The gods in The Odyssey rlly seem to favor Odysseus more than others. Is this because he’s truly special, or is it something else? I never really got that...
Oh, do the gods really favor Odysseus? That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? And I get it, it seems like they do. I mean, Athena is practically his personal cheerleader. But let’s not get too carried away thinking that divine favor is the same thing as unconditional love. If you think the gods are just handing him a free pass because he’s special, then you’ve missed the point entirely.
First off, favor in the world of the gods is a bit more complicated than that. It’s not about handing out blessings. The gods don’t play like that. They’re manipulative, they’re petty, they’re capricious, and frankly, they love a good power struggle.
Athena’s all over Odysseus because she’s into his cleverness, his strategic mind. But Athena is not the only one in the picture, and she’s certainly not the only god pulling the strings. Poseidon, for example, is literally trying to ruin Odysseus’ life. Like, full-on vendetta mode. If you want to talk about a god who’s definitely not favorable to Odysseus, Poseidon’s your guy. Odysseus blinds his son, Polyphemus, and Poseidon’s been dragging his ass across the world, sending storms, wrecking ships, keeping him stranded just to get back at him. That’s some major divine spite right there. So no, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows for Odysseus in the divine world.
And Zeus himself is not particularly fond of Odysseus, but he’s not really against him either. It’s more like Zeus is watching Odysseus, like some cosmic reality TV show where he’s the producer, deciding how much drama he’s going to let unfold before deciding if he’ll step in and make the plot twist. Zeus’ favor is never straightforward. He’s just as likely to screw Odysseus over as he is to give him a hand, depending on what serves his divine narrative in the moment (he does seem to take a liking to Telemachus, however, protecting him and granting all his prayers). And Zeus’ help comes down to something far more pragmatic: the suitors. The gods don’t like when the sacred laws of hospitality — xenia — are broken. And in Ithaca, that’s exactly what’s happening. The suitors have trampled over the sacred bond of guest and host, treating Penelope and Telemachus (who, again, Zeus loves for some reason) with disrespect and raiding Odysseus’ home as if it were their own. They’ve forgotten what it means to show proper hospitality, abusing their position as guests with violence, greed, and arrogance. So, when Odysseus is found by the Phaeacians and taken into their court, it’s no accident. Athena, of course, has had her hand in this, ensuring that he’s welcomed and given the hospitality he deserves, but it’s Zeus who ultimately ensures that this moment happens at all. Zeus watches from afar, his eyes on Ithaca, where the suitors are growing bolder by the day, but his focus shifts when Odysseus arrives in there. The gods see the insult of the suitors as an affront to the divine order. They know Odysseus has suffered long enough, and they know he needs help, but it’s not just about him anymore. It’s about setting things right.
This is also why Poseidon cannot kill Odysseus.
Odysseus must not be killed, and he is to return to his homeland. Athena reassures us, at the end of the book, that Odysseus will die of old age, safely, in his home. And who else can make that happen except for Zeus?
If Poseidon were to outright kill Odysseus — if he were to defy the will of Zeus and remove the mortal from the world — there would be consequences. Poseidon might be able to get away with making Odysseus’ life miserable, extending his suffering, but he knows Zeus would not stand idly by. Zeus is not blind to the suffering of his favored mortals, and Odysseus, despite Poseidon’s best efforts, has a divine protection. Athena and other gods work in the background, ensuring that the hero will survive the trials he faces.
Buttttt if we’re talking about whether the gods favor Odysseus, let’s not overlook Hermes, who actually does play a crucial protective role in Odysseus’ journey. Unlike the gods who are more invested in their own agendas — looking for ways to manipulate, punish, or reward Odysseus for their own purposes — Hermes is, in his own way, a guardian of Odysseus’ path. Now, Hermes isn’t exactly smothering Odysseus the way Athena does. He doesn’t swoop in with that personal “you’re my special chosen one” vibe. But he’s definitely looking out for him, because, well, Odysseus is a hero, and it’s part of Hermes’ job to help heroes. He’s the one who acts as a protector of those who are trying to do something great or trying to get somewhere. Travelers, wanderers, heroes in peril — those are his people. So when Odysseus is in need of help, it’s Hermes who swoops in with a dose of divine practicality.
The most obvious example of Hermes’ protection is when Odysseus lands on Circe’s island. Circe, as we know, has this little hobby of turning men into pigs, and Odysseus, like many before him, is about to fall prey to her tricks. Now, the gods don’t generally intervene with every mortal problem, but Hermes gives Odysseus the moly — that magical herb that protects him from Circe’s spell. Hermes doesn’t do this because he’s head-over-heels for Odysseus or wants to see him succeed out of some personal affection. He does it because, well, Odysseus is a hero and a traveler, and it’s his job to make sure heroes make it through dangerous journeys, whether he likes the guy or not. Same as when he sent Calypso the message to let him go. Hermes doesn’t ask him if he’s okay, doesn’t check in with his emotions; he simply says, “Go. The gods want you to go.” He has a bit more of a “here’s a tool, now go do your thing” vibe. He’s not here to offer emotional support; he’s here to give Odysseus the necessary means to get what he needs done.
So, in the grand scheme of things, Hermes’ help is practical, not sentimental. He’s a god of boundaries, transitions, and messages, and when it comes to Odysseus, he’s not there to offer emotional guidance. He’s there to keep things moving, to keep the mortal moving according to the plan, no matter how hard or traumatic it might be for him.
Now, Helios, the sun god, is infuriated when Odysseus’ men slaughter his sacred cattle on Thrinacia, but his wrath is directed entirely at the crew. Odysseus himself warns his men against harming the cattle, showing restraint and respect for divine boundaries. Helios likely holds no personal grudge against Odysseus; his punishment is enacted through Zeus, who destroys the crew’s ship as recompense for their sacrilege. Helios is more of a neutral force in this context, concerned with the preservation of his property rather than the moral character of the individuals involved. While Circe, Helios’ daughter, is often described as a goddess in some versions, she is primarily considered a nymph. As such, her favor or disfavor doesn’t carry the weight of the Olympians. She doesn’t actively choose Odysseus as a favored, but she does assist him after he demonstrates his cunning and proves immune to her enchantments (thanks to Hermes’ moly). Their relationship is more transactional than anything else: she helps him after he asserts control and provides guidance for his journey.
Calypso is often described as a nymph or a goddess-nymph hybrid, but regardless of her exact classification, her power is undeniable. Calypso doesn’t favor Odysseus in any altruistic sense; her so-called love for him is rooted in selfish desire. Over seven long years, Calypso forces herself upon him, coercing him into a relationship he doesn’t want. This is not an equal exchange or a romantic idyll; Odysseus repeatedly longs to return to Ithaca, to his wife, Penelope, and to his home. Calypso’s offers of immortality and eternal youth aren’t gifts; they’re traps, designed to bind him to her forever. And it takes the intervention of Zeus and Hermes to force her hand. When Hermes delivers Zeus’ decree, Calypso is furious, lamenting the double standards of the gods, who allow male deities to consort with mortals freely but reprimand goddesses for doing the same, all to defend herself raping a man. Calypso’s treatment of Odysseus underscores the darker side of divine attention, where mortals are tools or playthings rather than individuals with their own wills and needs.
And now we get to focus more on your question.
Odysseus isn’t just special because he’s super clever. He's special because, for better or worse, he’s the center of everyone’s drama. Every. Single. God. The gods love meddling in mortal affairs, and Odysseus’ story gives them all the opportunity to play out their power struggles and whims. It’s not just Athena pulling strings behind the scenes; Zeus gets involved, Poseidon gets involved, Hermes throws in his own two stolen cents, two goddesses fall in love with him, and even Apollo has his say (it is said Apollo guided his arrow during his battle with the suitors, however it is up to you if you interpret that as literal or metaphorical). You want to talk about special? Well, what’s actually special is that Odysseus is the one man the gods can’t totally control, save for a few honorable mentions from the Iliad.
Speaking of the Iliad, you see gods throwing all sorts of diplomatic warfare around. But with Odysseus? He’s not following the script. Athena helps him, sure, but even she’s frustrated with how much he insists on doing things his way. Snap back to The Odyssey, take his time in the cave with the Cyclops, Polyphemus. Athena can't directly interfere because he’s being a cocky bastard (which is, you know, typical Odysseus behavior). Instead, she just gives him advice, that he ignores, of course. And when he finally escapes, taunting Polyphemus as he sails away? Athena’s cool with that. But that moment comes back to haunt him later, and he suffers for it.
