What’s your elevator pitch for Turn??? I’ve been going back and forth for years about whether to watch it rip
I'VE GOT YOU MY FRIEND
1. What's it all about
TURN: Washington's Spies is basically a prequel to 'Hamilton' but instead of focusing on the life of the founding father, it targets a group of friends-turned-patriots in Setauket, leading up to the Battle of Yorktown.
('TURN'= 'Sharpe' + 'Aubreyad' with 'Hell On Wheels' sprinkles)
2. Characters
Whereas the main character- Abraham Woodhull, a cabbage farmer, and his father the Magistrate of Setauket- are annoying most of the time, the show is full of other amazing characters you'll end up loving!
Abraham Woodhull- the WORST spy ever
Tumblr media
Anna Strong- a founding MOTHER OF REBELLION, and yes she's VERY strong, we love her
Tumblr media
Benjamin Tallmadge, a head of the Intelligence, aide to Washington, too pure for this world
Tumblr media
George Washington Himself- I absolutely LOVE how they portrayed him not only as a FOUNDING FATHER™ and HERO™ he was, but a man who's vulnerable and will help his soldiers dig out the trenches
Tumblr media
(And whereas the engine which kept 'Hamilton' running was the father-son relationship between Alexander and Washington, I'd concur that we got it but between Washington and Lafayette/Tallmadge.)
Major Edmund Hewlett - aka 'Oyster' Major (because of the Oyster Bay near Setauket where he was stationed), he's a fan favourite for a reason- to witness his character develop over the seasons was sheer joy
Tumblr media
He's a gentleman, a good, decent man, and one of the most human characters in the entire show+ he cannot flirt which makes him even more precious<3
Caleb Brewster, he's capable, good-humoured comic relief in the shape of a Blackbeard, he grew up with Anne, Ben and Abraham in Setauket and camps with Washington's army, loves axes and cowboy hats
Tumblr media
And there's this RAT- John Graves Simcoe, we love to hate him, (I wish there was a stab button like during the Ides of March), he's a psychopath with tragic backstory, obsessed with killing, kind of Obadiah Hakeswill from 'Sharpe' but Simcoe does it in style™
Tumblr media
3. They have BOATS
YES THEY DO.
Tumblr media
4. Photography
Simply stunning, to choose one frame was a crime because you can pause a random episode and discover that the frame looks like a painting
Tumblr media
5. References
If you've seen 'Hell on Wheels' and liked it, you'll probably enjoy TURN as well! Just like that historically inspired series, TURN is full of good good-paced drama which has a tendency to keep you on edge every now and then, beautiful costumes, great props (cannons and guns) and (quite bloody) fight scenes
Tumblr media
WoAH, that took me like an hour but I hope it's of use- I tried so hard not to hyper fixate and I hope it shows bahhaha
Thank you for Your ask, happy to be of service! <3

Binge Watching into the New Year Once More
The holidays and chilly weather and being at home meant there was ample time to get in an excess of television watching around our house.  My wife described the post-Christmas time after our daughter went back to school early to hang out with friends (more compelling than hanging with the parental units when you have your own apartment) as hibernation.  We probably ate too much, slept too much,…

Oh! I was thinking of recent Western/Wild West dramas to watch and I remember loving Godless. But what really blew my mind was how I completely forgot about Hell on Wheels.
It came out in 2011 on AMC. The story takes place a little over 30 years prior to Red Dead Redemption 2. I don't remember everything about it but I remember loving the first couple seasons. There were lots of interesting characters in the same way of the RDR series. I might rewatch this show.
My Dad knows more about the older Western TV shows and movies. I should ask him. I just don't wanna watch anything with John Wayne in it. That man irritates my soul.

Chapter 3 - The Group
"Admit it, you only came back to Atlanta for the hat." Glenn teased as they walked under the overpass. He was surprisingly chipper despite the hostage situation. The overpass came off the interstate into the city, and supposedly where he parked their van every time he came into the city for a run.
"Don't tell anybody." Rick replied with a smile. Iris walked quietly beside T-Dog, an uncertain feeling curling up at the base of her skull. She hoped more than anything that this group could be something good. Like Guillermo said, there were too many bad people left.
"You've given away half our guns and ammo." Daryl grumbled.
"Not nearly half." Rick replied.
"For what? Bunch of old farts who are gonna die off momentarily anyhow?" He asked.
"Seriously, how long do you think they got?"
"How long do any of us?" Rick retorted. They walked around a bus that blocked their path, only to find no van waiting on the other side. Iris watched as their faces fell.
"Oh my god." Glenn mumbled.
"Where the hell's our van?" Daryl asked.
"We left it right there, who would take it?" Glenn wondered.
"Merle." Rick answered firmly.
"Your brother?" Iris asked, frowning at Daryl. He nodded, sucking on a tooth.
"Yeah. He's gonna be taking some vengeance back to camp." He replied. Iris glanced around at their current surroundings, her eyes landing on an SUV not far from the train tracks. She ran for it, finding a wooden stick spearing through the windshield, a walker pinned to the driver's seat.
"What are you doing?" Glenn called.
"Wanna get back to your camp or not?" She called back. With a sharp stab she killed the walker through the open window, opening the door to tug him out. Daryl jogged over, opening the other door and beginning to kick the broken windshield out. He popped the hood, checking it over as Iris ducked under the steering wheel and pulled wires.
