WIP Snippet - Part 1 & Part 2

Some background information to Understand this WIP snippet:

Takes place in the A New York Yankee in Hogwarts' Courtyard, 1890 universe where Iñaki accidentally traveled back in time from the year 2008 to 1890 and has to navigate living in the 1890s without revealing she's from the future.

Now that she's back in the present, she realizes you can't always escape from the past.

(Contains Snippets from two different scenes that aren't in order: Part 1: The Future and Part 2: Present. Both parts are still in WIP.)

Part 1: The Future

Stop it Iñaki! You have a home to go to! You did all that you could to protect him. Just trust in the systems you laid that he’ll walk out a free man. Just ignore it, step into the circle and go home.

Back to your time where you belong.

Still, her feet refused to move.

“YOU CAN READ IT WHEN YOU GET BACK! JUST GO!” She froze at the sound of her own voice, wondering when she made the transition from mental self-talk to verbal speak before she sighed.

“You’re going to mess up the timeline even further if you just stay…” Iñaki mumbled to herself as she rubbed her forehead. With a sigh, she pocked the letters and stepped into the Feldcroft Stonehedge.

With a quick spoken word as she called upon her ancient magic, she found it pulled out towards the standing stones before it was then blasted back toward her.

Iñaki knocked out.

When Iñaki first woke up, it was to the sounds of birds singing and a tongue licking her face. With a frown, she pushed whatever creature that was licking her away from her face before she sat up with confusion as she rubbed her face and blinked at her surroundings.

The trees that were once saplings further in the distance when she last closed her eyes were now tall proud standing oaks that provided excellent shade for a nice day out in the sun.

“I…I did it. I…I came back home.” Iñaki chuckled before she started laughing and celebrating as she leapt up with a cheer. “I’M HOME!” Iñaki laughed as she hugged the puffskin that was next to her and licked her earlier. She did a little spin with the creature in her arms before she put it at arms’ length. “Puffskin, I’m home! I did it!” Iñaki grinned.

Part 2: Present

Iñaki remembered the first time she entered Hogsmeade how it felt like she walked into a fairy-tale storybook with the cobblestone streets, the two-storied buildings and gas-powered (at least she thought it was the first time she came here) lampposts. She felt like she could’ve been part of a background in a children’s story book.

The road to Hogsmeade was lonely now that she was walking there by herself. She couldn’t understand why she was doing this either until she got to a fork in the road; one went to Hogsmeade, the other went to Hogsmeade Train Station.

As she stared at the sign that pointed to Hogsmeade, her feet made the decision to take the path to Hogsmeade Train station.

It was a dream.

It didn’t matter which direction she went.

So down the path she went until she got to Hogsmeade Station. The place was still alive despite it being around 3:34 AM according to the clock nearby.

3 A.M. is the witching hour according to some nomaj Christian folklore. But it’s always witching hour if you’re a witch. Iñaki snickered to herself as she walked around the train station hands in her pajama pants’ pockets, noting how there were still people up sitting in benches or talking by the stairways to the bridge. Some had luggage while others held bags that held their belongings.

Iñaki smiled at the people waiting despite no one taking a second glance at her as she walked around, wondering what this dream was trying to tell her. Then she frowned when she looked across the tracks, at the platform on opposite side.

There, stood Sebastian Sallow.

Staring back at her in awe.

He looked just like the last two times she saw him. Sebastian wore the familiar outfit when they had days off from school as it felt the coziest to him: a knitted beige sweater with forest green pants with a wand holster tied on his left leg. Underneath his beige sweater tied around his waist was the Crossed Wands Champion tartan blue slash.

Sebastian closed his jaw and opened it again as he moved his lips to form a word that was familiar to her as she read his lips.

Iñaki?

When she didn’t reply, he said it again. Louder this time.

“Iñaki?”

This time, the noise all stopped as Iñaki noticed suddenly everyone was looking at where Sebastian was.

“Do you see that?”

“It’s a ghost boy!”

“I wonder what era he’s from? He looks like he popped out of the Victorian Era.”

“Do you think that’s the same ghost haunting Feldcroft?”

“No, that’s one is punished to be tethered to that village for the crimes he committed against his uncle and some girl. He’s usually seen with the old Azkaban prisoner uniform.”

At that Sebastian winced before the people on the platform gasped.

“He vanished!”

“Where did he go?”

“I think I got a picture! Here! It’s on my cell phone!”

“Let me have a look!”

The people mumbled as if Sebastian had disappeared but Iñaki was still able to see him across the track as this time she opened and closed her mouth in bafflement. Just as quick as he winced, his face immediately shifted into one of worry as he met her eyes and said:

“Stay there Iñaki! Don’t move. That’s an order.”

Too stunned to move, she watched as he climbed up the stairs, ran over the bridge and down the stairs before meeting her on her side of the tracks. She was then tackled by his infamous bear hugs. His arms were wrapped around her torso as he laid his head to rest on her hair as he sighed in relief.

“I finally found you.” His voice cracked as she stood there like a statue, uncertain of what to make of this dream before she gave in to her old habits and hugged him back just as tight. Not even caring how odd this dream was as she laid her head against his chest to listen to that steady beat in his chest that brought her peace from the mumbling of the world around her.

She froze when she realized she realized she couldn’t hear anything at all.

“Iñaki. Look at me. Don’t panic, just look at me. Please.” Sebastian said, voice begging like it did whenever he tried to convince her to do something dangerous for the sake of research.

And like a hippogriff hearing its mate’s call, she listened and looked up and met his eyes.

“That’s it. You’re doing good. Just look at me and focus. Everything’s going to be alright. I promise.”

“Bu-but Sebastian.” She said in slight panic as one of Sebastian’s arm wrapped around her waist, holding her closely as if afraid she would run away and vanish. “I can’t hear you heart-”

“Look at me.” He said as he caressed her left cheek with his right hand. “You feel me, right?”

Iñaki nodded as she tried to not hyperventilate in her dream.

“Bu-but I don’t understand. This don’t make sense.” Iñaki said as she tried to pull back, feeling lightheaded.

Instead, Sebastian’s hold grew firmer.

“Iñaki please calm down. Before you vanish again and get lost again.”

“What do you mean I vanish and get lost again!?!” Iñaki frown as she finally won and pushed him back to stare at him. “I can’t hear your heart.”

She found herself having a hard time breathing as her breathing became quicker and she realized something critical as if her lungs were having trouble taking in the air. She placed her hands around her the base of her neck in the universal of choking, hoping that he’ll understand her.

“I can’t breathe-”

…

Iñaki woke up against her will as she quickly sat up and pushed a heavy weight off her face. The heavy weight turned out to be Aster, Daisy’s familiar tortie cat.

Aster meowed at her as if saying,

Well human. Aren’t you going to feed me?

It looked just as smug as well.

Iñaki huffed and went to Daisy’s closet to take out a small bag before pouring it onto Aster’s food plate before putting the bag away. She called out her wand to her and it flew straight into her hand before she mumbled a quick aguamenti to pour some water on Aster’s dry kibble before she decided to call it a night and went back to sleep.

This time she didn’t dreamt of anything and by the time morning came, she completely forgot about her first dream she had earlier in the night.

seungcheol: casual player. doesn’t use custom designs and uses the provided paths. definitely has a villager neighborhood and is trying to complete the robot hero. doesn’t know time traveling is an option.

jeonghan: stalk market enthusiast. he probably has that island where people have to pay him in order to go to his island to catalog items (either irl or through nookazon). sets a 5 min limit for visitors (10 if they're nice).

joshua: nightcore but his island is named and modeled after his favorite nightclub. uses a ton of floor lights. island looks like a giant rave or festival. definitely has a water booth section 🥴

jun: kidcore 🥺 loves the pastels and all of his villagers are cat villagers. lolly is his best friend. gifts all of the villagers cat-related items. definitely says sorry if he bumps into a villager.

soonyoung: junglecore. do I even need to explain what kind of villager he collects? anyway his island is lush with a ton of greenery but there’s this random gym area for his jock villagers. definitely uses tiger flooring.

seokmin: naturalcore. has his own island lore. lives for the drama so he follows his villagers around and knows which villagers are beefing and which are dating. definitely has beef with some villagers ngl.

seungkwan: bought the game when it first came out, and gave it to jun after a month. couldn’t care less about it.

hansol: towncore. flattened his cottagecore island and is currently building a suburban towncore island with diagonal paving. travels back and forth between paradise planning and his island. doesn’t like acnh spoliers so his jaw DROPPED after he completed 30 vacation homes.

BNHA Hybrid World Building

WARNING: The following post has dark themes, including, but not limited to, Dehumanization, Abuse, Kidnapping, Enslavement, Fetishization, Human Breeding, Mistreatment, etc.

