WIP Wednesday

This from chapter two which I was working on today! Trying to slowly chip away at Steelheart the best I can ;; I wasn’t formally tagged by anybody lmao so I think I’ll leave it up to y’all whether or not you want to share <3

This features a tiny flashback

Breakfast, however, made her think of dad and the last day she saw him.

He’d started working long hours at the clinic with Jonas so long ago that it had stopped being strange when he got home late, if he got home at all. It wasn’t unusual for him to spend the night there surrounded by paperwork and a glass of whiskey. Sure, Amy was angry. The Overseer, amongst many, had made it very clear to her that she was expected to marry and start her own family in a few years. Despite that fact, her dad had made Leo almost entirely her responsibility. He’d seemed to have forgotten that she had a job of her own to do. But, it wasn’t easy to yell at someone who wasn’t even there.

That’s why it was strange to wake up to the smell of sizzling fat and freshly brewed chicory coffee wafting in from the kitchen.

She shuffled out of bed and out of her and Leo’s shared bedroom to see what her little brother was cooking up, and was surprised by her dad instead. Usually, she was the first one up, but last night had been an especially late one. Mercifully, her body had let her sleep-in, and so did her family. 

She thought it was weird at the time, but how was she supposed to know?

James was humming a tune, frying cram and rehydrated eggs on the skillet. The kitchen wasn’t big, it hadn’t been built to do anything more than entertain people, but it was enough for three people. A glass of water with a packet of orange juice mix waited on the “just enough for three people” sized dining table. Leo was sitting in front of the TV, stirring apple juice powder into his water, wrapped up in an episode of The Adventures of Captain Cosmos. She recognized which episode it was from the dialogue alone. 

It was… “normal”.

James smiled and gestured towards the dining table, “Good Morning sleepyhead! I hope you don’t mind, I let you sleep in. Leo told me you had a late night at the shop.”

She stiffened, but tried not to look guilty, “Uh, yeah. Had a consultation go really late.” 

If Leo had told James anything more, he didn’t mention it, instead he said, “Would you mind setting the table? Breakfast is almost ready.”

“Oh. Yeah, sure.”

He looked over his shoulder back to Leo, “You as well. I don’t want the TV on while we’re having breakfast.”

Leo looked sorrowfully between James and the TV screen, “But it just got to the good part! Captain Cosmos is about to go up against the rival crew from the federation so that way they can get the quantum-”

“And I know you’re seen this episode at least a dozen other times. I’m sure it’ll be on again next week. Now help your sister.” James’ tone was stern, but not lacking in warmth. Amy wasn’t sure if Leo had ever gotten anything more than that, and she knew that it wasn’t going to happen today.

As predicted, Leo gave in with a solemn sigh, “Yes, sir,” and turned off the TV. 

She handed off the plates to him after he moped dutifully over, “So what’s the occasion? Did the Overseer give you a raise or something?” Coffee was an expensive ration that only got more expensive the more people used it up. To call it a splurge was an understatement. 

James chuckled at her joke, “Hah, no. No, I…” He paused and flipped over the slice of spam, “I suppose I wanted to spend the day with you two. It’s been a long time since we’ve spent time together as a family and I’ve missed you.” 

She’d nearly snapped at him. Nearly gave him the piece of her mind that was always waiting on the tip of her tongue, ‘Maybe you wouldn’t miss us if you were around,’ but she bit it back. Now wasn’t the time to start a fight. Not when he was trying.

He must’ve caught her expression anyway and smiled at her sadly, “Your temper’s gotten better.”

She shrugged, “Not as much to be angry about.”

It’d been a lie, and he’d known it, but he let it pass and they both moved on. 

Was there something he said she should’ve noticed? Should she have suspected that something else was up? Yeah, it was a change of pace, watching movies and playing board games all day, but no matter how she thought about it… it’d just felt like he was trying to get close again. Make up for lost time.

Maybe that’s exactly what it was.

HI!!! I am so so so so so glad you asked because if there's one thing i fucking love it's talking about Marlene McKinnon

Thank you for the excuse to talk about her i will now take you through everyone i think she was closet to.

I know a lot of people see her as part of The Marauders friendship group but personally I was never into that mostly because I don't head cannon Marlene to be a Gryffindor. To me she's Ravenclaw.

That being said I still see her as being friends with Peter, Sirius, Lily and Mary but not all at the same time. When it comes to Peter he's someone she's known since they were kids because Marlene is Irish and Peter had family in Ireland. He would visit them once every season and because they're the same age, Marlene and Peter were told to befriend each other and eventually they did. (if you've ever seen Up i imagine their first few meeting to be like when Carl met Ellie for the first time)

Sirius, Lily, and Mary, Marlene met while at Hogwarts and became friends with them there. She could NEVER handle Sirius and Peter together let alone them with James and Remus. One Marauder at a time was her limit.

Her best friend was Emmeline Vance, who was another Ravenclaw in her year and one of Marlenes roommates. They were platonic soulmates, sisters, ride or dies, basically the female version of James and Sirius but mature and better looking (their words not mine)

The other Ravenclaws in Marlenes year we're Kingsley Shacklebolt, Alexander Stebbins, Gilderoy Lockheart (i aged him up) Hestia Jones and Sybill Trelawney. Marlene was close with Kingsley, saw Gildeory as an annoying little brother, friendly with Alexander and Sybill and hated Hestia with all her heart.

