Sebastian: Ominis is known to be self-abnegation when it comes to the pureblood mentality.

MC: self-abnegation?

Sebastian: It means renunciation of your own interest in favor of the interest of others. Essentially sacrificing a possession, right, title or privilege. Just know that in short, he's safe to be around with. Especially with the clout he carries as a Gaunt.

MC: *thinking to herself* Okay, at least I know what clout means*

After MC's first meeting with Anne and Uncle Solomon

Sebastian: My uncle is such an acrimonious person. I don't know how Anne can deal with him 24/7.

MC: Acrimonious?

Sebastian: Oh, Acrimonious. It just mean angry and bitter - like my uncle who you just met earlier.

MC: Huh, you learn something new everyday.

After MC finished a Keeper's quest with the graphorn fight with Sebastian unable to step in and help her as MC fought and tamed the graphorn. MC rides to Sebastian on the graphorn with a grin.

Sebastian: I swear MC, you have to be one of the most capricious people I've ever met! Did you really have to bend the knee? The Graphorn could've killed you- why are you taking a notepad out?

MC: Okay, tell me how to spell capricious and what does that mean?

Sebastian: This is capricious behavior MC! *points at MC as she is writing on her notepad* It literally means impulsive and unpredictable! And it's spelt c-a-p-r-i-c-i-o-u-s. Capricious. Why are you even writing this down?!?!

MC: What? You speak in SAT words and this is really going to help me out when I have to take that exam when I go back to the States during Spring Break! Huh, I guess it does pay to have a nerd as a friend *MC snicker as as she grins at him as she shows him her list of his SAT words he said since they became friends*

Was the purpose of this entire mini comic series (Especially part 3) because of panel 9?

YES***

Like Eda Mode's "NO CAPES!", growing up when I used to play sports in school we were not allowed to wear jewelry while playing.

And in my mind, magical dueling is as much of a sport just like any other individual 1-v-1 muggle sport.

When I first saw that duel between MC and Sebastian in which Prof. Hecat pits the two students against each other, I couldn't help but think that if that was me, out of habit, I would jump off the piste (in fencing terms, that is the fencing strip play area you would duel on and I would like to imagine that's also the magical name of the dueling strip play area since to me dueling is just the magical version of fencing) and immediately take my jewelry off because I have no wishes to become the next horror story of how wearing jewelry during sports caused an injury.

And hence why part 1, 2 and 3 of McStareface was born - all because of panel 9.

That's it.

That's the whole reason.

***That and to give a reason for Iñaki to call Sebastian "Stare-y McStareface" since she doesn't know his name yet. She essentially gave him the Boaty McBoatface type of nickname as a stand in until she learned his real name 😂. I needed to make part one in order to get part 2 and 3 where I wanted to be and for that nickname she picked for him to make sense. 🤣 This was more than 3 months in the making 😂🤣😂

You won't be catching Iñaki getting a dumb injury because of her jewelry, but unfortunately (or fortunately I guess in this case -depending which scenario you're looking at due to my MC coming from NY) most people (muggleborns and half-bloods who know muggle culture and seen American media) will probably see her taking her earrings as a sign she's going to get in a serious fight and she's not someone to not play around with. Especially since she's Latina and when you tell people that you're from New York, everyone automatically think's you're from the city lol. Ahh, stereotypes. I didn't mean to accidentally stumble upon it with Iñaki 😅😂.

(I mean she used to be from NYC before she moved to the 'burbs and turned to a suburban kid, but that's not the point XD)

While Iñaki isn't someone to play around, (she has ancient magic - not that anybody knows about it) she REALLY just doesn't want to get injured wearing jewelry while playing magical sports. Heck getting your earrings caught in either clothing, your comb or hair is painful (speaking from experience), I REALLY don't want to imagine how painful it will be in a sports injury. 😬

So she gives it to Natty to hold since she finds her new friendly classmate trustworthy enough to hold it. And Natty is all too pleased to help her new friend.

After all, Natty wants for her new friend, Iñaki, to destroy sweep Sebastian off his feet seeing how Natty couldn't defeat her number one nemesis in Crossed Wands yet. 🤗

Just a girl who wants to support another girl to destroy her dueling rival -just girly things, you know? 🤗🤭😁

Not that Natty is the only one who wants to see the undefeatable Sebastian Sallow go down.

Even if Iñaki doesn't know anything about his dueling record -heck, she doesn't even know who McStareface is- one thing she does know is that she's SOOOOO looking forward to returning the favor of his smack talk in a duel 🤗😁🤗

After all, it's “Perro que ladra no muerde”/ (A dog that barks doesn't bite) talk to her right now. And after her rough entrance to Hogwarts, Iñaki knows how to bite between the dragon, knights and everything not nice she had to face so far up to this point.

