Autumn's Scent

"Smells like fall." Dan was the first to comment.

They'd left the ruins of Crago only a handful of moments ago, and yet everything had completely changed around them; the scenery, the air, the lack of hostiles - both the dead and the living kind. At first Farrah had mistaken it for the smell of freedom, one that comes moments after imminent danger passes. But Dan was right, the overgrown fields, and stray trees lining the road they were walking down did smell like autumn.

Farrah put the cigarette she was about to light back into its tin. There was something extremely nostalgic about this smell that she wanted to enjoy.

"It does," She finally agreed with Dan. "Really goes to show that the world didn't change as much as you'd think it would."

At that Dan scoffed and gave the cracked concrete a dirty look.

"I'm not sure a season can have a smell." Vega spoke.

She'd been trying sniff the air for the past few minutes. Her enhanced abilities were clearly doing nothing to pick up on the mixture of wet leaves slowly decaying on concrete, or the freshness of the gentle breeze that wandered through the orange branches.

Dan glanced at her with suspicion. He hadn't been buying her concussion story before, and he was believing in it less and less with every passing day.

"It smells like the past," Farrah tried to explain, "Like when I was a little girl, 5 or so, i think, and I'd play on the slides, but the playground was shit, so there'd always be leaves in them. It was one of those long closed slides, you know? The leaves would get in from the top." She explained. "And Amy and I would always dare each other to do down the slide first," Farrah continued, a smile crawling over her lips at the mention of her best friend. "That slide smelled like wet plastic, but the second we'd be out, it's like now, the autumn smell would hit us."

"For me it's the college days, when I moved to Candwell, and would run in between lectures through the fields we had."

"I'm sorry Candwell?" Farrah interrupted, failing to contain ger genuine surprise. "I never took you for the literary and arts type."

"You've known me for two weeks." Dan dryly cut her off. "It's a historic campus, preserved and maintained since 1820. No walking on grass, no swimming in the canals, no loitering by the library,"

"Because they have no benches, but about three dozen too many steps by the library," Farah clarified for Vega.

"You've been?" Dan asked, slightly surprised. Farrah hadn't stroked him as the university type. Not the type to travel three hours into the countryside to visit a random campus.

"After the, umm," She gestured around.

That raised more questions than it answered, but Dan continued, as his story had a point:

"Yeah, it was an interesting experience. But in fall, I'd have to walk a good ten, fifteen, minutes through one of those grass parcs. Sometimes I'd stop, and take it all in. The smell of grass and falling leaves, warm coffee and sweetcorn being sold at the edge of the park. Dogs running around, even though they should be on leashes. Children throwing leaves at each other, and play fighting with stick swords..." He pressed his lips into a sad smile, and shook his head. Those were memories of an era bygone. "What about you, Vega Tesla?"

Farrah chucked at the mention of the name. She still wasn't fully over how that'd been the made up name Vega had decided to go with. Although, at the back of her mind, she still partially hoped that they'd stumble upon Vega's real identity somehow, and that those nine letters would be indeed written on her passport.

"Huh?"

"Your happiest, or at least notable memory relating to fall."

Farrah was about to tell him to drop it. Unlike her, he'd been more skeptical of Vega's situation. Well, Farrah was skeptical too, in a way, but she liked Vega enough to let it all slide. Afterall, she never shared much of her past either.

"Well," Vega began. "Did you see that - up in that tree?" She suddenly exclaimed.

yess can confirm!! phil’s not usually as expressive in pictures as dan, so maybe it’s that, but yeah he’s incredibly lovely and those eyes omg!!! they really are like a beautiful, calming ocean :’) and the fact that he’s just such a sweetheart and has a very comforting presence makes him even more angelic in person <333

But anyway, yesterday I saw that I've been watching them for 11 YEARS. THAT'S CRAZY.

I like to imagine that secretly Herbert West has a fondness for sweets, but nobody knows that because they don't bother to ask.

Dan would presume that West would eat little to nothing for breakfast based just on appearance and behavior alone. One dull bagel and one cup of pure black coffee, in his opinion, would make up the average Herbert West breakfast.

Meanwhile, West's down in his lab taking notes as he's working away on a sprinkle donut from the box of donuts Danny brought. Meanwhile his mug of coffee is purely more sugar and creamer than anything else.
