There's a meme going around to draw your comfort characters as the Steven meme.
Bowser's never been a comfort character for me, but thinking about how great an Illumination Smash Bros movie would be with these two having the dumbest greatest villain team dynamic has brought me SO much joy this year.

ao3 directors commentary for the eddie kaspbrak reddit one bc holy shit i didn’t realize that was you
WHAT A BLAST FROM THE PAST THANK YOU
I killed a clown. AMA! (IT Movies — Eddie/Richie; Outsider POV / social media fic)
I (39M) got stabbed twice today and now I want a divorce. Help? Or: the one where Eddie is on Reddit.
Like I said in the fic endnotes, this one owes a lot to anons over at FFA (anon comm on dreamwidth) where some beautiful-brained anon came up with the idea of "What if reddit’s response to a Reddie fixit fic plot?" with a lot of interesting conversations about how Eddie would totally be a redditor and he would type out long winded screeds about his emotional state and family and childhood trauma and how absolutely nut it would look from the outside. So that was the original idea, and I casually started coming up with thread names and ideas about what Eddie could possibly get up to on reddit
I (37M) accidentally called my wife (38F) ‘mommy’. Now she’s mad at me
I think this was the one that made me go, "Wait, there's a funny fic here." I had a blast trying to come up with a plausible reddit user history for Eddie (he's into cars and haunts r/personalfinance and offers terribly backhanded advice!) and Myra (she likes the bachelor and has a messy family of her own). I love writing outsider POV fics because you get to pick and choose how much should be revealed and when for maximum effect; this was one of those fics where I knew 100% where I was going from the start and it was all about crafting it and it felt SO satisfying.
Formatting it was hell. In the years since I wrote this fic someone has come up with a CSS skin that makes everything look like a reddit thread and it looks so much better and I keep telling myself I will edit the fic and update to the skin but. The idea of formatting it again is daunting. ONE DAY.
Thank you so much for asking me about this fic it was such a great blast from the past <3

I recently read an article in which Quentin Tarantino stated that fewer movie stars exist as a result of "Marvel movies in Hollywood." I think Jennifer Aniston made a similar argument before saying that there are no longer any movie stars. I'm not sure what that means. I can think of a lot of movie stars right now, such as Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, and Zoey Deutch etc. what do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and Quentin's comments.
QuillBot's
Months ago, when you sent me this ask, anon, I wrote out a really long reply and as soon as I hit post, my laptop crashed and ate the answer, and I was so annoyed at myself for not saving my reply, that I couldn't bring myself to try and re-write an answer. I'm really sorry for that, especially because I think this is such an interesting ask (or well, two asks, because I think the death of the movie star and the impact Marvel's had on the broader concept of a movie star, are kinda two different things).
I've been thinking about it a bit again recently though, particularly as the Oscar race gears up, and Jacob Elordi and Charles Melton''s respective stars are rising in an industry currently desperate to find the new young Hollywood male 'talent', and I've been thinking about it again because honestly?
I agree with Jennifer Aniston, I think the movie star is dead.
We are a long, long way from Golden Age Hollywood where actors like Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe could captivate a public imagination in a way that translated to big box office effect, after all. Hell, we're even out of New Hollywood, an era dominated by names like Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, and Jane Fonda, and the Blockbuster era with Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone and Harrison Ford.
My original reply went into a lot of the different reasoning as to why this is (like with many things, I don't think there's any one reason for it), in particular how the advent of streaming has changed our relationship with films and TV shows, how the saturation of the market has diluted the staying power of celebrities, how social media and the perceived accessibility of celebrities removes personal mystique which in turn removes intrigue and increases a sense of entitlement, and the fact that so many people having stopped going to the cinema means that the experiential element of seeing a film in a setting larger than life has been diminished.
I think call out culture plays a role too, with any actor on the rise being torn down by tweets they made eight, nine or ten years ago impacting how their star rises, I think the dismantling of the studio system (which is a good thing!) also harmed actors in the long run as studios stopped investing the same resources into making and training stars (they used to be able to sing, dance and act! Now some can barely even act!), and I think, of course, the rise of prestige TV changed the industry substantially (after all, movie stars were movie stars - they traditionally did not, and would not, do TV, which created a clear class structure in terms of screen-based storytelling).
And yeah, I think the language shift from film and TV to content has done irrepairable damage to the artistry of filmmaking and the consideration of a movie star as an actor at the top of their field instead of an actor with the most Insta followers or YouTube subscribers (after all, if everything's content, isn't it the same thing? [no lol]).
Which I guess is kind of where Quentin Tarantino's argument comes in, right? What he's saying is that Marvel's made it so that the IP - the content itself - is the star, not the actor, and I'd say he's probably right with that.
Think of it this way - back in the New Hollywood/Blockbuster era, Harrison Ford was the movie star - he was leading new franchises left-right-and-centre between Star Wars and Indiana Jones, sci fi epics like Blade Runner, leading action thrillers like Patriot Games, The Fugitive and Clear and Present Danger and getting nominated for Oscars for Witness.
He was a movie star in every sense of the word because you could hinge a film - one with a new concept, not just remakes or sequels - on him and be virtually guaranteed a success. He was what sold the tickets, the director just hopefully had to make something good enough people would leave the cinema glad they saw.
Tarantino's argument is the Marvel model - - hell, even the new Star Wars properties, turned the franchise into the star, for better or worse, which means original films can't compete because nobody knows the IP. Back when Harrison Ford was at the top of his game, his name was what helped original films including smaller, standalone works like Witness find an audience, but the studios have changed that. Capitalism has changed that.
Properties with existing audiences and deep pockets for merch were prioritised, only now those franchises are faltering and you've got a generation trained that 'cinematic events' are reserved for blockbusters in established universes, instead of taking a risk on a new film because you know you love an actor who's in it.
Do I think we could go back?
Maybe, but probably not.
I think the place we are now in the history of cinema / TV / 'content' means you can't make a movie star anymore because I think the industry is simply so different that no actor can break through in the same way that even Leonardo DiCaprio could 30 years ago. That industry doesn't exist anymore, actors aren't guaranteed draws (Bones and All proved that for Timothee Chalamet, and Wonka I think could go a similar way), or they have to heavily rely on other industries to become household names which I think dilutes them as a pure 'movie star' (Zendaya's a great example of this - I like her a lot, but how many movies has she even been in? They built her career up in peripheral industries long before they tried to sell her as a movie star, and frankly, I'd question her even as a leading actress yet given she's typically only either been in ensemble casts or clear supporting).
It's a whole new world, and yeah, I think the movie star is dead.

