The Owl House has Coven Heads But No Covens

Alador is a part of the abomination coven. He quite literally has to be because otherwise he's part of the Emperor's Coven and that makes issues with Amity going covenless SO MUCH WORSE. So, with that, here's a simple question: If his boss doesn't like his work, why can't he shut it down?

This is the core of the problem. Darius is a coven head. These coven heads are made out to be a big deal. A position you want to aspire to. They also work directly with Belos and presumably make some amount of input on decisions for how the Isles are run. They are Belos' cabinet effectively with what we see.

But on the flipside... What do they do? And potentially more importantly, what do their covens do? Terra is used to test Kikimora, an EC member. Grey uses EC guards during Labyrinth Runners. Yes, you could argue they are still illusion coven members but they look and act like Emperor's Coven members and even use that coven's equipment: The abomatons. Where are HIS illusionists?

Or, you know, the ones who make objects to sell and distribute to those not as high in the coven ranks? Those with little magic and need things like personal protection? Those like Alador. But... Darius appears to EXTREMELY disapprove of Alador's work. Sure, it may be personally motivated but when has that ever stopped a boss from doing a dick move? Let alone once Belos had a reason to get upset with them as well with the abomatons. That should have made there be a limited amount of abomatons because Blight Industries was potentially closed by order of the coven head. That or it could have been taken over by Darius so maybe they keep making abomatons but now Amity's is more connected to the covens than she was before because her family's business has more direct oversight. Now that her and Blight Industries are properly connected to the abomination coven.

Not that it shouldn't have been already. Again, you have the Main Nine, so big that the classes in Hexside bend around them and they have specialized uniforms for kids to show they're studying for a specific coven, even in other schools. Shouldn't that mean this is a real organization and so an entity as big as Blight Industries is made out to be should already have been brought under their wing? They're using literally the magic that the coven exists to... Well, technically for no reason but murder but the excuse should be that it helps push the magic further while also regulating it to make sure it doesn't break the law.

But do you know who shows up because of the abomatons? Hunter. And the Emperor's Coven. NOT the abomination coven.

This is kind of one of those big things that highlights how underdeveloped the worldbuilding of TOH is. Everyone has to be a part of a coven but we NEVER get an idea for what that even means beyond a tattoo that limits your magic. These covens are a part of the governing body but what do they DO? And you can't blame the shortening AT ALL for this because the show introduced the covens during literally the FIFTH episode. So we had an entire season where we could have had even one episode actually showcase a coven and what they're about, or even montage through a lot of them to show how the Isles worked... And we got literally zero. Instead, we got episodes like The First Day that make even the little we know about covens and wild witches seem inconsistent.

It's not even that this would be too boring. Luz gets excited for the Covention literally BECAUSE getting to showcase so much magic is a really cool idea. But even that episode makes it boring. We get like two covens getting to show off their stuff, and not really all that impressively, a description for a couple covens' types of magic, not what they do in the society, and that's... It. We don't even get the full nine despite them having decided to do a boring ass job fair for this. Instead, the covens themselves feel like a footnote in their own episode despite being the ONE kind of unique thing about TOH's world. Not really since it comes across as just schools of magic but it's SOMETHING beyond the most generic fantasy out there.

But it didn't care. The covens are just there for paradoxically heavy handed but also inconsistent messaging and theming. So we get coven heads because they're cool and they're able to be enemies... But no covens. Because actually showing those might have meant having to have a real world.

I’ve been thinking about this scene recently and the ever present question of “Who was the intended recipient of this pic?” and I think it may have been Darius (all this is me theorizing ofc)

First, in Labyrinth Runners, the Entrails did not give the vibe that they knew Hunter better than they did in Any Sport. 

It seems that Hunter did not chat that much if at all with the Emerald Entrails cause Gus still mistrusted him and Willow defended him only after he mentioned the breathing trick, even though the teachers were threatening Hunter. While Skara and Viney indeed helped him, they didn’t say anything after people in the room turned on him. Makes me think that after the initial communication at the end of the ep, it didn’t continue much further than that. Or it was basic and barebones, and made harder given that Hunter has troubles typing and those are people he just met. 

And in “For the Future”, even months later, Skara still mistakenly reffered to Hunter as the Golden Guard.

As for why it could be Darius? 

If it wasn’t the Entrails or Willow and Gus, then the only other person is Darius. He gave him the scroll and saw his pal, saying he won’t tell Belos about it so in his mind, Darius is a safe person to send this to. 

