9TH NIGHT - 'Khakarra'
Arius Anum Deckard
Brigand. Warmonger. Warrior.
A once famous scourge within The Outer Rim, after the disappearance of Agenor Sinai, Arius found himself advantaged not to keep pillaging and thieving uselessly with his annoying band of pestlike followers, but to fly under the banner of Dana Sinai. With a steady flow of reasons to fight and places to spend the night, the seemingly unstoppable 'Devil of Throne’s Keep' only proved to be far more dangerous when not begrudgingly serving as someone else’s chess piece in order to find his next place to be.
Climbing the rankings as quick as many did during 'The Restructure', not many managed to fly as high as Arius did, slowly making his way comfortably to the Ninth Rank over the years, earning the respect of fellow warriors he’s come to recognize as his equals.
Slovenly, yet cunning. Brazen, yet carefully calculating. Small, yet titanic. It would do you no well to mistake him for any other foolhardy knave on the battlefield. Yet know it would help you little to win and only marginally more to survive.
Twelve rings upon his hands that grant rebirth to all who meet them, and the sound of his approach alone enough to frighten off those who lack the mettle, it’s no wonder why he’s been granted the title of 'Khakkara'.
……
lore aside arius is an incredibly silly and ridiculous man who i care about a fair bit. he’s one of the top ten knights! isn’t that interesting? i wonder why he’s placed so high if he’s just known for punching? how quaint!

.。*♡゚ Much is said about Lucifer, how he fell from the heavens for rebelling. But little is known about his vast history, so I decided to make a post to comment a little. It's not like I know everything, there's still a lot I need to research, but research is ongoing, so I'll probably update this post as I learn new things about him.
First of all, Lucifer was not always an "evil name". Canonized by the Catholic Church - although many do not know him - Saint Lucifer was a bishop of the Archdiocese of Calhari, in Sardinia. He became well known for his staunch opposition to Arianism, an anti-Trinitarian Christological view held by the followers of Arius, a Christian priest of Alexandria in the times of the early Church.
Arius denied the existence of consubstantiality between Jesus and God, conceiving Christ as a pre-existent and created being, subordinate to God and his son. For Arius and the Arians, Jesus was not God but rather a man who descended from him, like all others who walked the Earth. Therefore, for Saint Lucifer, Jesus was God made flesh, the creator himself manifested in matter.
His name shows that Lucifer was not, at least in the 4th century, a synonym for "Adversary". In fact, the proper name "Lucifer" was not used to refer to the "devil" in ancient times. Before, the word was used only in its common meaning, as something that announced the dawn, the morning star. Nothing more, nothing less.
His name literally comes from the Latin Lux (Light) and Ferre (Bearer).
The word "lucifer" is a common noun, meaning "light-bearer" or "morning star". It is "lucifer" with a lowercase "l", unlike the proper name, "Lucifer". Incidentally, this is not the only occasion in which the term "lucifer" is used with this meaning.
The Vulgate of Saint Jerome includes, in the book of Job, the word "lucifer" (cf. Job 11:17), which is translated as "dawn" in the edition of João Ferreira de Almeida itself.
Saint Peter, when referring to the voice of God the Father confirming the mission of Jesus, asks that the words of the prophecy be held firm, "donec dies illucescat, et lucifer oriatur in cordibus vestris – until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts" (2 Pt 1:19).
"Lucifer," as the entity we know, is not in the Bible. In Isaiah 14:12, the Hebrew word is celestial. Significantly, "star of man," it is clearly a reference to Venus — the planet with which Lucifer is most associated. The text itself is about the king of Babylon and does not refer to the "Adversary" of the Bible.
Jewish sources generally do not identify the figure in Isaiah as being a reference to Satan or any other kind of demonic figure, but later Christian scholars started to interpret it as a reference to Satan, who is elsewhere said to be cast down from heaven, although at first, it looks like they did not see "Lucifer" as a name, but read the passage as being a poetic comparison to the morning star itself.