And don’t even get me started on his moral compass, because Odysseus is not the golden hero we sometimes like to think he is. The fact that he gets the gods’ support doesn’t mean he’s this pure or noble figure. He lies, cheats, and manipulates people like it's his job. He spends a lot of time outwitting people and tricking them. Is that a hero? Technically, yes, but let’s remember that being smart and being good aren’t the same thing. Athena’s there for it, but she’s not exactly giving him a moral guidebook. This man lies as easily as he breathes! The gods are all part of Odysseus' journey, but their “favor” is nothing like the unalloyed support we might imagine. Instead, it’s a dance of manipulation, convenience, and power.
So, does Odysseus really have the gods' favor? In some ways, sure. But in the bigger picture, their favor is always conditional, always tied to their larger schemes. Athena may be the closest thing Odysseus has to a personal cheerleader, but even she has her own motives. Hermes is there for practical reasons, doing his job as a protector of travelers, while Zeus and Poseidon are constantly balancing Odysseus’ fate based on their own whims. The gods help Odysseus not because they’re all in love with him and want to see him triumph. They help him because they see him as a useful instrument. He’s useful to them, just as much as they are to him.
And if you think that divine favor means Odysseus is this saintly, perfect figure, then you’re completely missing the point of the Odyssey. He’s favored not because of some inherent goodness or divinity, but because he works the system better than anyone else. He outsmarts the gods, manipulates his own fate, and survives, but he doesn’t do it without paying a price. They favor him because he’s a fellow player in the messy, manipulative game of survival.
And that’s honestly the most terrifying thing about him: he’s not above the gods, and he knows it. He’s just like them.
Kinda how most of the gods’ favors work in mythology.

loyal to batjokes always but. poly bat+rouges though. batman/riddler/joker you could use a friend
#Plus I respect the fact that I'm pretty sure Riddler was the first Batman villain because he and Batman were both in DC comics together#and then I think when Batman got his own comic#that was when the Joker was introduced but like as officially his nemesis in Batman 1#but they weren't planning on keeping the Joker until the very last page where they decided to keep him#So honestly sometimes when I think of the jokers demise ultimately I kind of look towards Batman 1#because in the end it was Joker who killed himself? he was about to stab Batman but Batman moved and then he stabbed himself in the heart#and I really think that that blessed the narrative#I also think it was beautiful that they added the panel that he lived after all because he was still smiling#symbolically to me that represents Joker accepting and loving this role that he just lived that he knows he's going to continue to live#He's going to keep begging Batman to kill him but never actually getting him to do it#it's wonderful

Might be a hot take as a bkdk and tgck truther here, but I find izuocha endlessly fascinating, beautiful, but also tearfully tragic.
I see their love for each other as something representative of their innocence and naivety when they only knew so little about who they were, and what was to come.
I think the main barrier of their relationship is that its rooted in how they see each other very idealistically, specifically that they're attached to the image of their Best Heroic Selves, and not the deeply selfish, destructive, freaky, and egotistical parts of them. To each other, they need to keep fulfilling that image or else that same person they looked up to would almost die in front of them, and that would be too cruel. Although that hero is still there, that same person they looked up to is not the same now because of...well...everything.
Izuku had barely even talked to girls when he first met her. She was Izuku's first ever real friend (Sorry Kats, everyone and him knows he was terrible), so he saved her in that entrance exam even if it was so dangerous. She gave a new meaning to his derogatory nickname just by being a friend that believed in him. After that, she saved him several more times (Blackwhip and Megaphone are the biggest samples iirc). It makes perfect sense that she is Deku's hero.
Ochako hardly knew what it meant to be a hero when she first got into UA. Just by reaching out to some kid tripping, she made a new friend who would then save her in that exam, then save him again in return. This boy then became someone who was always working so hard to save everyone in trouble, and she realized she wanted to be just like him too. "I want to save people"
But...Deku changes. The weight of One for All is on his shoulders and he needs someone to carry this burden with him. He continues to want to save other people at the expense of himself, still not letting his true selfishness and ego ever show- and it only grows more and more unbearable.
Then...Ochako fell in love with Himiko. Truly, relentlessly, selfishly and devotedly in love with a girl who then dies giving her blood to her- the greatest expression of love Himiko could ever give.
Not that they can't love each other because of this happening (and...so many other things oh god), I'm honestly not sure how to explain it- But them ending up together after losing that innocence and naivety? After Ochako will forever grieve the girl who showed her love in its most beautiful and ugly form? After Izuku changed so fundamentally as a person that the butterflies of a nice girl talking to you doesn't exist anymore? After that simple image of being a hero and being in love has completely changed for them both?
Even so, I believe they still love each other. There is no label I know of that can properly describe them though. They are each other's image of being a hero when it comes to saving people. Aside from Shoto, no one else can grasp the grief of the person you tried to save dying in your hands. They would no doubt try to cope with these losses together, and just try to get better together...but so much has changed. They've changed. The world changed. What are they now? Who are they now?
"What happened...to us?"
#I just think the tragedy of falling out of love for the person who represents who they Used to be is so...so painful#Kacchan isn't even here yet and it's already so complicated.#also. Izch healing together after all this would also be really nice#if u like them ending up together thats also perfectly fine too. im just a bkdk and tgck truther myself. thats kinda my whole thing#but izch forming a deep bond from their experiences and saving eachother#and maybe later on trying to date too...oh boy#and them being able to just...be more casual again. talk abt their lives and dreams together too just so they know they have each other#oh itd be so healing and beautiful#im so glad izuku talked to ochako on that cliff man oh man...#izuocha the underrated tragic love that they could've been if ppl werent so close minded abt them#only the real izch fans understand just how much these two actually mean to each other. god bless yall I swear even if I dont ship ship it#thank u to that person who wrote abt them being characters than run in parallel#that narrative structure for them is permanently in my brain. I love these two so much its no joke#my Extra hot take is that izch wouldve been treated better by the fandom if it was gay.#but we'd still agree on bkdk as the endgame after all that happened. maybe. idk this is a hypothetical.#if you switch ock and kats genders...this wouldve been a very different story and fandom. insane food for thought with this one.#ok thats my yap for the night oh god i have so many feelings about them...#evelynpr bnha#bnha#mha#my hero academia#izuocha#actually confidently putting this tag now. sorry for the angst you guys...and maybe being seen as a traitor#im a strong girl I could take on potential haters hahaha...#izuku midoriya#ochako uraraka

THANK YOU OLI I don't get the season 8 hype. No Cas, Sam and Dean have the same conflict they've been having the entire show with no new angles like why????
YEAH LITERALLY. inital conflict is literally dean being angry at sam for trying to move on and heal which is just so intensely unlikeable and for some reason i was shocked by it and it made me genuinely dislike him. to me dean is at his most awful in s8..... like he's not. he's definitely not. gadreel possession in s9 and like most of s9/10 with the mark is much worse than anything he does in s8 and killing amy in s7 was sooo awful too. but dean is just so intensely a dick in s8 and i was so angry with him and not even in a fun way. like in s9/10 he is AWFUL but i enjoyed the drama. i didnt even enjoy the interpersonal drama in s8. which is when you know something is wrong
then again. im probably too harsh on it and am basing it off memories of sitting through the first half because i LOVE the trials and sacrifice and the great escapist so so much. and i love kevin <3 he's s8 right. but. to me s8 will always be the worst season. maybe i just hate what it brings to the shows canon. sam leaving dean for a girl and a dog (which is NOT EVEN WHAT HAPPENED... and if it WAS it wouldve been justified.... id support sam even if i thought he abandoned dean unprovoked idc.....) is constantly brought back like the worst of his sins even as late as like. s11. SHUT UP. first half of s8 is just upsetting for sam reasons and not in a fun way
#i was fully a dean hater for a while back in s8#i still love and support dean haters i just could never manage being one myself. god bless.#self recognition through the other (derogatory) but i would never pull his s8 shit at least#i just. HATE the whole. omg sam is in the wrong for trying to move on even though thats what he wanted dean to do while he was gone#and he thought its what dean would want because surely he would want sam to be happy (no he wanted sam to destroy his life looking for him)#and deans going to punish him for the evil crime of Wanting His Own Life and Getting Free and the narrative is also going to condemn him fo#this and its going to be treated like yet ANOTHER thing he needs to repent for. season four all over again except season four was really#fucking GOOD it was just emotionally devastating. s8 isnt even GOOD. the episodes were fucking boring half the time#tbf i also didnt like s6 very much because i hated the campbells being brought back so much i found it devastatingly boring#and apparently s6 and s8 are some of the most popular seasons. so. shrug#i preferred s10 a hell of a lot to both of them.. am i crazy..... s10 wasnt good but like. it was entertaining and i liked watching dean ge#worse and worse and it had rowena and claire and sure its thematically a mess but it was enjoyable to me. plus i liked the finale a lot#spn#s8#objectively i do actually think some of s8 is much better than anything else but emphasis on SOME#i find dean entirely uninteresting also when hes just Sooo sooooooooooo angry all the time unless its coming out in more interesting fucked#up possessiveness or hes actually killing people. so s8 dean was so boring#anyway. s8 haters of the world unite#asks#oliver talks

okay so with the naturalist done let's go a bit weird
1, 9, 24 and 25, for The Boatman.