And if Darius was to tattle to Belos, at least by Hunter’s reasoning, he could have easily captured them both at the end of Any Sport and done the deed. He didn’t need to wait for Hunter to send him ‘evidence’. So to Hunter it is safe to exhange this pic as a dm after the fortunate end to their confrontation at the end of the episode.  Not to mention that judging by Darius’ extreme reaction in Hollow Mind, at the mention of Hunter being in danger and Hunter trusting Darius’ relatively easily after LR, those two must have bonded in some way after Any Sport. So why not in this way?

The following morning came and if you didn't know I'm not a morning person at all hearing the alarm clock go off I shut the damn alarm off and groan slightly as I get out of bed and stretched out my tired muscles to get ready for dynamite as I grabbed my clean clothes and went into the bathroom of my hotel room to hop into the shower and get started of my dreadful day

About half an hour later I put on my clean clothes and put on my signature hoodie which was black and put on my black shades on knowing I wasn't booked for tonight's show I was honestly meeting up with Anthony Bowens, Darius & Dante Martin, Action Andretti & Darby Allin for a quote on quote "special occasion"

Once I got to the arena I saw the guys outside and noticed that there's a female next to Darby Allin I questioned myself as to who the female was and why was she here with Darby Allin if this was a special occasion as I get out of the car to meet up with everyone

"well look who decided to show up" Andretti said as I growl lowly at him half of the time he angers me but I couldn't hurt Darius's protege knowing he's just a replacement for Dante as I turned to look at Darby with the female next to him

"Darby is this your girlfriend or something?" I asked as Darby chuckles slightly and looked at the female before looking back at me as he sighed deeply

"everyone this is Saige she's my sister" Darby began to say as the others waved hi and introduced themselves to her as I kept my close eye on her every movement

"it's nice to meet all of you" she began to say as I nod in reply mostly me meeting new people don't go together as I looked at her figure as I begin to sense her blood type yeah my powers are very valid one of them is sensing people's blood type as I sighed deeply and looked at her

"you're blood type A" I told her as she looked at me concerned as she felt a little shy

"yeah how did you know that?" She asked as Darby wide eyed me as I nodded slightly at him knowing not to tell her about us becoming demons nobody was allowed to know our secret

"I just know things like that" I told her as she nods in reply and looked at her brother Darby telling her she was going to go walk around the arena as I watch her leave I kept my close eye on her as I sighed deeply and hear Bowens chuckling lowly

"Tyler's already wanting to fuck Darby's sister" Bowens said as I growled lowly at him as Darby side eyed Bowens

"if he did end up fucking my sister I would've ripped his head off" Darby said as he looked at him and I sighed deeply again

"are you two done?" I asked feeling impatient as they both looked at me and Darby began to change the subject

"just letting you boys know right now, now that Andretti here is new to the demon world we're all going hunting tonight after dynamite" Darby said as I sighed deeply and looked at him not wanting to be in the hunting ceremony as I felt my eyes getting heavier

"I'm down for whatever but we'll all have to meet up here if this happens I'm gonna meet up with Orange Cassidy he needs me for his promo segment" I said as the boys nodded at me and I walked inside of the arena contemplating if I want to speak to Saige on my own or go about my day

Heyo! this was a good bit of questions and I was not feeling to type them all out so I did the more fun option and I've decided to read and answer them. This wouldn't be as clean as my usual audios but hope you enjoy! I loved answering all these but in the future tho, it'd probably be best to send asks with a handful of questions. How do you think Darius and Eberwolf met?

HELLO, HI, I LOVE THIS QUESTION (I also just remembered I have a wip of that I completely forgot about oops)

See, I find very sweet the possibility that they might have met when they were both children, even if that meant they drifted apart at some point and then reunited, but most of the time I headcanon that they met at the coven.

Despite Eberwolf becoming a Coven Head, I feel like they might have faced some prejudice because it doesn't seem like demons truly hold an equal position in society on the Boiling Isles, other than the bipedal demons, but that's still just one of three types of what seems to be an incredibly abundant race in the demon realm. Now, of course Eber has to be a bipedal demon, he can do magic and, well, he's bipedal, but he does look a lot more beastly than other bipedal demons, so I think there's a good possibility that he's part bipedal, part beast demon, which wouldn't give him a very good standing.

He's powerful, however, and bringing him in as a Coven Head is probably good for an image of "anyone can become a Coven Head" if Belos was going for the publicity angle, though mostly I imagine he must have cared about him being powerful since the Head Witches were the catalysts for the draining spell. We know how the rest of the Coven heads were though, and I don't think they particularly cared for being kind even to one of their peers.