"Where'd you learn to do that?" Rick asked, he and the others having decided to join in.
"Gonna arrest me if I tell you?" Iris asked, the engine roaring to life. He said nothing as she sat up. "Wouldn't be the first time." She answered simply. Glenn got in the drivers seat, all of them rushing on borrowed time.
It was dark by the time they pulled into the side road toward their camp. They were halted only by the sound of gunshots, screaming. A few walkers wandered down toward the car, but Iris' sinking feeling was coming to a head. They spared no time in jumping out, guns blazing. Iris followed Rick past tents and small clearings to a fire pit and an RV.
There were children screaming as the adults shot the walkers down one by one, making use of their new guns. There were already people on the ground, the walkers feasting on fresh flesh.
"Baby! Carl!" Rick yelled, running into the fray. The survivors were huddled around the RV as Iris and Daryl shot out the rest of the walkers, bloodied and horrified.
"Dad!" A young boy yelled, sobbing as he ran into Rick's arms. A woman with long brown hair collapsed into them both. Iris glanced nervously at the ruined camp, the sobbing kids. Some of the adults hadn't made it. Glenn was panting, his voice hoarse with panic as his knuckles turned white, gripping the gun. Iris put a hand on his shoulder, trying to even out her own breathing.
"Jesus." She whispered, wiping her blood coated knives on a dead walker's shirt.
The little boy, Carl, was sobbing into Rick's chest. A young blonde woman was kneeling beside the RV, the bloodied body at her feet sporting the same head of blonde hair.
"I remember my dream now. Why I dug the holes." A man said lowly, his face splattered with blood.
-
The Georgia sun was hot up here, beating down as the cicadas sung. It made the bodies smell worse. Iris hadn't taken the time to meet anyone, knowing they needed time to grieve. Daryl was making sure each of the bodies had a hole in their heads, a pickaxe being his tool for the job.
None of them had to ask, Iris just started burning bodies. She took extra care of the bodies that were wrapped, knowing it was one of theirs. Iris knew it might be easier for her to bury them than for them. She helped T-Dog carry them to the bed of a pickup truck, then they would cart them to a hilltop with an unorganized smattering of human-sized holes.
She approached Rick, his wife, and a few other people she hadn't met as Daryl stormed away from them. Apparently his preferred coping mechanism was to be an angry pain in the ass. A man with dark hair and a t-shirt with the sheriff's logo turned to her first, a frown seemingly sewn into his eyebrows. The second was an older man in a bucket hat, a Bermuda shirt hanging loosely from his shoulders. He walked over, a grim smile on his face.
"I'm afraid we can't roll out much of a welcome wagon." He said with a somber tone. "I'm Dale."
"Iris." She replied, shaking his hand.
"This is Shane," He introduced, gesturing to the dark-haired man, "and that's Lori and Carol.” He gestured to the woman with the long brown hair, Rick's wife, and her foil with a shaved head and grey hair. He pointed to each of the living people, listing names, but his voice began to waver, and he stopped to clear his throat.
"I'm sorry about your people." Iris said quietly. Shane nodded stiffly, making piercing eye contact before turning away. "I'll do what I can."
"It's greatly appreciated." Dale nodded with a comforting smile.
"You reap what you sow!" Daryl called out, dropping a body.
"Shut up, man." Another man, Morales, huffed.
"Y'all left my brother for dead!" Daryl yelled, storming away, pointing in Atlanta's general direction. "You had this coming." Iris watched him go with a raised eyebrow. She pulled her bandana over her face as she knelt down to help a woman named Jacqui carry another body. She nodded in thanks, though the attempted smile didn't reach her eyes. They looked up as a guy named Jim stumbled toward them.
"Are you bleeding?" Jacqui asked, frowning at the spot of blood on his t-shirt. He panted a bit, shaking his head.
"I just got some on me from the bodies." He replied, waving it off. Iris faltered, eyeing him carefully.
"That blood is fresh." She murmured.
"Were you bit?" Jacqui asked firmly.
"No, I got scratched during the attack." He assured.
"You got bit." She denied, shuffling to her feet. Iris' hand twitched toward her knife.
"I'm fine." Jim repeated.
"Then show me." Jacqui pleaded. Jim looked up, still panting hard.
"Don't tell. Please." He breathed.
"A walker got him!" Jacqui called, stumbling backward to the others. "A walker bit Jim!" Iris unsheathed her knife as they started to surround him, giving the stumbling man a wide berth, murmurs breaking out.
"I'm okay. I'm okay." Jim assured.
"Show it to us." Daryl stated. "Show it to us." Jim stumbled, leaning down to grab a shovel in defence. "Grab him! Grab him!"
"Jim, put it down. Put it down." Shane called. T-Dog lunged at him, grabbing his arms and pulling them back.
"I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm okay." Jim repeated. Daryl ran forward and peeled his shirt up, revealing the angry red bite, already festering with infection. It was on his torso, leaving them no options for amputation. Daryl dropped the shirt, both him and T-Dog moving back as Jim muttered to himself, panting.
The group ushered Jim around the back of the RV, seating him on a bucket to wait for the group's decision. They gave him a water bottle, despite Daryl's grumblings at the waste of clean water. Iris wasn't scared, more concerned. Nothing like this had happened with her old group. They had all pretty much died at once. But she'd seen it happen. This was something they couldn't ignore, couldn't tolerate. He could kill them all.