1 - Why do you like or dislike this character?
The chess games you can play with him are really fun. I love how the difficulty organically builds up over time the further you go and the more your PC perishes- it really feels like you're slowly bonding with the guy, getting more comfortable with him, getting more comfortable with the Neath in general, etc etc. Even if the watchful checks are a bitch by the time you hit endgame.
Seriously, look at this! Look at the progression!! It's so charming. I love it so much. I may be losing in my boardgames but I am winning in my heart.
-
9 - Could you be roommates with this character?
Hell yeah!! The Scoundrel is already practically roommates given how much they've died already/die on a bi-weekly basis. I wouldn't mind a skeleton homie. He's a little... intense, but he's a cool guy. I think we could hang out together. Some time off that boat would definitely do him good.
-
24 - What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
I mean... pretty much any form of death/the grim reaper in any sort of media, really? He's pretty archetypal. If it's a skeleton representing death, it's reminiscent of him.
-
25 - What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
At first: eyy what's up my dude (fascinated by the new zone, passing 100% watchful checks with ease)
Now: EYYYY what's UP my dude (just chillin', failing a 63% watchful check 7 times in a row)
#yes im still doing these. yes im just slow lmao#ask#fallen london#i dont think about the boatman (original edition) much and we dont really know a lot about him as a Person. but i like the guy#death is a chipper fellow. and also apparently a bit spiteful if you pick certain evolution endings. but i like the guy anyway#the scoundrel's at... roughly 30-ish against the boatman by now? honestly im looking forward to hitting 40#even if it's only going to get more and more painful to win at chess#caeru's account is a blessing by comparison. despite everything to do with SMEN he's only died a few times so far#i cant wait to watch him get progressively worse at chess#sidenote while this ask is very obviously not about him. while on the subject of small organic progression stuff in FL#i really like how the high nightmares menace card just. naturally scales with your watchful#yes it's an Ordeal to deal with the manager and yes the scoundrel almost always has the walls are wrong burden#but i like it in semi-narrative-terms. it feels like you're adapting to the neath. in a way.#or maybe just losing it more and more#either way i just!! like it!!! even the upper river equivalent cards refer to the manager like he's an old acquaintance by now#and i just like that. i like the feeling of buildup it evokes#by the time you hit railway the boatman and the manager arent just menace guys. they're ur menace homies.#and optionally your fellow besties in card gaming if you picked heart's desire#idk. this probably makes no sense and im rambling incoherently for no reason like i seem to always do with FL asks#tldr; i like the funny menace guys

Someone posted a screenshot of this post on Twitter and it seems that many fans over there seem to be thoroughly ticked off over this take. (And like holy shit, a lot of people have seen it???)
Honestly, I'm taking this as a win. Those folks clearly don't know how to have fun with the media they consume and do not posses the ability to read the narrative in different and interesting ways. Whether that be shipping or not. I use shipping to analyze dynamics. It makes it more fun to engage with media when you look at it from different angels.
Like "I need to bleach my eyes," or "People like this need to get off the internet" or "Incorrect buzzer!" or whatever else people have said, like, who called the fun police, what the hell are you doing in fandom spaces if you can't have fun with it???
But as I have never truly experience hate on this scale before (and honestly, I am a little overwhelmed) it kind of just reinforces all my beliefs that some people refuse to let people who engage with stuff in a different way to them be, without having to loudly declare either their negative opinions or having to make sure they fit in with the masses or else the holy gospel that is Twitter will come to deliver justice.
Anyway, I might just write a follow up to this post out of spite explaining my thought process to each of the parings and how it relates to the canon material in the books along with what went unexplored.
Heroes of Olympus is just Leo being in love with Jason, who is in love with Nico, who is in love with Percy, who is in love with Annabeth, who is in love with Piper, who is in love with Reyna, who is in love with Hazel, who is in love with Frank, who is in love with Leo.
#The amount of people who are mad is insane#Bless Tumblr I am so glad I'm not on Twitter#All I've seen just indicates that being on that website is a strictly negative experience#Anyway I'm gonna keep narratively analyzing these characters from different perspectives#occasionally in the form of shipping while those folks bitch about it :)#Like I never said you had to ship this??? Or that this was canon???#Heck I don't ship this not really#I just find the dynamics of the paired up characters fascinating and want to go into them more specifically because of the way they#weren't in the books#Oh and I've read the books many times and am not all that interested in the actual romantic aspects I just find narrative parallels and#dynamics fascinating to explore#I even agree that the Reyna once are a long shot I just wanted her to be included#I'm honestly a bit concerned that some people want to expel those who thing differently than them off the internet when the way of thinkin#is completely harmless???#Like. I genuinely think that's something people might have to introspect about.

Occultists, witches and spiritualists really need to stop peddling the lie that spirituality, witchcraft, paganism, etc. isn’t a psychological phenomenon as well as a mystical one. Your psychology will in fact, fundamentally inform your experiences with spirituality.
And we also need to stop pretending that spirituality and witchcraft are somehow contrary to mental illness. Or that having a mental illness means you can’t do witchcraft.
I’ll be completely honest with you guys and say that certain people with certain afflictions are more predisposed to different “mystical” experiences than others. I don’t think it’s a great coincidence that I am so great at visualization given that I was raised in a severely neglectful household. It doesn’t surprise me that many pagans are lonely people. This doesn’t mean to say that spirituality is “filling” a hole within anyone (although if it is, that’s great for you) but more so that, well, this path is unpopular for a reason. Alternative subcultures are alternative for a reason, and outcasts and rejects usually find a home there for a reason.
This also doesn’t mean to say that people who engage in witchcraft and spiritualism are inherently mentally ill. There is still a difference between hallucinations and spiritual encounters. And there was never any rule that said that both of these things cannot happen to a single person. For the safety of yourself and others we should be aware of the warning signs of dissociation and hallucination, but that doesn’t make anyone “wrong” for experiencing those things. And experiencing those things doesn’t mean you cannot explore spirituality or do witchcraft.
I hate it when “spiritualists” who are actually just anti-vax conservatives push the narrative that people with mental health issues cannot participate in spirituality. I also despise the notion that mental health issues are inherently a sign of an energetic imbalance. We’re all walking around with a special concoction of brain soup in our heads, it doesn’t surprise me that Ares devotees tend to have BPD, that many Aphrodite devotees struggle with self harm, that many people who work with angels have paranoia or generalized anxiety.
There was never any rule that said that you cannot use your deities or magic to help you cope with your mental health. I know some people will say “the Gods aren’t here to be your friend or hold your hand through life” but I’ve seen no evidence to suggest that’s true. I see no reason why a God like Ares couldn’t help his devotee with BPD come down after a bout of rage, I see no reason why Dionysus couldn’t help his devotee with their alcoholism or substance abuse, I see no reason why Aphrodite couldn’t help a devotee with relapse or negative self talk.
Witchcraft and paganism were historically used as a tool for survival, to bring people ease, to help people feel safe and secure, blessed and protected. That applied to all people, including those with mental health issues.

life series curses
another thing I find so interesting about the life series is the idea that every character in the games are cursed in some way. I know there are the obvious ones, canary curse, black widow curse, etc, but I feel like the idea of the watchers locking them in the games with their own curses to be so interesting. It really adds to the feel that a) they are all extremely unique characters with their own things going on and b) they are all in their own way doomed by the narrative as I really like thinking about the fact that the life series is inherantly a tragedy.
as for what curses I think everybody has, the obvious/well known canonical ones are of course:
Jimmy - Canary curse: probably the most famous curse in the life series, Jimmy is cursed to always be the first to die
Grian - Black Widow curse: grian always ends up betraying his teamates or being the cause of their deaths (killed scar in TL, jimmy & mumbo in LL, Scar again in DL, Jimmy in LimL)
Mumbo - Miners curse: always is the next to die after the canary, within a minute of jimmys death.
Scott: Sacrifice Blessing - only one to not exactly be a curse, his teamates will always make it top 3 but he will sacrifice his lives to do so.
