transforming into Archangel.[61] Archangel escapes, to take revenge on the Purifiers, and at their headquarters he slaughters most of them in a blood-maddened rage. Once the battle is over, he reverts to his normal Caucasian, feather-winged appearance. He comments to Wolverine that he can still feel the metal wings inside him, and that they want to come out again. According to Elixir, Warren's transformation is permanent, implying that he is fully capable of transforming back into Archangel again at any time.[62]
In an attempt to understand what was done to both Wolfsbane and Angel, the pair of them are placed in a room together, where Rahne is forced to gaze at Warren. The mere sight of him causes her to become murderous once again, and she attempts to rip the wings from Warren's body once more. The sight of a psychotic Wolfsbane, as well as the fear of having his wings torn from his body again, causes a defensive reaction in Warren, reverting him back into his violent Archangel persona.[volume & issue needed]
From then on, Angel takes dual membership with both the X-Men and X-Force, though Cyclops forbids Angel from telling the rest of the team about the return of his Archangel powers.[volume & issue needed] While recruiting a scientist for Beast's "Science Squad", the X-Club, Angel is forced to transform into Archangel in order to destroy a giant rampaging monster. Beast reacts in anger that Angel has not told him that his "Death" powers have returned, creating tension between the two friends. Angel knows telling Beast would expose the latest incarnation of X-Force and effectively end Cyclops' latest tenure as leader if the truth about his personal black ops squad became public knowledge.[volume & issue needed]
During the X-Club's trip to 1906 in order to discover the origins of the modern mutant race, Angel transforms into Archangel a number of times to help further their mission.[volume & issue needed]
During the Fear Itself storyline, Wolverine and Archangel interrogate Purifiers member Benedict Ryan on where Jonathan Standish is hiding out.[63]
Dark Angel SagaEdit
In the "Dark Angel Saga", the "Archangel" persona of Warren, which was secretly created when he was first transformed by Apocalypse into his Horseman of Death, has finally taken over his mind, and he plans to be the heir to Apocalypse, bringing Ozymandias, Dark Beast, the Final Horsemen, Autumn Rolfson, and her son Genocide as his army to destroy humanity.[64] At the conclusion of the story arc Betsy stabs Archangel in the chest with the Celestial Life Seed, seemingly killing him. In the aftermath of the explosion of Apocalypse's citadel, Warren is seen by the members of X-Force walking in the snow. Psylocke, shocked that he is alive and apparently free of Apocalypse, runs up and embraces him. This Warren then reveals he had no idea who Psylocke is and appears to have amnesia. Warren has his normal white skin again but seems to have retained his metallic wings.[65]
Death and new personalityEdit
Following the Dark Angel Saga, it is revealed that Warren had indeed died and his soul departed for the afterlife, with his Celestial-mutated body now hosting an all-new personality with its own soul. He lost leadership of Worthington Industries and became a student in Wolverine's new school for mutants.[2] Although the new entity, who has chosen to retain the same name of Warren Worthington III and the code name of "Angel" is making efforts to be integrated, it is clear that he has no memory at all of the original Warren Worthington's friends and acquaintances, as his discussions with Iceman demonstrate and how he turned away former lover Psylocke.[2]
When Wolverine's legs were damaged Warren tried to fix them with a "miracle". When he failed he wanted to try it again but Wolverine wouldn't allow him, so he and a few other students went to the casino on Planet Sin. There they took the device that damaged their headmaster's legs so it could be used to heal him. While doing so he forged a friendship with Evan, a clone of Apocalypse.[volume & issue needed]
Warren tried to prove that he truly was a real angel by flying to heaven but he failed and accepted the fact that he was mutant. While falling he was saved by Evan and revealed that he could see the essence of people when he looked at them. Evan asked him what he saw when he looked at him and despite seeing only the image of Apocalypse, Warren told him that he could see nothing but goodness in him.[66]
Warren left the school with Bobby and Rachel to help his fellow mutants in the battle against the Avengers.[volume & issue needed] After the battle, he returned to join the stand against Cyclops, and has since regained all of his memories.[volume & issue needed]
Warren's childrenEdit
In an apocalyptic possible future, an aging Frank Castle warns the present-day Deadpool of the "son of Archangel".[67] During Uncanny Avengers (2013), it is revealed that while preparing to ascend as Apocalypse during the "Dark Angel Saga", Warren fathered two children with Pestilence of the Final Horsemen, who appear as the time-traveling "Apocalypse Twins".[68]