I would like to add before we begin that none of this is canon, it never has been, the other night I was struck with inspiration to write about the BNHA quirk history, specifically what I could see happening to people who were born with Animal Hybrid quirks. While there may be some nicer bits, this is mainly focused on the dark side and mistreatment towards hybrids. My aim is also not to offend anyone, and I’d like to stress that this is FICTIONAL, and any opinions I have, or whatever is written should be looked at in that light, as a piece of FICTION.

In the BNHA universe, back when quirks were just starting to pop up

people with animal hybrid quirks were probably sought after as pets and dehumanized

like how we breed dogs for bloodline purity, they'd essentially breed animal hybrid humans for the same reason

I imagine that around the world it would become a wildly popular thing to own one, and at later dates they'd start things like cat cafes, but with animal hybrids instead

with the quirk laws however, people who would have most likely been fighting against animal hybrid mistreatment would win, seeing as it's their quirk, and while a bunch of people would get released, many would probably be kept in secret, and the breeding and selling of them would go to the black market

due to it going onto the black market, that could also mean that a lot of the "pets" who were released and starting the rehabilitation process might have been recaptured in order to keep bloodlines pure and such

also due to the black market switch, some may begin to sell the more difficult ones into fighting rings, like how some inhumane people do with dogs irl, and may even start breeding for that purpose specifically

now I could go on and on about the effects of the black market switch but I wanna give insight to the treatment they get in the "kennels" and at their "home"

most likely, exotic hybrids and bird hybrids would become highly sought after, especially during the beginning due to laws restricting ownership of said animals normally, ie. someone in the US may want a wolf hybrid, or a jaguar

the bird part would probably be because of their wings and feathers, some religious people may come to think of them as lucky charms to help guide god into their homes and such, since they look so "angelic"

this could also lead to a lot of bird hybrids without white wings being left to die

now, for other hybrids, it would probably be a mix of celebrity pet owners and animal abusers treatment wise

since they're part animal, part human, a lot of people wouldn't see it as abuse, but simple punishment, and because of there being no laws to protect the hybrids, their "owners" would get away with it

many may even go as far as to completely dehumanize the hybrid, making them act like their animal counterpart, or a domesticated version (ie, eating kibble from a bowl, walking on all fours, etc)

i imagine some of the owners who bought the hybrids for their sexual needs may even have the hybrids not wear clothes when in the house, and force them to completely rely upon the owner for everything

back before the black market switch (as i now will forever refer to it as) a lot of owners might have flaunted having well behaved hybrids, and it may have became a thing where competitions would come about, like how dogs compete

most likely the common practice of breeding champion bloodlines would become wildly popular as well

I can also see a lot of people starting to use horse hybrids, or 'centaurs' to be specific, in competitions and races, due to them having a more human mind they'd be less likely to misbehave and not jump

i imagine that due to this, some countries wrote laws in favor of "normal" quirks, but kept hybrid quirks out of the ordeal, and in said countries there's probably a lot of protests and marches for hybrid rights

I also imagine that the main reason why Hawks and Miriko are so popular is because they're hybrids, and the fact that they're Japanese heroes shows that Japan was in favor for hybrid rights, or never enslaved them in the first place, although I imagine they would have gotten a lot of hate in the beginning due to their hybrid status, especially from other countries who hadn't accepted hybrid rights

now, before the quirk laws, I think some people may have even thought to breed other quirked people with hybrids, in order to get specific combinations, and this is probably where quirk marriage derived from, due to it becoming a common practice among hybrid fighting rings for powerful quirks

which may have led to hybrids who could change what kind of hybrid they were, hybrids who were partially related or resembled mythical creatures, or hybrids that resembled extinct animals

it could also have led to protection hybrids, much like how we use dogs for protection, they'd be bred specifically for high power ratings and obedience, and said lines may be bread with champion or purebred bloodlines in order to make them more popular

i can also see a lot of kidnappings happen with breeding and such, like kidnapping newborn hybrids, especially after the black market switch, since a lot of people would no longer be willing to sell their children to sellers and breeders

Due to the dehumanization that hybrids went through, I don't think many of them would be able to read or write, and a lot of them may have lacked the ability to speak English. due to the breeding and treatment, they may have vocal cords that allowed them to speak in the language their animal counterparts would

I can also see a lot of hybrids being raised around their animal counterpart specifically because of this, so that dog hybrids would bark, bird hybrids would whistle and chirp, cat hybrids would meow, etc

for the hybrids that wouldn't be able to get near their counterpart, a lot of people would have went for the closest substitute

I can see a lot of people with animal controlling quirks being popular in the hybrid selling business, specifically for this, since they'd be able to get the more exotic and dangerous animals to teach their hybrid counterparts how to speak and somewhat act

I can see a lot of hybrids being bought at around ages 3 to 4 since they wouldn't have to feed them milk or baby food

now, farm animal hybrids would be quite popular, I mean honestly, female cow hybrids, realistically, would most likely naturally produce a lot of milk, and said milk may become popular amongst the population be it the fetishizing or just because it tastes good

I think in the countries that don't favor hybrid rights may introduce laws for specific hybrids, such as only qualified owners can have specific hybrids

since for certain species, specific needs must be met, and the same would probably go for hybrids, now, relating this to the cow hybrid bit, infection, proper care and milking would probably become necessary due to the popularity in cow hybrid milk

other species that relate to specialty goods, like sheep for wool, may also get this level up treatment

I think out of all the hybrids, specialty good hybrids like cows, sheep, possibly deer (for their antlers), would have it the best in the countries that are anti hybrid rights

due to needing special care and their products being popular amongst the public

I can also see a lot of exchange or rehabilitation programs popping up in the pro hybrid rights countries, examples being when a large amount of hybrids are recently freed from an illegal seller/breeder, they may be transferred to a different country for safety purposes and rehabilitated there

Although, I can also see this concept going wrong, as this would probably be one of many instances where kidnappings would happen. Be that because the seller had strong bloodlines, because the hybrids they had specifically were rare, or just because another seller needed more hybrids

Incidents where illegal sellers/breeders are caught in pro hybrid rights countries would probably blow up on the news every now and again, due to it dealing with human rights, and I imagine in hero schools, they may introduce courses on how to deal with enslaved hybrids since I imagine it would be quite hard to console a large kennel of dehumanized, and essentially brainwashed, people who don’t know anything other than what they were taught

Pro hybrid rights governments would probably have a fund for rehabilitating hybrids, and there may be several charities to help support the recovering people, and I can see there being host families to help them readjust to normal life, before they’re able to go out on their own. A lot of children would be put into this kind of program due to their parents being unable to care properly for them

First of all I’ve never lived alone (yet) so idk how it works irl but this is what i think

Secondly I imagined that you pay rent the place and the boys joined in and you pay it together so you know if they payed it or not

And one more thing all the boys are good looking but wrote ‘eye candy for those who are mentioned to be really good looking namely Asmo (duh), Mammon (he’s a model) and Lucifer (it’s his whole thing that he’s really beautiful and perfect, right?)

Lucifer

Pros:

- Will never have a problem with paying rent on time or anything like that

- He won’t be home a lot

- He will do half of the chores no matter what, even if he can’t do it at the moment he will make it up next time

- Pretty flexible with the chores. If you can’t make it (and he can) he will do them. He knows how life gets, you are busy, he is busy too usually

- Won’t eat your food or use your stuff

- He won’t bother you unless something affects him too

- He will keep to himself mostly so he won’t be invasive

- Won’t be loud at night or take home random people to hook up with

- Is chill and you can have a good conversation or just do your thing silently together

- He has a lot of pretty fancy acquaintances which can be pretty useful if you want to make some money as a sugarbaby

- Is an eye candy

- Has really good music recommendations

- He is pretty stoic and emotionless but has a soft spot for you

Cons:

- He doesn’t want you to touch is stuff

- Or be too invasive especially with you entering without knocking

- Will absolutely murder you if you accidentally see him without any if his clothes on

- While he is flexible with the chores you need to get even, he refuses to do the chores alone

- He doesn’t care about your room but the space you use together NEEDS to be clean and proper no matter what

- Can have a bit of a temper

- Easy to get in arguments with because of his pride and for the same reason he won’t be the first to say sorry or say sorry at all

- He won’t admit if he is wrong just if he can’t deny it anymore

- You can’t be loud when he wants to sleep but he goes to bed pretty late usually so that’s not a real big problem

- Doesn’t like other people around the house so if you want friends around make sure he won’t be home

- Hook ups a big no no to him, even if you are quiet there’s a possibility that he will meet some hung over stranger in the kitchen in the morning and he’s not about that so please go to their place

- Will be really hard to convince him to introduce you to his rich friends, he doesn’t want any drama

Mammon:

Pros:

- He’s really fun to have around your friends really like him

- He’s really a sweetheart if you are down and is genuinely a really good friend

- You can go partying together

- You can go viral on the internet with the amount of meme material you get living with him

- He has a lots of useful connections (he is a sugar baby and a model if you interested) generally knows people, like you need a bomb ass website he knows a guy, need a snake charmer to a birthday party he went to high school with this guy