Marlene grew up near the Bones family so she was also friends with Edgar and Amelia Bones growing up. They were both a year older then her and were sorted into Hufflepuff but they remained close. Marlenes favourite twin was Edgar because they would play Quidditch together

When Marlene started Hogwarts, Amelia told Pandora Ollivander to keep an eye on her (as Pandora was also a Ravenclaw) and through that Pandora became a good lighthouse for Marlene during her first few years.

Marlene also got on well with the majority of the Order. One in particular being Benjy Fenwick, who was a Slytherin in the year above her at Hogwarts. Benjys parents were Death Eaters and Benjy was supposed to be one too. When people in the Order had doubts about letting Benjy join surprisedly it was Marlene who stepped up and defended him despite them not having any sort of friendship before hand (other then Benjy being a good friend to Marlenes girlfriend Dorcas)

To me Marlene was never apart of a friendship group per say. She had many friends but her best friend and the person she spent the most time with was Emmeline. Marlene and Emmeline had each other and the rest of the world didn't need to exist when they were together. Of corse they had other friends and would often find themselves in some sort of group setting rather then alone but Marlene never felt the need for a secure group around her bevause z Emmeline was all she needed

three ships I like: not an easy question for me! I'm gonna go with some classics: Haruka x Michiru (Sailor Moon) Yoruichi x Uruhara or Yoruichi x Soifong (Had a very strong Bleach phase going on at age 14/15 or so) Amelia x Zelgadiss (love them Slayers) Vincent Valentine x Tifa Lockhart (FFVII). At that age it was enough for me to like both characters to see them together. They are both my favs from that game, specially Vincent. My boy Vincent. Sigh. That makes 4 in fact, apparently I only consume anime but I don't remember a recent time when I got invested in ships from media instead of ocs :') those ships are from my teenage era.

first ship ever: Mimi x Koshiro from Digimon was a BIG one to me, which made me write my first fanfic when I was about 11/12 years old lmao. I loved Digimon ok. I wouldn't say it was the 'first' but it was the first one I got absolutely crazy about when I was a kid.

last song you heard: Our Love Has No Goodbyes - The Kentucky Vampires (the rot is strong today??)

favorite childhood book: I loved Roald Dahl books, being "The Witches" my favorite! It was funny and kind of scary, but pretty enjoyable. "Lilli the Witch" was another series that I loved. Yes, I was all about witches since I was a small creature. I dont think it's coming up as a surprise!

currently reading: sadly I'm not reading anything at the moment, I should pick up the habit again... But one of the last books I tried to read was the Bell Jar from Sylvia Plath. I was liking it but got distracted, as always :')

currently watching: just finished Squid Game season 2. Didn't love it, but it wasn't that bad. The expectable for a middle season?

currently consuming: just had some granola with fruit and chocolate because a girl has to treat herself.

currently craving: I was craving noodles and ramen after spending some days watching videos about ranking different kinds of ramen... Now the craving has been satiated!

Susan Bones

Canon:

She was born around 1980

She's a Half-Blood. This means that either her father was a Pureblood (since her last name comes from his side) and her mother was a Half-Blood, or her mother was a pureblood and her father a half-blood, or both of them were half-bloods already.

Her wizarding family were rather powerful and respected during the First Wizarding War, but because of this most of her family were murdered by Death Eaters in the aftermath.

We don't know if her parents were murdered during this time, but the only relevant family of the Bones that is canon is Amelia Bones, Susan's aunt, but she was killed in July 1996

She was a Hufflepuff, in the same year as the golden trio.

She seemed to be friends with Seamus Finnigan and Hermione Granger, as Hermione and Susan were paired together for Herbology and DADA in their second year and both had a crush on Professor Lockhart during that time, although it's unknown if they were friends after that. She's also seen talking with Seamus during classes and DA meetings.

We do know she was good friends with the Hufflepufss in her year, Hannah Abbott, Ernie Macmillan, and Justin Flinch-Fletchley, all of who were also members of the DA. It's unknown if she was friends with Zacharias Smith, another Hufflepuff in her year, even though he did attend DA meetings.

In her sixth year, she splinched herself while attending Aparating classes, losing one of her legs, although it was later reattached.

She was a member of the DA Army, but it isn't known if she was present during the Battle of Hogwarts, although it is most likely since she did attend Hogwarts for her seventh year at that time.

It is also not confirmed in canon whether she survived the second wizarding war, although it is most likely since her name wasn't listed among the deceased.

We also don't know what she did in the aftermath of the war

Her parents were Oscar Bones (Half-blood) and Eleanor Bones (Pure-blood).

Her grandparents were Alfred (Pure-blood) and Dorthory (Muggle-born), and the parents of Oscar, Amelia and Edgar Bones. Edgar was the oldest, Amelia was the middle child, and Oscar was the youngest.

Her grandparents were nicknamed Alfie and Dottie

Since she was raised by muggles, Susan's grandmother grew up reading muggle literature, which she absolutely adored. She was the one to come up with the names for her two sons, who were named after Edgar Poe and Oscar Wilde, both muggle English poets

Her uncle, Edgar, had three kids with his wife, Edith (Pure-blood) Chester Bones (eldest) and two daughters, Theodora and Mabel, who all died in the war in 1981, shortly before Voldemort was finally defeated.