These interpretations have fallen in and out of favor, but in the Renaissance, it became more popular to use Lucifer as a personal name of the devil.
"Lucifer" is the Latin term that Jerome used in the Vulgate to translate helel. Most moderns believe that Isaiah is using a well-known mythological tale as an analogy to the failure and consequences of the rebellion and king of Babylon.
According to Canaanite history, the morning star is personified as the god Attar, who attempted to occupy the throne of Baal and, finding himself unable to do so, descended and ruled the underworld. The original myth may have been about the lesser god Helel attempting to dethrone the Canaanite supreme god El, who lived on a mountain to the north.
Hermann Gunkel's reconstruction of the myth told of a mighty warrior named Hêlal, whose ambition was to ascend higher than all the other star deities, but who had to descend into the depths; thus, he portrayed as a battle the process by which the bright morning star fails to reach the highest point in the sky before being extinguished by the rising sun.
In Greco-Roman civilization, Lucifer was the name of the planet Venus when it appeared in the morning. It corresponds to the Greek names Phosphorus ("light-bearer") and Eosphorus ("dawn-bearer").
The Latin name of the entity was later absorbed into Christianity as a name for the devil. Modern scholarship generally translates the term in the relevant biblical passage (Isaiah 14:12), where the Greek Septuagint reads ὁ ἑωσφόρος ὁ πρωὶ ἀνατέλλων, as "morning star" or "shining one" rather than a proper name, Lucifer, as found in the Latin Vulgate.
In LaVeyan Satanism, Lucifer is described by The Satanic Bible as one of the four crown princes of hell, particularly that of the East, the 'lord of the air', and is called the bringer of light, the morning star, intellectualism, and enlightenment, which its true. He rules over those aspects and more.
As a name for the planet in its morning aspect, "Lucifer" (Light-Bearer) is a proper name. In Greco-Roman civilization, he was often personified and considered a god and in the Roman version considered the son of Aurora and Cephalus or, in his Greek counterpart, Eos and Helios. At that time, he was represented as a boy bearing a torch.
Regardless of the version, as the Lord of Light and Knowledge, Lucifer is demanding of his followers, but kind and gentle - he has a very cute epithet, which is the sweet prince. Lucifer is nothing if not charming, a protector who always works to help you become better. Growth is constant, Lucifer is the epitome of growth, direct and sweet at the same time, telling you what you need to do and letting you figure out how to do it.
How did such an entity have its image distorted to what we know today?
In the Book of Isaiah, chapter 14, the king of Babylon is condemned in a prophetic vision by the prophet Isaiah and is called הֵילֵל בֶּן-שָׁחַר (Helel ben Shachar, Hebrew for "the bright one, son of the morning"), who is addressed as הילל בן שחר (Hêlêl ben Šāḥar).
The title "Hêlêl ben Šāḥar" refers to the planet Venus as the morning star, and this is how the Hebrew word is usually interpreted. The Hebrew word transliterated as Hêlêl or Heylel occurs only once in the Hebrew Bible. The Septuagint translates הֵילֵל in Greek as Ἑωσφόρος (Heōsphoros), "bringer of the dawn", the ancient Greek name for the morning star.
Similarly, the Vulgate translates הֵילֵל in Latin as Lucifer, the name in that language for the morning star. According to Strong's Concordance based on the King James Bible, the original Hebrew word means "shining one, light-bearer," and the English translation given in the King James text is the Latin name for the planet Venus, "Lucifer," as it was already in the Wycliffe Bible.
The morning star metaphor that Isaiah 14:12 applied to a king of Babylon gave rise to the general use of the Latin word for "morning star/lucifer", capitalized, as the original name of the devil before his fall, linking Isaiah 14:12 with Luke 10 ("I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven") and interpreting the passage in Isaiah as an allegory of Satan's fall from heaven.
