if 1k followers makes you Tumblr famous then I have a blog that is Tumblr famous, which I disagree with, because not once in my life have I felt Tumblr famous. nor do I want to be.
yeahh I too disagree with it, because that’d be a bit startling to many people if it was the case
I legitimately want to know of what blog has the most followers, to have like a baseline? but alas we shall never know, and must speculate on things like if 1k followers makes you tumblr famous lol

Hi I don’t really know how to word this correctly but I was wondering if you have any thoughts on how costuming informs how fans view the brothers? Specifically during disagreements?
Early seasons fans don’t really know the characters so costumes and props are a large part in informing the audience of how we are meant to view and receive characters.
I personally find Sam has a softer look and combined with being the youngest Dean gets categorised as being the bad guy who led him astray, especially bc he dresses… more edge to his look? Idk the word I’m looking for it’s escaping me.
Specifically with clothing (and maybe casting?) I wonder if people would be as harsh if they were swapped, like literally only that aspect and nothing about them.
Tv is all intentional so I’m just interested in your thoughts
This is an interesting question.I went back and looked at the clothing in some of the brothers early disagreements that came to mind (seasons 1-4). While the brothers dressed more distinctly during the early series (Sam showing a preference for hoodies and a Carhart jacket vs Dean's leather jacket and jewelry). I found that during the fights I remembered most, they didn't seem to be dressed all that differently. A leather jacket is a classic "bad boy" piece of attire, but Dean isn't actually wearing it in a lot of their arguments.
Here's their fight in the Pilot (which I brightened a little bit just to be able to see).

Sam's wearing lighter colors, but what feels more significant to me is the lighting. I always remember Sam's face bathed in shadow as he steps toward Dean with an almost menacing tone, and Dean pushing Sam against the railing.

Their attire also isn't very distinct during their small spat in 1.02, and it's hard for Dean to look imposing in side by side shots.

Sam is wearing his Carhart jacket in "Asylum" and shot from below to accentuate his height.

One would be hard pressed to suggest this episode makes him look like some soft kid. He's teeth-gnashingly angry most of the episode and lashing out.

In the asylum, he looms over Dean as he insults him and Dean looks vulnerable and hurt.

Overall, I think if anything, season 1 portrays Dean as the "rational" and "level-headed" member of the family, shouldered with two loved ones blinded with desperation for revenge.

Note: In the fight in 1.20, Dean's wearing the leather jacket, and I think we can ascribe significance to that—but rather than it casting Dean as a negative influence, it—as "dad's" jacket—seems to distinguish Dean as the "parent" of the group.
Another notable aspect of the gif where Dean pulls Sam and John apart in 1.20 is how the shot accentuates Sam and John's height as compared to Dean... and we often see Sam's size accentuated in scenes where he's angry—whether the shot is captured from below his eyeline, he's making broad gestures that accentuate his wingspan, or he's simply looming over Dean or throwing him.

Sam's softer moments in season 1 are usually ones where he's worried about himself, Dean, or John rather than when he's fighting with anyone. Look at him in "Faith" for example on the phone with John:

The one scene where Sam and Dean have a brief fight and Sam is dressed in a "soft" manner that comes to mind is "Something Wicked" when he's wearing the famous purple dog shirt. But in this scene, they only fight briefly because Sam is confused about Dean's unusual thought process and can sense that he's hiding something. So it's still more of a "Worried about Dean" look in the end.

Season 2 brings Dean's anger boiling to the surface in a way that wasn't present in season 1, but I don't necessarily get much from the clothing here.

Especially in season 1, I think Sam is actually pretty scary and imposing when he's angry. I don't tend to get the impression from his posture or attitude that he's cowed and he never looks vulnerable to me. Dean in season 1 very rarely raises his voice and is almost never the aggressor in their conflicts.

After pledging to watch over Luke Skywalker and spending ten years in exile and making a life together, what will happen when the mistakes they made in their past come back as a new threat?

Prologue- Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3
The moment you arrived on the transport the first thing you noticed was Leia was nowhere to be found. You limped to the pilot's area where Tala sat, you must've fractured your foot when you kicked Vader's metal forearm. 
“Tala, where's Leia?”
The look of guilt on her face and the lack of response made that flare of fury spark in your bones again, you smacked a hand on the back of the pilot chair and spun her around.
“Where is Leia?” you said slowly.
“I had left her to come help you and Ben, I thought the passage was clear of anyone else when I left but when we came back she was gone and the transport was still here.” Tala explained calmly.
You stepped back, laughing in disbelief as you looked at Tala.
“You left a ten year old CHILD alone while the empire was hunting for her?!” you shouted. “Do you know how stupid that was?” 
Tala opened her mouth to speak but you cut her off.
“You worked for the empire, you have to know what inhumane things they do to people and you left a child at the hands of the people who torture and kill innocent people.” your voice cracked. 
Tala went to speak again but you shook your head.
“Get me and my husband to Jabiim now, the sooner Obi-wan heals the sooner we can make a plan to get Leia back.”
“I'm sorry Kilian, I truly am.” Tala apologized.
“Then prove it.” 
You didn't bother to say anything else, limping back to where Obi-wan had laid and Ned-B was watching him and his levels. You went to touch his face but froze when you caught a glimpse of your face in the reflection of the window.
Your eyes, or well just one eye was yellow, the color was a large contrast compared to your other eye that held your normal color. Your hand went up to your face, fingers moving over the newly corrupted eye.
You didn't bother to conceal the gasp that escaped your lips as the weight of what you did crashed over you like a tsunami. You had just gone against everything you stood for the majority of your life. Using the force for your own gain, letting your emotions control your actions, letting your attachment to Obi-wan grow unhealthy and possessive.
You walked backwards, away from the window and Obi-wan and pressed yourself against the wall to physically get yourself as far away from Obi-wan as you could. You let out a cry in pain as the rocks and rubble from when Vader force pushed you across the rough ground that still remained in the skin of your back pressed against the cool metal of the ship, the adrenaline from the fight long gone as you felt dry blood crack and shift across your skin.
“Y/n”
You looked at the voice and saw Tala standing by you, concerned on her face at your position.
“I'm sorry,” You whispered out defeatedly. “I didn't mean to treat you like that. I'm so sorry.”
Tala put a comforting hand on your shoulder, guiding you to sit down on the floor as she reached for the bag of supplies you gave her when you left her and Leia and pulled out the contents, placing them on the floor beside you.
“I'm going to lift your shirt, okay?” Tala said quietly.
You winced at the feeling of the fabric fibers clinging to your skin, the thread mingling with the blood as Tala lifted the shirt to show the expanse of your back. You bit your tongue as Tala began on removing the debris, the quiet clanking of the rocks hitting the metal floor.
“You're not a monster Y/n.” Tala murmured suddenly.
You turned your head slightly, trying to look at her but it was useless.
“How can you say that? You saw me back there with Vader and how I just treated you.” you said bitterly. 
“I think you're mistaking fighting to survive and to protect your loved ones as being wrong and evil. Monsters kill innocent people and take what they can from whoever they want, not caring for anyone's safety.” Tala explained, as she wiped the blood off your back with an antiseptic. The sting of it grounding you slightly as you listen to her speak.
“You feel regret and shame for something you did and thought it was wrong. That doesn't make you a monster, that makes you human.”
Her words doused the fire in you, the guilt and fear remained but had simmered down to a burning ember that was now much easier to tame and accept with a healthier mindset. You felt more like yourself and you realized how close you were to losing yourself in the dark.
Tala placed a bandage on your back, covering the now clean wounds and pulled the ruined shirt over your back again. You turned around so you could look at her face to face and gave her a tired smile.
“Your words mean more to me than you know, thank you.”
Tala smiled back and placed her hand on top of yours and gave a kind squeeze.
“I'm honored, and I promise you we will get Leia back.”
You and Tala sat on the ground for what felt like hours until the ship rattled as it entered the atmosphere, Tala helped you stand up your balanced shaky as you avoided putting weight on your injured foot as Tala went to land the ship while you limped to Obi-wan. He was somewhat conscious as he blinked in confusion, a pained gasp leaving his lips as the ship jostled his body as it landed. Putting a hand on his uninjured arm to keep him steady you leaned over him, his eyes unfocused gaze couldn't meet yours.
“Hold on baby, just hold on for a little longer.” you begged.
You stayed by his side until the hatch of the ship opened and two men came in and took him out on a stretcher, you went to follow but you yelped in pain when you put your full weight on the foot. Ned-B heard your cry and the droid walked over to you, his cold robotic hands wrapping under your legs and lifted you up and walked you out of the ship. Tala turned to  you as she walked alongside Obi-wan on the stretcher.
“We're taking Obi-wan to a Bacta tank! Ayla will help you with your foot and I will grab you in a moment!” Tala shouted before she walked around a corner. Ned-b walked you over to a cot and gently placed you on it as a woman walked over.
“Thank you Neb-B.” you smiled, patting your hand on its hard chest.
The woman kneeled down by your foot and gently lifted it, examining it with care. She hummed in thought before glancing up at you.
“Your fifth metatarsal is slightly fractured.” she explained as she slid off your boot and socks, her hand rested over the bruised skin.
You suddenly remembered your eye and froze, your hand coming up to cradle it. You didn't want these people to think you were sith.
“Ignore my eye,” you murmured nervously, scared of her reaction but all you received was a raised brow.
“Your eyes are fine, unless there's an issue you're having?” Ayla asked.
You put your hand down slowly, looking for anything that had a reflection but Ayla handed you a small mirror from her medkit and you held it up to your face. You smiled at your reflection, no yellow iris in sight, just the normal pigment.
“Did you hit your head commander?” Ayla asked and you blinked.
“I'm sorry? Did you just call me commander?” you asked in disbelief you haven't been called that in so long you almost forgot about it. Ayla just smirked her hands wrapping around your ankle and you could feel the bone in your foot mending back together.
“I was a medic for the 501st battalion, I helped when the infirmary was too full but I was a new jedi knight.” Ayla said before she pulled her hands away. “Does that feel better?”
You rolled your ankle and were pleased to feel no pain in the movement and slid your boot back on.
“It's perfect thank you, Ayla.” you grinned. “I have to go see how my husband is doing but I'm glad you were here.” you hoped she understood what you were trying to say.
“I’m glad you survived as well.” Ayla said kindly before she waved you off. “Please don't let me hold you back, go see your husband.”
 You followed the path you saw Tala take when you first arrived, avoiding shoulder checking people in the small area as you walked around the corner. However, you weren't expecting the large bacta tank to be in the center of the newly accessed area, the machine was lowering Obi-wan's crippled body into the tank. Jogging over you placed your hand on the glass, his body twitching over and over again.
“Y/n,” Tala called down from her spot on the stairs that led to the top of the tank, quickly coming down the steps to meet you. “Ben is fine. He will need to be in here for a few hours at least but there's a small wash area I want you to go and clean yourself off, I put clean clothes out for you as well.”
Your body screamed for a shower, it had been a long time even before everything happened with Leia that you had access to running water. You and Obi-wan had to opt for water canteens and rags when the time called for it in the barren desert. Your eyes casted nervously towards the tank again.
“He will be fine, I also don’t want to take the chance of any bacteria to get into the cuts on your back.”
That…made sense.
“Okay,” you relented. “Show me the way.”
Tala guided you to the small wash area, and she wasn't lying when she said it was small. It had a flimsy curtain that shielded what looked like a crevice in a cave small enough you didn't think you could hold your arms out if you wanted to.
“I know it's not perfect but-”
“Tala it's perfect, thank you.” you cut in, putting a kind hand on her shoulder.
“Alright, I'll see you soon and if Ben's condition changes I'll come get you.”
“Thank you.” you said again. “For everything.”
Tala just gave you a shy smile in response and left you alone. You sighed to yourself and clipped off your lightsaber, placed it next to the pile of clean clothes tala left and began to peel off the sweat and dirt covered layers before you undid the messy braid your hair had been in for the last two days.
You turned on the water and stepped under the spray, closing your eyes in bliss at the lukewarm water drenching your bruised skin. The bandage on your back surprisingly stayed on as you rubbed the dirt off your face, arms, legs, hair, and nails. Turning the water a murky shade of brown as it went down the drain.
You didn't give yourself the luxury of staying in for long, partially due to wanting to go back to Obi-wan and also the guilt of having a shower while Leia was stuck with imperials who were probably interrogating her at that very moment.
That thought alone made you turn the water off and roughly dry off with the small rag Tala had left hanging by the shower. You grabbed the simple pair of black linen pants as well as the simple light blue tunic and slipped them on, you had missed the feeling of clean clothes on your back.
 You quickly slid on a black cloak-like vest and your boots, strapped your lightsaber back on the harness on your thigh and made your way back to Obi-wan.
Only to find him no longer in the tank.
Your mind went to the worst case scenario; his injuries were to servere and the bacta tank couldn't do anything and he was dead.
“Tala!” you shouted looking around for your new friend, walking around quickly.
“In here!” she shouted, poking her head to the corner to a room you didn't even notice your first walk around. You sprinted in the room, your feet skidding and your wet hair whipping in your face at your abrupt stop in front of Tala.
“Where's Obi-wan? Is he okay? Why is he out of the tank? Is he dea-” you rapid fire question came to a halt when Tala simply stepped aside revealing Obi-wan standing in front of you, dressed in clean robes and alive. He had a look on his as he stared at you, one that made your gut twist violently you wanted to throw up.
He knows what you did, what you became for a brief moment.
“I'm so sorry.” you started. “I'm sorry for breaking our promise, for doing what I did, for leaving Leia-”
Obi-wan made the first move quickly, coming up to you and pulling you in his arms, one hand smoothing the hair on the back of your head and the other wrapping around your back. His head was bruised on the top of your head while yours was shoved into the crook of neck.
“You're still the woman I love, that's all that matters to me.” he leaned and whispered for your ears only. “Thank you for doing what you did to protect me.”
You pulled away, running a hand through the now clean hair thanks to sitting in the bacta tank and pulled him close to kiss him just two quick pecks on his chapped lips and pulled away, your hand placed on his chest as you looked up at him with fierce determination.
“Let's get our niece back.”

“Roken.” Tala called out, guiding you and Obi-wan into another area of the cave. You saw large men kneeled down working on a small machine, he looked behind him and shook his head when he spotted you.
“They shouldn't be here.” Roken spat out.
“I know you're upset, but-” Tala was cut off when Roken stood up and walked over.
“I mean it,” he said sternly. “Get them on the first transport out of here.”
You crossed your arms behind your back and shuffled in place, the tension growing faster and faster each second as he pointed at the two of you.
“Too many people are looking for you, you put us all in danger!”
“We need your help.” Obi-wan said.
“So does every kid making a rock float from here to Coruscant!” Roken countered.
“Someone very important to us has been taken, we need your help to get her back.” You argued.
“I'm sorry general and commander but that's not my problem.”
“I wish that were true.” retorted Obi-wan.
Roken sighed and shook his head, walking away but the three of you trailed behind him closely.
“She knows everything. Where we are, what we're doing.” Tala argued. “Roken, if she finds us then we need to prepare for an evacuation.”
“I can't just shut everything down, Tala. everything runs outta here.” Roken dismissed as he leaned down in front of  a control pad.
“Then help us get her back,”  Obi-wan insisted. “You've no idea what the empire is capable of.”
Roken did not like that comment, turning around with an angry look and pointed at you
“This is your wife?” he asked.
“Yes.” Obi-wan said cautiously.
“I had a wife once, just like yours. I knew exactly what she was before we got married and we tried to hide it, but the inquisitors found her anyway! So I know exactly what the empire is capable of.” he fumed.
“Roken,” you spoke softly, he turned to you and you placed a hand on his shoulder. “I know you care for everyone here and you want them safe and I respect you greatly for that, but without your help another life just like how your wife's life was brutally taken away will happen again.”
Rokens face softened at your words and he looked down for a moment before looking back at you.
“Look, if you want my help, you got it.” he offered and you dropped your hand from his shoulder and nodded.
“Tell us everything you know.”
Roken nodded and gestured to you to follow him, leading you to a meeting room that had a small holotable in the center. You, Obi-wan, Tala, Roken, and two others hovered around the table.
Roken smacked the holotable a couple times before the hologram popped up showing a planet. You were standing in between Tala and Obi-wan leaning against the table as Roken zoomed in.
“Nur, it's a water moon,” he said. “We got this off the grid while it was being built, it's all we have but it's in the Mustafar system.”
“That's Vader's system.” Tala pointed out.
“Is Vader there?” Obi-wan asked.
“We don’t think so, our intel shows he is still on his ship but he's close.”
“So that's it?” A scrawny man said from across the table. “Fortress inquisitorius.” 
A woman looked over at the man and glared at him.
“It's impenetrable, Wade.”
You scratched your cheek in thought.
“How far down do you think it goes?” you wondered out loud.
“No idea,” Roken shrugged. “It's their base of operations so it probably has a command center, a training facility.”
“Truth is, nobody knows what it looks like.” The woman next to Drew said. Obi-wan leaned in at the table and tilted his head.
“I don't see any shields.”
“That's because no one would be stupid enough to attack them.” Roken replied.
“We could take those speeders, go at night.” Obi-wan pointed behind him. “I saw some T-47s in the hangar.” he suggested.
“It's suicide.” Roken said.
“Yeah well, we're not soldiers. Those speeders are for hauling sewage.” The woman said.
You stood up straight and planted your hand on the table, catching everyone's attention.
“You may not be soldiers, but we are.” you said, gesturing to you and Obi-wan. Which was the truth, you didn't give three years of your life for nothing. “She's ten years old, we won't leave her there and we’ll go on our own.”
“Your friend can barely stand and I don't think you could handle the base all by yourself.” the woman said, making you raise a brow.
“Wanna bet?” you glared.
“I'll go with them.” Tala chimed in and everyone looked over at her in surprise. “Well, I have officer clearance. I can get you inside and I can get you access .”
Obi-wan stood up from his spot and stepped closer to her, his brow creased deeply.
“Is your cover still intact?”
Tala shook her head, unsure from Obi-wan's question.
“We’ll find out soon enough.”
“Tala-”  you spoke, worry evident on your face as you looked at your friend.
“We're wasting time, get my ship fueled and ready.” Tala demanded, cutting you off. She didn't give you a chance to speak again before she stormed off.