Edgar and Edith were both around 33 when they died, their son Chester was around 12, and Theodora and Mabel were around 10 and 8 respectively.

Her parents were murdered by Voldemort shortly after her 1st birthday in 1980, a year before the war ended. They were both around 24 years old.

Her aunt, Amelia Bones, one of the few surviving members of the Bones family, took Susan in just after Susan's parents' death and raised her as her own, she was about 28 at the time.

Susan would call Amelia aunty mum.

Although Amelia was quite busy with her Ministry work, she did try to spend as much time with Susan as possible.

Susan had lived in Godric's Hollow with her parents, along with her uncle Edgar, Aunt Edith and her cousins, although once Amelia became her guardian, she moved to Wimbourne. Her uncle and aunty stayed, as Edgar was working alongside the Order of the Phoenix and James and Lily Potter, fellow members, lived there as well, albeit secretly, and Edgar thought he should look out for the Potters.

The Abbot family also lived in Godric's Hollow and were close with the Bones family. They stayed at Godric's Hollow until Edgar and Edith Bones' deaths, and then they moved to Wimbourne to be with Amelia and Susan Bones.

Hannah Abbott and Susan would grow up together, and their two families would make the trip to King's Cross Station to see the girls leave for each of their years at Hogwarts.

Susan and Hannah were both obviously sorted into Hufflepuff.

Susan wasn't one to actually play quidditch, but she rooted for the Wimbourne Wasps.

She loved Herbology and the History of Magic, and eventually the extra-curricular subjects, Muggle Art and Wizarding Art.

You'd just constantly find her in the greenhouses working on her plants or sketching, drawing and painting. or pouring over history books from the library.

Susan and Hannah would become good friends with Ernie Macmillian and Justin Finch-Fletchley.

They were basically known as the Hufflepuff Four.

She developed a crush on Ernie in her second year

She was good friends with a few Gryffindors in her year, like Hermione Granger, Dean Thomas and Seamus Finnigan.

Dean was quite talented in art, although he didn't tell many people, and Susan was one of the few he'd show his artwork to.

Hermione and Susan would meet officially on the Hogwarts Express at the start of the second year, and the two loved discussing the book, History of Magic, both of them having read it thoroughly.

They were also paired in Herbology, DADA, and History of Magic, and you'd often see them giggling together.

Susan was the one to make Hermione open up very easily early on, which she wouldn't do around even her other close friends, Ron and Harry, until much later.

Susan was upset when Hermione was petrified during the second year, along with Justin.

She'd visit the Hospital Wing constantly, and took notes for classes for both Hermione and Justin.

Although they weren't necessarily close, Susan was an acquaintance of Harry through Hermione and was one of the few who didn't think that he was behind the attacks in the second year, and would tell Hannah and Ernie off when they were convinced he was.

And Susan was friends with Seamus through Dean and would confide in him about things, especially since his mother was also working at the ministry. Although, they'd get into a disagreement when Seamus didn't believe the trio about Voldemort.

During the third year, she'd pick Wizard and Muggle art, Muggle Studies and Music as her extra-curricular classes.

Hermione and she were in the same Muggle studies class, and they'd often study together, and discuss recommendations for muggle books and music.

She loved music class as well and played the harp.

Susan would be concerned for Hermione because she was aware Hermione was using the time-turner to take so many classes. Although, she did enjoy the story of Hermione punching Malfoy, and thought it was a good thing Hermione was letting loose.

Before the beginning of the fourth year, Susan's Auntie would get free tickets to the Quidditch World Cup because of her position in the ministry, and Susan would go along with Ernie, Justin and Hannah. She'd also run into a few of other her friends there, including Hermione, Seamus and Dean.

Although she was excited when Cedric was picked as Hogwarts Champion and thought that Harry should not have been allowed to enter the tournament, she didn't believe that Harry put his name in the goblet of fire. She supported both Harry & Cedric, and refused to participate in picking sides, unlike Ernie and Hannah. Justin was the same, as he learnt his lesson from 2nd year, realising that he shouldn't have judged without all the facts.

Susan stood by Hermione and didn't believe the rumours Rita Skeeter was making up about her. Susan was the only one who knew that Fred Weasley was Hermione's first kiss and not Victor Krum and that Hermione only viewed Krum as a friend.

Susan went to the Yule Ball with Zacharias Smith, mostly as friends though.

She was over the moon when she found out that Hermione and Fred were dating

Susan was saddened by Cedric's death. Although she was afraid, she did believe that Voldemort was back.

In her fifth year, she was upset when Ernie (who she still had a crush on) started dating Leanne, a Hufflepuff and friend of Katie Bell after they both joined the Hufflepuff Quidditch team to honour Cedric (who they had admired greatly) as a keeper and chaser respectively.

However, she started dating Zacharias Smith that same year. Zacharias was a Chaser on the Hufflepuff Team as well.

And Susan would read up on quidditch to support both her boyfriend and friend

Justin and she were also definitely the conspirators behind getting Neville Longbottom and Hannah together when they started noticing the two hanging out together a lot more.

Suan had previously been friends with Neville for a while, as they had been paired together for Herbology the year prior, but thought Hannah would be a good match for him.

She'd also joined Dumbledore's Army that year, and enjoyed the lessons., Susan was the one to convince her 4 Hufflepuff friends (Ernie, Zacharias, Hannah and Justin) to join.