All-New, All-Different MarvelEdit
As part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel event, Angel has mysteriously reverted somehow to his pre-LifeSeed blue-skinned Archangel form, and appears as a member of Magneto's new Uncanny X-Men in order to protect mutantkind at all costs. His mind had also changed, having become nothing more than a silent and mindless predator controlled by Psylocke. Under her psychic leash, Archangel became a heavy hitter in Magneto's X-Men.[69]
Apocalypse WarsEdit
Psylocke and Magneto travel to Green Ridge, Colorado to investigate reports of an up-and-coming preacher who looks identical to the original Angel. They discover that he is indeed the Angel who was created by the Celestial LifeSeed and he is attracting a cult of religious fanatics around him.[70] It is revealed that during the 8-month timeskip after the events of Secret Wars, Angel allied himself with Apocalypse's son, Genocide and the Clan Akkaba in exchange for their help in controlling his Horseman of Death split-personality, which has revived as it is permanently linked to his own metal wings. Clan Akkaba are constantly harvesting Angel's rapidly-regenerating metal wings (in order to prevent the Death persona from fully possessing Angel) and grafting them into his clones, creating a mindless clone army of blue-skinned Archangels. The silent Archangel who is a member of Magneto's team of X-Men was merely the first such clone who retained trace memories of the original Angel and thus managed to escape to join Magneto's X-Men. Magneto and Psylocke are captured, but Psylocke easily escapes. She gets into a fight with Fantomex, who was sent by Magneto as back-up with Mystique, who herself freed Magneto.[71] Psylocke in a panic calls for the Archangel who is their teammate, who then telepathically controls the rest of the clone army into destroying the town, but the clones are all killed.[72] In a flashback, it is revealed that Magneto accidentally found Angel's unconscious and injured body in a barn during the 8-month timeskip and helped him recover. Magneto at the time gave up on being a hero, as the rest of the X-Men had either disbanded or fled to Limbo, but then was inspired by Angel to restart his own version of the Uncanny X-Men.[73] It is implied that Angel disappeared after that encounter, only to "reappear" as the silent Archangel. In the present, a chastised and repentant Angel explains to Magneto and Psylocke that he and the silent Archangel are ultimately two half-parts of the same one being, so they physically combine into a new blue-skinned persona. This new Archangel being is unsure of who or what he now was, but was determined to find out. He swore off all violence and returned with Magneto's X-Men to their base in the Savage Land.[74]
Time-displaced Warren Worthington IIIEdit
All-New X-MenEdit
Main article: All-New X-Men
When Beast decides to travel back in time to recruit the original X-Men to stop Scott committing mutant genocide,[75] Angel accompanies his teammates into the future, but initially prefers to return to the past rather than remain in such a twisted present. Even after his teammates vote to remain until they have saved the future, Angel expresses curiosity about what has happened to his own future self, as no reference has been made to his present condition.[76] The next day, the rebirthed Angel finds the younger Angel who asks him why he has metallic wings; the older Angel ignores the question and invites his younger self to go flying.[77] While flying above the skies of New York, the two Angels become caught up in H.Y.D.R.A.'s attack on Avengers Tower. Together, the two heroes are able to defeat the terrorists and capture Madame Hydra.[78]
Joining Cyclops and gaining cosmic wingsEdit
Frustrated after seeing what will happen to himself in the future, the younger Angel defects from the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning and joins the older Cyclops' new team of outlaw X-Men.[79] After the 2013 "Battle of the Atom" storyline, the rest of the displaced X-Men also join Cyclops' team, except for young Cyclops, who joins his father Corsair and the Starjammers.[80] Warren then starts a romantic relationship with X-23.[volume & issue needed] Later, the All-New X-Men accidentally travel to the Ultimate Universe, where Angel and X-23 encounter that universe's version of Wolverine's son, Jimmy Hudson and the X-Men.[81] During the events of the 2015 storyline "The Black Vortex", young Warren is imbued with cosmic powers and gains magic wings of light.[82] When asked by X-23 why he risked his life to gain new powers, he said he hoped that changing himself will alter his future and prevent him from being transformed into Archangel.[83]
RessurXionEdit