Your head rested on Obi-wan's lap as you tried to get much rest after your fight with Vader, you had tried to convince Obi-wan to rest as well but he refused politely. Your eyes were half opened as the family hum of the ship rocked you gently into an almost asleep state but the sound of a small object dragging against metal kept you awake. You twisted your hand and pulled the object to you and gripped it tight in your hand.
“Stop trying to force it Obi” you mumbled tiredly. “You heard what Tala said earlier, your mind needs to heal as well.”
You adjusted yourself to lay on your back rather than your side and looked up at Obi-wan and handed back the object you now recognized was the holoprojector Bail had given Obi-wan years ago. He looked down at you with a disappointed face, slightly dejected at his rusted skill.
“How are you feeling?” you asked.
“I’m okay,” he answered. “Sore, but okay.”
Anakin played a cheap shot, clearly still bitter from Obi-wan leaving him after he burned and wanted payback. You were glad to see that only his arm was damaged compared to his former padawans disabled state.
“How did you do it?” he asked quietly and you looked at him in confusion.
“Do what?”
“How were you able to fight him…” he paused for a moment. “Like he wasn't Anakin.”
You were quiet for a moment as you gathered your thoughts.
“I didn't care,” you admitted. “Not when the dark side had me in its grips, all I wanted was revenge. To make him suffer like he made you suffer, like he made Padme suffer, like he made those kids suffer.” you closed your eyes when you felt him run a hand through your hair. 
“I care now though,”  you whispered. “Even when I know I shouldn't and when I saw what it did to my eye and how scared I felt when I let my emotions get the best of me I can't imagine what Anakin felt when it first happened to him.”
You opened your eyes again and sat up, Obi-wan followed your movement with his eyes as you put a hand on his knee.
“I feel terrible about it, but at the same time I'm glad I did it. It felt so wrong leaving you like that…I don't even want to think about what would've happened if I left you there.” 
“I shouldn't have asked you to do that, knowing how stubborn you are I should've known you would come after me.”
You chuckled lightly at the statement.
“From here on out, we do this together, as a team.” you said, holding out your hand. “Deal?”
Obi-wan hesitated for a long moment but eventually grabbed your hand and shook it, you lifted your conjoined hands and kissed his knuckles, your personal way of sealing the deal.
Tala walked in, she was dressed back in her imperial uniform as she hovered by the door, the look on her face was serious.
“We’re almost there, I'll drop the ship low enough above the water for you two to jump in and from there I'll override one of the underwater entrances to get you in.” she handed you and Obi-wan breathers. “Be ready in about three minutes.”
You quickly prepared, removing the pouch attached to you to avoid anything more to weigh you down while you swan and braided your hair to be out of your face. You were nervous, unsure what you'd witness in the fortress but you refused to let that make you hesitate.
“You ready?” Tala asked.
“Yeah,” you nodded, glancing at Obi-wan who also gave a confirm nod “Open the hatch!”
The damp wind rushed over your body as the hatch opened, the sound of the roaring engine loud in your ears as you looked over the edge. The drop down to the water looked about thirty three feet, the height made you swallow nervously.
“Don’t think, don't think, don't think!” you shouted to yourself over the wind before placing the breather into your mouth and jumped.
You couldn't hear Obi-wan's worried shout as you leaped, quickly crossing your arms and keeping your legs straight as possible as you plunged into the bluish green water. Everything around you went deathly quiet as the water filled your ears. Your surroundings are slightly blurry underwater but you could make out the explosion of bubbles as Obi-wan entered the water. You began to swim to the large building, fish and other creatures floating past you as you pushed yourself through the slightly murky water.
“I'm overriding an entry point, it should be right ahead of you.” Talas' voice appeared in your ear though the commlink. You and Obi-wan swan ahead, the entry opening above you slowly as you swan to the top.
When you dragged yourself out of the entrance, the small room was silent beside you and Obi-wan wringing out your water logged clothes. The sound of water splashing on the smooth black floor echoed loudly. The two of you went to the doors, each of you against the wall on either side as you heard the hiss of the doors sliding open and a stormtrooper walking in to investigate the noise. Obi-wan acted quickly, jumping forward and wrapping his arms around the soldiers neck and dragged him back to the pool of water and held him tightly until he went limp in his arms. He tossed the unconscious body into the water and came back to the door, pulling out his commlink.
“We’re in.” he said, his voice low and rough as he stalked forward in the hall. You haven't seen him this focused and aggressive in so long you forgot how good it looked on him. You cleared your throat and refocused, this wasn't the time to think about how good Obi-wan looked.
“Where is she, Tala?” you whispered.
“Detention areas in a secure sector, just keep heading north.”
Suddenly Obi-wan yanked on your arm and shoved you  against the wall. You braced yourself for your head to hit the hard metal at the quick move but was relieved to feel Obi-wan's hand cradling the back of your head as he pressed himself closely to you. His large frame  was blocking your view but you heard the quiet hum of a droid go past you.
“Seeker droids.” He whispered into his commlink, guiding you to hide around the corner.
“I see it,” Tala confirmed. “It looked like they're everywhere, you'll need to-” her voice cut out.
“Tala?” you asked. “Tala, can you hear me?” you called out worriedly.
You and Obi-wan sprinted as the seeker droid rounded the corner again, stealthily running over to another hall and quickly shut it.  You crouched down low as Obi-wan stood straight against the wall when it came up to the door and peered into the small window. You held your breath as it scanned for any life forms, only releasing it when you heard it float away.
“Tala?” Obi-wan called out.
There was no response.
The sound of footsteps coming down the hall made you curse.
“Maker, give me a break.” you hissed, you and Obi-wan splitting off and climbing behind the large slanted beams supporting the building across each other. Your body leaned back awkwardly against the metal.
“This place gives me the creeps.” A stormtrooper commented to his buddy.
“Hopefully we won't be stationed here for long.” he replied.
Yours and Obi-wan's commlink crackled as Talas voice on the other line spoke out.
“Ben?”
You quickly covered the commlink speaker with you hand when the stormtroopers froze.
“Did you hear that?”
You leaned to the side and saw them pull out their blaster and retreat back down the hall where they came, you began to panic when they stepped forward to look directly where Obi-wan was hiding but a sudden thump in the distant made them turn their head
“Over there, let's go.” One of the troopers pointed out, running down the hall.
You leaped down from your spot and looked at Obi-wan, a proud look on your face as you walked quickly the opposite way the troopers went. His strength within the force was already returning and it made you happier than you wanted to admit.
“What happened?” Obi-wan whispered, glancing behind the both of you to make sure no one was following you.
“I had some company, but it's been taken care of.” Tala assured him.

You felt like you've been walking down the same hall for hours now, each hall being a bland duplicate of the last with the occasional turn. The same door being the same dull gray over and over again.
You might lose your mind.
“Ben. Y/n. Where are you?” Tala asked as you turned another corner.
“I think we just found the secure sector.” Obi-wan said and you glanced up. This door was different, it still had the same gray matt finish but on each side had a bright red Imperial symbol on each side. Obi-wan put the key in and the doors revealed another hall doused in a dark red light, Leia had to be close. You started to run, only stopping when a new door had to be opened. Being so focused in made you run halfwaythrough  another hall before you even processed the new shade of golden orange surrounding you. Looking over at Obi-wan, who now had a horrified look on his face.
“Obi, what's wrong-” you asked, looking to see what he was staring at only for your words to die on your tongue. A sea of rows upon rows of bodies encapsulated in an amber looking substance, a multitude of species frozen in time before your very eyes.
“What is it?” Talas asked.
“I think we just found out what was hiding down here.” Obi-wan said slowly, discomfort very evident in his voice. “This place isn't a fortress.” 
“It's a tomb.” you muttered appalled at what you were seeing as you began to walk slowly back to where Obi-wan was. multiple jedis, women, men, and even a few padawans with their training helmets still on. You swallowed the bile climbing up the back of your throat when you say one child's peculiar terrified face.
“Is this the reason inquisitors are hunting us? To harvest Jedi?” you gaped.
Obi-wan froze at one specific person, his face visibly paling so much you could see the color leave his face from a couple feet away.
“What's wrong?” You asked alarmed.
“Y/n, don’t come over here.” Obi-wan said seriously.
That tone he used made you even more nervous and you moved to see what he was looking at but he quickly mauvered coming at you at a freakish speed and pulled you away. You fought against his grip as he wrapped his arms around your chest.
“Obi-wan, let me go.” you grunted angrily, as you twisted in his grip. “Obi-wan!”
Your hands came to his and you had to use the force to give you enough strength to counter his  to pry his hands away from you which allowed you to then rip his arms off of you and ran to where Obi-wan a moment before. 
Once you processed what you were looking at you desperately wished you listened to him. Hovering in front of you. A tholothian woman, with golden umber skin, and purple eyes stared back at you. The hairs on the back of your neck stood up, the blood from your own face draining away.
You knew those eyes.
“Master Stass?” you breathed out, the air in your lungs being ripped away by the invisible force that was grief. It seemed the world beneath you shifted, like a tectonic plate giving you your own personal earthquake. You pressed your hand on the glass and dropped your head, a silent sob racking over your body.
Your body was basically limp when Obi-wan dragged you away from your former master. his arms around your back being the only holding you as you buried your face in his chest, a broken scream ripped from your throat that was muffled by the thick material of Obi-wan's tunic.
“I know,” Obi-wan soothed, his head bruised in your hair and he held you tight. “I'm so sorry.”
Of course he knew. he had lived through the same loss of Qui-gon all those years ago, but then you were both Padawans and the roles you and Obi-wan were in now were revered.
You were tired of crying and constantly losing things you loved and cared about due to the empire.
“Young Padawan, you wear your heart on your sleeve.” Master Stass kneeled down in front of you.
You looked up at her with red eyes, the council had pulled you aside after a mission went wrong due to you protecting  another jedi who got injured during battle resulting in you leaving your station. The council had given you a very strict talk about attachments and the adhering to jedi code and warning if you were to mess up again you'd be suspend and or expelled from the order.
“You were wrong, master.” you wiped away your tears with your sleeve. “I'm not meant to be a jedi, the council even said my emotions are hindering me.”
Which was true, in a sense. You've grown very serious attachments to your master and Obi-wan. The woman who basically raised you and the man who is your closest friend and secretly loved. The fear of losing them was something that followed you through every sunrise and every sunset. You've had issues of forcvison'sns being triggered, most of them happening when you lost a grip on your emotions and they were beginning to hinder you in multiple aspects of your training.
 But those attachments made you want to be better, to train harder and to protect fiercely.
How could that be bad?
“You are a person who is very in tune with your feelings,  but I do not perceive that as a bad thing young one as that is how the force created you.” Master stass put a hand under your chin and lifted it gently, a gesture for you to hold your head high. “Do not think of a thing  you cannot change as a weakness, use it to its potential to do good in a healthy way. Wear your strengths and flaws with pride and through that I believe you will be a great jedi one day my young apprentice, perhaps one that can show a new way of life.”
You shook your head.
“Master, the council said emotions and attachment were-” 
Master Stass held out a hand, silencing you.
“Trust in the force, if you ever stray away I will guide you home.”
You came back to your face still buried in Obi-wan's chest, your tears made the material wet as it soaked up your grief. You pulled away to look at the man in front of you, who quietly wiped away your tear tracks with the pads of his thumbs as he looked at you with worry. Stepping away from him you slowly went back to your beloved master.
“Master,” you spoke softly, your hand pressing against the glass as you looked in her eyes. “I'm sorry I couldn't protect you like you protected me. The loss is a part of me now but I will use these feelings to protect the people still here.”
“Help, somebody help. Please!” Leia's voice echoed through the force, disnat and scared. You looked at Obi-wan in fear.
“Tala,” Obi-wan said urgently. “We need a distraction!”
“Why, what happened?”
“Just do it, now!” you shouted and you began to run again.
The closer you got to Leia the stronger you felt her through the force, her fear acting as a guide to where she is.
“There!” you pointed out a door with another red symbol on it, you ran to open it but Obi-wan called out to you. He pointed out the electrical panels that controlled the lights and doors to that room and pulled out his lightsaber and slashed the panel. The door opened, leading to a large interrogation room, with a red circle on the floor illuminating the room just enough for you to see two stormtroopers guarding Leia. 
You moved quickly, moving to the one on the right. Your footsteps light against the tile as you creeped up behind them and slowly raise your lightsaber to their temple and activate the weapon.  The trooper let out a quiett grunt as the blade entered through one side of his head and through the other before drooping to the ground. Obi-wan went full aggressor and repeatedly attacked the trooper before they also dropped dead. 
Running to where Leia was strapped down you and Obi-wan quickly undid the restraints and placed her on the ground. Getting on your knees you smiled widely at the sight of her being unharmed.
“You're both alive, they told me you were dead.” she frowned. 
You pulled a stray hair covering her forehead and tucked it away behind her ear.
“We’re okay. They wouldn't have been able to kill us before we got you home, we’re far too stubborn for that. Are you okay? Did they hurt you?”
“I didn't tell them anything.” she promised.
“We know.” Obi-wan said gently. “Come with us, we're going to get you home.”

