people complaining that Israeli miku "looks like an average american" really show that they never been outside of the US. you guys know basic modern clothes exists almost everywhere else, right? you can find a person in a tshirt and jeans almost everywhere. a character being drawn in a tshirt and jeans instead of an ultra intricate handsewn traditional dress doesn't mean she's suddenly a "cultureless american" or whatever, other countries have these clothes too.
different countries are gonna have different trends and habits, what seems to you like a regular looking person, is gonna be for another a hyperspecific reference to a subculture. a character wearing an ace ring is gonna be read as a character with a regular black ring to a person who doesn't know ace culture, similarly, a character with a Bat Mitzvah necklace and a Cofix cup is gonna be read as a character with a regular necklace and a regular coffee cup by a non-Israeli. a character with shoresh sandals (which are extremely popular here) is gonna be read as a character with regular sandals (which are an average option) to a non-Israeli, a character wearing a כובע טמבל will look like she's wearing a regular hat, an Israeli tour guide will look like a regular tour guide, a center kid miku is gonna look like a regular emo, because they are all easily recognisable clothing choices, but only people with that extra bit of context are gonna get the reference.
and people do draw the more traditional clothing, but you just call them Jewish miku, because again, to us we can instantly recognise what makes the character Israeli, but for someone who has no familiarity with Israeli culture, this is just gonna look like an average Jewish miku, because her being an Israeli Jew isn't gonna make her all that much different from a diaspora jew.
idk I'm just tired of the "Israelis have no culture" argument, like bitch, you never even talked to an Israeli, ffs.

Hiii!!! What type of music do you think that ren, strade and lawrence would listen to??
ahhh that's a fun question!
ren 🦊
in short: girl music lol
he loves idol groups, j-pop and k-pop. the more cute girls the better!
he also loves vocaloid. miku is his favourite because he's a basic
he's also not at all above a taylor swift, a mitski, a girl in red, a caroline polachek. sad girls singing about their sad lives. he relates to that
when he's feeling especially angsty he might dip into sad boy emo music, but not often.
you know his ass listened to preacher's daughter by ethel cain and he cried for like three days about it. me too, buddy
law 🥀
law isn't so much a music listener as they are a sound listener
a lot of white and brown noise.
they tune their radio between channels and listen to the fuzz to go to sleep
when they do listen to music, it's either like. aggressive harsh noise or really delicate instrumental music. very little vocals, just something occupy their thoughts
they could be convinced by death grips, machine girl, harsh noise made by trans women
it has to be like a brutal assault on the senses for law to be into it though
strade 🔨
dad rock lmao
like he's kind of an old school 80s metal head. metallica, iron maiden, dio, he's all about that shit
sings along super embarrassingly to metal in the car or when he's working.
he gets super involved, drum solos on the steering wheel, headbanging, all of that
has a similar fondness for cringey american rock and country music. anything that gets him in the groove he's into
he's also maintained a fondness for german rock, techno, industrial from his berlin party boy phase but he doesn't keep that up to date with it
he's got a rammstein shirt in his closet. i see this in my mind's eye

On My Music Tastes, Organized in Approximate Order of “Weirdness”.
Super Normal
Some pop songs/rap. Not very much, especially for rap, but whatever. I do enjoy some Taylor Swift.
Classical. I do enjoy it. I am not remotely educated in it, but it is nice.
A Bit Niche but Normal
Epic music. Sometimes the same thing, maybe a sub genre. I need my music to have some energy. The day I learned there were entire bands focused on making music that plays during the epic battle scene of a movie was a great day.
Hymns/Chants. Not much to say on these. I do enjoy some, especially God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman, but they haven’t had a huge influence on my life.
You Still Haven’t Grown Out of That?
Nightcore/Dancey Trance EDM Stuff. Yeah, I still listen to that stuff. It’s actually most of what I listen to. See previous comment about needing energy from my music.