So here's what I'm getting at: Because of all of that and the fact that Eberwolf doesn't speak the "common" language on the Isles, I think to a certain point no one was bothering with them too much, with a general attitude at the castle being like "ah, let someone else deal with that beast", more passive aggressive that straight up rude. Now, I doubt Darius was even interested on them at the beginning, too busy trying to figure out what had happened to his mentor, or being a little bit depressed, or both. He would have learned by this point that connections at the castle are a big no-no anyway.

But "he doesn't give me the time of day" is still better than "he sees me as lesser" so I like to think Eber latched onto that and kinda went "oh, it's too late, you're never getting rid of me now", and no matter how irritated Darius seemed to be, he was still irritated because of Eber's behavior, not because of his nature, so Eber was delighted 😭

I tend to think that there's scarce people who can truly understand Eberwolf, most of them getting by with written messages or rough signing, and Darius learned out of spite just so he could retort properly and then they kinda ended up being stuck together for missions because hey, why not send the one guy who can handle the Beastkeeping Head Witch? And Darius didn't even want to be friendly but now he's stuck with them and uh, oh, overtime he started getting fond of them. It was very much mutual, and once they found out they both had rebel tendencies? Oh, it was for life.

Nobody asked for this but take a fragment of the wip I mentioned at the beginning to see if I can somehow gather motivation from this to actually finish it:

“This is no beast,” He states through gritted teeth, even if the extremely pleased and sharp smile the small furry demon is sending in his direction makes him want to take back his assessment.   The scouts that are still there, watching the spectacle with what Darius guesses must be stunned expressions behind their masks. If they put as much effort on their jobs as they do on staring at him, they could have avoided this whole thing, but he’d rather extricate himself from this situation as swiftly as possible than waste his time by scolding them. “But Head Witch Eberwolf-” “-is right here," He cuts them off, watching with little amusement how they turn their heads so fast behind them that he's fairly sure at least one of them has some extra vertebrae on the neck to make for that ease of movement. "The demon you just pushed at me," He clarifies. The scouts stop moving so abruptly that Darius wonders if they were somehow petrified without him realizing. And with all their clothes staying intact instead of turning to stone alongside them. It’s impressive really, though not enough to lessen his irritation.

What is an unpopular ship that you like?

I mean is one of those "I ship it more for the potential and not because I want it to be canon" but U know I really like Riza X Kain SDFGHJ I just think it has a lot of untapped potential in the fandom space of Inflicting Characters With Things SDFGHJ

I mean, I do very strongly believe that Fuery has the most intense crush on Riza. In a way almost innocently because while he knows about Ishval, he didn't experienced it so that concept of Riza as a killer is very distant to him.

I think it can be sweet!! I like the way that Fuery is the only one that we know joined the military for not nationalistic/militaristic reasons. He just really wanted to work with radios and the army is the place with the most advanced radio technology, in a way he is the one that least expected having to see combat. I think Riza would find that... relatable? DFGHJ and like going "They both like dogs" is very basic but it gives them a point of bonding outside of anything army related, which is something I think she would appreciate...

It can also be very very angsty! Kain does look a bit like Roy if you like the whole "I am dating other people to forget you" type of deal. Also and more juicy, I do think that if there is a Team Mustang relationship that can really have some power imbalance drama is this one from the side of Riza being the one in power... In Royai is anything but a formality and maybe an excuse and most times it ends up a bit annoying LOL and with Havoc or anyone else I see it as less of a problem because idunno they don't really give me those vibes. But Fuery??? The youngest member who also idolizes his boss??????? The boss that has gone through everything and is talked about as the best sniper in the whole army while he is just a little guy into radios?????? NOW THERE I feel there are more solid character reasons for Riza to feel there is an abuse of power in place, SPECIALLY if she is in fact using him as a way to move on from Roy......... There is so much potential here oooouuughhh brain too full............ I just inflict them with things

Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

huuh good question because while I am very intense over Riza mischaracterization I feel like she is not more mischaracterized than say.... Izumi or Winry or Olivier or even Roy for that matter. People tend to get a lot of their first impressions of characters as their only vision of them lol

If I had to say one that really does annoy me though is... People not realizing the Chimeras as meant to be read as disabled in the same way Alphonse is lol. Specially the one's introduced during Briggs.

Alphonse connects with Jerso and Zampano over their shared experienced of being dehumanized by alchemy, where Alphonse tells them that they are still human despite of these changes, that no one can define them as anything else but themselves, and in the same way, how they relate to their condition. That's also why it bothers me so much, because the message about disabilities isn't complete without them, because while Jerso and Zampano find peace in their condition and still want to find a solution to live their lives how they want to, Darius and Heinkel are extremely happy with how they are right now! Is about body autonomy and deciding what is best for you by your own metrics. People ignoring them, including people with extremely good analysis over the disability representation over the rest of FMA makes me really sad lol

I think that Luz going "Eda" on Whispers would make a good justifaction why they would agree to go into luz's mind with Darius.

