Mind if I ask if there was anything that led you to cast the characters as the specific animals you did for the Saw zodiac piece?? Like I KNOW you had to work with the animals within the Chinese zodiac, but...why the goat for Kramer, the monkey for Amanda, and so forth??? Was it based on birthdays or character traits, or something like that??

I really like that piece and I want to give u a platform to talk about it more lmao

Like you said, my choices were limited to the animals within the zodiac. It was a fun little challenge mixing and matching each animal to a character that I felt suited them (personality-wise in some cases, appearance-wise in others.) More under the cut, for those interested.

Amanda (Monkey) - Jumps between mischievously playful and sadistically cruel. In possession of ten clever little fingers, perfect for rigging traps…

John (Goat) - Stubborn + stoutly adheres to his beliefs. Sporting a pair of curving horns that play into the spiral motif very nicely. Enjoys playing God and doling out punishment, much like a certain other horn-ed fellow who spends his days disciplining ‘sinners’. 

Jill (Sow) - Seemed like an easy choice considering the Tuck family’s pig farm. I also wanted to call back to Gideon and what could have been.

Hoffman (Tiger) - Large, imposing and solitary. (Almost) always one step ahead. Tigers having illusory eyes on the backs of their ears to throw off stalking predators feels extremely Hoffman to me. Getting the jump on him is nearly impossible. Nearly. 

Strahm (Dog) - Not just any dog, a GSD. Sharp as a whip, wary as a watchman. Commonly used by law enforcement. Loyal to those he considers friends, aloof and standoffish to just about everybody else...

Cecilia (Dragon) - Much like a dragon, Cecilia would be right at home curled atop a mountain of treasure. Even what she promises / advertises seems mythical - the kind of miracle that only exists within a fantasy...

Logan (Ox) - ‘It’s cause you’re always in that damn BARN.’ A farm animal through and through. He's John’s heir apparent, a faint outline of him, complete with a similarly horned silhouette.

Lawrence (Rabbit) - Larry was one of the ‘lucky’ ones, and what's more lucky than a rabbit's foot? ( Do you think he carries his severed foot around on his keys in this AU ? )

Adam (Rat) - I mean…

Schenk (Snake) - People will probably assume that I picked a snake because he’s ‘deceitful’ (I actually think his rage was justified. ACAB.) but I actually just wanted to incorporate spirals onto him in an organic way. Snakes, with their intricate scale patterns, allowed me to do just that.

Who’s left? Zep Hindle screams 'chicken' to me and Lynn has beautiful flowing hair that lends itself perfectly to a horsey.

*Imran and Maira groaning* *bar chatter and friendly conversation*

THIAGO: Alright, fill me in—on a scale from ‘mild inconvenience’ to ‘angry mobs with pitchforks,’ how serious is this meeting supposed to be?

FIONA: It’s a town meeting, not a revolution. Keep your hair on; The Bachelor will still be on when you get home.

THIAGO: I do not watch--

WILLOW: (unconvinced) Kim looks pretty ruffled. She’s over there at the bar and she looks like she’s got a whole hive of bees in her pants. Reckon this’ll be a ‘nod along and move on’ meeting or a ‘full-blown debate’ kind of night?

WILLOW: (grinning) Five quid says a barstool gets thrown at someone tonight.

THIAGO: Oh, you’re on.

FIONA: That is if Sara--

MAYOR CHOPRA: (clearing her throat) Excuse me everyone! *The room starts to quiet*

MAYOR CHOPRA: I appreciate all of you for coming out tonight to a meeting regarding our beloved Henford. Our grocers and markets have always been a crucial part of our economy, and we need to make sure that it remains fair and stable.

MAYOR CHOPRA: That is why I am proposing a new small vendor permit fee and certain updated regulations for sellers in the town.

*The crowd is silent for a moment, stunned.*

*immediately angry chatter erupts from the townsfolk*

CECILIA KANG: There’s nothing small about a fee when we’re barely getting by!

*other members of the town just stare, quietly*

THOMAS WATSON: (angrily) You can’t slap fees on people selling honey and crops from their own land!