However, this caused issues between Zacharias and her, the former being continuously sceptical of harry, Hermione and ron, and the return of Voldemort, whereas Susan believed it was true, and didn't like the comments her boyfriend would make towards her friends. After about 6 months of dating, the pair would split.

early history :

the only child born to isla and malcolm bones, susan was named for her aunt amelia's middle name. a rather powerful and respected family in the wizarding community, it's no shock that they were sought after by death eaters during the first wizarding world war. most of the family wouldn't survive.

first year :

susan bones started her education at hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry the same year as the famous harry potter. she shared a boat with seamus finnigan and hermione granger, and was the third student to be called upon by minerva mcgonagall for the sorting ceremony. there was an indescribable joy at being sorted into hufflepuff, the very house that her parents had shared before falling in love. the house that most of her family had called home while at hogwarts. during her first year, susan would learn all about the basics of magic and spell performance, like her other classmates. she was also present at the end-of-term feast during which gryffindor won the house cup breaking slytherin's seven year winning streak.

second year :

during her second year, susan seemed to develop a crush on the then defence against the dark arts professor, gilderoy lockhart, which caused her to be off-task daydreaming during his lessons. she participated in the duelling club, as a precaution due to the attacks that occurred after the chamber of secrets had been opened. the fact that lockhart oversaw this club was merely an added benefit, as was the discovery of a talent for duelling magic. if only she’d known how much that skill would come in handy in later years.

year two wasn’t all clubs and cute professors. when her friends were all petrified by the unknown creature (now known to be a basilisk) roaming the school, fear seemed hard to shake. for someone who had already faced so much loss, the thought that her friends’ lives were in peril was a hard one to shake. to say that she was filled with a sense of relief when professor sprout and madam pomfrey were able to cure the petrified students would be an understatement.

third year :

idk she was scared of sirius black like everyone else that year. i'll flesh this year out later maybe. maybe not. we'll see.

fourth year :

during susan's fourth year hogwarts held the triwizard tournament and hufflepuff's cedric diggory was one of the triwizard champions. she supported cedric in favor of harry, as he was in her house and her best friends were also strong supporters of him.

cedric's death at the end of the triwizard tournament left susan with a lot of questions, though of one thing she was certain. harry potter was no liar. voldemort was back, and it was only a matter of time before the rest of the wizarding world began to suspect the same.

summer before fifth year :

it was in late june that the death eaters who murdered susan’s uncle edgar and his family escaped from azkaban. news that immediately set the bones family on high alert, and for good reason. mid july saw an attack on the bones household, with susan left the only survivor. she’d credit it to pure luck and her mother’s forethought, if you could even get her to speak on the incident.

the following days saw her settling into a spare bedroom at her aunt’s home, her new home, and struggling to accept her new reality. still weeks later, the grief at her parents’ death feels as fresh as it was standing in the leaky cauldron. she only hopes this school year proves to be the distraction she so desperately craves.

Context: When I did my latest playthrough with Amy it was with Tale of Two Wastelands installed, which allows for hardcore mode! Essentially, survival, where you have to manage things like sleep! Which meant lots, and lots of Nuka Cola because it can help you to stay awake! Which means narratively there are consequences to that habit.

This is later into Steelheart (and may or may not work itself into the actual story), but I really wanted to write Amy content that wasn’t so early on lmao. This was upon request of my partner <3

Tags: a little angsty, but it ends with an apology and some reconcilliation. Amy has issues and her and Butch are still learning how to communicate

Amy kicked her shoes at the front door, ignored Butch’s comment about her being a slob, and dropped her pack unceremoniously to the side. Wadsworth greeted her with his trademark dry sarcasm, “Greetings, mum. Your return always means that I can finally get back to work”, and she started up the stairs.

It was routine to her now. All of it was. Go out, almost die saving some people, bicker with Butch on the way back, and try not to think too hard when he called it “home”. Wave to Stockholm, say hi to the Cantebury Commons trader of the day, politely decline giving them more caps, and cringe at the wailing screech of the front gates. Get stopped the moment she walks into town by everyone and their mole rat. Sell to Moira. Get caught up in something new. Help Walter and have to explain to him again, that no, no Leo isn’t going to come back and work here.

Finally get to go home.

Sure, it was home for her too when she didn’t think on it too hard. When it rolled off her lips and slipped into her thought without her realizing it and suddenly second guessing herself. For her, it was a mistake. A slip of the tongue. For Butch... she wouldn’t go as far as to call it intentional, because intentional would require him actually thinking and he didn’t like to do that if he didn’t have to.

She just didn’t like how easy it came to him. How all these little things seemed to not bother him when for her it all mattered so much. Why did it have to matter to her? Why couldn’t she be more like him?

Amy stopped at the top of the stairs, and without even thinking she was in front of the Nuka-Cola machine, her hand already half way into the icebox.

It was late. Time for bed kind of late. She could hear Butch yawning from downstairs and settling into the couch with their takeout from the Brass Lantern. She shouldn’t. She really shouldn’t, but she’d been baking in the sun all day and the cold frosty allure of the bottle was really hard to ignore.

Amy relaxed, it was fine. She wouldn’t stay up all night from drinking one. She drank them all the time still. She’d get enough sleep, just like she promised Leo.

It was fine.

“Hey Ames, you getting a nuka? Can I have one?”