They know that Luz needs help as soon as possible and his gentle "schemes" that meant to help her open up backfired.

Also, a question: How does Luz mindscape actually looks like?

Because I imagine it looking like a palace's corridors mixed with bedrooms full of statues and reliefs(in place of paintings that were in Belos').

With inter!Luz switch between "empress, hunter, belos, and alone" modes (that look visibly diffrent with each looking more worrying than the last one)

these are really excellent raine thoughts, i think they've probably been worried about luz for a while prior to belos's death (if their concern for hunter in the canon is any indicator of, you know, How They Feel About Vulnerable Kids). i LOVE the idea of luz getting music lessons from them and raine being able to see her getting more anxious and upset in the year before belos's death, it's so good. because then i can see her kinda shutting down emotionally AFTER belos's death, and raine being like. okay. we have to know wtf happened.

i LOVE these mindscape thoughts. i'm honestly not a huge visual thinker, so it's hard for me to picture her mindscape exactly. but! i do have Storytelling Thoughts about it. an artist would be better at translating those into concrete visuals than me

so. i REALLY like the idea of her having a two-tiered mindscape in parallel to belos.

i think the upper layer would probably be a palace like you describe, and i LOVE the ideas of bedroom doors and statues leading to the memories there. the memories aren't lies or false like with belos's paintings, but i think she's storing all of her "empress" memories there. all the memories she has of playing politics and being domineering and acting the way belos wanted her to.

(horror concept that came to me as i typed this: this layer being where her memories of asking belos about grimwalkers and about making a grimwalker amity are stored.)

i think that would make a FASCINATING exploration for raine and darius (and eberwolf), like. they get inside before they've found the inner luz, and somehow everything in the mindscape is Exactly what darius expected to see. and he's acting irritable and smug about it but is still transparently uneasy. and raine, who knows luz better, is like .....no. this isn't right. something's wrong about these memories

then they find inner luz, who's exactly as fretful and traumatized and upset as raine expects her to be. and after eberwolf snuggles around her neck like a scarf and raine talks her down and darius stops being quite so intimidating, luz shows them the REST of the mindscape.

i think that part of her mindscape is outdoors and a lot more open (symbolizing her desire for freedom), has a mixture trees and foliage from the isles and earth (symbolizing both her home and her feelings of displacement), has quite a few thorny plants growing around and near her memories (symbolizing her self-protection).

that's where they'll find the memories of her killing belos. it's also where they'll find the memories of her and hunter using wild magic, studying forbidden subjects, etc. AND it's the only place in her mindscape that shows her real feelings about hunter - the clingy, neurotic, anxious snuggly bedsharing feelings - because luz keeps her mental image of hunter So Separate from the captain of her guard.

“We can’t wait to meet her.” Darius read from his phone, groaning as his brother cackled at his face. “Bro, I should have kept my mouth shut.”

“I told you so!” Dante said with a smile. “Why didn’t you?”

“Cause they would have set me up with that one girl that they always liked for me.”

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, Darius and Dante was excited to see their family and eat delicious food. But the one thing that Darius wasn’t particularly ready for was the conversations; especially about his love life. Including all-star questions such as: “Who’s the lucky girl?, Why are you still single?, If you want we can connect you with Alexis from across the street”…..that one bothered him the most. So, to avoid those questions, Darius decided to exaggerate the truth (lie) and tell his family, particularly his mother and aunts, that he has a girlfriend to avoid any and all questions.

However, they all want to meet her (hence the text from his mom).

But the thing is....he doesn’t actually have a girlfriend.

And now he is sitting in the car with his brother and their best friends: Tyler (Hook), Anthony, and Andretti (Did y’all know that Andretti’s first name is apparently Tyler too?), contemplating whether he should go to Thanksgiving dinner as a fraud and liar or skip town and avoid all phone calls.

“Are you talking about Alexis?” Dante asked as his brother nodded his head. “She’s nice and all, but definitely not your type. I honestly can’t even see you with her”

“So now you need to find someone to play the role of your girlfriend?” Anthony asked, briefly taking his eyes off the road. “How are you going to do that when Thanksgiving is this Thursday?”

“I didn’t know she would have to make an appearance. I thought they were gonna take my word for it.” Darius pouted. He should of thought about that before running his mouth. But then again, Darius was never a good liar; so the fact that he was able to convince his family that he has a significant other was shocking.