Considering pride as a grave sin that reaches its peak in self-deification, Lucifer (Hêlêl) became the model for the devil. As a result, Lucifer was identified with the devil in Christianity, but what really perpetuated his image as king of demons, during the Renaissance, it became more poplar to use Lucifer as the devil's name; it used to pops up in a lot of Christian popular literature, such as Dante Alighieri's Inferno, Joost van den Vondel's Lucifer, and John Milton's Paradise Lost.
Early medieval Christianity made a strong distinction between Lucifer and Satan. While Lucifer, as the devil, is fixed in Hell, Satan carries out Lucifer's desires as his vassal. In true, Satan is a title, derived probably from the word Shaitam, and it means Adversary.

What would you say is the earliest church heresy? Like, the original big no-no
Oh see now you've hit an interesting little rabbit hole without realizing it, because we know both a whole lot and also not much about the early days of the Christian church as we understand it.
So this faith leader guy gets executed or whatever, right? And now you have a bunch of his post-postmortem followers running around spreading his branch of weird Judaism which gets twisted into the first beginnings of Messianic Christianity. But this is back in ye olde days, and also the Romans are gonna be killing any Christians they can find, so the earliest days of the church are mystery cults sporadically popping up like mushrooms. (Is the Holy Spirit like a mycelial network? Who can say)
One of these early Christians was a very popular guy named Arius. Arius told his followers that Jesus WAS born of God, but that he was NOT God himself (the word you're looking for vis a vis that relationship is that Jesus is consubstantial with God, as in, made of the same simultaneous divinity.) and therefore should not be worshipped as one would God.
Then some time passes and all the big bishops of this hot new gig called Christianity realize, wait, hold on, we need to get shit straightened out. We can't ALL be calling ourselves Christian when people are saying Jesus was a hologram, or that he was born of God but isnt God, or that he was just some guy that God really liked. We need to all sit down and decide what we as a unified and universal group believe about our religion. So they all go down to this little place called Nicaea where everyone hashes out exactly what they believe in as Christians, and the end result is that Arius was shot down, which is why in the Nicene Creed there's that one specific line that goes something like this:
Et in unum Dominum Iesum Christum, Filium Dei unigenitum, ex Patre natum ante omnia saecula. Deum de Deo, Lumen de Lumine, Deum verum de Deo vero, genitum non factum, consubstantialem Patri; per quem omnia facta sunt.
Sharp eyes may have spotted that special little word consubstantialem in there. The earliest founders of the early church basically made certain that in their formalized dogma, Arianism would always be called heretical, because Jesus' position in the trinity requires him to be equal to but distinct from the Father. All of trinitarian Christianity agrees that Arianism is a no go.
Personally I do think we should have more Judasian heresies though. Like I guess I get why so many early heresies are centered around the nature of the trinity and specifically J Dog but it does begin to grate.

I've just saw the opening credits for Netflix DMC, I laughed for about 10 seconds till I saw Mundus and Arius and thought to myself " Oh shit, they're really going the whole nine yards with this."
I'm just glad that Devils Never Cry isn't remixed to the pits again like MvC: Beyond, I think Limp Biscuit is an okay choice. It's telling me that I'm I'm for a goofy ride, not being too serious like the original anime.

"Nectar"
Characters:
Lady (Devil May Cry)
Trish (Devil May Cry)
Lucia (Devil May Cry)
Relationships:
Lady x Trish, incidental
Premise:
Trish and Lady are called to Vie de Marli for an unusual job.
Content Warnings:
Suicide ideation
Consumption of human blood
Author's Note:
This is my first time writing for Lucia. I haven't really played DMC2 from start to finish, but I think I get the gist of the character. Feedback is always welcome.
Lady crossed her arms, and looked up at the clocktower standing before her. "This is the place, right?"
Trish nodded. "This is the place."
Lady looked back to her partner. "Did she tell us anything about this job?"
"Not really." Trish put her hands on her hips. "Just that there's a demon threatening Vie de Marli, that she can't deal with on her own."