You ran through the maze of halls again as Obi-wan held onto Leia's hand, keeping your head down as you passed through the tomb again. Focusing on the fact there was nothing you can do about your master without endangering Leia, Obi-wan, and yourself. 
Focused on trying to get out of the base and watching for troopers you totally forgot about the seeker droids roaming around the halls until the three of you were walking down the hall and heard the obnoxious alarm beeping right behind you, cursing as it began to follow you.
“This is fine, it's just us around here. I'll just break the droid with my saber before the laram sounds.” you said getting you saber ready right as the main alarm began to go off, the sound echoing off the walls. “Okay, nevermind. Run. Run. Run!”  
Obi-wan whipped out his commlink.
“Tala! We're out in the open!” Obi-wan shouted.
There was no response for a moment but soon enough you heard a panting Tala call back.
“Where are you?”
You didn't get a chance to respond as a blaster shot whizzed by your ear, turning on your lightsaber you lunged and deflected a shot from hitting Leia right in the back. You force pulled the seeker droid to you and sliced the machine in half while Obi-wan continued to send the two stormtroopers at the end of the hall blaster shots back their way. One of the shots went through the chest of the stormtrooper on the left leaving one standing. Obi-wan moved fast and closed in on him before spinning and cutting them in half, spinning his saber in a dramatic flare.
“Come on, follow Ben!” you ushered Leia quickly, deflecting blasts from two more troopers before running away.
The scenery changed once you turned down a new hall, the walls now showing the underwater landscape against the window panes instead of matte black like before. Multiple stormtroopers and a few imperial workers swarmed both the entryways in the halls.
“Hide!” Obi-wan told Leia, who ran to hide behind a lip of the window seal. Blocking herself from the fire of blaster shots. Obi-wan deflected the shot with ease, his mastery of the Soresu form still very much intact, tight and controlled. Focusing on defensive rather than offense. You never mastered one form of lightsaber combat, your arenal of combat moves continually pulling from the Ataru and Djem So forms. Preferring speed and using your strength in the force to use aggressive attacks.
You ran and dropped to the floor, sliding across the smooth material of the floor and sliced the enemies legs off, their dismembered upper half thumping beside you. Shoving ther body away from you stood up and found your back pressed against Obi-wan's working as a team to take down the ever growing group of stormtroopers. 
“Just like old times huh, Kenobi?!” you grunted as the ache in your arms grew.
One of the blaster shots Obi-wan deflected and smacked the control panel, closing the door as another wave of stormtroopers and shocktroopers were coming at you. The blastershot malfunctioning the door making it stuck.
“Ben the window!” Leia shouted.
You and Obi-wan turned and saw a large crack in the glass, the crack webbing out and growing larger and larger as each second passed. Obi-wan shot his hand out, preventing the glass from shattering and drawing you all. The troopers began to pry the door open but you held your hands out and fought to keep the doors closed with the force, however it was a fast losing battle with one person against seven.
“Ben. Y/n!” Tala shouted, finally finding your small group.
“Tala!” you shouted out relieved to see her okay.
“Tala get her out of here, i'll hold it!.” Obi-wan grunted out as the crackling of the glass grew larger. You looked back at Obi-wan, sweat growing on your face as you fought desperately to hold the door closed.
“Tell me when!” you shouted.
Obi-wan moved his hand, the cracking sound of the glass growing louder the closer it traveled to you.
“Now!”
You dropped you hand and ran back right as the glass shattered and a wave of water came crashing down the hall, side sweeping the troopers.
“Run!” Tala screamed at the both of you.
You and Obi-wan stumbled forward, jumping over the dead bodys and ran for your life as the water roared after you. Tala smacked the control panel right before you and OBi-wan ran through, the doors closing right before the water could escape with floating bodys drifting around like a fish in a tank. Water began to seep from the seal of the door as you caught your breath.
“That's not going to hold for long.” Tala said, kneeling down and handing you and Obi-wan a coat from the two imperial workers on the floor. 
“Put these on.”

“There's no way this is going to work.” you mumbled under your breath walking beside Tala as Obi-wan hid Leia under his coat. Her small body created a large lump on his right side as the four of you walked across the landing dock. Imperials were everywhere you looked, everyone panicking as the alarm still blared repeatedly through the large base.
“Almost there.” Tala muttered.
You kept your head down, not having a hat to cover your face as you kept a nervous hand on your lightsaber in your pocket. The dock was cleaning up from people, soon enough you would be off this planet.
“A traitor!” a voice shouted loudly.
The four you spun around and saw the third sister, saber drawn with a small army of stormtroopers and shocktroopers behind her.
“A child and an old couple. Was it worth it?” the third sister sneered. “Betraying everything you are?”
Obi-wan pushed Leia behind him while you stepped behind Leia, the two of you created a small area of protection for her as you began to be surrounded with blasters pointed all around you.
“This was never who I was.” Tala said.
The third sister raised her lightsaber at her menacingly.
“Then you die, for nothing”
You put a hand on Leia's shoulder, anxiety bubbling in you as even more blasters were raised. You closed your eyes prepared to get shot when you heard the loud rumble of a ship appear above you. Looking up as two fighter ships flew down and began shooting at the imperials surrounding you, loud explosions and fire quickly invading the area. You snagged a balster off the ground and urged everyone to move. You, Tala, and Obi-wan fought off the few stragglers as you moved closer to the edge of the landing dock as the third sister followed.
The second figthershipped landed roughly on the ground sparks flying as the top of the ship came down and Sully poked her head out.
“Get in!” she shouted.
You quickly lifted Leia into the ship and followed her before leaning out the window to pull Obi-wan and Tala up. The top closing as the first figthership began to shoot at the third sister, distracting her from getting any closer. The ship shot off, you stumbled at the speed as Sully yelled at Wade to stop his attack.
Not being able to see what was going on, the sound of an explosion made you flinch as a pained shout came from Sully, calling out to her friend.

The air was solemn when you walked onto the main ship, everyone walked slowly as equations and disappointed tugged at your bones. Roken walked in smiling, but his face quickly fell when he was the dejected looks on everyone's face.
“Where's Wade?” he asked.
There the lack of response gave Roken his answer, he closed his eyes and sighed.
“I guess your soldiers now.” you said, turning to Tala. “I'd get the girl a drink.”
Tala nodded sadly and walked off while Sully sat down. 
Shrugging off the imperial jacket, you went to the window and watched Nur fade away in the distance. The guilt of having to leave Mater Stass alone on that planet ate away at you.
“Are you okay?” Leia asked.
You turned around and saw her sitting by Obi-wan, who also looked at you in concern. The sight of them alone made the loss more bearable, you may not have been able to help your master but at the very least they were okay. 
“Yeah, I'm okay.” you smiled sadly.
Leia looked down at Obi-wan's hand and reached up placing hers on top of his, he looked down and looked at her so softly it made emotion grip at your chest as he turned his hand and gingerly held her hand, rubbing a comforting thumb across the back of Leia's hand. The two smiled at each, providing each other a comfort they didn't know they needed.

Hacks 2.03 and 2.04 Thoughts
Like Ava, I’m trusting the process even when it’s painful, and I’m still watching with an eye toward critical generosity. That being said, some (though certainly not all!) of my thoughts verge on the critical this week as a heads up. Thoughts are below the cut for spoilers (because I had to get this word vomit out so I could start my actual workday haha)
1. I’ve seen a few other people say this already, but the episodes feel a little more disjointed this season with the episodic nature of being on the road and on tour. I don’t mind that in and of itself, but I think it’s also led to this season’s feeling less cohesive in the overarching narrative at least in part because we’re being told more things this season vs. last season when we actually saw most of the action (e.g., we keep hearing that Deborah’s bombing, but, until ep 4, we were largely seeing her get laughs and punchlines in, even if they weren’t the best). So rather than *seeing* the process, we’re often hearing about it via meta commentary for better or worse (again, I think you do what you can with 8 episodes and what seems like an ambitious story to tell and tour to take the characters on)
2. I really loved the scene where Deborah steps in and makes Weed stop the bus to let Ava go look for her dad’s ashes, and the final “fuck it” moment of shedding her fur coat to climb into a literal dumpster to help look was exactly the kind of narrative payoff and emotional catharsis I know and love from this show!
3. Deborah’s always had the capacity for meanness and real cruelty toward others, but this season I feel like we’re seeing more of it directed at strangers, people in the workplace, and even fans--all of whom in S1 we saw Deborah being fairly collegial and even downright friendly with (which set her up from the start, imo, as different from, say, a Miranda Priestly, even though she could be just as cutting). Again, I think part of it is the seeing vs telling thing - I know theoretically that Deb’s frustrated about the tour going poorly, so it would make sense for her to be lashing out more. But because we’re seeing so little of it, I’m not feeling it as much
4. On the other hand, Deborah’s deliberately making Ava jealous (sometimes using and tossing aside others to do it) feels exactly the right amount of petty, and the way she’s doing it, MY GOD, it’s fucking L Word levels of gay 
5. Curious to see what we do with all of Ava’s very vocal pledges to clean living and very visible backsliding (largely encouraged by those around her, which makes sense! The entertainment business is a hard place for sobriety, as are a lot of the most visible spaces for queer life)
6. Look...I could write a whole separate post on ep 4 alone, but bulleted thoughts:
I get that it’s necessary for Deborah’s growth (comedic and personal) both to bomb in this painful obvious way AND ALSO to have some of the really shitty ways she’s talked about whole groups of people drawn out into the open, not for laughs but for scorn. THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT LESS PAINFUL TO WATCH. Holy shit an entire childhood spent in comedy clubs and bar basements, and that’s still in the top 3 worst things I’ve seen go down on a stage
The first 10 minutes or so...idk. I get that we’ve got a queer cast and not totally straight writing staff and all, but a lot of the jokes felt less like we were having a good in-on-the-joke kind of time and more of a laugh at the expense of queer women (like c’mon, why does the first woman to approach Ava have to be creepy about it?) Going into it (esp after having heard so much about how queer fans would LOVE this ep), I think I wanted The L Word Olivia Cruise episode vibes, and instead, it felt like I was watching Friends at first
BUT by the end, the episode felt like it had swung around enough so we could see that Deborah was the problem (the internalized misogyny, the way that she has such deep-rooted problems with a lesbian audience, the doubling down on it all), but I don’t think I personally ever shook my unease from the beginning of the episode
I really, deeply appreciated Ava’s conversation with Deborah during the manicure (so many thoughts about hands and queer erotics...). It gives a lot more nuance to conversations about sexuality than we generally get on screen. Esp after Ava’s brash comments in early S1, this felt like a chance for Ava to be serious with Deborah; she isn’t trying to shock Deborah to get the upper hand anymore, but is instead talking through a lot of things she’s had to process and think through herself, and I SO, SO appreciated it. 
I do hope we return to some of this because I think Ava can and should have a chance to talk to Deborah after that set... echoing a brief conversation I had with @softdeb, the molly-fueled awkward dancing at sea was, um, a choice, and I hope it’s not the last we’ll see of that arc
Also the question of Deborah’s relationship to desire and intimacy felt not nearly so settled as some comments in interviews made it out to be! It feels live and open to me. This isn’t an argument for canonicity or anything, but I do think there’s still much to be interrogated after that meltdown at sea
Oh Marcus... I can and will not talk about the puppy who deserves better 
Deborah’s phone call to Marcus was also so very good. I have a lot of care for both of these two deeply flawed, human characters--and a lot of thoughts about their history--and seeing them have this moment of being able to see each other/be seen while sitting amidst the rubble of all the ways they’ve fucked up was gorgeous. It’s what I’m here for in this show, and ending on that note was enough to make me hopeful

i’ve already exposed myself as an absolute loon when it comes to this song and you can read the whole breakdown here
but tl;dr it’s a song about relying too much on a person and needing to break free and be independent but not in a toxic sort of way, more in a for personal growth and the best for everyone because co-dependence holds everyone back and i really, really, really love that in context of beth and her children, her learning to step back and not smother them but also not give so much of herself that she disappears entirely because that’s not good for them in the long run
basically it’s sort of a thesis statement for beth’s underlying s1 arc
plus it’s just like, heavy and haunting and absolutely gorgeous and not to be like, unreasonably pretentious, moves me and i love it

the song is all about leaving behind the things weighing you down and moving into a brighter, more free future and i love love love how that plays with the duality of beth hiding the wire and securing her source of information for the secret service BUT ALSO marking this moment as a turning point for beth and rio because it absolutely is.
(like not just the fact that they’ve resumed a physical relationship but rio’s invited beth deeper into his world and we’re seeing beth crack on a level we really haven’t before)
this season is leaning SO HARD into duality and the tangled up truths and lies between them and i am absolutely UNHINGED over it
i also really love the like, passionate ballad nature of it juxtaposed over this twisted, extremely sexy moment (intercut with dean joyfully trying to seize hold of his new hobby only to be IMMEDIATELY denied)
there are just so many layers to it and i love all of them

4x04 - the beth and jane/rio getting the drop on fitz montage
the whole theme of this song is two people tearing each other apart and destroying the bones of their former intimacy which like, hello subject matter aptitude and it’s told through this GLORIOUSLY dramatic hurricane at sea imagery with ships being dragged below the waves by the hurricanes the two people have called down on each other set to a gorgeous over the top orchestral score
on a yrical note, i love that the song is basically the same verse over and over (interspersed with the chorus, obvs) and the only change is me vs you when it comes to who brought the storm down on them
basically, if you were challenged to come up with a song that represented two peak dramatique heaux nightmare factories locked in a never ending game of deadly cat and mouse, you couldn’t top this.
i am ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED with the choice to pair it with a montage of beth finally pulling the trigger (with foresight and intent, shooting rio was p obvs a oh shit look what i did moment), a milestone rio’s been dragging her (down) towards since the beginning of s2 AND using him to do it, dragging him (down) into her mess (m ade all the more messy when you consider he was the target of it) (i just! love it! so! much!)

UGH GOD when that high hat and bass kicked in the first time i was like oh shit we are in for some DRAMA and sure enough we were as well as a more sexual montage than anything you’d find in actual porn.
idk, the fact that they chose this deep, dark, mournful about lost love to an elongated montage slow motion montage of rio watching beth make fake cash and deciding not to kill her for nearly killing him doEs stuFf to me
all i’m saying is johnathan leahy ships brio harder than any of us and is a more dramatique heaux than either of them, which are two really impressive feats to achieve
AND THEN!!! AND THEN!!!!! they CHOPPED THE SONG UP!!!!! so they were able to take advantage of the dawning drama of the opening bars BUT ALSO include the closing stanza about wearing the marks the subject of the song gave the singer like a scar where they took his heart from him and the INTENTIONALITY of that creative choice puts me on the FLOOR

honeslty, lowkey surprised this one made my top five. not because it isn’t a fabulous song deployed with johnathan leahy’s usual mastery, but bc i didn’t realize how much i loved it until making this list
i don’t really have like, a deep, lyrically rooted storytelling reason for loving it, i just think the way they used it in the show is Such A Vibe
the way the vibrating synthy tones and underlying organ kicks in while rio’s getting in the elevator has this beautiful held breath anticipatory quality to it that works SO WELL to set up the montage of rio strutting out back into his life while turner gets murdered (a scene i have some uh, complicated feelings about but setting those aside), and the bolands’ fresh start to the tune of bouncy drums and looping vocals
idk it’s such a shining note to end the first episode of a new season on, i remember feeling refreshed and super hype for what’s to come
notable lyrics: no lyrics, just the vibe of the opening bars
tl;dr i really, really, REALLY love how this show uses music. you can tell they put a lot of time and effort and thought into it and while i know the trajectory isn’t working for everyone, personally i love it. granted, as you can see from this list, i clearly love the shit out of a down tempo dramatic ballad, so. if you are more of a bangers and bops person, i would point you to @nickmillerscaulk’s inbox as she is a Certified Bangers Afficianado.

Hello~ Thank you Anon for finding my gifs high quality ;;w;; I always find them so trashy compared to some of my mutuals that make such clean gifs. I made a tutorial a few years ago, but I changed my way of making gifs so here’s a new one ! Hope it will help you, I tried to be as accurate and detailed as possible, but if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to send me another ask ! You can also try to read other tutorials on tumblr ! STEP 1 : DOWNLOAD VIDEOS
First of all, you will have to download the video you want to gif. Since I make anime gifs, I usually download my videos on nyaa.si (720p or 1080p). Your video must be .mp4
STEP 2 : CHOOSE THE MOMENT YOU WANT TO GIF
So you open Photoshop. Go to File > Import > Video frames to layers. Select your video. A window should pop-up. This is when you will select the moment you want to GIF.

Check “Selected range only”. Select the moment you want by moving the sliders. Once it’s selected, click on OK.
STEP 3 : DELETING FRAMES 
So you clicked on OK and imported the video to frames. You will have something like this :

Now you can delete the frames that you don’t want to appear on the gif. You just have to select the frame (will have a light gray border, like on the first frame on the pic below), and click on the bin icon which is below the frames.

Then, we will select all the frames. Go to the drop down menu and choose “select all frames”. The drop down menu is here :

With all your frames selected (all the frames have a light gray border), you can change the time. Most of the time, I use 0,04s, but sometimes if the gif is too short I change it to 0,05s.
STEP 4 : ANIMATION BAR TO TIMELINE AND RESIZING
After that, we will convert the animation bar to a timeline. Select all your frames, and click on this :

A timeline will appear.

Then, go to the right bottom of your photoshop, where your layers are. Select all your layers (=scroll up or down, hold shift and click on the last layer).

Now, go to Filter > Convert To Smart Object. You will have only one line in the timeline like so :

Then, you will change the dimensions. You go to Image > Image Size. A window will pop up. You enter the dimensions you want (540px, 268px…) and click on OK. I don’t know if it happens to others but when I change the dimensions, a white border appears around the whole gif, as you can see below (idk why).