- Is an eye candy too

- You’ll never be lonely while rooming with him

- He won’t take home random people to have sex

- He has the patience of an angel and it’s really hard to get in an argument with him

- If you are sore he knows about 5 different stretches to help

- Really big and tall so he can reach everything in the appartement without any problems so if you’re short it’s a lot less chair dragging

- He knows every good restaurant in the town

- Takes you out on dinner dates even if your are just friends

- You can make him do anything if you offer him food

- He’s buff so he can scare off anyone who’s bothering you

- Respectful of your privacy and will always text you or knock before he goes into your room

- Let’s address the elephant in the room, he will eat everything and anything he sees it doesn’t matter if it’s yours, he will feel guilty though so he probably tries to replace it

- He has Belphie over a shit ton or more like: If Belphegor makes the effort to visit his brother he won’t leave for days to make his trip worth it

- It’s an endless cycle of you have something in the fridge for more than half an hour, Beel eats it, he feels guilty, you find out, you scold him because it gets really annoying real fast, he looks like a kicked puppy, you feel guilty for hurting him and then tell him that you aren’t angry just don’t do it again (but he does but he’s a hungry baby what can he do? 🥺)

- Sometimes has his teammates over (which isn’t a bad thing if you like hot jocks)

- The mess that they leave is definitely is a bad thing

Belphegor

Pros:

- He won’t bother you a lot

- He will help with the chores after you made him to do it

- He is totally okay with you having friends around

- He’s never loud (if he can’t sleep at night he’s pacing but that’s all)

- He won’t use your things

- If he’s not asleep he’s really chill and you can have nice conversations

- He has a really hot jock twin

- Amazing naps together

- This baby is made for cuddling so if you have a bad day you can just go for it without it being awkward even if you’re just friends

- He can literally sleep through anything so you don’t have to be that careful with the noise

- He’s really thoughtful and watches out for you like the type to call you if you said you’re gonna be home at 4 and it’s 5 and you aren’t home yet

Cons:

- You have to chase him down with rent because he forgets (and now he doesn’t even bother to try to keep it in mind because he knows you will come to him)

- You have to pester him because otherwise he wouldn’t take care of himself (he wouldn’t eat for 2 days straight because he’s lazy to cook)

- He will nap anywhere and everywhere not even your room and bed is off limits

- Said hot jock twin comes over a lot because Belphie is too lazy to go to his place

- Beel empties out the fridge a lot of the time even with Belphie stopping him

- He is really chill most of the time but if you talk about certain subjects he is surprisingly short tempered which can lead to arguments

Thank you for the questions!  Discussing writing is fun.  I love seeing others’ answers come across my dash.  Again, thanks for the ask!  This is from the FanFic Questions Themed Around Time.

Monday:  do you struggle with the ‘boring’ parts of writing?

Of course!  It’s like life though.  I procrastinate and grumble about it.  Then I finally realize if I just push through and get it done I’ll feel better.  I don’t write out of order, so there’s always the reward of reaching the scene I really do want to write.  Because of this big action scene I don’t want to write, the tender follow-up scene between the OTP will be that much more satisfying and deep.

Friday:  most self-indulgent fic you have ever posted?

I answered that here.  It’s “Sideways,” since honestly, it didn’t seem like a wise investment of my time.  However, I love it.  I learned a lot.  I’m glad I wrote it.  All the kind comments I’ve gotten have made it totally worth it.

November:   do you have any rituals or requirements for getting in the mood for writing?

I like total silence.  I’ll even wear earplugs if I must.  I prefer being alone, except for the cat and dog.  I can’t write in a messy room.  I’ll either have to clean it or go to a different room.

Minutes:   how long does it normally take you to complete a fic?

I wrote “Burning Barriers” in three to four months.  It’s 300k (3 books but posted as one on AO3).  It took much longer to actually type it up and do the edits.  It took me about a year over all from first chapter first draft to last chapter third draft.  

“Sideways” took me almost two years to write the first draft.  I wrote other projects at the same time, essentially all my other posted work on AO3.  I’m not sure of the word count for “Sideways” since it’s written in notebooks.  I’m only now typing it up and editing each section as I post.  There are five sections (5 books posted as one on AO3) that tend to be 100 - 200k per part.  I’ve been exclusively dedicated to editing “Sideways” since August 2020.  I’m currently on part 3.  

It’s a long haul.  I wouldn’t recommend anyone go as overboard as I have.  Novels are typically 70-90k, and that’s probably a more appropriate length versus the 100 - 200k/book series I wrote.  

September:   share a comment or review which still warms your heart?

Wow, I have so many comments that have affected me deeply!  I’ve read many of them more times than I read the story they commented on.  It’s very hard to choose, and I always worry about embarrassing someone.  

A recent comment I got on “Sideways” that meant a lot to me said:

I try not to miss a single detail and always read the chapters very thoughtfully and notice especially memorable moments for myself, sometimes write them down as quotations, then analyze, speculate on the possible further development of the plot and everything like that. So, yes, reading your works is a significant event for me) every update is akin to a holiday, but oh well, it's time to start writing the review itself . . . 

I laughed sitting in my chair, which has already taken the form of my ass and once again became convinced of your unique writing talent. How can you be so good at writing angst, dialogue, witty jokes and describing battle scenes at the same time? . . .

It finished me off. I sat with a stunned expression on my face, my heart was beating somewhere in my throat, I glared at the screen and tried to digest everything I heard from Cicero. This chapter and in particular this scene remains one of the most beloved in fics. I have read it over five times . . .

I write comments on your work to emphasize the importance of what you do, that your works are read and loved in different parts of our planet, that it is much more than just fanfiction. I have never received such pleasure from reading anything in my life, my brain is boiling in the best way when I try to keep track of every detail of what is happening in your fics. I adore your works with all my heart, this is what inspires me.

I think I may have actually blushed while reading this comment, it was so complimentary and generous.  The commenter went through a lot of specifics enjoyed and discussed idea.  It really affected me that someone would devote that level of time and care to my story.  I never imagined anyone caring about my story (except for me) to that degree.

IRL my family and friends look down on me writing fanfiction and getting a comment like that means everything.  I realize there are people who truly appreciate my fanfiction, even if it’s just fanfiction.  They see it as valuable as other forms of writing.  Everything the commenter said to me meant a lot.  Though, I don’t feel like I deserve that level of high compliment, it was really encouraging and impactful to read.

Do you write fluff/angst/crack/general/smut, combo, etc? Why? i don’t really much write fluff since i don’t have any idea how to write a good fluff!! :( this has been an issue every time i write some au’s. so im always ending up writing and focusing more on angst. it’s the genre i know best. well, crack… it’s hard to make the readers laugh when you can’t even make their tooth ache from sweetness with your fluffy writings. :( smut… i don’t write smut explicitly any more. i’m more on the suggestive side rn. 

Do you write OCs, X Readers, Ships...etc  i write OC’s especially when im writing a series!! to diversify my writing. but i usually am on the x reader side. ships? not that much. 

Why did you decide to write for Tumblr? uhm, back in 2017, i was searching for some website where i could publish my works. ive always been a tumblr-girl since i am that wanna-be-aesthetic kinda person :D then i had found that i could write and publish on tumblr so yeah that’s pretty much why i am on this app rn

What inspires you to write?  ooh, music has been a great help for sure!! whenever i don’t feel like writing something, i always listen to music and the idea would flow like a river. classic poems helps, too. :)

What genres/AUs do you enjoy writing the most?  supernatural!au’s, fantasy!au, medieval!au. i feel like it’s easier to write something out of pure fantasy. i have a hard time writing modern!au’s since i lack the humor and the knowledge for modern slangs. 

What do you hope your readers take away from your work?  ooh, i always always always am careful with the way that i craft all my works. i try to feel what my characters feel to give them a certain validation. i put my shoes on the scenarios i have in mind even though i haven’t yet experienced everything ive written. and i do love writing strong female characters, whether it’s oc’s or female readers. that’s my main priority whenever i write. and i want them to know that girls could do just as much everything boys could. women are powerful. 

What do you do when you hit a rough spot creatively?  i read a lot to get back on my foot. i also try to re-read my past works so i’d be inspired to better my writing on my current draft.

What is your favorite work and why? Your most successful?  my favorite work is the one i’m still writing rn, which is entitled 505. it’s a hendery fic in which he is a bandit and the female reader is a sacristan. it’s my fave since i relate myself so much to the female reader. :) my most successful one is the childhood best friends!au taeyong x female reader. it’s about to reach 600+ notes i guess? and im so grateful of all the feedbacks i got from it. 

Who is your favorite person to write about?  it’s jaehyun and hendery :) 

Do you think there’s a difference between writing fanfiction vs. completely original prose?  character wise, perhaps. since you already have a face value in fanfiction, but in an original prose, you would have to craft everything from 0. 