"Some 'Protector' she must be..." Lady sighed. "And you're sure this wasn't some excuse to get Dante to come here?"
"Trust me, she's good at what she does." Trish corrected.
Lady rolled her eyes. "If you say so..."
"And I'm sure." Trish continued. "She still asked for us to come even after I told her that Dante is in the Underworld, remember? Besides, the call sounded really urgent. Like she was in danger herself."
"Alright." Lady slung Kalina Ann off of her shoulder. "Let's get this over with." She fired her grappling hook to the top of the clock tower, and braced her feet against the wall.
Trish stepped up behind Lady, wrapped her hands around her shoulders, and wrapped her legs around her waist. "I'm ready when you are."
"Trish, you can fly."
"We're in public. We do want to freak out the locals, do we?"
"Like a heavily armed foreigner abseiling up the side of a clock tower wouldn't do the job?"
"Well, maybe I just wanted an excuse to hold onto my hot girlfriend." Trish smiled.
"Trish, we're working right now."
"Well, if you really think you can't carry me, I'll hop right off..."
"Playing to my ego, now? I'm starting to think you're just lazy."
"I'm just trying to be realistic, baby. You're only human, and you are halfway through your life already..."
"Not called for."
"Am I wrong? Then prove it."
Lady huffed. "Well-played."
At once, Lady hit a trigger on Kalina Ann, and began to ascend the building, Trish holding her body tightly.
Trish let out a giggle.
* * *
The pair reached the top of the tower, and looked around for their client. Eventually, they spotted her, sitting in a far corner.
Trish approached her first, with Lady following close behind. "Lucia?"
"Hello..." Lucia spoke weakly. Upon closer inspection, she did not appear to be in good condition. The skin on her face appeared to be flaking away, and her eyes had changed to a sickly yellow-green color. She was also shaking.
Trish crouched in front of her. "Are you alright? Who, or what, did this to you?"
"No one... This was always going to happen-" Lucia was cut off by a coughing fit. "-eventually."
Trish cocked her head. "What do you mean?"
"The first thing you should know about me is that I'm..." Lucia sighed. "...A demon."
"Obviously." Trish stated bluntly. "I've never known a human who can fight the way you do."
Lucia continued. "I was one of many created by a man called Arius, a sorcerer who wished to rule the world. But I was 'defective', and he discarded me. A woman named Matier discovered me, and raised me as her own daughter. Many years passed before I learned the truth."
Trish nodded.
"When I met Arius, he told me that everything returns to its original form. It seems that he was right... I tried to deny it, but deep down I always knew he was..."
"What do you mean?" Trish crossed her arms.
"It started about one month ago, when Matier... She passed." Lucia's voice broke. "It was she who raised me to be human. It was her love that kept me human. Not long after she was gone, I began to feel these... Cravings."
"Oh..." Trish interjected. "You mean for human blood, don't you?"
Lucia nodded. "I tried to fight it, but as my body grew weaker, so did my resolve... Two days ago, I nearly attacked a civilian."
Trish frowned. "Lucia, did you call us here to kill you?"
"...I've accepted that there's no hope for me. I would rather die before losing myself to my true nature."
"Lucia..." Trish put a hand on Lucia's shoulder. "I know that what you're going through must be scary, but this isn't the way out."
"There is no way out!" Lucia spar. "It's only going to get worse..."
Lady butted in. "Can I ask you something?"
Lucia's eyes met Lady's. Her stomach growled. "...She shouldn't be here."
Lady laughed. "If you could pose any threat to me, in the state that you're in, then it's time for me to hang up my guns." She continued. "So you've never drank blood before? In your whole life?"
Lucia shook her head. "Absolutely not."
"Frankly, I find that hard to believe. You've always been a demon, right?"
Lucia's eyes fell.
"Hm..." Lady placed a hand on her chin. "Matier, your mother... She was human, right?"
Lucia nodded. "Yes."
"Did she cook for you?"