"I say we put a pickaxe in his head, and the dead girl's, and be done with it." Daryl murmured to the circle.
"Is that what you'd want if it were you?" Shane snapped angrily.
"Yeah, and I'd thank you while you did it." Daryl retorted quickly.
"I hate to say it-- and I never thought I would-- but maybe Daryl's right." Dale muttered.
"Jim's not a monster, Dale, or some rabid dog." Rick argued.
"I'm not suggesting--"
"He's sick. A sick man." He said firmly. "We start down that road, where do we draw the line?"
"The line's pretty clear. Zero tolerance for walkers. Or them to be." Daryl huffed.
"What if we can get him help?" Rick asked. "I heard the CDC was working on a cure."
"I heard that too. Heard a lot of things before the world went to hell." Shane grumbled.
"What if the CDC's still up and running?" Rick asked.
"Man, that is a stretch right there." Shane muttered.
"Why? If there's any government left, any structure at all, they'd protect the CDC at all costs, wouldn't they?" Rick proposed. "I think it's our best shot. Shelter, protection, rescue--"
"Okay, Rick, you want those things, alright? I do too, okay? Now if they exist, they're at the army base. Fort Benning." Shane argued.
"That's 100 miles in the opposite direction." Lori replied.
"That is right. But it's away from the hot zone. Now listen to me. If that place is operational, it'll be heavily armed. We'd be safe there."
"The military were on the front lines of this thing. They got overrun. We've all seen that." Rick continued. "The CDC's our best choice and Jim's only chance.
"You go looking for aspirin. Do what you need to do." Daryl scoffed, turning away. He started toward Jim. "Someone needs to have some balls to take care of this damn problem!"
"Hey hey hey!" Rick yelled, cocking his gun as Daryl raised the pickaxe to Jim. Shane got between them, protecting Jim. "We don't kill the living."
"That's funny coming from a man who just put a gun to my head." Daryl snapped. Iris raised an eyebrow. He had a point. She turned to the others, murmuring quietly without the presence of the alpha males.
"I might be overstepping, and tell me if I am, but why don't you just ask Jim what he wants to do? He's not stupid. He has to know what it means. He might not make it to the CDC, even if they do have a cure." Iris stated.
"That's what I was insinuating when I said I agreed with Daryl, I just want to do what's right for the group, including him." Dale agreed. They all watched as Rick and Shane took Jim into the forest, tying him to a tree.
-
Iris sat on the edge of a hole, her legs hanging in a grave, trying to appreciate the irony. Shane and Rick seemed to be at each other's throats, the former not so happy they came back with her instead of Merle. Daryl backed his pickup truck toward the holes, the bed filled with the sheet-covered bodies of their dead. Iris stood, dusting off her gloves and pulling the bandana back up over her face.
"I still think it's a mistake, not burning these bodies." Daryl mused as he got out of the truck. “It's what we said we'd do, right? Burn 'em all, wasn't that the idea?"
"At first." Rick replied.
"Glenn gets all emotional, says it's not the thing to do, we just follow him along?" Daryl continues. "These people need to know who the hell's in charge here, what the rules are."
"There are no rules." Rick replied.
"Well that's a problem." Lori cut in. "We haven't had one minute to hold onto anything of our old selves. We need time to mourn and we need to bury our dead. It's what people do." Iris said nothing, grabbing onto a body, Glenn running up to take the other side. It was uncomfortable, to say the least, bearing witness to all these arguments. She felt like she was watching some twisted reality show.
Once the rest of the bodies were buried, everyone stood aside to let Andrea, the blonde woman, bury her sister. She refused to let anyone help, dragging the dead weight across the ground, haphazardly stumbling. She practically fell into the grave, but the tear tracks on her face did more than enough convincing for them to leave her be. Dale tried desperately to help her, but she didn't want it.
A few of the others watching were crying too, stepping forward only to shovel dirt on top of the body. Once the hole was filled, they walked down the hill together, back to the camp. The sound of their footsteps were accompanied only by small sniffles and Andrea's sobbing.
Iris sat down on a log beside the remains of the campfire as a few went into the RV to check on Jim. Lori brought Carol back out to let Rick talk to him. It was hard to watch. All of it. It was hard to be there. Iris knew Daryl held resentment for her, for not being his brother. All those people that died, only for her to show up out of nowhere. She didn't expect anything from them, helping where she could.
After a few hours, the others joined her around the fire, gathering together as the sun began to set. Dale, Shane and Rick came out of the forest, Dale looking like he just saw a ghost, and Shane looking like he just lost an argument. They gathered around the others. Shane taking his spot at the head of the group.
"I've uh... I've been thinking about Rick's plan." He began. "Now, look, there are no guarantees either way. I'll be the first one to admit that. I've known this man a long time. I trust his instincts. I say the most important thing here is we need to stay together. So those of you that agree, we leave first thing in the morning. Okay?"
The others said nothing, Shane's announcement earning only a few nods in agreement. Iris would follow the group wherever it went. She trusted Rick too, just not in the same way. And Shane would likely agree with Iris if she voiced out loud that Rick seemed a little optimistic considering their circumstances. Yet, every morning, he climbed that hill, speaking into a radio like it was keeping him sane.