So I usually increase the dimensions by 2 px (for a 268 px gif I choose 270 px for example), so I can crop the borders and still get the right dimensions for my gif.
STEP 5 : SHARPEN THE GIF
Now, the important stuff. How to make your gif as HQ as possible. First of all, the settings really depend on the anime. Every now and then I have to change my settings because it doesn’t look good with this or that anime. BUT my go to thing to do is :
- Duplicate the gif : click right on the gif layer and choose Duplicate the layer

- Set the opacity of the above layer to 10%-30%. Most of the time, I use 30%, but depending on the anime, it might be too blurry in the end. For this gif of Itadori, I decided to go with 10%.

- Use the glaussian blur : Select the same layer and go to Filter > Blur > Glaussian Blur.  A window will pop up, choose 1 px.

- Use Surface blur : now, you’ll select the layer below and use the surface blur (Filter > Blur > Surface Blur). The numbers may vary a lot here, because I want to make the gif look the cleanest possible but without erasing too much details. Most of the time I use 3 to 6 ratio, or 4 to 8, really depends on the details and the anime. Here, I’m gonna use 3 pixels and 6 levels.
NB : The gif might become a little transparent on the borders, so I usually create a black layer that will go below all the layers.

- After that, we will sharpen the gif. Select the same layer (the one below), you go to Filter >  Sharpen > Smart Sharpen. Then you just adjust the sharpening to your liking. As for me, it’s most of the time 120% (varies between 80-150%) and 0,3px. Be careful not to oversharpen. Your gif will look worse than if it wasn’t sharpened. I’m choosing 120% here.

- To make the sharpening smoother, I usually go in the blending options (double click on the little arrows next to Smart Sharpen, as seen below) and choose darken (the blending mode depends on the scene, on brighter gifs lighten might look better, try it and see what you prefer).

STEP 6 : COLORING THE GIF
You can save it as it is or color it so the colors are prettier. For that you will use the settings there :

Or you can use a .psd already made (you can download them on resources blogs). Here, I’ll be using one I made. So you open the file (File > Open) and you select the one you downloaded. Click on the folder of the psd and drag it on your gif.

Be careful ! The more you change the colors, the grainier the gif is gonna get. You can find some tutorials on how to color gifs on tumblr, I’m definitely no pro lmao I usually click everywhere until it kinda works out ^^’
STEP 7 : SAVING THE GIF
Now it’s time to save the gif ! FINALLY ! Go on File > Save for web. You will have a lot of settings. First, before saving make sure the looping option is set on “forever”. Then, be sure that your gif is NOT wider than 10Mb (i think it is the latest limit, i’m not sure ^^’). If it is, try do delete some frames or adjust the colors, select pattern… Play around with the settings until it’s under 10Mb. Then, click on save and it’s done !!!

Fate and Phantasms #109: Emiya (Assassin)

Today on Fate and Phantasms we’re continuing our trek through Fate Zero with the assassin class Edgemiya, with the ability to alter his own time and everyone’s luck. Despite all his cool powers, he’s still pretty depressed. Oh well, it’s probably nothing a few more builds won’t fix.

Race and Background
Emiya made a deal with the spirit of humanity to protect the human race, which is exactly why he’d make a great Hobgoblin... I’m kidding, he’s a Variant Human, for +1 Dexterity and Charisma, Arcana proficiency (or whatever else a rocket launcher would fall under idk), and the Crossbow Expert feat, allowing you to ignore loading crossbows, fire well with enemies in melee range, and dual wield hand crossbows. You can control the flow of time, you should be able to fire more than once a round.
You’ve fought in plenty of wars, but it’s hard to call a professional assassin anything but a Criminal. This gives you Deception and Stealth proficiencies.
Ability Scores
This is a pretty mono-ability build- make your Charisma as high as possible. You’re a pretty scary guy, and you shoot good. That’s charisma. Somehow. After that is Dexterity- you’re really stealthy, and really, really fast. Your Intelligence isn’t half bad. You can use plenty of fancy modern weapons, and you can hunt down mages to use them on. Constitution doesn’t have to be that high, you don’t need health if you just don’t get hit. Your Strength isn’t great, but it’s enough to get the job done. We’re dumping Wisdom, though-your entire characterization is about how much you regret making that deal with Alaya. You’re not bad at noticing things though, we’ll just have to patch that up with skills.
Class Levels
1. Rogue 1: You have a particular set of skills, and rogues start off with the most, so let’s spend a little time here for now. First level rogues get proficiency with Dexterity and Intelligence saving throws, as well as four rogue skills- Acrobatics to enhance your mobility, Intimidation for that no-nonsense attitude of yours, and Perception and Investigation to hunt down and destroy your enemies.
You also get Expertise, doubling your proficiency bonus for Stealth and Intimidation. Presence Concealment A+ is some good stuff.
You can also add a Sneak Attack bonus to damage done by attacks with advantage or directed at creatures who are occupied with other creatures. Right now, it’s just 1d6. You also learn Thieves’ Cant. It’s a language.
2. Warlock 1: Alaya’s kind of a lot of things to a lot of people, but Hexblades work best for us so a Hexblade it shall be here. As a hex warlock, you learn how to place a Hexblade’s Curse on a creature. It lasts one minute, or until one of you two dies, and you can use it once per short rest. While cursed, you can add your proficiency to damage against the target, all attacks made crit on 19s as well as 20s, and you gain hp when the cursed creature dies.
You also become a Hex Warrior, giving you proficiency with medium armor and martial weapons. You can also use charisma as your attack modifier for one weapon per long rest, as long as it isn’t two-handed. Right now, that means you’re using hand crossbows.
One last benefit of being a warlock is Pact Magic, spells you can cast using Charisma. Grab Eldritch Blast for more shooting and True Strike for more careful shots, Expeditious Retreat for some extra speed, and Cause Fear to drain the luck of one poor sap for up to a minute, rendering them unable to move closer and giving them disadvantage on attacks while you’re in sight for the duration. Sure, making yourself luckier would technically be more directly in line with canon, but it’s a “six in one hand, half a dozen in another” sort of situation.
3. Warlock 2: Second level warlocks get Eldritch Invocations, extra ways to customize the Selling Your Soul Experience! You get two right now, but we’re saving one for The Obvious next level. Grab Thief of Five Fates for yet another way to ruin someone’s day. You can cast Bane once per long rest by using a warlock spell slot. This reduces all the saves and attack rolls of three creatures who failed their charisma saves by 1d4 for up to a minute. The DC on those saves, by the by, is 8 plus your proficiency bonus plus your charisma modifier. You can also cast Hex now, in case your enemies weren’t unlucky enough. This makes your attacks deal extra necrotic damage, they get disadvantage on ability checks with one ability, and you can move the effect to another creature if the first drops to 0 hp, which is nice considering it lasts an hour.
4. Warlock 3: Pact of the Blade time! This level lets you summon a magical pact weapon as an action. This weapon always has the benefits of being a Hex Warrior, and thanks to Improved Pact Weapon it can also be a ranged weapon. Specifically, it has to be a Light Crossbow now, because weapon requirements in D&D are obtuse and terrifying.
On a lighter note, you get second level spells now! You can speed up enough to create a Mirror Image of yourself, creating three copies of yourself on the same square you’re standing. If you’d take a hit, there’s a 75% chance a copy will get hit instead and get destroyed, leaving you with only two, and so on.
5. Warlock 4: Use your first Ability Score Improvement to bump up your Charisma for better... everything, really.
You can also cast Minor Illusion to leave afterimages further away from yourself, and Blur, which gives creatures attacking you disadvantage.
6. Rogue 2: Back in your other class, you learn how to make Cunning Actions, speeding up your Dash, Disengage, and Hide actions so they can fit in a bonus action instead. 
7. Rogue 3: It’s no surprise that you’re an Assassin. I mean, it’s your class, but it’s also your subclass. As an Assassin, you can Assassinate enemies that are surprised and/or slower than you are. You have advantage on creatures who haven’t taken a turn yet, and hits against surprised creatures are instant criticals. Speaking of advantage, you can use your Steady Aim as a bonus action to give your next attack advantage, at the cost of losing al your movement for the turn. Despite this, you’ll have plenty of ways to move in a pinch if you really have to.
Also, your sneak attack goes up to 2d6.
8. Fighter 1: Yes, it’s another 3-class build. Don’t worry though, this one’s just a splash. As a fighter, you get a fighting style- Archery will make your shots even more accurate than they were before. You can also use your Second Wind as a bonus action for a bit of healing. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding time for a breather, after all.
9. Fighter 2: Second level fighters can use an Action Surge once per short rest to add an extra action to a turn. Save up for a burst of gunfire, or cast Mirror Image and Blur at the same time to become almost invincible have fun with it!
10. Warlock 5: Speaking of doubling up on things, at fifth level warlocks get another Invocation. Thirsting Blade lets you attack twice per action. You can also move fast enough to Blink out of existence. On the end of each turn for a minute, you have a 50% chance to enter the ethereal plane until the start of your next turn.
11. Rogue 4: Use your next ASI to grab the Piercer feat, for +1 Dexterity, the ability to re-roll one die of piercing damage per turn, and an extra critical hit die when you shoot somebody. If you don’t plan on wearing medium armor, this will also increase your AC.
12. Rogue 5: Fifth level rogues gain an Uncanny Dodge, spending your reaction to halve the damage of a single attack. I’d think you wouldn’t get hit by this point, but nat 20s happen to everyone eventually. Also, your sneak attack is 3d6 now.
13. Rogue 6: Use your second round of Expertise to double down on Perception and Investigation. You’re a professional, you’ve got to get results.
14. Rogue 7: Seventh level rogues get Evasion, making you fast enough to outrun fireballs. If an effect makes you roll a dexterity save to halve damage, a failure makes you take half damage now, and a success completely negates it. Your sneak attack reaches its final form at 4d6.
15. Warlock 6: Sixth level hexlocks can make an Accursed Specter once per long rest out of humanoids you kill. They stick around until your next long rest. This is very not in character for you, but free help is free help.
To help with all that killing, you can also cast Spirit Shroud, adding extra damage to short-range combat, preventing healing, and slowing down nearby enemies.
16. Warlock 7: You can now burn spell slots to power gunshots thanks to Eldritch Smite, which adds a lot of force damage to a weapon attack. To help maneuver around the battlefield, you can also cast Dimension Door for a quick burst of speed.
17. Warlock 8: Use your last ASI to maximize your Charisma for stronger spells and weapons. You can also cast Shadow of Moil for that dramatic shadowy look you get at higher ascensions. It also works as yet another reason people really shouldn’t hit you.
18. Warlock 9: Ninth level warlocks max out their spell slots at fifth level, allowing you to cast Far Step for a longer speed-up session. While the spell lasts (it’s concentration, up to a minute) you can use your bonus action to teleport 60′. You also get the invocation Trickster’s Escape, which lets you cast Freedom of Movement for free once per long rest. While active, your latent timewarping prevents you from being slowed down by magical effects or difficult terrain. (At least that’s what it looks like from the outside. They don’t need to know you secretly spent two turns getting through those hedges.)
19. Warlock 10: Our final gift from Alaya is the Armor of Hexes. If you’re going to get hit by a hexcursed creature’s attack, you can use your reaction for a 50/50 chance of ignoring the attack completely.
You can also cast the cantrip Friends this level. You’re scary, this’ll make you scarier for a bit.
20. Warlock 11: Having sixth level spells on short rests would be busted, so instead of growing your spell slots warlocks get a Mystic Arcanum. This lets you cast one sixth level spell once per long rest, like those plebeians with spellbooks. Your spell is the Circle of Death, letting you go full on Reaper on a pretty large area, dealing 8d6 necrotic damage to every creature that fails a constitution save in a 60′ radius sphere. It’s not dexterity, purely because there’s that many bullets flying around.
Pros:
You are very, very good at critical hits. With a doubled chance of critical damage and guaranteed crits on surprised creatures, you’ll be rolling a lot of dice pretty often. Especially since you can take advantage of critical hits easily thanks to your smites and sneak attacks.
While you can dish out damage easily, you’re also great at avoiding damage entirely, with plenty of spells that make you harder to hit, teleportation to get out of tricky spots, and multiple ways to dodge attacks even if they’re critical hits. Your mobility also makes it a lot harder to escape from you.
Maxed out charisma, the archery fighting style, and free advantage from Steady Aim means even after the fight starts you can still deal consistent damage over long periods of time. Your shots are going to land more often than not, and they land pretty hard.
Cons:
While you can deal damage over time, your kit is definitely geared more towards short bursts, because most of your skills are on a strict cooldown, with one or two uses per short rest. This is especially true of your spell slots. Warlocks eat up spells fast, especially if you’re using them for offense and defense.
Your low wisdom means you’re going to be fooled by illusions and charmed pretty easily. As a precaution, it might be best to use up your burst damage skills as soon as possible. You really don’t want to have to turn 9d8 + 4d6 + 12 damage on your party members.
Your HP isn’t that high, barely scraping above 100 at higher levels. While you have a lot of ways to make that last a lot longer than you’d think, there’s always the chance your DM’s getting sick of you surviving everything and will just throw someone with Power Word Kill your way.