After the X-Men go to war against the Inhumans over the fate of the Terrigen, Angel joins the rest of the time-displaced X-Men in hopes of finally returning them to their own timeline. However they discover that they aren't from Earth 616's timeline and with no way of figuring out which timeline they're from, they become stranded on Earth 616.[84] With this knowledge in mind, Angel and the rest of the time-displaced X-Men leave the main team of X-Men to find their place in the world.[85] Angel joins the rest of the time-displaced X-Men alongside Magneto.[86]
After a series of adventures - which included the discovery that they actually were from the true past and the X-Men they had witnessed were actually the disguised Brotherhood of Mutants attempting to change history -[87] the X-Men are forced to return to the past when they are attacked by Ahab, a mutant-hunter from the future, and a younger version of Cable who feels that his future self has lost his way. Part of young-Cable's efforts include surgically removing Warren's new cosmic wings and replacing them with the wings Mimic copied from Warren in the past.[88] The team eventually return to the past, with Jean planting a psychic block on their memories so that they will forget about their experiences in the future until they catch up with the moment they departed.[89]
As the poor join protests, Venezuela may be hitting a turning point
By Mariana Zuñiga and Nick Miroff, Washington Post, April 29, 2017
CARACAS, Venezuela--In the cramped hillside slums where they once adored Hugo Chávez, hungry families now jeer and bang pots at the man struggling in his shadow, President Nicolás Maduro.
Chávez, a master showman who promised his country a socialist “revolution,” loved to wade through crowds of poor Venezuelans, blowing kisses and dispensing hugs. But when his successor has ventured out in public in recent months, he’s been pelted with eggs and chased by angry mobs.
“Maduro is so different,” said Irene Castillo, 26, who lives in El Guarataro, a tough neighborhood not far from the presidential palace. She voted for Maduro in 2013 when Chávez died after 14 years in power. But no one on Castillo’s block supports the government anymore, she said. “Now, those who remain ‘chavistas’ are just the radicals.”
As the country’s bloody, volatile, month-old protest movement hardens into a prolonged standoff between demonstrators and the government, the loyalties of poorer Venezuelans like Castillo have become a swing factor in determining whether the president will survive.
The thousands of demonstrators pouring into the streets in recent weeks are mostly middle class, outraged by Venezuela’s economic collapse and the government’s increasingly authoritarian rule. But Venezuelans from longtime chavista strongholds are starting to join them, at considerable risk. Residents of Castillo’s neighborhood protested openly against Maduro for the first time last week.
Pro-government block captains in neighborhoods like El Guarataro have responded by threatening to deny food rations to those who march with the opposition or fail to join pro-Maduro rallies. Militia groups armed by the government and known as “colectivos” are deployed to intimidate would-be defectors and are suspected in the deaths of several protesters.
As the confrontation escalates, many other destitute Venezuelans remain on the sidelines, disillusioned with Maduro but unpersuaded by his opponents, or too busy looking for food to join a march.
Aside from a military revolt, there is perhaps nothing Maduro fears more than a rebellion spreading through the neighborhoods that long backed Chávez. There are signs it’s already happening.
On several occasions this month, a pattern has emerged in which mostly middle-class Venezuelans and student activists swarm the capital’s main highway during the day, while poorer residents stage smaller protests in their neighborhoods at night, some of which have degenerated into chaos and looting.
In El Guarataro, where services such as electricity and water are frequently shut off, residents built barricades of flaming debris in the streets last week , clanging pots and pans at their windows to amplify their frustration. Riot police and national guard troops arrived, touching off clashes in a neighborhood that has long been a solid-red bastion of support for the government.
“The base of the chavista movement has eroded, and the situation is growing more explosive,” said Margarita López Maya, a political analyst in Caracas. “There’s no bread, but the government continues to insist it has the majority of Venezuelans on its side, so it looks increasingly dissociated from the reality of people’s lives.”
The leaders of the Democratic Unity party, the big-tent coalition of Maduro opponents, are demanding that the government release political prisoners and move up presidential elections due to take place in late 2018. They also want full power restored to the legislative branch, which Maduro and pro-government judges have stymied since the opposition won majority control in 2015.