The CDC seemed like a safe enough bet. The only issue was its location in the city. And if Rick happened to be wrong, and they all changed their minds, Fort Benning would be a far trip. Traveling in this world was hard. It was harder with kids. And this group had four, plus an injured man. Iris had to admit, the CDC was a long shot. But that seemed like the only kind they had.

Mayfair Witches S2E2 (Show & Book Spoilers) - Julien & Cortland Delivered!
Rest in peace Gifford; rot in pieces Alicia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poor thing thought that she was reading everyone else's fate in the tarot, when she was really reading her own. U_U
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uhhh, nice to meet you too, Mr. I-Used-To-Swim-In-The-Ocean. 🤨
Tumblr media
Gurl, then you'll LOVE Lasher. 🤦
Tumblr media
I am so happy we're getting the hemorrhages plot, but I need them to start saying that they're miscarriages.
Tumblr media
Cuz it's not that Lasher wants to "seduce", that's a lie--he wants to BREED. But I guess the Insider interviews doesn't wanna give it away.
Tumblr media
I'm getting the sense that AMC!Lasher is way more ignorant than book!Lasher. As in, he doesn't know what he wants from the Mayfairs, the way book!Lasher did. Cuz book!Lasher was a MONSTER with Rowan, he had her literally tied to the bed, until she got pregnant. And he knew shew was pregnant before she did, cuz he could talk with Emaleth. He knew exactly wtf he was doing, but was just playing dumb cuz he KNEW not to trust her.
Tumblr media
JFC Rowan, WHY would you say that to him!? You're supposed to be tryna get him to NOT run away & kill more Mayfairs, you effing IDIOT!
Tumblr media
I'm almost feeling BAD for Lasher, cuz he really does seem lost. I don't like that; I want him to be a VILLAIN. They seem to be really softening Lasher's edges, and it's lame--esp. since you're saying he's a "demon"--well then show us that already!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That bug seems to have started GLOWING when it drank Lasher's blood. I legit thought it was gonna grow in size and be the size of a dog or something crazy, LOL. 😅
Tumblr media
DANG, Jojo! 😂 She's a straight savage--see Rowan, THIS is a woman who stands on BUSINESS! Eff Cortand! 🤣
Tumblr media
Interesting masks. I wonder if they mean anything, and exactly which ghosts these are supposed to be--maybe the most recent Mayfair victims of Cortland: Dierdre, Antha & Stella? 🤔 Cuz ALL of the witches were haunting the house, IIRC.
Tumblr media
Julien as this awful tyrannical father who "made" him do everything is interesting. But I agree with Rowan (omg no 🤦🤢), cuz there's plenty of effed up things Cortland did long after Julien was dead (fathering Rowan on his own daughter Dierdre being one of them). It wasn't for Julien, and it wasn't for the family; it was for power & ego, plain & simple. Cortland wanted to prove that he was important & indispensable, and with Dierdre a vegetable, Rowan being flakey, Carlotta being evil AF and Mona being just a kid, HE was the one pretty much running the legacy. Which was a big deal, cuz everyone knew ALL the men in the family were effing useless eunuchs Lasher was never interested in giving his power to--except for Julien. 💦🍆
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good googly moogly! 💀😂 (Oh, the horror--stepping out and NOT being incestuous for once! The humanity~~~!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
💀😂 BEST SCENE IN THE WHOLE SERIES. 💀😂 Julien's eating his arm with a MACHETE, whaaaaaaat!?! THE GOAT! See, THIS is the pocket AMC needs to stay in; Anne Rice is best when she's effing WEIRD, and this cannibalism scene fits in SO perfectly with her vibe. Don't be afraid to be GROSS and effed up & visceral & graphic!
Tumblr media
Sounds like John 6:39-41 Bible verses gone HELLA wrong.
Tumblr media
But I wonder if this is AMC's version of Ancient Evelyn's prophecy that she told Oncle Julien?
"Slay the flesh that is not human Trust to weapons crude and cruel.... Make the dead come back to witness...."
Tumblr media
Cuz the Mayfairs thought Evelyn's prophecy meant that by bringing Lasher into the world, he'd show them all how to be reborn again and cheat death. But they'd already cheated death by being ghosts haunting the house--their immortality was ALREADY won, in that they'd damned their souls by working with Lasher. They lowkey MADE him evil--I think Rowan was MAYBE onto something, that if he'd been treated/raised right, he probably wouldn't be Hell on wheels. But none of the Mayfairs intended to use him for good.
And I'm glad that AMC's calling out how much Rowan loves all the new magical powers she has--which she never had to THIS degree in the books. It's like ghost!Millie said: Rowan's not serious about killing Lasher, cuz he'd be dead already if she was.
Tumblr media
Like, Rowan didn't need to raise that storm--ghost!Millie was like it'll inconvenience Lasher for an hour, tops. She raised the storm cuz she wanted to see if she COULD do that kind of magic--power & ego.
Tumblr media
CIPRIEN. My brother in Christ. PLEASE don't tick me off, I like you.
Tumblr media
I hated this heifer Alicia in S1, I hate her in S2, and I DGAF about her in the books. Bye, Felicia.
