Opening my Amy Elise doll

Meet Haley!

So I'm sure you all know I love rare and discontinued 18 inch dolls. It's a lot of fun finding out that they exist, hunting them down on the secondary market, receiving them in the mail, introducing them into my collection, seeing my collection become more diverse, and knowing that I'm one of the very few people who owns them. I also think it's fascinating to observe the individual differences between brands. While my 18 inch doll collection started with American Girl dolls, it certainly won't end there.

Haley was no exception to that. I first noticed her while searching for another brand of rare dolls. I stumbled across her listing, tried to research but couldn't find much about her, and so decided to think about it for a few weeks. She was so inexpensive (less than the price of a new Our Generation dolls) and yet looked like she was lovingly made with high quality materials. The mystery around her was so intriguing that I went ahead and bought her.

When I received her, the box gave me the URL of the now-defunct Amy Elise brand, and so I was able to plug it into the Wayback machine and see the site as it appeared when it was active. I also noticed the box refers to Amy Elise as "books and dolls with a purpose". What purpose could that be? I wondered if, based on Haley's lab coat and clipboard, that maybe these dolls encouraged young girls to consider careers in science. I didn't receive a book with my doll, so I could only speculate.

The lab coat was featured on Hayley's profile on the Amy Elise website, which was archived by the Wayback machine from 2007 to 2009.

The other available doll, Marissa, is a young detective who likes to solve mysteries. A good start to a later career in forensics, I guess?

But if you read the introductions closely, each mentions learning lessons about faith. And if you look closely at the pictures of the two dolls, you can see the golden cross necklace each of them is wearing.

I was way off in my assumption. Rather than being science-focused, Amy Elise was one of the many Christian alternatives to American Girl that began popping up in the 1990s. That's still happening today, although it's becoming less common as smaller brands realize how hard it is to compete with American Girl's massive advertising budget, as well as more budget-friendly alternatives like Our Generation. For that reason they tend to quietly go defunct within a few short years.

I think this calls for a deep dive into this small, obscure brand.

The Wayback machine doesn't always archive the complete sites, and especially not the pictures, but it seems to have gotten a pretty comprehensive shot of the site.

Here is the mission statement and letter from the CEO of Amy Elise.

Fortunately this statement manages to convey their purpose without insulting American Girl, or referring negatively to non-Christian girls. I also did Google the CEO's name to see if she's still involved in doll production of any kind, and I can't find evidence that she is.

Elsewhere on the site, there are a few other faith-related products sold separately from the dolls.

There are a few other outfits and accessories for Haley and Marissa as well. Larger images weren't archived. None of the outfit descriptions give any sort of link to the characters' stories.

That's about all that's interesting about the site. The author's blog is more of a journal of her life and thoughts. Only the first page was archived and nothing in it is related to the dolls or their stories.

So let's open the doll. (You might have already spotted her a few weeks ago when I made a post about my dolls visiting a pumpkin patch--Haley was there. I actually got her in October and just haven't gotten around to posting this until now, mid-December.)

Haley was never removed from her box, so she's in flawless condition. She came with a pretend clipboard, pretend pen, and a cross necklace.

Her outfit underneath the lab coat is very cute.

Everything fastens with snaps instead of Velcro.

Her shirt has buttons on the left shoulder.

Her jeans have snaps and a zipper.

Her wig is one of the nicest I've ever encountered! It's soft but not slippery, and feels very realistic.

It did come off pretty easily when I tugged on it, so I moved it over to give her a side part, which I think makes her look a bit younger than she does. To me she doesn't look ten years old like her book says. She definitely has a more mature look to her face.

Overall I'm really impressed at her high quality materials. She's made of vinyl, but it does look like porcelain. She has a cloth torso and the standard articulation at the hips, shoulders, and neck.

She fits nicely into American Girl clothes, despite being just a little bit slimmer.