Andretti turned around to join the conversation. “Maybe you go on Tinder or Hinge and just tell women your situation. Someone would eventually help you, especially if you pay them.”

Tyler shook his head, “Nah, that’s too messy and chicks are crazy on there (no offense to y’all).”

“Besides I would need them to be ready by tomorrow. The fam likes for us to be early to do more activities which means going home on Tuesday and stay until Friday.” Darius said sighing, who needs a plan now. “Maybe I should just ask Alexis to pretend for me.”

“Not a good idea. Again, she’s not your type. You’ll regret it.” Dante said in a sing-song voice making Darius roll his eyes. There was nothing wrong with Alexis, she just didn’t mash well with Darius’ personality. However, their families believe that they would be perfect for each other, despite the awkward tension between the two.

“But do you know who is your type?” Andretti asked, making the entire car go silent. “Y/N Y/L/N.” Dante, Tyler, and Anthony made various sounds and statements in agreement as Andretti smirked.

Darius slightly blushed. “AEW’s makeup artist?”

“Yeah! She’s pretty, funny as hell, and you two get along great.”

Anthony chimed in, “She’s also very stylish so you don’t have worry about her outfits.”

“That’s all true but they barely talk, even though he makes lovey dovey eyes at her.” Tyler snickered, making Darius blush harder. “So if anything, it’ll be hard for him to ask her to do this favor.”

“I do not make those kind of eyes to her!” Darius defended himself. “I just admire her work and think she is a nice person.” He was telling the truth. You and Darius weren’t the closest of friends, if anything you two were acquaints who worked together. You were closer with Anthony and Hook than you were to him. But he really did think that you were a very beautiful and nice individual, and maybe he did develop “admiration” for you.

“Yeah right. Anyways, don’t you have her number?” Andretti asked motioning to Darius’ phone, who nodded back in response. “Then call and ask her. The worst she could say is no.”

As he was thinking, Darius’ best friends were encouraging him to pick up the phone. Anthony even pulled over so he could force Darius to tap on your contact, refusing to move. His palms started to sweat as his brother took the phone and put it on speaker. It rang three times before your voice came through. “Hello?”

“H-hey Y/N!” Darius stuttered making everyone in the car face palm, including himself.

You were hanging out with Skye Blue and Willow Nightingale as you brought your phone to your ear. “Hey Darius! What do I owe for this phone call?”

“Um, I have a big favor to ask and I don’t know who else to call.”

“Go ahead.”

“Well, first, do you have plans for Thanksgiving?”

"No…" You drifted off

Darius explained the situation to you at least twice; due to his flustered state and you not really comprehending why he would call you about it. Again, you two weren’t close, but you have to be crazy if you thought that Darius wasn’t handsome and sweet as hell. After a moment of silence, you asked, “What’s in it for me?”

“Free thanksgiving dinner, all expenses paid trip to Minnesota. And free alcohol.” He said, making you grow quiet again. “Did I mention that the alcohol was free?”

You giggled, “Yes, you did. But I want something else in addition.”

“Name it, I’ll do anything.”

“I want that customized Top Flight hoodie you had on last week.”

“The one with the bleached designed?” He asked as you confirmed it. “Yes, I’ll get you one! Just please help me!” He quickly said. You went back to being quiet before giving your answer.

After hanging up, you let go of a breath that you didn’t even that you were holding on to. You slid down your chair making Skye look at you. “What happened?”







“Apparently I have a boyfriend now.” You quietly said, making Willow and Skye spit out their drinks.

Most of the evening had passed in conversation delicate as spider webs and long stretches of silence. Leo buried in a book, Elliot writing in his journal, then playing some video game.

Even as they settle in for bed, things don't feel quite normal. No sarcastic remarks, no jabs, either verbal or physical. Quiet questions about the lights, the fan, this or that.

They say lukewarm goodnights and turn in to their parallel beds.

But it quickly becomes clear that neither one can sleep.

"and so the night dragged on, and every time he tossed, he wondered if the other turned," Leo quotes suddenly, breaking the long, long silence.

"...........Is that from The Fruit of Uncertainty?"

"of course "

"You hated it though." Leo can hear the frown in Elliot's voice.

"i didn't hate it. the writing was clumsy and cliche, but it was charming too. i can see why you like it, and--"

"You were digging on it all day!!" Elliot sits upright, an attempt to redirect his energy away from yelling.

"--that's not a dig. i. might have been a little mean. but you kept pushing me to pick a side between Ivel or Arrond without asking what i actually enjoyed."

Elliot settles back into bed, suddenly feeling self conscious. "Well. Okay. What did you like, then?"

