five fic Friday

so it's been a while, huh? life has been lifin' pretty hard, and I got out of the habit, and I kept saying "yeah I'll queue up some links or something" and then I didn't

and then this fuckin week happened, and I thought, ohhhhhhhh I don't feel good about some of my old recommendations.* maybe it is time to add some new ones that I can feel good about, which:

Of All the Gin Joints (10K, T) by @knifeturtlelives - canon-divergent AU where Ed runs into Stede at Jackie'z circa 2x1 - funny and poignant, frankly I crave more!

Vitamin C (795, T) by @oatmilktruther - MIND THE TAGS, as in, I saw the tags in the notification email and yelled I'M TRUSTING YOU out loud in my empty house; as in, major character death and no, not that guy. and also: an amazing gem of a fic. As a gardener and a widow: yeah, this.

In the cave, we are safe (2046, T) by @cochineal - inspired by the djenks holiday special, a bit of wound-tending with a really compelling narrative voice.

Pearls (2232, M) by @temporal-discounting - I also put this in my "Ed tells Stede about Izzy" collection, but it does that in the most interesting way I think I've seen, gets to that topic so gently and sideways, I'm compelled by the whole concept.

You're the fucking man, bro (1416, T) by @petrichorca - listed as a "rarepair", but let's call this what it is: Vincent's unrequited crush on Stede Bonnet, which is goddamn hilarious and sweet, and Stede is a real gentleman about it.

and now that I've done this: yeah, it's a bit time-consuming but also it reminded me why I liked these, and got me to revisit some things I've enjoyed lately. I'm happy I got back to it.

more good news from tiktok: they’ve started blocking celebrities.

they’re calling it block party 2024. just blocking and ignoring countless celebrities who havent said shit about palestine. influencers, actors, anyone who went to the met gala, whatever, they’re getting blocked. and people keep talking about how cathartic it is, how good it feels, how they never realized they could DO that. there was some kind of subconscious law against blocking famous people, but it’s broken, and people are LOVING it. and it’s WORKING. a social media/digital advertising coordinator was talking about how ad companies are PANICKING, because they can’t accurately target anymore. so many big influencers, including fucking LIZZO started talking about palestine the MOMENT their follower counts started going down. and the best part? no one is forgiving them. lizzo posted a tiktok asking people to donate to palestinian families, and all the comments just said you’re a multimillionaire. put your money where your mouth is. blocked.

i feel like i’m witnessing the downfall of celebrity culture, right here right now. people are waking up.

I love that all of the dungeon meshi crew are complicated and have difficult to love components.#But Izutsumi is a particular kind of hard to love. I foresee a lot of people being turned off by her abrasiveness and lack of teamwork.#She is very self-centered and openly goes against what the party agrees on.#She's a picky eater in a story that is 50% about eating good and healthy food!#It is in part about her growth but admittedly even *then* she remains rather true to her self-centeredness.#Even though she isn't as nice or funny or compassionate as the others...Izutsumi is still someone worth loving.#Even the more difficult people are someone worth loving.#And those people in turn are people who have something and someone they love.#She may be a girlcat but she is the most human of them all.#I hope that if you are an anime only watcher and are feeling put off by her at the moment; you'll give her a chance.#By the way: *yes* I worked very hard to draw that skateboard pose. It was worth it.#EDIT: HAPPY 500th POST OF POORLY-DRAW-MDZS!!! What a comic to commemorate the milestone with!

we cry "the innocent women and children" to appeal to the masses, to try and force their sympathy, but the men and boys are innocent too.

I have seen sons crying out for their mothers, their fathers, their siblings. I have seen them break down at the loss of their families. I have seen them cling to their dead and grieve.

I have seen fathers cradle their dead children, seen them kiss their faces and hold their little hands. I have seen them faint with grief when asked to identify the dead. I have seen them carry their sons and daughters. I have seen them fasting to provide what little they can for their families.

I have seen men and boys digging through the rubble with just their bare hands, I have seen them comforting strangers, playing with children, rocking them, hushing them, even if the face of such imminent danger. I have seen them cry, seen them grieve, seen them break down into each other's arms, seen them be selfless, beyond selfless, becoming something I don't have a word for.

I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they're threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.

the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.

#I don't have words to describe how I feel for the men of Palestine #the things I have seen them do after everything they have been through goes so far beyond selfless #what do you call this? this prevailing goodness and willingness to give everything they have and more? what word even touches it?#I don't think there is one #islamophobia has conditioned us to see these men and boys as evil and dangerous #we see this in how we speak about Palestine #and we need to uncondition ourselves #they're just as innocent and of value and good as the women and children #so fight for them #they don't deserve this any more than the women and children #free palestine #palestine