Idk if you’ve ever talked about it before, but how does Mammon speak in Japanese? In the translation, he speaks kinda rough and casual (maybe a bit of a southern USA flair? he uses y’all once or twice iirc) Does he have a particular accent or dialect in the OG text?
Oh, Mammon might be hard to break down, but I’ll see what I can do!
So I don’t think Mammon has any particular accent, per se?  I think he’s just very informal.
From what I’ve noticed, Mammon’s speech is characterized by informal phrasing and some phonetic changes.  I don’t think it goes into any actual ヤンキー (”delinquent youth”) territory, but I might be wrong as I don’t have any experience with that subculture.  Regardless, it’s pretty rough, and very informal.
The following example sentences all come from the phone call where he cancels your plans (I think it’s intimacy 25?), his home screen dialogue, and the current Halloween event.
And this time more than any before, Japanese is not my first language and I have never lived in Japan, so if you find anything incorrect about the content below, please let me know so I can fix it.
---Informal Phrasing---
Japanese has lot of different ways to say the same thing with varying levels of politeness.  Mammon tends to use (one of) the most direct ways of saying things.
It’s important to remember though that a lot of these “direct” things are characteristic of male speech in general, and I won’t go over those.  Mammon says やつ (guy, basically) to refer to others sometimes, but so does Lucifer.  Likewise, it’d be weirder if he didn’t use the dictionary verb form most of the time.  There might be some that I describe even though they aren’t particularly unique to Mammon, because I’m not an expert on masc-coded Japanese.
悪い!! (warui)
(Phone call) This literally means “bad,” but in this context it’s “my bad” or “sorry.”  It’s a rough way to say it, rougher than ごめん (gomen), which I know Levi says off the top of my head, and すまない (sumanai), which I know Lucifer says.
If you need to apologize in Japanese, I think it’s best to stick to すみません (sumimasen) or ごめなさい (gomenasai) to avoid accidentally coming off as too rude or too stiff.
許せ!! (yuruse)
(Phone call) This means “forgive me,” but like.  As a command.  A pretty demanding one at that.  An example you’ve probably heard is when a man yells やめろ (yamero) to make someone stop what they’re doing.
その時は何があっても予定を空けろよ! (sono ji wa nani ga attemo yotei wo akero yo)
(Phone call) Here’s the imperative again.  空けろ (akero) is the command form of 空ける (akeru), which here means to clear your schedule (予定 is schedule).  The よ (yo) at the end softens the command a little. The sentence means “At that time, no matter what you’ve got going on, clear your schedule!”
A softer way to say it would be 空けて (akete), and even softer would be 空けてください (akete kudasai).  I’m pretty sure Mammon isn’t the only character to use the imperative like this, but he’s certainly uses it a lot.
館中の掃除を言いつけてきやがって…… (yakatachuu no souji wo ii tsuketeki yagatte)
(Phone call) You can tag やがる (yagaru) onto a verb to show your contempt for someone’s actions.  You hate that they did something.  Like most of these, it’s pretty harsh. The sentence means “He had the nerve to order me to clean the house,” but with the strength of やがって, “He fucking ordered me to” might be closer in attitude.
近いうちにまた誘ってやるから (chikaiuchi ni mata sasotte yaru kara)
(Phone call) If you read the Levi post, you might remember that やる (yaru) is a more colloquial way to say “to do” than する (suru).  It’s also a more colloquial way to say あげる (ageru), “to give.”  It used to imply that the recipient was on equal or lower standing with you, but I don’t think that’s really the case anymore except for how it’s not really a polite phrasing.  Attached to a verb, both あげる and やる imply a favor is being done. This means “I’ll invite you out again soon before long, so”
---Phonetic Shift---
In general, the most common phoneme shifts in Mammon’s lines are cutting the middle and monophthongization.  Cutting the middle is a term I’m making up for the sake of this post and is exactly what it sounds like: lengthening the first syllable in place of the next ones.  Monophthongization is when a vowel made of two sounds (diphthong) is pronounced as one sound (monophthong).  In the case of rough Japanese that we’re working with, that usually means <ai> and <oi> turning into <ee>.
そのなんつーか…… (Sono nan tsuuka......)
(Phone call) つーか (tsuuka) is short for というか (to iu ka).  You can see how “to iu” assimilates to “tsuu,” especially if you say というか a few times fast. なんつーか/何というか means “How should I put it?”
だぁっ!わーったよ!! (Da-!  waatta yo)
(A Devildom Halloween, 1-3) わーった (waatta) is from わかった (wakatta), which means “I get it.”
そりゃ傑作だぜ! (sorya kessaku daze)
(A Devildom Halloween, 2-16) そりゃ (sorya) is a shortened それは (sore wa), “that is.”  Also, I’m not sure where else to put this, but ぜ (ze) is a very strong assertive particle that I don’t think many people actually use anymore irl. The line is “That’s a great joke!”
すっげースピードで鞭とんでくるんだけど! (suggee supiido de muchi tondekurun dakedo)
(Phone call) Here we start the examples of monophthongization, which is probably the worst word you’ve had to read in a while but I promise is the easiest phonetic concept to understand here.
すっげー (suggee) comes from すっごい (suggoi), which means either amazing or terrible, depending on the context.  Like I said before, <oi> often simplifies to <ee> (the second “e” is written either ー or え). The line means “The whip’s gonna come down real fast.”  すっげー is emphasizing the speed.
By the way, やばい (yabai) also means amazing or terrible, based on context, and can be changed to やべー (yabee) in the same way.  Mammon’s said that before too, but I don’t think it’s in my example pool.
あー…金降ってこねえかなー (Aa... kane futte konee kanaa)
(Home screen) This time, the negative こない (konai) turns into こねえ (konee), with the same <ai> --> <ee> shift.  This time, it got written as ねえ instead of ねー. This is his “wish it’d rain money” line, and the translation is basically the same.
うるせぇ…… (urusee)
(A Devildom Halloween, 2-13) うるせぇ is from うるさい (urusai), which means “shut up.”  This time the second え is the smaller ぇ!
おっせえよ。俺を待たすんじゃねえ (ossee yo.  ore wo matasunjanee)
(Home screen) We’ve got two here, with 遅い (osoi), late, turning into おっせえ (ossee), and 待たすな (matasu na) becoming 待たすんじゃねえ (matasunjanee).  Putting んじゃない where a な would normally be makes it a rough-sounding command.  And then the ない turned into ねえ like tends to happen with Mammon.
The line is “You’re late.  Don’t keep me waiting.”
気安くさわんな! (kiyasuku sawanna)
(Home screen, UR+ animation) This could possibly be in the first section too, idk, but.  The general way to say “don’t touch me” is 触らないで (sawaranaide), and a more casual way to say it is 触るな (sawaru na).  Mammon takes it a step further, and drops the る to say さわんな (sawanna).  Levi uses the 触るな style, so I assume Mammon’s style is pretty noticeably informal.
他人の為に何か買ってヤンなきゃならねぇんだ! (tanin no tame ni nanka katte yannakya naraneenda)
(A Devildom Halloween, 2-13) やらなきゃならない (yaranakya naranai), is already a pretty casual way to say “have to.”  Mammon’s version uses the same んな as the last line, turning やらなきゃ into ヤンなきゃ (yannakya).  Also notice the switch from hiragana to katakana, which is often used to convey the conversational tone.  And then ない once again becomes ねぇ! The line is “Why do I have to buy something for someone else?!”
And last but not least... そうだ、殿下。 言い忘れてた (souda, denka. ii wasureteta)
(A Devildom Halloween, 2-23) This line means, “that’s right, your highness.  We forgot to say.” Why is this one last?  Mammon says this line to Diavolo.  From what I’ve seen it’s about the same level of politeness that Lucifer uses when talking to Diavolo.

So this isn’t organized at all, but I hope this gave you an idea of how Mammon’s idiolect ended up giving him a distinct one in the localization!
This is always a hot topic with Mammon’s portrayal as a POC character, so I need to say that I don’t know enough about Japanese subculture and language codes to say anything for sure about whether this makes him sound “uneducated.”  Impolite, definitely, but “uneducated,” I don’t know.  Regardless, the connotation definitely exists in how he’s written in English.  And with that I’d like to remind everyone that your idiolect says nothing about your intelligence.  Don’t judge a person’s worth by how many big words they use.

okay so dimensions r a thing tumblr compresses photos like hella so i do all my still img aesthetics 900x900 is you’re trying to do this for say insta i would actually recommend jumping up to 1080x1080. pixels, obviously. idk if i have to clarify that.

these r the rest of my settings i personally do not think they matter my resolution stays at 72 the only thing i’ve detected this affecting is font size. (side note notice how this pic looks all fuzzy? that’s bc it’s a ss with a boatload of pixels. and if there’s one thing tumblr hates. it’s pixels. and then it’s users. but who’s counting? tumblr is. i recommend keeping ur still images 900x900♥)
step two is collecting ur images i personally use pinterest for these bc quite frankly it’s really nice & easy to find these types of photos esp if you’re looking for a canon character bc if you type in [character name] aesthetic you’ll get stuff if you don’t quite frankly even just type in aesthetic you can scroll until you find an image you like click on that and go through like images underneath it and keep burning thru. like u probably know how to work pinterest. but i am being thorough and covering my bases. searching [color] aesthetic is also nice or even searching a character that isn’t the character you’re doing this for but who’s kind of similar that also works. i recommend esp for charmed bc their pinterest gets bogged down with screencaps and then like. charms like jewelry searching “charmed aesthetic” or “phoebe halliwell aesthetic” really just doesn’t cut it so what i’d recommend is instead of going through pins, go through boards.

bc like. big difference. other pro tips if you see a board you like, go to the person’s profile and check out their other boards bc odds are you’ll find more you like. another protip if you’re specifically doing ocs typing in oc aesthetic will get you a lot even going to the boards on that as well. yields.
so. you’ve gathered ur images. u need five. open em. i’m making an aesthetic 4 myself which you’ve probably already guessed from the fact i’m putting the finished piece at the top, but it’s not ready yet so it’s still a surprise for me. 
cropping. if ur doing a 900x900, use these setting exactly. 1080x1080 use 1080/2 x 1080/3. i’m not doing the math 4 u ♥

but them in ur document. document? psd? ur thing ♥ place them places. u do not have to commit now. leave one middle one blank. it does not matter which one. i personally like to alternate my text pieces if i’m doing a long post like what i did on my ncwotng set. some people keep them all on the same side. this lowkey bugs me i feel like it throws off the Balance but i imagine some people like The Consistency. i don’t. but w/e. it’s up to u as this is gonna be ur set. also like. as you’ve cropped these to x/2,x/3 settings they should fit nice like puzzle pieces : )

the next step i personally like doing is creating by text box with The Color™ do this bc simply duplicating one of ur images, shoving it in the empty slot, and converting into a sharp object. edit contents.

now. obvi i selected these images w a color scheme in mid. i recommend u do the same. even if it’s just vague. they don’t all have 2 fit. this is my example of my sheridan piece b4 or after. tweaking is possible. layers w masks r ur friend. i can talk about them more if need be.

the text i used was times new roman all caps 40pt font 0 spacing for the title and times new roman 14pt font 0 spacing italics for the subheading. here’s my dency b4 and after for comparison

next step is after you have your text in alright, shove everything into groups. mode on “normal”

then you can start editing. the groups let you edit things like lighting and color without touching any of the layers below it 👍
i’m not gonna do a Major coloring tutorial, for lighting i’ll usually tinker with exposure, levels, sometimes brightness/contrast. for colors, color balance + hue/saturation. i rarely touch anything else.
i’ll bring u along 4 the coloring of this one bc i’m gonna add a layer mask.

Footsteps echoed down the dim hallway. Shuichi's footsteps, to be exact. Careful, fearful steps, like each step could be his last, because it quite literally could be.
He thought about what he knew to try and put the pieces together. Rantaro, Ryoma, and Kokichi all went into the third floor of the school- er, the Sanzu Garden together to find their afternoon locks, and the weapons maker and Kokichi made it back to the dorms. According to them, Rantaro had fallen into a pit trap, and they hadn't been able to find him since. Now, after everyone else had their afternoon challenge completed, Shuichi and Kaito had been chosen to try to find Rantaro.
So far, they'd found nothing but more traps- and one of Rantaro's locks, completed. At least he'd be safe for the night, wherever he was.
Walking along the hallway, Shuichi heard a click from inside the walls, and- a dart flew by him, narrowly missing his cheek.
If I had been just a bit off, he thought, that would've gone right through my eye. And Monokuma said the traps wouldn't kill us. That statement seemed less true by the day.
Luckily, that had been one of the smaller traps, as they ranged from small projectiles being thrown to walls crashing against each other with a person in between. He looked around at the walls of the hallway, searching for signs of human interaction, when something caught his eye.
A red spot on the floor.
Many red spots, actually, making a clear trail down the hall and around a corner.
There were no traps around here that he knew of that could make a hole big enough to cause that much blood loss. They'd all either give you small cuts or kill you in a second. And Rantaro kept first aid supplies on him, so the violinist doubted he'd go that long without stopping the blood.
Still, Kokichi had told him Rantaro's was the only lock on the third floor, and the way he was coming from was closest to the stairway, so…
Whoever came this way did it on purpose. And it wasn't to get their afternoon locks.
Shuichi ran through the hall and followed the red trail around the corner, to where it abruptly stopped over a tile of the floor. There were no traps besides the dart in that hall. Where had this person gotten their injury, then?
He slowed his pace, thinking more logically now. I should go back and get Kaito, that way we'll keep each other in sight in case this trail leads somewhere bad.
But he could be anywhere on this floor by now, and I don't know if that trap'll activate again because it's right at my eye level, and was that liquid in the dart, now that I'm thinking more in detail about it? Could it be a tranquilizer dart, or a poisonous one? And- okay, pull yourself together, Shuichi.
Out of sheer stubbornness, he decided to keep following the trail by himself, and walked slowly along the blood trail until he reached the tile it stopped at.
Hmm.
Maybe whoever was injured had stopped here to treat their wounds a bit if the pain had gotten to be too much. Or they could've turned around and gone back. Kokichi did say he knew Rantaro's lock was the only one on the floor. Maybe he had done some exploring and gotten hurt on accident, or maybe-
His thoughts were cut off by a sudden lack of ground beneath his feet.
Or maybe the injured person had fallen into a pitfall trap right at this very spot.
He screamed in surprise at the fall and heard a voice from above him, far away, and loud footsteps. "SHUICHI?!"
Yeah, he should've told Kaito.
The panels to the trap shut, leaving him to fall in total darkness and silence.
It was both peaceful and stressful, the feeling of not knowing where you'd land or when, nothing but darkness and your own thoughts and the stomach-churning sensation Shuichi found out was easy to get used to, and-
BANG.
A-
A gunshot?
From somewhere below him, there was a gunshot. And now, light began to clear up the darkness, revealing cold metal walls around him. There were more gunshots, louder, more frequent. What kind of place does this lead to?
With a thump, he landed on a thick mattress, oddly out of place in the room he landed in, which was made of blank white concrete walls covered in chipping, moldy wallpaper. He saw no guns nor sparks or bullets flying, but the sound of gunshots was everywhere, exploding in his eardrums so that he had to block his ears if he wanted to concentrate. Cardboard boxes sat in varying stacks and piles in the corners of the room. There were no holes in them, Shuichi saw, so could there just not be- he walked out into the middle of the room. Sure enough, the sound was just coming from a hidden speaker, and there were no real guns.
Now, how to get out of this room?
The cardboard boxes were most likely there for a reason. They could be traps, but they could also serve as a way to escape. He decided to investigate them first.
Picking a random box off a stack in the nearest corner, he noticed something. Something green. And curled into a tight ball, letting out whimpers that could barely be heard over the noise from the speakers.
It was- He was Rantaro. Much, much different than how he acted around the others, but Rantaro nonetheless. What was going on?
"Some rooms will lock you in and whisper your worst fears to you."
This was one of those rooms, wasn't it? Designed for Rantaro, for sure. And it couldn't just be the gunshot noise that triggered him so badly, since he'd talked so much about his feats in war before. The room probably had something to do with his fear. No wonder he was hiding in a fort of small brown boxes.
"Rantaro!"
Nothing. His voice was still quieter than the background noise. 
"RANTARO!!"
The medic seemed paralyzed for a second, then slowly turned his head towards Shuichi.
"You have to snap out of this, Ra-"
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! GET DOWN, OR YOU COULD GET SHOT!"
Tears were streaming down his usually confident face as he said this.
"No! You have to listen, Rantaro!" The violinist crouched down next to the stack of boxes.
"None of what you're thinking about is real. There are speakers in the walls, they're making the sound of gunshots. I don't know what this place is, but as far as I know it can't hurt you. You're safe, alright? You're safe."
Rantaro was still hyperventilating.
"Hey, hey. Calm down. Everyone's waiting back at the dorms. We've been really worried for you. That's how I ended up here, by falling through the same trap you did."
The shots in the background became softer and softer as Shuichi explained their situation casually, until they eventually faded away into nothingness. Apparently the mastermind was done with this twisted torture.
A door opened at the opposite side of the room.
The curled-up figure had slowed his breathing some, but was still panicking.
"...It. It stopped."
"Huh. It did."
And it took quite a lot of convincing, but, not very long after the noises stopped, the two walked to the door, Rantaro holding the other's hand tightly for security.
"Oh, right! Have you tended to your wound yet? If not, we ought to fix that now before getting back to the others."
"...Wound? What wound?" Rantaro asked, checking his body for any wound he could've forgotten about.
"Well, there was a trail of blood leading to the door here, so I thought it might be your-"
Wait.
Wait, wait, wait.
If Rantaro really had been taken by surprise and fallen here, he wouldn't have had time to fix himself up until he finished falling, which would mean-
But there wasn't any blood on the mattress or the floor at all.
"I followed the trail too. Thought I could find someone suspicious, since no other locks were on that floor and the trail led away from my lock."
"Uh, wait… then if it wasn't you or Kokichi… whose blood trail was that?"

psst share your outer banks coloring secrets
ah, yes, one of the worst shows to color lmaoooo. i'll try to give some tips but im sure as anyone who has tried to color this show knows each scene is diff and has it's own flavor of awful yellow/green/red shading.
some tips on how to go from this to this......

