TV SHOW REVIEW: American Vandal

★★★★★ - 5 stars

"Sometimes, the truth is more complicated than a simple yes or no."

American Vandal: a mockumentary series on absurd yet serious crimes; a satirical depiction of true crime.

The first season weaves a mystery of 'Who Drew The Dicks' as it explores the story of Dylan Maxwell, unreasonably accused of vandalising 27 teachers' cars and expelled as an undebatable form of retribution. Dylan's story, while hilarious and crude, is told amazingly well through the use of interviews, 3D graphics, and raw footage from phone screens. It's a perfect enactment of what a documentary would be like if it was made by two high schoolers (the characters of Peter and Sam, who are played outstandingly well by Tyler Alvarez and Griffin Gluck).

Season two takes a different approach. Where season one is set in Peter and Sam's own high school - Hanover High, season two moves away from their home setting to Catholic school St Bernadine. It follows the aftermath of three faeces-related crimes committed by an anonymous person dubbed 'The Turd Burglar'. Moral ambiguity and cruel pranks (much like in season one) meets an important message about online presence - a message that differs from the one we've heard before.

The brilliance of this show lies in its ability to completely capture your attention through its unique take on a docu-series, and the way in which it allows your imagination to run wild with theories. It has you sitting on the edge of your seat, beckoning to know the truth behind the mysteries and questioning everything you thought you knew with more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel. With witty writing and hilarious plotlines, American Vandal is definitely one to add to your watchlist if you are in need of an entertaining show to binge-watch.

been rewatching american vandal to cope with the horrors and i still think it's one of the best portrayals of teenagers i've seen to date. like not only the casting choices but the dreams and ambitions, the flaws, the talent, the humor, the growing pains, just the complexity as full people in all their beautiful, messy, embarrassing glory. please watch this earnest and wonderful show about dick graffiti and poop crimes

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS THE PROPAGANDA IS WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i actually watched american vandal before i watched d20 so when i was rewatching it and saw Lou i was like HUH

for anyone who doesn't know, american vandal is a comedy mockumentary series on netflix that's meant to parody true crime documentaries, but it instead focuses on a high school and a student who's wrongfully accused of a prank. Here's the trailer to get a sense of the vibe.

it's so funny but its SO good i feel like most shows can never accurately portray teenagers but this show GETS IT, social media and all, and it even touches on things like how the public school system unfairly judges students, plus the inherent moral complications that comes with true crime.

Also, Christa Carlyle is Kipperlilly. Love those blonde class presidents who constantly post about unfairness and inequality at school.

Ok, it time for me to complain about a Netflix show being canceled: American Vandal

If you haven’t watched, go do so. Like watch the entire thing before you decide how you feel. I’m serious.

Yes, the humor is kinda juvenile at times, but it is literally the most accurate thing I found that describes the gen z.

Most shows get it wrong. They play up the wrong things, misuse slang, even get the stereotypes wrong. AV doesn’t. Every character feels a real person. Like I found out a certain character did something, and was actually hurting for them. Like teared up and shit.

When it’s making a point, it makes it. Like not in the over the top way, like some shows/movies do. Where it’s a bit too on the nose. No, it feels like it’s sitting you down and telling you a hard truth.

If you don’t know what AV is, it’s a fake crime show, featuring many child actors that you might recognize from Disney channel or other places. I don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t say much more than that.

Go watch it. Seriously.