“Angstcore”. My personal name for the sub genre of nightcore where the nightcore process is applied to rock/emo songs. This has the effect of making any male(?) singer sound like a teenager, automatically enhancing the angst factor by at least 300%
Vocaloid. Yeah, I still listen (some) to this as well. I have no defense. Well, except for the fact that it was the first music I got into. Miku and Rin’s Promise was one of the first songs I ever enjoyed, and I think a lot of what drew me to it is what I still seek in music. Electronic sounds, high pitched voices, usually but not always female, a language I don’t understand, a moderately fast pace, though it’s slower than most of what I prefer. Yeah, I always have been musically retarded, to use the word it its most proper sense.
Maybe a Bit More Niche, Definitely a Weirder Community
Powermetal. Rock music but more intense and historical. Or to phrase it differently, rock music for white supremacists. IDK, that just seems to be a lot of the folks who listen to it. I’m a history nerd, okay! It’s good for weightlifting as well.
Bollywood. I’m not familiar with a huge variety of songs from this tradition, but I did used to sing Malhari from Bajirao Mastani when things were getting hot at the restaurant I used to work at. That’s the nice thing about being in the back of the house, you can do stuff like that.
Pretty Niche
Mongolian Throat Metal.  Metal, but featuring a traditional form of Mongolian singing. I just wanna say, there was at least one song in this genre that I enjoyed before The Hu came along. I liked it before it was cool. Yeah, mega hipster points.
Wait What??
Nasheeds. Islamic hymns. Only really odd in the context of an agnostic white American guy who has never lived in a remotely Muslim area, only ever had one Muslim friend, and doesn’t know any Arabic beyond insha’allah and shahada. In that context, rather odd. These hymns usually (but not always) come from a tradition of a cappella music. I don’t understand the full theological reasoning, but at various times and in various places, Islam has had issues with instrumental music. Nasheeds were then the permissible music. Trying to sing along with these was also the reasons that I said Shahada a great many times without realizing it’s significance. Sorry!
What the Hell Dude?
Politically Extreme Nasheeds Remixed Into Nightcore. And then maybe slowed down from there. Yeah, I have no real excuse for this, besides my infinite love for the oddness that the internet can produce. It is quite likely heretical, and plenty of people may find it an offensive idea. Again, my apologies.

On The Latest Edition of “Birthright”...
First off, our newest members of the army are as follows:
Bratty Pineapple
Hoshidan Jock Frat Boy™ w/ a Katana
Denim-haired Fashionista (who’s in love with Bratty Pineapple)
Kagero Sandiego
High Noon Lobster King™ (FINALLY!!! And we’re at C-support!)
Pharah (or Ana?) riding a large white bird
Nick Wilde
Moze (any of you ever watch Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide?)
Captain Marvel on a Wyvern
Been doing a bit of traveling as well, including...
Sailing westward, where I met some wizard that I can say is Junkrat with a jester hat. Pharah came to the rescue on her big fancy bird.
Visiting some city that looks like Paris with a fancy opera house (where Disney Princess™ performed her signature song).
Eloise liked the performance. Disney Villain King™ hates us all (and killed Wizard Junkrat).
Ventured to the hacienda pueblo town of Cheve (it kinda looks like a Southwestern American city), where I faced the Nohr High Mean Girl Posse™ consisting of Snooty Red-headed Miku, Emo Rocker on a Wyvern, and the Evil Princess Lavender.
Found Lobster King in disguise. His High Noon™ Katana can do some serious damage!
Captain Marvel joins the squad.
On a side mission, I found Moze, who survived a raid.
We’re off to Nohr now, where we had to face the fearsome and chilling terror of... Benny and Charlotte! (seriously those names make them sound like a suburban sitcom couple, and “Daniela” isn’t really helping in the villainous name department either)

Our Fave Music to Get you Through Lockdown #3
As we go into #lockdown number three, we at Lazy Oaf HQ have compiled a list of all our fave music ATM to help you get your dancing shoes on.
how i’m feeling now - Charli XCX
Charli XCX’s fourth studio album “how i’m feeling now” is an ode to what it means to be a creative in lockdown. Conceived, created and released over the summer of 2020, it came as a breath of fresh air to fans of XCX’s music in what was becoming an increasingly overwhelming time. First announced to fans over a zoom call (I mean seriously, can it GET much more 2020 than that?) how i’m feeling now is an incredibly intimate piece of work, created solely with the tools she had available to her at the time and collaborating with her fans rather than other big name musicians. Dripping in her own style and signature synths, this album is sure to keep you feeling like the baddest version of yourself, even if you’ve been wearing the same pair of sweats for a week.