She tensed, and felt the urge to kick him. To yell, and tell him to fuck off. It wasn’t fair. He wasn’t even being rude. He wasn’t trying to start a fight, but it was just another one of those little things. Little things that mattered only to her. Little things that never had a reason to bother him.

Like when he took Leo’s room. It was natural, she had the space. She wasn’t going to make him sleep on the couch and Leo wasn’t coming back, but it was his room and now Butch was sleeping in it.

Amy grabbed two and slammed the icebox closed.

“Yeah.”

If he gave her a look about her tone she didn’t see it. She didn’t look up as she descended back down, didn’t look when she handed him the bottle, and didn’t look when she grabbed her own dinner.

She didn’t want to sit on the couch and eat dinner with him right now, but if she didn’t then he’d definitely know something was up, and when Butch smelled blood he pounced. She really really wasn’t in the mood to get in a fight with him. So she sat, opened up her take out, cracked open the nuka-cola, and ate her dinner like a god damn adult. She wasn’t going to get in a stupid argument, over meaningless shit, that wasn’t even his fault.

Then Butch opened his fucking mouth.

“So you gonna tell me what I did to earn the cold shoulder, or is this going to turn into you yelling at me for something I didn’t even know I did?” If he said it in a way that she could take as charitable Amy couldn’t hear it over the sound of the blood marching in her ears.

Wadsworth announced loudly, “I think I shall go scrub down the bathroom again. Perhaps the Abraxo will work out the rust this time.”

Great, amazing. Fantastic. This was fine. Just play nice and make it boring for him to chew on. She said, with all of the tact she could muster, “Nothing’s wrong. I’m not giving you the cold shoulder.”

Butch rolled his eyes, “Bullshit. I know that you know that’s bullshit. If you got a problem just came out and say it. You’ve never saved my feelings before.”

Was he trying to piss her off? Was he trying to start a fight? What was the god damn motive? He saw her having an off moment and couldn’t read the room well enough to cut it out long enough for her to eat? She tried her hardest not to grit her teeth, or clench her jaw, but it was getting harder.

“I’m not saving your feelings. You haven’t done anything wrong.”

“Then what’s with the bad mood?”

“I’m trying to finish my dinner so I can go to bed. I’m tired, it’s been a long day, what else do you want from me?”

“You were fine earlier!” he said, raising his voice.

She threw her hands in the air, “Why do you care so much? You get paid, you get a home, you get to go on those ‘crazy cool’ wasteland adventures you were talking about, and you get your fucking nuka-cola! You don’t need to pretend you give a shit.”

There was a flash of something in those big blue eyes that he buried with a snarl just as quickly as he let it hover at the surface. He didn’t bother to veil the venom in his voice.

“So I’m just your bodyguard now? That’s it?”

There was a large part of her that wanted to up-the-ante, to fight back just like the old days in the vault where they were at each other’s throats. It was easier back then to throw her anger at someone so willing to take it, and he threw it right back at her just as mean and hard.

But it wasn’t the vault, and he wasn’t just the bully across the hall anymore. And she just... wasn’t angry enough anymore. She was just tired.

She thought about all the nights that they spent together past curfew working on the next big piece he wanted. Tossing ideas back and forth in the parlor until Officer Gomez sent them home. They’d keep talking on the way back and at breakfast the next day, and lunch after that. He’d save up all his credits just to get the chance to have her artwork on his body. Sure, he’d been very very particular, but she hadn’t felt that kind of synergy with someone... ever.

They were friends, and loathe as she’d been to admit at the time, they had been for a while.

Amy’s shoulders curled in, defeated, “No, no you’re not. You’re... you’re my friend.” The march steadied to a slow thud, “I-I’m sorry, Butch.”

It was quiet, and suddenly she was terrified that he’d had enough of her too. That he’d figured it out: she was all sorts of fucked up and broken and really not worth the trouble.

But then he leaned her shoulder against hers and mumbled, “Yeah, yeah, I know. I didn’t mean to make you say it.”

She cautioned a look at his face. His cheeks were a little red, probably from the fight, and he wasn’t really looking at her. He’d catch her from the corner of his eye and look away. Cute.

(Put that away. Don’t think about it.)

“So what’s wrong?”

She let out a heavy sigh and futzed with the bottle in her hand, “A lot of things. Lots of... little things. That don’t feel little. It... it really doesn’t matter. You really didn’t do anything.”

He frowned, little thoughts passing through his expression easy and unrefined, and she couldn’t help the little bubble of envy float to the top. She pushed back down. She liked him the way he was and she wasn’t going to ask him to be any other way.

Eventually, he leaned back into the couch and put his hands up in a truce, “Fine. You don’t wanna talk about it. Too chicken. I get it.”

She snorted and raised a brow, “Yeah? You’re dropping it?”

Butch stuffed a bite into his mouth, “Food’s getting cold.”

Amy shook her head and rolled her eyes, but relented as well. She knew it wasn’t the end of this, but for now she could eat some food and get some sleep.

besides the obvious stuff that happens in the books, I think the only thing that comes with a warning should be hints of a toxic/abusive home life btw snape in this is more based on the movies cause book Snape just sucks

The Malfoys and the blacks went shopping together, specifically for brooms. For the Nimbus 2001 wich phoebe and and Draco couldn't be happier about.