Maduro depicts his opponents as terrorists who are trying to sow chaos to prepare the ground for a foreign invasion.
With the world’s largest oil reserves, Venezuela used to be one of Latin America’s most prosperous nations. Now it’s among the most miserable, tormented by rampant crime, corruption and staggering government dysfunction. A scarcity of food and basic medicine has left more and more Venezuelans suffering from empty stomachs or languishing in squalid hospitals.
The shortages have spread widely but fallen hardest on the poor.
A survey by three of the country’s leading universities found that three-fourths of Venezuelans lost weight last year, by an average of 19 pounds.
Aware that mass hunger will hasten Maduro’s political demise, the government last year began assigning food sacks to Venezuelans in poorer areas, putting local party activists in charge of distribution. The program is known by its acronym, CLAP, and in neighborhoods like El Guarataro, residents know they could go without meals if they join protests or decline to join government-organized marches.
“They are afraid of losing the CLAP bag,” said Mirlenis Palacios, 45, an activist for the Primero Justicia party of opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who was recently banned from running for office for 15 years.
In interviews, several residents of poorer Caracas neighborhoods said they have been warned not to participate in any anti-government protests. “They blackmailed us with the bag,” said one man in El Guarataro, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.
Pro-government “colectivo” militants on motorcycles are a more fearsome threat. Phil Gunson, a Venezuela-based analyst for the International Crisis Group, said they function like a paramilitary police force, suppressing potential protests while allowing the government to deny responsibility for their violence.
“They are a very effective form of intimidation,” Gunson said. “They openly display weapons on the street, and everyone knows who they are. So if you’re an opposition activist, it’s very risky to dissent in the barrios.”
The poorer neighborhoods are still widely referred to as “chavista” neighborhoods, but the label no longer applies, said Luis Vicente León, director of the Datanalisis polling firm, whose recent survey found that 88 percent of Venezuelans are unhappy with the government.
“The Venezuelans living in those neighborhoods want change, too,” León said. “But they don’t have time to go to marches, and they have no leadership.” Even as they sour on Maduro, he added, they feel the middle-class opposition movement is “not their natural ally.”
Democratic Unity activists only recently have begun making inroads in Caracas’s poorest districts, he said, because it remains dangerous for them to attempt ordinary grass-roots political work like knocking on doors or staging rallies.
But León said there are clearly more poor Venezuelans at opposition protests now than there were in 2014, when the government last faced a major rebellion, months of clashes in which more than 40 people were killed.
The political violence this month has left 29 dead, including Venezuelans apparently slain during looting.
Maduro still has Venezuela’s military, its oil revenue and its state-run media, even as the poor have started to tune out the propaganda. But the biggest obstacle the opposition faces in appealing to the poor may be the perception that the street protests won’t make a difference.
“We’re almost reaching a month of protests, and it’s done nothing,” said Xavier Hernández, 23, a motorcycle-taxi driver who lives in El Guarataro. “I’m not going to risk my life for it.”