Tumblr media
Isolation - Kali Uchis
Kali Uchis’ perfectly named album “Isolation”, although released in 2018..., is a beautiful mix of breezy groove and psychedelic. While you may have heard her music trending on Tiktok to aesthetic videos of pretty girls (if you haven’t heard After the Storm, where have you been?) Her music more importantly finds clever ways to lace politics into artwork with tracks such as Miami, where both herself and rapper BIA narrate from an immigrant's perspective of the American Dream. It’s silky vibe and longing undertones are perfect soundtracks to spending summer in your back garden sipping homemade martinis.
Tumblr media
Hot Pink - Doja Cat
Released in 2019 just before lockdown number 1, Doja Cat's album Hot Pink took the internet by storm with it’s catchy melodies and iconic explicits that became fan favourites for thirst trap instagram captions. You’ve probably seen at least someone bust out “the Say So dance” at some point over the year, becoming a viral sensation that got it played out over the radio for weeks, later followed by sister songs from the album Like That and Cyber Sex, along with a slightly more sensual Rules. If you’re looking for the perfect mix of feel good grooviness and not safe for work naughtiness, you’ll find it in Hot Pink.
Tumblr media
Daisy 2.0 - Ashnikko / Miku Hatsune
December release Daisy 2.0 is an incredible remix of Ashnikkos single Daisy.  Featuring Japanese avatar Hatsune Miku, the track presents the perfect balance between Ashnikkos punky bad bitch nature, and Miku’s hypnotic hyperpop essence. The song comes just before the release of Ashnikkos new mixtape Demi Devil, set to arrive mid February of this year. If you’re looking for your new “main character takes over the world” song, this is a fierce contender. Zip up your biggest platforms and put on your biggest falsies, Ashnikkos Daisy 2.0 is about to take you on the trip of a lifetime.
Tumblr media
Nightmare Vacation - Rico Nasty
Best described by Elly Watson of DIY, Rico Nasty’s Nightmare Vacation will “chew you up and spit you out, and you’ll love every minute of it”. Filled to the brim with attitude and empowerment, this album challenges the narrative of female rappers that has been created for them by the industry and pulls you in every wonderful direction it possibly can. From angry punk fuelled and emo rap inspired tracks like Smack a Bitch and Let it Out, to fun vibey hip hop and pop songs like Don’t Like Me and Loser, Rico Nasty will show you every inch of her artistic ability and make you feel like the coolest version of yourself you possibly can. Catchy lyrics filled with nostalgia will send you right back to your childhood (see if you can spot her mean girls reference) and make you want to rip out your old Juicy tracksuit and chunky sunglasses for sure, what better way to show up to your family zoom quiz right?

The Top 21 Artists to Watch in 2020
Tumblr media
Genres are dead, the best major label A&R in the industry is TikTok, and 2020 is poised to be one of the best years for music yet. It is a year bound to be defined by multi-hyphenates, crossover stars, and Internet-bred icons. So, without further ado, we present to you our list of acts set to make a splash this year. From bedroom-produced artists on the rise to virtual reality superstars, these are our top 21 artists to watch in 2020.
keshi
youtube
keshi has quietly been going under the radar for some time now, but all of that seems to be changing. 2019 saw the post-Soundcloud era artist transforming his impressive social media following and streaming numbers into a series of nigh-instantaneously sold-out shows. An intoxicating mixture of the emotional highs and lows imbued in R&B and lofi hip-hop, keshi is the connecting thread between the Soundcloud generation and bedroom daydreamers. Somber to a beautiful degree, keshi is without a doubt the real deal.