So a duel with McStareface should be fun. 🤗

McStareface Part 2 - Smack Talk

Sequel to McStareface

Sebastian went from McStareface to Mc"You-freaking-Dare"face in Iñaki's mind. Needless to say, her first actual interaction with Sebastian Sallow only lowers her impression of her classmate she dubbed as "McStareface".

While Iñaki isn't one to smack talk, she doesn't take it laying down. If it's an actual fight the other duelist wants, it's a fight the duelist gets.

And you can bet your bottom dollar that Iñaki is quick with her wand with spells flying off her lips! XD

#MCtober2024 - Week 3 Amortentia Potion pt 2

Amortentia Potion

To Iñaki, Sebastian smells like the following:

1: A campfire - from all the times he uses confringo during Crossed Wands. It was also one of the first spells he taught Iñaki. She always associates the campfire smell that comes from this spell with him.

2: A bookstore - from all the times they "hang out" in the restricted section in the library and just the library in general. Sometimes they hang out in the bookstore at Hogsmeade. At this point in their friendship, Iñaki always associates Sebastian with a book. He's ALWAYS reading in his free time.

3: Fresh cut grass - Sebastian had rejoined the quidditch team indirectly because Iñaki joined (and mainly his sister told him it will do him some good to do some of things he enjoyed before she was cursed in a letter she sent him. Anne also told him it also meant he'll be able to spend more time with her; that latter part was enough reason that he needed to rejoin the Slytherin quidditch team once more). Iñaki joined because Imelda somehow forced her to. Since Sebastian and Iñaki spend so much time together during training, it's hard for her to not associate Seb with the grassy smell of the Quiidditch Pitch when they first walk there to stretch and start training. At the time of the image seen here, Iñaki was knocked down by a rogue bludger and Sebastian found his favorite spot right after (once he realized Iñaki was okay 🤣). He's not moving and Iñaki is not pleased. It does become her favorite memory in the future.

#MCtober2024 -Meet Iñaki "MC" Martinez Cariaga

Based on @lamieboo's #MCtober2024 event (click on #MCtober for more info).

Note that she's from a Hogwarts Legacy AU that takes place in the late 2000s. Hence why she says Dungeon Snakes Rulez! (if you don't get the reference, it's from Fallout 3). She goes by "MC" since she doesn't want people to call her by her entire double surname. She's also trying to mimic that Spiderman graveyard meme pose here lol.

Iñaki hates potions in the US not because she's bad at it, but because of how careful and focused she tries to be to do well in the class. However, in the UK, she hate History of Magic due to Professor Binns. She loves Ancient Runes and DADA with Professor Hecat being her favorite due to the fact all the things they do in class matter for real life as well. That and she finds Hecat to be a cool teacher Professor.

Iñaki also tends to keep her wand in her hair bun. Most people think that's just a hair stick holding her hair up. Nope, just her wand lol.(More on Iñaki below the cut.)

Originally when she came to Hogwarts, she and Fig were late to the point that they missed her sorting and she was houseless for a week before she was allowed to be sorted.

In that time, she ended up befriending Amit, Poppy, Natsai and Garreth. She didn't care much for Sebastian, finding him too cocky during their first duel in DADA. While Iñaki found it easy to befriend people from the other houses, Slytherins didn't seem as opened to making friends.

Which would work in her favor.

When it came time to be sorted, Iñaki had a plan.

Seeing that she wasn't really going to be in Hogwarts/the U.K. for that long (3 years at most, a year at the least -which is something that she hopes for), Iñaki figured there was no point avoiding the invertible and just limit her interactions with people that she liked. She already had a hard time saying goodbye to her former friends when she temporarily moved to the U.K., she wasn't going to go through that again when she would finally move back home to the U.S. permanently.

When the sorting hat was placed on her head, she was a hat stall for either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff (to most people's surprise when they learned about it). She asked the hat to place her in Slytherin and had to convince the hat as to why. Iñaki would spend 5 minutes on the stool making her case as to why she should join the den of the snakes and ultimately the hat allows her to join Slytherin.

(The hat was impressed by her ambition to not make friends and trying to leave Hogwarts without leaving her own mark on the place or vice versa).

However, before the hat made its decision, it gave her a piece of advice saying:"...things aren't always as they seem. Take a moment to step back and see things as they are and not as you wish.", before it yelled out: SLYTHERIN.