As Tiradentes was not a member of the local aristocracy, he was systematically overlooked for promotion and never rose above the rank of <i>alferes</i> (2nd lieutenant).</p> <h2><span class="mw-headline" id="Political_ideas">Political ideas</span></h2> <p>Living in a state rich in gold, Tiradentes used the knowledge he acquired about minerals to enter the public service (he achieved the ranks of <i>alferes</i>, low in the hierarchy of the epoch), and he was sent to missions in cities along the road between Vila Rica (the capital of Minas Gerais) and <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Rio+de+Janeiro">Rio de Janeiro</a>; this road was the <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Open+Veins+of+Latin+America">"open vein"</a> used to export most of the gold to <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Portugal">Portugal</a>.</p> <p>Tiradentes soon noticed the exploitation to which Brazilians were subjected; he saw how much gold, and other valuable resources were being pillaged for export to Portugal.</p> <p>His trips to Rio put him in contact with people who had lived in Europe and brought from there the libertarian ideas (the American colonies had become independent in 1776, and <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/French+Revolution">French Revolution</a> would be in 1789, the "cauldron" of freedom was "hard boiling"). In 1788, Tiradentes met José Alvares Maciel, son of the governor of Vila Rica, who had just returned from England; they could compare the <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Economic+history+of+Britain">British industrial progress</a> with the Brazilian colonial poverty. They created a group of freedom aspirers, led by clerics and other Brazilians with some social presence, like <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Cláudio+Manuel+da+Costa">Cláudio Manuel da Costa</a> (staff of government and important writer), <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Tomás+Antônio+Gonzaga">Tomás Antônio Gonzaga</a> (staff of government) and <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Alvarenga+Peixoto">Alvarenga Peixoto</a> (eminent businessman); the group propagated their ideas among Brazilians.</p> <p>At that time, Portugal was hungry for gold; however, the production of Brazilian mines was declining. The Brazilians were not meeting the yearly quota of gold that was requested by the crown, and there was pressure from Portugal to ensure all the due taxes were paid. The days of payment of taxes were called <i>derrama</i>.</p> <p>Influenced by the writings of <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Jean-Jacques+Rousseau">Rousseau</a>, and by the <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/American+Revolution">American Revolution</a>, Tiradentes joined with a number of like-minded citizens in the <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Inconfidência+Mineira">Inconfidência Mineira</a>. They wanted to found a <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Republic">republic</a> with its capital at <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/São+João+del+Rei">São João del Rei</a> and to create a university. The proposed flag for the new republic was <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/White">white</a> with a <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Green">green</a> <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Triangle">triangle</a> surrounded by the <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Latin">Latin</a> <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Motto">motto</a> "Libertas Quae Sera Tamen" ("Liberdade, Ainda que Tarde", <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Portuguese+language">Portuguese</a> for "Freedom, Even If It Be Late"). The flag later became the state flag of <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Minas+Gerais">Minas Gerais</a>, the only modification was the color of the triangle which was changed to <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Red">red</a>.</p> <h2><span class="mw-headline" id="Discovery.2C_trial_and_execution">Discovery, trial and execution</span></h2> <p>The plan of Tiradentes was, in a day of derrama (when the sentiment of revolt among Brazilians would be stronger), to take the streets of Vila Rica and proclaim the Brazilian Republic. The movement, however, was denounced to the governor, who canceled the derrama scheduled for February 1789 and ordered the imprisonment of the rebels. The person who denounced the movement was Joaquim Silverio dos Reis; he was a participant of the movement, and betrayed the group in exchange for waiving of his due taxes.</p> <div class="outerpic tright" readability="6.5"> <div class="pic" readability="8"><a href="javascript:eml2('d/d2/','Tiradentes_Esquartejado_(Pedro_Américo,_1893).jpg')"><img alt="" src="https://img2.tfd.com/wiki/old/thumbs/d/d2/Tiradentes_Esquartejado_(Pedro_Américo%2C_1893).jpg" width="150" height="243" class="thumbimage"/></a> <p> Tiradentes quartered. Not knowing who had denounced the group, he went to meet Joaquim Silverio dos Reis in Rio; Tiradentes was arrested on May 10, 1789.</p> <p>The trial lasted almost three years. Tiradentes assumed the entire responsibility for the movement. Ten members of the group were sentenced to death; all of them – except Tiradentes – had their sentences, by mercy of the Queen, commuted from death to degradation.