Tumblr media
Omfg AMC, SHOW US!! Don't just TELL us! Those are the best parts of the book! That's where the HORROR is! 🤦
Tumblr media
Chile, run screaming in the opposite direction if you know what's good for you, Lark--eff them puzzles. But ISTG the dialogue on this show is so freaking mediocre, but it's made even worse by the flat AF delivery by mediocre acting. It's not cute, it's not charming, it's cringe.
Tumblr media
Esta if you don't stop lying right now. 🙄😒 IF ONLY Daddario had chemistry with ANYONE on this show, omg it would be so much better to watch.
As for Episode 3:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DO NOT tell me MillennialFledgling!Felix is gonna jump Lasher and drink his blood! 👀 That can only end badly, right????
But yeah, this is much more interesting than S1. Lasher wasn't a PROBLEM in S1, the stakes were too low, cuz AMC never established wtf he was or why people should be afraid of him. S2 has the benefit of a more action-packed 2nd book, where Mayfairs are dropping like flies, Lasher's missing, and we got more details about WHAT the Mayfairs are (since AMC obvs DGAF about explaining WHO they are). So this is a major improvement--a low bar, granted, but still. Hopefully they keep it up.

Tell it to me straight. What chance do Donnie's have at resurrecting Donnie? I hear they're doing full on campaigns and I can see them going out of their way to comment negatively on all Caryl posts. Their Donnie posts seem to get quite a bit of engagement from fans. We know that Donnie has previously been encouraged by AMC higher ups, EP's and actors. So what's stopping AMC from bring LR back for S3 or any other season?
I thought they didn’t believe fan campaigns work? 🤪 Anyways, there is significant overlap between Donnie and Richonne fans who are loud and active right now because of TOWL airing, but they aren’t a reliable market for Caryl’s show. Melissa also didn’t sign on to be a third wheel 🙄 The antis will go to great lengths to sabotage, so just keep being vocal about your needs as a Carol/Caryl fan on SM and I hope that AMC will promote the hell out of Carol and Caryl in positive ways to encourage more Caryl engagement. Raise Caryl, Carol, and Melissa up, and we'll raise them up.

Not really a Sims focused post but somehow this niche blog has more followers than my main lmao
I can't sleep and I'm thinking about how my hyperfixations changed since I started taking ADHD meds around a year? ago. And just, hyperfixations in general.
I've had hyperfixations since as long as I can remember, long before I even knew what they were or that there was even a word for it. Even as a kid I would get so fixated on something that I'd spend all my free time analyzing it, writing fanfics, scouring the internet in the glory days of AOL and Geocities/Angelfire/etc fan sites, making fanart and trying to surround myself with it as much as I could. Things I love would (and still do) seep their way into my own characters and stories in the form of inspiration or references.
I have a huge love/hate relationship with hyperfixations. I love having them because I'm just generally passionate about things I love and that goes into OVERDRIVE when a hyperfixations hits. I love having something that occupies my mind and gives me that rush of inspiration and adrenaline, especially when I'm able to draw or write about it. However, throughout my life it's always been seen as a negative thing to people in my life. Having people say "is this your obsession of the week" or implying that once I'm "over it" I won't like the thing and I'll move on to something else.
Which brings me to the other reason I hate hyperfixations. I hate the guilt and feeling of abandonment? when I feel it start to fade, or when I feel myself being drawn to something else. I hate the lingering worry that people won't think I'm a "real fan." I'm sure these feelings are due to people making me feel self-conscious about it throughout my life, and it's still something I struggle with.
It's so rare for me to permanently lose an interest. When a hyperfixation goes dormant it doesn't mean I love the thing any less. I've realized that, nowadays, I try to keep my hyperfixations to myself (mostly IRL) and not make it obvious what I'm currently focused on. I find myself feeling nervous and mildly ashamed to share my hyperfixations with people close to me IRL. And it frustrates me that I feel that way.
I suffer quite a lot from imposter syndrome and rejection sensitivity so I'm sure that plays a big part.
But on to how my meds affected my hyperfixations. When I first got diagnosed with ADHD and meds were discussed I was so afraid I would lose my ability to hyperfixate on things. It's always been that I fixate on something, it lasts generally from a month to three months until my focus shifts to something else. I've never really been able to hyperfixate on more than one thing. But since I started taking meds I find I not only can hyperfixate on more than one thing at a time, but they're lasting so much longer. It's like they're not going dormant like they used to. There's a period where the focus and obsession is at its peak and then it dwindles down but still sticks around while something else takes focus. And where a hyperfixation would normally last three months or so, now they're just... There. I've been focused on The Sims and Jem and the Holograms since I started taking meds, and they occupy my mind all day on rotation alongside more recent hyperfixations like AMC's Hell On Wheels and my own characters. If I had a single micron of free time in my life right now I guarantee every second of it would be spent doing fanart or fanfics lol.
ANYWAY it's past 5am and my eyes are sizzling out of my head. Thank you for coming to my insomnia ramble.

January 11 marks When Calls the Heart’s 10th anniversary, and it’s been a decade full of drama — both in the fictional Coal Valley and, occasionally, in real life.
In honor of the show’s 10th birthday, here are some fun facts about the Hallmark hit that you might not know…
It was a Hallmark movie before it was a Hallmark series.
youtube
Before producer Michael Landon Jr. developed the When Calls the Heart TV show, he turned the same Janette Oke story into a Hallmark movie. Also titled When Calls the Heart, that 2013 movie featured Maggie Grace, Jean Smart, and Stephen Amell. And Lori Loughlin plays Abigail in both versions.