It was a huge surprise to everyone since most people thought she would either be a Lion or a Badger due to her personality. There were even some bets about her being an Eagle, but barely anyone betted on her being a Snake.

Unfortunately for Iñaki, she didn't account certain variables for her plan to remain friendless in the den of snakes. Not with Imelda, Ominis and especially Sebastian as her housemates.

Tectonic Plates - Time Travel AU

I saw this post and it made me think of something.

Okay, so going back to the idea of Iñaki being an accidental time traveler stuck in 1890 and seeing a picture of Sebastian's lookout point in Feldcroft made me thing of something funny. Iñaki being from the future (late naught/2000s) knows about tectonic plates might mention on an off comment as a fun fact about the Highlands...of and it isn't until after she starts explaining to Sebastian about Tectonic plates....she realizes she runs into a new problem being stuck in the past.

(From my "A New York Yankee in Hogwarts' Courtyard, 1890" AU).

Iñaki: ...In fact, the Appalachian Mountains were once part of the same mountain ranges as the Scottish Highlands. It's the reason why a number of Scot-Irish immigrants settled in that region - aside from the cheap land, the place reminded them of home like what you see here in the Highlands. 🤓 *Iñaki smiles as she stares at the scenery* it also reminds me of home when I would go on hikes by the Hudson River. 🥹

Sebastian: Huh, that makes sense. 🤔 So in what year did this Alfred Wegener made this theory? 🧐🤓

Iñaki: He proposed the theory in 19- 😃😐🫤 *Freezes when she realizes she's about to spoil a future event (Alfred Wegener proposed the theory in 1912)* ...or was 25 years ago...umm...I'm not sure...I tend to forget small details like that after an exam hahah....🙃😅😓

Sebastian: *knowing Iñaki doesn't forget small details*🤨

Years later after Iñaki has mysteriously vanished (and Sebastian was unable to find her despite his best efforts) in the Year 1912, a 37 year old Sebastian reads the muggle newspaper and finds an article about the new Tectonic Plate theory.

Sebastian: How is this news? 🤨 Iñaki told me about the guy being in her his...tory....exam....wait a minute! 😶😐🫤😳

Meanwhile in the future:

Iñaki: Why do I get the feeling I need to go back in time and obliviate Sebastian? 😑

Meanwhile in the year 1912:

Sebastian: Ominis I'm telling you, Iñaki didn't go missing! She's from the future! My best friend still alive somewhere out there! 😃🤩 She told me about Alfred Wegener and tectonic plates before it was a thing!

Ominis: I thought we agreed she was secretly a seer! That makes more sense then for her to be a TIME TRAVELER! 😩Sebastian, this is the opposite of making peace with her disappearance! 😤🥺😢

Sebastian: She's Time Traveler! That's why we could never find her nor find any records of her in the States! 🤩

Ominis: Why would a time traveler even want to meet us? You're overthinking it Sebastian! 😩

Sebastian: She also said to not get on some ship called the Titanic. Remember how it sank earlier in the year? Back in April? She's a time traveler! 🤩

Ominis: Sebastian please.😩SHE. IS. SECRETLY. A. SEER! 😭

Excitement Hug

Needless to say, I'm very excited to see the Yankees win tonight. Since Iñaki is based off a bit of my younger self, I would image that in her excitement of finding out a Yankees victory in the World Series, she would hug-carries Sebastian with strength that surprises even him. So Here's a picture of Iñaki carrying Sebastian in her joy of her team winning! She's is just as bad to seeing the Yanks win as Imelda is to having Slytherin win in Quidditch lol.

#MCtober2024 - Week 3 Genderbent Potion & Animagus Form

Animagus Form - Jaguar

Iñaki's animagus form is a Jaguar. She had some animagus training before moving to the UK before 5th year and she finished her training under Natty.

When Sebastian found out that Iñaki was an animagus jaguar, he had to know how she would react to cat nip. Iñaki was certain she wouldn't get high and so the two tested it out in the Undercroft. Spoilers - she does get high as a jaguar.

And needless to say, Ominis walks in on the two and Iñaki is basically acting like this cats and this one while in her jaguar form. Ominis freaks out as to why was there was a big cat in the Undercroft until Sebastian explained to Ominis that Iñaki is a jaguar animagus. Unfortunately both Ominis and Sebastian end up spending the rest of their evening of trying to encourage Iñaki to shift back to human but she's too high off of catnip to even understand what they're are saying, chuffing the entire time (Jaguars chuff instead of purring; for more info check this out -> What is a CHUFF?).

In the end, Sebastian found a spell to force her to shift back to her human form, the catnip high immediately wore off and Iñaki was confused as to what just happened lol.