What do you think makes a good story?  a good story is something that doesn’t romanticize the bad things going on in the world. a good story is something that is emphatic to the hardships of others. a good story is something that gives comfort to those who are in the dark. a good story is something that boosts the hearts of the readers and makes them feel things!! 

What is your writing process like?  first, i think of a plot! (this happens oftentimes when im washing the dishes) when i have the plot, i think of the ending. when i have the ending, it’s time for me to device a fitting title. and the plot would develop from then on. 

Would you ever repurpose a fic into a completely original story?  i don’t think so… this is scary. since some people think of fanfics as delusional works from delusional authors. it’s kinda sad. 

What tropes do you love, and what tropes can’t you stand?  i love love love enemies-to-lovers trope!! one that i couldn’t stand and do my best to not read is probably… hmm… no, i love all tropes!! i just love e-t-l most!

How much would you say audience feedback/engagement means to you?  it means a ton. since it could really boosts me up. heavy sigh. it’s the best thing when you write something— the feedbacks. even though it’s a simple reblog with the ‘#ATKSHSKSHSKAHAKSGAHGEGSJA’ or ‘#myfave’. i would smile like an idiot whenever i read it.

Dream job (whether you have a job or not)? i want to be a successful writer someday!

If you could have one superpower, what would you choose? teleportation!! 

If you could visit a historical era, which would you choose?  ancient greek + victorian era

If you could restart your life, knowing what you do now, would you?  yes!! im so hell deep in indecision right now so i want to restart to make everything right

Do you think fanfic writers get unfairly judged?  yes!! ugh, there’s this recent issue wherein stan twt called fanfic writers as freaks. and it broke my heart. i mean, most fanfic writers get inspirations from their idols and that shouldn’t be a bad thing. we aren’t delusionals as one might think. we are simply doing our craft. 

Do you think art can be a medium for change?  yes!! our country’s hero ‘jose rizal’ had somehow stirred the nationality of the people back in the old days because of his writings. i do believe that art changes things!! it has the ability to pierce the heart of the people.  

Do you ever feel there are times when you’re writing for others, rather than yourself?  yes. i feel this whenever im writing smut. i mean, let’s be real, your works would do better once you’ve included some steamy smut scenes in it. when i was writing my first fanfic after three years, i didn’t think that i’d ever include smut. but the fear of not getting feedbacks crept up in me, so i forced myself to write some sexy scenes. i know that’s like… weird. but i’m trying not to dwell on feedbacks any longer. and i also have decided not to write explicit smut anymore. honestly, i feel better now that i don’t force myself to do something that i think would please others rather than me.

Do you ever feel like people have misunderstood you or your writing at times?  uhm, as far as i can remember, nope— still hasn’t felt that way. :)

Do your offline friends/loved ones know you write for Tumblr?  yes!! my best friends irl knows about it. my sister knows. my parents are also aware of my passion in writing, and they do know that i write. but where and what, that remains obscured from them :D 

What is one thing you wish you could tell your followers?  that it’s okay to be vulnerable. it’s okay to make mistakes. it’s okay to fail sometimes. it’s okay to feel things. because like a good book, there is always a character development and you have the pen to write your own version of happy endings. 

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who might be too scared to put themselves out there?  i’ve been there: the scared and conscious part. but one thing i would say is, you have to dare yourself!! you won’t know how your writing would have impacted so many lives and touch the hearts of people if you won’t grab your pen or your gadget and start your draft. 

Are there any times when you regret joining Tumblr?  nope, there aren’t. the community has been lovely to me ever since i started writing. :,)

AHhh! I–OK well, Lately I’ve been finding more and more fics that fill my heart right up with every gorgeous headcanon there is, but If we’re talking all-time favourites, I have finally compiled a List from the moment I started reading shyan fic in 2018 of fics that have ruined my life; all of them here in no particular order.

Be All My Sins Remembered by spoopyy

Summary: In every lifetime, they find each other.

Review: This fic manages to take you on a long journey through what feels like a series of AUs and they all weave in and out of the wealth of their relationship with some vivid descriptions of the historical settings their journey takes them through. As someone who grew up reading Anne Rice’s epics through historical events, this fic is right up my alley. A vampire Shane passing through the wave of human society’s climb searching for a reincarnated Ryan again and again, trying to hold on to him and keep him through great tragedies and timeframes that just don’t let them be together. This was one of the first fics I read when I was only a lurker and to be quite honest, I need to give this one a nice re-read, maybe for the book club which would be loads of fun. Either way, 10/10. Would be Hurt in the heart again.

Perfect Fit by @beaniegara

Summary: There’s a legend that says anyone able to take all of statue Shane’s cock will summon the god to the mortal realm. Given the statue’s excessive size, no one has ever succeeded to prove or disprove the story.Until Ryan that is.

Review: Listen. You wanna talk actual fandom legends. This fic is one of them and it pulls out all the stops on being delicious and evocative. Also features one of my favourite incarnations of size queen bergara. Good stuff and you’re really rooting for Ryan in this lol. 

Everything’s Weird and We’re Always in Danger by the beethechange

Summary: Ryan perches on the edge of the bed, an indistinct shape that Shane can only just make out in the dark, so he turns the lamp back on. He wants to see Ryan’s face, wants to know that he is alright. Ryan’s cheeks are damp, his hands fisted in the hideous flowered duvet.

“It won’t go away,” Ryan says miserably. “I’ve been like this since we got here, basically, and it won’t fucking—”

“Ah,” Shane says. “Well, you know, sometimes fear…adrenaline…they can affect people. Physically.” He waves his hands indistinctly crotchward. “It’s a, a scientifically known phenomenon.” Shane feels a little better staying in the realm of scientifically known phenomena.

Review: Word of advice. You see a fic is authored by beethechange, run don’t walk because you’re absolutely always going to be treated to the best of banter, the best of prose, chemistry, organic execution and feels right up the bottom end of your heart. This fic, this changed everything I thought I knew I wanted out of a bed-sharing fic. It’s got a little bit of two treats here. You got a sex-pollen-esque situation mixed with bed-sharing and holy fucking damn that is more than you think you deserve, but read this because you do deserve the best of the best. The build up, the dialogue, the surprisingly hilarity of it, the hotness woah, and The Aftermath. When you think you know what you’re in for, you’re wrong and you’re most pleasantly surprised. Get this fic in your life and honestly? while you’re at it, you could do a clean sweep of every fic in her list of works and while my less than adequate reading time management may still be short on some of her most well-recommended pieces, I have an adamant faith that Bee doesn’t disappoint. Go get y’all juice.

Maelstrom by thewindupbird

Summary: Here’s the thing about driving halfway across the country to see someone. You can’t really deny, after that, that you’re pretty much head over heels for them.

Review: Listen. One morning on a day off, I just laid in bed and read this– all 40k+ words– while lying there clutching my pillows, hurting and loving every moment of it. The descriptions of Americana, the slow steady metronome rhythm of Ryan’s feelings as frightened and helpless as they feel when you’re relating deeply to them juxtaposed with the deep-seated struggle of understanding what it is to be with someone you love so much but your mental health is burning quiet holes in your ability to express it in a way that can be understand. Ryan’s fierce determination, breaking through the silence of their non communication is really Everything to me in this fic. i think I really left my heart in the scene in Shane’s parents kitchen. That finished me. Read this fic and understand the deep relief you get when you’ve finished a fight with someone you fiercely care about and they understand you and you understand them and it’s OK; it’s gonna be all right. Augh.

Review: Let me just quote my bookmark comment here. Usually I flee from tragedy like a cat spotting a cucumber but the brevity and the prose dragged me in and now I’m a functioning mess. Bless this fic. Oh my god it’s short and reads like one of those quick horror stories you’ll read to your friends just as the scary stories are transitioning from the urban legends to the ones that feel real. Big warning for main character death but still read it if you appreciate a good story told.

Summary: Failed suppressants and a surprise heat: the worst of cliches, and here Ryan stands, living the trope on location with the alpha he’s hopelessly in love with. Even worse, they’re spending the night in the famous Bell Witch Cave, completely alone and with no way to contact the outside world.

Ryan knows he can survive and keep his preheat a secret, as long as Shane will stop being so protective and concerned. After all, it’s not like Shane wants to bond with him.

Review: Now judging from the reactions of many people I’ve spoken to, big heavy ABO kink is not popular here but guys, GUYS. This one. Let this one in I promise it is not what you think it is. The dynamic is organic and the worst side of the trope is subverted in all the best ways and lord help us, the smut is hot, like swelteringly smoking. It’ll stay with you.

Summary: Some demons and otherworldly creatures love climbing up the power ladder. Shane is not one of these. He likes where he is (thank you very much) and has no interest in moving up. All he wants is to give his friend Ryan a nice birthday gift. So, naturally, everything goes to hell.