The original plan was to film When Calls the Heart in Colorado.
In June 2013, producers announced plans to film the TV series version of When Calls the Heart in Telluride, Colorado, in a move that then-Governor John Hickenlooper said would create 200 jobs and an economic impact of $15 million, as the Denver Business Journal reported at the time.
Just weeks later, however, the production shifted to Vancouver, British Columbia, because it had outgrown Colorado’s $2.7-million incentive program, as the Journal noted.
The crew built the Coal Valley set in less than a month.

Production designer Brendan Harron told reporters that the When Calls the Heart crew built Coal Valley’s buildings — a schoolhouse, a Mountie outpost, a café, et cetera — in three and a half weeks, according to The Canadian Press. And the buildings are all fully furnished — and often tarnished to look aged.
Some props came from another cable TV drama.
Harron also said that some of the When Calls the Heart props — including a stagecoach — were recycled from Hell on Wheels, an AMC drama about the construction of the United States’ first transcontinental railroad.
Fans can visit the set and even meet the cast members.
The Hearties Family Reunion, which took place for the seventh time in September 2023, lets fans explore the Hope Valley set, talk with cast members, and meet fellow “Hearties” from all over the world.

The costumes aren’t meant to be historically accurate.
Hallmark Channel asked costume designer Barbara Gregusova to keep the costumes aesthetically similar to the wardrobe on the rest of its shows, and not necessarily accurate to When Calls the Heart’s time period.
And that works out well, money-wise. “We don’t really have a budget for me building costumes from 1910,” Gregusova told TV Insider in 2016. “So that’s why it’s easier to incorporate that modern feel, because I can go to a store and buy something.”
Daniel Lissing and Erin Krakow wrote their character’s wedding vows.
Ahead of Jack Thornton and Elizabeth Thatcher’s onscreen wedding, Lissing and Krakow talked about writing their characters’ wedding vows themselves, as Lissing told Entertainment Tonight in 2018.
youtube
“So we took that to the producers, and they were like, ‘Well, yeah, you guys know the characters better than anyone else does,’” the actor added. “I wrote Jack’s vows and she wrote Elizabeth’s, and there’s that connection there.”
Jack Wagner and Kristina Wagner were previously married — on screen and off.
Before playing ex-spouses Bill and Nora Avery on When Calls the Heart, the Wagners played General Hospital supercouple Frisco Jones and Felicia Cummings on General Hospital, and they were married in real life between 1993 and 2006.
“It was very frightening to work together again,” Jack said of working with Kristina on When Calls the Heart in a 2015 Associated Press interview. “We know each other from that one format, which is General Hospital, and we knew exactly what to do there. These are new characters. But we really worked through it and we have a great chemistry.”

The character development of that man I SWEAR, god how I love when AMC does it. I'm not going to spoil everything,
Tbh, I came to watch the show for Washington but stayed for the Oyster Major<3
It's a good-paced drama, which reminds me a lot of 'Hell On Wheels', costumes and photography are STUNNING, and Burn ATE SO WELL. It is however bloody, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I do recommend it nonetheless!
Hope you enjoy the show 🤞🏻

Chapter 4 - The CDC
“Everybody listen up.” Shane called. “Those of you with C.B.s, we’re gonna be on channel forty. Let’s keep the chatter down, okay? Now you got a problem, don’t have a C.B., can’t get a signal or anything at all, you’re gonna hit your horn one time. That’ll stop the caravan. Any questions?”
“We’re, ah… we’re not going.” Morales stated, glancing at his family before he turned back to Shane. The rest of the group had packed their things, the line of cars trailing out of the camp in preparation for the journey. Iris stood with her arms crossed, watching the group.
“We have family in Birmingham.” Morales’ wife explained, hugging her daughter close to her chest. “We want to be with our people.” Iris wouldn’t say it out loud, but two less children to care for is a significant advantage for survival. These people weren’t exactly prepared for this kind of life. Hell, was anyone?
“You go on your own, you won’t have anyone to watch your back.” Shane warned.
“We’ll take our chances. I gotta do what’s best for my family.” Morales said with a nod.
“You sure?” Rick asked.
“We talked about it.” He confirmed. “We’re sure.”
“Alright.” Rick nodded. “Shane?” He asked, glancing down at the bag of guns.
"Yeah, alright.” Shane agreed. Rick fished through the bag, handing Morales and his wife a gun and a box of ammo. “Box is half full.” Daryl looked none too pleased about the exchange. He scoffed, turning away to prepare his things before he exploded again.
Morales and his wife exchanged goodbyes and hugs with the people in the group they’d become close with, and little Carl even shed a few tears for his friends. Iris nodded to Morales, shaking his hand despite never really speaking. They walked to their own car, and as the group filed into the available cars, they said goodbye to the camp.
Dale and Glenn led the caravan in the RV, Rick, Lori with the kids in the second car. Jacqui and Jim were in the back of the RV, treating the symptoms of the infection while they drove. Carol, T-Dog and Andrea followed in an old van, then Iris and Shane in Shane’s jeep. Daryl brought up the end in an old pickup truck, his motorcycle carefully strapped into the bed.