After all they both wanted to join the quidditch team. Now they're old enough and both their fathers agreed it is a good idea to get their children the best equipment available. ''Can't wait to tell the others'' Draco stated like a proud male peacock would when showing off its feathers.

''Actually, I think it be more fun to wait until we're at Hogwarts''

''What makes you say that?''

''Dray, we're getting Nimbus 2001. Imagine surprising the entire team with these and walking over school grounds while no one had a clue. Can you imagine how priceless everyone's face will be?''

Draco hummed with a nod as he imagined the scene smirking at the idea. ''You're right. It does sound more fun.''

The two kids could hear Narcissa chuckle softly at their plan. ''Always coming up with a clever plan you.''

The gentlewoman put some of Phoebe's hair out of her face while her goddaughter smiled a little. Narcissa was by far the most gentle one of their family.

''Tell me about it. Truly her father's child I suppose.''

Lucretia commented on her daughter who seems to grow every day more into her father's image while Alphard silently smirked.

Phoebe was also particularly excited for her defense against the dark arts this year since 1. With Quirrell gone, she hoped for more exciting lessons 2. Gilderoy Lockhart, a wizard famous for his adventures would be teaching them and since Phoebe read some of his books not that great but the stories were fun she thought the professor would be better...

Oh how wrong she was.

Phoebe still remembers raising an eyebrow at her new professor's overly smiling egotistical way of speaking about himself. Creep. The young girl thought but it wasn't until she saw the 'quiz questions' that she was absolutely baffled.

"What in Merlin's name is this???" The Slytherin girl asked no one in particular, as Amelia next to her simply looked at how Phoebe felt. When she looked around to look at her fellow classmates, especially her fellow snakes, they seemed just as baffled. When she made eye contact with two of her best friends, Draco and Theo, she immediately knew what they were thinking.

What sort of rubbish professor did we get this year???

Most of the girls on the other hand seemed less taken aback, clearly just blinded by their crush on the handsome man. Phoebe wasn't sure whether that was more stupid or disgusting and decided.

It was both.

Once the quiz was over things did NOT improve. It was the moment when a pixie managed to injure Phoebe's eye and pull on her silky long well-kept hair that Lockheart was a fraud. She grabbed her books off the table and smacked the pixie with it.

The room was filled with screams while Phoebe saw a some poor Gryffindor boy getting snatched by the ears and then hung from the chandelier along with who knows how many broken objects thrown across the room.

Amelia immediately dragged her best friend under the table along with her stuff. Neither girl had to say anything as everyone had the same thought. Once the bell rang everyone ran out of the class in the hopes of not get hanging by the chandelier and fall down the same way Longbottom did.

"This is unbelievable, pure rubbish!" Phoebe said trying to fix her hair, head still sore from the pixie pulling on it. "That man is clearly a fraud! What sort of git is Dumbledore hiring?!" Theo her rather slender short friend caught up with the girls and looked ready to hex the man into next year. "I swear Dumbledore is trying to make us fail."

Amelia sighed out. That sentiment was well shared among the snakes after Dumbledore awarded Gryffindor a million points at the feast last year making Slytherin lose the mere seconds when they were about to win. Only this time it wasn't just the Slytherins ego on the line.

Their grades genuinely were at risk if this is how the entire year will be. ''No.'' Phoebe spoke firm and determently. ''I refuse to fail simply because Dumbledore is an imbecile.''

And she huffed walking towards the dungeons with two best friends trailing behind her. Both curious about what she was planning.

Phoebe from that moment onward hated her new defense against the dark arts. She planned to send some of her books Lockheart wrote back home with a frustrated letter to her parents explaining what happened and that Lockheart might as well be a squib with how useless he seems to be.

'Dumbledore couldn't have hired a more incompetent person for the job if he tried. Honestly, a squib would be better because at least they wouldn't be stupid enough to release a cage full of pixies into the room when they have no means of stopping them. Which led to my black eye and nearly getting my hair pulled out of my head! Please tell this to the board.'

Was only part of what Phoebe wrote. Quickly finishing the letter hastily and pocketing it so she could send it home the next time she was at the owlery. ''Make sure to add how he couldn't even stop the pixies himself.'' Amelia said coldly.

Phoebe also made sure to inform Professor Snape aka her head of house first with her friends still following her. "Yes? Miss black?" The rather intimidating man asked. He was actually Phoebe's favorite staff member not just because she was clearly a favorite student of Snape but because the man was slightly comforting to her.

In the same vein her stern, cold father was but actually around instead of out of the house.

"Professor Snape. I know you probably don't want to hear my complaints about other professors but I can't pretend and ignore the obvious."

"It's Lockheart, isn't it?"

The man scowled while the Slytherin trio was surprised at how quickly their head of house gave in. "Yes, yes it's about Lockheart sir"

"I am. Not surprised."

Well... At least Phoebe didn't have to worry about a possible lecture for bad-mouthing a staff member. "In that case, I'm sure you understand why we rather receive lessons about defense against the dark arts from you, sir" Phoebe said trying to sound as polite as possible knowing Snape wouldn't refuse the offer.

Now that seems to catch Snape off guard and for the first time, Phoebe, Theo, and Amelia thought they saw a genuine smile from the cold man. Snape wanted the job for years after all and students of his willingly went out of their way to ask him for help instead of the actual D.A professor. How else could he take it but as a compliment?