</p> <p>On April 21, 1792 (today the date of a national holiday in Brazil), Tiradentes was <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Hanging">hanged</a> in Rio de Janeiro, in the plaza today named <i>Praça Tiradentes</i>. His body was <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Hanged%2C+drawn+and+quartered">quartered</a> into several pieces. With his blood, a document was written declaring his memory infamous. His head was publicly displayed in Vila Rica and pieces of his body were exhibited in the cities between Vila Rica and Rio to terrorize the populace and those who had sympathized with Tiradentes' ideas of independence.</p> <h2><span class="mw-headline" id="National_hero">National hero</span></h2> <p>He began to be considered a national hero by the republicans in the late 19th century, and after the republic was proclaimed in Brazil in 1889 the anniversary of his death (April 21) became a <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Public+holidays+in+Brazil">national holiday</a>.</p> <p>As of now there is a city in the state of <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Minas+Gerais">Minas Gerais</a> bearing his name, city squares in <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Belo+Horizonte">Belo Horizonte</a>, <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Curitiba">Curitiba</a>, <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/São+Paulo">São Paulo</a>, and <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Rio+de+Janeiro">Rio de Janeiro</a>, as well as a major avenue in the <a href="https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Dominican+Republic">Dominican Republic</a>.</p> <h2><span class="mw-headline" id="Further_reading">Further reading</span></h2> <ul><li>Cheney, Glenn Alan, <i>Journey on the Estrada Real: Encounters in the Mountains of Brazil,</i> (Chicago: Academy Chicago, 2004) ISBN 0-89733-530-9</li> <li>Maxwell, Kenneth R, <i>Conflicts and Conspiracies: Brazil & Portugal 1750-1808</i> (Cambridge University Press, 1973)</li> </ul><h2><span class="mw-headline" id="External_links">External links</span></h2> <noscript/><br/><br/>Source: https://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Tiradentes<br/><img src="http://business.westernunion.com/media/2eeafbfb-2df9-4615-9f9c-3ad67d5b1e4a/HQ_Sgg/Shared/Resources/webinars/header-fxstrategistforeducation-V01.jpg"/><br/>
child 44
In 1933, a child (Xavier Atkins) orphaned during the Ukrainian Holodomor runs away from his orphanage and is taken in by a Red Army unit and adopted by its kindly commander (Mark Lewis Jones), who gives him the name Leo Demidov. In 1945, now a sergeant with the unit, Leo (Tom Hardy) becomes an icon across the Soviet Union when he is photographed planting the Soviet flag atop the Reichstag during the Battle of Berlin. He becomes a Hero of the Soviet Union.
In 1953, Leo, now married to Raisa (Noomi Rapace) and living in Moscow, is a captain in the Ministry of State Security (MGB), commanding a unit tasked with tracking down and arresting dissidents. They arrest a veterinarian, Anatoly Brodsky (Jason Clarke), and during the arrest, one of Leo's subordinates, the cowardly but ambitious Vasili Nikitin (Joel Kinnaman), shoots a farmer, Semyon Okun (Michael Nardone), and his wife in whose barn Brodsky has been hiding, orphaning their two young daughters. Angry, Leo strikes Vasili, who harbours growing resentment against Leo and the other officer in the unit, Alexei Andreyev (Fares Fares); all three were in Berlin together in 1945. Vasili is in charge of Brodsky's interrogation and execution, and one of the names he gives to their superior, Major Kuzmin (Vincent Cassel), is that of Raisa, a primary school teacher, several of whose colleagues have recently been arrested for dissident views. Kuzmin orders Leo to investigate his own wife.
Meanwhile, Alexei's young son, Jora (Zdenek Barinka), is found dead near a railway yard. Although the initial pathology report shows injuries consistent with torture, the surgically precise removal of organs, and drowning, the authorities declare that he was hit by a train, as Stalin has decreed that murder is a capitalist disease; there is no murder in a communist paradise. Alexei is forced to accept the official conclusions to save himself and the rest of his family.
Knowing what the consequences will be, Leo tells his superiors that his investigation has shown that Raisa is innocent of any crime and steadfastly refuses to denounce her. They are both later arrested by Vasili and Alexei and sent into internal exile in the provincial city of Volsk. Leo loses all rank and is forced to become a lowly militiaman under the command of General Nesterov (Gary Oldman), while Raisa is humiliated by becoming a cleaner in a school.
When the body of another child is found near the railway line in Volsk with similar injuries to Jora, Leo begins to realise that a serial killer is on the loose. After discovering that Alexander Pickup (Anssi Lindström), the man who found the body, is a homosexual, Nesterov forces him to denounce every local homosexual he knows; when Pickup, a railway ticket collector, commits suicide by walking in front of a train, the authorities say the case has been solved. However, Leo persuades Nesterov, who has young sons himself, to investigate further, and the two discover that the bodies of at least 43 more children have been found along the railway line from Rostov-on-Don to Moscow.
Meanwhile, Vasili, who now has Leo's old job, calls Raisa and attempts to persuade her to leave Leo and join him in Moscow. When she refuses, Vasili orders an MGB agent to abuse her. Raisa later admits to Leo that she only agreed to marry him because she was afraid to refuse the proposal given his status as an MGB officer.