“So, what’s your deal?” Shane asked, one hand on the window frame of the door and the other on the wheel.
“My deal?” Iris asked, raising an eyebrow at him. She’d tied her hair back with the bandana, her knives strapped tight to her hips and legs. She’d agreed to ride with Shane with the expectation he would interrogate her about her life, and because she was comfortable holding her own if the caravan was overrun.
“Yeah. Conveniently show up and join the camp, right when we need you, huh?” He asked, eyeing her from the side. The corner of Iris’ mouth pulled upward and she rolled her eyes.
“Rick made me a deal.” She explained. “I helped get Glenn, I back you up, and a good portion of the guns in that bag are mine.” She gestured vaguely to the duffel in the backseat, and Shane tensed. In complete honestly, Iris didn’t know where her loyalties lay, and Shane was very aware of that. These people didn’t know her, and she didn’t know them. If it came down to it, would she really stay?
They rode for another hour in silence, every so often the radio crackling as Shane checked everyone was good. Dale’s voice came up soon after, explaining that he was pulling the RV over. Iris hopped out of the jeep quickly, coming up to see steam rising from the RV’s grill.
“I told you we’d never get far on that hose.” Dale muttered, putting his hands on his hips as he sat back and examined the damage. Rick sighed, adjusting his hat in the hot sun. “I said I needed the one from the cube van.”
“Can you jury-rig it?” Rick asked.
“That’s all it’s been so far. It’s more duct-tape than hose. And I’m out of duct-tape.” Dale replied, making a face.
“I see something up ahead.” Shane called, peering through a pair of binoculars. “A gas station if we’re lucky.”
“Y’all, Jim— it’s bad. I don’t think he can take anymore.” Jacqui warned as she ran out of the RV. Iris frowned at the gravity of the situation. No one had decided what to do with him should he not make it to the CDC.
“Hey, Rick, you want to hold down the fort? I’ll drive ahead, see what I can bring back?” Shane offered.
“I’ll come. I know what to look for.” Iris added.
“You know what the RV engine needs?” Shane asked suspiciously. Iris rolled her eyes. Her entire life, men never accepted she knew anything about cars.
“I was a mechanic, once.” She stated. To reassure herself, she peered through the grate of the RV, nodding. “I’ll see if I can find some other replacements. There’s a hell of a lot of duct-tape in here.”
“Gotta keep it running somehow.” Dale shrugged, chuckling. Iris nodded, offering a small smile.
“I’ll come along too, back you up.” T-Dog offered. Shane nodded.
“Y’all keep your eyes open, now. We’ll be right back.” Shane called. Rick nodded, taking off his hat as he followed Jacqui into the RV. They loaded into the jeep, driving up ahead to the gas station.
It was old and abandoned, that was for sure. An old clock that looked like a bottle cap ticked loudly through the place. It’d been looted, but there were a few water bottles and packages of jerky that T-Dog filled his backpack with. Iris found a patch for the radiator hose. Not one that was made for an RV, but it would work if she could fashion it properly. She also grabbed another few rolls of duct-tape while Shane waited outside, guarding the door with his gun.
When they returned, Rick was sitting on the steps of the RV with his head in his hands.
“It’s what he says he wants.” Rick explained as they stood around outside the RV. Jim told him he wanted them to leave him here. With his family. How long they’d been gone, Iris wasn’t sure, but they really should limit their liability risks.
“And he’s lucid?” Carol asked, incredulous.
“He seems to be.” Rick confirmed. “I would say yes.”
“Back in the camp, when I said Daryl might be right, and you shut me down,” Dale said quietly, “you misunderstood. I would never go along with… callously killing a man. I was just gonna suggest that we ask Jim what he wants. Iris said the same.” He gestured to her and she nodded. “I think we have an answer.”
“We just leave him here? Take off?” Shane asked, rubbing a hand over his face as he turned to Rick. “Man, I’m not sure I could live with that.”
“It’s not your call.” Lori stated. “Either one of you.” Iris let a small smile play across her lips. She liked Lori. She didn’t put up with the alpha male pissing contest bullshit they liked to play at.
With that, Shane and Rick hauled Jim out of the RV, carefully trudging up the hill at the side of the road and placing him at the base of a thick oak tree. It cast a good amount of shade over the area, and Jim sighed as he practically sunk into the earth. Iris stayed back at the RV while Daryl patrolled the area and the rest of the group said their goodbyes.
None of them were particularly comfortable with the situation, but if it was what Jim wanted, it was for the best. And deep down, Iris knew they knew it was best for their group. It was emotional for all of them, that was evident. Even Daryl went to apologize quietly before they all went back to their separate vehicles. Iris watched Jim stare up into the sky, and he seemed to sigh in relief as the caravan pulled away.
When they arrived at the CDC they were overwhelmed by the smell of the bodies. Iris fashioned her bandana over her face once more as they armed themselves in preparation. Most of them seemed completely dead, but you could never be too careful. Swarms of flies surrounded the place, maggots festering. The roads had been blocked off in a perimeter around the building, barricades of sand bags providing protection to the National Guard whose bodies they now stepped over.
Rick led the way as they passed the bodies, tanks, military trucks. Everyone moved in a large group, keeping quiet apart from coughing as they walked to the building. Carol and Lori continuously whispered encouragements to their kids, who had hands over their noses, mouths and eyes. The doors to the building were covered with metal grates, all of which seemed bolted into the ground.