"Of course, I know you're a very busy man but I had hoped maybe occasional lessons to ensure our grades don't slip"

Phoebe quickly added on playing up the star student act.

"Of course. I don't mind not for a diligent student like yourself. It is a waste if you fail merely because your professor is incompetent. Your friends are welcome as are any other Slytherin students who show effort."

Now that's why Phoebe's favorite professor is Snape. She often got special attention and praise for her hard work she rarely got from most especially her parents. She still remembers how the house elves had to heal her after Lucretia's anger was shown for the fact a mudblood had gotten better grades than Phoebe.

"Thank you professor"

The young girl beamed while her friends were pleasantly surpised.

''I swear you're his favorite'' Theo teasingly bumped his shoulder against Phoebe who simply wore it with pride as they walked thru the corridors. ''Clearly with good reason.'' The girl's dimples showed when she smirked with no shame. It brought out a certain family resemblance to her cousin.

Amelia rolled her eyes at her dormmate's shamelessness but she supposed Phoebe had earned some of the right to. ''At least you put it to some good use. Can you imagine if Granger is the only one of our year that actually passes?''

When the first quidditch practice came around her and Draco couldn't be more proud of the fact their family gotten them the best of the best brooms for the entire Slytherin team.

Walking proudly onto the pitch hidden among the taller and much older students. They saw the Gryffindors coming down, who originally booked the pitched first were simply handed a letter.

''I Professor S. Snape, give the Slytherin team permission to practice on the quidditch pitch today owing to their need to train their new seeker and chaser''

''A new seeker and chaser.'' Wood said rather distracted. ''Where?''

The 5 large figures moved out of the way letting Phoebe and Draco come in front of them. Both of them smirked, more than pleased with themselves. ''Aren't you Lucius Malfoy's son? And Alphard's black daughter?''

Fred asked with clear dislike.

''Funny you mention them,'' Phoebe said smirking with her dimples showing and proudly held her new broom in hand. ''Since me and Dray are on the team now they have gotten the entire team something, pretty nice.''

The entire team of green held out the newly polished handles and 7 sets of golden lettering spelling 'nimbus 2001' under the noses of the lions in the early morning sun.

''Lates model, came out just last month.'' Flint said carelessly and flicked a speck of dust from the handle. ''I believe it outstrips the old 2000 series by a considerable amount as for the clean sweeps.''

Looking over the twins who owned a pair of them. ''Sweeps the board with them.'' For a moment the usually loud lions were left silent.

''Oh look, more lions.'' Phoebe stated as she gestured to Ron and Hermione running towards them.

''What's happening? Why aren't you playing and what's he doing here?'' The ginger boy, Phoebe only met in passing said while he looked over Draco in his green and silver quidditch uniform. ''I'm the new seeker, Weasely.''

The thin blond stated so smugly that his eyes resembled slits. ''Everyone is just admiring the new brooms my father and uncle rad bought our team.''

Ron gapped open-mouth at the superb brooms. ''Good, aren't they? But perhaps the Gryffindor team will be able to raise some gold and get new brooms too. I expect a museum would bid for those clean sweep fives.'' The snakes snickered.

''At least no one in the Gryffindor team had to buy their way in,'' Hermione said sharply. ''They got in on pure talent.'' Phoebe scoffed at her, still smirking and stepped closer.

''Don't act like you know anything about flying, granger. You can't even raise a toe off the ground. 'Up, uP, Up'.'' Phoebe mimicked Hermione usual sharp voice and brash manners mockingly remembering their flying lessons from last year, making the rest of the snakes laugh again.

''Exactly, don't talk you filthy mudblood.'' Phoebe's eyes immediately widened, almost comically large at her cousin's words. Are you trying to die? Is was she wanted to ask, instead she grabbed Draco by the collar and pulled him back.

Flint dived in front of Draco so the weasely twins couldn't jump him, a Gryffindor girl shrieked ''How dare you?!'' and Ron immediately grabbed his wand yelling. ''You'll pay for that one Malfoy!''

Pointing his wand under Flint's arm. Phoebe saw for a split second the tape on the wand causing her to take multiple steps back before a loud bang echoed around the stadium along with the jet of green light that shot out the wand.

The wrong way, hitting Ron instead of Draco. It reeled him back onto the grass while the lions ran to checked on him.

Before every Slytherin started howling with laughter when the poor Gryffindor spit out a hand full of slugs. Phoebe leaned against her new broom, one hand covering her mouth while Draco banged his fist on the ground as he fell on all fours practically wheezing.

Once everyone's laughter died down the Slytherins took off flying on the pitch since Harry just left to help Ron.

The practice went over pretty well for Phoebe. Being a second year meant she didn't have the arm strength to throw the Quaffle as far as the other chasers but it made her movements more fluid and hold onto the quaffle more easily.

Determent to show how capable she is Phoebe throws the quaffle to Montague letting him attempt to score in one of the hoops only to kick the hard ball in the completely opposite direction. Catching the keeper completely off guard. Flint nodded pleasantly surprised at the tactic. ''Keep it up black.''

Phoebe smirked and winked at Draco. ''Told you I would be more useful than you.'' She flew up to practice the same move but punching it this time leaving her tin-skinned cousin huffing in irritation.

After practice was over Phoebe gladly went into the showers, having extra privacy as the only girl on the Slytherin team and afterward gladly told her best friends Theo and Amelia Flint about the practice.