Skizzleman: Bad Angel - always tries to help his friends but has legendarily bad luck and loses a lot of lives
Tango: Ash Curse - will always die by himself in a pathetic and underwhelming way (I call it the ash curse because I like the idea of him not dying in a blaze of glory but instead burning out, leaving nothing but a small pile of ashes)
Joel: Insanity Curse/Red Fever - will always end the series by going insane and trying to kill everybody
And then there are the curses I dont think Ive heard many people talk about:
Scar: Villain curse - Scar is cursed to always become enemies with almost everybody, usualy being isolated in a small corner of the map by himself
Cleo: Retribution Curse - will be betrayed by a teamate leading to them swearing vengeance and lashing out in anger (BigB, Martyn)
Ren: Last Stand Curse - dies alone in his own home trying to defend it
Etho: Loyalty Curse - will make a teamate at the very begining and stick with them the whole way through, though in the end his loyalty to them will lead to his death
Martyn: Betrayal Curse - will always plan or attempt to kill his teamate
Bdubs: Wierdly enough also the Betrayal Curse. just the exact same curse Martyn has. I dont know what this means
BigB: Isolation Curse - will always end up living on his own or seperate from the rest of the server
Pearl: Duel Curse: always dies (or wins) in an orginazed duel or battle, usualy including or orginized by Scott
Gem: hasnt been in the series long enough to have a recognizable curse, though she does have the boogeyman curse from secret life.
Lizzie: Failed Avenger Curse: when turning red will try to take revenge on the people who she believed wronged her, but will fail misserably and die trying

I'm powering through most of ASC: Star to get it over with (and planning to summarize all my thoughts in one big post instead of a liveread), but this part of the Curlfeather/Frostpaw interaction sticks out like a thorn to the point where I need to comment on it alone.
For context, Frostpaw is on her deathbed and this is the moment where she's having a very important, culminating argument with her mother about her motivations.
The writers decided that their thesis is that StarClan itself is what really makes the Clan cats warriors-- not necessarily an unchanging Warrior Code. The law might change, but unwavering faith in their religion will keep their morality straight through such times. Through Frostpaw and Curlfeather, this is is the point in the story where the narrative has to prove this. Or at least make a compelling argument in its case.
Problem is...
Frostpaw's sentiment here, that Curlfeather wouldn't have been able to get legitimacy as a leader, is just factually wrong.
StarClan has been shown to have absolutely no power to deny cats lives. They're also completely incapable of pointing out "illegitimate leaders" to the living cats.
Brokenstar and Tigerstar were already murderers who had eliminated political rivals when StarClan gave them "their blessing." They also completely refused to give Nightstar any lives, when they're shown to be capable of "life-splitting" in the case of Pinestar's successor, Sunstar. It goes back and forth between being "unable" and "unwilling" to influence the mortal plane, but the bottom line is consistently that they can't do shit.
This whoooooole book was also about how Splashstar, who also didn't accept the extra lives, was able to keep control over a frustratingly compliant RiverClan. You sit through entire chapters of RiverClan cats whining about Just Following Orders and the main characters being washed in pity at how hard of a situation they must be in. Curlfeather is demonstrated to be a hypocrite; but if RiverClan HAD followed the Warrior Code and killed Splashstar in "self-defense" like it stipulates, or moved to prevent the kits from suffering at his hands like it says, then she's correct.
The Warrior Code, as a system of laws, IS actually what makes them a proper society... at least, in this atomized fantasy where Clans aren't communities with a sense of interpersonal duty towards one another, but instead dedicated to process and pride.
Don't misunderstand me; Curlfeather herself as a character claims that what was bad about RiverClan, and needed to "change," was that they'd started caring about other Clans under Mistystar. This is nonsensical and clearly wrong; Mistystar was only slightly less isolationist than Onestar, and every time she'd helped another Clan was a good thing. It did not make them "weak," being a more "traditionalist" leader wouldn't make them "strong."
What I'm getting at is that her wider point, in the debate about Law vs Faith and which one truly makes a cat a Warrior, is supported by the entire arc. Faith in StarClan didn't stop any of this from happening, but a better sense of honor sure as hell would have.
I didn't think it was possible for them to make me more anti-StarClan after they enabled Ashfur's hostile takeover of ThunderClan in the last arc, but here we are.
#Take a shot every time wc unironically invokes the Nuremberg Defense#that famously rejected legal defense that at best reduces the punishment and never exonerates#the first guy who used that defense got his head cut off. btw.#this arc is sending me back to my edgy teenage atheist phase#ohhhh mat dillahunty we're really in it now#asc spoilers#bones reads asc#Warrior Cats Analysis#If I had to use a single word to describe this book. it would be Frustration.#BEHOLD! AN ARC THAT WILL MAKE YOU HATE RIVERCLAN.

part one next part idea: @floydsfae tags: @ilovejeansosomuch. @spikedfearn (inspired by) summary: Parting ways with a friend group was always hard, somehow trying to rejoin that group was even harder. Especially when a particular quick-tempered someone is rather bitter about your choices. warnings/tags: lots of swearing. friends to enemies to lovers. Bjorn is a bitter and jealous shit. angst a/n: I'm not very familiar with the Alien franchise so forgive me if there are any inaccuracies. This is my first Tumblr post and I'm not used to writing in the second-person narrative so sadly this is not my best work but I still hope you like it. “Fuck no.” That was your only answer before you covered yourself with your blanket and sank even deeper into your messy bed.
“Come on, Y/n!.” The muffled voice of your friend, Kay reached your ears under the blanket before she started to pull it away from you.
“Leave me alone.” You whined while trying to hold onto the covers until eventually Kay gave up
She sighed and sat next to you on the bed. “This is gonna be good for us.” She tried to reason. “You think that idiot was your way out? This is the way out.! She shook you a bit under the covers to make sure you were actually listening.
You rolled over, unsure if she actually believed in this nonsense or was that desperate to leave Jackson’s Star. You wouldn’t blame her if she was.
You stared at her for a long moment, brows furrowed. “Who had this idea in the first place?” You asked, surprised that anyone would think this would work.
“Tyler and Navarro. They said they pick-”
“Tyler and Navarro? Damn, they are really getting desperate.” You cut her off with a scoff.
“So, are you,” Kay added.
You couldn’t deny it.
You were tired. Tired of living the same day over and over again. Wake up at 6 am to the same darkness that followed you the entire day, get ready by 6:30 am, and begin your walk to the bus station to take the overcrowded bus that drove all of the workers to the mines.
Thankfully you were able to be transferred to the kitchen, away from the cramped caves. And as sad as it sounded, that was the only good thing that happened to you in a while.
You didn’t know if it was that or the resentful feeling of your fresh breakup but you let Kay pull you out of your bed and push you into the shower. You just knew you wanted to change this overwhelming routine of the past two months.
As soon as you got dressed, the girl led you through the busy, dimply-lit streets and toward an alleyway where the rest of the crew would wait for you.
You didn't know how to feel about this reunion. You haven't really seen them in a while, spending most of your time with your now ex-boyfriend. You were surprised they even included you in this ‘mission’. You figured it was probably Kay and Tyler, possibly Navarro too.
You turned around and were greeted by the figures of your old friends, Tyler and Bjorn.
When they met your nervous stare, you noticed Tyler’s expression mirrored yours even if it was for a split second. He quickly concealed his uncertainty with a smile that reached his eyes.
“Hey, Y/n. How have you been?” Tyler chuckled and pulled you into a hug, startling you a bit but soon enough you returned the affection
“Fine, I guess—” You began but before you could continue a different voice echoed in the empty alleyway, accent thick and tone dripping with accusation.
“We weren’t sure if you'd bless us with your ladyship.”
Of course, it was no other than Bjorn who would make a comment like this. He earned a glare from Tyler but he just shrugged s as if he was just making conversation.
An annoyed smile tugged at your lips as you spoke “Seems like you didn't change. Like at all.”
Bjorn ignored your comment and turned to Kay. “If she's all caught up, we should go.”
You raised your eyebrow at the way he brushed you off but you decided to let it go. “What about Navarro, Rain, and Andy?” You asked.
“Navarro’s fixing some other parts of the ship and Rain is—” Tyler paused for a moment, sending a glance at his half-sister. You followed his eyes but Kay just smiled at you “Busy with her job,” Tyler ended up saying.
“Is Rain all right?” You asked, chuckling a bit at their failed attempt to cover the truth.
“You’d know if you weren’t too busy snogging your boyfriend every chance you got,” Bjorn remarked with a smug smirk. You could feel your blood boiling at the mention of your ex.