“Nothing?” Shane asked as Rick rattled the grate. Iris took note of the security cameras around the place, searching for any indication of activity. Shane pounded angrily on the door.
“There’s nobody here.” T-Dog muttered.
“Then why are these shutters down?” Rick asked argumentatively. Iris tilted her head. He had a point. But whoever had been inside could be long dead.
“Walkers!” Daryl called out in warning. Sophia, Carol’s daughter, began whimpering in fear as they all turned toward the dead.
“Watch the noise.” Iris warned as they cocked their guns. Daryl stepped forward with his crossbow, taking care of the closest one, a man in an army uniform.
“You led us into a graveyard!” Daryl snapped, scowling at Rick.
“Shh!” Dale warned.
“He made a call.” Shane snapped back, grabbing a shotgun.
“It was the wrong damn call!”
“Just shut up. You hear me? Shut up. Shut up!” Shane growled, shoving Daryl backward and pointing a finger to his face. He whipped around. “Rick, this is a dead end.”
“Where are we gonna go?” Carol asked, clutching her daughter to her closely.
“Do you hear me? No blame.” Shane continued.
“She’s right. We can’t be here, this close to the city after dark.” Lori agreed with Carol.
“This place will be crawling soon. We’re making too much noise. Even the sound of the cars.” Iris said quietly, surveying their surroundings. They had their backs up against a wall here.
“Fort Benning, Rick. Still an option.” Shane stated.
“On what?” Andrea asked. “No food, no fuel. That’s a hundred miles.”
“125. I checked the map.” Glenn corrected. Iris raised an eyebrow.
“Forget Fort Banning. We need answers tonight. Now.” Lori snapped, trying to console her sobbing son.
“We’ll think of something.” Rick insisted as they all began shouting, pleading with him. Iris kept quiet, watching him. She glanced back at the shutters, freezing.
“Alright, everyone back to the cars.” Shane called.
“Rick. The camera. The camera moved. It’s recording, but it moved.” Iris said loudly, pointing to the camera.
“You imagined it.” Dale stated quickly, shaking his head.
“No way.” She pulled down her bandana, stepping closer. “Someone’s inside.”
“Look, it’s dead, alright? An automated device. Gears, okay?” Shane said, shaking his head. Rick walked up to the camera, looking straight into it. “Look around this place. You hear me? It’s dead. You need to let it go, Rick!” Rick shoved past him, slamming his hands against the metal shutters again.
“Rick, there’s nobody here!” Lori screamed.
“I know you’re in there! I know you can hear me.” Rick yelled into the camera. Shane was yelling at the others to run back to the cars. The dreaded groaning of walkers got louder with them. “Please, we’re desperate! Please help us. We have women, children. No food, hardly any gas left.”
“Rick. Rick!” Lori pleaded.
“We have nowhere else to go!”
“There’s nobody here.” Lori insisted. “Rick, please!”
“You don’t let us in, you’re killing us!”
“Come on, buddy, let’s go.” Shane pulled at him, the others already halfway to the cars with Daryl leading the charge. Iris stood, staring straight into the camera as they wrestled with Rick. Shane started pulling him as he screamed.
“You’re killing us! You’re killing us! You’re killing us—“ They all stopped as the singular shutter screeched loudly, sliding open. They all whipped around as it thudded, pressurized air moving around, hissing.
They kept their guard up, Daryl covering their backs as they hesitantly walked inside.
“Hello?” Rick called. The building was enormous, an architect’s baby, columns spiralling up to a pointed roof and huge walls of windows trailing upward. The lobby was the majority of spaces, with what looked like offices above. But somewhere, there had to be more. “Hello?”
“Close those doors. Watch for walkers.” Dale warned, Daryl shutting the pedestrian doors behind them. They all stopped, looking around the space, waiting.
“Hello!” A voice called from the opposite end of the lobby. He stood in the mouth of the hallway. The man had scruffy hair and was wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants, but the grip he had on the military-grade rifle in his hands was confident. “Anybody infected?”
“One of our group was. He didn’t make it.” Rick replied. They all kept their weapons up.
“Why are you here? What do you want?” The man asked.
“A chance.” Rick replied simply. Optimistically. Obnoxiously.
“That’s asking an awful lot these days.” The man replied.
“I know.” Rick agreed. The man’s gaze flicked across each of them, taking in the sight of their group.
“You all submit to a blood test. That’s the price of admission.” The man said lowly.
“We can do that.” The man put his gun down.
“You got stuff to bring in, you do it now. Once this door closes, it stays closed.” He said firmly, gesturing outside.
Iris, Shane, Rick, Glenn and Daryl all ran outside, gathering bags and doing runs from the vehicles. They each took one, finding it easier to be agile when they separated. T-Dog and Dale manned the doors, closing them tight and opening them wide each time they ran in and out. In a few minutes, everything was in a pile in the lobby. Rick gave him the go-ahead, and the man scanned a keycard.
“Vi, seal the main entrance.” He spoke into it. “Kill the power up here.” The grate slid shut over the doors as the key panel beeped and blinked red.
“Rick Grimes.” Rick introduced, offering his hand to shake. The doctor looked at him warily, making no move to shake his hand.
“Dr. Edwin Jenner.” He replied.