She fits into Maplelea clothes too, and this robotics club outfit looks perfect on her. I like the pink and purple hair on her but I don't think this wig change will be permanent.

Her feet are slightly bigger than AG doll feet, as seen on the left. I tried Haley's shoes on my Maplelea doll Léonie, and they were a much better match!

Sonic opinions that may or may not be controversial

Sonic character design is at its worst when they try to make it as "Sonic-like" as possible, and at its best when it's at its most unconventional (i.e. Fang the Sniper, the Witchcarters, the Kukku Empire, the humans in Sonic Unleashed and Chronicles, SatAM and AOSTH characters, etc)

Infinite's maskless design is lame

Sally Acorn, Amy Rose, Princess Elise and Lanolin aren't the worst characters, you just want to hate female characters. There are way worse written characters and you choose those three to bash on

That said, Chris Thorndyke and Charmy Bee aren't annoying, you just hate children. Chris' unwilling to let Sonic go in the finale of Sonic X's season two wasn't a dick move, that's his character arc. And of course Charmy being loud, annoying and basically dooming the resistance by turning himself into a zombot to try and save someone makes sense. He's a god damn six year old

Ian Flynn trying to "simplify" Fang the Sniper takes away all that made him interesting, his weirdness and confusing design (he literally took away Fang's hybrid side and him being originated from the Special Zone. Blaze exists, why can't Fang be from another dimension too?)

Gemerl not having Emerl's personality isn't neither a betrayal nor a bad take on his character. In fact, it makes his contrast with Emerl and comparison to Omega and Metal Sonic better. Shard is not coming back guys. Cope

Sonic Forces should've been less focused on Classic Sonic and more on the Rookie. In fact, Shadow should've replaced Classic Sonic in the storyline

Sonic Colors is worse than Sonic 06 in terms of storyline and the DS version should've been the real deal

As fun and awesome and amazing as Sonadow is (totally not speaking from bias), making it non-canon is the best for everyone

Characters like Shadow and Omega shouldn't have a classic form, but it would be interesting to see other modern characters in classic form

Classic characters shouldn't be confined to the "classic universe". Archie's best parts were when classic and modern characters interacted (Mighty and the Werehog, Shadow and the Hooligans, Jet and Speedy)

The idea of the Babylon Rogues being associated to the Kukku Empire in the past IS an interesting concept. What isn't is the Kukku Empire being associated with the Babylon Garden. They should be their own villains

As goofy as Sonic Chronicles was, it wasn't a bad game at all

Western and eastern Sonic media should be treated with the same respect

Sonic characters acting immature shouldn't be a big deal. They are kids, no matter how many times you point out how they removed the ages at the Sonic Channel site. Amy Rose herself was at her best when she was an immature hotheaded girl

As much as I wish Silver was more serious at IDW, him acting excited and happy isn't bad either. He's healing from multiple broken futures

Silver and Blaze are better staying out as platonic. If Sonic and Shadow's tanabata references can be seen as platonic, then those two can two. That said, their relationship should still be seen as meaningful to both of them (perhaps more to Silver than to Blaze). Male and female friendships exist without it being instantly romantic

MORE. UNSEEN. CHARACTER. INTERACTIONS. PLEASE

Sonic Shuffle shouldn't be shafted just because of the weird gameplay and human-like characters. The Maginaryworld characters should make a comeback (ESPECIALLY with to the implications of the angel statue in Sonic CD's Wacky Workbench)

We need more truly irredeemable female villains (Surge doesn't count, I'm talking about characters like Witchcart, Lien-Da, Thunderbolt)

For the love of God, Sega. Bring Classic characters back

If you can give personality to Metal Sonic and Mecha Sonic II, you can give to the other robots (and no, making Tails Doll an eldritch horror doesn't count)

Hyper Sonic should come back. Maybe even make it the "third stage" to the Super Sonic and Super Sonic 2 duo