............under the cut! (warning v long and idk if i'm the best at explaining things lmao)
so firstly, i use this psd i made ages ago for everything (alecbaenes was my url many moons ago i just am too lazy to change and reupload). usually i will go into each individual layer of that psd and see how they work with the scene, and will change the opacity or turn off the layer depending on what looks best. generally for obx, i will lower the opacity on the gradient map layer, as well as certain vibrancy/curves/levels layers, ones that make the gif brighter and more vibrant. i will usually bring back some vibrancy and brightness later but when im first getting the base coloring, some layers just heighten the yellow/red and we need to kinda bring that down before we make adjustments to get aspects like skin color more accurate.
so, just with my psd/adjustments made to the psd layers, the gif may looks something like this: (going to use this gif bc i made it more recently so i remember some of the stuff i did better, and is the most accurate to my current process--plus it sucks to color lmao)

ususally still way to red/yellow for my liking, both for the skin tones and to be able to manipulate the colors for a vibrant coloring! so the next step is to get colors as close to how they are normally. warning, you will have to make 345435354 adjustment layers and just keep tweaking and tweaking... and tweaking. sometimes i will have like 20+ adjustment layers at the end of the process. i usually put all my adjustments under my psd--i also always add a vibrance and brightness layer above. sometimes it helps to do final tweaks above the psd if you just cant get anything right bc of course the psd will change how colors normally look.
anyways, usually my base fixes will be some sort of combination of curves, levels, color balance, and selective color. so like, if the gif needs more depth/darkness, or is way too bright, i will bring the curve down or up respectively. levels, and also increasing the black selective color layer will also add depth. i will also use auto curve sometimes! the first image i have below i circled some of the extra tools i may use--auto for auto curves, the top black eyedropper you select the darker points in your gif and it will adjust based on that, the bottom one for the lightest--if i use those i will either use the black one only, or the black and then the white. the other three are examples of how my curve layers may look--i already have S curves in my psd, so when i do extra curve adjustments, it's just one single point, and i don't move it that much. same with levels, i dont make a super dramatic change, when it's under the psd it's enough to just move a bit to make a big difference. sometimes i'll also bring these layers to a lower opacity.

generally my first step is color balance though, especially if the gif seems mostly fine lighting wise. for obx, i usually shift it towards cyan and blue to cancel out the red tones. magenta and green depends, if its more green i may move towards magenta and vice versa, but usually i dont shift it that dramatically and often leave it alone. i will usually move the bottom bar towards blue, to soften the yellow tones. color balance helps shift the overall colors of the gif. notice that it's on mid tones in these pictures:

as you can see, i shift the cyan/red one more dramatically than the yellow/blue, and with magenta and green i usually just move it 1-3 points over. in the last one, i actually shifted towards red above my psd layer, because after all my adjustments i lost some of the red/warmth, so i brought back in red.
with color balance/curves, the gif may looks something like this

less of a completely red/yellow filter over everything! but still not great, their skin is too red, and overall still not the best base to try colorings. so next up is selective color, which can really help you fine tune things, but because of that.... SUUUUPER tedious. i will have 3495874 selective color layers and sometimes like 5 of them will be half canceling each other out just to get something okay. but this is a hobby i've chosen so we must suffer LKRGJRG. generally, my realm revolves around red, yellow, and at times magenta or neutral. if you think back to how we fixed some of the colors with color balance, kind of a similar principle, just with the individual colors. and lots of experimenting. so with color balance i would cancel out reds by making them more cyan--on the red selective color, im also gonna turn up the cyan. for yellow, i'm gonna make it more magenta, to make the yellow tones warmer. i will tweak the other tones too, just kinda experiment to see how changing it affects the gif, and then soon you will kind of intuitively know how to change the values based on whats going on in the gif lighting. magenta selective color helps for red values that are more pink, so make them more red or yellow based on what you need--i don't use this as much, hence i didnt have an example in the crop of psds i opened, but it's helpful sometimes. with neutral selective color, it usually affects the whole gif, so again, only minimal changes--usually i will bring the black levels down if it got to bright, or add just a tinge or yellow or cyan or whatever i need. here's some pics to show examples of what mine looked like for this gif:

there were many more, but i just chose a few. the '1' and '2' i wrote to demonstrate that these layers were sequential, how they balance each other, and how selective color can be a tedious balancing act-- the second example it's like basically the opposite but it balances it out. also, if you have two characters with different skin tones, or the lighting is different for them, etc, you can use layer masks to erase certain adjustments so it only affects one of the subjects. some of these tweaks will be inbetween me transforming the gif to be colorful, and noticing how the colors interact, etc. so between this i was also making it colorful and it's not exactly the finished product at this stage: but this is kind of what the gif would look like after all the adjustments just to get it looking... normalish:

not totally perfect but MUCH better, and also will look a little different when surrounded by the colors i want to turn it into. i have some stuff about how i color in this tag, i can do a lil other tutorial or smth if needed but bc i have limited photo space on the ask and already wrote so much i wont get super into it here. but for shows like obx, it helps to work with a group of colors that will work with the show--yellows/oranges are easier bc of all the yellow already found in the show. pinks can be harder because there is so much yellow in the show, but doable. greens are good because of all the green in the show, and thus blues are good because its easy to go from green to blue with selective color and stuff. thus, purples are good too because its easy to go from blue to purple! stuff like that makes it easier. some work with selective color, hue and saturation, gradients, and voila!

you can see how maybe some of the issues like it being still a little too yellow/greeny toned balances out with the surrounding colors.
also, a big part of it is just practice! i've been giffing for yeaaaaaars and with media that has just the most god awful lighting so i've gotten good at understanding what to do and sometimes i'm just on auto pilot.
hopefully that helped, i know it was long winded and it can be hard to explain/understand photoshop. if y'all want some more in depth explanation about a part of the process i can try, or with other examples!

To the Beat - Headcanons
(a/n) right, so here are just some headcanons/vague ideas of how i imagined the band play their songs. Either at the specific concert or in general in the future once they had grown more comfortable on stage and a bigger fanbase etc.
Also, I have no idea if this makes sense but I had all these ideas in my head that i needed to get out and on to “paper”, so i thought then why not just share it :)

headcanons below cut
MR BRIGHTSIDE (The Killers)
So, Harrison starts playing on the guitar, and then the drums follow after a few beats just like in the original. Harrison sings the first verse, but Harry comes in with the harmonies in the lines like “gotta gotta be down” and “How did I end up like this?” 
Then I feel like there could be more harmonies in the pre-chorus, but the chorus itself is sung by Haz, with Tom and Harry doing like matching back up vocals (ooohs and stuff like that). 
The second verse is sung by Harry, with harmonies done by Haz. Then at the line with the pre-echo of “(it was only a kiss) It was only a kiss” Tom is the one to say it. - 
(sidenote, i feel, like if they performed it more, he would get more confidence into and would start improvising shit that would totally not match the song and harry would either go along with it or just ignore him. Either way, funny shit.) 
Harry would sing most of the second pre-chorus, but the other two would join him in the last line “and taking control”. Then Harrison sings the final chorus. And Tom would do the echoes the song ends on (the repeated “I never”s) 
THE INVISIBLE MAN (Queen)
Harrison sings most of it, but like, really close to the microphone, so he doesn’t have to sing it very loudly. 
You just know Harry is having the time of his life during this song with the bass. Especially after the intro and there is that part of just bass and drums. Tom and Harry love it. 
(also Tom does the adlibs through the verses and he shouts something randoms, but not through the mic, just into the void lol we love our adlib king) 
Then during the chorus, Tom and Harry whisper-sing “I’m the invisible man” 
So the bridge is a bit more aggressive so Harry would sing that, headbanging like crazy when given the time. 
The guitar solo… honestly, I don’t know what to say about that without becoming a puddle. K byeee. 
Basically they would go all out and be super extra, making Freddie Mercuy proud. 
YOU OUGHTA KNOW (Alanis Morissette) 
So, this is Tom’s song. It starts off with a snare drum and he sings softly, but angry just like Alanis. And the rhythm just fits considering he would also have to drum. Then the second part of the verse, he gets louder. 
Haz and Harry do the pre-chorus in harmonies, with Tom shouting out the No in “To be open wide, no” Then the last two lines are for Harry (“ ‘til you died, until you died, but you’re still alive!”) and he shouts them out to transition into the chorus which he also sings. 
Then then the second verse is also sung by Tom. It basically follows the same formula as the first part. 
After the second chorus, there is that kind of echo which Haz sings. The bridge is Tom’s part again. Harry sings the last two choruses again but then the last “you, you, you oughta know” is sung much softer for the DRAMA. 
ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL (Jet)
The cough. You know that one of them would do the cough. But never at the right moment though. 
This is another song that Harry loves to perform because its super bass… based, so he grabs at at the attention and gets super extra at the intro. Tom would just be vibing at the beat really. Then the guitar riff comes in and everyone just *swoons* and Harry comes in with the WhOO!
Harrison also goes all out, playing to the audience, but then for every line he would lean into the microphone, really close and then jump off it to the back, just to come back in at the next line. I don’t know how to describe but.. That. And he would change his tone where it fits so in the second line of “say you look so fine, that I really wanna make you mine” he would end it all husky probably. And he would most definitely try to spot someone hot in the crowd and sing the next line to them with a wink (Now you don't need the money/When you look like that, do ya honey?) and his voice would go all deep and oof yeah. Just sex all around for him, really.
Harry would finish off the pre-chorus and shout his way through the chorus like the energetic weirdo that he is (how he still has a voice at the end of it all is large mystery). 
Then the drum stops for Tom to catch a moment, not that he really needs it, and he says the “Are you gonna be my girl?” and then I die basically. 
And then after the second chorus, the guitar starts and Tom stands up to clap, letting the audience to follow. And (hopefully) they continue with it through the rest of the song.  
BREAK MY HEART (Dua Lipa, cover version of HEY LIFE)
The song would either start with a bass actually or a guitar that is a bit higher than the one in the playlist i set. They wouldn’t play it as metal-y. Harrison sings, holding on to that mic Harry is living his life with the bass. 
Then they all sing the first half of the pre-chorus in harmonies and it sounds amazing. The other half is for Harrison. 
The first few lines of the chorus “I would've stayed at home/'Cause I was doin' better alone/But when you said, "Hello"/I know that was the end of it all” is like an acapella monotone singing… I don’t know music terms okay, deal it with <3 but then they repeat it with the instruments and harmonies. 
It all kind of repeats itself in the same formula, I think. Then there’s a bit of a solo at the end of the second??? chorus so that would go to Harrison. And the bridge they’d sing together again. And there are some like background lines?? That would probably be Harry :) why did I make him the loud chaotic one?? I have no idea but try and tell me that I’m wrong. He’d go through like 6 bottles of water cause ya boy’s gotta STAY HYDRATED
MISS YOU (The Rolling Stones) 
Right, so like in the fic, audience participation in the best way possible. They teach the crowd what to sing and how to sing it. So the ooohs and yadda yadda at the intro and through the rest of the song.  It has a fucking great beat too so everyone is just VIBING to it and it’s a party. Harrison is doing his best with his cursive™ singing lol. No one really understands what he��s saying but we’re here for it. Then Harry signs towards the crowd to sing and its loud and amazing and the connection!! 
Then later on tom and harry to the back up vocals again and it just sounds like two little angels. 
There is a part where it’s kind of slam poetry lol, about walking in central park or something (idk the song that well oops) anyway, that part is Harry’s. 
The saxophone solos are obviously changed into a guitar solo, or a bass, or drum, whichever guy is quicker each show. Then the crowd joins in again cause they can’t help it and that little ooooh/aaaah will be stuck in everyones head for the rest of the week (just like it happened to me after i went to the Rolling Stones concert, people were still singing it in the train on the way home and that is exactly the vibe we are going for here) 
WILDFLOWER (5 Seconds of Summer)
So it’s been established that these boys do nothing but exude sex through their entire performance and this song is no exception. They start of very sweet with the wild-wildflower but from their, straight into the sin bin. Harrison is singing
 (ngl i did base him a lot on Luke Hemmings in this fic so I just had to put in a 5SOS song- even though calum sings it but do not ruin this for me OKAY) 
In the meantime, Tom is clapping along, getting the crowd to do it, though he has to make sure the people actually stay in rhythm so it doesn’t fuck up the song. Then in the pre-chorus its Tom and Harry as back-up, still for Harrison to take the lead. Until the last sentence where its Harry coming in with the “I know where tonight is going!” 
But here’s the thing. The song goes “You're the only one who makes me- Every time we-” and then there’s the added “Tell you what I like” which Tom is SUPPOSED to sing, but as we have established, he’s a little shit and he loves to mess around, so he would shout out weird stuff out when he got the chance, but if he couldn’t think of it, then he’d at least take it to the stage to finish Haz’ sentence. So when he sings “You’re the only one who makes me-” Tom nicely finished is it and shouts “HARD” 
Also I think Harry would be bopping around with his bass to the drum, cause how can you not.  
SEVEN NATION ARMY (The White Stripes)
Right so here is Harrison, aka our cursive singing king, thriving. The first part of the song doesn’t even use guitar so he’s just at the microphone chilling, most definitely brushing his fingers through his hair, maybe rolling up the sleeves of his shirt. Does he need to do it? No, but who minds it? Exactly, nobody. 
But then when the guitar does finally start he is oFFFFF. Putting so much into it. 
Tom also most definitely goes far and beyond drumming to this. it’s a simple beat but he just drums with all his body. At the begining of every verse, where its just the bass drum, you can see him step on that fucking pedal. 
and then he adds on the other drum (idk terms, let me be) but he moves his head to each beat and he hits it fucking hard okay, so MUSCLE uhum uhum, yeah. 
And there’s another classic bassline in here so Harry is thriving like any time he gets to shine <3 
CALIFORNICATION (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
So this was a slower song to kind of level all the songs that had been super energetic. 
It’s simply the moment where all of them can relax a bit. maybe some of the audience will turn on their flashlights. Not that the song really needs that, but its fun, so why not. 
Harrison is at it again with the cursive, tho not as much here. He also plays around at the end of the verses, lengthening the notes and stuff. idk, making it fancy
They put in more distinct harmonies at the chorus “Dream of Californication” 
then there are the back up Ooooh’s in the other verses. love those. 
they might cut the song short, stopping before the last verse, just where its the soft guitar plating and they faded out and its time for another break :)
CHELSEA DAGGER (The Fratellis)
So they don’t actually play this song. It was something that came accidentally. They probably don’t even know the name of the song. But its just one of those things that everyone kinda knows. So during a break one of the 3 is fucking around on their instrument and the other two join in, still clueless, and suddenly its the crowd that does the dudududud’s and there ya go, Chelsea Dagger. Just a little quickie to get everyone pumped up again after a slower song. 
SEX ON FIRE (Kings of Leon)
Harrison’s cursive singing strikes again, but at this point we’re all living for it. It’s also the song where he’s a bit louder and gets up there together with Harry’s voice lol.
Then Tom sings the chorus, since this is all my self indulgence and I want him to sing the words “your sex is on fire” over and over again. sue me. 
But like, he tenses up when he sings, getting it in that right emotional range, and he’s still drumming and it’s all very very hot. 
maybe the light technicians set the lights on red or orange <3 
MISS ALISSA (Eagles of Death Metal) 
Here’s my idea: they all had a veto on picking one song each for the set list and the rest had to be voted on together 
(Harrison’s would be ---- and Tom’s would be You Oughta Know, cause he angsty like that sometimes). 
Harry picked this song simply because its fucking fast and it was a struggle for the other two lol. It’s basically just drums and guitar so Harry is singing and clapping, with his bass on his back, while tom is basically dying from this repeated beat, playing it nonstop for 3 minutes straight while his fucking brother is jumping around on stage.
 And the ‘you aint dancing’ at the end is definitely directed at Tom.
To which Tom would nicely respond with flipping his brother off :) 
RUBY (Kaiser Chief) 
My sweet baby angels they start with the tadata’s together 
And Harry sings the verse and the chorus, with Tom and Haz doing the back up vocals. 
Cause he sings the most of this song, he sometimes slacks with the bass, just letting it go all together, to hold on to the mic (or taking it with him and dancing around the stage during the chorus) 
and during the bridge he could very well bend down to sing to the audience directly 
so the people *swoon* once again 
and he would be deep in eye contact with someone for that bridge, just for the chorus to start again and he’d jump up and be all bouncy again. we love variety
in short, this concert would not be good for my heart 
STAR GIRL (McFly)
The only real reason why the chose this song is cause they’re 12 year old boys and the lines of the second verse made them laugh (there’s nothing on Earth that can save us, when i fell in love with Uranus) and i mean, who can blame them. But its also just a really fun song that the crowd can easily join into as well - gotta love the whoohoo-oooo’s . 
And speaking of, after the bridge and trumpet/in this case guitar solo, there’s a few counts of silence. You can bet that the audience misses it by like half a beat which the boys enjoy immensely. Sometimes they would even go out of their way to make the pause even longer to mess with people. 
But basically, the do end up loving this song, especially Tom and Harry. they have possibly argued about who sings which part, so they end up just switching through shows (tho Harry gets to do the bridge, since he has the loudest voice<3)
COME TOGETHER (The Beatles)
They specifically chose this song to finish the show off with. 
cause it really brings everyone together. 
they might sing it a bit differently though, maybe more like Aerosmith
(they tried Gary Clark Jr.’s version but they felt like they couldn’t do it as big as he did it)  
they definitely fool the crowd to when to sing Come Together or not, very anticlamactic and all but it won’t make anyone love them any less. 
but once they do sing it, Chilssss 
and they do each a verse, so first Harrison, then Harry, and finally Tom. and they all finish their own verse very dramatic in their own little ways. 
Harrison barely understandable, but very dramatic 
Harry basically screams it out 
and Tom is just SEX™ 
and then they finish the show off with extended solo’s and I cry again

