here's a little wip share!

Since I've been out of art school for a while now I've been craving a good long term project, and what better subject than my favorite show? :) I'm pretending like Anastasia is an animated production/video game/whatever and I'm in charge of putting together a 'concept art book'/illustrated guide (for lack of a better term). Which means there would be extensive artwork of each costume, character lineups, background/set paintings, and prop studies. I'm currently still working on drawing and rendering all the assets and once they're all drawn I'll arrange them in a page layout as if they'll be printed in a big book!

But since it will be several months/year+ before it's finished I thought i could share some of my progress so far and possibly document the process as we go along. Here is an act i lineup of the principal characters, some examples of character costume sheets, and a couple screenshots of some ensemble costumes in various stages of completion. I've also rendered several props and I've started a couple background paintings, but I'll share those later.

Why embark such a tedious project, you ask? Well! because. i want to. So far it's been pretty fun. my obsessive collection/scholarly archive of reference photos of this show are finally being put to good use 🙈

So, @belphegor1982 asked me for my thoughts on the BTTF musical which I saw about 10 days ago, and I've managed to put them together and keep them as spoiler-free as possible--

Even before you go into the theatre, the merch store is separate, which is great when it's a rainy January night and you're waiting for the doors to open (which I was). I'm not sure if this has been a thing for previous productions at the Winter Garden Theatre, but for other Broadway shows I've seen in different theatres (Phantom and Anastasia), the merch was sold inside the theatre, and you needed a ticket to get to it/wait til the doors opened.

The pre-show immersion/ambiance is fantastic; not even Phantom can boast that.

There are numerous easter eggs for fans of the movies; it's so fun spotting them all.

It does not take long for the fourth wall to come tumbling down, and it is glorious. Marty even lampshades it in the opening number.

@knickynoo mentioned this in her writeup, but Doc and Marty are just as neurodivergent (if not moreso) than their movie counterparts

Doc is also so very obviously asexual in this version, I love it.

A small thing, but we actually get to hear Doc say "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything." In the movie, everyone credits him for saying it, but we never actually hear him say it.

Doc's involvement in the Manhattan Project is canonized in the musical-verse!

The DeLorean is borderline sentient and sassy

Most people know by now that they changed Twin Pines Doc's cause of death/the reason Marty goes back in time, and it works so much better for both practicality reasons on stage, and for the fact that the original was a charging bull elephant in the room.

Goldie Wilson gets an absolute banger for his song (as well he should!)

Another small thing, I like the little addition of Doc's fear of heights.

@wromwood pointed out how only Doc and Marty seem to acknowledge the existence of the chorus ensemble (Lorraine gets some backup singers for her number out of nowhere, but she takes no notice of them). I didn't even realize this until he mentioned it, and now I'm fascinated by the implications of Doc and Marty being hyper-aware of the fourth wall for whatever reasons.

The Act I closing number is gloriously chaotic.

...I could do an entire post about why I love "For the Dreamers" so much and how it delves so deeply into Doc's character. Just... GAH. This man has dealt with so many naysayers and considers himself a failure (it's telling that he did technically have a success with the Manhattan Project, but still considers that a failure--I'd theorize because he obviously feels so dang guilty about having the blood of innocent civilians on his hands as a result of it) but now he has hope that he will accomplish something great.

Not only do we have Marty worrying about Doc dying in 1985, we get to see him worried and unsure of his own fate. This kid has been Through It, and it isn't over yet.

THE WAY THEY DID THE ENCHANTMENT UNDER THE SEA DANCE. I cannot spoil this; you must experience this firsthand, but I will assure you that "Earth Angel" and "Johnny B Goode" are there in all their glory.

The Clocktower scene is spectacular. You're wondering how they'll pull it off onstage, and they just do it.

Others have mentioned this BUT WE GET THE LONE PINE HUG THAT SHOULD'VE BEEN IN THE MOVIE.

The absolute best meta joke comes courtesy of Jennifer near the end. I cannot spoil this either, but if you know, you know.

@six-musical-refs and I have a very long running debate on how do we think the ensemble of a few shows would look if it expanded. And by debate I mean I am obsessed with old school 20+ people ensembles, and she is really good at logistics and considering whats both efficient and realistic. So a while back I started sketching some costume ideas based on the Anastasia version of that debate (and then obsessed over it for a week until I had finished designs). And honestly I love how this came out

Some notes

The anastasia replica production ensemble is split between 2-3 singers (changes depending on the production) and 4 dancers plus 2 swings one for singers and one for dancers. Swings expanded to 3-4 in the European productions (which is a great call because a single person covering four tracks dancing en pointe is actually insane). And still we felt like it was not enough. Elisabeth has been playing with ideas for this for years and it took me about 10 seconds after she told me how things work to agree. The show works with the ensemble it has but it also requires some lightning fast complicated costume changes, scenes where half the stage feels slightly empty, finding legit ballerinas that can sing in classical style and a technically incomplete swan lake cast.

So between all that we have a full on concept on how an expanded ensemble could look like. The shortest version of that is adding one singer and two dancers plus vacation swings. And designs are made with that in mind.

In the show the singer and dancer dresses have different details so I went with those plus trying to find color palettes that weren't in use already but also wouldnt clash with the rest. Left to right it is singer, two dancers, dancer swing and singer swing.

Fits really well with the Paris show designs actually (feat the art of those I made last year)

Inspired by seeing a post in the Elisabeth tag, I'm also for fun listing my musical theatre dream roles as someone who 1) only dabbles in theatre 2) is the wrong casting type for most of these 😂 In order of how realistic it would be for me to actually play them, from most to least!!

1. Sally Bowles in Cabaret I have the vocal range, I am the "correct" age and gender, she isn't actually supposed to be a perfect singer... maybe we could do a prod where she also isnt supposed to be a great dancer 🤣

2. Roxie in Chicago same as prev, I am also blonde xD I could probably also do Velma but again, not that strong a dancer. But I like both hehe. OHH and at one point I was actually considering auditioning for something with when you're good to mama 🤣 I'm too young but I think she's also a great character

3. Fantine in Les Mis I could do it!! I would also LOVE to be a random ensemble character in Les Mis, or one of the side barricade guys so I would have 9000 fans on tumblr just based on looking at another actor for a second too long or something

4. Lucy in J&H Looove her songs, I could do it!

5. Trixie/Magenta in Rocky Horror Might work and would be fun, I want to sing Science Fiction Double Feature ajjfkfkd thats the reason

6. Carlotta in POTO No range...

Stay I pray you...

The beauty, the emotion, the reference to the movie, the thought of "there's no going back", the fact that Ipolitov dies immediately after, the ensemble score, Anya's ending vocals, the acappella, and the way it mirrors reality.

This is truly a beautiful and moving song that encapsulates the show as a whole while being, along with Close the Door, a truly depressing song in this everything works out in the end show. Though, the difference between it and Close the Door is that Stay I Pray you doesn't get resolved. Anastasia and the Dowager Empress find each other while Ipolitov dies, the people at the Neva Club still drown their sorrows, and Russia will never return to what it once was. It also is a window into reality because in the universe of the show Anya gets to live her life with Dimitri but in real life there was no happy ending for anyone. Even better that this is based off of the 1997 movie which came out before Anastasia's body was found where this musical is a (sort of) stage adaptation of the movie when the movie was actively proven fiction by this time. Beautiful!