Theo let out a bark of laughter at the story. ''Weasely really is as dumb as a troll. Who tries to dual with a broken wand?'' Phoebe simply shrugged while looking over her quidditch magazine suppressing a giggle at the memory. ''Well, that explains the trail of slugs I saw in the corridor.'' Amelia, the little sister of the quidditch captain commented grinning at the scene her head came up with. ''He seriously left a trail behind?'' Theo snickered wishing he was there to witness it.

It wasn't until hours later that Phoebe, Theo, and Amelia went to the library to study that they ran into Ron Weasely. Still holding a bucket for the slugs he was burping up. Theo snickered at the sight while Amelia's lips thinned to suppress a giggle but Phoebe looked stoically over the thin boy in front of her.

''Why are you still walking around with a bucket?'' Ron simply glared at her for the question. ''Isn't it bloody obvious?'' The irritated retort caused a slug to fall out of his mouth making Theo snicker while Amelia and Phoebe gave a look of disgust.

''You're telling me you have been like this for hours and didn't consider asking a professor or anyone for that matter to remove it?''

Phoebe raised an eyebrow at Ron with an incredulous expression. He opened his mouth again but unfortunately for him it seemed the slugs kept coming out everytime he spoke.

Phoebe decided to take pity on the boy, grabbed her hand from her robe, and cast the counter curse.

''Better?'' Phoebe asked hotly and Ron reluctantly nodded. ''Yeah, thanks...'' And with that interaction, which left the Gryffindor a bit puzzled Phoebe kept walking with her best friends trailing after her curiously.

''Why did you do that?'' Theo asked, missing the free entertainment making which caused Phoebe to roll her eyes. ''Took pity on him.'' The blond shrugged cooly while Amelia this time rolled her eyes at Phoebe's insistence of remaining stoic.

Later that same week Phoebe found herself in the library trying to find a specific book for herbology when she overheard something. "Still can't believe Dumbledore hired that bloody idiot." "He is not an idiot you have read his book and the things he has done." ''The things he says he has done.''

The blond girl peeked through the shelves to see it was the golden trio talking. She scoffed at the muggleborn words. "Seriously, you too have a crush on that buffoon granger? And here I thought you were supposed to be the smart one in your house."

The three lions immediately perked up their heads at me with sour expressions. Gryffindors and Slytherins practically hated each other on sight.

"He is our professor you shouldn't call him a buffoon. It isn't nice."

I scoffed with a air of superiority at Hermione's words.

"You know what isn't nice either? Getting a black eye or nearly getting your hair pulled out by a pixie cause an incompetent professor couldn't stop them or possibly failing a subject cause the professor can't do anything right."

Now that seems to catch her attention. Of course, she only cares about her grades. She needs to get her priorities sorted.

"He clearly is a fraud and Dumbledore hiring him was a horrid choice. You're simply being ignorant, especially if you still crush on him after all that. I thought the best of our year would have better taste in men"

Phoebe left while scoffing one last time leaving the trio in irritated silence. "Can't believe I'm agreeing with a Slytherin..." Ron grumbled out.

The Cast of a Webcomic I'm working on, give me some notes!

Overview:

The story is The Weiss Hotel, A horror webcomic set in the 1940s, 6 people get trapped within the spiritual realm after their stay at the grand opening of the Weiss Hotel, owned by famous Hollywood Producer, Henry Weiss. Will they be able to thwart the spirits that lurk and escape before dawn rises? Or be trapped within the curse that befalls the Weiss Hotel.

VERY brief character overviews from left to right:

Wanda Rose "The Mechanic": A mechanic who overheard a secret about the owner, a family oriented woman who would do anything to protect her family as the main breadwinner whole her husband is at war.

Belladonna Lockhart "The Movie Starlet": Our main character, a Hollywood starlet that is just rising off of the massive box office hit "A Singer in Scarlet". After being told she's forced to marry her costar for publicity she wants out of the Weiss Production company and of this marriage, but will she be able to escape? What will she be willing to do in order to do so?

Amelia Weiss "The Heiress": A young 17 year old apprentice to Henry Weiss, and the heiress to his company and fortune. Once she's of age shortly, she'll take over the hotel while her father focuses on the production company. But that wasn't always the case, her mother and older brother were recently involved in a horrific murder cold case that remains cold. Will the effects of this case continue to haunt her? What really happened to get her to be next in line?

Francis Bordeaux "The Star": Belladonna's costar, and a man who's been in showbiz longer than Belladonna. He was the one to tell her that she's marrying him, but he may have something lurking underneath. Could the marriage really be love, a publicity stunt, or something darker? What strings did he pull and what will he continue to do to get what he wants?

Richard Winkler "The Bellhop": The first employee hired at the Weiss Hotel to try to get in with Henry, he would do ANYTHING to be in movies and is a massive fan of Belladonna and Francis. What lengths would he go to in order to get his career? How MUCH is he a fan of Belladonna and Francis?

Stanley Morris "The Detective": ,A once famed detective who never failed a case. Until it came to the cold case of Ms. Irene and Charles Weiss. The witness that held his case together clammed up and lied on trial and his accusation and career fell apart. He still believes he's right and refuses to admit defeat, following his suspect to the hotel's opening (and closing) night. Just who does he suspect? And is that really all that is known about this case?