As good and amazing as Amy's everything was in Sonic the Comic, that shouldn't be the blueprint of her canon character. At max bring back her crossbow (and her girlfriend)

Tails Adventure is better taking place before Sonic and Tails meeting. If he was confident enough to follow Sonic and help him defeat Eggman's ass he should be confident enough to abolish the monarchy (last part is /hj lmao)

Tails Adventure mentioned, the Kukku Empire should make a comeback too. If Shadow can come back the Kukkus can. They weren't cntrl+alt+del from existence like Mephiles was y'know

Mega Headcanon post

Just a big ol post of Sonic headcanons in my personal AU. It might be fun, or it might be lame. You can be the judge. ^^ I'll stick with Team Sonic for now

Sonic

Sonic in my AU has quirks from most versions of Sonic. He's got the floof, extra spiky quills, and the Scarf of boom Sonic. He mostly follows a story similarly to classic/modern Sonic. And he values family and friendship like Movie Sonic. He also tries to set a good example for those younger than him, despite his thrill seeking nature, oddly enough like AoStH Sonic.

The lengths he will go to ensure all his friends are safe is insane. It doesn't matter who it is, but if anyone even remotely close to Sonic is threatened, he is quite literally the first to act, be it Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Big, Elise... anyone.

An Asexual Panromantic. He's big into cuddles, but flirting either goes right over his head or doesn't intrest him much.

Species means nothing on mobius considering they're all bipedal and intelligent humanoids. So Sonic would like to kindly ask you all to stop making fun of the bond he and Elise developed in 06, it's getting old.

Sonic is actually a surprisingly competent cook... and very knowledgeable about the nutritional value and calorie content of most foods. Which comes in handy considering many of his friends don't burn calories as fast as he does.

Only those Majorly involved in the events of 06 remember what happened before reality was altered, so sometimes Sonic will visit Elise in Soleana to check up on her. She's finally able to love a more comfortable life without a big fire monster trapped inside her.

Sonic was 15 years old in the Classic era, in my AU he's currently in his Twenties.

Tails

Tails obviously tinkers and works with machines in his spare time... but he also likes to try developing video games. Sonic loved to play test them.

Tails is secretly friends with his Robotic Rival Tails doll. And sometimes they seem to forget they're rivals.

Tails has... So many crushes. He's a pansexual disaster but doesn't know it yet. This does include Zowie and Cosmo yes, but also some other characters from other series considering I cross over my favorite AUs and fandoms quite a bit.

Tails in my AU is currently fifteen years old.

He does like to chase his tails from time to time, but only when he thinks no one is looking... He is not aware Sonic and Amy know.

He sings what he's listening to when he has ear buds in. Which is embarrassing when he's unironicly listening to meme music.

Tails had tried many times to revive Gamma, but has been unsuccessful... still, having an E-series robot to study makes maintaining and Repairing Omega much easier.

Tails has converted an old Motobug engine into an energy efficient engine for the Tornado, but instead of animals it's powered by rings.

Knuckles

He does still hate big crowds on his island, but doesn't mind having friends over in small parties or one on one.

He has a hat he really likes, but it keeps falling off while gliding long distances so he can't bring it on adventures as much as he'd like.

The hat falls off because his dreadlocks fan out like wings for gliding, and thus lift the hat up enough to push it off or let it get caught by a breeze. Using the string makes the hat slow him down like a weird parachute.

He and Rouge have made a silent agreement to pool their treasure together since the military occasionally tries to take it from her despite her services. They don't invade Angel island, so it's safe there. Not to mention it's now on the same island as the Master emerald, and thus she has no reason to take the Master emerald from the island now.

Now though, she makes jokes about them practically being Married due to how their relationship has changed.

Knuckles has many tribal warrior tattoos and markings in the AU, but they can seem a little messy... He's the last of his kind so he had to paint them himself.