MAYOR CHOPRA: I understand the sudden change may be confusing and a little upsetting, but I don’t want--

KIM GOLDBLOOM: (speaking over the crowd) You always act like everything is a conspiracy, Cecilia.

KIM GOLDBLOOM: Let’s be honest—the market’s turning into a free-for-all. People are setting up wherever they please, taking up more space than they should, and don’t even get me started on the undercutting... I’ve been running my grocery stall for years, following the rules, paying my dues. But then you’ve got folks selling produce on the side for dirt cheap, no rules, no accountability. How is that fair to those of us who make a living from this?

WILLOW: (under her breath) Fair? (more loudly) You think charging people just to sell what they grow is fair? Some of these people aren’t running businesses, Kim. They’re just sharing what they have with the community!

KIM GOLDBLOOM: Sharing is one thing, undercutting is another. Maybe you don’t see it, Willow, but people like me—who rely on this market to survive—can’t afford to have half the town treating it like a hobby fair.

SARA SCOTT: Hold on, let’s not turn this into a personal thing. Mayor, what exactly are we talking about here? What kind of fees? What kind of rules?

MAYOR CHOPRA: Nothing drastic. A small permit fee, scaled based on how often someone sells. Casual vendors would pay a little more, while established sellers—like Ms. Goldbloom here— would pay less. We also want clearer guidelines on stall placements, crowd flow, and product safety. It’s about maintaining order, not driving anyone out.

WILLOW: (calling out) And who decides what’s ‘too big’ or ‘too often’? What if a single mum just needs to sell a few baskets of fruit here and there to make ends meet? You’re telling me she has to pay just for that?

KIM: I get it, Willow, I do. But people have to follow some rules, or we’re going to end up with a mess on our hands. It’s already heading that way...

MAYOR CHOPRA: The goal is not to push anyone out, Ms. Everwood. But markets don’t run on goodwill alone. If we want to keep it thriving, we need structure.

DEREK MCMILLAN: Doesn’t sound so bad. Keeps things from getting overcrowded...

IAN MCMILLAN: (snoring softly)

MAYOR CHOPRA: I will outline the proposed fees and criteria in the coming days. We’ll hold a formal town meeting next week. I encourage everyone to come and speak their minds!

MAYOR CHOPRA: I want this to work for everyone—but I also want a sustainable future for our market.

WILLOW: (fuming silently)

THIAGO: Would it be a bad time to cash in on that five quid?

WILLOW: (grumbling) Just give me five minutes and it’ll be me cashing in.

FIONA: Willow, no.

Hey, a while ago you stated you were unsure of why Insider didn't bust into the chapel in Hortus D and it seemed like it was because he doesn't stick his neck out for people.

He absolutely does not stick his neck out for people, but that is actually not the reason why here. It's stated that once communion (or I guess the ritual as a whole) starts, no Sankta would interrupt it. When Insider gets there, he says "he's too late". It's probably a Commandment on the same scale as "not shooting another Sankta" or "not shooting six bullets".

For context, this communion is based on the Catholic Mass, and once the Mass gets to a certain point, it Must be Finished (if the priest were to die partway through, the first obligation of the people would be to find a new priest, not get medical help).

Additionally, I think that since anyone can participate in this communion and the fact that any race can be part Sankta (see Cecilia) (even Sarkaz) means that, eventually, The Law would like to include all people in its Paradise.

In fact, I suspect this is what happened with the First King of Sarkaz, what with Amiya's own empathy and such.

Weirdly enough, this ties to the attitudes of the Sankta contrasting with Executor. The Sankta in some ways see themselves as better due to having the Law, empathy, etc. Executor does not see this. The Law is, and that implies nothing else, not race, anything. If what I said is true, then this would be the reason he was chosen to be a Saint.

Anon this is lovely and concise, I appreciate the insight, but I think you got the wrong guy because I never stated that, nor have I posted about Insider in any capacity except that he looks like the guy from Mob Psycho 100.

If I may, what's your opinion on Hank from Earth-41001/X-Men: The End and GeNext: United?