Review: This fic is another fandom legend. When I think demon!Shane. It’s this and one other one that always pops right into my mind. This was my first exposure to the bureaucracy meets the supernatural!Shane trope and I was sold from the get-go. The Shane in this fic is everything I imagine a demon!Shane is and his ginger care for Ryan, the concept of their bond and how even though Shane is a demon and responsible for keeping the supernatural a firm secret from Ryan and the rest of the world, his skepticism is relayed through his status as a demon. I want to talk more about it but I think so much of the enjoyment comes from the surprises as the plot unfurls. 

Heartbeat by quackers

Summary: So the guy Ryan sits next to at work is a vampire. That’s no big deal, right?

Review: I could talk your literal ear off about this fic. Vampires, man. I love the trope; you don’t know me as a person if you don’t know this at least. And this fic kept me fed all damn year. It was a readable garden. If there is one thing I can guarantee about quackers’ work, it’s that their world-building is a festival of detail. The realms and alternate universes they work with while still managing to keep Shane and Ryan’s voices so familiar and real is a talent not attributed to your everyday author. This fic propelled me into wanting to write more and more because quackers makes stories so much fun! Reading their work is, to me, not unlike the feeling I got when I was younger and finding series that speak to my need to escape this crummy existence, made me want to believe in fun spicy things like a vampire that lived through centuries, cynical but still searching, navigating a world where people are still people, adjusting to differences and prejudices, finding comfort in a guy that understands that and more. I’ve talked about this fic in more than a few different posts so I’d just be reiterating a lot of things I loved about the more historical aspects of Shane’s journey, the way Ryan is so firmly curious and inventive in ways to connect with Shane. Look, even if vampires aren’t your thing, I can promise that if you visit quackers list of work, you will find something for your supernatural-lovin’ palate that speaks to a gentler side of your own curiosity about monsters and the jocks that love them. lol.

I’ll Crawl Home by carrieonfighting

Summary: “Shane was almost unnerved by how quickly he’d settled into this body, this name, this life - his friendship with Ryan was the most time he’d spent with any human before, and yet the man fascinated him.”

Review: This is the second fic I think of when someone says the words ‘demon!Shane’ to me because ohhhh my word, this fic is a masterpiece. I really am hard pressed to find anything better than the feeling I get when I think of demon!Shane headcanons interwoven with the irl Buzzfeed reality and the idea of the Ryan as we know him being protected and watched and loved so deeply by a demon that found him so long ago and wanted nothing but to protect him. I feel an almost vicious glee reliving that moment when Ryan and Shane are on goatman’s bridge and man, I just really love canonical fic mixed with a slight twist. The writing in this makes it work so well with lines that still haunt my heart and soul like “Ryan liked popcorn. So did the demon. Genuinely, not just out of a desire to please the human – he liked the way it crunched between his vessel’s teeth. There were some aspects of taking a corporeal form that were…nice; laughing, coffee, feeling warm. Ryan made him laugh.” FUCK! The beautiful agony of it, watching the demon fall in love with Ryan through the eyes of his vessel. Just stark with pain and unspoken, well-written angst and pain with a perfect ending, I wouldn’t change for anything. I love this for us as a fandom and will always love that author crafted this piece and shared it with us. (Also every time I hear Work Song by Hozier, I think of this fic again and sigh).

So this ended up being too big to fit into one post and I have a problem with giving too many descriptions/ideas/etc so I’ll be chopping my AU up into more bitesized pieces. A LOT. After the cut, because if it wasn’t it’d literally destroy your dash. Just be warned that if you open this up there’s like, a whole paragraph for each character mentioned. (or more)

The Tailtwined!AU is based around another AU that I have yet to find a fitting name for, and everything is generally the same story-line (he still goes through regions in the same order, wins Alola’s league, etc) wise except for one crucial plot detail: The night before Ash’s defeat in Sinnoh’s league, the Sandgem town Pokelab burns down with people still inside; though Ash is upset by all of this, the thing he’s most upset about is Gary’s death/disappearance. 

Because there should be a reason other than “he went up against Mythical and Legendary Pokemon” because that was such a cop-out for the anime. And also, yay! Angst and death (seriously where did Gary go??) 

Also I’ll be cherry-picking stuff from the mangas, anime, and games and shoving them all together but I’ll try and keep it simple and not confuse too many people. The focus is currently on the timeline of Pokemon 2019/Journeys, so all of the characters up to that point that are main/side (that show up in more than one episode or are important in the games) will show up. 

Notable information: 

TEAM ROCKET IS A BIG. DEAL. Team Rocket has reached across the globe: Police officers that aren’t Officer Jenny or Nanu or people like Looker; Gym leaders like Sabrina and Koga, Elite four members like Will and Karen. 

-People in this AU work a lot like the Wolf Children movie. Not in the fact that they can completely turn into animals, but in the fact that their features contort when they get angry or overly emotional. Most can grow claws and it is actually a sport in Galar for people to train themselves into their more animal-like forms and then fight. Outside of the ring it is frowned upon, but stuff happens. 

-People with domestic animals’ features are much more common in this AU, with exotic features being more uncommon/rare. Big Cats and creatures like Wolverines are examples of this. 

-Royalty and high ranking trainers like Champions and Elite four members are extremely likely to be non-domestic, but it’s not like common people have never managed to become Champion/E4 before. 

Kantonian-based characters: 

-Ash himself would be long-furred Birman based, with white ears and tail that are umber-tipped. This is a bit more uncommon to see but by no means the rarest of the domestic breeds. I headcanon that he has dyed it before, probably red to match his clothing, or yellow to twin with Pikachu. (Dying fur is also a statement of mourning if done correctly.)

-Gary and his father, Blue, both have a Russian Blue’s ears and tail: Their fur is quite a deep grayish-blue, but Gary’s is lighter than his father’s. Blue isn’t around in this AU, but I thought I’d mention it anyway. This type of domestic cat would be one of the more rare because it’s a recessive gene; the likelihood of Gary inheriting Blue’s cat breed was very slim but it happened anyway. Gary himself is rather vain when it comes to his fur and he's constantly picking leaves and sticks out of it, making sure it's completely pristine. 

-Gary’s Mother (also not in the picture because she wasn’t in the anime/games/etc) and Daisy (Gary’s sister) are short-haired cream tabbies. Daisy is much more prominent in this AU because she’s in the games and manga. She was hit hard by Gary’s disappearance and that made her Professor Oak’s only remaining family. 

-Professor Oak himself has solid brown ears/tail, but he was also one of the few “common-folk” who became Champion of Kanto. His fur is normally matted and it is more dull than it used to be, but he still tries to take care of it. He’s just really forgetful and also extremely busy with other things. 

-Delia also has Birman features, but her fur is longer than Ash’s. She used to be a Pokemon Trainer in this AU, but she quit when she got pregnant with Ash, and most of her Pokemon went to be with Professor Oak. 

-I know we’re taking a huge leap here, but Giovanni’s cat-like are based on a tiger's. His ears are rounded like a tiger’s. Giovanni used to be the pinnacle of attractiveness, but as the years wore on his fur began to fall out. His tail is patchy and discolored despite attempts to keep it clean and tidy, and painful fur-implants didn’t help at all. Whenever Giovanni has to make appearances, he usually makes it so no one can see his tail because his ears are mostly untouched. 

-When someone’s soul or aura becomes corrupted, their body is no longer able to regulate hormones needed to keep their fur looking glossy, so it falls out and becomes frazzled/ugly. It is worse for those with a large amount of radiating Aura (think Sir Aaron or Ash or in this case, Giovanni.)

-Instead of Red being Ash’s father in this AU, Red is Delia’s sister. His ears and tail are Calico, and he--like most male Calico cats IRL--can't have biological children. Male calico anthros are just as rare as their real life counterparts. He is the one who defeated Professor Oak and became the next Champion of Kanto. 

-Jessie's fur is long and white, but she dyes it completely to match her red/purple hair. She's extremely vain and when not stealing Pokemon or messing with Ash, she's grooming her tail or getting someone else to do it for her. 

-James is similar to Jessie in the fact that he dyes his fur to match his hair, but he comes from a rich and higher-calibre family so he's a white tiger anthro. His family usually exclusively marries other white tiger anthros. His fur is constantly messy and it drives Jessie and Meowth insane. 

-Misty  has a Spaniel's ears and tail, perfect for swimming. Her ears and tail are tri-colored with white, brown, and black. She's still Cerulean City's gym leader, and she still tries to keep in touch with Ash the best she can but he ignores her calls most of the time. Brock and her are always hanging out when she's not busy with the gym.

-Brock is the visualization of a scruffy village dog. He has a long brown tail with fur as wild as you'd like to imagine, and his ears are floppy and brown with the tips being white. That's not a good look for a healthcare professional, so he straightens the fur without too much issue. 

-Tracey, though he doesn’t have a super big part of the main story, has a Great Pyrenese’s ears and tail. Because his fur is white and he’s an artist, there’s always a large array of colors displayed on his coat.