“Bjorn! We talked about this.” Tyler warned the boy but he just scoffed.
“What? She was gone for two months and now acts all worried! That’s a load of bollocks!” He argued, gesturing towards you with a huff.
“Oh, fuck off, Bjorn!” You raised your voice over Tyler who was about to cuss his cousin out. This was already hard enough but having Bjorn act like a massive asshole wasn’t something you were going to sit through.
You did abandon them. You were a bitch, and a bad friend, and whatever this asshat wanted to call you but you didn’t need to hear it, especially from Bjorn out of all people.
You just wanted to have a better life, at least as good as it could get in this shitty colony. A future to look forward to and Noa made it look possible. He had ambition and connections and could easily get a better job than most of the Jackson Star residents. At the time you were stupid enough to believe that he wouldn’t drop you. Yet, as soon as he bagged a job in the ‘Office of Colony Affairs’ he dumped you because, in his words, you had ‘different life goals.’
Fuck. And fuck him, and Bjorn and whoever dared to call you a whore or an opportunist. All of you had the same life goals, get the fuck out of here. That’s why you were here. As crazy as this plan sounded, at least you would be doing something to get away from this place.
“I’m not going to apologize for wanting something better for myself!” You snapped.
Bjorn ran his tongue over his teeth, letting out a low chuckle to hide his irritation “So you dropped everyone to get that.” He stated before he met your eyes once more. You didn’t know what you saw in his gaze but it wasn’t simply anger.
“I didn’t drop any of you!” You began, throwing your hands in frustration. “I kept in touch with Kay and Navarro. I asked about all of you! If you weren’t such a dick you’d realize that you made it difficult to talk to you!”
Bjorn remained quiet as if he was trying to come up with a comeback. He tore his gaze away from you when he turned around and mumbled “Whatever.”
“We should really get going now,” Kay spoke nervously, more to Tyler than anyone else.
“Yeah, let’s go.” Tyler agreed noticeably glad that the fight would come to an end, for now at least.
You sent Bjorn one last glare before following Kay and Tyler, but he didn't look all that affected.
The walk to the abandoned warehouse was rather long. A couple of years ago it was busy with workers and clients, mostly to buy components for mining haulers and gear. But right now it was collecting dust and vines so it was the perfect place to get some forgotten parts and tools.
Tyler helped Kay jump over the tall fence while you and Bjorn were already on the other side. You smiled at the sweet moment between the siblings trying to ignore the panging feeling in your chest.
You tried to ignore the intense need you had to glance at the boy next to you but you couldn’t help it. His gaze was fixated on the tall building, holding the cigarette between his fingers. You tried to push away the bitter feeling that cursed through you.
It wasn’t that long ago that he helped you the same way, finding any excuse to feel your skin under his fingertips.
But that was just a childish game you two developed. Flirting jokingly, touching a bit more than necessary to see the other’s cheeks redden and hear your friends groan in disgust. Both of you comfortably balanced on the rope between friendly banter and romantic curiosity.
When both Kay and Tyler landed on the other side of the fence, you began walking toward the building.
You stepped inside and an aerie breeze hit you, from the way Kay started to rub her shoulders you guessed the rest felt the same.
“Bloody hell…” Bjorn mumbled as he walked to the front desk which was covered in dust and some dead bugs.
“Yeah, that’s nasty.” Kay agreed, keeping close to you and Tyler.
“I’ll go check the first floor, someone should check the second,” Tyler announced the plan, staring at the sketch of the parts Novarro drew him.
The group was surrounded by silence, the four of you looking at each other awkwardly until Kay decided to make it easier for all of you. “I can go with Bjorn.” She said cheerily trying to ignore the tension.
“Good, Y/n we’ll go together” Tyler nodded toward you and started walking up the stairs.
Bjorn's loud voice stopped both of you in your tracks. Bjorn tried to sound uninterested even amused as he spoke “I see, you act all tough yet can’t even spend five minutes alone with me. Scared I’ll hurt your feelings, innit?” The way those last words fell out of his lips in such a pitying manner really struck a nerve.
You knew what he was doing. He was baiting you. You saw him do it to everyone, although you weren’t sure if Andy even could understand that he did it just to annoy him.
Still, you weren’t one to give him the satisfaction. You let out a dry chuckle as you rolled your eyes. “Bjorn and I are going to check the second floor” You declared, not bothering to turn around.
“I can go with Y/n?” Kay tried to intervene but neither you nor Bjorn listened as you walked up the stairs.
“Remember, in and out! Be quick.” You heard Tyler’s voice bounce off the walls as you continue your path to the second floor, Bjorn hot in your trail.
You entered a room as soon as you reached the second floor. By the numerous boxes and shelves filled with dirty items, this was clearly one of the storage rooms
“You search the right side, I'll search the left side,” You said when you noticed Bjorn still walking behind you.
“Don’t tell me what to do” He quickly retorted.
You let out an exasperated sigh and walked to the right side instead, ignoring his snarkiness.
Neither of you talked for a long while, putting equipment that seemed useful in your bags or simply looking through the dusty machinery.
Bjorn was the first to break the uncomfortable silence “So how are things with your boyfriend.” You didn’t miss the way his tone changed to a mocking one at the word ‘boyfriend’ but you chose to ignore it.
You stayed quiet for a moment, not sure if you wanted to answer. “We don’t have to talk.”
“Come on, I’m trying to be nice.” He spoke over the loud noise of his hand rummaging through some drawers and you could practically hear his smirk.
A groan managed to slip past your lips before you said “We broke up.”
You heard Bjorn’s movements come to a halt momentarily followed by a breathy laugh. “Can’t say I'm surprised you dumped that twat.”
You remained silent once again only saying a drawn-out “Yeah”
“Wait a fucking minute.” Bjorn laughed, walking closer to you, a smug smirk spreading on his face “He dumped you!”
The amusement in his voice made your anger flare up once again causing your face to contort in irritation but you tried to ignore it and just get the job done, practically slamming the drawer shut.
“Why did he dump you? Did he find someone that matched his status? He did get promoted to a whole-ass desk job” He snorted.
You tried to be calm, you really did but all of it was so recent “Can you just shut the fuck up for once in your life?” You exploded, making his eyes leave the shelves and focus on you. “Is it really so funny that I was dumped?”
Bjorn stared at you for a long moment, before turning to continue searching. Obviously not without a sarcastic comment. “It’s funny that he dumped you but sorry, didn’t know you were so in love.”
You closed your eyes and exhaled through your nose to try and keep your cool. “As if you know what love is?” You tried to keep your voice from shaking with anger.
Bjorn met your scowl once again but to your surprise, his expression didn’t match yours. Unlike yours, his eyes didn’t hold any rage but something that made you unable to look away as he moved closer to you, looming above you.
“I know you two weren’t.” The low tone in his voice had you breathless for a moment.
Does it even matter if you loved Noa? Falling in love was never the point.
“You don’t know anything” You spat out, your voice as intense.
He raised his eyebrow at your words, staring down into your eyes “Really?” He dragged out the word. “You were in love with that asshat? You really want me to believe that?”
“I don’t care what you believe, that’s none of your fucking business.” You bit back, taking a step closer. You wanted to remain unbothered by how the corner plush lips tugged up but the warmth that spread through your cheeks was impossible to ignore.
“You’re not answering my question.” The almost gentleness in his voice quickly disappeared as he laughed, his breath hitting your face. His fingers slowly reached up to flick a strand of your hair mockingly.
You were about to slap away his hand when you heard Kay’s voice from the corridor.
“Guys, where are you?” She shouted.
“Uh—we’re here Kay” You yelled back, stepping back from Bjorn. You really didn’t notice how close you two were standing.
Soon enough Kay’s figure appeared in the doorframe.
“Glad to see you didn’t kill each other” She joked. “We found the thing Navarro needed, we can go.” She announced.
You hated how your eyes met Bjorn’s even if it was for a second, and you hated the feeling that erupted in your stomach even more.

hello mr ware, the siltcord has been discussing and so i would like to ask if you have any notes/thoughts on speculative biology or ecology in the world of the silt verses?
Howdy! That's a really fun question and I think my only note for anyone playing or imagining within the setting would be to run riot with it. (Because we're talking about a million different accelerated and highly localised evolutionary triggers compared to our world, right? What does happen to the fish swimming downriver from an automobile plant dedicated to a god of oil, coal and gas? What god are the bees worshipping when they construct their vast golden cathedrals, what blessings manifest in their swarms, and what happens if a hive grows large enough? Back in Season 1, we mention that something with a beautiful siren song joins the birds in the branches - how would the birds ultimately be changed by that and become its evangelists?)