"i wasn't just being contrarian when i said the police captain Darius was my favorite character. i usually like the 'straight man' type. i felt like he had a real personality, and i could understand his values and character even though his appearances were slim," as Leo explains, his voice stays even and quiet.

Elliot's expression softens as he listens, hidden by the dark. "...I see. Huh. I thought you were just being an asshole."

"not at all." Leo pauses for a second. "i'm. sorry. about tonight."

"...Me too. What--"

"it doesn't matter. i really don't know why i got so emotional." Leo pauses. Unseen in the dark and under covers, he hugs himself, nails digging through his own t-shirt. "thank you for pizza. and for buying that stupid novel."

Elliot smiles. In the dark, Leo can't see it. But he can hear it in his friend's voice when he says, "It was nothing. Let's just get some sleep. And you can tell me all your captain Darius deep dive theories in the morning. The rest doesn't matter. Goodnight, Leo."

The rest doesn't matter, Leo repeats to himself. "good night, Elliot."

And to inaugurate your inbox (whenever you feel up for it, no rush)... what is it about Laila and Serafina that makes them the perfect protagonists for each book, from your perspective?

This is actually an excellent question because the parallels between Laila and Serafina and the duality of their narratives is something I find more and more chewy and weighty the more I ruminate on them. And I definitely don't think the story would pan out the same if they were in each other's narratives. Their specific strengths and weaknesses would get them to play it in another manner entirely.

First of all, I'll start with why Laila is the ideal protagonist for WHEN THE STARS ALIGHT and beyond.

I consider her to be a great way to toy with and counter the ingenue trope. The thing about Laila is a lot of the narrative hinges on the fact that she is quite sheltered, naive and overall ""untainted"" by the ills of the world. She doesn't have the in-depth knowledge of misogyny and how it works to become wise to it. So it makes sense for her to be ignorant of it (or arrogant regarding it). If she isn't innocent and hopeful enough to fall for someone like Darius a lot of her tragedy would be averted but, simultaneously, she needs that ~guise of dainty goodness to lure out the softer aspects of her leading men and make them less likely to fathom harming her.

If I may veer into a bit of a dark subject matter for a second, I was watching an interview by a woman who was held in a hostage situation by violent men and was constantly in fear of being raped by them. She talked about how she would often counter this threat by purposefully endearing herself to these men, cooking them meals, cleaning up after them, empathising with them and listening to them talk about the ills in their marriage. She phrased it as making them see and value her presence as a woman. The entire thing was sickening and chilling to me but definitely revealed something in the nature of how women develop these soft power strategies to subtly manipulate men and diffuse the threat of their violence. For her it worked for as long as it needed to for her to eventually get away to safety but it wasn't due to any inherent feminine goodness she held, she was sharp, decisive and very precise with these gestures. She knew what she was doing.

Laila is very much the same in that regard. She has the tools at her disposal and she plays them well and it works for her when she needs it to, for the most part, but at the same time this doesn't make her impervious to harm. And it's that balancing act that makes her the most suited for this type of narrative of cat and mouse.

Serafina, in contrast, doesn't have Laila's ignorance because she was never afforded it. She is very much genre-savvy. She knows the narrative she's in and the role she is intended to play very well. And by the time we meet her she is angry, simmering with resentment and unable to sand off the jagged edges of her prickly exterior. Serafina isn't the type of woman who endears men to her and she knows it, but more appropriate would be to say she doesn't care about it. She doesn't want to play these silly little games with them. She wants to talk to them frankly, man to man, and lay the cards flat on the table.

A lot of her tragedy is that she never tries to be a radical from the start and never truly wanted to. She isn't under any delusions that Cassius will ever love her and she doesn't want his love, but she will demand his respect. She approaches marriage with a businesslike air and is determined to get the best deal for her. She wants to make the system work for her, ramming herself constantly as a square peg into a round hole to no avail. It's only when it becomes clearer and clearer that the world as it is was not meant for her and would sooner see her dead than accept her that she decides to divest herself from it.

It's really that sense of alienation that gets her towards that point in THE SANGUINE SORCERESS and I don't think Laila would get there and what's more I don't think Laila has the sort of steely resolve to make the same choices Serafina does. Not in a way that's natural (as in, without the influence of magic). She'd probably just shatter instead.

Part 4 - Foolish Thoughts

It was sunday. You're finally taking a break. You love the feeling of sunday morning. Fresh air, Coffee in the morning, you can be as sluggish as you please. It was 9:00 AM and you're watching TV, till your phone sends you a notification. You hoped it wasn't from Vanessa interupting your lovely Sunday morning by telling you that something bad happened in the Pizzaplex and that you have to check on it. But no, it was from your best friend, Darius.