박혜진 park hye jin
youtube
Dreamlike house music. 박혜진 park hye jin’s hushed whispers, which drift between English and Korean, float across the dancefloor to create a club-ready experience quite unlike anything else out there. It is dance music designed to lose yourself in. Ethereal and introspective without ever getting its head lost fully in the clouds. 박혜진 park hye jin is ushering in a new wave of forward-thinking dance music, one lulling mediation at a time.
Alaina Castillo
youtube
Alaina Castillo is setting the stage to be the next Ariana Grande. In the span of a single year, Castillo has gone from posting covers on YouTube to cultivating a cult-like following. Give a single listen to the music and it makes perfect sense. The combination of her Latin roots and airy blend of pop and R&B results in a musical fixture whose spell you cannot escape. With her debut EP, antisocial butterfly, arriving as a high-point to send off 2019, 2020 marks the rise of Castillo.
Dayglow
youtube
If you were to put a soundtrack to the strung-together words of sun-soaked eternal joy, it would be Dayglow. The irresistible DIY artist illustrates his potential to be anti-pop’s next star in the span of his modest 10-track debut offering, Fuzzybrain. Writing, producing, and mixing the album on his own, it arrives as a direct reflection of its creator, and what is reflected is a nigh-perfect amalgamation of indie pop and indie rock. Dayglow is the antidote for dark pop, brimming with infectious bliss and hope.
REI AMI
youtube
REI AMI balances her multi-faceted approach with the precision of a well-seasoned artist. Brimming with carefree bravado at one moment. Meditative, self-reflective, and wearing her heart on her sleeve at the next. And yet, the juxtaposition between her fiery persona and her somber, sentimental bedroom pop side feels all too natural. Maybe that begins to explain why REI AMI is already earning widespread acclaim and co-signs from the likes of Billie Eilish and FINNEAS.
Channel Tres
youtube
Channel Tres’ music is undeniable. Bridging Detroit house and the bravado of West Coast rap, the Los Angeles-based producer, singer, and artist creates music with an inescapable groove. Each and every one of his tracks are perfectly apt for driving down PCH with the top down or arriving as the perfect hit of adrenaline you need to get you through those final moments of that six-hour warehouse party. With his infectious production and buttery smooth voice, Channel Tres is emerging as underground dance music’s next star.
Tate McRae
youtube
Tate McRae may only be 16, but she is already being touted as pop’s next prodigy. The Canadian-born artist makes emotive pop mediations that explore the power of understated production. It is a deft approach that has seen her earn fans and collaborators in the likes of Billie Eilish and FINNEAS, as well as earn her millions upon millions of fans in spite of having yet to release a full-length project or even an EP. Pop stars are getting younger and more talented by the day, and McRae is next in line.
Jean Dawson
youtube
Jean Dawson defies classification or expectation. Self-described as the Los Angeles-based project of a boy exploring identity, intimacy, and escapism, the one thing you can expect from Dawson is for no two tracks to sound quite the same. The varied soundscapes he whisks into existence unfurl and evolve to tell enthralling portraits of chaos, fear, and dreamlike bliss. Dawson is an artist not to be slept on come 2020.
Junior Varsity
View this post on Instagram
A F$*KING WEEKEND LA. WHO WAS THERE?
A post shared by @ juniorvarsity on Sep 23, 2019 at 9:18am PDT
Junior Varsity is the only artist on this list who has yet to release music, and yet, the hype surrounding the Los Angeles-based duo is palpable. With no demos, B-sides, or even tracks on SoundCloud – their only music available for human consumptions appears as background audio for a few Instagram videos – Junior Varsity is already attracting major label attention and planning shows in Japan. So, is it all hype for the sake of hype? Well, “A F$*KING WEEKEND,” a series of pop-up ragers masquerading as DIY shows in LA and NY that has attracted audiences solely by word of mouth says otherwise.
binki
youtube
You cannot help but root for binki. Inspired the varying sounds of indie pop, indie rock, funk, and hip-hop, the North Carolina artist’s music plays out with an ineffable charm. Unexpected guitar solos, straight out dance-invoking jams, and lighthearted songwriting begin to inform the multi-colored world of binki. And with only a handful of singles to his name thus far, 2020 is bound to see that world evolve and flourish.