I think there's a ton of inherent possibility in speculative biology and ecology if you want to get into the margins of the setting, even as a discipline - I wonder how brave and hardened you'd need to be to put on a pair of waders and head into the wilds trying to chart all of these localised mutations. But it's the sort of thing you need to be really cautious about within a compressed and discrete narrative - the more weird background detail you introduce, the more gonzo and alien the setting becomes, the more we lose the sense of familiar drabness and closeness to our world.
In other words, we barely touched it but it's out there as an idea and I think it's awesome.
PS: Apropos of nothing, a little while back I was reading Cuckoo by Gretchen Falker-Martin, who repeatedly introduces 'ghostly phlox' as a strange background detail of her desert landscape. It's such a wonderful choice because despite having a beautiful meaning, the name of the flower itself is fleshy, lumpen and weird. PHLOX. It sounds alien and wrong. I guess the tie-in is that if we'd done more with ecology in the show, it'd have been about looking for elements like that which are unobtrusively off but off nonetheless.

i was really excited to read this but it sucked i stopped ¾ of the way through lol i was hoping it'd get better or culminate to something interesting
fic so good it's triggering
#five counts of dean centrism/fundamental misunderstanding of his and sam's relationship especially re: john#many of those counts involving fanon!dean#three counts of fundamentally misunderstanding sam's character as portrayed through the author's non-connection of the fic concept#to the canon material it could have been connected to and instead making stuff up to fill in that fanfiction-narrative blank#as in‚ my own interpretation of the main concept also doesn't line up with the author's#and i think theirs lacks the canon evidence that exists and could have been used#generally writing pre-series stuff in a way that connects to the presentness of canon is always going to be tricky#and while this has a lot of good ideas‚ it ignores so much of canon lmfao#it's the little stuff. like this is a fic centred around an ocd headcanon and it makes no mention of the trials#(or even sam's 8.21 monologue)‚ the 9.08 conversation or any of the demon blood/azazel/special child arcs#and yet it made up a pre-series story about john drunkenly telling sam he's a danger?? it includes sam meeting jessica in his first year#when it's canonically established that they met in sophomore year. ive mentioned this above but dean changing diapers at five years old‚#the dean went to the bus stop with sam headcanon + the dean and sam spoke during college headcanon#there are a lot of dean scenes that makes the fic feel like it's a dean fic from sam's ocd!pov#overall it feels like a fic written by someone who has made a sam monsterfucking post#edit: it was a really well written fic with a very surface level knowledge/understanding of sam's character#so i went to look at their other works hoping i'd like something else and they've only ever written d/c fic otherwise god fucking bless#adnotatio

what the f%#$ does ____ mean on that stupid ass ship chart
saw a few questions, so ask (the air) and ye shall receive.
top section
"describe their vibe" — you can interpret this at will. it's just a space to put whatever you think encapsulates the vibes of their dynamic/them as a relationship. it can be like a list of tropes, a dumb tweet screenshot, some other type of image, anything really.
everything else should be straightforward lmao.
rest of the shit below the cut so i don't take up your dash space.
continuums section
"repressed vs (sexually) open" — as it sounds. repressed as in like they're a prude or open as in they're down to bang on the regular.
"no libido vs terminally horny" — not horny to very horny lmao
"aggressively romantic vs allergic to PDA" — kinda like how private the character is/how embarrassed are they by the notion of displays of romance. do they prefer lowkey displays of romance or are they dramatic about it?
"(severely) mentally ill vs mentally stable" — fairly self-explanatory. are they full of mental problems or are they actually mentally sound?
"kms'ing over being in love vs blushing giggling twirling hair" — pretty much their reaction to being in love, specifically with the other person. do they hate the fact they love the other person, or are they super giddy that they're in love?
"doomed by the narrative vs blessed by the narrative" — it's a little open to interpretation but my usage of it for individual use is like how fucked over by the canon events are they individually? (if the relationship's doomed, they're probably both on the doomed end; if the relationship ISN'T doomed but one was severely fucked over by the story's events, then they could be in the doomed section while the other one could be hovering elsewhere)
"big spoon vs little spoon" — self-explanatory. it's cuddle time. who's the big spoon, who's the little spoon.
"the weapon vs the wielder" — ngl, this continuum may not actually work too well for some healthier ships, but the general vibe of it is like the weapon is the one who tends to do things at the wielder's behest. the weapon is commonly more of a warrior type, more of the "protector" (and may also have self-worth issues), while the wielder is the one that typically gets protected, may have a great deal of importance for some reason, and is sort of the "user" of the weapon. you're more than welcome to make your own interpretations of it lmao
the pyjamas — based on this image: (who's the sleepy old man with the candle that goes snork mimimimi vs the beautiful wife who's likely also a damsel in distress)
"jealous vs chill" — should be fairly self-explanatory, but like is the person chill with their partner, or do they easily get jealous when the attention isn't on them?
"has zero game vs insane game" — are they bitchless or can they pull bitches? regardless of charisma (or lack thereof), can they actually get laid or not
"functional vs soggy loser" — are they a functional member of society with their shit together or are they born-in-a-wet-cardboard-box, perpetually soggy, capital P Pathetic?
the other shit
"what brings them together?" — what are some reasons that this ship actually has grounds? what do they have going for their relationship?
"what is keeping them/kept them apart?" — were/are there any reasons why they haven't just kissed yet? what are those reasons?
"poorly describe their meetcute" — describe how they met but be funny about it.
"list their reductive fandom tropes/fandom appeal" — reasons why people might ship them or like the ship. (e.g. enemies to lovers, angel and demon dichotomy, etc.)
"who's the armrest?" — two guys. one likes to turn the other into an armrest by sticking their arm on the other's shoulder (or something; done possibly with the intent to annoy). who's the one that's being used as the armrest more often?
"who's the headrest?" — two guys. one puts their head on the other more frequently. who's the one that's more often turned into a head rest?
"who fell first?" — who fell in love first?
"who fell harder?" — who fell in love harder?
"who cooks" — should be obvious lmao
"who cleans up more messes?" — can be literal messes, or who more often deals with the fallout of the bullshit one of them gets up to.
"who's the bigger yearner?" — who yearns more?
"who confessed first?" — should be literal.
touch
should be fairly self-explanatory, but it's kinda like what is or isn't off limits to contact of any form from the other person. say character A is entirely red while character B is entirely purple. A is allergic to any form of contact anywhere from B, while B fucking loves anything from A.

Hello! Wanted to say that I’ve really enjoyed your analysis on Aventurine’s theming - and yea big agree that part of the charm of the guy is that he’s a weird paradox (he got everything one should technically want, and he also lost absolutely everything he cares about) - and also I like your comment that he is, as a character, actually pretty obnoxious (it’s an odd character charm point to me)
Also your post on the way he interacts with the ladies in the cast kinda reminded me - I know folks tend to focus in Ratio’s note but I ended up zoning in on his convo with Acheron more than anything else - because a lot of Penacony is Aven butting heads with other aeon-touched people (Acheron, Sunday) - but Acheron seems like a fun foil because she also has a pretty double-edged metaphysical blessing that is associated with losing everything she loved, but she ironically hasn’t given in to full meaninglessness.
I think one of Aventurine's defining character traits is that he "tests" everyone he encounters to judge whether they are trustworthy or whether they are a danger to him (I guarantee you, he has some kind of mental ranking scale for how likely people are to dislike or mistreat him), and I think his being obnoxious is actually a direct offshoot of this.
Kakavasha clearly was raised with manners; he knows how to be polite and to tone down his responses to social situations as appropriate, which means that, in every other scenario, he is actively choosing to be obnoxious, even in situations where it seemingly won't benefit him (like talking back to the slave master or being too forward when first meeting Sunday, for example) because it allows him to gauge exactly how others feel about him and exactly how much they will let him get away with.
People who play along are potential allies (Robin, the Trailblazer) and people who act grumpy but actually tolerate the obnoxiousness are safe (Ratio, Sparkle, most of the rest of the Express Crew), while people who respond poorly (Sunday, basically everyone else Aventurine dealt with in the past, etc.) are forced into showing their true colors. If minor obnoxious behaviors can provoke them, then it means their core response to Aventurine is likely to be one of dislike and disrespect. He's just forcing that response from them out into the light sooner, rather than later, by being obnoxious from the get-go.
(And, to a certain extent, I think he also just finds it fun to be a bit obnoxious. Like, he's free to say and do whatever he wants now--who is going to stop him from being a brat if that's what he feels like doing?)
