I finished reading Amari and the Night Brothers by B. B. Alston, the first in a middle-grade fantasy series that’s clearly walking in the spirit of Harry Potter. I respect a lot about it, and had fun reading it. It’s about Amari Peters, an ordinary girl, a poor Black kid from the wrong part of town who doesn’t feel like she fits in at her preppy scholarship high school, whose closest friend was her brother but he went missing months ago… and then she gets a letter from her brother nominating her for the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs teen trainee summer camp tryouts. And she gets introduced to a zany, quirky, whimsical magical world hidden in plain sight, and learns that she is the most special and powerful magician of all, and is feared and persecuted for it, but proves herself through her grit and loyalty and tenacity and goodness and saving the magical world.

I had some thoughts about the way it portrayed this magical world, and Amari’s struggles within it, here.

there are a lot of things that make it well constructed to become a Big Fandom and popular with kids and teens, and I’d like to see it become so! But, I can also see some stumbling blocks for why it might not get all the way there.