Baby Keem
youtube
Hykeem “Baby Keem” Carter is set to be hip-hop’s 2020 breakout rap star. Finding fans in BROCKHAMPTON and Kendrick Lamar, the Las Vegas native left 2019 with an acclaimed mixtape and breakout single. “Orange Soda,” which appears on his sophomore mixtape DIE FOR MY BITCH, quickly became a fan-favorite but is only a sliver of the artistic range that Baby Keem has to offer. Flowing fluidly between trap and melodic rap, Baby Keem is nothing if not a vibe.
Peach Tree Rascals
youtube
DIY Bay Area collective Peach Tree Rascals is the brilliant byproduct of a generation that has done away with genres. A joyous fusion of alt-jazz, funk, pop, hip-hop, and R&B, listening to Peach Tree Rascals is akin to strolling through a kaleidoscopic dreamscape with multi-colored flowers blooming at each and every turn. The project is entirely self-funded and is comprised of primarily second-generation Americans, whose parents immigrated from Mexico, Palestine, and the Philippines. The creative American dream is alive and well in Peach Tree Rascal’s inventive sound.
Gracie Abrams
youtube
At the time of writing this, Gracie Abrams has only two singles to date. And yet, those soft-spoken moments of introspection are more than enough to land her on this list. Inspired by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Abrams considers herself a songwriter first and foremost, and what a songwriter she is. Simple, nuanced, and striking. Her stripped-back soundscapes allow space for her innate gift for lyricism to shine. The 20-year-old artist’s diary-like confessionals speak to an intimate and universal appeal.
Aries
youtube
For anyone who has been following us for quite some time, it may come as no surprise to find this 2019 favorite of ours on this list. Aries has steadily been growing an avid following online with both his inventive reimaginings and original music, but, from a sold-out tour to festival debuts, it was the past year that really saw this Internet-bred artist hitting his stride. His unique fusion of late-stage emo and hip-hop accentuated by Beach Boys–evoking instrumentation is a trip you will not regret taking.
Winona Oak
youtube
Born and raised in the Nordic forests of Sweden, Winona Oak is a fittingly ethereal and enchanting songstress. Her vocal range is impossible to ignore and a single listen is nigh guaranteed to get you hooked on her heavenly highs and brooding lows. Nothing short of beautifully haunting, her succinct but growing discography paints a portrait of captivating melancholy. Kicking off 2020 with an impressive debut EP, it is a safe assumption to say that Oak is a name you will be hearing a lot more of and from in the coming decade.
Ashnikko
youtube
Very few artists can turn TikTok fame into lasting success. Ashnikko is looking to be one of those rare artists. Finding viral fame in “STUPID,” Ashnikko’s in your face brand of hip-hop is as raucous as it is rapturous. Her 2019 EP, Hi, It’s Me, serves as an impeccable introduction to the transfixing world of the Internet personality. Speaking of, it certainly doesn’t hurt that she is practically a one-person marketing team. From having her grandparents react to her music videos to taking Latvia by storm, Ashnikko is a brilliant example of the promise of Internet-era stars.
Stephanie Poetri
youtube
Stephani Poetri is the latest 88rising signee to find herself with a viral hit. The Jakarta, Indonesia–born singer and songwriter has a natural talent for feel-great storytelling transposed into lovely melodies. It is a gift she channels in full on her breakout hit “I Love You 3000” and the subsequent Jackson Wang-assisted “I Love You 3000 II.” But do not be mistaken. Poetri is no mere passing viral fad; she is a genuine storyteller set to make waves in 2020.
Miquela
youtube
For better or worse, the world is more digital than ever before, and Miquela is looking to be the world’s first virtually-crated pop star (sorry, Hatsune Miku!). The digital avatar Instagram influencer with dreams of pop stardom first began releasing music in 2017, but the latter half of 2019 saw her not only release a series of singles but a music video and official Lauv remix as well. More than just an uncanny valley or interesting gimmick, Miquela’s series of 2019 releases show the undeniable promise of a virtual pop star.