So, I had to brush up on my X-Men history for this one, because Chris Claremont's post-2000 work often tends to slip my mind, especially his The End series, which has as many insane and weird choices as it does good ones.

The man really did lose a step after he got taken off the books in the 90s, and while I think that he's written some good stuff after that (his 2000s Excalibur runs are honestly better than I remembered them being), there's a reason he doesn't get asked back to do much more than the occasional story here and there, like the recent Uncanny #700 feature on Mystique, Nightcrawler, Destiny and Rogue.

Compare and contrast that to Louise Simonson, who got asked back to do a whole Jean Grey mini-series during Fall of X, and it's pretty clear that he's just not considered frontline talent anymore.

That being said, I think this Hank, and Claremont's work on GeNext, definitely skews more towards the good side of the scale.

This version of Hank is, of course, best known for his relationship with Cecilia Reyes, which, in this universe, blossomed into a fully fledged marriage with multiple kids - and that's a good choice, honestly! Of all his romantic partners, Cecilia has always struck me as the most level headed, the most stable, and the most likely to want to settle down, which Hank has, on some level, always wanted to do, and has perhaps the best ability to out of a lot of the X-Men.

Despite his physical mutation seeming like the biggest obstacle to him living a normal life, Hank's work with the Avengers and Defenders has resulted in a massive boost to his popularity in-universe, he's equivalent to a real life celebrity, and it's made it easy for him to settle down and stop doing superhero work if he so chooses.

It doesn't hurt that his public persona, of a well spoken, charming, and funny blue little guy, is an effective one, and one that's easy for him to maintain because, well, it's pretty damn close to what he's actually like.

But, back to The End and GeNext. It's a clear sequel to X-Treme X-Men in a lot of ways, something Claremont establishes pretty clearly by bringing up Hank's trauma regarding the death of Psylocke in Valencia, which I appreciate, because I feel like it really gives a lot of important emotional context to Hank's state of mind in New X-Men, and it weighs heavily on him. I don't think Hank is a person who takes death easily, and Claremont gets that.

I also have to include this, because it is hilarious.

I also really appreciate this moment, because . . . yeah, Hank is the guy you want to leave behind, because Hank is a fundamentally nurturing, bridge-building, educational force. There was a period of time, from roughly 2001-2005, where the X-Men became a lot more like the school focused book that people always kind of think of it as, where hundreds of mutants were running through the halls and the X-Men were teachers.

And, to be frank, a lot of those X-Men didn't really feel fit to be teachers? A lot of them have very good practical experience to teach certain applied subjects, but Hank, Emma, and a few select others have always felt like the most suited to actual higher education for the students, which is why Hank's recurring role in New X-Men vol. 2/Academy X always felt like such a natural fit.

Like, this man was born to be the cool teacher.

And born to be a dad, too.

I'll be real, I'm not . . . 100% on the clothing? I'm not an expert, but I don't know that a WASP man, even if he's blue, should be wearing this kind of clothing, even if he does rock it. Someone who's more of an expert on American cultures and African clothing would need to weigh in here, but it's not a choice I personally would have made? It feels a little bit 'older hippie accidentally strays onto the landmine that is cultural appreciation because he has a non-white girlfriend.' But, then again, this series was written in 2006, and Claremont is an older generation writer, so I can't judge it too harshly.

So, now we move on to GeNext, which, as the first issue states, deals with the premise that the X-Men's ages progressed in real time, rather than being stuck in the sliding timescale, which means that Hank is nearing 50. I've long since headcanoned that his healing factor, even if it isn't up to Wolverine or Sabretooth's levels, means that he should be just as agile and spry age 50 as if he were 20, and this series generally tends to hold to that?

I do appreciate that this series leverages the differences in Hank and Cecilia's outlook on the X-Men. Hank's always bought into Xavier's dream, always regarded the work the X-Men do as necessary, and while Cecilia holds to that, she reflects another aspect of Hank's take, which is that it's a worthy job, sure, but not everyone with an X-gene is suited to be an X-Man, and it's a worthwhile thing to consider.

Sometimes, people just want enough training that they can control their powers, and then they just want to bounce, and that's an outlook that should be respected, even if it doesn't always pan out.