Genuinely curious as to if you asked permission to use Rachel’s characters and she said yes or if you just decided Lore Olympus is popular enough to make a fan comic of and are hoping you don’t receive a cease and desist? Can anyone create a remake comic of original content and just change what you don’t like about it and it’s considered legal if you say the characters belong to the original creator? There is plenty of disappointing media out there that could be remade. I understand you cannot use their characters for profit so is just posting it ok?
Yes, anyone can, because it's called fanfiction lmao Obviously in my case the term "fan" is being used loosely here as at this point it's more like "foe"fiction LMAO but the same principles apply. Unless I try to claim LO is my own creation or make a profit off Rekindled, I should be in the clear. If legal action was taken against me then it would set a precedent against all forms of fanfiction, rewrite, redraw, etc. content around LO which are all essentially doing the same thing Rekindled is doing. I think people tend to view Rekindled as somewhat of an "exception" that's vulnerable to legal action because it's an actual weekly comic put into practice in the same playing field as LO (though they're on massively different bases obviously LOL), but there's not much more separating it from the LO redraw accounts or even the genuine fan accounts that have learned how to draw in Rachel's style (and use it to make their own LO self-inserts and whatnot). I had the time and resources and experience to do what I do through Rekindled, but every redraw, rewrite, fanfiction, etc. account are making the exact same statement I am, whether intentionally or not - "I do/don't like the canon, but/so here's what I think it would be like if it went like this".
There is definitely plenty of media out there that could be remade, and a lot of them are by the fanfiction writers out there who are filling that niche within their respective fandoms. LO is the one I want to do because it's the one that interests me and compels me the most to rewrite.
Not to mention, it's already a bold statement in and of itself to say that I'm "using Rachel's characters", a statement that likely wouldn't hold up in court LMAO Her "characters" are literally just stylized self-insert versions of public domain figures. She did not write The Hymn to Demeter. She did not create Hades, or Persephone, or Hecate, or any of the other characters she writes about. She does not own an entire religion or its deities. The only thing that she really "owns" is the licensing rights to the name "Lore Olympus", and while the style of LO is very unique and identifiable, you can't trademark/copyright a style because that uproots the entire foundation of what art is (ironically no one has had an original idea SINCE the Greeks, we all just learn and adapt our styles based on other artists that we get inspired by and learn from).
Shit, there are series completely unrelated to LO that get harassed or otherwise warned that they could cross into "legal territory" with LO just because they're Greek myth comics. Punderworld, Theia Mania, H x P Ficlets, all of these are comics that also tackle the H x P myth, and while they aren't attempting to do the same thing as Rekindled (as they exist on their own terms) it's really disappointing when I see people talk about these comics purely through the scope of Lore Olympus as if LO invented Greek myth. If WT/Rachel tried to pull rank over the story's "characters", they'd be picking a fight with every other Greek myth comic, book, movie, etc. and they oughta know that's not a fight they're gonna win lol
So everything beyond LO's branding is, in and of itself, fanfiction. Rekindled is just another level deeper by being fanfiction of a fanfiction. As long as I'm not profiting off Lore Olympus' namesake or distributing my work with the misconception that I created LO, it's legally fine. Morally, I'm sure it doesn't exactly make me a saint to do it, it definitely took a lot of hubris for me to say "yeah I don't like how you wrote your story enough that I felt the need to rewrite it completely" and I wouldn't blame anyone for thinking doing so is icky. There are certain lines I won't cross - I don't use the general LO hashtags because my content is very critical and my work isn't really for the fans, I don't encourage anyone to "show Rachel" what I do here because none of what I do here is obligated to be seen by her (and I know it wouldn't be in her best interest to see it anyways, she's literally said that she doesn't like criticism so why tf would I wanna show her a comic that exists to criticize her work lol), and I'm not planning on posting it to Webtoons because that's Rachel's territory. I don't want to overstep both in the legal sense and in the moral one. I think it's more than enough for me to just post my stuff here for the people who are seeking it, and not profit off it or directly affiliate it with LO/Rachel beyond crediting.
All that said, in a moral and legal sense, what I'm doing is literally the basis of fanfiction, and I wouldn't be going to such lengths and spending this much time every week putting out episodes every week if I never cared about LO and how it made us all feel, even if some of us don't love it as much as we used to.