Celeste
youtube
An artist like Celeste only comes around once in a lifetime. Born in the US and raised in the UK, Celeste’s soaring and confessional approach to soul calls to mind the likes of Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald. Celeste’s music does more than stop you dead in your tracks; it entrances you. It transports you to an entirely different moment in time. Celeste is the sound of ‘50s soul, 2020 R&B, and beyond.
Monsune
youtube
Monsune drips with an electronic-infused soul. Seemingly equally as inspired by his contemporaries as he is by his predecessors, the notes of Toro Y Moi, Childish Gambino, J Dilla, and Prince are apparent, but the way the Toronto-based artist weaves together his expanse of influences is distinctively Monsune. His 2019 EP Tradition arrived as an introspective offering, exploring themes of diaspora, uncertainty, infatuation, and a host of other feelings that accompany the shift from adolescence to adulthood.
LoveLeo
youtube
LoveLeo may only have one single to his name, but it certainly left enough of an impression to land him on this list. His debut single, and in turn viral hit, “BOYFREN” topped both Spotify’s US and Global Viral charts. Released via GODMODE, the indie development label that brought us Yaeji, Channel Tres, and more, LoveLeo is poised to be more than just a flash in the pan moment of success. Bedroom-produced, infectious artist LoveLeo is here to stay.

Blog No. 1
June 26 - July 1
Hi, I’m Lily. I’m gonna blog to keep myself busy because I have a bad habit of moping around if I don’t stay busy. I’m hoping I can make this a weekly ritual where I’ll sit down on a Sunday afternoon (oops its Monday) and write this whole blog post out and it’ll be a fun outlet.
I wanna start with talking about anything new or exciting that happened in the past week. Like, what’s good? Or what am I currently obsessed with?
I started training for a new position at one of my jobs, and for this position, I have to wear all black. That’s totally not a problem at all because I’m actually obsessed with goth fashion right now. I’ve been wanting to dress head to toe in black, fishnets, buckles, and spikes. Probably doesn’t help that I’ve mostly been listening to metal and somehow old emo music has found it’s way back into my life. It’s like I’m reverting back to awkward emo junior high me, except it’s better because I wear better makeup and cuter clothes.
Speaking of makeup, though, I’m really into this firey red makeup trend that’s been going around lately! I love the red eyeshadow that came in my Feline Fancy Sugarpill palette that I’ve had since Valentine’s Day. I’ve been using that a lot lately. My sister has been letting me borrow her Kylee Jenner burgundy palette. Right when I officially fell in love with that one, I saw that Urban Decay has released a Naked Heat palette! The shades are fire (shameless pun intended). I’m super tempted to buy the Naked Heat palette to see how it compares to the Kylee burgundy one. I kinda feel like I might like the Urban Decay one more because it has more shades in it.
One of my all time favorite things to do is stay up really late, listen to music, and draw. I usually don’t have the chance to do that because I’m either too tired or I have to be up early the next day; but Monday night I was able to! It was super refreshing! I recently bought a Wacom drawing tablet, and since I’ve never drawn with a tablet before, I’m super shaky and sloppy with it. Monday, I practiced with it and I was getting super demoralized. Then I remembered this project I had in mind where I recreate this sloppy sketch of Rolling Girl Hatsune Miku in photoshop and surround the black and white sketch with teal. Black on white sketch with teal background. Yeah. I started pretty late Monday night, and didn’t get to bed until about 2 in the morning, but I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out! I posted her on my Instagram (OishiiZombie), and she’s also my cellphone lock screen. The last thing I wanted to do was get her and a couple other digital works printed out, so I guess I’ll have to see how that goes.
My boyfriend and I are almost finished watching American Gods, and I really wanna read the book after I finish reading A Clash of Kings. I’m also super excited for the new Game of Thrones season!! Also medieval fantasy, I’m hooked on playing Elder Scrolls Online. Whenever I’m not working or doing art projects, I’m plopped in front of our Xbox playing ESO. Maybe I’ll go see if the boyfriend will give me a turn when he’s done playing. ;P
Hopefullly that’s a good start for my weekly blog!
Seeee ya later!