The Thing about Furries

This is literally me thinking to myself and putting it online under the guise someone else might care enough to read it, so really there’s no actual point to this, feel free to ignore.

Also obviously I just gotta say people can do whatever the hell they want as long as it isn’t hurting someone else in some way. Also, this is pretty much exclusively about the character design aspects of furry-ism and not the IRL aspects anyways.

So my brother just introduced me to Beastars (even though I’ve known about it for a long time because internet) and after being super insanely into Animal Crossing and other junk, it feels like I have to piece together my thoughts about “furry” characters because it’s funky. Like, insanely funky. Everyone agrees that it’s funky too, which is weird. Usually some people are just making it funky for laughs/dismissiveness but no, here it’s pretty universally funky.

First of all, the definition for the purpose of talking about it. Let’s just say a “furry” character is an animal character with distinctly human traits and talks. For the sake of scope, since the term “funky” made me think of it, Donkey Kong is a furry character. Thumper from Bambi is a furry character. Obviously all the characters from Beastars, Animal Crossing (non-humans), Zootopia, and pretty much all Disney properties where the main character is an animal is a furry character all involve furry characters. One thing I won’t say is a furry character are animal sidekicks that don’t talk, even though they emote like human beings, like Moana’s pig or something. Pokemon aren’t either, outside of Mystery Dungeon stuff obviously. Anything can be turned into a furry character via fanart, but canonically, let’s just say they’re not. This is probably the funkiest part of furry-ness but yeah, I honestly think the one threshold that separates “furry” from “non-furry” is whether or not they talk. I don’t know what it is, it just feels like characters that talk cross the line. It’s basically a nonsense term that can be whatever you make it anyway so who cares, but that’s how I’ll be thinking about it. Also, I’ll never use the term “furry” in a derogatory sense. I’ve never really thought of it as being anything other than a descriptor, not anything with inherent goodness or badness to it, like calling someone a “construction worker” or something. Also “scalies” are just “furries” under another name. Reptiles are still furry as far as I care.

So the age-old question, am I a “furry?” Honestly I think I’m not, because even though I do obviously like furry characters, it’s not like a super big part of my likes. I basically just like good character design and appealing characters, some of which are furry. If I became a “furry” just for that, millions of other people would then become “furry,” basically making the term useless.

Doesn’t really matter though, I just wanna talk about furry character design, because it’s a seriously mixed bag. It’s like a bag filled with lettuce, marbles, and volcanic rock. That’s probably the reason why so many people are into it, since it gives characters a relatable anchor (animals) but can shoot them off in so many different directions that there’s inevitably something for everyone. You can either choose to make them basically humans with animal heads, like in Beastars, super magical and cute like in My Little Pony, or… whatever’s going on with Sonic characters.

I feel like the over-under of “good” furry character design is tweaking the biology of the animal in question without straying too far, and if you do go far, then it’s either relevant to the story of the character or just a thing with all furry characters in the world. For example, horses aren’t pink. But, in My Little Pony, they are, because horses can be any color, and so on. And, ya know, apart from that, just the usual character design stuff, like good color use and whatnot. Frankly the stuff I hate most about “bad” furry design is just “bad” character design, and not really relevant to the furry-ness of the character. It’s just cherry-picked correlation, not actual causation. Human characters can be just as bad as furry characters, there’s just a lot less to change in humans, so some people think the openness of furry design causes bad design when there’s just a lot more left up to the creator.

To be honest I think the pinnacle of furry character design is Zootopia. I feel like one of the big things people like to do is associate people/character traits with animals, like thinking someone’s a weasel for being super cunning and witty, or if someone’s a lion for being super powerful-feeling and proud. Zootopia, I think, manages to not only represent that in the structure and stature of its characters, but really implant a human face on to an animal. When you look at a Zootopia character, you can almost see someone you know in that face. Maybe that’s just standard in most cases, but it feels really present here. As for the character traits of animals, obviously it’s kinda rich pointing that stuff out in a story explicitly going against all that, but in terms of visual design I think we should think of the associated traits of an animal and pair that with their actual biology to an extent. For example, the ungulate characters have pretty thick bodies with thin legs with really pronounced knees. You know, like ungulates. They don’t have human proportions because they’re basically just animals with the stature and culture of humans. I think Nick is one of the big examples of a really easy and good trait to have in furry characters, that being having pretty short legs relative to a long body. 

Humans have really, really long legs compared to everything else. That’s why no one walks on all fours on the soles of their feet, because our arms are so much smaller than our legs, meaning we have to shuffle along on our knees. Animal legs are different. Also, just basic things like size difference and such are basically a given. Rabbits are small. Water buffalo are big. Shrews are even smaller than rabbits. For the most part, you shouldn’t stray too far from basic size differences. Obviously Nick probably would be a bit taller than he is in that case, but since he’s a protagonist he kinda gets a more limited pallet for the sake of wider appeal.

Also, one of the big things about Zootopia that really makes it the best is how society adapts to different biologies. Zootopia itself is so goddamn colorful and diverse, because even the most diverse cities in the real world are only gathering up people of different skin colors, ethnicities, locations, etc. Zootopia has to account for so many different biologies, and the designers really didn’t limit themselves there. Even little things like food stands having a little elevator to get drinks up to giraffe-height really make the world. Obviously they would separate the different biomes, but each biome still having bizarre little bits of technologies in it makes it amazing.

So with that all said, I must hate Beastars, right? I mean, they’re just humans with fur and animal heads. Well, I’m just as surprised as you are, because I actually kinda didn’t mind it as much as I thought. Obviously I’d take a Zootopia over a Beastars any day, but it wasn’t really that bad for character design purposes. Other critiques aside. I mean, the one big thing of size difference is still there, so it doesn’t feel completely lost that these are all animals with different biologies. Plus, I think the big thing is that their animal parts are still very animalistic, and not the usual “furry” design liberties, and that they at least extend well downward into their human parts. For example, in the first episode, that one parrot girl really caught my eye because she still looked like a parrot. What we could see of her arm still looked parrot-like. But, then, what about everyone else who basically is just a furry human with an animal head? 

One of the big, BIG things that turns me off with most furry media is how serious things are. They’re talking animals, Jim. I get you want them to have a super edgy backstory with tons of death and trauma but they’re animals. My brain can’t just shake that thought, and since a lot of my least favorite stuff is super edgy and etc I just get turned off to the idea. Movies like Zootopia fix that by being like “Haha, talking animals am I right guys? Oh by the way there’s a government-funded drug cartel trying to frame carnivores as monsters in order for herbivores to rise above them in power.” If the makers toy with the idea of talking animals being funny/cute/fantastical/etc, then they can implant the serious seeds that make a good story. Things like the Warrior Cats series (my sister’s brand) don’t feel like they strike that chord before they go on to tell a super serious story, so I get lost in the mess (Or at least that’s how fan works seem to go, I’ll probably never read the original books, let’s be real. If they’re not like that then just imagine that as being a critique of fan works). So, what about Beastars? I feel like making the animals so human is absolutely necessary in telling their serious story. Plus, since the animal parts are so much like actual animals, it feels much more like “this is a character represented by an animal” instead of “this is a talking animal” sort of thing. By not making things so cartoonish, they can tell a less cartoonish story. I’m still not super into it but it does work. I’m into cartoons as a whole tho, so I’ll always take cartoons over basically anything else. 

 Now, I want to talk about hands. Choosing whether to give a furry character hands is the turning point in design philosophy. Obviously mammals are probably going to have hands no matter what, because we associate most with them, and they kinda-sorta have fingers, but what about fish? Finding Nemo characters… sort of have hands? They will definitely try to pick things up as much as possible (i.e. Marlin caressing Nemo’s egg) but they don’t actually “grab” things. But, sure, their fins can feel like hands to a human because they’re sorta-kinda in the same location. 

What about wings? Guardians of Ga'hoole has probably the greatest furry bird character design of all time. I HATE it when character designers try to turn feathers into fingers. Probably exclusively because of this movie, but still. I can’t praise this movie enough for sticking to its guns in not only keeping an owl’s actual claws as its hands, and wings only staying something secondary for gestures and stuff, but also for designing WEAPONS for OWLS. Again, they are talking animals, but like… They transcended the thought of it being funny and cute and instead led us into thinking they’re totally badass, because, let’s be honest, birds are probably the most badass of all animals. They fly, have sharp hunting skills, a piercing gaze… and, ya know, are descendents of dinosaurs. They can even be super cute if need be. Did I mention they can fly? That’s like their main thing that mostly only they can do. Not sure if you’ve heard, but flying’s pretty cool. But, yeah, whatever, keeping a bird’s hands to its claws is basically necessary I’d say, unless you want to go the Sonic route and not even give them wings in the first place. 