In reality, I was learning how to sketch it as realistic as possible and well...I drew a high jaguar since I wasn't able to figure out how to color in the eyes lol. But I'm happy how both jaguars turned out; I've never drew a jaguar before now - I spent a while looking at references of pictures, did some practice sketches and Disney's Lion King lion drawings to get the paws down the way I like it 😁

Genderbent Iñaki 

So, I headcanon that Iñaki wasn't hit by a genderbent spell like the prompt has. Rather, she was an unfortunate victim of Garreth's experimental potions that exploded on her while working as his supply courier, leaving her temporary a guy for a few days (Garreth wanted to make the polyjuice potion last longer then the small amount of time it lets people change form...instead he ended up making a genderbent potion that Iñaki was a poor victim along with him when it exploded over the two of them.) As for the Ecuadorian comment...this is what Iñaki is referring to: worlddata.info. Honestly, that's all I could imagine her saying with that second drawing I did of male!Iñaki 🤣

On the bright side, Iñaki is happy that's she actually tall at 5' 8'' ft/ 172.72 cm as a guy instead of being short at 5' 3'' ft/ 160 cm as a girl.

Although to be fair, it doesn't help that she hangs around Sebastian (5' 10'' ft/ 177.8 cm), Ominis (5' 11'' ft/ 180.34 cm), Natty (5' 6'' ft/ 167.64 cm) and Imelda ( 5' 5'' ft/ 165.1 cm) who are all taller than her. The only person she's taller than is Poppy who's 5' 0'' ft/ 152.4 cm! Iñaki doesn't care that she's still shorter than Sebastian or Ominis as a guy - she's just happy she doesn't need to stretch/get a stool step/climb/ask someone taller to get something on a higher shelf! Short people problems - am I right? 🤣

(Note: these heights are what I headcanon for the characters.)

Once thing about Iñaki is that if Sebastian really does get under her skin, she WILL pronounce his name in Spanish with the accent on the a (instead of calling him Sallow when she's annoyed with him). Now if she calls him by his full government name AND it's pronounced in Spanish?😶

...It's a good thing that is a rare thing to happen. 🤣

As for what would her name be if she was a guy? Well it would still be Iñaki since it's actually a boy's name in Spanish (everyone thought she would be a boy and when she was born and it turned out Iñaki was a girl, the name stuck and plus, anything that end with an "i" sounds feminine in English like Nikki, Traci, Demi... etc.. so Anglo-speakers wouldn't see anything odd with Iñaki for a girl's name 🤣).

(You can bet your bottom dollar that Imelda will make fun of Iñaki of how her name finally matches her gender in the Spanish-speaking world while she's a guy 😂)

#MCtober2024 - Week 2

What are your MC / OC study habits?

Iñaki has a few methods of studying as you can see above. She usually doesn't like to review in groups (unless its with trusted friends) until she feels comfortable with the material on her own where she knows what she doesn't know and can bring it up to the review session. While on her own, she'll either will use flash cards, rewrite notes or teach Uturunku (her jaguar plushie) in her shared dorm room. Eventually Imelda joins in on her teaching session with Uturunku since the two girls are in the same class and share the same dorm. Once she gets more comfortable with Sebastian and Ominis as friends, you would often find Iñaki in Undercroft studying with the two boys especially when Midterm Season hits and the library is packed. She would usually be sitting on cargo crate box reviewing her flash cards or notes, waiting for the boys to show up. She also like doing reviews on charms, spells and dueling techniques with Sebastian by physically practicing them in the Undercroft.

Her other known study locations is her dorm room or the Slytherin Common Room with Sebastian when burning the midnight oil, the Room of Requirements (not often since it's out of her way) and the Great Hall with her friends who are in the other houses. She also likes white noise the noisy Great Hall provides. Iñaki vs History of Magic

Iñaki hates Professor Binns. She thinks he's the most boring-est person in the planet with how monologuist, plain and calming his voice is and hates how he can knock her to sleep. It is her goal to actually sit through class and stay up completely for once and take notes, but she can't. She always knocks out if she's trying to focus and ends up becoming Ominis' pillow once the two are friends.

At least Ominis is kind enough to share his notes with her as he takes them with a bespelled diction quill that he'll later transfigure the notes into braille. Eventually Iñaki gets her own diction quill like everyone else in class does.

After a couple of classes with Prof. Binns, Iñaki will eventually accept that she's either going to nap in this class period or try to get ahead and do homework from her other classes with her enhanced earbud on to listen to music while her diction quill does the work of taking notes down.