I don’t know if this extensive reading has helped but I FEEL like it has helped lol. When I started 小王子 how long was it taking a chapter? Just under 5 minutes per page right?
Well I know I got faster than that. Today my Internet was down so while waiting for things to restart and load and stuff I read like 5 chapters of the book. I read them out loud (just a handful of words I didn’t know how to say out loud). I was reading at slow but steady speaking speed so that’s still faster than 5 minutes a page. Ok I just timed myself to test it and I am taking 2 minutes to read a page, and I would guess 3 minutes if I slowed down to consider a bit more on the sayings/less familiar hanzi. That’s better then the 4.5-5 minutes I started at! So I must’ve picked up some words from this book. So I would say... yes a little extensive reading seems to be helping reading speed. Also! I have 16 pages to go! This story is so short. It is sweet and odd and so human though maybe that is why it’s remained loved like Alice in wonderland. (Fun fact I also read 2 chapters of Alice in wonderland in French this week and it is just as bizarre to me as when I watched the movie as a kid, But I do think in book form if I were 6-9 I would’ve related more since Alice’s POV in the story is pretty relatable... and when I was a kid and watched the movie I just did Not relate aha).
Anyway from 4.5 minutes to 2-3 is great!
What I did with graded readers/extensive reading this month, that I am hoping is why this helped:
Read graded reader (butterfly lovers, Pleco, 500 unique characters) - not hard but very satisfying to finish it and read it quickly when it used to take me 40 minutes to read a few Pleco pages of it). So that was a few thousand words comprehensible extensive reading.
Read another graded reader, chinese short stories. While I think it’s good as a study companion, a lot of very specific words which I tripped on (antique coins, being scammed). Which was fine I just think it was not the funnest reading material? It was mostly graded reader though I had to look up a couple handfuls of words.
Read a little of my 500 character Sinolingua reader (2 stories). Also read through the back of it which has all the words in the book, and the HSK 3 words included in the book - I knew all those words but it was a nice refresher. Mostly it was just nice to see how much easier these stories were to read compared to when I first got the book. (I would recommend these books as readers if you want something for adults and in short segments, the short stories are simplified prose from established authors, and the quality of storytelling can therefore be felt a bit. They feel more meaningful as short stories and therefore enjoyable if a bit basic (since they’ve been simplified). You can tell though compared to the Chinese Short Stories book above, which was probably written by a teacher/language textbook maker and not necessarily a literary writer.
Read mandarin companion journey to the center of the earth. 450 unique characters. Another easy read that felt really nice, compared to when I first read a mandarin companion book.
Started reading 小王子 on paper, so extensive reading with little word look up (I’ve looked up less than 10 words so far when reading on paper - notable words I looked up because it frustrated me I didn’t know them: 悲伤,惊奇,惊讶,匆匆,逐渐,观察,测试 a lot of these because I know I’ve seen these Hanzi before I just never remember specifically like 惊讶 惊奇 what the difference is or guan pronunciation 观察 or 测 I tend to forget when it’s not in 测试). I started reading it because it’s supposed to have around 2000 unique words (so not too many), and be pretty easy reading level (so a bit easier than 活着 which is the novel Chinese learners often get recommended). Basically, this was the extensive reading book choice step up from graded readers - it’s got a bit over 1000 unique hanzi, not an overwhelming amount of unique words, but it is not a graded reader so if it goes well I could jump to other stuff of similar or slightly less “ease” while still having it feel this “easy” to read (and hopefully take days to read instead of months).
Started reading 笑猫日记之会唱歌的猫 in Pleco, so clicking words I didn’t know (though this one only had a word or two a page unknown). I saw it recommended on a Chinese learners form as easy reading material after graded readers, and I agree! It’s very easy to read! I could understand it without clicking words but it is nice to understand fully since it’s convenient, and look up the pronunciation etc. I read 8 chapters so far. I also listened to a few chapters after reading, but idk if it helped at all.
15 ish chapters into 小王子 I found it online and reread 4 chapters with a click dictionary for unknown words. It was nice just clarifying the word pronunciations and fuzzy bits, also the online translation was different so seeing the difference on how they decided to word it (mostly just seeing synonyms used instead or different sayings for certain parts). I listened to a couple chapters audio afterwards, idk if it helped.
Unrelated, but I did listen read to 5 chapters of 默读 mainly following the Chinese text so, idk if that would’ve helped my overall reading at all (I want to say no but I did notice in general much more general gist comprehension of lines in MoDu then last time I read a couple months ago - although listening to the audio and being able to glance at the English for unknown words of course also makes things much more comprehensible that’s why listen reading method is the structure it is ahh).
Listened to some audio for 小王子 during work because I happened to find it, for chapters 1-4. Just playing in the background. I looked at the text while listening to one to match pronunciation to some words, since the chapter was like 5 minutes long in listening. Again interesting to see their word choice since It was yet another translation (I think I like my print books translation best).
Back to reading print 小王子 today and I think the audio beforehand did help me with being able to pronounce more of what I’m reading. Read like 4 chapters in one short break, another 3 chapters just now. While I don’t know how well the reading speed will translate to reading harder stuff like guardian (which was oddly also taking me 5 minutes a page? Why is that my default speed?), my reading speed doing extensive reading on “stuff mostly easy” to me has increased noticeably. (Fun fact when I read English technical text like psychology and physics books and educational etc I think my reading speed is it’s like 10-20 pages an hour... I do not read non fiction very fast).
So anyway, my goal with extensive reading easy material this month was to see if I could push UP what my starting base level “easy” material is.
What I used to do is practice with an “easier text” (which was still pretty hard for me tbh) and then once it got bearable (took 30-40 minutes to read instead of an hour), I’d switch to a harder material that took me 1-1.5 hours to read. Then when I’d burn out, I’d go back to that “easier” text until it got easier at 20-30 minutes to read. Then I might pick a harder base reading text (usually what used to be the hard one that would now take 30-40 minutes to read), and find something even harder. Lately that has been 寒舍 as my “easier” text, taking 20-30 minutes a full chapter (2 mini chapters), and 天涯客 as my harder text at 30-40ish minutes a chapter. And yes, at this point I could pick something harder but they’re both hard enough I was just sticking to them. You might notice none of these were actually easy for me though, my actual base easy materials were still graded readers, and manhua. So I want to push that upward until there’s some “easier” material below 寒舍 that I can be built up to and read easily Without a dictionary aid. So I can have a solid base that’s reliable. Hanshe is an “easier” practice material but it’s not necessarily something I can read extensively with ease. But if I keep pushing up the difficulty of what I can extensively read, bit by bit, I will eventually Get it to hanshe (or a little below it realistically but still firmly in regular-webnovel-exist at the reading level). I will not get faster at reading these hard things unless my base level of reading is both higher and already a reasonable speed. (I’m guessing anyway??).
Well happy to say this plan is working. I guess the advice articles I read were right somewhat. I knew graded readers could drag you from 0 beginner to some reading ability, since It’s what I originally did with Chinese (and even French sort of). But I was very quick about it because I’m impatient and easily bored by too-easy things apparently lol. I read 1 mandarin companion graded reader (the 300 word Sherlock Holmes one), a couple chapters of 2 other graded readers, then started on a random webnovel (the bl 他们的故事 which somehow thankfully is on the easier end for novels) and looked a lot of words up to get through. But I did not think to try to “match my reading level and increase gradually” in regular novels, even tho if it works for graded readers it probably works for regular stuff!
And in school in our native languages, that’s why our elementary schools had libraries, and we read books for our age group and the chapter books we read were much easier than what we read as teens or what adults read! I remember bunnicula and cat wings those were not hard but they were chapter stories. Then I remember Dracula and hg wells and mark Twain in high school and how they felt a bit Hard despite me being one of those kids rated at college reading level in 3rd grade. Now as a kid? I had the same tendencies I do now, so I’m not surprised I always jump in the deep end and Try to read hard stuff (and it must help since it’s part of why I got good at reading my native language, and definitely has helped my chinese and french). I would be like 7 and pick up a mitchner novel of My dad’s (is that the author of stuff like Alaska etc?) and I’d read a couple pages and feel drained trying to follow it and give up. Or the huge The Witching Hour by Anne Rice, or HG Wells History of the world, or the biography of benjamin Franklin, I never finished any of these or had any idea what they were about I just got curious and opened up a couple pages every now and then. Yet somehow that must’ve been part of why my reading level so early on was considered “good”? I’m guessing.
But I wasn’t actually good at reading in the sense of doing it often or fast until my dad started reading to me at like age 8-9 I think it was Harry Potter which at the time worked out since the books got harder each time, and also my dad reads out loud slow just like he tutors slow lol so eventually I read myself so he’d stop boring me (I love him and loved the bonding time I’m sure but truly i just apparently always liked jumping in the deep end). Eventually his strategy Im guessing to get me to read slightly harder stuff each time worked, because by books 4-5 I read each in 2 days. He was so impressed because before that I couldn’t read long books and not fast, and that’s when he thought I got good at reading. Looking back lol it’s actually so funny? How much work he had to do to get me to read and how what ended up working I still sort of do now. He started me on Hop on Pop as a kid as my first book cause One Fish Two Fish bored me and I thought jumping on a dad was funny, and he did that just to do something to get me to pick up a book lol. Then he got me that digital book toy they had back then where you had a real book but it was in a digital holder and if you clicked words with the pen it read them out loud. Literally how I learn Chinese now... he really got me digital equivalent to graded readers back then ToT. And just like as a kid I still pick up stuff way beyond my level and just read a couple pages at random. It’s just. Kind of funny to me how much I didn’t really change that much after all ToT
BACK ON THE TOPIC OF APRIL PROGRESS lol ok. I listened to Guardian ep 1 today just in the background so no subs etc and I was Floored by how much I completely understood. I’ve been listening to SpoonFed chinese again (15 audios listened to this month), but I’m floored if it made a difference?! Since I was mostly listening in the background not focusing and missing some stuff. Idk if it made a difference, or listening reading method just that 1.5 hours I did this month or what. Or if my listening skills have been this decent I just don’t test them since I usually watch shows with hard Chinese subs (and read the subs), or watch shows with English subs. So like. Anyway mejo back in what was it august 2019 when I started studying? Would be so happy. Back when I started watching guardian and only knew ni hao and xie xie and zai jian.
Also I can’t even remember now if I did extensive reading guardian (after reading the English translation), this month too or just last month. But I’m sure that helped and I should test general reading sometime of a priest novel. Like.. literally what kicked off the “I should extensive read more” this month is me Desperately wanting to kick up my reading speed after the horrific 25 page guardian chapter I read that took like 1.5 hours.

Hello! Do you have a tutorial on colouring the way you did for the rainbow gifset and the yellow & blue one?
hey! i didn’t before, but i wrote one under the cut for you! hope it helps :)
a couple of warnings before we begin: 1. i don’t use psds, i colour from scratch every time, i just always use the same steps so i can’t give you exact numbers for things, it’s just whatever i think looks best for a given gif; 2. i don’t actually know anything technical about photoshop, all that’s behind my decisions with layers and values is knowing from experience that it usually looks good like that, i don’t have technical knowledge to back it up; 3. i’m not gonna include pictures because my pc can’t handle running photoshop and a browser at the same time, but i will try my best to make this as detailed as possible (i’m sorry if i make it too detailed or not enough, i’m trying my best). now onto the actual tutorial!
my first layer is always exposure. i usually put -0,002 for offset and 0,90 for gamma correction. what value i choose for exposure depends on how bright the scene is, but it’s usually between 0,75 and 2,5.
after that, i do brightness, if i think it’s necessary. sometimes upping the exposure too much isn’t worth it because it makes whites and sometimes even just light colours way too white. in those cases, i’m just better off leaving it at a lower exposure and adding a brightness layer after it with a value between like 20 and 50.
next is levels. idk what things are called here, i just put 10 in the first arrow and something between 0,8 and 0,9 in the second and i do not mess with the third. all this in the rgb part, i don’t mess with specific channels in this layer. i do this bc i like my gifsets to have like defined blacks/darker tones, but if you don’t, you can just skip this.
after levels comes colour balance. i know some people swear by it, but i gotta be honest, i don’t use it in every gif. i only use colour balance if the tone of the gif is too far off from what i want. it depends a lot on the scene/show, but usually i wanna go from something green-tinted to more blue, just bc i like blue better, so i usually just put a blue value between 10 and 25 on all options (shadows, midtones, highlights). i like oranges/yellows/reds to look warmer, so i usually also add a little red in at least shadows. but this isn’t rocket science, i just mess around with the arrows until i think it looks pretty/easier to get where i want.
since you specifically asked about my rainbow gifs, i’m gonna admit here that i totally cheat on those. usually, i’ll purposefully choose a shot that is very still and/or very easy to manipulate into the colour i want (blues to greens and vice versa, blues to purples and vice versa, yellows to greens, reds to oranges, etc. etc.) so, depending of which of those two situations i have, i do one of these:
a. if the background colour is easy to convert, i’ll just use a hue/saturation layer to change it (or even selective color if it’s like really easy and i don’t wanna bother with making a separate layer for it). i just mess around with the arrows in the colour the gif does have until it changes to the colour i want.
b. if the scene is very still, i just paint the background. i just pick the colour i want, paint over the background and then set the layer to hue or color. that’s it. that’s my big trick. lol
ok, so, after i have the background colour i want, i add selective color layers. usually at least two, sometimes more. the first layer i use to mess with reds and yellows for the skin tone, whites if there’s a lot of brightness in someone’s face (usually put the blacks in a value between 25 and 75) and the greys and blacks in case the gif looks too dark (also only mess with the black values, but never more than positive or negative 10 in greys and no more than negative 1 or positive 10 in black). second layer i do minor adjustments on skin tone and really up the values on the colour i want. like, pushing the values to 100 upping it hahah for rainbow gifs, i usually add like between 2 and 5 layers after that just upping that colour.
once i’m happy with the selective color layers, i add another levels layer. once again, 10 on the first arrow on rgb, but something between 1,10 and 1,30 on the second. i also change the blue channel. i like skin tones and colours in general looking more on the warm side, so i go a bit overboard with it on those selective layers sometimes and it ends up just being very orange, so i use levels to scale that back a little. i put 10 on the first arrow in the blue channel, between 1,10 and 1,30 in the second and then between 1,45 and 1,25 on the third.
after that, i add a brightness layer, if necessary. same values as before.
the last step is vibrance. i don’t mess with saturation values, usually, only vibrance. i never go below 50 or over 100, but pretty much always it’s 80.
and that’s it! sorry this “tutorial” was so messy, but i hope it was still somewhat helpful :)

the master plotting post is below the cut. it’s kinda long so good luck fam. it’s really more about where my character are and how they’re doing but i am hoping that will help us both brainstorm some ideas together. i have put trigger warnings next to each individual blurb so that way if you’re worried about anything you can read the rest while skipping any that are potentially triggering. this is just where characters are starting a few of them i may still update, especially for characters who fears i haven’t completely worked out. toss this a like if you’d be interested in plotting and i will come to you! i will get another call out specifically for starters closer to the event
level 1: windstorm
asami sato / the legend of korra / unaware
girl is not really phased by the windstorm and will be pushing through and probably wind up leveling up. she’ll also be offering to help where she can so like if any characters need help to level up or just get by she will be around we can def do something. she’ll probably be getting pieces of her memories back in the storm but nothing concrete. probably one of my characters who realistically has a chance of making it to the safe zone. definitely open to teaming up

let’s be real after everything she’s been through in washington the windstorm does not feel like a big deal and she’s charging through to get through to the next level. she will ultimately wind up losing all of her memories as a result

plots: teammates, people she knows who can find her after her memory loss, some help after her memory loss, someone she helps, since afterwards she’ll be bunkering down and helping people out
max caulfield / life is strange / aware
my one character? who is terrified for storms? caught in the windstorm? asdlfkjad incredible. anyway max is going to be freaking out and almost definitely stuck here the whole time she is terrified of storms and will be hoping to find a nice corner to crawl in and stay in with her hands over her ears
leveling up: no
plots: someone to help her please she will be screwed on her own,
melody pond/river song / doctor who / awareish
she will absolutely be leveling up. river is a high energy adventurer who is so shit at sitting still there’s no way she’s not moving up. honestly will be pretty unbothered in this level at least. i may give her some flashes of her parents from the windstorm to kind of set her on edge. down to team up though she’s always out for herself first and will ditch partners as needed
leveling up: probably
plots: let her be a chaotic teammate for someone, an injury she reluctantly treats as she tries to get out of there
pansy parkinson / harry potter / aware
honestly she’s mostly just tired and pissed. pansy, though obnoxious, is logical and focused on her own survival first. she’ll probably wind up finding a save space to be and see this thing out. if anyone needs some slightly less chaotic plots she’s probably someone good to hit up. she could be open to being the obnoxious teammate someone has ever had.
leveling up: no
plots: teammates in the sort of self serving way, bunkering down buddies, drinking buddies, a calm party crew

she’s a goddess she’s vibing and almost definitely leveling up tbh she doesn’t know what’s going on and her main priorities are finding hades and reluctantly nico but will try to offer some help where she can

ben hargreeves / the umbrella academy / aware 
his nightmares are p limited ngl since being dead kind of takes away a lot of fears. i mean his main one was passing on and he did that last season so, i guess it’ll kinda be his powers. of course he’s mostly afraid of losing control and hurting people, but he’ll probably just be seeing/dealing with vague eldritch creatures. could maybe deal with his fear long enough but that’s really the only way he’s potentially leveling up. potentially open to teaming up

plots: some people he helps, teammates, maybe someone he accidentally hurts cause he does have powers and he may lash out when spooked so could cause an inury, 
jang man wol / hotel del luna / aware / level 2: nightmares come to life
her fears are complicated. like ? she mostly fears and hates herself lmao. i suppose she has some fear of the gods in her world but they aren’t really violent and can only hurt her if she hurts a human so she might be seeing them and getting freaked out and jumpy and convinced she’s gonna do something that ultimately gets her destroyed. honestly though, she’s at the second most stable she’s been in a while (a step down since chan sung’s memory loss) so she will be making her way to level 3 at some point.
leveling up: yes
plots: uh, maybe someone she almost lashes out and hurts but manages to last minute hold back, someone she helps/protects to avoid her own problems, though she wouldn’t be nice about it rip
jaskier / the witcher / unaware / level 2: nightmares come to life
this is my emotional support idiot he doesn’t really have any tangible fears not because he’s strong he’s just dumb, will be running straight into things trying to help people out. i would say he should get hurt but this man has survivridiculouslysly well on luck and charisma so far and i don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon. if i think of a fear for him i will update this. will probably find someone who looks strong to leech off of and feel safer around. you just know this idiot is writing a song about the whole experience as it occurs.