What about something that doesn’t even have limbs? Snakes are even more bonkers than birds. If an alien came to Earth and the first thing they saw was a snake slithering around they’d probably pack up and leave because their petty minds weren’t vast enough to imagine a thing moving so elegantly and so, like clandestine-ly? Like, just by looking at them, you really can’t imagine how the hell they move. Anyways, this is starting to turn into me gushing about animals… We all have seen that one tweet of that one rattlesnake character from Rango being called one of the coolest character designs, and by golly they’re totally right. Snakes are a place for character designers to flex their imaginary muscles because of how weird they are. What if we get a snake, but… instead of a rattle (which is already a crazy biological feature let’s be real) let’s give him a prosthetic GATLING GUN instead. And also like a gigantic-rimmed hat. That is unreasonably cool. Again, snakes are badass, so instead of having to convince us that it’s all fun and games they can very easily be like “Don’t mess with that guy, he’s a snake” and pull out some seriousness from that.  But, as the internet will surely convince you, snakes are also weirdly cute sometimes. Sometimes so cute you have a crisis of faith. Back to Ga'hoole, the nursery mother snake character there might just be one of the cutest snake characters ever. I still hold true that adults can be as cute as children/young people in the right circumstances, and she is a prime example of that. Also, can we just talk about Viper from Kung Fu Panda? Good God, what a character. I can imagine the board meeting: “Okay so we want a lovable cast of characters that do Kung Fu. We got the main Panda, a Tiger, a Crane, a Snake, a Praying Mantis, a…” “Wait, a SNAKE? How the hell are we supposed to make a snake do Kung Fu?” and then they fucking NAILED it. Not only is she a total cutie pie, but she has some of the best design direction of that entire, amazing franchise. Really, AAA western animation studio furry design is almost always killer. 

Now I want to talk about Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic is easily the Chaotic Evil of furry character design. What the fuck even are they? Imagine starting up a video game company and hearing this one guy come up to you like “I’ve got this game about a blue hedgehog with super speed and one weird inter-connected eyeball and gloves and he collects golden rings and turns Super Saiyan if he picks gets some magical gems” and suddenly he becomes the face of your entire company. I have no idea where all that came from. But, guess what? I still love it. I have no idea why, but it’s great. I mean, even apart from the usual things people say about him, like having a good silhouette and junk. Maybe he’s just been so ingrained in our society that it’s basically Stockholm syndrome, but I do like Sonic characters. I think the only issue I have with the character designs is that some are a little too similar in the face/body (I think Espio and Charmy should look a little stranger imo), but for the most part they’re great. It’s even really refreshing when you do get some character that strays from the normal body type, like Big the Cat, Vector, or that one grey hawk guy from Sonic Riders. My favorite of the games is Cream and Cheese, mainly because she’s a cute rabbit with a Chao (the best part of the Sonic franchise hands-down) but I think the “best” from all forms of media is Tangle from the comics. She has the necessary gumption and sportiness you’d expect from a sonic character, while still looking interesting, but not looking too out of left-field, and also having a super iconic and relevant trait (a giant, fluffy tail. Gotta love those) that has a unique use. One day they will make a game using the comic characters and that day shall be a glorious day. I seriously think the art of the comics is amazing, even though I haven’t actually read much of it myself. I’d definitely give it a shot if given the chance though.

Although, you really can’t talk about furry characters without mentioning porn at least a little bit. At this point it kinda forgoes design and is just a personal preference sort of thing, as you’d probably expect. Porn’s like that. But really, for me, I think any kind of non-human genitalia is actually disgusting. Literally, any excuse to put human dicks on something is a good one. I’m not gonna go into detail, but wouldn'tcha believe some people genuinely are into the idea of having large, human-sized breasts in the same areas as a normal animal’s nipples, i.e. around their hind legs? I mean, anything’s possible, but it’s just… yeah… No. I don’t even want to talk about the various shapes of animal “anatomy.” It’s not fun, and the less I have to think about it the better I am. Obviously if a character’s human enough it’s fine, but I just can’t stand the biology of some of it. Like, how would you fuck a snake? How do they even do it in the first place? My brain just doesn’t conceive of it, and as such it’s not in my purview. But, one things for sure, you are NOT a zoophile for liking furry porn (even if the characters in question don’t stand up on two legs). That’s an entirely different beast, and it’d be nice if people stop pretending like it’s at all relevant here.

The last thing that’s sort of a preferential thing for me is toe beans. I just can’t stand them. It’s like one step below nauseating for me, and I have no idea why. It makes it infinitely harder to enjoy furry stuff because of it, because it seems people are universally for them, both in a weirdly pornographic sense, and in just a cuteness sense. Even the cutest possible depictions of toe beans still make me want to shrivel up inside. Maybe that’s why I like rabbits so much… They’re too fluffy to show them, whether or not they actually have them in the first place.

But yeah, furries. Of course I have a fursona. He’s been in the works for ages because I never feel like I can get him exactly right. Chances are he’ll break off into a separate character like my last attempt.

I’ll be quite honest. I’m terrible at being in communities.

This is a huge TLDR/personal post and seriously, you can ignore. That’s not some manipulation tactic. It’s here for people who want to know genuinely why I keep coming/going the last two years and where my inconsistency is coming from, as well as why I run headfirst into the community and then just disappear without warning.

Sims posts will follow. This is just something I felt I needed to talk about. In short: yes I’m fine. Yes I’m handling things well. No I don’t need crisis care. I’m actually doing well considering. Sims has always been my go-to comfort. I didn’t know about the community until I met @invadersim many moons ago on LiveJournal, and Tumblr was in it’s infancy. As well as the things mentioned under the cut, I also feel like I’ve withdrawn from social media a lot since I turned 30 (I’m 31 now). I just stopped needing to belong and sort of settled in where I was at. Like I said, Sims have been my comfort. Sometimes I sit on Facetime with another IRL friend who also Sims and we just chat like one would on Skype only with our games running and Facetime going on our iPads. It’s fun. She discovered my game is utter chaos incarnate while she micromanages everything. She likes hearing me talk about my builds. I like hearing about the random TV show characters in her game that she tosses in (like the shenanigans her Dean Winchester Sim gets up to). Sims, to me, is ‘home’. The place you return to on holidays when you’ve been away to school or the warm cup of tea waiting for you during a cold, snowy day. Sims is my home away from home - when other games have frustrated me, or when my mental health is doing poorly and I either cannot focus on anything or I’m too depressed or anxious to do much at all. Which, leads into the TLDR portion.

So my last time posting was August I believe. I had just installed TS4 for the first time and was leery. I’ll say this now: I fucking love TS4 and probably won’t go back to fix my TS3 game ever to play it. It became my new go-to comfort and I’m loving that I am still learning things about TS4 that I didn’t already know. With TS3, I knew so much about the game that it started to become boring. I was always adding mods and CC and then just doing the same old boring shit in my games.

Right now I don’t have “Cats and Dogs” but I have everything else, so it’s forcing me to play the rest of the game without the addition of pets. It’s nice. I also don’t use much CC and I have only one core mod in my game (I don’t even use MC right now). It’s just nice playing a completely vanilla game. I can think of a dozen things I want to recolor (and thanks to @blindingechoes teaching me now, I likely will sometime early 2018) but otherwise I’m enjoying things again: enjoying building. Enjoying the gameplay. Enjoying how smoothly things run. But that’s not really why I’m posting. I’ve had my inbox filled with worried messages and I want to address things for those who don’t have me on Facebook already.

Yes I’ve been dealing with a malignant narcissist and yes this person was once a close friend, and yes I knew they truly had diagnosed sociopath behaviors but I also knew them for so long that I had the totally naive thought of it could never be me. The thing with abuse is, the second you think that? It’s likely already too late. I should’ve seen things coming and I didn’t until it was too much at once and I decided to cut this person out (their version of the story is that they cut me out first which is not true, and I have ‘receipts’ to prove this).

This person did truly heinous things to me between the end of January 2017 until October 2017, when things finally stopped. I won’t get into major detail (though this post is marked so anyone browsing in safe mode won’t get to see it, I feel a lot of people following me are slightly younger and I don’t feel anyone really needs to know details) but some of the things done to me over nine months were: having my personal info (name, address, phone number, mother’s name - who is sick (she’s had many strokes and lives with me so I can take care of her) - as well as her personal number posted (ie, doxxing) online to a website which is notorious for some crimes in the past (members who met up and literally plotted to kill their families and succeeded). It’s home to a lot of skeevy, disgusting people and this person literally outed my personal information to thousands of people who are potentially dangerous.

From that moment on I spent three months having child pornography, gore porn/snuff, gory images of dead animals and the type of stuff you’d find on Rotten or Ogrish on my damn phone - being texted daily - by throwaway numbers. I reported this to my phone company and blocked all the numbers I could but it didn’t stop. I did everything I could but in the end I was the one who was losing their phone service as a result of “breaching telecommunications laws” and had to pay a fine of 400-something dollars (I forget the exact amount, I do have copies of the legal docs though), as well as paying to have my phone turned back on.