He has been your friend since 2nd grade, it was your only friend at that time. Darius is a tall guy with a fluffy hairstyle and round thin glasses. He was pretty for a boy, you even had a crush on him once until you found out that he likes someone else. But that was all in the past and you've moved on.

Darius sent a text message saying that he wanted to meet you and eat in Pizzaplex.

"Really? Pizzaplex? dude let me have my break from that place." You thought.

But since you're and employee there and can eat there for free, then why not? Free good quality food. You texted back saying that you'll come and showered. He asked you to meet in around 12 PM. Later, it was 12 PM, and you dressed in your finest for him. You texted him that you're on the way and he responded with a thumbs up emoji. You've arrived and you saw Darius in front of the entrance.

"Yoo! Y/N!" Darius shouted.

"Hey, Darius! what's good my man?" You asked.

"Nothin' much, what about you?" He asked.

"Eh, got a new job. In here actually." You responded.

"Yoo! you got a job in Pizzaplex? That's so sick! does that mean you get free pizza?" He said.

"Hell yeah i do! i don't needa pay nothin'." You answered.

"Sweet! let's go inside." He said.

"Aight." You responded.

You and Darius came inside the Pizzaplex and got to El Chip's. You sat down inside on an empty spot and ordered. You ordered cheese pizza for both you and Darius. Darius ordered Lemon Tea, and you chose Vanilla Milkshake for the beverages. It was sunday so the Pizzaplex is really crowded, You can actually see Monty and the others performing on the stage from the restaurant. You leaned on your hand and grinned, thinking of how cute that gator is. Till Darius started talking, snapping you out of thay thought.

Unlike Vanessa, he isn't the Talkative type of guy. Thus, the main challenge is coming up with conversational themes for you and Darius. You both mostly talked about your life and how everything is doing. Little did Y/N know, Monty was watching the both of you this whole time. He saw you with Darius making him a but uneasy.

"Who the hell is that? What is this feeling?" Monty thought while performing his bass.

Monty doesn't realize that he's feeling a bit jealous. But why is that? I mean, obviously Monty isn't the only guy you know, but somehow Monty doesn't like it when you're with him, especially when you're seated in front of him as though you're on a date or something.

"Is that her boyfriend? she never told me that she had a boyfriend." Monty thought.

Monty's head is filled with unanswered questions. Questions, that's making him envious. However, he continues to maintain a wide smile to avoid unwanted attention of the audience. After you're finished with Darius you went to see Monty for one last time before you head to your apartment. it was still 4 PM so you still had a lot of time to slack off, enjoying your sunday. You played some games for the rest of the day until 9 PM. You took a quick shower, wore your pajamas, and head off to bed.

While you're sleeping, Monty was venting to Freddy about what happened earlier. Freddy was his most trusted friend. He's very trustworthy and whenever Monty feels down, he always comforts him.

"Freddy, i saw Y/N with another guy. I don't know if it's her Boyfriend or just her normal friend but i certainly don't like it. I want her to stay away from him." Monty said.

"Oh Monty, you can't just control people like that. You can't make them do whatever you want, and i'm sure that's not her boyfriend. If it was then she'd tell you about it." Freddy responded.

"I know i can't control people and make them do whatever i want, but this feelings is just...i don't even know how to describe it! it's like i want him dead! i don't like him being close to Y/N. I don't care if it's her friend, i want him to stop talking to her!" Monty yelled.

"Monty, are you sure you're not in love with Y/N? It seems like you're jealous." Freddy said.

"What! No! I don't like her that way! S-she's just my friend, Freddy. I promise!" Monty answered.

"Or maybe you don't know it yet. Maybe you're denying that you like Y/N. I mean i saw you with Y/N once and you acted completely different with her than you're with others. You're more soft and you seemed like you're happier with her." Freddy said.

"Uhm..Oh Freddy. I think...i think i really am in love with her. I can't stop thinking about her, i'm scared that she likes him better than me! What if she left me for him?" Monty said.

"Monty don't say that! you're overthinking! and that's not good, Monty." Freddy said while putting a hand on Monty's shoulder.

"Am i Freddy?" Monty said with a frown.

"Yes! She won't leave you, i know she'll never do that. Everytime she's with you, she has never looked happier. She enjoys being with you Monty." Freddy said.

"But what if she don't like me back?" Monty asked.

"Well, you never know. You never know what's someone's thinking. It's possible for her to like you back. Maybe this is a chance to make her like you." Freddy responded.

"Hmm..yeah! maybe i can make her like me." Monty's eyes lit up

"Yeah! definitely." Freddy said with a big smile.