This is a particularly interesting development, given where Scott would fall on the axis of letting kids be kids, versus making kids into X-Men, later on in the 616 continuity.

But it makes sense. In this universe, the Decimation never happened, and the arc of these two characters changed as a result - hell, Hank never turned feline, either, which I always regarded as a massive learning process and maturation for him, a furthering of his arc in New Defenders where he was learning what it meant to be a responsible adult.

It feels, in this universe at least, like he never quite lost the devil-may-care spirit that feline Hank's brushes with mortality beat into him. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe that's a bad thing, but it's hard not to see his point - if good kids have the power to effect change, then they're going to do it, with or without your say so. Denying that fact only leads to a New Mutants/Magneto situation, where they kind of end up resenting you for holding them back, even if your intentions are only to keep them safe.

His tune does change a little bit in United, though it's a very different situation here - rather than pushing the boundaries as an Xavier sanctioned X-team, seemingly with some training wheels on, as Hank seemed to be suggesting, here, Cooper is hinting at a more formal, more high stakes, more original flavour X-Men solution, which. Hank has thoughts about. Though, it wouldn't be Hank if he weren't capable of holding two contradictory viewpoints at the exact same time about the exact same thing.

It does always make me laugh when people say that Hank always turns evil in alternate futures. What about this one? He's like the coolest old guy ever. He's solid. He's reliable. He's flexible. He's understanding. There's not a goddamn evil bone in his body. He counts just as much as Dark Beast does, is all I'm saying . . .

Soft. Sweet. Gentle. This is Hank McCoy at his purest.

Hank McCoy. Everyone's friend.

That being said, I'm a sucker for moments like these.

Oh, shit, yeah, Hank IS strong enough to bench press ten tons, and he IS a raging beast with uncanny speed, reflexes, and brutality. Maybe fucking with him and removing the thing that tempers and controls and keeps him reasonable - his soul - isn't a good idea??? Oops.

There's not a ton more left to comment on, Hank is very much a supporting character in United, but it does remind me of something that I've always felt in my heart of hearts - that even though Chris Claremont didn't get to write Beast very much, he had a very strong appreciation for the character, and enjoyed writing him when he had a chance.

There's an alternate universe out there where Hank stayed with the X-Men rather than joining the Avengers and Defenders, and though I don't think I'd want to live in that universe - I enjoy New Defenders entirely too much to give it up for anything - I definitely think it'd make for an interesting What If, where Hank's present for much more of Claremont's defining 16 year run on the X-Men. I definitely think he would have done him justice.

Scale of 1-10: how annoying am I to write daycare an email asking them to be sure to be 100% consistent in how they spell my daughters name AND nickname.

It seems like they FINALLY got the spelling right for Cecilia but I keep seeing variations of Cece (Ceci, Ceci, CC) and it’s bugging me because I feel at this point, she needs to know how to spell her name or nickname and she needs consistency. Especially if she goes to kindergarten next year and decides she still wants to be called Cece (I hope she does not lol I refuse to call her it lol).

I’m just… tired of constantly having to correct people. It’s not a hard name!!!

Seven WIP Sentences

Tagged by @the-font-bandit who knows full well I don't have a fanfic WIP on the go atm after turning in Feather and Scale yesterday 😂

So, here's a chunk of my other WIP:

Up here, the air was… fragrant. Smokes Day recognised - that could be bought at the corner store or round the back of it - but also headier scents closer to joss sticks or really expensive candles. The tapestried rugs underfoot deadened the noise of her heels, and she could neither see nor hear Cecilia. She could hear voices further away from the hubbub of the party, beyond a dimmed corridor of mostly closed doors. That distinctive tone which was a touch hushed to make out detail, but too insistent, urgent to ignore. The sound of secrets. Day crept closer, although she knew she had every right to be on that floor, could pass off any accidental interruption as a wine-abetted mistake, and rested back beside a large vase of dried ornamental grasses once the words became clear.

Day (Zillenial who fucks as therapy, in a maxi dress and too-tall heels) "sneaking" is best imagined as Kronk carrying Kuzco, with her own theme music, imo.