Leo and Raisa travel in secret to Moscow to interview a woman who reported seeing Jora with a stranger in the railway yards. Although Alexei helps them, the interview is unproductive, as the woman is too frightened to talk. Due to a large MGB and militia presence at the station, the pair ask Raisa's former colleague and friend Ivan Sukov (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), who she knows has contacts among dissident groups, to help them get out of Moscow. However, in his apartment they discover clues that he is in fact an undercover MGB officer (the cause of the arrests in Raisa's school) and that he has called the authorities; Leo kills him and they escape just before Vasili arrives. Leo tells Raisa that she can leave him if she wishes, but she chooses to stay with him.
Leo and Raisa manage to return to Volsk, but there they are arrested by Vasili and his men for Sukov's murder. After being interrogated, Leo and Raisa are put on a train to a gulag. During the train ride, they are attacked by killers on Vasili's orders; after killing their assailants, Leo and Raisa jump off the train. They hitch a lift to Rostov, where the highest concentration of the serial killer's victims has been found; they correctly reason that the killer must work close to the rail yards there and travel the railway lines to Moscow in the course of his work. Vasili forces Alexei to tell him where they are likely to have gone, promising his family will be safe if he does so; Alexei tells him that Rostov is the likely destination before Vasili shoots him.
In the Rostov tractor factory, Leo identifies the killer by cross-referencing workers' travel assignments with the location and date of the murders. Leo and Raisa pursue the killer, Vladimir Malevich (Paddy Considine), into the woods and corner him. He surrenders to them and says he cannot control his urges to kill children, but is suddenly shot in the head by Vasili, who has followed Leo and Raisa. Vasili tries to execute them, but, after a vicious struggle, they kill him. Leo cleverly tells the MGB agents who arrive that Malevich killed Vasili and that he then shot Malevich.
Leo and Raisa are both reinstated in their old jobs and Kuzmin is removed for his failures. Leo is offered a promotion and a promising political position by his new superior, Major Grachev (Charles Dance), if he will agree that Malevich, a former army doctor who spent two years in a German POW camp, was 'turned' by the Germans and sent back to the Soviet Union to wreak havoc there. He refuses the promotion, but requests permission to set up and lead a homicide division in Moscow within the newly created KGB, with the help of General Nesterov. Grachev agrees and Leo in return agrees that Malevich was clearly a Nazi agent. At least he will now have the ability and power to track down and deal with murderers, even if he still cannot openly admit that they are simply murderers and not enemy agents.
Leo and Raisa track down Tamara and Elena Okun, go to the orphanage where they have been living, and adopt them.
How The Second Amendment Fails Us Regarding Tyranny
The argument that the second amendment is necessary to resist a tyrannical government is without practical merit, and I intend to demonstrate this by utility rather than arguing that the government is not out to get you or that it is morally wrong to kill people. As such, this essay takes a somewhat dispassionate and analytic attitude towards murder.
Indeed, there are several cases we can document in which the government and its citizens have been at violent odds both locally and at a federal level. The second amendment has not only failed to allow the citizens to overthrow the will of the government in these cases, it has in fact gotten them killed. I will not therefore argue that violence is not the answer because I would like to have everyone join in a peace circle and sing Welcome Christmas, but rather I will argue that it is not the answer because it doesn’t work. Then I will demonstrate the ways in which the second amendment enables and amplifies the curtailing of liberties for the American people.
The Waco Siege began with an initial FBI raid in which 4 agents and 6 Branch Davidians were killed. Following this was a 51 day siege that ended with the Branch Davidian building burning down, killing 76 people inside. Of the surviving Branch Davidians, of which there were eleven, all were arrested upon fleeing the flames.
The astonishing loss of life aside, the survivors still didn’t get their way. For all their guns and the four FBI agents they killed, they either went to prison anyway or else died a horrifying death by fire. The people stood up to the government for the sake of their (deviant) religious beliefs and they were prepared with violent means and they died or went to prison. The second amendment failed to allow these people seeking religious freedom to resist the government.