I acquired paperwork for a restraining order but couldn’t serve it until recently. I have been working with a defamation and libel lawyer pro bono to get this person to leave me alone. They’ve made threats to “skin my cat”, to “throw acid on me in the street” as well as to have one of their junkie friends who is HIV positive “throw their used needles at them like darts”. I have copies of the messages where these discussions and plans were made.

Cops most definitely were notified. It has been a huge drawn out process and they’re basically claiming they’re “mentally ill and won’t go to jail” even though they’ve been harassing and abusing me for nine months straight. There is so much more than what I posted above but needless to say, when this all became really freaking bad I just left the internet. I stopped posting on a lot of places and that was when I came back to the Simblr community then promptly left again.

Around this time I started prepping for Preptober which is the month of October where those of us who do Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) start prepping for November and our novel. On October 29th, right before the Kick Off party our Nanowrimo region holds, our ML (Municipal Liaison) -and close friend of mine- was found at his home unresponsive by another writer friend and after being taken to hospital by them, was found to have three brain tumors. The primary cancer ended up being in his kidneys (three more tumors) and the secondary cancer was the tumors in his brain. He went for surgery immediately and his current treatment is radiation as palliative care. I don’t think I need to explain more where this is going.

November was busy as I had to step up as ML and run a region of 200 writers where we had write-in’s (where you go to write with a group of Wrimos, or what we call Nanowrimo participants) leaving me running these groups 6 days a week (I took one day off) from 6-9pm and sometimes two in a day (9am-12pm, then 6pm-9pm). I have severe agoraphobia and social anxiety so you can imagine how difficult this was. While mentally and physically exhausting (it also screwed with my sleep schedule which is already a mess from a sleep disorder) it was one of the best November’s I had in awhile because I had always wanted to be ML but it was legit so fucking exhausting I had no time for anything else.

No gaming. No Sims. No social media. Nothing. Things have sort of evened out now but since it’s December I’m back to feeling irrevocably depressed (holidays always do that as I’m 1) poor, literally at the poverty line despite being on disability so I can’t afford anything for myself or others at Christmas and this also means no celebrations with dinner or decorations because all of my money is spoken for. As well I have no where to go/no family to be with.

Secondly, I’m finally catching up on the screwed up sleep schedule of November. As a result I’m sleeping 20 hours a day sometimes. I’m awake maybe 10-12 hours and back to sleep again. It’s terrible. I also had walking pneumonia all of November and I’m still sick from that. It’s a huge clusterfuck and things were just terrible. If it wasn’t for coping skills from CBT and DBT I seriously don’t know how I would’ve managed the last year.

ON THE PLUS THOUGH - even though this month is hell and I’ve no where to go, I’m playing the Sims again and plan to post screenshots and random things and re-engage with the community as much as possible. If you read it this far, you’re awesome and thank you.

In terms of uploads and such, I won’t have anything for awhile. I’m using a pirated copy of the game as I have no way to buy it online from Origin (I’ve no money to be spending on gifts and I don’t expect it as a gift or anything so it’s not likely something I’ll be owning legitimately for quite some time). The game version I have doesn’t get updated often and I don’t want to risk breaking my game and having to do a huge re-install just to add “Cats and Dogs” as well as game client updates so I can’t be sure anything I create or recolor will work with your guys’ games.

My requests this year are particularly queer-focused (as in they all involve canon queer characters, which \o/) and I have a lot of love for all of them; so if you get stuck on the fandom we matched on, the other two may also be up your alley as well. Both The Get Down and American Gods have only one season, and Captive Prince is a trilogy which is a fairly quick read.

Captive Prince (Damen, Laurent)

Ahhhhh, I just have so many feelings about these two and their impossible, slow, perfect development. SO MANY. They’re the sort of pair whose relationship is just so satisfying and well-earned and who complement each other so perfectly, despite rubbing against each other in all the wrong ways through so much of their relationship. It’s the sort of thing where I could read their story in a thousand different ways through a thousand different AUs and be totally, wholly content. And I want all of those stories! All of them! So a lot of my ideas listed below here are heavily AU-centric, both canon and non-canon based.

Some ideas to throw against a wall:

Mermaids, selkies, daemons, that mysterious witch in a blue dress that people in the city keep whispering about

I know this is already a fantasy series, but I kept craving more fantasy elements while reading, so add some dragons, high fantasy, whatever have you to the canon universe and I will be pleased as punch

Non-traditional a/b/o - while I love a/b/o in general, any sort of twist or subversion is basically my ultimate iddy happy place - Damen/Laurent alpha/alpha AU anyone?? Or any other way you’d like to imagine it.

For the more canon-inclined, that’s awesome too! I realize a lot of my random ideas above are complete AUs, but I love canon fic as well. I particularly love divergence scenarios — not just major ones of the Auguste Lives type, but what if some small moment in canon happened differently, or didn’t happen at all? So much good stuff to explore there. Role reversal canon AUs, outsider POV and missing scenes are always awesome as well. Whatever sandbox you find most fun to play in really :D

The Get Down (Dizzee)

I also requested this last year, and after the second half of the series, my request is still largely the same. One of the things I love about this show is that sense of the city in the 70s, the visceral feel of it, and how it was so well-done and it left me craving more — particularly more of Dizzee’s story.

(Confession: I am a New Yorker, which is part of why I loved this so much, but I was born about a decade after this takes place and in a different part of the country than where I now call home — so please don’t worry about me nitpicking historical details ;))

While we did get to see more of Dizzee in the second half of the series, I’m still hung up on that one scene with him from the first half of the series (the one where he goes with Thor and the other girl to the club) and that is probably completely responsible for this request. It hit me like a pound of feels straight to the chest. Queer culture in the 70s, the underground balls, the music, the voguing, drag, and everything else. GAH. And watching Dizzee navigate all that, open his mind to everything around him and recognize himself, so much love. And the way the scene fits in with the shows overall themes, how so much creativity and how new genres can come out of oppression, the way all these different groups and sounds interacted and fed off each other, which is so rarely acknowledged anymore. Anything that explores any of this will be loved forever and ever.

I didn’t specifically request Thor because Dizzee is my main interest here, but I think he’s great too! Or the girl from the club — or both! However you want to approach it, my queer heart will be excited. You could write a continuation scene (porny or not porny), Dizzee getting deeper into queer culture afterwards, some introspection, or just the scene from the show as it happens from Dizzee’s perspective, anything really. Same with the scene from the second half of the season where Thor and Dizzee paint each other. And I have no drug or alcohol triggers, so if you really just wanted to write 1k about Dizzee rolling his ass off tbh, I’d love to read that too.

Much more so than I usually request, this one really is a lot about the setting for me. Having said that, if you wanted to do it as a some sort of dystopian AU with similar themes and Dizzee as the focus, I’d read the shit out of the that. So much. (As an example — feel free to insert other AU compulsions if that’s your thing.) And I think there are a lot of awesome characters in the show, particularly the moral greyness of so many of them, but the queer themes of Dizzee’s story admittedly resonate with me on a much more personal level; please do feel free to include as many or as few of the others as you see fit!

American Gods (TV) (The Jinn, Salim)

I have been an enormous fan of the book since it originally came out and have reread it many times over the years; needless to say I am so unbelievably happy with the show so far and how they’ve chosen to expand upon and approach the original canon. Particularly, I love how they filmed the scene between these two characters, and then decided to give them a larger role in the series, which they didn’t have in the book.

For these two, I would love anything that explores their relationship, maybe what Salim was feeling or thinking when they met, how that sort of transcendent experience touched him, what his life was like afterwards as a cab driver in his new identity. Or something about his journey to find the Jinn again! How does he get there? What does he find at the end? What is their happily ever after? I’m so thrilled they’ve decided to go that route on the show, and can’t wait to see how it connects to the larger story. (As I’ve read the book, there is no need to worry about spoiling me if you would like to include details from future plots based on it; or go wild and go somewhere completely different! I’d love to read it all.)

The Jinn’s perspective would also be amazing: he’s been alive for so long, the things he’s seen, and he seems lonely when we meet him on the show? What has his experience/existence been like as a god, how has he seen history, particularly from a queer perspective, what does it mean to him when he meets Salim?

It would also be really interesting to see something that explored the mythological aspects of the show more -- or a complete myth AU! I think these two also lend themselves well to a lot of AUs and tropes in general and I’d love to read about all of them; if you wanted to raid any of the AUs or tropes above and go crazy that’d be amazing. Some kind of soulmates universe (with or without the mythology of canon), magical creatures of some kind, some sort of normal/modern AU, anything at all and anywhere you want to go, have at it!

Please feel free to include whatever canon characters you like; while I selected these two, I enjoy all of them and would be happy to see anything involving them. And while these requests lean more shippy, please make it as gen (backstory for either of the characters would be awesome) or as shippy as you’d like.