"Man, thanks Fred. You always have my back when i need it." Monty said.

"Of course!" Freddy said.

And with that Monty left Freddy's room and head to his room.

What are your thoughts on Odalia and Alador? I was very disappointed by them.

When i first saw them, i thought they would be a fun villain couple who loved eachother and that they would represent the different types of parental abuse. Odalia being the more controlling, active abuser, and Alador being the more passive abuser.

When Reaching out came out, i was excited, because i thought it would be about Amity seeking approval from Alador because 'well he isnt as bad, so maybe i can gain his approval!' but then the message would be 'no, passive abuse is just as harmful and should not be glossed over and minimised.'

instead it turned Alador into a 'distant but caring dad', and then later, it emphasised this by making Odalia this insane idiot who didnt care about the genocide, stupidly thinking she would be exempt.

I agree! Just in general I agree! I'll first talk about Alador because honestly what was done with him was... Boring and pointless? At best, it's to give Amity resolution on at least one of her parents (which is questionable because I'd argue Reaching Out makes her goal... Murky. I don't know what she wants from her father honestly because her coven beliefs and her little speech at the end make it clear she doesn't give a single shit about his opinion or Odalia's so... *shrug* ) and maybe to give an answer against the Abomatons but neither of those ever paid off. At all. Ever. So instead you have someone who is just an extremely inconsistent character because it feels like the first three times we see him are three different versions of him and that is including Understanding Willow where he didn't give the impression to be a space cadet or not on board with what Odalia pushed. The fact that he's pushed to be incompetent also makes his writing like a lot of the guys in the show because he's hard to take seriously, Edric is similar, and he's just... there. Oh, I guess there's also the fact that he's clearly making robots instead of just golems, even to the point of mech suits, and I hate that because what the fuck is TOH's technology level? But also who cares when the writers clearly didn't? Speaking of: Odalia. Odalia is actually the worse of the two despite getting less screen time and I don't just mean because she's a worse person. Don't get me wrong: She is. She feels like some bad, animated 90s movie villain where money and personal gain is how they'll justify doing literally ANYTHING. But also Odalia is still bad at it since she thinks executing a child is a great way to sell HOME DEFENSE PRODUCTS. Because the death of their kids is definitely what you want on your customer's minds! Before I get into her real problem though: I also hate that she knows Belos' whole plan. Hunter doesn't know it. Darius, Eberwolf and Raine, all coven heads, had to sneak and steal the plans to get the information. Why the fuck, besides making her somehow even MORE evil, did Belos ever tell this bitch who probably never even asked what he was doing with the abomatons? Just... It's bad and dumb writing. But kind of like all of Odalia's writing: It still matters. Odalia is written like a one off villain while being AMITY BLIGHT'S MOM. And that is her real problem: How evil she is throws all of her children into question. The twins seem worried about their mom's retribution so why do they skip class? Why do they invite trouble that Amity, at the peak of her being busy with school, was able to notice? How do they get away with it? I made interesting and fun answers to that while the show doesn't even care about the question. And Amity is even worse. Her arc is thrown into question. How was she able to befriend Luz so easily when we know Odalia wouldn't approve of her? How was she able to throw away her old social group? How could she have been confident enough to bring Willow back as a friend? Why wasn't there ANY more worry about her mom when she knows her mom. She probably could have guessed her mom would try to kill Luz, or even Willow, if they became her friends and probably should have gotten livid at her abandoning her 'better' friends. Back when it was just Understanding Willow, one could make a case that maybe Odalia eased up on it since then. That's what I did in my story, The Power of Love. That the pressure Amity felt was at least as much in her own head as it was externally pushed on her. Things that would have been WAY more interesting than what we got. Because what we got with the Blight family as a whole is a bunch of characters who don't make sense, flip their characters on a dime and are just trash as a whole unit. And that's from the family that was BURSTING with potential at the end of S1. "hah?" not flirting? that was a blatant lie in his eyes. darius was barely looking at lance at this point, staring at the person causing his ire walking away, somewhat unsettled. "what do you mean... wasn't flirting? why were they so close then? why were they smiling like that?" darius questions, voice strained, really trying to not snap. he wouldn't. maybe, if all went well.

darius looks at lance, eyes wide, a forced smile curving his lips up, with a hint of teeth showing from behind them. "did you want it? were they nice? were they your type?" he sure hoped not. he didn't mean to sound so paranoid, so jealous?

fear was squeezing his lungs, making it hard to breathe. "are--- are you okay?" the last question is loaded. anxiety coiling cold in his stomach, hands numb and shaking, as flashes from their past crosses his mind, making him feel nauseous.