But on to Acheron... Yes, I do think there are a lot of parallels between Acheron and Aventurine (came from a doomed people, lost everyone, both determined to hold out against nihility and live just for the sake of living, "blessed" by aeons), but I think narratively speaking, the story puts Acheron in a different position when her tale entangles with Aventurine's: the surrogate big sister role.
Acheron's a very good parallel to Aventurine's sister in numerous ways: First, she essentially sacrificed herself to defeat the evil threatening her people, but is ultimately unsuccessful, resulting in the permanent loss of all she knew.
This loss also resulted in Aventurine's sister actually dying, while Raiden Mei experienced a symbolic death, taking on the name "Acheron" to evoke the Underworld, getting a ghostly, bleached white form, and prowling the river of nihility like a wandering spirit of the dead.
Second, the philosophy Acheron espouses is nearly identical to Aventurine's sister. When even as a child Kakavasha was doubting the value and meaning of life, his sister was the one constantly reaffirming that life has meaning, despite its hardships, and that continuing to exist is the way to honor those who have sacrificed for you. Just as Aventurine's sister expresses that people must hold on to faith, Acheron reminds everyone she encounters to cling to the last bit of color and light in their lives.
This ends up being echoed by the role of guidance that she plays for Aventurine, with him both directly relying on her for his continued survival:
And turning to her in his moment of greatest emotional need:
(Sound familiar? It should. This is the exact same question Kakavasha once asked his sister.)
But there's also a very, very nice visual parallel that goes on with Acheron and Aventurine's sister: the dusk rain that accompanies her.
For Aventurine, the rain has complicated emotional connotations. For the Avgin, it was desperately needed, life-giving water, and thus was considered a direct blessing from Gaiathra. Rain on Aventurine's birthday was the sign of his being favored by the aeon, and yet it also rained on the day he lost everything and had to flee from the only home he had ever known (conveniently also his birthday, dude this guy's life sucks).
Meanwhile, the rain for Acheron is equally complex--rain can bring life, the renewal of barren, lifeless lands... But we also see the rain accompany Acheron through her worst loss, the final collapse of her planet:
It also is said to rain constantly within the shadow of nihility, a lightless gray that washes away all that people wish to cling to.
For both Acheron and Aventurine's sister, the rain accompanies the end of their "lives," the backdrop to their ultimate sacrifices.
Yet it is also in the rain that they both send Aventurine onward, escaping from the cage of his destiny into a "better" life. From beneath the shadow of the storm, they both bid him to go and not turn back, freeing him and permanently changing the course of his life.
The rain that took everything from both Aventurine's sister and Acheron is ultimately what saves him.
It's all a very tidy and well-written parallel.

Rayla as Callum's Deepest Truth - what does that mean? :: Or Truth in S6
Season six of The Dragon Prince talks a lot about truth.
It's a sentiment at least mentioned in almost every episode, and in a show featuring secrets, unreliable narrators, and characters routinely keeping information from or divulging information to one another, it's an accordingly complicated concept for both the characters and the show's broader narrative.
Thereby, we're going to start with the most straight forward associations in the season, beginning with Callum's plot line in 6x06 and the scene itself, and then work backwards through the various other aspects that contribute to both initial and more layered readings of the concept that we can extrapolate from other aspects / relationships the season explores through truth.
Let's begin.
Truth as Light and Love
The first and simplest readings of Rayla as Callum's Truth is that she is Light ("How do I find this light?" / "the one deep truth so bright it can fill the darkness") and Love. This isn't really a stretch, given that seeing and embracing Star Rayla causes a bright light to shine literally in canon, and successfully fill the hole in Callum's spirit with light and purify him of darkness. This also pulls on the most straight forward associations from Rayla and light in prior seasons.
We see this reflected in Janai and Amaya's blessing of the sun at their wedding—a request for "love and light"—and in their discussions with one another in 6x02. Amaya assures her that Janai can still fix what is broken for her people (put a pin that idea of broken + fixing for later) so long as she doesn't try to do it alone. Janai affirms this through her understanding of "The King with 1000 Eyes" story, stating that much like in the tale's pair of lovers, Amaya is also:
While this doesn't necessitate the idea of Truth as being romantic love for an individual, this line is one of the biggest reasons going into 6x06 that I thought maybe Rayla would end up being his Deepest Truth. This is also partially because they refer back to the idea of light and fixing, directly stating that "there is a way to fix it" through the star-light ritual, and we see this idea again with Rayla in 6x09 with Runaan.
Rayla was always set up to be Callum's alternative path in opposition to Aaravos as well (though again, we'll get to that specific path motif more later) through the framing of light. It's unsurprising then that in opposition to both metaphorical and literal darkness
we get Rayla and his love for her being a literal light.
These are the most straight forward, positive sides of Truth that we see, and the ones I think (mostly) that 6x06 plays most overtly, though there are others as well that we'll get to in a second. This is also the most straightforward the series has been about 'darkness = bad' and 'light = good' as well, even if there are always exceptions to every rule (which we'll get to later as well).
Light and love and Rayla can fix what is broken. She can save you. She can restore you. Her, and your love for her, leads you out of the darkness. Mends you. Makes you whole again.
That's some powerful stuff, especially as a basic surface level reading. (For a less than surface level one with this similar theme of broken and fixing, you can read this meta regarding Leola and Rayla.)
With that under our belts, I want to take this basis of "the Truth (Rayla) as love and light" to explore how it leads naturally into the final Rayla and Callum scene of the episode, featuring
Truth as Clarity
We've gone over light, and we'll go over purpose, but for now I want to talk about the idea of truth as clarity. To have clarity is to have a better sense of the reality of things, a founded understanding of a situation or person. The Celestial elves seek clarity through the "true light of the heavens." The clarity Callum receives in realizing and finding that Rayla is his one truth causes him to finally take the next step and begin their relationship fully again by kissing her, and by confessing his love to her.
Clarity is also derived from the basis of knowing, however—"Hold to what you've always known [...] the answer in your heart is clear / I am near, my love is here"—of knowing that is the truth. Of seeing clearly, of seeing someone, truly for who they are and loving them.
RAYLA: Why didn't you tell me? CALLUM: Cause I know you, Rayla. If I'd told you, you would've refused to go, because you never do anything for yourself.
He loves her because he knows her ("That's what makes her a hero. That's what makes her Rayla" / "She's not 'the elf'. She's Rayla") and he knows her because he loves her, because he understands her ("And I understand why you couldn't tell me") through love. His trial and Truth gave him the clarity to express it, and the purpose to do so in many ways. It's also a positive grasp of purpose, since Viren ("I have power, purpose, and I intend to use both of them") and Aaravos ("I chose to live, and my life took on new purpose") become dark, twisted, and self destructive. Loving each other makes Callum and Rayla mutually better, and it's something both are finally able to whole heartedly embrace. To love is simply to know this.
Between this, and Viren's whole assessment that "The path of freedom is the path of truth," what could possibly be bad potentially about Rayla being Callum's one Truth, or the truth in general? Well...
Truth as A Weapon / a Burden
I actually wrote a meta all about this theme in Arc 2 for season 4 and season 5 before S6 called "Knowledge as a Burden" that I recommend reading if you haven't already. However, it's not necessary as this section is about how the Truth or 'Knowledge' can be a burden and a weapon depending on what the truth is, and how the information is presented. And this eventually does make its way back to the more positive outcome of Rayla being Callum's truth, so we'll circle our way back around.
With all that in mind, let's start with the most obvious. In 6x06, "Moment of Truth," both Callum and Viren wrestle with the results of previous actions due to dark magic. In one timeline, Callum learns the truth about the pearl and spirals into self-despair; in the other, ultimately canon timeline, this truth is withheld from him, allowing him to maintain the courage and strength he needs to go through the star-light ritual ceremony. By withholding the truth, he's given clarity, light, and purpose, which we went over in the previous section.
Alternatively, Viren's arc in this episode leans more heavily onto the concept that giving Soren the letter would be shifting a burden to his son.
Are you providing clarity, light, and purpose, or are you shifting a burden to someone who needs all their strength?
Both these plot lines ultimately end in different ways. By sharing the truth, Callum and Rayla reconcile, and by withholding the truth, Viren spares his son more pain, and they don't ultimately reconcile. I'll definitely talk about Viren and Soren's arc together in S6 someday in a proper meta, so I don't want to touch on it too much here, but it is noteworthy because it reaffirms the concept in this season that sometimes, knowing the truth can make things worse, not better, and cause more pain, not less.