Managed 1 of my 5 planned days working on this last week, so any better than that this week is a win.

Question about the little side throuple thing Caj has with St Cecilia and Charles. Is Nita ok with it? Does Caj have feelings for the other two? Is it only an au or is it canon? That's more than one question sorry but I'm wondering! Are they all polyam?

You're going to have to ask @gointothevvater, author of that fic, a lot of those questions, OP. :)

But I've said it before in different places so I'll go on Tumblr-record now -- Caj and Nita are, even after marriage, quite polyam. In fact, they're probably more sexually adventurous *after* marriage, if that's possible. They enjoy sharing each other so long as their partner doesn't have any objections.

As for the "amory" part of polyamory, Cajita do love some of their partners. On an individual basis: I think there's still an innocence to Nita where she loves a lot of people easily, and she's quick to say so. I think she might have those feelings on a sliding scale of "love ya" to "in love like crazy." It's the range of love -- it's wide open. :D And taking her life experiences into consideration, I think Caj is someone who doesn't fall in love easily, but is capable of loving a select few people, quite deeply. And, naturally, in terms of character growth, she now recognizes how important it is to express that love, if it's there.

I cannot wait to show you what I have planned for my girls' relationship in the third Dethkomic. There will be lots of things I have been looking forward to putting the spotlight on, in terms of the Nita/Caj marriage (and not all of it sunshine and rainbows) but it should definitely solidify how they manage the other people in their respective and cumulative love lives.

do they have any shared interests/hobbies? do they ever do these hobbies together?

mariah x davrin: as we know, davrin has his wood carving hobby. which mariah loves btw, she loves to watch and always hypes up everything he makes. but mariah is more of a "what even IS a hobby?" type of person. does researching and making poisons for a contract count? honestly i think it does eventually bc post-game she and davrin continue their little adventures and she channels her skills into monster hunting with him, which becomes their shared interest!

riona x leliana: god. riona loves leliana's stories and songs. riona has a strong interest in history and preserving that information, but she's not the best storyteller. leliana being able to share stories riona tells her is a bit of a shared hobby i'd say. they also have a shared interest in nugs! riona likes blacksmithing; making her own weapons. which leliana isn't super into, but finds it fascinating to watch riona do so!

cecilia x viktor: researching/tinkering/inventing of course... albeit in a less formal way for cece. she's not quite as ambitious with it on as grand a scale like viktor is. i love the idea that they can work on their separate projects in the same room though. comfortability in silence and all that.

it had been a couple of decades since last they had run into one another, by now, the monotony of meeting new people paled in comparison to someone xiao knew but was always changing : someone who both stayed the same and dared to learn more. the curiosity of this world had not been lost on albedo in the same way xiao had become disenchanted ( part of them was envious, part of them was enthralled. ) albedo had been in the middle of explaining the complex symbiosis between two different sets of plants, the both of them scaling the sides of the tall mountains this side of jueyun karst. the rock here was unstable, even for the sturdiest of climbers. walking behind the alchemist xiao kept eyes on the curly wisps of his ashen ponytail before gilded eyes would fall to his boots, hand darting out for a slim waist just as the side of the perilous path gave way. xiao looked over albedo's shoulder in order to make sure the path was stable, lose rubble falling away, before becoming aware of how close they held him to their own lithe form. chest to chest, just more than a hairsbreadth between their faces. bright eyes widened, the adeptus stepping back as if having been burned, rose floretting over cheekbones as they looked away, flustered. " my apologies ... " they mumbled, unbefitting of a proud adeptus, now unable to shake the scent of parchment and cecilia flower. // @ninesense