Hello! I got to see the D&D movie at long last (it was a bit of an adventure to get to a theater playing it, but that's a long story). I really enjoyed it, and now I can finally go through your review/easter egg posts in detail. Thanks for posting those! It's astounding how many references they have that seem to be published in, like, one magazine from 20 years ago. Plus how much detail is in the background/props!
[[ Hey hey!
Yeah the movie really is something! They included a bunch of stuff that they totally didn't need to, the kind of stuff that only the most dedicated loremasters of FR will seek out and check. Take, for instance, this document indicting Edgin and Holga:
Tumblr media
The FR Wiki editors translated it from Thorass to read:
By authority [sic] of the Lords Alliance Absolution Council recognises Edgin Darvis and Holga Kilgore Guilty of the following offenses 1 Grand larceny 2 Skullduggery
Count 1 - the absolution council aforesaid in the name and behalf of the Lords Alliance charge and accuse Edgin Darvis and Holga K ilgore with the offense of grand larceny with a sentence of 5 years imprisonment" Count 2 - the absolution council aforesaid in the name and behalf of the Lords Alliance charge and accuse Edgin Darvis and Holga K ilgore with the offense of sk ullduggery with a sen[tence of] 2 years impriso[onment]" Green block: "Approved" Bottom block: "Lord Alliance Council
Little details like these I I find so moving because it feels like they really cared about doing justice to the setting that I love so much. ]]

Fnaf movie design, what's your opinion? (I mean the character's desing like William, Henry, Mike, etc...)
Josh Hutcherson’s Mike does give a lot of “tired late 20something trying to get that paycheck” energy, so I’m happy there.
WAS UNAWAKE OF HENRY/HANK BEING IN THIS MOVIE SO THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME KNOW. AND HOLY SHIT, NEVER SEEN CHRISTIAN STOEKS BEFORE IN ANYTHING IVE SEEN BUT HE A HANDSOME HENRY
and i’m torn between “well he’s supposed to be a normal guy to lure children” and “dress him like the 70s purple manslut he should be” on Matthew Lilliard Willy Afton and my hope is that he goes HARD in his acting and kicks a puppy in his first scene

I'm REALLY curious who else read those parts and made it to the final rounds. We know the actor who played Jonah was a Louis finalist, but we don't know any other Lestats, right? It does sound from what Rolin has said like both Jacob and Sam were the frontrunners from their first auditions, and if that's true, he must have been so relieved when they had amazing chemistry with each other lol. It's just interesting b/c they clearly looked at a wide range of known and much lesser known actors.
Interesting too to think about who else read for Armand and Claudia (both times).
Oh! I don't think I even knew Thomas Antony Olajide was a finalist for Louis! That's so interesting and its awesome that they still managed to pull him in for a role - he was really good as Jonah! It's such a record scratch though to even consider him as Louis, because I honestly can't imagine anyone but Jacob in the role now, haha.
And yeah! Rolin says on the IWTV podcast that they got it down to about ten actors for both Louis and Lestat, but it does sound like Jacob and Sam were both frontrunners from the start. Mark even says in that same ep that he remembers Rolin saying Sam would be hard to beat after seeing his first audition and that no one ever did.
I'd love to know who was up for Armand and Claudia too. At least for s2 Claudia, I'm lowkey inclined to think the shortlist was entirely or predominantly British given the four auditions sound like they were on the same day, in-person in London and it was such a quick turn around for casting, but who knows with Bailey.
Armand I am soooo curious about, because I can't tell how broad they went for that role? Louis and Claudia were obviously very deliberately written as Black, but I don't know if Armand was (at least in s1) written as South Asian? They've definitely made that more central to his character in s2 as we've gotten to know him better in the context of the show, but with how he's written in s1, it'd be interesting to know if they were thinking as specifically about race for his character as they were for the others (and also who Assad [who's also literally perfect in the role] was up against).