More recently, the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge also failed. In this case an armed militia seeking to assert land ownership rights over the government took possession by force of a national parks facility and engaged in a standoff with federal officers for a total of 40 days. At the end of this time, seven of them, including Ammon and Ryan Bundy who led the expedition, were tried and acquitted of federal charges. Most of the people they led into this crusade to enrich themselves did not fare so well. Six were sentenced to 1-2 years of probation, some of those on house arrest. Two were given 366 days in prison, with one of them given a further three years probation, another two were given 21 and 18 months in prison respectively. One man got off with no sentencing and indeed no trial, for the perfectly sensible reason that he had already been shot to death.
Once again, a group of armed people in a relatively remote facility against the federal government purchased less than two months of resistance with their guns and paid toll in blood and prison time.
And that’s just how it goes down if you’re white and dealing with the feds.
In 2016, we all watched a video with a good deal of tyranny in it. Philando Castile was shot to death by a Minnesota officer who requested of him information about what arms he was carrying and asked him to present documentation for the weapon. Mere possession of the firearm got Castile killed by the government, but the bloodletting did not end there.
Outraged as many of us were Mr. Micah Xavier Johnson decided to do something about his tyrannical government using his army training and some firearms. To his credit (if one can credit a murderer), this is the case from my review in which the number of government agents killed exceeds the number of non-government citizens killed, perhaps owing to his training or perhaps the MOUT environment in which he fought.
Mr. Johnson succeeded in killing a total of 5 police officers and injuring a further nine officers. Of all the anti-government combatants in my review, his is the only case in which there was not a person who believed that they were receiving instructions from God and also the only case in which claiming resources for himself in the form of child wives or land was not the goal. To incite open armed rebellion against the government and overthrow it by force of arms and invert a longstanding system of racism, enabled by the second amendment, was his goal.
Mr. Johnson’s otherwise fairly successful attempt to injure if not destroy the government was brought to a historical end. The local police force in Dallas killed Mr. Johnson by taping an explosive to a bomb removal robot and having the automaton hand-deliver the weapon to Mr. Johnson. He is the first US citizen to be killed by police by robot. It seems that anti-personnel assault rifles and MOUT tactics are not effective against a government killbot.
Bear in mind by the way that this was a local police force. Had the same mentality been at play among federal agents a UAV missile strike would seem the scaled up analog.
What can we take from these case studies? By taking up arms against the government you at a minimum ensure that you will be involved in a protracted legal battle, the chances of escaping that legal battle with your liberties intact are slim, and there is a very good chance that you will simply end up dead.
You cannot use the second amendment to beat the government and secure your liberties, no one ever has. If you would argue that these case studies are not the same as the wave of citizen uprisings you think you could incite, let me remind you that the Bundys and Mr. Johnson intended to lead such uprisings themselves and failed to get them off the ground, and that further the only occasion of armed uprising on the scale you propose ended with the federal government on top on April 9th 1865 at Appomattox.
This isn’t a matter of opinion, it’s a matter of record.
Yet, there are more ways in which the second amendment inhibits our liberties. As already mentioned, Philando Castile was killed because he possessed a firearm, but you don’t even need to possess one for the police to kill you.
Tamir Rice, 12, of Cleveland Ohio possessed a water pistol or the like and was shot by police twice, dying the following day. The police officers suffered no penalty becuase the grand jury did not indict them because the video shown to them showed Tamir drawing his water pistol, which the officers involved believed to be real.
Because of the second amendment, there is a reasonable possibility that police officers will face armed assailants anytime and everywhere, and as such, the courts regularly give them the benefit of the doubt because officers are not necessarily wrong to fear for their lives when facing down a 12 year old boy.
The second amendment and the companies that benefit from it have flooded our country with firearms, and as such police can shoot people with impunity because of their reasonable concern of being shot themselves. Who they are shooting largely comes down to a discussion of racism, but don’t imagine that fair skin will save you, as discovered by Australian Justine Damond. It was in fact she that summoned the police to begin with, and she is now dead. That her police killer was arrested is perhaps a matter of her being white, but there is also the possibility that it had to be done to attend to what was an international incident. Australian citizens get more justice than American ones do in the matter of police shootings in our own country, it seems.
When a policeman can gun down a 12 year old boy and suffer no jail time, we are living in tyranny. When a man can reach for his papers in his car and be gunned down we are living in a police state, and when we declare that the legal device by which these things are possible is critical to preserving our freedoms, we are wrong.