ㅤㅤㅤ𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐞   𝐡𝐢𝐬   𝐞𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬   -   𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐝𝐨   𝐢𝐬   not   so   adept   at   opening   up   with   others   -   far   more   reserved   and   reticent   than   he'd   care   to   admit.   indeed,   the   homunculus   remained   distant   from   the   citizens   of   his   homeland   for   the   most   part   -   a   polite   and   graceful   shell   of   calm   platitudes   and   easy   leadership.   it   was   not   the   same   with   xiao   though.   perhaps   it   was   simply   because   their   friendship   had   been   so   long   lasting,   the   conqueror   of   demons   taking   the   alchemist's   strangeness   in   stride   and   albedo   in   turn   caring   for   them   in   a   way   that   he   did   for   few   others.   hundreds   of   healing   vials   swapped   over   the   years,   fireside   stories,   little   trinkets,   and   even   banter:   things   with   xiao   were   easy,   and   albedo   was   not   a   talkative   soul   -   but   with   the   adeptus,   he   often   found   himself   filling   their   silence   at   random,   ever   so   animated   about   his   newest   finding.   

ㅤㅤㅤhe   was   particularly   excited   about   the   relationship   between   the   pyro   and   cryo   regisvine   clippings   he'd   found   back   at   his   lab,   long   since   devolved   into   an   extremely   detailed   depiction   of   their   elemental   properties   and   at   a   molecular   level,   how   pairing   them   together   might   help   rebalance   their   aggravations.   albedo   is   animated   when   he   speaks   about   the   topic,   occasionally   glancing   over   his   shoulder   at   the   conqueror   of   demons,   nary   a   thought   being   paid   to   the   narrow   cliff   wall   and   the   dangers   of   the   perilous   drop   below.   no   -   he   simply   must   explain   to   xiao   how   the   cryo   regisvine   had   actually   started   craving   the   interaction   of   pyro   and-   

ㅤㅤㅤthe   alchemist   blinks,   luminous   eyes   wide   as   one   second   the   path   where   his   foot   was   is   there   -   and   the   next   it   is   gone.   yet   he   has   no   time   to   register   the   echoing   tumble   of   the   rocks   below   -   not   when   xiao   pulls   him   close,   strong   but   lithe   embrace   a   firm   grip   about   his   waist.   on   reflex,   albedo's   hands   raise   -   resting   lightly   at   the   other's   strong   shoulders,   gloves   curling   into   muscle   while   the   clash   of   teal   and   gold   fills   his   head.   the   artistic   part   of   albedo's   brain   once   more   registers   xiao   as   heartbreakingly   beautiful,   and   yet   the   other   part...   the   strangely   human   part,   is   waylaid   by   the   sudden   stuttering   in   his   chest,   the   glow   of   gold   from   his   throat   as   the   homunculus   swallows   thickly   and   simply   stares.   albedo   doesn't   need   previous   life   experience   to   tell   him   what   he   wants   to   do   next.   tilt   head,   lean   forward,   and   -   

ㅤㅤㅤhe   resolves   to   let   xiao   slip   away   -   stepping   back   from   their   embrace   with   his   usual   weightless   grace.   yet   albedo   does   not   actually   let   them,   a   hand   curling   into   their   tunic   to   yank   them   back   to   him,   chest   to   chest   once   more   and   somehow,   even   closer.   behind   them,   there   is   the   sound   of   tumbling   rocks,   but   albedo   pays   that   no   mind,   too   focused   on   the   way   their   noses   are   pressed   together,   the   centimeters   between   their   lips...   oh   how   strange   it   is   to   want   something   aside   from   knowledge,   aside   from   rhine's   approval.   albedo   finds   in   this   moment,   he   desperately   needs   that   kiss   but...   

ㅤㅤㅤit's   a   guise.   a   silly   one.   but   he   takes   it,   letting   his   eyes   drift   shut   a   moment   -   and   their   foreheads   drop   together.   albedo   exhales,   still   so   impossibly   close   to   those   soft   lips,   but   instead   just   drinking   in   xiao's   proximity   a   moment   longer.   certainly   -   the   yaksha   can   see   through   his   feint,   but   albedo   does   not   mind.   ❝   oh.   ❞   he   murmurs   so   softly,   eyes   remaining   closed   to   the   world   around   them,   and   voice   so   quiet   it   rings   like   chimes   between   them,   ❝   you   gave   me   a   fright,   xiao.   ❞   and   if   albedo's   hand   takes   it's   time   coasting   down   the   adeptus'   side,   he   chalks   it   up   to   'nerves'   from   a   near   fall.