"Yes. We often had dinner together..." Lucia's stomach growled again.
"I think that solves it, then. Your mother was feeding you her blood."
"What?!" Lucia's eyes were wide. "That's not possible!"
"It's the only thing that is possible." Lady asserted.
"She's right, Lucia." Trish added. "The only thing in the Human World that can sustain a demon is human blood."
"But..." Lucia trailed off. She quickly began to cry.
Trish and Lady looked to one another, unsure of how to respond.
Lucia continued. "Why did she hide the truth from me? Why did she always hide the truth from me?"
Lady sat beside Lucia. "A parent will do some really stupid things, if they think it's in their child's best interests. As much as she kind of screwed you up, I think she really loved you."
"She did..." Lucia wiped her tears. "Then why did she leave me unprepared?"
"That's a good question... Was she expecting to die?" Lady asked.
"It was rather sudden, actually. Do you think she intended to tell me?"
"I'm sure she did." Lady nodded. "Maybe she just put it off for too long. It sounds like she never wanted you to feel different."
"Right... Right, that makes sense." Lucia's voice grew steadier.
Trish spoke up. "You know, Lucia... I'm a demon too. And I've lived peacefully among humans for years now."
"You have?" Lucia looked to Trish. "But how?"
"By staying fed. Lady makes sure of that."
Lady nodded. "Our top theory is that blood offered willingly is especially potent. She doesn't even need to feed from me that much."
"That, and Lady's body is just incredibly fit and strong." Trish added.
"Well, of course it is, but I'm one-of-a-kind. In the long term, Lucia needs someone who trusts her and cares for her like Matier did."
Lucia nodded. "That makes sense..." She sighed. "I'm sorry about this."
"It's alright. I mean, who in the devil hunting trade hasn't felt like dying before?"
"Lady..."
"Kidding, Trish. But seriously, we're happy to help. In fact, here-" Lady drew a knife from her belt, and pricked her finger. "-this one's on the house."
Lucia hesitated for but a moment. "...Okay." She placed her lips on Lady's finger, closed her eyes, and began to suckle.
"Atta-girl." Lady gave her a pat on the back.
Lucia's flesh began to mend, and she soon pulled away. She opened her eyes, which returned to their normal color. "Wow..."
Trish chuckled. "She hits like a truck, doesn't she?"
Lucia managed a smile. "I do feel a lot better... Thank you, Lady."
"Sure thing." Lady smiled back, as she wrapped a band-aid around her finger. "And there's more where that came from, we'll send you a stockpile."
Trish interjected. "But in the long term, you should really work on making some friends. Isolating yourself isn't gonna protect anyone, you're just gonna hurt yourself more. Trust me, I've seen it happen. Besides, people are more accepting than you think. If someone really knows you and cares about you, they'll accept you for who you really are."
Lucia sighed. "That's a lot to think about."
"I can imagine." Trish wrapped her arm around her. "Don't be afraid to reach out to me if you need someone to talk to."
"Thank you, Trish. Thank you both." Lucia stood. "I know I never promised payment, but I feel that I owe you something for the trouble."
"Well, now I'm pretty hungry." Lady stood up herself. "Maybe you could introduce us to some of the local cuisine?"
Trish stood as well. "I could certainly go for a bite."
Lucia smiled. "I would like that."

for fanfic reasons I was googling the meaning and origin of Zeref's reincarnation name "Arius", since it seemed obvious why Mavis' reincarnation was "Mio" but Zeref's didn't start with a Z
and apparently Arius is a Greek / Latin boy name meaning stuff like "warlike spirit", "devoted to Ares" (the war god), and my favorite of the list "bane". but also it was specifically the name of an ascetic and priest that was exiled for blasphemy and (allegedly) founded his own theology called Arianism.
and if that ain't perfect for the guy cursed by the god of magic, formed his own empire, caused basically all evil wizards to worship him specifically, and led the final war of the main series-

I'm having thoughts about a plot starring Trish, Lucia, and Lady. Posting them here:
The enemy faction is an organization devoted to fighting demons, similar to the Order of the Sword, but with more of a modern military aesthetic. They were a bit of a fringe group up until the Qliphoth incident, after which they received a massive influx of enlistees and funding.