We see this in how Callum's dark magic use weighs on him heavily in 6x03, leading to an argument between him and Rayla, and that learning he did dark magic causes Rayla to respond differently to his request to kill him; whereas before she steadfastly refused, here she agrees because she can see the risk and concerns are more prominent. This doesn't of course make their bond better (although it doesn't worsen it, either), but their literal ship does catch on fire and sink when she demands that he sacrifice her, and promises to sacrifice him, so... It's not good, either, even if it's ultimately good that Callum shared it with her for his own sake.
Where we see the Truth most weaponized in the season, however, in moving away from 'the truth as light' is with Aaravos himself.
AARAVOS: Good, good. You've played your part well. Before you perish, would you like a reward, a small mercy perhaps? The mercy of truth. The answer to the mystery that has haunted you for a thousand years. What happened to your beloved mate that disappeared? SOL REGEM: Tell me, betrayer. What became of Aithne Solaire? AARAVOS: I should warn you, sometimes the line between mercy and cruelty can be thin. [...] It was you. You killed her. Go on, breathe deep. I know you can smell the truth from a lie, and this is a deep, dark truth. In your fury, you buried her alive.
This is, of course, a move Aaravos used before ("Arrogant, just like your grandmother. Would you like to know the truth of her fate before you meet yours? I swallowed her") with Khessa back in season three. This is also something he utilizes as a manipulation tactic with others, knowing the importance of withholding the truth until it is beneficial for you to reveal it ("Careful, if you tell the truth you will lose her") and Aaravos' own belief that "[he] never lies" which Claudia reaffirms in 6x01: "Aaravos wasn't lying."
Of course, just because something is true according to him and his worldview or vantage point doesn't mean that it is deeply, objectively true, but that's another matter.
What matters here for the sake of this meta is that the truth isn't always good. The truth can be withheld to protect others (2x03, 6x06), to protect yourself (although sometimes misguided), and to manipulate and control other people (Viren orchestrating the war in S2 and S3, Aaravos routinely, etc). The "mercy of truth" is sometimes not mercy at all, but cruelty, showcased in Aaravos revealing something he knew would devastate and harm an already dying dragon/enemy.
The truth can be cruel. The truth can be deep and dark, too, not just light and lifting burdens. Knowledge can be an terrible burden. The truth can be awful.
So can love.
So can your path.
Truth as a Path (Freedom)
VIREN: Despite all this, I am changed. I woke up feeling free for the first time in a very long time. I know I have led my sweet, brilliant daughter down the wrong path. I have led you by the hand and I have led you by my example. Perhaps now if I walk the path of freedom, you will find your path someday, too. CLAUDIA: What do you mean 'path of freedom'? VIREN: The path of freedom is the path of truth. I must face my truth... in Katolis.
The path motif was something touched on sparingly in the first three seasons, largely in response to actual, literal paths the characters were taking. However, beginning more overtly in season four and bolstered by season five, Arc 2 has steadily turned it into one of the most consistent motifs that runs throughout season six. What is created, then, is a set of binary paths. There is the Path of Freedom—moving away from the Cycle and a narrative of strength, away from trying to replicate or get back to the past and moving towards the future instead, away from Aaravos and dark magic—and the 'wrong, dark' Path of Fate that moves in opposition to it.
This is most directly stated in Viren's final dream with his past self:
PRESENT VIREN: The path of fate is already chosen. Every step I took, I took because I had to. YOUNG VIREN: No. That can't be true. No matter where you are on the path, no matter what you've done before, every step forward is a choice. I am free, and so are you.
reaffirmed in Viren's decision at the end of 5x09:
VIREN: No. I won't do it. I finally see the truth. I find myself here at these horrifying crossroads because I have followed a dark path. And worst of all, I have led my beloved daughter done this path. No more dark magic! Never again! I am done with it — and I am done with you!
and in Callum's conversation with Rayla in 4x07:
CALLUM: What if I'm on a path of darkness? RAYLA: Then take a different path, dummy!
All of this was just some of the set up that has routinely put Rayla and Aaravos in direct opposition of each other for Callum's fate. There are framing things like her and the mirror being two very overt paths stretching out before Callum when she comes back, and Rayla being what pulls his attention away from the mirror, but 4x07 made it in The Text by having her represent and literally remind Callum he always has choices: "No one can control you or make your choices for you" (which is partially pressed on in his assessment in "I didn't have a choice" in 6x03, but again: meta for another day). Rayla always represented freedom (his wings, agency) and light (all previous framing) and she still does so in being his Truth. Rayla is his Light, reminder of his freedom, and brings all those things into being his Truth; it is a beautiful culmination (for now) of Callum's choice to move away from dark magic and Aaravos' control by literally embracing his love for Rayla and all she represents in his life. (And yeah you've probably already noticed the snag here, but I'm gonna get to that in a sec.)
This connection between Truth and Path is affirmed in Terry's talk with Claudia in 6x04, in which they discuss:
CLAUDIA: Maybe I should be walking a different path, too. But Aaravos helped us. He followed through on everything he said he was going to do to save my Dad, and I promised to help free him. So should I quit dark magic? Please, Terry, tell me what to do. TERRY: Claudia, I can't. Only you can see your own deep truth. Only you can decide the path you're going to walk. You won't be alone. [...] But you have to choose the way. What do you need to find your truth?
So on top of being Light and Love, and Rayla being Callum's One Truth equalling the Path of Freedom, Rayla is just Callum's chosen Path. He chooses the Path of light, love, freedom — all good things through the embodiment of her and their relationship, much the way Callum has been her guiding star in pulling her away from her dark and self-destructive paths (going after Viren) and making measured choices (coming back in 4x09, realizing she can't/shouldn't separate Lain and Tiadrin, etc).
Okay great, awesome! Sounds like Callum has done what he needs to do, he's rid himself of the taint of dark magic and Aaravos' control by proxy. His love for Rayla got him through it. She's his path. She's his truth.
What could possibly be wrong with that?
The Truth is Everything
After season four aired, I wrote a meta about how Aaravos (Fate) and Rayla (Freedom) represented Callum's two paths going forward into S5 and beyond. Much of what was in that meta has already been touched on here, given that S6 evolved this dichotomy and this motif in largely the ways I thought it ultimately would.
However, in that past meta, I also posited that these two paths would ultimately not be as separate as they might appear, and would converge. Part of this was because S4 emphasized the importance of not treating dualities as binaries, but in reconciling them ("Now you're back. That's kind of good, and it's kind of bad" / "How can I have that and the life I want with you? [...] Just have two cakes" / "We have to hold pain and love in our hearts at the same time"). Specifically, that Rayla would be what leads Callum into getting closer to Aaravos and playing into his clutches, which 5x08, 6x03—and indeed the upped stakes for dark magic use ("if you ever use it again, the darkness and corruption will overwhelm you") coming off 6x06—feel like natural steps forward.
Because while the light, and Truth, and Rayla, is usually a Good Thing in Callum's life, as Soren points out, it isn't always.
After all, Callum only did dark magic—both times—because of Rayla.
CALLUM: I did one spell. One. I had to, to save my friends. (5x08)
CALLUM: I did it for you! Finnegrin was going to kill you. I didn't have a choice, because... I would do anything for you. (6x03)
His love for Rayla has already been his path to darkness and Aaravos just as much as it's been his path out of darkness to light and freedom away from Aaravos. Aaravos has both dark and light; so does Rayla as a literal Moonshadow elf, and her dual swords, and her juxtaposition of immense mercy and obsessive violence. He is "destined to play into [Aaravos'] hands," with Aaravos' scheme for Callum still clearly ongoing, given that Aaravos is out and the cube is still in play.
They also wouldn't 1) bring up the possession related promise and 2) have Rayla actually agree to it and then 3) have her affirm that Runaan taught her to never break her promises all in the same season if it wasn't going to come back into play, and the only way Aaravos can possess Callum again is if he does dark magic again. (I'll do a separate meta sometime after this regarding how S6 evolves the possession plotline in about every episode Callum and Rayla are mutually in, later, too.)
Just as Rayla was the reason Callum ever did dark magic or successfully got the cube in the first place, she will almost surely, inevitably, be the reason he does dark magic — breaking his promise, and opening up room for her to break her own.
RAYLA: Listen to me. If you ever have to choose between me or the greater good, do the right thing. Make the sacrifice.
Callum will choose Rayla every time, whether that leads to saving or destroying himself.
She is His Path, singular—the path of fate and free will, to light and to darkness, to destruction and salvation. The various dualities in their relationship will all be reconciled and brought to complete fruition.
And that's everything.
