Progress Report - 4/29/24

hello and happy birthday!

...is how this was going to start when I intended to post it this past Friday. But I spent my birthday as a side character in the hit 1996 movie Twister. By which I mean there was a really big tornadoful storm here, the likes of which I've never seen before. It's never a fun time when the words "historic" and "record-breaking" are involved.

But anyway! My birthday was a few days ago, and to celebrate I have a slightly belated gift for all of you!

A release date

That's right, we're back in business here in Speakerland 😁 I'm so relieved to finally return to some semblance of normalcy, and I'm very hopeful that I'll be able to get back to doing regular monthly updates again.

As for this one, the update will be going up on Patreon TONIGHT! I'll be uploading that momentarily, in fact. That means that, barring any strange game-breaking bugs or overly tangled code, the update will be out for public release on Tuesday, May 7th!

I just want to thank everyone one more time for your patience, and for all the messages of support 💙 it really does mean the world to me.

Very depressing and frankly infuriating numbers, but therefore all the more important to bring attention to.

Another thing I want to bring attention to is this comment by u/junvely which I think everyone but especially non-Sylus mains should take a good hard look at.

Just like they say, this will eventually come to affect us all, not just the Sylus (and now soon also the Caleb) mains. That's why it's important to be vocal about this and do what we can now.

One thing I truly adore about Palia is the polyamory and general queerness. It's so nice that we can romance everyone so we don't miss any plots or items, but also its nice as a poly-queer person to see some representation in a game.

There is no jealousy. There is no hateful or painful breakups (as I understand it, if you break-up it is not mentioned and you restart the romance plot-line). No one makes negative comments about two pins or switching out pins.

It's so nice to see positive rep in a game and honestly such a breath of fresh air.

I could've had a normal, more socially acceptable interest but my brain decided in 2020 that Obey Me was what it was going to flash before my eyes as a core memory when I die and it's been locked in ever since. I'm afraid that six of my last seven minutes of brain activity will be Obey Me.

And I remember from the last time I looked at the wiki that this is an item that Kyoko LOVES, because of COURSE it is!

Do you think sometimes when the team has a movie night, when they watch those 60's action war movies like "Von Ryan's Express" and "Battle of the Bulge" or spaghetti westerns like "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and "Death Rides on a Horse," Soldier pauses during or right after fight scenes or duels or whatever to obsessively overanalyze them. Like, he'll try and turn them into strategies to use on the job, takes, uhm, 'notes', (tactical doodles,) sets up nerdy models using a whiteboard map and improvised figurines, uses these examples when he does those psyche-up pre-battle speeches or during strategy meetings.

'Cause I bet he does, I bet he does that, and it completely kills the momentum of the movie to the point where the rest of the team gets disinterested and slowly leaves him behind to do their own thing.

I genuinely bet Engie wouldn't though, nah, I bet he's enough of a patient kind of gentle kind of man willing to stick through these pauses 'cause he's just that into the movie. And maybe he's just a teeny bit into Soldier's dissections of actiony chaos. Maybe gleans a bit of an understanding of Soldier's thinking that way. Admires the guy's passion about his 'research,' how thoughtfully he gathers details in an effort to help the team. Starts mixing in tapes for these sorts of movies more regularly to their movie night pool maybe subconsciously, maybe on purpose. The rest of the team doing their own movie night. losers.

do you think arranging the little veilguard tableaus of npcs standing around together was fun. I think it would be fun. I would make up soooo many dumb intricate little stories for all of them while I was placing them around the map and no one playing the game would ever know about it. but I'd know. I'd know their stories

It's a little weird to me when people automatically assume I would like a game just because it has romance in it or if it has conventionally attractive characters.

Like sure I joke a lot about being thirsty for characters or for playing certain games because a character interests me but the crucial thing is that the character/romance has to interest me!!

friendship test has like two main romantic relationships and one gay aro relationship. then there is a bunch of NPCs that are also in romantic relationships and in qprs. what i'm trying to say is that focus on those if you care about shipping and not on the obvious non-partnerning aro characters, which there are plenty of. Can't stop shipping or whatever but i can say that canonically that ship would never happen :)