By some means, they learn about the original Nightmare, a demon created by Mundus from his own blood, that had the power to destroy the Underworld by itself. They also learn of Trish and her origins, and seek to secure a sample of her blood to create their own Nightmare, perhaps even multiple Nightmares (this is based on another old idea of mine).
Much of their intel was fed to them by Machiavelli, who I've pitched as a villain for a plot starring Vergil and Dante in the past. However, I actually think he'd be more of a begrudging ally to our heroines. Machiavelli is a war profiteer, but this organization wants a weapon to end all weapons, to start a war to end all wars, and that would render him obsolete.
Trish and Lady would both be highly distrustful of Machiavelli. Trish and Dante parted ways because she felt responsible for Enzo Ferino losing his hand to one of Machiavelli's creations in the Drama CD. Lady herself spent a whole month possessed by one of them in DMC5. Come to think of it, Trish is the one who brought Artemis to the Qliphoth in the first place, you'd think she'd feel terrible about what happened to Lady based on her reaction to what happened to Enzo.
They might try to sway Lady to their side, she's an ordinary human who relies on human-made weaponry, they think she's like them. However, she doesn't find humans inherently more trustworthy than demons. Her father was born human, after all, and most of her friends are at least part demon, especially the very demon these people are trying to exploit.
The organization has a contract with the Ouroboros Corporation. It's new CEO is actually a clone of Arius created by the same means as mannequin/secretary demons like Lucia. There's an element of tragedy to this character, he's pretty evil, but he was never given the choice to be anything else. Trish would relate to him, maybe she'd try to reach out to him the way Dante reached out to her. I don't imagine he's entirely aware of what this organization is planning, he wants to use demonic power to rule the world, not to destroy the demon world. If he found out, perhaps he too would become a begrudging ally. But I don't think he'd choose to abandon his evil ways if given the chance.
A leader in this organization is a surviving family member of Eva's, perhaps a parent or a sibling, who blames Sparda for her death, and wants a piece of this mysterious demon wearing her face. Trish might try to explain her real origins, and this character is just appalled to learn that their sister gave birth to two half-demons, assuming they'd even believe Trish.
While Lucia loves Matier very much, and is grateful for the love she's been given, there's tension between them due to how long Matier hid the truth about Lucia's origins, which comes up again after the reemergence of the Ouroboros Corporation and Arius.
One mechanic from Dante's DMC2 moveset that should transfer to Lucia is the Desperate Devil Trigger, also called the Majin Devil Trigger. A major source of internal conflict for Lucia is a fear of completely giving in to her demonic nature, of losing control of herself and becoming a threat to others. While this fear is mostly irrational, suddenly gaining a more powerful devil form, one that manifests in dire circumstances where Lucia is fighting to survive, would validate that fear.
A piece of lore I've speculated about before is Anima Mercury, described in DMC4 as an 'artificial soul'. I could see this organization messing with that, essentially utilizing robots. Perhaps this includes a return of Infested Tank and Infested Chopper.
I've talked before about how a female-led DMC game should focus on the notion of given v.s. chosen family, and I think the ideas given so far could serve as a vehicle for that. Trish is being targeted because of something her maker did. Lady's motives are heavily informed by her experiences with her human father and with the demons she calls friends. One antagonist is a mannequin demon like Lucia, made in the likeness of the man who created and disposed of her. Another antagonist is Eva's next of kin, who disapproves of the family that she started with Sparda. Lucia is reconciling her love for Matier, who chose to love Lucia when she was discarded by her maker, with the fact that Matier lied to her about it for her whole life.
Also, what if Gloria was a real character who moved to this organization after Trish stole her identity, infiltrated the Order of the Sword, and helped bring it down?