Iñaki's Girl Crew

Iñaki becomes especially close to Natty, Poppy and Imelda for different reasons:

Natty is the first friend Iñaki made while at Hogwarts. She and Natty bond over living in a foreign country far from their homelands and learning to live in a different world. Natty's friendship is important to Iñaki because she is one of the few people who really gets what Iñaki is going through and the same is true vice versa. It isn't surprising to see one going to the other to have a good cry over missing their homeland. Natty also was the one who helped her finish her animagus training in secret and saw her transform into a jaguar for the first time. At one point, the two would go running in the Forbidden Forest in their animagus form, baffling any locals as to where a gazelle and a giant cat came from. Natty is also the first person Iñaki says is her friend.

Poppy's friendship with Iñaki began after defending the kneazle in class. After they partnered up in Beasts class that same day, the rest became history. Poppy enjoys Iñaki's frank and playful nature and Iñaki's enjoyed Poppy's bluntness and kindness (it reminds her of home). The two girls end up bonding over being oddballs, caring for beasts and going over the different magical beasts and their tales around the world. Poppy especially loves it when Iñaki tells her stories about the magical beasts native to the Americas that you wouldn't be able to find in Europe and ends up making it a goal to see the thunderbird that lives near Niagara Falls one day.

Imelda Reyes at first is Iñaki's roommate. For about five minutes until Iñaki grumbles in Spanish "¡Ay!¡Por el amor de Dios! after stubbing her toe against her misplaced suitcase as she was moving in a week later after arriving at Hogwarts. Imelda was surprised to learn that the American spoke Spanish. Iñaki didn't realize Imelda was Spanish (Imelda holds duel Scottish-Spanish citizenship) and spoke Spanish as well. They became friends like a house on fire due to their Hispanic heritage (Iñaki's family is originally from Latin America who immigrated to the US. Imelda's father was the one who moved their family to the UK when he went play on Puddlemere United to be close with them). They only speak Spanish to each other as it makes them feel at home as they both miss speaking it while at Hogwarts (There's very few Spanish speakers there). The two spend a lot of time talking about their Hispanic Heritage while comparing and contrasting the differences in the cultures (Iñaki' is bicultural as her Latino roots hails from two different countries) and the Spanish language as well.

When Imelda found out that Iñaki has family in South America (but didn't realize Iñaki was a first generation/muggleborn witch) she immediately assumed Iñaki was good at quidditch due to the sport culture in that continent (quidditch is essentially the magical equivalent to soccer/fútbol) and tricked her into trying out for the team in having Iñaki play in pick-up quidditch games since it didn't seem like she wasn't going to try out because she seemed nervous about it (in Imelda's eyes). The moment Iñaki realized what Imelda was doing, she calls Imelda out and the two end up having a frank discussion as to why Iñaki didn't play quidditch (American racism is the reason why - Iñaki didn't want to play into the stereotypes and found she couldn't really enjoy playing the sport back in New York) despite being good at it (Iñaki played with her first-generation/muggleborn mage cousins on both sides of the famiy as a kid and picked up the sport pretty fast). In the end Imelda helps Iñaki get over her prior reservations on playing the sport but not enough for Iñaki to play as a starter. Iñaki ends up playing as the reserve chaser though and ends up as a starter in sixth year during her last year at Hogwarts.

The four girls accidently become a friend group through a class project. Iñaki had them all meet at the Three Broomsticks to discuss what they would be doing and it spiraled to the four girls realizing they were outsiders in different ways as they talked about their lives and bonded over feeling like a fish out of water at times with their peers. They ended up making outing to the Three Broomsticks for lunch to be a weekly thing after their class project was done as all four became close friends with each other.

Because at 14, everything feels so long and permanent. Especially when the future is uncertain.

Honestly this was inspired by this post asking about your MC's boggart. I always figure that my MC's would fall into a more similar vein like Hermione where her boggart represents more of a symbol/idea.

When read up on reddit on Hermione's boggart was Professor McGonagall, someone pointed out saying that it's more of a symbolic thing when you look into it under a deeper light. With Professor McGonagall saying she failed all her classes, Hermione could get expelled from Hogwarts and get her wand snap. Essentially denying her from the wizarding world.

Since Hermione -a muggleborn witch- wants to belong in the wizarding world (when the muggle world rejected her), she is trying to prove that she deserve to belong in the wizarding world through her grades and by being at the top of her class. Hermione failing her classes could risk her getting kicked out and getting her wand snap. The McGonagall boggart failing her is symbolic of her true fear - belonging no where.

While Hermione a girl trying to belong somewhere and doesn't want to be kicked out, Iñaki is a girl who's afraid that she'll never go back home.