karolina dean / runaways / unaware
aaah um i’m not entirely decided on what her fear is yet at the moment but she’ll be doing her best to deal with it. honestly i don’t think she’ll be leveling up karolina is strong but struggling without her memories in terms of fighting. i might have her see her dad a bit even though she won’t recognize him she’ll feel the fear

plots: any sort of teammates cause she works well in groups, maybe someone who sees her attempting to use her powers to fight things off 
kyoshi / avatar the last airbender / unaware
so kyoshi is not afraid of much. she’s a seven foot tall beast of a woman/nerd so of course she isn’t, but, i’m saying she’s afraid of clowns, because kyoshi is gonna panic and wind up bending in defense. of course she has no memories so she’s gonna spend the rest of the event like ‘hey what the fuck was that????’ honestly she may be able to level up but she’ll probably be focusing on helping people in level 2 as best she can

plots: a teammate would be fine though she’ll probably only want one, she’ll have just discovered her bending so someone can be around for her to yell about that, any people she attempts to protect/get to safety

werewolves! she’s scared of them! because of course she is! and she’s absolutely flipping out! she’s probably stuck here ngl i do not think lavender is conquering this anytime soon. she’d fight a little bit but i imagine she’s mostly going to wind up hiding out. could probably use some help or support ngl. i debated saying she could get injured but i feel like this is already going to be rough enough on her ngl

plots: anyone to help her out she could use it, i would offer her as a teammate but she’s going to be pretty freaked out so idk how much she can do, but maybe someone she likes hides out with and just tries to survive with

death tw welcome to lesbian suffering. her biggest fear is going to end up in her seeing haruka’s dead body and uh, she’s definitely not recovering from this one she will be staying on this level the whole time probably losing her mind a little bit and not knowing what happened and blaming herself and it’s all going to be rough.

plots: she may attempt to team up with a person or two but her mood is going to be awful and she won’t be a great teammate, honestly anyone around to try and keep her slightly grounded
sam giddings / until dawn / aware
hello happy children it’s wendigo time! exactly what it sounds like. she’s not leveling up. this is a monster that eats people and can only be killed with fire. sam is running. going to be terrified but not freaking out at least not externally. might go for a minor injury with her. down to team up with anyone

plots: lmao survival buddies, despite everything she will try to be helping people out so there could be something for that
toph beifong / avatar the last airbender / aware
so toph’s fears will probably include not having any earth around or below her. honestly this fear is less about her seismic sense and not being able to tell where things are around her. her other senses are still good even if it’s really not ideal and that will be partially upsetting, it’s more about feeling like she lost her earthbending. she’s also terrified of heights after dangling off of the warship in the finale so i might do something with that. i doubt she’s leveling up. down to reluctantly team up.
leveling up: no
plots: would be willing to team up but she’s feeling a little useless and stressed so how great she’d be as a partner would be mixed, she could cause an injury if anyone wants since she can’t sense any earth but i’m assuming there’s still going to be things she can bend around, so maybe some sort of an accident with that, honestly let her make a friend she’s not against help from friends will hold onto their arm most of the time
level 3: poisoned supernaturals
ciel phantomhive / black butler / aware 
gun tw: this boy has already had bad experiences with supernaturals so he’s not in a good mood about any of this. he’s got a gun and his concerns are himself and lizzie and that is about it. he knows physical strength is not his strong suit and has no intention of trying to fight his way out. may try and play the small defenseless boy card if he needs to in order to get some help and protection from actual nice humans on the level. not available to team up. available to trip another character while they’re both fleeing from the same thing.
leveling up: no
plots: someone who he injures, someone who injures him, a human he partners up with and could betray cause he’s a selfish little shit if that’s something someone’s interested in, or some human who’s physically strong who he pays to be around him as some sort of safety
dominique weasley / harry potter / aware
not a huge chance she’s doing anything but staying here and going ape shit. does not really have the willpower to manage to fight off the poison. is solidly in the middle between barely dangerous to destructive beast.
leveling up: no
plots: a feral crew, someone she hurts, someone who tries to snap her out of it, anything
elsa of arendelle / frozen / aware 
ice queen time babey! will be pretty destructive and very dangerous. open to her killing someone’s character if anyone wants since i’d love her to be upset about that after the fact. she already thinks she’s a danger let’s prove it!! she might wind up fighting off the poison but idk it would take a hot minute since she’s had a lot of stress and frustration lately and it’ll be coming out!! she’s ready to do some damage
leveling up: maybe
plots: someone she hurts and can feel real guilty about, someone who tries to snap her out of it
entrapta / she-ra / unaware
not nearly as concerned about danger as she should be. probably out here purposely trying to approach supernaturals to get a blood sample i hate her. not looking for her to die but could be open to a semi-serious injury. might level up ngl if she finds decent tech she will be able to defend herself. open to team ups but she’s not a great team partner
leveling up: maybe
plots: teammates. maybe someone who teams up with her to use her more than anything since she can build attack bots with really any scraps she can find so she’s good for people looking for defense and will not be able to tell she’s being used
glinda upland / wicked / aware
me realizing just this second glinda probably counts as a supernatural cause she’s got magic:  👁👄👁 so yeah uh this one is difficult i think she’ll be working to fight it off. even with poison she would not be good at being violent fam.
leveling up: maybe
plots: uuuh poisoned people trying to push her to the dark side, someone trying to help her fight it off, maybe a human she fights but doesn’t hurt, or if so it’s something minor, anything
haruhi fujioka / ouran high school host club / aware 
does not know what’s going on and isn’t sure they want to. tbh slightly similar to entrapta in the sense that they can manage self defense alright. they’re going to pepper spray a supernatural so fucking hard i swear to god. they aren’t like a super amazing fighter and sometimes they’re too reckless and stubborn for their own good, but haruhi is smart, and will probably mostly be hiding. they could be available for trying to help out other humans on the level
leveling up: maybe 
plots: single teammate or group of humans getting by, a not too strong supernatural for her to fight cause i don’t want her getting too hurt, but could be up for a small injury, anyone she helps
ji eun tak / goblin / aware 
lmao so technically eun tak has powers but they aren’t fighting powers she can just see ghosts but technically this still counts as powers so she’s affected. this doesn’t make her any stronger though she’s just angry but like not a threat. here is a picture of eun tak as provided by kasey (x). like the worst shes gonna manage is to mug someone and honestly, that is probably her goal. my girl has lived her whole life poor and she’s ready to make some bank

plots: lmao please give her a strong supernatural that she’s hanging around so we’ve got destructive power plus baby with knife, someone she tries to, or successfully mugs, if you need a weak supernautral to fight to level your character out of level 3 she’s a good pick, anything
rita skeeter / harry potter / aware 
rita will probably go crazy stupid for a day and then start fighting it off. tbh she doesn’t care too much about if she’s hurting people. it’s not something she likes to do but it doesn’t freak her out a ton either, but she doesn’t like being out of control, and that sheer stubbornness might be enough for her to break through and level up. down for her potentially hurting or killing someone’s character if desired. will still be taking tik toks through it all the poison is not enough to stop that. she can hunt and film at the same time
leveling up: maybe
plots: feral crew, any other supernaturals working to fight it off at some point, i’m not saying let her film ur supernatural hurting an npc but like do it, anything
tessa gray / the infernal devices / awareish
so technically she’s part shadowhunter part demon but homegirl does not know it so it’s going to be a fucking interesting time for her. honestly destructive power is mixed cause she’s certainly got some but the lack of awareness will make it weaker. will probably use this as an excuse to trigger a few more of her memories. open to her injuring someone.

plots: uh, someone she can freak out to in the first 24 hours before the poison hits because she doesn’t even know she’s supernatural, someone she gives a minor injury to maybe, someone trying to snap her out of it, anything

Emily Sonnett - player analysis
A compilation of Sonnett‘s strengths, weaknesses (cause everyone has them) and general observations from Portland and USWNT games (mostly from 2018 and 2019) ft. my irrelevant opinion.

Before I’ll start a few notes:
I’m obviously not a professional soccer analyst person or whatever, so please don’t come for my ass. These are just patterns or reoccurring things in Sonnett’s game I observed while rewatching tons of PTFC and USWNT games. 
I will focus on a few key points, that doesn’t mean that she has deficiencies in other aspects, sometimes it’s just hard to show them and I tried to avoid stating arguments without giving visual evidence. (All the links and credits are below the gifs)
I would love it if you gave additions, feedback or criticism to this post but all in all I just hope that you enjoy reading a bit about Sonnett’s more professional side and soccer tactics in general.
Please let me know if the format is weird, I’m still figuring out how to make big posts.
I sincerely apologize for the low quality of gifs, as I said, I’m figuring things out and I wasn’t able to upload proper clips.
And lastly, Sonnett is a precious little bean and I enjoyed making this more than I should have. Also, did I use this as an excuse to spend days on end rewatching old games? Yes I did.
I will start with three main strengths I think she brings to the pitch:
Communication / Leading the back line                                               (this is in regards to her position with the Thorns, I will talk about the differences between PTFC/USWNT later on)

As a center back you naturally have a more responsible role in terms of shifting players that are in front of you and communicating things to them they can’t necessarily see. Sonnett embraces that role completely and at 25 years old she is at the level of world class CBs in that regard. A lot of players take on that role much later in their career. Her college coach Steve Swanson for the University of Virginia said about her:
"There is a standard of focus and intensity that Emily demands of the players that play around her. She’s not afraid to hold her teammates accountable in that regard. That was one of the unique aspects of our team dynamic this year, is that Emily's style of leadership is different than the team was used to. I think the team has recognized that the qualities Emily has, we need.“

This clip I wanted to show you is from a situation that is very common for a defensive line but overlooked bc we as viewers naturally tend to look at the movement of the ball. It’s the intentional shifting of the back line in the exact right moment to let an opposing attacker run into offside. In the original video you can hear Sonnett shout “DROP THE LINE“ and Menges and Kling follow her movement which results in Alex being successfully caught offside at the side line.

A simple moment but a very crucial part of back line coordination.
      2.    Box positioning
A.k.a. one of the most important parts of good defending. Sonnett covers runs from attackers almost always with textbook precision. She anticipates passes and is able intercept balls which makes her a proactive rather than a reactive player. When she does have to go for a tackle she brings a feistiness that she probably learnt from a certain Kelley O’Hara I can imagine. She usually opts for slide tackles and that decision could be debatable if you’re the coach but it’s just so good to look at tbh

But anyway, her box positioning. Having watched a lot of games with my eyes glued to number 16, I can of course safely say that Sonnett knows what she’s doing. But I’ve been thinking more and more that she often has a sort of intuitive approach when it comes to box positioning in particular. For this next clip I’m gonna need your opinion. Normally I wouldn’t tell Sonnett to abandon her player in that moment, especially bc it creates a 3v2 situation on the attackers left side and also considering the angle in which Dunn is facing the goal. However, she steps in and is able to block the ball.

    3.   Offensive effort
Sonnett is one of the highest scoring CBs of the league but her offensive efforts aren’t measurable in just goals. For corner kicks she likes to do the near-post run Julie Ertz style and has been successful in the past, most notably the 2-0 in the semifinal 2017 against Orlando (which resulted in this gem of a gif):

She likes to stay up top for a bit when her position is covered by someone else and tbh I’m living for these moments.
Here she encourages quick playing and would have gotten through with it if the nwsl had good refs. She didn’t even touch her. (get it? haha)

Here she drives the ball after winning it, even if her teammates are pushing up late and then she stays up front to participate in the counter attack. Unfortunately nothing evolves out of this situation.

Right. Those were the strengths, in terms of weaknesses, I don’t wanna pick apart the smallest things but this is what I found:
Misjudged midfield positioning
We’ve talked about her excellent positioning in the box, however, a huge part of modern soccer is having the Center Backs pushed up to the half-line (as well as inverted outside backs but that’s another point). And what I’ve noticed is that sometimes during turnovers Sonnett goes in to put pressure on the player and with that an even wider space opens up behind her that the opposing team could exploit. Like in this picture.

Blue is the ball movement, red (Sonnett) goes in when in my opinion green (Lindsey) should have been the one putting pressure on the ball bc now Daly can run into that open space.

Luckily Sonnett’s speed prevents Houston from getting anything out of it but Daly tried it several times during the game.

My second example is that iconic tactical foul against ARod that we all remember.

Her positioning isn’t optimal, Klings pass isn’t the best, ARod gets her off of the wrong foot, she can’t turn around fast enough and has to stop her with a professional foul which is (I’ll say it again) demanded by coaches in situations like that. But anyway, tumblr has talked enough about this game rip
      2. Determining the biggest threat
This is a minor one, because Sonnett is usually really good at reading the game and making the right decisions. However in this game against Australia, she tries to cover the space behind Dahl which is technically reasonable but considering how wide open the Australian is, she should have closed her in earlier. That little hop inside the center of the field made the difference and the opposing player was able to score.

I think it’s safe to say that stuff like this comes with age and experience. And again, Sonnett is only 25!

Two more things I wanted to include are two risks that could be relevant in the future.
From time to time she doesn’t control her arm movement in the box.

This is obviously the natural thing you do when you make a move like that but with the new rules by Fifa, defenders are more and more limited and this would have been a penalty if it had hit her arm. Idk it could bite her in the ass at some point.
      2. Intuitive positioning 
We’ve talked about this and people might have different opinions on it. I personally think though that this might make the difference between a great and a world class defender. So I say go for it Sonny.
Phew, I’m almost done guys, congrats for getting this far, I hope it’s interesting at all.
The last thing I wanna mention is this: The difference between Portland Sonnett and National Team Sonnett, a.k.a. CB Sonnett and RB Sonnett.
Even though as a right back your role is more offensive, I feel like Sonnett has to be pushed to go for it. She rarely does those runs in behind the winger and towards the end line. When she does it it’s great but compared to Kelley she simply isn’t there yet. It also seems to me like for Portland she takes more liberties in pushing forward which maybe is a confidence thing as well. She is a given for the Thorns but had to fight to regain that roster spot for the NT in 2017 after not being called up for several months. Maybe the fear of making mistakes bc of being out of position hinders her a bit? (I’m saying this while being aware that I of course don’t know what the coaches want her to do and what the different game plans require of her.) Anyway, I love her 1v1 defending as RB. I think she is underrated and absolutely deserves a spot on the Olympic roster next year.