Knuckles does now venture off the island more often than he used to... He still has a weird time in cities, but so long as Tails or Sonic are around to keep him out of trouble he can manage.

He likes to taste different fruit sodas to critique how close to the real fruit they taste like. He's really picky with grape soda in particular since Grapes are his favorite fruit.

His age in the AU is also in his twenties. He's only a year older than Sonic.

Amy and Sonic had to help him learn to read English, but in return he taught Amy and Sonic how to easily decode and translate ancient languages for themselves. Being a treasure hunter himself, he knows a thing or two about the history of Mobius.

A Look At Stuff You Probably Never Heard Of: Archie Sonic Online

I meant to work on this sooner, but I’ve been both distracted and exhausted. But better late than never, I suppose. Today, we’ll be taking a look at... Archie Sonic Online!

Archie Sonic Online is an online webseries that functions similarly to Sonic the Comic Online, both being online continuations of Sonic the Hedgehog comics. However, Archie Sonic Online, rather than continuing where the official Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics ended, with being set in an entirely new continuity, Archie Sonic Online continues the story from the original continuity.

Technically, Archie Sonic Online was started on September 2015 where it was known as Sonic Mobius and aimed to adapt the the “Lost Hedgehog Tales”, a series of ideas written by Archie Sonic writer, Ian Flynn, but wasn’t able to use for various reasons. The project itself would be set after Issue 247, disregarding the crossover event with Archie Mega Man. However, the project would officially be known as Archie Sonic Online on February 1st, 2016 and abandoned adapting the “Lost Hedgehog Tales” and instead decided to continue the original story.

As stated before, the online comic series takes place right after the last main issue before the reboot. For a refresher, Princess Sally has been turned into Mecha Sally and used to fight against Sonic and the Freedom Fighters. Eggman launches an attack on New Mobotropolis while Sonic and the others deal with Mecha Sally, only to receive help from Silver, who once again returned from the future to track down the traitor that would lead to the destruction of the future; that traitor being Sally (albeit not of her own free will). He manages to short Mecha Sally out, allowing Sonic, Tails, and Amy to focus on the Death Egg Mk. 2.

At the same time, the Tails Doll is attacking New Mobotropolis, leading the newly formed Team Freedom (comprised of Rotor, Cream, Heavy and Bomb, and Big) to fight the creature, which had also taken out the city’s defenses.

It’s also worth noting that these issues are worked on by different people. And due to it being a non-profit project that’s still in its early states, new issues are very few and far between. Not to mention the art styles can largely vary from issue to issue.

Once again, the time has come for the Final Recommendation Never Let Go Of It||Get It||Hold Onto It||Try It||Consider It||Stay Away From It

This comic series is still in its early issues, so as stated before, updates are largely infrequent and there can be some odd, albeit minor quirks within some of the panels. And some of the dialogue can be read somewhat awkwardly at times. 

However, despite the minor issues, the passion is still there, trying to continue where the original Archie Sonic comics left off and finish the plotlines that were left unresolved when the official comics got rebooted.

I also want to mention that Archie Sonic Online does more than the mainline Sonic the Hedgehog series, but also Sonic Universe. They also did a very short-live Mobius Legends series, which are simply one-shot stories that have no affect on continuity or the larger story. In fact, the image above with Princess Elise and Blaze are from the Mobius Legends series.

Not to mention they’re also adapting the rewriting the Endangered Species arc. In the original comic, the story ended with Thrash the (Tasmanian) Devil throwing the Echidnas within Albion, both the citizens and Dark Egg Legionnaires into a Warp Ring to an unknown location, thus leaving Knuckles and a small handful of Echidnas left on Mobius.

All-in-all, I say to check it out, especially if you were a fan of the original Archie Sonic series. And while writing this post, I learned they also have the entire Archie Sonic series uploaded to their website. Not just the mainline Sonic and Sonic Universe series, but also the Knuckles the Echidna series, and even the Sonic Boom and Sonic X series.
